1979 Bay colt by Staff Writer, a son of Northern Dancer and out of Timely Roman who was a granddaughter of Tim Tam.
Owned by Nitram stable, Timely Writer was one of the best 2 year olds of 1982. He won the G1 Champagne, G1 Hopeful and was placed in the Futurity and Saratoga Special. As a 3 year old he won the G1 Flamingo and G1 Florida Derby (like Barbaro). A bout with colic kept him out of the Kentucky Derby where he would likely have been the favorite. He was syndicated for stud and the Jockey Club gold cup was to be his last race. He fatally broke down on the turn for home as he was making a bid to win. He is buried at the head of the stretch at Belmont park. A horse who should not have been forgotten so easily.
