MARYSUE
From AlexBrownRacing
Our First Rescue together
Story :
MarySue is a 4/5 year old OTTB mare who was rescued by the MD FOB's and brought to NLER for rehabilitation. When she arrived it was clear that MarySue had leg issues that would need to be addressed. Her racing plates were pulled by our farrier, Patty Lynch, and it was obvious that she was in considerable pain. Dr. Kabala was out to do x-rays and it was determined that at some point MarySue had sustained a serious crushing injury to her left knee and the damage is severe enough that she is not a good candidate for surgery. She has severe degenerative disease in that knee and will always be limited by this injury. It was also discovered that MarySue has a canon bone fracture and she will need to be confined for 3 months to allow the cannon bone to heal. In mid-July she will be x-rayed again to see if the fracture has healed. If the fracture heals well she will then be available for adoption. MarySue is an incredibly sweet girl and has made a lot of progress toward recovery. She shows no indication that she is in pain now and will hopefully be rideable as a walking trail horse when her rehab is completed. She is the most non-spooky TB I've ever worked with and really loves people and attention.
3/10/07 This is from our first meeting of the FOB's and Marysue. The FOBS spent the day clearing debris out of her pasture.

UPDATES
7/11/07: Mary Sue had new X-rays taken by Dr.Kabala and her
canon bone fracture has healed, but she will need a
little more time in a restricted area to continue
her healing.
7/18/07: Mary Sue will be released into the barnyard either
this evening or tomorrow morning as time allows.
She is going to be sooooo happy.
7/20/07: You should have seen her when I turned her out in
the barn yard today. She just stood there with me
for a few moments and then she realized that she
was FREE. She ran and bucked and spun and did a
couple of great sliding stops. That was one happy
girl.
7/20/07: MarySue is so happy she can hardly stand
herself. She trots around in the barnyard with her
little head held high for all the world to see.
Remember how she would stay away when she first
came? Well now she is "into" whatever I am
doing. As I was bending down to fill the ponies
water buckets she was nibbling on my pockets
looking for treats! I wonder how she learned that
bad habit??? It is so good to see her enjoying
herself. I can't wait to see her out in the
pasture and free to run to her hearts content.
That time will be here soon.
7/22/07: I took MarySue down to the pen and she was in
soooo excited. She even got a little canter
in and was just having a grand time. I put the pen
down under a huge tree that should provide her with
shade for most of the day. The only thing we will
need to be concerned about is when the other horses
come up to visit. She is rather excitable. lol
7/23/07: MarySue has settled down a little and is enjoying
her new space. Although she has made a nice path
around the pen from her pacing. I'm still adding
the relaxing vitamins to her feed until she can go
out into a real pasture and run to her hearts
content. A few weeks of this and she should be
ready to go home.
7/24/07: MarySue has worn her little paddock down to a
dust bowl but she is getting some great exercise.
8/3/07: MarySue has another week in the barnyard and
then she is free to go home with her new Mom and
Dad. I'm really going to miss the moody little
Princess but I am so happy to see her go to Ted
and Amby where she will be spoiled and pampered as
any Princess should be.
8/9/07: MarySue received her official traveling papers
today. Dr. Kabala has given her a clean bill of
health and his blessing to begin her new life. Ted
and Amby are preparing to take her home and make
her the spoiled and pampered Princess that she
deserves to be. It has been a very good day for
the MD FOBs first rescue.
from Amby - For the record - Mary Sue weighs
appox 930 lbs, she has a body condition of a 4.
(I was not sure if that was good or bad until it
was explained) She is right at optimal weight.
Teeth are quite the ugly picture but healthy none
the less. She got every shot known to horses !!!
The doctor put her on oats for the next solid week
to clear up some stomach issues. Cathy has added
some weird stuff to her water and feed for the
stomach and she should be all set to go !!! She
still needs to be seen by a ferrier for maint
work. If anyone remembers the ferrier visit from
the first day, I'm sure none of us want to
envision MS having a ferrier visit ever :-)
8/11/07 As you all know MarySue, the MD FOBs very first
rescue, will be leaving for her forever home with
Ted and Amby next week and I am so happy and
excited for her. She was a trooper for her vet
exam and only rolled her eyes a couple of times at
the liberties being taken with her royal self.
She passed her health exam with flying colors and
even the vet has been impressed with her progress
from the scraggly little girl who first arrived in
New Windsor. Check out her early photos on the
WIKI page and then take a look at her now. What a
beautfiul girl she is.
8/20/07: From Amby
Well for any of you that ever hoped you would be
the first to see Mary Sue run in a blaze of glory.
You missed it yesterday. It was an upsetting event
for Ted and I but hopefully all will be well.
Ted had taken his sister up to see MS and he took
her out for some grass right outside the barnyard
area... The other horses came up behind her and
Chance tried to bite her on the behind (Im sure
all in fun) but it scared MS really bad and she
tried to pull away. Ted had not left himself
enough room to try and get her turned around ( you
have to see it all to understand it) Because the
lead rope got tangled up around her leg, Ted had
to let it go and MS ran down the lane in a total
blaze of glory. While it was a sight to behold,
what lied in store next was not the turnout you
would hope for. Ted called her and she stopped
right past the white house there where the other 2
horses were grazing. She got too close to their
fence and it well it's electric !!. Fortunately
the fence was made to break somewhat easily as she
went right thru the fence. She took out a huge
section of their fence line and cut her 2 front
legs in the process. She went right up to their
other horses and into one of their stalls around
back. Actually very calm the whole time...But we
could not tell how bad she had cut her legs....The
cuts were fairly small though and we cleaned them
and put meds on it right away and went and cleaned
them later in the day as well. She was a little
down last night when we went back out but the
people with the fence said it could take her a day
or so to "get back to normal" as they put it. Teds
family is gone now and thankfully we can go and
see her tomorrow !!!!
