MARYLAND LADY
From AlexBrownRacing
Story:
I was also hoping to pull one from the KB to bring home with the paint colt. Well things started getting very busy with vetting and swapping and loading and unloading and I didn't see much of the auction. Christy was going to the kill pen to see what was there and check out a roan gelding that she had been told about. She called and said that he was a nice horse in good condition and the price was right so I said sure thing. That's at least one out of the kill pen. Well he is in good condition and incredibly sweet but he is a she. Funny how that mistake happens so often. So we ended up bringing home a lovely roan paint mare that really likes kids. She is such a doll and she and the colt bonded on their 6 hour ride.
Maryland Lady is a 10-12 year old mare and she is just a loving as Moonie. She is healthy and sound and is going to make a terrific riding horse. She really like children and is very well mannered. She will be evaluated and made available for adoption as soon as she completes quarantine.

UPDATES
7/10/07: Maryland Lady is the sweetest girl ever. I'm so
glad she wasn't a boy. She has some nasty broker
pen injuries, one in particular to her face that
looks like it came from a well placed shod hoof,
but they are not serious and should heal well.
The black you see on her butt is just rub marks
from the aluminum trailer that she rode to NH
in.
7/18/07: Maryland Lady (did I mention that I love this
mare) is truly a lady. She is so well behaved
when being handled. Lady is going to make
someone a very nice horse. If she can be ridden
by a beginner she already has a home. As soon as
I can have her evaluated we'll know for certain.
She does need to have her teeth floated and is a
bit off at times but hopefully that is not
anything serious. She needs to have her feet
done so that may clear up the problem. Lady has
adopted Moonie as her own and looks after him.
She even shares her food with him. Of course she
shares his food with her also.
7/20/07: Maryland Lady and Moonie (did I mention that I
love this mare) are settled in and enjoying the
routine. They are especially enjoying feeding
time. Lady's only problem is she has trouble
deciding which she wants more...to eat or be loved
on. She is so sweet. I have no doubt that she is
going to be a great beginner horse for the girl
that is interested in her. It will be a perfect
match and she will be going to a wonderful
home. Lady will need to be vetted and have her
teeth floated before she will be ready for
adoption but man am I going to miss this girl.
7/24/07: I have begun feeding Lady and Moonie hay today as
the pasture is basically dead. Please everyone
pray that we get rain soon or things are going to
get very ugly very early.
8/03/07: Maryland Lady is such a doll. As soon as she has
completed her quarantine she will be available for
adoption. And she is going to make someone very
happy indeed. Did I mention that I love this
mare?
8/11/07: Bather, Lady, and Margaret are all doing well
eating and waiting to learn their futures.
8/30/07: Lady is still well and as soon as she and Moonie
are out of quarantine we'll get her feet trimmed
and her teeth done and she will be good to go.
9/10/07: Maryland Lady and Moonie will be leaving
Walkersville at the end of this week for new
digs. Lady will be going to New Windsor. As
soon as we can get Lady trimmed and her teeth
floated she'll be ready for her new home.
9/14/07: I moved Maryland Lady and Moonie from the
Walkersville campus to New Windsor this morning
and they are getting to know the rest of the
herd. Lady had her teeth floated by Dr. Kabala
this morning and he estimated her
age to be closer to 20 rather than 10. Surprise,
surprise.
9/23/07: Lady is in Kingsdale for a few days until I am
ready to wean Mellie and take Lady and Marisol to
New Windsor. Aunt Mariah will take over the care
of Mellie and she will be just fine. Lady and
Marisol will be moving to the back pasture to
take over Auntie duties when Mattie
is weaned.
9/27/07: I turned Lady and Marisol out into the front
pasture at New Windsor and as soon as they were
together they took off for the creek, drank their
fill, and then settled down to grazing.
9/28/07: Well the farrier was out this morning and Coco
and Lady had their pedicures. They were both
ladies and behaved very well. More than I can
say for some.
9/30/07: Maryland Lady had her trim on Friday but she is
still lame so I'm thinking we are going to need
to check further to find the problem. I would
like to have x-rays done on her left front and
wanted to see how you guys feel about that. The
x-rays are $30 per view and I would think there
would be 2-3 views taken.
10/12/07: Bather, Marisol, and Lady have all been well
behaved since Tuesday's break-out. Of course
that could have something to do with the
recharged hot wire.
10/26/07: Lady is still a loner and does not hang with the
herd at all. I have a lady who is very
interested in adopting her if we can find out
what her lameness issue is and find a way to
manage it.
Dr. Mitchell will be out on Monday the 29th to
do preg checks on Lindy and Marisol, x-rays on
Lady, and remove stitches from Ebony.
10/29/07: Lady - really made us work for those x-rays and
we should have the results tomorrow.
10/30/07: Maryland Lady has advanced high ringbone and
will remain lame until the joint fuses. After
fusing she should be OK and may even be ridable
for a light weight person. Since she has
ringbone on the left side there is a good chance
that she already has or will develop ringbone on
the right. For now she will remain a pasture
puff and babysitter. We have another pretty
ornament for the field and she will be great for
teaching newbies about grooming and general
horse care.
This is sad news for Lady but we will keep her
as comfortable as possible until the joint fuses
and then see where we stand. And you know I
have already begun researching ringbone to see
what I can find out.
11/27/07: Maryland Lady is doing well and is not spending
so much time alone now. Bather, Marisol, and
Lindy take turns keeping her company while
Carmen is on the near side of the creek.
12/17/07: Maryland Lady has been adopted and will be
going home for Christmas! I just can't tell
you how happy I am about this adoption. I
don't usually post about an adoption until the
horse has actually gone home and everything is
completed but I just couldn't wait. Lady is
being adopted by Alyssa and the two of them
have just clicked together. They are so cute
taking care of each other and I know that Lady
is going to be spoiled and pampered for the
rest of her days by her own little girl. What
better Christmas gift could there be? And to
think that this sweet mare was slaughter bound
hurts my heart. She was pulled just in the
nick of time by the FOBs and she and I are
forever grateful to all of you.
12/22/07:I am so happy for Maryland Lady and I wish I
could have been there when Alyssa came home
today. She did not know that Lady was coming
(it is her early Christmas gift from her Mom)
and will find her in the barn when she gets
home. Her uncle told me that she has been
staring at Lady's picture online for the past
2 months and dreaming of having her for
herself.
Lady and Alyssa just clicked the first time
they met and it was love at first hug for
both of them. Shannon has promised that she
will take lots of pictures and send them over
for us. I can't wait.
