updates are now here.
Update 3400: Big Brown, the 3-1 Derby Favorite, will have to do it from the outside post: Big Brown draws far outside for Derby, excerpt:
Big Brown will start from post 20 and Colonel John will start from post 10 when the 134th Kentucky Derby is run Saturday at Churchill Downs. Track linemaker Mike Battaglia pegged Big Brown as the 3-1 favorite, followed by Colonel John at 4-1 and Pyro (post 9) the third choice at 6-1.
Update 3399: A close look at what the Derby contenders did today at Churchill Downs: Daily Derby Notes: April 30.
Update 3398: The order in which post positions will be drawn tonight has been determined: Poor Gayego, excerpt:
The entire order: 1. Visionaire, 2. Big Truck, 3. Colonel John, 4. Z Fortune, 5. Pyro, 6. Eight Belles, 7. Anak Nakal, 8. Court Vision, 9. Z Humor, 10. Monba, 11. Smooth Air, 12. Adriano, 13. Bob Black Jack, 14. Denis of Cork, 15. Cowboy Cal, 16. Big Brown, 17. Tale of Ekati, 18. Cool Coal Man, 19. Recapturetheglory, 20. Gayego
Update 3397: The Kentucky Derby draw is later this afternoon, and can be viewed on ESPN2 from 5pm to 6pm: Morning Line: 'An Empty Feeling' for Bob Baffert.
Update 3396: I am going to have to root for Big Truck: Big Truck to Benefit ReRun on Derby Day, excerpt:
Felice Busto, vice president of ReRun said, "We're thrilled to have the 'big' horse to publicize the 'Running for ReRun' program and encourage other owners to participate so we can place more ex-racehorses in good homes. While many owners like Mr. Fein care about what happens to their horses after racing, the reality is that for others, the horses are disposable after their last race.
"We only rely on support from owners, breeders, fans, and the racing industry to be able to give more ex-racehorses a second chance when their racing careers have ended," Busto added.
ReRun.
Update 3395: A chilly start to the morning this morning at Woodbine, but a bright sunny day so things did warm up. I had seven sets. There are now three of us riding for Steve in the morning's. Myself, Jodie who has been with us for a few weeks, and now Mark who is from India and spent some time in Dubai and has been at Woodbine before. Anyway, a good group with which to work. My horses went nicely. My last set went to the gate to stand. He stood well and was a little wild as I set off from the gate to start his mile gallop. Once we got into our gallop all was well. Another pleasant morning's work.
Update 3394: Steve Haskin takes a look at the new Derby arrival, Big Brown, and reviews some of the recent works of the contenders: Haskin's Derby Report: Early Thoughts.
Please keep calling and writing.

Barbaro Update: 572
Posted April 29, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3393: Today's Kentucky Derby Minute (which is 2:27 minutes long): Tuesday's Derby Minute.
Update 3392: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly Derby trail update:
Until tomorrow afternoon's post position draw, the only Derby trail action is analyzing (and overanalyzing) the contenders' works and every possible bit of data available, no matter how tangential.
To that end, I always look forward to playing with the C-J Derby Data Track (and was pleased to discover its origins in a post at TheRail); one of the options might prove particularly salient when comparing this year's hype horses to last year's results -- proven ability to handle traffic. Street Sense and Hard Spun had a 'yes' in that column; Curlin a no. Beyond the overall 'experience' tag, this is a factor I like paying attention to. Horses with the dreaded 'no' this year include quite a few I do like - including Z Fortune, Eight Belles, Denis of Cork, Smooth Air, Gayego and, of course, Big Brown. If I were judging by that factor alone, it would make Visionaire, Tale of Ekati, Pyro and Colonel John look particularly attractive.
But adding in another factor complicates matters; if I go by highest Beyers, Bob Black Jack heads straight for the top of the list (which, if anything, looks very 'sprinty'), followed by Big Brown, Gayego, Recapturetheglory, Z Fortune and Eight Belles - no one else has cracked the 100 mark; Colonel John's highest is a 95.
Two BRIS speed ratings of 100 or higher yields a more select group -- only Big Brown, Tale of Ekati, Pyro and Cool Coal Man.
Whenever I mix and match the factors I'm most interested in, three horses keep coming back to the top: Tale of Ekati, Pyro and Visionaire.
So, with all that, who do I like (at least in the pre-post-position-draw world)? It's looking something like this:
- Big Brown - The Big Brown show beings in earnest today
- Colonel John - Seems to like Churchill Downs
- Denis of Cork - Don't like his prep, but it was a nice work
- Eight Belles - Looked pretty good the other day - and drew an outside post for the Oaks
- Gayego - Not convinced he is a 1 1/4 horse, but he's talented
- Pyro - I'm still not convinced, but he keeps popping up
- Smooth Air - Health concerns remain?
- Tale of Ekati - If Barclay Tagg is happy, I'm happy
- Visionaire - Worked in his usual style
- Z Fortune - Still love his sire, Siphon
I'm still grumbling about Tomcito's absence (especially after a nice work yesterday - I'd happily toss Anak Nakal, Z Humor and Cowboy Cal to let him run) and that of an also-eligible list, but at least I have the Belmont to look forward to.
It's worth checking out the short article on Big Brown's former trainer, Pat Reynolds, as well - he's another one who got Curlined (and he suggests that he sold for considerably more than the reported $3 million). He mentions Big Brown's odd patch of white on his left side (check out Barbara Livingston's photo of it here -- and a rather dramatic shot of him acting up in the Saratoga paddock before his first race); anyone who read King of the Wind as a child can probably read far too much into the white spot.
Update 3391: My post today on The New York Times The Rail:
Barbaro's Fifth Birthday
A quiet morning for me this morning at Woodbine. We had a lot of walkers and a few workers. Only a handful of horses galloped, I rode two. I helped out on the ground making sure the workers were ready when necessary and went out to watch a few of the horses working. A pleasant morning to be around the horses although it was a little chilly!
Update 3390: Big Brown has now arrived for the Derby: Brown In Town.
Today would have been Barbaro's fifth Birthday. A day to celebrate his life and do something for horses everywhere: 4/29 CALL TO ACTION ALERT!!!

Update 3389: A detailed look at each of the Derby runners as they continue to prepare for their biggest race: Daily Derby Notes: April 28.
Update 3388: A nice article on Lentenor: Destined to romp: For Lentenor, homestretch is down the road.
Update 3387: Wet, Wet, Wet. That's what it was like this morning, and cold and windy! Thankfully we have the Polytrack, and while there was water lying on top, it rode very well. At one stage a breezer came passed me as I was galloping, and I did not hear it coming. I had six sets, two went to the gate and all went nicely. We had a couple of freelancers help us out and I helped walk a couple of horses between my sets (while I put my outer clothes in the dryer). Anyway, all in all not too bad a morning's work despite the grotty weather.
I did receive a text from Louisville. Andy Durnin, a friend who is there galloping Tres Boraches who is now preparing for the Preakness, alerted me to this article: SLAUGHTER vs. RESCUE, excerpt:
"Let me tell you something, if they're not careful, you'll see another Ferdinand," said two-time Derby winning trainer Nick Zito, the original conditioner of Little Cliff.
Update 3386: Steve Haskin reports on the goings on as we close in on Derby week: Kentucky Derby Trail: California Comets.

Peppers Pride Ties the Record
Saturday Workouts
Tune-Up for Recapturetheglory and Anak Nakal
Update 3383: Another lovely morning this morning at Woodbine. When the sun came up it got warm in a hurry. We had plenty of horses to train today and used a couple of freelance exercise riders to help us out. Mark from Mumbai and Warren from South Africa. We were quite the international crew this morning! I galloped six horses, four before the break and two after the break, so it ended up being quite a nice and relaxing morning. All my horses went well. A couple galloped two miles and took quite a hold the second mile so I was glad of the lighter schedule! Anyway, all in all a pleasant morning where we got finished early. On my way out of the track I stopped by the HBPA office. Just to chat and catch up quickly on some light racing reading! We do not have any runners here this afternoon so I can relax for the rest of the day.
Lava Man makes his long awaited return to the races this afternoon: Lava Man's Comeback Tops Gold Rush Card.
Update 3382: Media coverage of some of Saturday's Stakes:

