Bio
I am a wife-mother-grandmother-piano teacher who lives on the outskirts of Charlotte, NC. My children/grandchildren are scattered from Charlotte, to Ohio, to Thailand.
Horse experience
Most of my up-close horse experiences have consisted of petting one through the safety of a fence. I did try to ride a horse once, about 30 years ago, but basically the horse just stood still (which I suppose is better than the horse taking off in a wild gallop!). Barbaro is the first horse I fell in love with, albeit from a distance.
FOB activities
I found TWR not long after Barbaro's injury at the Preakness - and have checked in on an almost daily basis - to read updates, post a message, or visit the chat room. Last summer (2006), when Barbaro was wrestling with laminitis in his left hind, I was traveling in Southeast Asia. I always managed to find a computer so I could check in at TWR to read Alex's latest Barbaro update.
On an individual level, I contribute to a variety of horse rescues I've learned about through TWR sites - as well as UPenn's Barbaro Fund and Laminitis Research Fund. In addition, I am active in the anti-horse slaughter campaign through TWR.
On a group level, in May, 2007, through the teamwork of fellow FOBs, we presented Dr. Dean Richardson with an original piece of artwork depicting him and Barbaro - along with a $2,000 contribution to the Laminitis Research Fund.
In following Barbaro on his journey, I've learned so many things about equine health - how powerful-yet fragile they are. I've also learned a lot about horse racing, which I had never followed before Barbaro. Sadly, I also became aware of horse slaughter in our country. I have always admired the horse for their beauty and spirit - but through Barbaro, a love for these noble beings has blossomed infinitely.
