Introduction
There are many horse rescue organizations throughout North America. They come in many shapes and sizes and operate very differently. Some attend horse auctions and compete with Kill buyers to rescue horses from horse slaughter. Some take in rescues in their local area. Some rehabilitate horses to enable them to live a productive and useful life in a new career (horse racing to show jumping for example), some are forever homes for old and infirmed horses.
The section below lists horse rescues that participate on alexbrownracing discussion boards in terms of fundraising. Each link will take you to each rescue's page where the rescue describes the type of rescue it does, the fundraising it has done on ABR. The rescue can use the page to keep Fans of Barbaro up to date with the horses. We also have a page that lists supported horses of FOBs. FOBs who visit a rescue or have experiences with a rescue can also add their feedback to the rescue page.
There is also a special page to remember those rescued horses that have gone to the rainbow bridge: Remembrance Over The Rainbow Bridge Members or rescues can add those horses who have passed on in this special section.

Contentious horse rescue issues
Tension among horse rescue organizations is a result of the following issues:
a. whether to buy from a feedlot and / or kill buyers (inflating their profits yet being a last resort for horses destined for slaughter) versus competing with kill buyers at auction (increasing the cost of the horse to the kill buyer)
b. guaranteeing a forever home for a rescued horse (adoption contracts etc.) versus simply rescuing a horse from a current situation
c. the potential for hoarding
d. competition for funding
e. whether to save an adoptable horse (easier to move on) versus an old / infirmed horse (more at risk of being slaughtered)
f. public (no profit with tax relief for donors) versus private rescues

IAADP has established an emergency veterinary fund to provide financial aid to United States IAADP Partner Members whose assistance dogs require high cost veterinary intervention beyond their ability to pay.
The Mosby Foundation is an all volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization specializing in paying medical expenses for sick, abused and neglected dogs. Many of these dogs have been abandoned with no one to speak on their behalf, or to help them live the lives all dogs are meant to live. Others have owners with limited means for providing adequate medical attention for their pets. Completion of an application requesting financial assistance is required. Verification of medical need and medical services is made with the attending veterinary hospital. Each request is reviewed individually to determine the amount of funding the applicant could receive. Payment is made directly to the attending hospital. The Mosby Foundation also offers the following programs for assistance: Spay/Neuter fund and Humane Education for elementary schools.

Feline Veterinary Emergency Assistance (FVEAP)
The Feline Veterinary Emergency Assistance Program is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides financial assistance to cat and kitten guardians who are unable to afford veterinary services to save their companions when life-threatening illness or injury strikes.
Cats in Crisis Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals and humane organizations care for cats with chronic or emergency medical conditions through financial and fundraising assistance.

The Fund does not accept applications from individuals. Only AAHA-accredited veterinary practices can apply for a grant on behalf of the pet in need. Assistance is limited to $700 per AAHA-accredited practice per calendar year. The maximum available to each family is $500 per year and $1000 lifetime.