We were second in each of the above races with Zanjero, Kodiak Kowboy and J Be K.
Update 3381: Peppers Pride joins an elite group: Peppers Pride Equals Mark With Number 16.
Update 3380: Taking Nicanor's picture: Watching Nicanor: Thoughts from Photographer Louise Reinagel.
Update 3379: A tale of two horses from the track:
Little Cliff
Buckingham Place
Update 3378: A busy morning this morning at Woodbine, something I was not entirely expecting. I had nine sets, five before the break and four after the break. It was another gorgeous morning and just a great day to be galloping horses. All my horses went nicely. During the break I helped hand walk a couple, we were light a couple of hotwalkers, and we needed to get our afternoon runners bathed and walked. I'll be going back early this afternoon to help out with our three runners.
Update 3377: A week away from the Derby, so while we do have the Derby Trial today at Churchill Downs, there are no Derby preps. There are many stakes races around the country today and we have runners in quite a few of them. A short list of a few of the stakes where we are represented includes: The Derby Trial with Kodiak Cowboy (Solid Trial run to get meet going), The Withers at Aqueduct with J Be K (J Be K Faces Short Field in Withers), The Jacques Cartier here at Woodbine with Santana Strings and The Texas Mile at Lone Star with Zanjero (Monterey Jazz One to Catch in Texas Mile).
Perhaps though, the most important race of the day will be held in New Mexico, where Peppers Pride attempts to equal the modern day record of sixteen consecutive wins: Peppers Pride seeks 16th consecutive win.

updates are now here.
Update 3376: Barbaro's youngest brother, the yearling Lentenor, playing in the paddock with his contemporaries: Barbaro's baby brother grows up.
Update 3375: I am not going to get too excited just yet ... but I think the internet access issue is resolved! Another busy morning this morning at Woodbine. We had nine sets, five before the break and four after the break. The four after the break all went to the gate to stand. A couple of my horses were a little fractious this morning, one looked like he was sparring and getting ready for a boxing match, on his way home. I heard someone shout "He's going to come off ..." I nearly turned around to see if I could make a wager ... anyway, fortunately I stayed on board and all was well. All galloped nicely and while I am now pretty exhausted I know we will have a nice and quiet day tomorrow.
Update 3374: Great coverage from Fox News in Tampa regarding all Fans of Barbaro: FOBs On TV for Barbaro
And here are a two of my posts on The New York Times racing blog - The Rail:
Mornings On The Backside
Carrying Out Barbaros Legacy
Update 3373: Still very limited internet access, so more updates after work this friday morning!
Please keep calling and writing. You can also help celebtrate Barbaro's life on April 29: 4/29 CALL TO ACTION ALERT.
Update 3372: Two horses worked out for the Derby today. Cool Coal Man worked in company at Churchill Downs. His Derby Jockey, Julian Leparoux was on his work companion to get a good look at his Derby mount: Leparoux Gets New View of Cool Coal Man.
Likely Derby favorite Big Brown had a stiff 5/8ths work, a work he likely needed to get him set up for the challenge he faces in only his fifth race next week: Big Brown Sizzles in Five Furlong Work.
Still have internet trouble, I am in a public library in Humberwood!
Update 3371: Busy morning this morning at Woodbine. We had 10 sets. Five of which went before the break and 5 after the break. The routine in the barn has now got organized well enough in order for us to get these 10 sets out before the track closed at 10am. All my horses went nicely. It was a little chilly earlier this morning which certainly perked up a couple of them and made it important to hold on to the neckstrap. Three of my horses went to the gate to stand and all three stood well. All in all a busy morning but everything came together well.
Update 3370: Very limited internet access this morning. Updates will follow after work.
Please keep calling and writing. You can also help celebtrate Barbaro's life on April 29: 4/29 CALL TO ACTION ALERT.
Update 3369: Edgar Prado was involved in a spill today at Keeneland aboard the Graham Motion trained May Meeting. Both horse and jockey appear to be fine: Prado Hospitalized, Released After Spill.
Update 3368: Tale of Ekati worked this morning and was the only Derby contender to work. He went 5/8ths in a minute and change at Keeneland: Tale of Ekati Breezes in 1:00 1/5. Other Derby contenders did a mix of walking, jogging, galloping and paddock schooling: Daily Derby Notes: April 23.
Update 3367: A very pleasant morning again at Woodbine, It appeared a little overcast early but the clouds soon cleared out. We had eight sets, four before the break and four after the break. Everyone seemed to go nicely. A couple of sets went to the gate to stand. No problems.
My new boss (Steve Flint is now our assistant trainer, Darren returned to Texas) told me a fun little story. When he was thirteen, he was hussling hots on the backside at Churchill. After the Derby he noticed the guy walking the winner, Eddie Sweat, was thirsty. He went and got him a coke and handed it to him. Eddie thanked him and handed him a halter as a keepsake. The halter was the same halter used to lead his winner over for the race. A possession Steve will treasure forever. Do I have to ask whose halter it is ?
Update 3366: Santa Anita's meet is now over and it is now reviewing its plan for its synthetic track for the upcoming Breeders' Cup. It seems clear that horsemen have been satisfied with the performance of the surface after it was reworked by Ian Pearse of Pro-Ride Australia: Santa Anita Post-Meet Surface Report.
My most recent post at The Rail (New York Times blog) is regarding the use of Synthetic Surfaces as training surfaces for those competing in the Triple Crown: The Dirt on Choosing a Training Surface.

Update 3365: Steve Haskin looks at how the qualifications for the Derby has impacted the quality of the contemporary fields. Steve also looks at the plusses and minuses of ten of this year's contenders: Ky Derby Trail: Questions and Quandaries.
Update 3364: This afternoon I went to Ontario Livestock Exchange with Jana, here is her report: OLEX- Auction Report- Ontario Canada. Unlike New Holland, most of these horses are sold by the pound. There were two thoroughbreds, that we observed. A young Ecton Park filly sold for 63 cents / pound, the dealer who bought her did not buy her for kill. An older, half blind, thoroughbred did go to kill. Approximately half the horses that went through were in the kill pens waiting as we were leaving.
Update 3363: Superfecta here, with your regular Tuesday Derby Trail update.
The New York Times seems to have caught Derby Fever in a big way. Not only did they have a feature article on Big Brown (more on that below), they've launched The Rail -- a blog headed by Joe Drape with a variety of interesting contributors (including your host here and some nice TBA links on their blogroll - thanks, guys!). I particularly enjoyed today's Jim Squires entry.
Last weekend's results were disappointing to me (and I'm fairly agnostic on the Polytrack angle in this instance), since I'd much prefer to see Tomcito in the Derby over a large group of horses whose abilities at a mile and a quarter are questionable at best (and some of those who are bred for the distance scream 'turf'); I did enjoy the quick segment with Eight Belles (perspective notwithstanding, she's clearly a big girl) and Proud Spell as potential Derby entries. The word at this point seems to be that both will definitely be entered, although neither seems a lock to go to the gate Derby day:
"We're going to enter both fillies in the Oaks," Jones said by phone from Delaware Park, where he was running horses Monday. "I've been told to enter Eight Belles in the Derby. If Eight Belles draws a good post in the Derby, and a crappy post in the Oaks, she'll probably run in the Derby. If she draws a crappy post in the Derby, and a good post in the Oaks, she'll probably run in the Oaks. I'd say it's a 50-50 chance. I do know Mr. Porter wants to run in the Derby if she draws a good post.
"Proud Spell, if she draws a really crappy post in the Oaks, we might cross-enter her in the Derby. But I'd say that's only 15-85."
I'd like to see Eight Belles in the Derby, although the obvious knock on her is that she has not faced colts before. At least the defection of War Pass makes a spot available for someone else, and further dropouts could make more space for Denis of Cork, who continues to train toward the Derby despite his current ranking on the graded earnings list; in my ideal world, a few more would exit the picture to ensure that he, Big Truck and Tomcito all get in the gate (which makes the Eight Belles dilemma all the more problematic).
Pyro and Z Fortune had slightly mysterious works in thick fog on Monday; naturally, that did not serve to answer any questions about Pyro's readiness after the Blue Grass debacle. Adriano has been hard at work as well, but I still can't get on his bandwagon, despite being a big fan of Graham Motion. Tomcito worked a bullet on Polytrack only to handle it poorly in a race, so I'm not convinced a decent work over the Churchill Downs track can be given as much weight at a race over real dirt -- and we know that didn't work out well last time.
Speaking of synthetics, Colonel John continues to train at Santa Anita; I'm curious to see how he takes to the Churchill Downs surface next weekend.
Of course, I've only briefly touched on Big Brown; while his feet and lack of experience have been rehashed a number of times, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Times article about him and his connections is the structure of majority owner IEAH -- they plan to go public shortly:
Since its inception in 2003, I.E.A.H. has raised more than $40 million from more than 80 investors and has formed partnerships to own various horses. The hedge fund model will supplant this arrangement; partners will own a part of all I.E.A.H. assets, from its 80 horses in training to its 15 broodmares and its future stallions, including the 2007 Breeders' Cup Mile champion, Kip Deville; Benny the Bull, winner of the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen; and Big Brown.
Each financial quarter, an independent auditor will assess the fund's value, and investors will be able to decide to buy into the fund or sell their positions. "What we're offering are liquidity and options that people in the horse business have never had before," [IEAH president Michael] Iavarone said.
Considering that the IEAH team has already won over
$3 million dollars this year (25% winners, 56% in the money), they must be doing something right. I look forward to seeing what sort of investment levels they set over the next year.
Check back later for an updated Superfecta Derby Top Ten...
Update 3362: A short morning's work for me this morning, with only four sets. We had plenty of workers and a few jockeys in to help us out. Aside from galloping my four horses, which all went nicely, I went over to the track to watch a few working. Just a pleasant morning to be around the barn. Jimmy McAleney, who has ridden most of our starters so far, was one of the jockeys breezing for us. We chatted afterwards about horse retirement issues. Someone had told him about this site and he seemed pretty interested in it. I also chatted with Chantal Sutherland, who is a friend of my fellow exercise rider, Jodie. Chantal has recently returned from riding (successfully) in California and I asked her about the track surface at Santa Anita. She could not say enough good things about it since it was fixed by the pro ride people. She was hopeful that the decision would be to keep the current surface. This is an important and ongoing debate: Support grows for synthetic surface.
Update 3361: The most anticipated pre-Derby work this week was Pyro's work, coming off his lackluster effort in the Bluegrass. He worked 3/4s on Monday in company and due to thick fog the workout was not timed: Pyro Works Six Furlongs in...Who Knows?, excerpt:
"I was on horseback and it was so foggy that I only saw the last 50 feet of the work," trainer Steve Asmussen said of the 6:30 a.m. move. "But from what I saw, it looked fine."
I am participating in The Rail, a Triple Crown blog from the New York Times.

