MARISOL & MELLEN
Story:
Marisol and Mary Ellen (aka Mellen) came to us from one of the New Holland brokers. Marisol is approximately 7 years old and is quite thin. Mellen is approximately one month old and full of baby attitude. We are working on helping Marisol gain weight and as soon as these girls complete quarantine they will be available for adoption. Both are sweet girls, even with the baby tude, and will be evaluated in a couple of weeks.

UPDATES
7/16/07: Mellen is one sick little girl and running a fever
of 104.8 today. She's on lots of meds and should
be fine but this is nasty, nasty stuff. Dr. Kabala
did say that she most likely had some immunity from
her mom and that mom was probably shedding the
bacteria, even though she didn't have the abcesses,
and that is why it took so long to show up. Dr.
Kabala was very impressed with Mellie and Marisol
and said that once they are back into decent
condition they will both be very nice horses.
7/18/07: Mellie is "looking" better but she still clearly
isn't feeling much better. She needs to have her
meds 3 times per day (that one keeps me running)
and she cannot be out in the sun while she is on
the meds. I am going to take a panel and gate from
MarySue's pen and use it to enclose a small shed at
Carl's. At least that way Mellie and Mom can get
some fresh air and see the other horses without
being out in the sun.
7/19/07: Mellie is feeling so much better. She is perkier
and beginning to fight her meds so she is
definitely getting better.
7/20/07: Mellie is clearly feeling better and she and Carl
are bonding during meds time. He can get her to
stand and take her meds with no problem. She and
Marisol are not pleased about being kept in all day
but they will survive.
7/23/07: You will all be pleased to know that Mellie is
feeling MUCH better today. The abcess under her
jaw has burst and she is feeling her oats. The
springs are back in her butt and those back feet
are deadly. She nailed Carl yesterday and she got
me this morning. This little girl has some serious
lessons in manners coming as soon as she is
completely well. I can't wait.
7/24/07: Mellie is clearly feeling better and she allowed
me to scratch her today without trying to take my
head off. Marisol is beginning to believe that
people are really OK. She has actually begun to
present herself for rubbing and....oh yeah is there
a treat in your pocket? Susan always has treats
for me. Where are my treats?
8/03/07: Marisol and Mellie are doing well and becoming
much more friendly. Mellie is over her bout with
strangles and is just a happy healthy baby again.
Marisol is really having a hard time maintaining
her weight while nursing the little piglet. We
keep increasing her feed and she is getting alfalfa
but I'm going to have to look at adding something
else to get her weight back up where it belongs.
Mellie is not due to be weaned until October but we
may have to seriously consider weaning her a little
earlier if Mom doesn't start gaining again.
8/11/07: Mellie is feeling so much better and acting like
the baby she is doing lots of bouncing around and
annoying the adults in the field. Gotta' love
babies.
Marisol is still not gaining weight so I may be
weaning Mellie a little early. She is getting a
huge amount of feed per day and I'm afraid to
raise it much more. Mellie is in great condition
so early weaning will not do her any harm. The
jury is still out on this one.
8/30/07: Marisol will also be coming to New Windsor as it
is time to wean Mellie. I'm sure that Mellie would
NOT agree with that decision.
9/10/07: Mags, Bather, Mariah, Marisol and Mellie are all
OK and will be playing musical horses soon as
well. Mags will be going home with Carolyn, and
Bather will be coming to New Windsor with Marisol.
9/15/07: Mags, Bather, Mariah, Marisol and Mellie are all
doing well. I will be moving Bather and Marisol to
New Windsor when Mags goes home and weaning Mellie
in the process. She's not going to like that but
she is also quite attached to Mariah so should be
fine.
9/23/07: Lady is in Kingsdale for a few days until I am
ready to wean Mellie and take Lady and Marisol to
New Windsor. Aunt Mariah will take over the care of
Mellie and she will be just fine. Lady and Marisol
will be moving to the back pasture to take over
Auntie duties when Mattie is weaned. Has anyone
else noticed that Marisol has quite a tummy on
her? I'm beginning to think that we need to have
her pregnancy checked when we have Lindy
checked. I hope that she is not pregnant but that
tummy is really growing.
9/27/07: Well just call me the "meany". Mellie was
officially weaned today and she is in her stall and
crying for her momma. Always makes me feel like
the bad guy. Carl is pampering her and spending
some time with her and then she'll be turned out
tomorrow morning with Mariah. They get along well
so all should be fine.
I turned Lady and Marisol out into the front
pasture at New Windsor and as soon as they were
together they took off for the creek, drank their
fill, and then settled down to grazing. I think
Marisol was actually relieved to be free of momma
duties.
9/30/07: Mariah and Mellie are doing very well. Mariah
has moved right into the Auntie roll and she and
Mellie do everything together. They now have a
pasture mate in May an older paint mare that will
be staying with them.
10/12/07: Bather, Marisol, and Lady have all been well
behaved since Tuesday's break-out. Of course that
could have something to do with the recharged hot
wire.

10/26/07: Marisol is doing well and enjoying NOT being a
mom. She is gaining weight and spending time
with lead momma mare. I suspect that she and
Carmen will discuss who will be lead mare when
Ebony moves to the back.
Dr. Mitchell will be out on Monday the 29th to do
preg checks on Lindy and Marisol, x-rays on Lady,
and remove stitches from Ebony.
Mellie and Mariah are both doing well. Mellie
would like to tell me where to stick that nasty
tasting wormer but she is eating well and
growing. Little Miss still has major attitude
that we will be adjusting shortly.
10/29/07: Marisol - Not pregnant, perfectly healthy and
ready for adoption.
11/27/07: Marisol is gaining weight nicely, and Mellie
and Mae ( the boarder horse) are fine and
packing on the pounds for winter....like they
need them. Not!
12/17/07: Marisol, Carmen, Omelet, Mellie, and Mariah
are all doing well and enjoying the cold
weather. With Bather and Lady leaving I have
decided to bring Mariah and Mellie home so
that everyone will be closer. Kingsdale is a
great barn but it is really a problem to get
there when the roads are nasty. I have spoken
with Amy and she understands and has offered
the barn for our use in the future anytime we
need it.
12/30/07: For the silly note of the day I electrified
some of the rope fencing outside of the
paddocks to give the babies more room to run
and play. Nugget only had to hit it once to
know that it was on and he could not escape
anymore. Mellie took 2 zaps to learn and
bless her dense little heart Felicia had to
hit all 3 rows before she got the message
that the fence bites. I do love those
drafties.
01/03/08: Marisol is also rounding out nicely and
becoming more lovely everyday. I must tell
you Rose that she has become a "brown horse"
now. I never saw anyone who likes to roll in
the mud as much as Marisol.
Omelet, Felicia, and Mellie are all growing
like weeds and just enjoying being kids.
Mellie has had a real attitude adjustment
since moving here with Felicia and Nugget.
She still puts her ears back all the time but
she is much more interested in being touched
and played with than before.
STATUS
