Notes on EXCELLER (USA) (Sept 1997)

Exceller has 64 registered foals in Sweden (excl Norway and Denmark) from the years 1992 through 1995. His first crop (of 1992) consists of 34 registered foals from which 23 were starters and 17 winners.

In 1993 there was a crop of 25 registered foals, 18 have run and 11 are winners.

In 1994 there were only 9 registered, 6 have run and there has been one winner. Incidentally the sole winner of the 1994 crop is Swedishbred Pirion (ex Comic Muse by Gregorian), that last night (Sept 2nd, 1997) ran 2nd to winning Salad Days (ire) in the Swedish equivalent of the Breeders’ Cup, called Breeders’ Trophy, 1950 m turf for 3-year-olds being offspring to anyone of the 37 locally based sires affiliated to the Swedish “Breeders’ Cup” scheme.

In the process Norwegian owned and trained Pirion moved Exceller up on the stallion list here and the former US Champion is now 5th on the General Sires list in Sweden as per today.

The Swedish Breeders’ Trophy is one of the three biggest races (prizemoneywise) in the country with its 1.200.000 SEK total (split as 576.000-192.000-96.000-57.000-39.000 SEK to the first five horses and 144.000-48.000-24.000-14.000-10.000 SEK to the first five breeders).

Finally, in 1995 there is a small crop of 4 registered foals. They are now 2-year-olds. No one has run to date and only one, Excella, is reported to be in training.

Exceller was 2nd on the sire list (2-year-olds) in 1994. In 1995 he was 6th on the General Sire list. In 1996 he was 4th on the General Sire list.

EXCELLER (USA)

b h 1973 Vaguely Noble (IRE) - Too Bald (USA), by Bald Eagle (USA), bred by Mrs Charles W Engelhard in Kentucky, USA.

Exceller was imported by Göte Östlund from the USA to Sweden in 1990 and entered stud in Sweden in 1991, his first crop was dropped in 1992, last in 1995. Covered only in seasons 1991 through 1994. Reported dead in April 1997.

Exceller’s stud record in Scandinavia (he stood first in Sweden and was later moved to Denmark, but did not cover in that country) was cut short from a klebciella infection that prevented him from covering (and being allowed to cover) to a full extent. Therefore, the only crops to consider are the first two which he covered in 1991 and 1992. He was 2nd on the list of sires regarding 2-y-o offspring with his first crop and 4th on the general sire list in 1996, his best results.

Exceller sired two classic winners, Pirion, dropped as a foal in Sweden, but then moved to Norway and bred there, accounting for the Swedish St Leger in 1997, and the Swedishbred Screwdriver, winning the Danish St Leger one year earlier, in 1996. At the time of this writing, in March 2003, there are 37 registered offspring in Sweden with Exceller as maternal grandsire.

Exceller was also the leading jump sire in 1999, thanks to his son Martello's success in steeplechase.[1]