Posted April 21, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3360: Curlin had a light work this morning, through the fog at Keeneland: Curlin Back to Work after Dubai Trip, excerpt:
"We just sped him up a little bit," Asmussen said. "There's no telling how fast he went because of how foggy it was out there, but it was a very easy breeze."
and
"I love how Curlin is doing; I'm very pleased with him," Asmussen said. "I'm just extremely excited with how he's doing and how he's acting. I think he's going to bounce out of his Dubai trip in excellent shape."
and
"Everybody is pleased with how he is doing and everything he's done," said Asmussen. "I don't think there is any reason to get in any hurry about what's next."
Update 3359: Edgar Prado is among six nominated to the Racing Hall of Fame for 2008. Other nominees are Carl Nafzger, trainer of Kentucky Derby winners Street Sense and Unbridled, jockey Milo Valenzuela, horses Inside Information, Manila and Ancient Title: Nafzger, Prado headline Racing Hall of Fame class of 2008.
Update 3358: A Monday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:
Just a little bit cloudy for a Monday. At least it is nice and cool for the horses. Saturday had some great works at the track. Who's Happy breezed well and was a bit confused to start from a different pole than usual. This made her quite managable. Gator Nation also had a good work and will be running at Atlantic City on Wednesday night. Tim told me that Rajasthan had a great work. Unfortunately, he did not get in to run this week. He is doing great and we can't wait to run him. Saar Treaty had her first three eighths mile work and she handled it like a professional. She is all business. Maybe she will get to run in a two year old race at the end of May. Tail Tails is fine after beating one horse at Delaware Park yesterday. She did everything well and broke just fine, just got out run. She hardly blew after the race and ate all of her dinner last night. We will have to try something else with her. Anyway, I think that is all of the news for now.
Update 3357: We are experiencing a gorgeous weather system at Woodbine lwhich makes being at work early in the morning a pleasure. Seven sets, four before the break and three after the break. I had a couple of horses go to the gate for a little schooling, they behaved very well. Everyone also galloped nicely. One of my regular horses breezed with a jockey, I went up to watch. He also went nicely.
I have got a couple of new sets of reigns, with much longer rubber parts which help me as I typically take a long hold on my horses. Much easier to gallop now.
There was one loose horse flying around the race track early, and seemed to manage to avoid the outriders' best efforts for a while. It came flying by me at one point but fortunately my horse stayed quite calm and I think the horse was caught and all was well. Anyway, a little excitement for the morning!
Update 3356: Larry Jones' pair of fillies, who are still being considered for the Kentucky Derby, both worked yesterday their penultimate work for either the Derby or the Oaks. They both worked a half mile. Eight Belles went a a little quick in 46.6 and Proud Spell went in 50.2: Eight Belles, Proud Spell Both Work.
Please keep calling and writing.

Barbaro Updates: 566
Posted April 19, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3355: A very pleasant day at the races at Woodbine this afternoon. I went over a little after noon and met with a few FOBs on the patio of the Champions suite, third floor. An excellent vantage point for the races and a great place to just hang out for the afternoon. After my swift lunch I left everyone to help out with our two two year olds running in the third race. This was both of their first starts and both behaved flawlessly (lots of paddock schooling and gate schooling in hand) and ran nicely over the quarter mile race. Fanci Candi was second and Cuvee Star finished in the middle. A good experience for both. Later in the afternoon we had Into Reality running in the Stakes race. She was the fifth pick and there was a heavy favorite (Bear Now begins year in Whimsical). Into Reality ran a very nice race, checking in at fourth but only beaten two lengths for everything. She really tried hard and it was a great race to watch! All in all a very pleasant afternoon!
Under two weeks to the Derby, we will see plenty of the contenders breezing their penultimate breeze in the next couple of days. This will typically be a pretty strong 5/8ths type breeze to set them up for an easy breeze about five days before the Derby. Today both Colonel John (Colonel John tunes up for Derby) and Adriano (Adriano Puts in Five-Furlong Drill) were among those breezing.
Update 3354: Another gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine. We had eight sets, four before the break and four after the break. Our barn routine is starting to come together to get the horses ready and out in an orderly fashion. Setting up a new barn and getting things going, you anticipate some "teething" issues, but all seems to be coming together. All the horses I rode went nicely, just a lovely atmosphere for the horses who are nice and relaxed galloping around. I am also starting to get to know a few others around here and everyone is being very pleasant and helpful. We have three runners this afternoon, so I will go over to help out a little and also hang out with a couple of FOBs who are planning to attend the races.
Update 3353: The Todd Pletcher trained Behindatthebar won yesterstay's Lexington Stakes and is unlikely to run in the Derby. Tomcito and Salute the Sarge were disappointing: Behindatthebar surges to clear Lexington Stakes win.
Smooth Air, who was second to Big Brown in the Florida Derby, had his final work in Florida yesterday before shipping to Kentucky today. He worked 7/8ths in 1.25.8: Smooth Air Works at Calder.
Update 3352: Horse racing is a great equalizer. Two wins from two starts yesterday at Woodbine and you start to think the game is easy. Today we were blanked with our four runners, although 1-2 favorite Carson's Legacy did run well to finish second in the Stakes race. I paddock schooled our Stakes runner for tomorrow Into Reality during the third race. I then went back over for the stakes race and ultimately helped cool out Carson's Legacy after he ran. We went to the detention barn, as is usual for winners and one or two additional runners. Anyway, he cooled out well and was bouncing after his race. All in all a pleasant afternoon, despite not visiting the winner's circle!
Update 3351: Two year old Champion War Pass, who has been unable to reproduce that form as a three year old, has suffered an injury and is out of the Derby: War Pass Injured; Out of Kentucky Derby.
Update 3350: Another lovely and warm morning this morning at Woodbine. The sunrise, coming up just across from the 5/16ths pole, was just spectacular! We had eight sets, four before the break and four after the break. The barn is now starting to get a little more organized which allows us to get the horses out in a more orderly fashion. The eight I rode went nicely with no real surprises. A couple of the more recent ones that shipped in had their first outing today and were horses I knew from Houston, so that was nice. We were also fed a nice breakfast thanks to our winners yesterday so all in all a pleasant morning's work.
Update 3349: A busy weekend for us racing this weekend at Woodbine. The two wins yesterday got us off to a good start, today we have four runners at Woodbine including two runners in the feature Stakes race: Carson's Legacy looking quickest. Lets hope our luck continues. Elsewhere, the main contest is the Lexington at Keeneland, televised on ESPN 2 from 5 pm: Tomcito seeks Lexington Stakes win, spot in Derby.