Anyhow that was our eventful day that wasnt
supposed to be all that eventful. Teds family was
nice enough to ride back out with us and spend 2
hours later yeserday as they knew we were
concerned about her.
8/21/07: Quick update on MarySue.....she had her pedicure
today and behaved, mostly, as the Princess that
she believes herself to be. She tried to pop up
twice but was clearly just testing to see what she
could get away with. After that she stood well to
have her trim and is now sporting her shapely new
tooties for Nugget to drool over.
MarySue has a few booboos from the fence episode
but is really just fine. At least she now knows
what an electric fence is and I'll bet she won't
tangle with one again.
8/30/07: MarySue is going to be leaving for her new home
within the next few days. I need to make definite
arrangements with the property owner but Ted is
anxious to get his girl closer so that he can
spoil her properly.
Right, 'cause she's not already spoiled. lol
9/1/07: The Princess loaded and traveled like an old pro.
She is settling in to her new digs and getting to
know her pasture mates. I know she is going to be
very happy there. It's a beautiful place.
Of course the barnyard looked very sad and empty
when I fed this evening. I am going to miss the
brat.
10/8/07: We finally were able to go see Mary Sue for the
first time since the accident. We ran over for a
few minutes this afternoon. It was good to see
her finally filled out (and seeing her in her
darker winter colors). I look forward to going
back out next weekend and giving her a bath (the
horse, not Amby – Amby gets one every night).
(posted from Ted)
11/19/07: Amby first post back on the boards since her
accident. Hi- I just read a few of the last
postings and it sounds like things are going
well. I pray that Bunny will make a full
recovery. I cant wait to get out to see some of
the new horses. I will read backwards a bit to
try and catch up. I did talk to Cathy about a
week ago though.
Well my family has all returned home and its
just ted and I as of today. I still have a long
way to go but am making good progress, day by
day. I have therapy 3 times a week at Kernan
Hospital and am trying to figure out when I can
return to work. I cant believe that it has been
3 months since the accident.
Mary Sue is doing well. She has a beautiful
winter coat and meaner than ever :-) They
introduced another horse into the mix and I
guess that Mary Sue decided to play "Who's In
Charge" for the first time since she has been
there. Needless to say I think she keeps them
on their toes. Thats my girl. Oh how I miss
her. Now that I can WALK a little, I hope to
see her SOON and actually be able to stand and
give her a hug.
You guys are doing such great work. Keep it
up !!!! WE miss you all Amby
1/06/08:From Amby MarySue finally got her first
turnout blanket for christmas and a brand new
red halter !! I really have to thank MS
secret santa for sending such a generous
donation towards her new blanket. MS is very
grateful and so are ted and I.
MarySue LOVES the blanket, she got to wear it
outside for the first time on New Years Day
Evening after dinner for the horses. Lauren
was there to help us get it all attached into
place. MS is looking around like the queen of
Ireland (thats where her blanket came
from)..We let her go into the paddock and ALL
3 of the other horses came running after her
and literally chasing her down to see this
blanket. MS got into a corner and pinned her
ears back and just dared them to come any
closer. I could hear her singing "Cant touch
this" all the while. Once they all found
their hay stacks they finally decided it was
more interesting than MS's blankie !!! Thank
Goodness. When we got there yesterday she was
still wearing it. It was muddy but not too
bad, I guess though it means she rolled in
it. We cleaned her really good before putting
it on and she also had been cleaned by Lauren
on Christmas Eve day because Lauren knew we
wanted some pics of her in it in her stall. I
found out that pics of her in a blanket in a
12x12 stall dont really turn out that well
though. Ted took some yesterday with my cell
phone as we had forgotten our camera and
Cathy is going to post them here as I dont
have a clue how to. The very first time Ted
and I put it on to see if it fit, MS is
looking around like what kind of getup do you
all have me in, but made NO fuss of getting
it on or off at all. I assume she has been
blanketed before.
Well I guess that MS was the envy of everyone
because when we arrived yesterday Merlin
(another boarded horse) had a new blankie on,
and Lauren had also bought one for Colley her
TB it was brand new. The only poor horse
without a blue blanket (or any blanket for
that matter) was Abbey the draft (aka cow or
elephant)..We figured that Abbey would have
already biten a hole in MS blanket by the
first time we made it back out this weekend
but all was in tact. As a matter of fact, we
were feeding MS carrots (whats new) and one
of the other horses came up and MS threw a
HUGE hissy fit and went after him big time.
She almost kicked him in the face, she then
proceeded to walk up to Merlin (the QH) and
bit into the tail on his blanket. Thank
Goodness no teeth prints or tear marks were
left...Gee and I was worried about MS...They
all laugh at me when I seem worried about
her...they just say..Man that woman can take
care of herself dont you worry !!!!
Well I hope that everyone is enjoying this
beautiful day, Ted is visiting MS and I was
just to tired to stand up for another 2hrs
this afternoon so I opted to stay home..I
have to work tomorrow and I'm not in a good
routine yet either...
