Ponytales Rescue is a small Non Profit Corporation Incorporated in the State of Pennsylvania under the entity # 3777104. Ponytales Euthanasia Policy
Ponytales will not euthanize a horse unless we have consulted with our veterinarian who has personally seen and worked on said horse. We will euthanize a horse for the following reasons:
Emergency (Colic, Severe Trauma) Pain (foundered, broken bones, cancer) Inability to function in a manner that horses were meant to function in (Stall bound, Unsound to the point of being in constant discomfort and unable to ambulate) Dangerous and unadoptable (severely aggressive horses)
That said all options will first be exhausted before resorting to euthanasia. Horses with emotional issues will be given ample time to turn-around and/or will be sent to a professional trainer before any decision is made to euthanize them, we will also try to place the horse in a sanctuary type situation first and only euthanize when all other options have been exhausted. In the case of an emergency every effort will be made to get a veterinarian here promptly. Due to our location this is not always possible and if we have a horse suffering in agonizing pain we will end their suffering with a bullet to the head. THIS IS IN EXTREME CASES ONLY!!! All other times the horse will be sedated by our veterinarian first, then given a lethal dose of sodium pentathol to stop their bodily function and end thier life. I will ALWAYS be present when this is done talking to the horse and petting the horse the whole time. All horses euthanized here are also buried here.
1. Name of rescue and their address, city, state, zip and telephone number.
Ponytales Rescue - 1096 Bethany Turnpike, Honesdale, PA 18431 (570)253-6727
2. Name of person who is soliciting funds and their relationship to the rescue Any solicitation of funds on this board will come from me and only me. 3. Primary sources of funding: private donations, (fundraisers, memberships, grants, other). Fundraisers, recycling, nutritional consulting business, donations
4. Do you received any funding from any federal, state, or local entities? No
5. Are you a registered non-profit (501C-3)? No, we are not a 501(c) 3 but we are a registered non-profit corporation in the state of PA and have a federal EIN number for our corporation
6. What year was your rescue started? 2007 although we had done very small scale rescue for 10 years prior
7. How many horses (on average) are in your rescue's care at any given time? No more then 6 rescue horses at any given time
8. Where do the majority of your rescue horses come from? ( private parties, government seizures, local sources, auctions, kill buyers) Anywhere really. For example right now we have 1 OTTB, an auction rescue, and 3 from a local farm that had a neglect/abuse type situation
9. Do you seek to adopt-out most of your rescue horses or are you more of a sanctuary? If you do adopt-out, what are your guidelines/adoption policies? We try to adopt all animals out as we really do not have room to be a sanctuary. We have an adoption application which asks various questions about how they plan on caring for the animal, and what their intentions are for the animal. Then we ask for vet, farrier, and personal references. We do a site check in most cases as well. If we are satisfied with the animals care after 1 year it will belong to the adopter. We offer a lifetime return policy on any animal adopted through us.
10. Are you affiliated with or work with any other rescues in your area? If so, which ones? Nobody in particular, whoever we need to network with we do. I also volunteer my time to help CanterPA
11. How many employees or volunteers do you have to assist you? It is just me
12. What is your position on slaughter - for, against, or on a case by case basis? I do not believe that slaughter is a humane means of euthanasia and I am against it.
13. Who is your primary vet and may we contact them for a reference? If so, please provide their name and clinic number. My primary vet is Dr. Sheila Cashin from Carbondale Veterinary Hospital 198 Canaan Street, Carbondale, PA (570)282-0744 and yes you may contact her

15. What happens to your horses and your rescue if something happens to you? (family or friends would take over, foundation or other agency would take over, absorbtion into another rescue, shut down, unsure)My husband has written directives as to how to deal with whatever horses are in our care, which include trying to adopt them out (since we do not sanctuary any) or getting another rescue to take them in.

My husband and I visited Laurie's farm in August and found all of the horses to be very well taken care of and thriving under her care. She has several pastures separated by electric fencing and horses of all different breeds, sexes, and ages. She has a barn which she recently installed several new stalls as to provide winter shelter. The barn and fields were clean and well taken care of.
We spoke with Laurie for several hours and found her very knowledgeable on rescue and care of neglected horses. She is a vet tech by trade and this showed in our conversation. Each horse had a specific nutritional plan geared towards their special needs and to bring them back or sustain them in maximum health.
Laurie is currently working to assist in placement of neglected horses at a local farm. We helped her trailer 2 small ponies back to her farm which she had found private adopters to take. Laurie has dealt with the farm owner very professionally to try and save as many of these horses as she can - this has been an extremely difficult situation. County officials have refused to step in and seize the horses, so unfortunately, Laurie has been at the mercy of the owner. FOBs helped her raise additional funds to secure several horses from the property once placement arrangements were worked out. All funds raised have gone to purchase price and direct care until the horses were moved to their new homes or rescues. She is currently working to purchase the rest of the horses from this farm and place them in good homes or into a rescue situation. Jen Stein - Midknight1
I like your wiki page, Ponytales! All questions asked and a sound policy on euthanasia. Good job! ...now we just need some pics... :)(which I know you are probably working on) swedishkat 1/25/08 Actually I am a WIKI idiot and I don't know how to do these things, I tried to add pictures and I just got a [1] that someone has to click on to see the picture, would you like to help??? SURE, it would be my pleasure! I fixed the FOBhorses above. Now by clicking on the horses names, it will take you to the ABR-thread. Barbara's picture came up too, but SD's I think has to be on photobucket (like Barbara's) or similair online place (like Flickr etc) to work. For pics, NO BRACKETS around the html-link.
If you go into "edit" you can see how it is set up, for future help, or go into anybody's wiki-page, hit "edit" and see how they have set things up. As long as you don't "save" you won't mess anything up! :) Let me know if I can help with anything else wiki-related. :) Kat
I just wanted to share my visit with Laurie Brinkworth at Ponytales on friday. Our latest addition is Barbara and what a beautiful horse. I walked in to the barn and the music was playing and inside the stall was this beautiful black horse with brown on her nose. She 's very shy but what a beauty. If you get the chance please go to the website and visit her. Laurie has such magic with her horses they all love her and come right up to her. We tried some pepermints and she would not take anything from me. I 'll keep trying. Laurie's other horses are beautiful also. They were in the field with there blankets on and walked right up to us. They love Laurie, she is so good with them.
Laurie is so knowledgeable regarding horses I really need to get up there more often so I can really learn all about them. As soon as the weather breaks I will. What a wonderful visit, it really lifted my spirits during this long winter. Sueroll