Barbaro Updates: 565
Posted April 18, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3348: We had two runners this afternoon at Woodbine and two winners. The first winner, Double Colico, was claimed and was perhaps a decent claim for the new connections. The second winner, Sir Winston, won just as easily and came back to our barn. In between the two races we paddock schooled a few of this weekend's runners. I went over with a couple of 2yo first time starters. This was their first time paddock schooling and they behaved very well. Steve will paddock school pretty much everything (I think) the day before they run. I remember seeing Curlin paddock school the day before the Preakness last year. It is a game of inches, so the better you prepare, the better chance you have.
A Friday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:
Today was a gorgeous Friday. The horses seem to be enjoying the warm weather. The first baths of the season are a bit troublesome but now that the horses are shedding out their winter coats both the grooms and the horses are enjoying a bit of water. Rajasthan did not get into the races for this weekend at Aqueduct. Hopefully next week we will try again with more success. Tail Tails will be running on Sunday at Delaware Park. She is such a lovey girl, I really hope she does well on Sunday. Our Diva is really looking the part of a racehorse. She has grown so much and is now a tall, fit looking filly. She shouldn't be long from the races now. Who's Happy continues to try to intimidate Saar Treaty who is in the neighboring stall. Saar takes it all in stride and doesn't seem to mind the mean looks she gets from Happy. King Congaree and Sweet Ginger Brown are now training together. They are both babies and have a tendancy to spook each other. Boys can be so goofy unlike the little Smoke Glacken filly we have who is more than sensible. All of the babies are doing just fine and do normal baby things. They will soon learn and will be more confident as time goes on. Luke's time at the farm is soon to be over. He is needed to school the babies a little bit. Vieled Reference is doing just fine at the farm and is now into the new routine. She always has a buddy in with her and she loves to play around in her stall. She normally has a few moments of playfullness every morning and then she settles right down again. She is a joy. Anyway, should be some breezers to write about tomorrow.
Update 3347: Likely Derby favorite Big Brown worked this morning at Palm Meadows going 5/8ths in 1:00 3/5: Big Brown Works for Kentucky Derby, excerpt:
"He breezed just like he always breezes five-eighths; well within himself, comfortable, no pressure," trainer Rick Dutrow said. "We're as happy as we can be with him right now. We don't need to ask him for any more than that. We don't even ask him for that. He just gallops around there at his own pace; it's beautiful. He and Michelle seem to have a little thing going when they get to their breeze. Every time she’s breezed this horse it's gone great."
The First Saturday in May opens today, if it airs in your area it really is a "must see". I have seen it twice, but I would love to see it on a big screen in a movie theater. They also need our support: Documentary follows Barbaro's road to Derby: Film is about six race hopefuls, including horse that become tragic legend.
Off to the races at Woodbine.
Update 3346: A gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine. Its going to be hot this afternoon for the races! I had seven sets today, four before the break and three after the break. It was a pretty hectic morning, but fun morning nonetheless. Each one I galloped went nicely, and the two I took to the gate also did well. We will have a busy weekend of runners here, and this begins with two runners this afternoon, which I may go over and watch and help out.
Update 3345: Jay Privman takes a look at the prevailing attitude towards running a horse in the Kentucky Derby and also previews the Lexington, which is run tomorrow, which may yet yield one or two Derby runners: Worthy or not, it's hard to say no to Derby.
ESPN 2 will broadcast the Lexington, beginning 5 pm Eastern on Saturday.
Jane Heart has produced some lovely jewelry to honor Barbaro, with a portion of the proceeds going to Laminitis Research: Barbaro Jewelry.

updates are now here.
Update 3344: Nice to see support from Keeneland (and Toyota) for the Kentucky Equine Humane Center: Keeneland and Toyota Give Grant to KyEHC.
Update 3343: Steve Haskin is excited over Court Vision's fast work at Churchill with blinkers added, and also takes a look at the upcoming Lexington and its possible impact on the Derby: Ky. Derby Trail: A Vision at the Downs.
Update 3342: Here I am, this morning, on Deputy Dance with my jacket covering my Brett Favre shirt: Photo: Care to 'Dance'?.
Update 3341: It must be spring time here in Canada, it was a glorious morning! I had six sets, and another relatively uneventful morning galloping. The track photographer was in the barn to take a few pictures with me and one of our runners this weekend (Deputy Dance) and he objected to me wearing my Brett Favre shirt. A little odd, but to appease him I put my jacket on over the top. Anyway, everyone thought it was pretty funny and my boss told the photographer that if I got run off with he would be to blame! A little banter for the morning. Another dark day this afternoon at the track, racing resumes tomorrow and we will have two runners.
Update 3340: This week I have had the opportunity to visit two unique retirement programs, one affiliated with a racetrack: LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society and one affiliated with a breeder Adena Springs Retirement Program. The Louisville Thoroughbred Club has now formed its own retirement foundation, My Racing Heart, and FOB Kate Richards will serve as president of the foundation: Foundation to support Thoroughbred retirement. For those in Kentucky for the Derby, they are planning a benefit on Saturday April 26.
The First Saturday in May opens nationwide tomorrow, here are the locations and ticket sales.

Barbaro Updates: 563
Posted April 16, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3339: Ramon Dominguez, who rode Bluegrass Cat to second place behind Barbaro in the 2006 Derby for Todd Pletcher, will be reunited with Todd Pletcher for this year's Derby: Dominguez Lands Mount on Monba.
Update 3338: Edgar Prado had a few choices for his Derby mount and has chosen the Graham Motion trained Adriano: Prado to Ride Adriano in Kentucky Derby.
I spent a couple of very interesting hours at Adena Springs Canada, with a focus on learning more about their thoroughbred retirement program. In three years they have placed about 75 of their retired horses and take in about six at a time. The facilities, which are part of the larger Adena Springs facility, are excellent with a huge indoor ring and access to a wooded area for their retraining. Stacie, who runs the program, is passionate about the issue of owner responsibility and horse retirement and it seems that this model is interesting and sadly unique. Adena Springs breeds a lot of horses, it is nice to see them take on some of this responsibility. We (I was with FOB Shelley Grainger and friend) met one of the retired horses who was very cool, as well as some of the horses they have in training there as we toured the other facilities. All in all a fun and interesting couple of hours.
Update 3337: A glorious morning at Woodbine and I was a little busier too with seven to go. All went nicely and it was just a relaxing morning's work. I galloped Carsons Legacy in front of the Wodbine TV crew, so at some point footage may appear of us somewhere. He is scheduled to run in a Stake this weekend. I also got to "open gallop" one of our horses, the same one with the rearing tricks yesterday. He went nicely and did not perform any of his acrobatics! I am now off to Adena Springs Retirement Program.
Update 3336: Another racing star (Stakes placed winner of more than $200,000) is pulled from the slaughter pipeline, despite the best efforts and intentions of his initial connections. FOBs helped with this save: Little Cliff rescued from slaughter, excerpt:
"The Cliff's Edge and Little Cliff were both named after [Guilliams]," Kim Zito said. "Nick had dinner with [Guilliams] just recently and told him what had happened to Little Cliff. [Guilliams] got very emotional and very upset."

