Description of Rescue
Evelyne Zedan founded Zedan Ranch in 1993. As a one woman show she has rescued and nursed back to health over 30 horses.
Zedan Ranch is a non-profit organisation(O.N.L.U.S) based in Italy, taking in frail, old, sick and abandoned horses in from the local area or buying them from the butcher. Many of the horses have been exploited: either ridden excessively whilst lame or suffering from joint pains or ridden until their usefulness is over. It is very upsetting to know how many horse owners, once the horse is no longer rideable, leave their 'beloved' animals for horse meat at the butcher. These faithful animals deserve more than that.
At Zedan Ranch the horses are provided with food, shelter, veterinary care and love that they deserve. Once back to health the horses live the rest of their lives out in foothills of the dolomites where Zedan Ranch has its farm.
The aim of Zedan Ranch is to act as shelter and Rescue and provide awareness of animal welfare to the local community. This is very important. Horses deserve respect, moreover many well doing owners will neglect animals. Take the case of Martin. Martin arrived at the Shelter in May 2007. He was about 400 pounds under weight. The veterinarians diagnosis after a thorough
examinations and blood test was: SEVERE STARVATION AND MALNUTRITION 50% CHANCE OF SURVIVAL.
The harsh and deprived way Martin lived, also led to other problems. Lung emphysema, heart trouble and neurological issues.
Despite his owner' conviction that his emaciated body due to "being old", he immediatly started to gain weight once he arrived at the Shelter.
By eating dust free hay cups 6 times a day, receiving vitamins, minerals, joint supplements and TLC, Martin continues to gain weight daily. A bronchial inhealer helps his lungs, massages and
long walks help his body peace, love and food guaranteed help his mind.
This is just one of the many horses at Zedan Ranch.
There have been education programs with local scouts, youth and church. These groups have also donated manpower to barn, volunteering to fix things, groom horses and help in fundraising events. As it is located to Aviano USAF base and close to border of Austria and Germany, there are many American, Italian and German visitors. Money is raised mainly through donations, however, horses fit to ride are leased out to riders who are respectful of their equine partner and respect for the limitations of the horse.
Zedan Ranch is constantly looking for help, financial and volunteering. Please visit our site and hope to see you at barn soon.
