Rubiano Ruby's Story
Ruby's beginnings are still a mystery but what we have been able to piece together so far is that her Dam was offered for sale at a Keenland broodmare auction after she had been booked to Rubiano. It was shortly after that mating that Rubiano, a 1.5 million dollar career earnings and Eclipse winner, contracted a fatal case of Laminitus. BAYNETTEBABE was believed to be pregnant at the time she was offered for sale. It is stated that Ruby was then foaled in Minnesota. The trail then leads us to a MN Bred yearling sale where she was purchased by SEJ Stables of Minnesota and began her training in 2005. She started her racing career at Canterbury Park in Minneapolis/ St Paul sometime around the summer of 2006. She did well in her three year old and four year old campaign and was never claimed from SEJ Stable. In 2007 there was a rumor around the track that she had sustained a minor leg injury, but she returned to the races at Canterbury for the 2008 summer meet. Ruby was entered in approx 4 races over the summer and never was able to finish any better than 5th or 6th, sometimes coming in last place. In August she was sold off the track ( out the backdoor) to another trainer/owner and was brought to small tracks in North Dakota and Montana. She came in second in one race and sixth in another, racing against low level claiming horses.
It is here that the Fans of Barbaro stepped into the story. Leslie Morley and Carol Cusano had taken an interest in Ruby because Carol owned another of Rubiano's offspring. Her horse HANDSOME ( racing name ROVER ) was related to Ruby by way of their sire. The Fans of Barbaro in the state of MN decided to see if Ruby could be purchased and retired. We had feared that a horse that found herself in these circumstances, was only a short distance from the Canadian border and could easily find her way into an auction or risk further life threatening injury if she continued to race. On Oct 20th 2008, Ruby was purchased from the current owner and brought to a farm in Western Wisconsin for rest and acclaimation to life off the track.