Barbaro Updates: 562
Posted April 15, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3335: Showing Up, owned by the Jackson's and without a doubt one of the most talented turf runners in the last couple of years, has been retired: Dual Grade I Winner Showing Up Retired, excerpt:
"He's perfectly sound," Tagg said. "He had a couple of little problems with his hind suspensory, but he's 100% now. I have to admit I became very attached to him. Whatever you asked of him he did, and did it exceptionally well, on both grass and dirt. He was a very, very fast horse, but he could lay off the pace and give you that big run at the end. When he made his move he was like Adrian Peterson going through a hole. I truly think he’s one of the best horses I've ever trained."
Update 3334: A Tuesday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:
What a beautiful Tuesday morning. The day started out a bit crisp but now it is sunny and wonderful outside. Who's Happy is just fine after her five eighths work on Saturday. Tim managed to breeze her fairly easily and it was just a maintanance piece of work. Powdered Donut also worked and went in company with another horse for a good half mile work. Lucky has been back for a few weeks now and he gallops with a new friend. We have a Smoke Glaken two year old named Sweet Ginger Brown. He is a lovely boy and he and Lucky are a good match. Our Diva continues to improve and will break for a gate card this week. Every racehorse needs to be OK'd so to speak and given a gate card to keep with their jockey club papers. Diva should get this easily as she is all business on the track. Tail Tails is doing fine and Tim is trying to find another race for her. She still demands loads of attention and we are all happy to give it to her. King Congaree (tall, lanky, grey) is a hit with the ladies. He is such a big softy and it isn't hard to give him lots of attention. What a joy to be around. I'm not sure how he is to ride but I'll ask the trainer. I am also glad to report that the poison ivy has settled down a bit after a week of steroids. Hopefully we have learned to stay away!!!
Update 3333: A very pleasant meeting with Vicki and Sheri from LongRun. I went to their office, above the track kitchen, to meet with them, and then we hung out in the track kitchen for almost two hours. Vicki began LongRun in 2000 and it now has the support from Woodbine in terms of .25% of purse money, office space, and broad support from those on the backside. At one point a trainer came up to us to ask about how one of his (x) horses was doing. LongRun can foster (they do not have a barn themselves like the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program) forty horses in their program, and it appears the critical issue they face is finding appropriate foster homes and then subsequent adoptees. All in all it appears a very cool program, and I think it is great the direct support they get from Woodbine!
Update 3332: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly Derby Trail update.
With most of the major preps out of the way, there's just time for the Coolmore Lexington and gossip. Tomcito is the horse I'm watching (and I hope he finds Polytrack as much to his liking as the deep Peruvian tracks); I liked his third-place finish in the Florida Derby (especially after a long layoff) and think that the prep could actually work to his advantage. Dogwood Stables has both Blackberry Road and Atoned in the mix; they may use the race as a Preakness prep, which is also the likely plan for Salute the Sarge.
The main gossip of the week surrounds the likelihood of Eight Belles going in the Derby rather than the Oaks (and she will probably be entered in both). After coming close with Hard Spun (and getting sidetracked with Rockport Harbor), I can certainly sympathize with owner Rick Porter's desire to take another shot this year, and based on her numbers and form, she's a legitimate contender -- indeed, she's in my Top Ten this week. What I do not want to see is for her to be scratched from the Derby after a bad post position draw, thus shutting out someone else (especially a horse like Tomcito or Big Truck) who should really get a chance. Of course, if I had my way, the graded earnings=Derby gate equation would be shaken up considerably, but that's another story.
So, without further ado, the Superfecta Derby Top Ten for this week:
- Big Brown - The feet and the experience factors cannot be ignored, but neither can his potential -- unless he gets caught up in a speed duel
- Colonel John - If he were by anyone other than Tiznow, I would be wary of his lack of experience on conventional dirt
- Eight Belles - She's got the distance pedigree and much better numbers than most of her potential competitors
- Monba - Let's see what else he's got
- Pyro - He'll need to work between his non-effort in the Blue Grass and the Derby to be in peak form, but he's (otherwise) always been consistent
- Recapturetheglory - As a big Risen Star fan, I'd like to see his connections back, but he (like War Pass) shares Cherokee Run's sprinting genes
- Smooth Air - Has been a little overlooked since his Florida Derby effort
- Tale of Ekati - He has the pedigree and running style to suit the Derby - and seems to finally be maturing into himself
- Tomcito - Here's hoping he gets the cash he needs in the Coolmore Lexington - he's shaping up to be my favorite closer
- Visionaire - Overcame a tough trip over the weekend -- good practice for the Derby
Update 3331: Another relatively easy morning this morning at Woodbine. I only had five to ride, four went before the break and one a little later a couple of sets after the break. I would like to say they all went nicely, and they did when galloping. One of them, coming home, decided he had not done enough (he had galloped two miles) and started rearing ... and did it fourteen times (Darren, our assistant, counted). Fortunately he kept straight and did not come too close to going over backwards, so the neckstrap was able to save me. It was a little too much excitment, but thankfully all was well. Anyway, despite that, a pleasant and short morning's work. I am going to return to the track a little later to meet some folks from LongRun, a thoroughbred retirement program that has an office at Woodbine.
Update 3330: Jay Privman takes his look at the Derby picture and how the Graded Stakes earnings is impacting decisions for a couple of horses to run in the Lexington this weekend: Crowded Derby picture still scrambled. The Lexington which is this weekend is two weeks before the Derby and thus not considered a Derby prep, but it is a Graded Stake. Tomcito, third in the Florida Derby, and Atoned are two likely starters in the Lexington that are considering the Derby: Atoned to Run in Lexington Stakes.
Please keep calling and writing.

Barbaro Updates: 561
Posted April 14, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3329: Steve Haskin takes his weekly look at the muddling Derby picture: Ky. Derby Trail: Monba King.
Update 3328: New pictures of Barbaro's 2yo full brother, Nicanor: Long-Awaited Pictures.
Update 3327: A nice and easy morning this morning at Woodbine. We only had four sets, and because a few of them were going to the gate (which does not open until 8:30 am) I did not go into until 7 am. All my horses went nicely and it was just a pleasant and relaxed morning's work. I am now off to meet Jen from Jen's Thoroughblog.
Update 3326: Feedback regarding plans for the Derby and the well being of the horses from the connections of those who ran in the Blue Grass on Saturday: Blue Grass Notes, The Day After. And shipping plans for the top finishers in the Arkansas Derby: Gayego, Z Fortune Shipping to Louisville. It looks like we will have two entrants in the Derby, Pyro and Z Fortune. I am hoping Beau Greely's horse, Tres Borrachos, also gets into the Derby. Andy Durnin will be helping to get him ready in Kentucky. There may also be a filly running: Eight Belles Could Run in Derby.
Less than three weeks to the Derby! With the upset of Pyro over the weekend (lets hope it was a surface issue), the Derby will likely have an overwhelming favorite in the unseasoned Big Brown.
Please keep calling and writing.

Barbaro Updates: 560
Posted April 12, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3325: A full-on racing day for me at Woodbine. After a short break from the morning's work, which included watching Manchester United beat Arsenal on TV, I returned to the track to help with our four runners. It was a fun afternoon while being a long day. We were third in the stakes race with Wonderful Luck. She ran a nice race I think. We had another third in the last race and a couple of horses who ran in the middle. All seemed to come back well and all in all not a bad start to the meet if we include the winner from yesterday. I think it will be cool being a little more involved in the goings on at the barn for this meet. At Houston I only worried about galloping in the morning, and to be honest racing at night (Houston) is simply not as appealing as racing during the day here. Anyway, I am now exhausted after a lot of walking this afternoon!
Update 3324: A little chilly to start the day at Woodbine, but a pleasant morning's work. We are now two riders, and we had six sets each. Three of our sets were going to the gate so we had a wait between the third and fourth sets as the gate does not open until 8:30 am. All my horses went nicely, and I can already appreciate being in a smaller string as it is easier to get to know the horses sooner. Thanks to our winner here yesterday the agent of the jockey brought coffee, donuts and sandwiches. Lets hope we keep having winners and the agents keep us well fed! We have four runners this afternoon so I will head back over to the track to try to help out a little later.
Update 3323: Media reports for the three Derby preps from Saturday:
Blue Grass
Monba tops Pletcher Blue Grass exacta
Pletcher Duo One-Two in Blue Grass
Monba turns back Cowboy Cal in Blue Grass, Pyro tenth
Arkansas Derby
Gayego holds off Z Fortune in Arkansas Derby
Gayego Answers Dirt Question at Oaklawn
Gayego game winner of Arkansas Derby
Holy Bull
Hey Byrn improves his Derby position
Derby Hopes Still Alive for Hey Byrn
Hey Byrn picks up first stakes victory in Holy Bull
Update 3322: Well Pyro did not fire today for whatever reason. He looked a little fractious in the gate, and just did not seem to get running. He came down the lane, on the wrong lead. Lets hope its simply a matter of a disliking to the surface, but not encouraging any way you look at it. Z Fortune ran a better race finishing a closing second in the Arkansas Derby. Gayego was impressive hanging on after sharing the lead with Tres Borrachos in ridiculously fast fractions. Poni Colada ran a decent race to finish second in his first start since he ran up the field in the WinStar Derby, that was good to see. Finally, we are one for one at the Woodbine meet running and winning our first race this afternoon with Piano Tunner (must have been a spelling error!)
Update 3321: Big Brown, the current favorite for the Derby, worked 5/8ths this morning at Palm Meadows: Big Brown Works, Will Ship to KY Apr. 28.
Update 3320: Six racehorses were rescued from Sugarcreek Auction yesterday: Urgent..Sugarcreek NOW!!! Here is a copy of an e-mail describing the journey to the auction of two of the thoroughbreds:
And now for the story about 2 of the original 3 that we first went today to save. This is as the story was told to me via my friend... who prefers to remain anonymous, so we'll just call her Angel, because it just fits..
One gelding and one mare who had left the track yesterday together and then spent the night together in a strange and unfamiliar place not anything like anything they'd ever seen before, were loaded up together again this morning along with 2 other horses and headed off to Sugarcreek.
Upon arrival, Angel watched as they were unloaded and described to me how she could tell by the horses body language and demeanor that the horses were unfamiliar with this type of trailer and the way in which they were being callously handled when rather than being led out of the trailer as they were accustomed to doing, the handler simply started poking a whip through the slats of the trailer to try to get them to make their way out. The gelding started to move to the back of the trailer in order to get out first, but when he looked back the mare was not behind him, he balked as if to wait for her. It was then, that the 2 other horses made their way out and then the gelding followed closely by the mare, left the trailer together in unison.
From there the mare was herded into one pen, while another man tried to herd the gelding into an adjacent pen. The gelding clearly did not want to leave his friend, so he pushed hard against the gate, preventing the man from fully closing the clasp. The gate opened just wide enough for the gelding to quickly slip through and into the same pen with his friend. Angel said it was then that she began to cry, realizing that it was clear that these two had formed some sort of pact..you watch my back and I'll watch yours.
The gelding and mare were then herded like cattle through a series of chutes and aisleways where they were to corralled, again like cattle in order to have their blood drawn for the coggins test. The gelding, not understanding why he was being herded in this manner became confused, whereupon some nasty individual began whipping on him in order to move him forward into the chute. From there, the mare and gelding were one of the first horses to be run through the sales ring, and when they opened the gate to the ring, they were trying to herd the mare in first and alone to be bid on, but again, her fearless and brave companion refused to leave her side...he bravely pushed through the men and into the sales ring he went, determined to protect his friend!! Realizing that they were not going to be able to seperate the gelding and his mare, they opened the bidding on both horses.
Thanks to Angel, and Rachel, and Becky, and all the wonderful people who helped us save these horses today, this incredibly brave and devoted gelding and his mare are now ours! They along with one other gelding are riding in the comfort of a box stall in a beautiful trailer, along with full haybags, and water. The nightmare that began for these two yesterday morning has ended...they are together, and they are safe.
Update 3319: Almost a normal morning of work this morning at Woodbine. We had six to train, five went out before the break (7:30 am breaktime to 8:00 am) and one after the break. I had ridden one of the horses before, in Houston, but they all went nicely for their first day on the track. The rain held off for most of the morning, just catching us a little later. I was finished early (8:30 am) and got on the one 2yo filly I have been freelancing for another trainer in our barn. It was her first time to the main track (with her partner 2yo) hence why we waited until a little later, when there is less traffic on the track. They both went nicely together going once around. Riding babies is a lot easier if their first experience doing something new is a positive experience. Anyway, all in all a nice morning's work.
Update 3318: HTRVs weekly look at the run up to the Derby. This week they assess the out come of the Santa Anita Derby, Wood Memorial and Illinois Derby and look forward to today's Blue Grass and Arkansas Derby: HRTV's Target Louisville - 4/10 (Video).
I assume ESPN is broadcasting at least the Arkansas Derby. Jeannine Edwards was spotted at the track in Hot Springs by Andy Durnin (friend) who is helping to prepare two of the contenders, Victory Pete and Tres Borrachos.
Please keep calling and writing.

