Bosse
From AlexBrownRacing
Great grandson of Bold Ruler, with Somethingroyal (Sedretariat's dam) in 4th generation on the bottom. Bosse (reg. name Secret Poise) is a 1991 model Thoroughbred whom I bought when he was 7 and very "green". He only raced once, while he was on the track and he did not place. He was owned by a professor who came out to the barn, where Bosse was boarded, every weekend and tried to ride him. He would fall off almost every time, or his daughter would try and she got bucked off too. I started riding Bosse, to help his owner out, by making him more rideable. I soon realized that Bosse was ONE HAPPY HORSE, without a mean bone in his body! But he was never let out of his stall, other than when his owner came to see him... I loved Bosse's spirit and eventually bought him (very CHEAP) from his professor owner.
Bosse was the "Bucking King" of the barn and people would line up by the arena at night, to watch me ride him, betting on whether he would "get me off" or not :) He never did! But I channeled all that extra energy he had towards teaching him to jump, which he really liked. He also started going out to pasture EVERY DAY, as soon as he became my horse... We also went out into the fields and galloped a lot, and this horse is one of the most talented "buckers" I have ever known - he can still throw in a series of bucks going at a full speed gallop, upphill, without even getting his head down!!! :)
I showed Bosse in 4'3" jumper classes eventually and some eventing, he trains 3rd-4th level dressage and is the Master trailhorse, the one of choice when exploring new territory, as he is brave and can keep his cool even if we end up almost trapped in a cactus field or in steep terrain.
I never thought he would "settle down" enough to where I could have anybody but an experienced and confident rider ride him - but he proved me wrong! For the past 6 years or so, he has been a VERY trusting "school master" and many of my students have enjoyed learning from him, both in jumping and dressage, and some have even been brave enough to take him out for a gallop! He adjusts to his rider; if he has a beginner on his back he is very gentle and takes good care of his rider, with someone a bit more advanced, he still helps out a lot, is forgiving, but also expects his rider to work a little harder, and then when "mom" gets up there, he behaves like his old self again, bucking and farting and just being happy that he doesn't have to "take care" of me... BOSSE IS SO MUCH FUN TO RIDE!!! He is now my husband's horse and Bosse loves Richard like crazy, and it is mutual :)

What a wonderful horse - and a great page! Thanks for sharing Bosse's story! GreyDot
OMG! Bosse and Toby sound like very similar personalities! I started to crack up about the bucking and farting when you're on. I'll have to test Toby out with other riders. For a time you could tell he was very distressed by his previous rider/owner but maybe now he'll be happier because he knows he's really with me. I always say Toby has a wicked sense of humor. And God help you if you don't let him run up his favorite sand dune... WendyinMI
