MARIAH

Arriving Home 6/18/07
Story:
Mariah is a late teen girl who is just a very large pocket pony. She is very sweet and loves, loves, loves all of the attention that she can get. She is also quite thin and will be having her teeth worked on to remove some points and hooks. Mariah will also be available for adoption when she completes quarantine and should make a great beginner horse.

UPDATES
7/16/07: Mariah was quite the pill when getting checked out.
She fought us every step of the way and finally
had to be sedated. She does have melanomas in her
mouth and a few way up under her tail but none
around her vulva or anus. Nothing can be done
about those. Her teeth are horrendous and she did
get floated but he thinks she may have a bad tooth
in there as well. He is hoping that the filing
loosened it enough that it will just come out
otherwise he will be back in 3 months to pull the
tooth. He upped her feed to 12# of Southern
States Senior per day so that is going to be a bag
every two days. If anyone would like to
help out with feed I would greatly appreciate it.
He also said that she is older than dirt. Like
that's a surprise.
7/18/07: Every muscle in my body aches from the battle we
had with Mariah on Monday. I'm getting to darned
old for this stuff. Mariah does not have a lot in
the way of teeth and she will continue on the
senior soup indefinitely. We need to get her
weight back up and that is going to take 12# of
senior feed per feeding. She's a big old girl but
such a sweetheart. Like most animals they know
when it is a child handling them and their
behavior is beyond reproach. If I lead her out I
have to be careful of my feet because she WILL
walk on them. Kylee led her out today and
she was a perfect lady. One of the reasons that I
always smile when the uninformed call them "dumb"
animals.
7/20/07: Mary Agnes, Bold Bather, and Mariah are all doing
well and enjoying the cooler weather. I'm with
them.
7/24/07: Mariah, bless her sloppy little heart, has to be
the sloppiest eater I have ever met. She can turn
a totally innocent bowl of Senior soup into a
slobbery, mucky mess in 2 minutes flat. But she
is enjoying her 3 meals a day and will hopefully
begin to pick up weight soon.
8/03/07: Mariah is doing very well and is such an in your
pocket girl. A friend of Carl's had not seen her
for a month and he was amazed at how much weight
she has gained. We see her everyday and don't see
the changes as easily but if you compare photos you
can see the improvement. As soon as I can get some
good current shots of her I will list her as
available for adoption. Way to go Mariah !
8/14/07 We arrived back home at 3 this morning and finally
made it to bed by 4. Not long after I received a
call from Carl stating that ALL of the horses were
out! He was able to round up Bather, Mags,
Marisel, and Mellie but could not find Mariah.
After I dropped Tee's horse at the back pasture and
unhooked the trailer I went to Kingsdale to help
look for Mariah. Carl had already been searching
for almost 3 hours with no luck. As I was walking
back the pasture to the rear I thought I hear a
very faint neigh coming from much farther back than
Carl's property. We continued searching and then
split up to cover more area. I was trying to head
in the general direction of the sound that I
thought I heard and was thrilled when I saw her
standing down in a valley/gulley type area. That
elation was short lived as it was quickly evident
that Mariah was injured. Seriously injured. Carl
led her back to the barn which was quite a hike in
her condition. She was trying very hard to not put
ANY weight on her right hind.
It appears that something spooked the horses last
night and they broke down a large section of wood
and wire fencing. Mariah apparently got the
electric wire caught around her ankle and has a
deep laceration on her pastern. The vet cleaned
her injury and bandaged it. We will need to change
her bandages daily and she is on two antibiotics to
try to ward off infection. This is potentially a
grave situation for Mariah. If the tendon sheath
was cut and infection enters the sheath it can then
travel throughout her system. We are monitoring
her temp and condition and should know within 3-4
days if infection has entered the sheath. Please
everyone say a prayer for the old girl that she can
recover from this injury.
On a brighter note it was the new vet, Dr.
Mitchell, who came out today. She is a May 2007
graduate of New Bolton and was there while Barbaro
was being treated. She spoke of her experiences
and the amazing public support that he received
while he was there. I'm going to believe that this
is a good omen for Mariah. Dr. Mitchell is also
going to try to join us for the benefit this
Saturday.
8/15/07 5:19 pm Mariah is definitely feeling better today
than she was yesterday. She's had time to re- hydrate and the pain meds seem to be helping. Her
leg is quite swollen today and she still does not
want to place any weight on it. Her left leg
muscles are pretty shaky from supporting all of her
hind end weight on one side. That concerns me.
I'll be able to get a good look at her injury when
I change her bandages this evening and I'll update
if there is anything notable.
I'll be heading back to Kingsdale shortly to do
bandage changes and I have no reception on my cell
so if you need to call please leave a message and
I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Please keep the old girl in your prayers.