Barbaro Updates: 559
Posted April 11, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3317: Power back.
Update 3316: It is "No Power Friday Day" in our environmentally friendly housing complex. Spent the afternoon in the warm HBPA office on the backside of Woodbine. Then went over to the front side to watch a couple of races.
Update 3315: As predicted nothing went out to train today. The horses that shipped in yesterday all walked. I went in and helped out a little bit. We also received two more shipments of horses who will take a couple of days also to settle in. On top of everything else the power went out in our apartment. We all know how much we rely on power, only when the power goes out. More later - Hopefully!
Update 3314: Darren (assistant trainer and my boss) arrived yesterday afternoon around feed time. I met him at the barn and for the first time at Steve's I helped to feed. Our horses are well fed for sure. Things will start to become a normal routine around here in the next day or two, although this morning I am anticipating just walking everything as the new horses just shipped in yesterday and the one filly we have had here worked yesterday.
We do have three runners in the Arkansas Derby this weekend, lets hope Z Fortune can get back on track: Z Fortune Seeks Redemption in Arkansas.

Posted April 10, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3313: This appears to be a positive step forward in the aftercare of the thoroughbred racehorse in the State of California: Auerbach Chairs Horse Retirement Fund.
Update 3312: A hurry up and wait morning this morning. We had a van arriving with nine horses, so I went in early to help everyone get the horses off the van and settled in. The van did not arrive until 7:30 am, so we hung around and chatted while drinking coffee. A time to get to know a little about our new co workers. Once the horses arrived there was plenty of things to do to settle them in. One of my tasks was to check lip tattoos as additional confirmation as to who we have, The filly I have been galloping worked a little today. I supervised the work (went up to watch it anyway and relay instructions on how fast to go) and Emma Jane Wilson tode her. She went very nicely. Alls well. My boss (and room mate) Darren is about five hours away so we should be almost on a normal routine in the next day or so. I did get on my one freelance horse and we went to the training track with her and her buddy. I have now ridden on all three tracks available. Anyway, things are starting to settle in, as I keep meeting new people.
Update 3311: A Storm Cat colt topped the 2 day Keeneland 2yo sale and may end up running in Baku, Azerbaijan: Storm Cat colt tops 2-year-old sale.
Steve Haskin reviews the Blue Grass Stakes on Saturday noting that the main contenders will looking to use this race to prepare for the Derby three weeks later and the outsiders will be looking to use the race to gain necessary Graded stakes earnings: Haskin's Blue Grass Preview: Poly Prices.

updates are now here.
Update 3310: Pyro is favorite and drew post position 7 for the Blue Grass on Saturday at Keeneland: Fighting Fire:11 Face Pyro in Blue Grass.
Update 3309: I posed a question on the discussion board.
Update 3308: A Wednesday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:
Just a quick Wednesday morning update. Yesterday was Bubble Gum's real birthday. Tim and Meghan arrived at the barn to find Mike feeding her birthday mints and carrots. Mike and Meghan quickly proceeded to sing her happy birthday. She seemed a little confused about all of the excitement but was happy to take the treats. Luke is still enjoying his stay at the farm with Whippie and Rosa. It took me a half hour to get him to come in the other night. What a macho man!!! Things are progressing normally at Fair Hill. Horses training, horses eating, horses happy. If the trainer gives me anymore particulars later on today I will give you another update.
Update 3307: A quick update on one of my favorites, the high-stepping Nautical Agent.
Update 3306: A little dreary here this morning at Woodbine, but not too cold! We still only have the one horse here so another easy morning riding her (she went very nicely) and the one additional 2yo I have been getting on for a neighboring trainer. My understanding is we are getting a few horses ship in tomorrow, so after tomorrow work will likely begin to return to normal. I will be excited to get a little more busy!
Update 3305: Aside from the Blue Grass at Keeneland this weekend we also have the Arkansas Derby from Oaklawn (Two key items for Gayego) and the Holy Bull from Gulfstream (Hey Byrn confirmed for Holy Bull). These are the final preps for the Derby, which is then three weeks later (there is a graded stakes the following week but it is typically considered too close to the Derby to count.)
Perennial leading sire Storm Cat is slowing down: Storm Cat Experiencing Problems.

Barbaro Updates: 556
Posted April 8, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3304: Edgar Prado's book on Barbaro: My Guy Barbaro: A Jockey's Journey Through Love, Triumph, and Heartbreak with America's Favorite is being very well received, by the Bloodhorse Prado's Book on Barbaro a Winner and by FOB's here and here.
Update 3303: Superfecta here, with your regular Tuesday Derby Trail update.
The Wood Memorial was billed as the race in which the real War Pass would return, and I believe he did. Challenged for the lead by Inner Light (Court Vision's rabbit), he ran fast early fractions but gamely hung on for second in what looked like an uncomfortable distance for him. At a mile, he'd have been an easy winner. Even loose on the lead in the Derby, I see him being passed at the quarter pole. Tale of Ekati's win reaffirmed my faith in his talent; while he's no lock on Derby Day, he seems to be maturing nicely and I would imagine he's got a nice season ahead of him.
Colonel John stamped himself as the best in the West in the Santa Anita Derby; he ran a great race and was flying at the end, but the question remains -- how will he take to a conventional dirt track? If he likes it, he'll be a serious threat in the Derby.
Denis of Cork is still Derby-bound despite his very disappointing showing in the Illinois Derby, although he could miss the boat if it comes down to graded earnings. Recapturetheglory earned the weekend's highest 3-year-old Beyer in defeating him, but I'm not sure I'm ready to add him to my list -- while I have a lot of respect for his connections (the same as those of Risen Star, who sits atop my 'should've won a Triple Crown' list), I'm not sure what he really beat, given the way the race turned out.
All told, I am in almost complete agreement with the Los Angeles Times -- this year's Derby is shaping up as a full field with a few very legitimate contenders and a lot of no-hopers. I would add a few more to the mix, though; a number of horses are really flying under the radar.
This week's Superfecta Derby Top Ten:
Pyro - Still no major mistakes - next up, the Blue Grass
Big Brown - It's all about the feet (with a little 'experience' thrown in)
Colonel John - Sire Tiznow loved real dirt
Tomcito - I saw a lot to like in the Florida Derby, earnings could be an issue
Tale of Ekati - Nice finish in the Wood
Visionaire - Also in for the Blue Grass, seems to be in great shape
Big Truck - Will Barclay Tagg have two?
Recapturetheglory - nice Beyer in his Illinois Derby upset
Smooth Air - A good showing in the Florida Derby may mean a lot, in retrospect
War Pass - He's only on this list because he could be dangerous if he's allowed the lead, but I really don't see him in the winner's circle at the Derby distance
Update 3302: Another quiet and very pleasant morning at Woodbine. I took our 2yo filly to the track and we were to jog back for a little while before galloping. Since she had not jogged the wrong way yet, and it can be a little unnerving for horses seeing other horses galloping towards them, I asked the person in front of me if she could give me a lead. She said no problem and asked if we were new here. I told her I worked for Steve (Asmussen) and she asked me if I was Alex Brown! Wow, pretty cool I thought. Anyway, she had been following this site as she and her husband used to have Top Bunk! Given that this is a very large backside, it was a pretty cool coincidence. Anyway, I went to their barn after I was done to chat a while about Top Bunk. They were very happy he was retired. I did ride the same other horse I rode yesterday. So another quiet morning, but fun meeting new people.
Update 3301: Steve Haskin takes his weekly look at the Derby picture with a generous assessment of War Pass' performance and a critical view of Denis of Cork's campaign decisions: Ky. Derby Trail: Tale of the Colonel.
On the work tab yesterday was Pyro, preparing for this weekend's Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, going a half in 50.6: Pyro in Final Blue Grass Tuneup, excerpt:
"It was smooth, a typical Asmussen blowout," said Scott Blasi, assistant to Asmussen. Shaun Bridgmohan will ride on Saturday.
Lava Man continues to progress in his comeback notching his fourth workout: Lava Man on Schedule for Khaled Stakes.
Finally yesterday Curlin arrived at Keeneland to begin his break: Horse of the Year Curlin arrives at Keeneland.
Please keep calling and writing.

