Description of Rescue

NorCal Equine Rescue is a 501(c)(3) federal non-profit since 2004, TIN 20-1156396. We are located near Oroville, Ca 1 hour north of Sacramento, about 10 miles from highway 70. We specialize in giving good horses a second chance at life, while rescuing, rehabilitating and then placing into homes equines of all needs levels as funds and room permit. We have a base ranch operation of 10 acres, with a long term lease of 10 years, with a leased 10 acres bordering our land and also an irrigated 10 acre pasture about 20 miles from us for a total of 30 acres.

Our potential adopters are screened and must provide at a minimum 2 personal references and a veterinarian and farrier reference. The adoption is not finalized for 6 months at which time they must have either a staff member or a licensed veterinarian fill out an equine bill of health. We typically do not foster horses in private homes unless we determine it is in the best interest of the horse. Our Policies.

We are on the road so much that our visitor hours are limited to Sunday through Friday by appointment. Our insurance does not allow people wandering around at will without signing a liability release, and so a staff member must be present during all visits. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to come out and meet the horses.

The most exciting recent developments is our invitation to appear on Animal Planet TV network in February. Watch for us in the PetFinder Series premiere show.

Euthanasia Policy

We never put an equine to sleep if we cannot adopt it.  If a new home cannot be found the equine stays at our facility or foster home and lives out its life. We do not want to put any equine to sleep. An equine is never to be shot or otherwise killed other than by humane euthanasia unless it is an extreme emergancy and there is absolutely no alternative. The only time we do put an equine to sleep is when:

An equine is not mobile and a veterinarian is of the opinion that mobility will not return;

An equine's quality of life is deemed so poor and a veterinarian is of the opinion that humane euthanasia is the most humane option within NER's means;

An equine is experiencing continual pain for which there in no medical relief or the relief is not within the financial capability of NER;

An equine is affected by a degenerative medical condition for which there is no cure or not within NER's means;

An equine is extremely dangerous to itself, other animals or humans;

An equine has a terminal painful illness;

We do not want to put any equine to sleep, but sometimes it is the kindest thing to do.

We have only had an equine euthanized once, and that was due to severe founder and upon the strong recommendation of our vet (after having x-rays to confirm the severity of the founder) and our bare foot trimmer who works absolute wonders with tough cases, such as Spike. We will only have an equine euthanized under the direct recommendation of our veterinarian or other qualified personal OR in an extreme emergency.
