Located in Davenport, Washington, approximately 30 miles west of the city of Spokane, Stockland holds a monthly horse auction on the 3rd Saturday of every month at 1:00 p.m.
An average of 25 to 30% of the horses brought to this auction are purchased by kill buyers for slaughter. There are three kill buyers who frequent this sale every Saturday, Jack Paluso, "Oly Olson," and the owner of Stockland, Ted Kerst, also purchases horses for slaughter through his employees and other contacts.
The auction is busiest in the Spring and Summer months, with an average of 80 head at each sale.
The majority of these horses are sold at the latter part of the sale, and are termed "loose horses," although kill buyers at this auction can and do bid on other horses during the auction that are not bringing high bids, regardless of age, condition, temperament or training.
Cattle sales are held at Stockland every Monday, and a few horses are occasionally brought in to auction at this sale also. Horses brought during the Monday sale are normally in very poor condition and are purchased by kill buyers in attendance.
There is no vet on site at the Saturday horse auctions. Injured, pregnant, and blind horses are sent through the sale and sold to kill buyers at the Saturday auction on a regular basis.
Coggins fees for out-of-state purchase of horses are $52.50 per head. Bloodwork is done by a vet on the premises Monday following the sale, and results are sent to Stockland by Thursday of that week.