updates are now here.
Update 3300: A Monday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:
Dreary Monday today but everything is calm after a busy weekend. We ended up scratching Gator on Sunday due to the track conditions. We are sitting on Turf season and would have liked to get a run into him on a good track. He will be ready for Atlantic City. Tail Tails ran on another bad track at Laurel. She broke slowly and ran up to the pack, running third to the head of the lane and then fizzled. She used up so much catching up to the field and then just ran out of gas. She has come home just fine and will live to race another day. Rockin Fun has gone to Delaware Park to see if it will perk him up a bit.
Saturday was another hectic day with lots of breezers and owners. Powdered Donut had a great breeze and had no tie up issues afterward. It looks as though she is moving forward now with her training. Rajasthan had a strong seven eighths of a mile work and is not far from this years turf debut. Saar Treaty stepped up easily to a quarter mile piece of work and handled it like a pro. She is definately the apple of her owner's eye and for good reason!!! There was a small calamity during Our Diva's scheduled breeze. Tim was riding Diva and Jesus Bracho was riding a horse for another trainer, with a furlong out to breeze Jesus broke a stirrup iron and had to pull up. Thankfully the trainer was on the track with another horse so they switched saddles and got back to the work. Sometimes it's amazing that you can count so much on just one small piece of leather.
Luke is enjoying his brief vacation on the farm with the girls. Timmy gets to come in to his stall and Luke will go out with the honeys. Everyone is happy.
Robbie was away on Saturday at a steeplechase meet. He did hit the deck but got up and limped home. He was quite fine this morning.
Update 3299: Another gorgeous morning here at Woodbine. I took our filly to the main track and we galloped a mile. We picked up some company about a half way around which was good. Its nice she can gallop well on her own, but company is important for young horses. I also freelanced another 2yo who is stabled in the same barn. I went with another 2yo and their trainer and we went to the "sand pit" (I think it is called). A good option for "green" horses just getting used to the racetrack environment. They went nicely together. Anyway, it was nice to get on an extra horse and explore the backside a little more.
Now I am in Canada I will likely be following Jen's Thoroughblog a little more. Note in today's entry she mentions the retirement of Top Bunk. Very cool.
Update 3298: Big Brown heads the final Derby pool betting at 3-1, Pyro is next at 5-1 followed by Colonel John at 6-1: Big Brown (3-1) Tops Final Derby Pool. Learn more about the lightly-raced Derby favorite before he became a racehorse: Big Brown No Big Deal As a Sale Horse.

updates are now here.
Update 3297: A gorgeous morning at Woodbine this morning. A little chilly, but bright sunshine. I took our 2yo filly to the gate to stand. The gate does not open until 8:30 am so that will be our new set time until more horses arrive. She was a little anxious when first going into the gate, but then settled down nicely as I chatted to the gate crew. They have two gates here, one for schooling (three quarter pole chute) and one for breaking (quarter pole chute). I will only be visiting one of them! It is also nice to get back on a synthetic track surface to gallop. You can't hear your horse hitting the ground when she gallops. Just very cool. The track is busy though. There must be a couple of thousand horses here! Anyway, a nice pleasant and short morning. On my way out I stopped by the HBPA office and chatted away with the lady who runs that. She gave me some pointers about places to go and see, she also told me about a horse rescue that works directly with the track. I will explore that some next week.
Update 3296: Here are the media reports from the three Derby preps yesterday:
Wood Memorial
Tale of Ekati catches War Pass
Tale of Ekati Takes Wood from War Pass
Tale of Ekati outshines War Pass to win Wood Memorial
Santa Anita Derby
Colonel John proves best of West
Colonel John Commands Santa Anita Derby
Colonel John wins Santa Anita Derby with late rush
Illinois Derby
Recapturetheglory leads every step
Recapturetheglory Shocks Illinois Derby
Recapturetheglory romps to upset win in Illinois Derby.
In other racing news from yesterday, congratulations to jockey Paul Nolan for winning the Grade 3 Connelly Cup at Sam Houston: Scrappy Roo records historic win. Congratualtions also for the Giacomo team for a banner day at Oaklawn Park: Team Moss Rolls to Huge Oaklawn Double.
Update 3295: Some random things from today.
On the Triple Crown trail War Pass flopped again. He really struggled the last quarter of a mile and managed to hang on for second. The closing fractions were simply slow. Tale of Ekati won the Wood Memorial so congratulations to Barclay Tagg and the connections. Unfortunately not an impressive race altogether. Denis of Cork flopped and was never in contention in the Illinois Derby. The race was won by a long shot, like War Pass I would highly doubt Denis of Cork will move forward to the Derby. Colonel John was impressive closing to win the Santa Anita Derby. I think of all the horses that ran today, this is the one that really moved forward.
Top Bunk was purchased after his race today, he is retired. Congratulations to Top Bunk for a tremendous career, lets hope retirement treats you well.
Michael Blowen sent this e-mail regarding Cappucino Kid's arrival at Old Friends:
Cappucino Kid arrived at 7:55 p.m. last night. Considering everything, he's in good shape ... Thanks so much to everyone involved (especially his groomer)...for taking such great care of him...We'll give him a few days to settle in before letting his fans in...I hope that everyone will come and visit ...Thanks again and we'll do our best to give him the dignified retirement he earned....Without everyone working together this never would have happened...Thanks again... Michael.
and
We turned him out for five hours today...He's got a wonderful disposition..We feel ver lucky to have him here...
Update 3294: Joint favorite Comply Or Die took this year's edition of the Grand National: COMPLY IS NATIONAL TREASURE .
Update 3293: It is the final night's racing at Sam Houston Race Park, and looking at the entries it looks like their best set of races for the meet. We have some intriguing runners including New Edition (first time off a layoff, she has been training at the track almost since I arrived), Golden Hare and Student Council. I almost wish I could be there for tonight's events, but today is the opening day for Woodbine: They're at the post. I will go over for a few races, while also keeping an eye on the first at Hawthorne and the Derby preps. All in all, exciting racing everywhere.
Update 3292: A brief morning's work this morning at Woodbine, I had one to ride, a 2yo filly. It was a nice relaxed way to start work up here and a beautiful morning to begin with bright sunshine and not too chilly (I did not go in until 8 am). For her first time on a new track, the filly went very nicely. As we were approaching the tunnel (under the turf track to access the Polytrack) I mentioned to the rider behind me that this was her first time through the tunnel. His response ... "a Yankee horse ?" Pretty funny I guess, but she went through the tunnel like a professional and she also galloped around the track like a professional. A good first morning's work. Everyone was very pleasant.
Update 3291: HRTVs Target Louisville disects Big Brown's impressive win last week and previews the preps today, the Wood Memorial (War Pass should win, but what will it proove: War Pass Has Questions to Answer in Wood), Illinois Derby (Denis of Cork's race to win: Denis of Cork favored to punch Derby ticket
) and the Santa Anita Derby (Colonel John and Yankee Bravo are my picks: Colonel John, El Gato Malo Head SA Derby): HRTV's Target Louisville - 4/03 (Video).
The greatest steeplechase of the year is run today, the Aintree Grand National, in Liverpool. My first boss in racing is now an owner, and she has one of the favorites, Simon: KEEP IT SIMPLE - GO FOR SIMON.

updates are now here.
Update 3290: More great press from the Cappucino Kid rescue, who is now on his way to Old Friends: Rescued Cappucino Kid to Old Friends.
Update 3289: A rescue is ongoing to try to get a pony off a ledge. It has been there all night and crews are busy figuring out what they can do. News here: Horse Stranded, Crews Working Now To Rescue Horse. Discussion here: Urgent - anyone in Ohio?.
Update 3288: Aqueduct canceled racing today ahead of their biggest day of racing for the year tomorrow: Aqueduct Cancels to Protect Surface. A little snow mixed in the with rain here in Toronto!
Update 3287: A rainy grey morning this morning at Woodbine. We do have one horse here so far, she had the day off today but may go to the track tomorrow. I went in to check on her and explore the backside a little more. I watched a little training to be oriented with the main track and its proximity to our barn, which is very close. It is a large backside and there was a lot of activity despite the rainy weather. The meet beings tomorrow so it should be a fun weekend!
Update 3286: It is springtime and that means it is time for Keeneland, which opens today under threatening weather: Springtime for racing.
Curlin has arrived back in the States after his very impressive World Cup victory: Curlin Ships Back to Belmont from Dubai, excerpt:
"He shipped very well, drank a lot of water, and was feeling good walking around the shedrow," Blasi said. "He ate well last night, which I would expect him to do because he always has, and we're excited about getting him back to Lexington."
Please keep calling and writing.

