Description of Rescue

Peace Love and Animals is a 501(c)3 nonprofit no-kill animal rescue in Tanner, AL. We are located on the same property as Bark Avenue Pet Resort, a local boarding and grooming facility. We currently have around 40 rescued dogs in our care that we are rehabilitating and finding homes for.

Cathy Oakley, owner of Bark Avenue, is the Director of Peace Love and Animals. Helping her are Tammy Sheehan (Finances) and Rose Breiner (Volunteer Coordination).

PL&A was founded in September 2009 by a group who was concerned about the high kill rate at The Dog Pound in Athens, AL. Because of this, our primary goal when we have space is to pull dogs from the pound. We have also accepted strays in need of help and owner turn-ins on occasion.

PL&A has a primary shelter facility located in a barn just behind the Bark Avenue Boarding facilities. Our shelter is still under construction as of 10/2010. We also have many foster parents helping us care for our rescues - anyone wishing to foster can fill out the form on our website.

At PL&A we have zero employees - all work is done by volunteers. Because of this we are always looking for more help! If you would be interested in volunteering, please see our website for more information. Typical volunteer duties include cleaning, walking dogs, playing with dogs, working at adoption events, paperwork, bathing dogs, and helping feed.

To adopt one of our dogs, an interested family must first fill out an application. We then do a vet reference and a home visit to ensure that the environment and family will be the right fit for the dog. When all that is done, we have the new owners sign a contract and ask a small donation to further the work of our rescue.

PL&A is open 7 days a week from 7am to 6pm, and welcomes anyone who is interested to come out and visit our dogs and tour the facility.