updates are now here.
Update 3285: A terrific chat with Brad and John Hennegan, who made the movie The First Saturday in May, which is going into distribution very shortly. DVDs will also be available: John & Brad Hennegan Directors, Producers and Writers, "The First Saturday in May".
Update 3284: A Thursday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:
Just a quick update for this wonderful Thursday morning. Molly has made a full recovery from her race the other day. She has come out of it great and couldn't look any better. We are not sure what our next move will be with her. Gator Nation has continued to train well and we tried to enter in a grass race for this Saturday but he didn't get in. We'll try again. Tail Tails is entered to run on the turf at Laurel on Friday and of course we are slated to get rain so it may be on the dirt. Either way, she is happy and training great! Rockin Fun continues his quest towards the races and so far does everything we ask of him. Who's Happy continues to tote Tim around the track, direction doesn't seem to matter as our new trick of galloping the wrong way only worked for a short while. She is strong. Rajasthan loves going accross the fields and so far has not skipped a beat. Our Diva has a strong personality and so far has managed to keep her teeth to herself behind her screen. Thank Goodness!!
Powdered Donut has turned the corner in the tight muscle department. She likes her new diet and we now can continue to push towards the races. I promise to shortly have the babies updated on this website.
Tonight is tax night (OMG), at least it will be over with. I don't know if any of you have seen the commercial of these two guys talking with big guys(taxes) hanging off their shoulders(all relating to the idea of a weight being on your shoulders). That is exactly how I feel about Tim's taxes. Wish us luck!!!
P.S. - Veiled Reference is for now on the farm with me and doing just fine. She loves all of her new buddies and has really filled out looking much stronger. She will have a great vacation.
Update 3283: I went over to the track this morning to get licensed and have a look around the backside. Security at Woodbine is pretty tight relative to other racetracks I have been, but I did end up getting my license so am now good to go. I went over to Steve Owen's barn, he was the guy I met yesterday and has been very helpful in settling me in. They had finished training but he introduced me to a few people over a cup of coffee. I also met Julie, the Stakes coordinator. She had been helpful prior to my arrival letting me know what I needed to bring to get licensed (a letter from a steward at Sam Houston estblishing I was in good standing). I also met Vinny, who will be our shedrow foreman.
All in all a pleasant morning meeting people and getting things sorted out. It looks like our horses are not coming until next week so it might be a nice quiet few days for me.
Update 3282: Steve Haskin previews the three Derby preps this weekend and also includes an interview with War Pass' owner. War Pass is set to run in the Wood Memorial this weekend: Derby Hopefuls Face Do or Die Weekend, excerpt:
"It's true that champion horses respond to that kind of adversity and somehow they prevail, but in this case, the horse we all saw at the top of the stretch was not the same horse we saw three weeks earlier who cruised home in 1:36 and wasn't even blowing at all. This was a horse that was in distress, and the most plausible explanation I have for that today is that he flipped his palate. We scoped him after the race and there was no congestion and no issues. But for a horse to be in that much distress, that, to me, would be the most probable explanation."
Please keep calling and writing.

Barbaro Updates: 551
Posted April 2, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3281: I have truly left the US, the news just used the term "gob-smacked"! One thing that did surprise me was how easy it was to enter Canada. I had to show my passport, green card, and answer 2 - 3 questions about my US status and my plans for being in Canada (working for a US company) and that was it. No passport stamp, no visa needed. Just very straightforward. I am now going to need to get used to celsius, kilometers and other terms. But Canadians do still drive on the right side of the road.
I am not sure yet when we will have horses here, so it might be a nice quiet couple of days for me to settle in. My direct boss and roommate, Darren (one of Steve's main assistants), is still in Houston!
News on a couple of the pending Derby preps this weekend: Colonel John, El Gato Malo Head SA Derby and Illinois Derby: Denis of Cork Faces Six.
Update 3280: Pinch me! I have moved from a grotty motel just off a busy highway to a penthouse suite overlooking Woodbine! Very cool. I arrived at Woodbine, had a quick look around and then met a trainer Steve Owen, who showed me to my new digs. Just very very nice.
Update 3279: I am in Canada!
Update 3278: A bright but very chilly morning this morning at Finger Lakes Race Track. I went to see trainer John Tebbutt who I had met at Presque Isle last year when I ran a horse for him. The main track was closed (they were working on it but I think it was frozen) but the training track was being used. I went to watch a few horses train but could only stand out there in the chilly wind for about ten minutes. I had better get prepared for Woodbine! And now off to Canada.
Update 3277: Jay Privman reviews the Derby situation and explores the impact of Graded Stakes earnings effecting the decisions of the contenders leading up to the race: Who'll make the Derby cut? Big Brown has now moved to the head of the Derby pool: Big Brown Choice in Final 'Future' Pool.
I am off to spend an hour or two on the backside at Finger Lakes.
Please keep calling and writing.

Posted April 1, 2008
updates are now here.
Update 3276: I have arrived at Finger Lakes and am currently in the tackroom of the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program. Quite an impressive facility and certainly front and center in terms of visibility when people arrive for the races. There are about six or seven horses currently here (the meet has not begun) and I watched a potential adoptee ride a horse for trial in the indoor ring they have attached to the barn. They are looking for a horse for trail riding and giving lessons. A very impressive set up really, and the horse went very nicely so hopefully he will be adopted out. I am listening to a lot of talk about their adoption application process!
Update 3275: Superfecta here, with your Tuesday Derby trail update.
After a digesting a great weekend of racing with the Dubai World Cup and a fascinating Florida Derby, I have prepared for your reading pleasure the official 'If The Derby Were Saturday' list of who I'd like to see in the starting gate, along with their next (actual) start. You'll notice there are not 20 entrants in this little exercise:
| Pyro | A model of consistency, albeit one with low Beyers | Blue Grass |
| Tomcito | May have unreported earnings from Peru, which apparently do count
| Coolmore Lexington |
| Big Brown | Great performance, but still light on experience | Kentucky Derby |
| Visionaire | Seems to be improving at the right time | Blue Grass |
| Denis of Cork | Why the carousel of entries before picking a prep race? | Illinois Derby |
| El Gato Malo | Benefits from Georgie Boy's absence | Santa Anita Derby |
| Big Truck | Earnings are a question | Coolmore Lexington |
| War Pass | I still don't think he wants the Derby distance, but could bounce back | Wood Memorial |
| Salute the Sarge | Has a lot of training time to make up | Coolmore Lexington? |
| Z Humor | I'm not a huge fan, but can't argue with his earnings | Illinois Derby |
| Smooth Air | Did he face a monster in Big Brown? | Kentucky Derby |
| Court Vision | Perhaps with some improvement
| Wood Memorial |
| Tale of Ekati | Looking for redemption in the Wood, great workouts | Wood Memorial |
| Eight Belles | Filly has a 100 Beyer and could still try the Arkansas Derby | Fantasy Stakes |
| Proud Spell | Her numbers beat those of Pyro in Louisiana | Ashland Stakes
|
Of the top 20 graded stakes earners, Georgie Boy and Adriano are (almost) definitely not being considered for the Derby, but I would prefer to thin the ranks further. I would toss out Kodiak Kowboy, Anak Nakal, Majestic Warrior and Halo Najib; they simply have not impressed me enough lately.
Let's recall that Chelokee won finished third in (as you clever people who have been paying attention already know - and thanks!) last year's Florida Derby and skipped the Kentucky Derby (although he made a nice return to racing at Gulfstream over the weekend, finishing ahead of Rehoboth in an allowance race). A lot can happen in five weeks.
Finally, for those of you who have difficulty with time management, Google has solved that problem too!
Update 3274: A change of plan for me today. Our horses have not yet shipped to Woodbine, so I will head north but plan to stop around the Finger Lakes area. I may try to stop by and see the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program.
Update 3273: Georgie Boy, a leading West Coast Derby contender, is off the Derby path with a pulled muscle in his back. The injury occured in his most recent work: Georgie Boy Injured; Out of Derby.
The venerable Perfect Drift is back in training and has now worked twice: Perfect Drift Appears Eager to Race.
More press for the Cappucino Kid save from a feedlot: Half brother to Medaglia d'Oro rescued in Washington.
Please keep calling and writing.