8/16/07 1:00am Mariah seems to be feeling much better than
yesterday and is moving around more. She is still
not weighting the injured leg but her appetite is,
as always, terrific and she drank approximately 25
gallons of water since yesterday afternoon. The
water helped as much as anything else because she
was so dehydrated when we brought her in. She has
had no elevated temp all day and that is a major
concern right now. If there is infection and it
spreads the first sign would be the temp rising. I
changed her bandage today and there was not much
change in the damaged area. It looks nasty but no
heat or other signs of infection. Yeah!
Tonight after I stuck her with those HUGE
antibiotic shots she just laid her head on my chest
as if to say "damn woman that hurt!". I do feel
bad for the old girl but she's tough and I am
feeling better today about her chances of healing
and recovery. She's had some hard times and this
girl is a fighter. Please keep the prayers coming.
Well I am cautiously optimistic that Mariah is
going to recover from this injury. She still does
not want to weight the injured foot but there is no
sign of infection, her temp is still down, and she
REALLY wants out of that stall. All good signs and
making me smile. Today she is sporting a green
wrap with blue polka dots so she is a fashion
minded girl.
I was not able to speak with anyone in the office
at the vets today so I still don't have an estimate
on charges. Sorry. I don't think that it is going
to be too bad if Mariah continues to do as well as
she has.
Please keep the prayers going for Mariah as they
are clearly working
8/18/07: Mariah is doing OK. She still has no fever and we
get to stop the shots on Monday and switch her
over to SMZs. Thank goodness. I thought Susan
was going to have a fit when she saw the size of
the shots the poor old girl has to have. Trust me
Mariah is not too happy with them either. lol
I am concerned that Mariah has developed some
swelling in her left hind leg, the one that is not
injured, and that she is continuing to bear all of
her weight on that side. Hopefully she will feel
well enough to begin bearing weight on the injured
leg soon. I'll keep everyone updated as we
progress with her healing. Thank you for keeping
her in your prayers.
8/20/07 As long as she continues to improve the additional
charges should be minimal. Dr. Mitchell is coming
out for a re-check on Wednesday and if all is well
I should have a better idea of the total charges
at that time. Right now we are looking at another
farm call charge ($40) plus a bottle of SMZs which
I had on hand. Still doing bandage changes every
day but should only need gauze wrap and telfa pads
for the next week or so. We're in pretty good
shape on the other items.
Mariah is doing well and is bearing more weight on
the injured foot each day. The swelling has gone
down in her good leg so that makes me feel a lot
better. Even though I stuck that poor girl at
least 4 times a day for the past week she is still
just as sweet as can be and wants her loving when
you come to see her. You just have to love a
horse like Mariah.
8/21/07: Mariah is about the same as yesterday. She is
weighting the injured foot a little but not much.
Dr. Mitchell will be out to check her tomorrow at
9.
Mariah's injured foot was more swollen this
evening than it has been but she is still not
running a fever so I don't know what the deal is.
I'll have lots of questions for Dr. Mitchell
tomorrow morning.
8/21/07 Hey Guys the news is good. Mariah is healing well
and is weighting the injured foot more and more
each day. She will be on SMZs for two weeks and
daily bandaging for two weeks and then, if she is
healed well enough, we'll be able to stop the
bandaging and antibiotics. The prayers are
working and I thank you all.
I had to get a bottle of SMZs at $100 and today's
visit plus one more for final check should be a
total of $180 in addition to the $256 already
incurred. This should make the total $436 when
all is said and done.
Thanks again to everyone for your continued
support of this sweet old girl.
8/25/07: She gets walked each day while we are doing bandage
changes and hosing. Not a lot but some.
8/30/07: Everyone is doing well today. I took Mariah's
bandages off today and hosed her off good then
decided not to rebandage her. The wound looks good
and has closed all of the way across so I think
we're good to go. She is walking much better and
only appears a little stiff on that leg now. Still
a little healing to do but things are looking
well. Dr. Mitchell will be coming to the
farm on the 6th and I'll have her check just to be
sure.
9/14/07: Mags, Bather, Mariah, Marisol and Mellie are all
doing well. I will be moving Bather and Marisol to
New Windsor when Mags goes home and weaning Mellie
in the process. She's not going to like that but
she is also quite attached to Mariah so should be
fine.
9/23/07: Lady is in Kingsdale for a few days until I am
ready to wean Mellie and take Lady and Marisol to
New Windsor. Aunt Mariah will take over the care of
Mellie and she will be just fine.
9/25/07: Mariah is doing fairly well but I don't believe
that she will ever be sound on that leg again. She
has good days and bad but she is getting around
well and she's in with horses now that don't pick
on her. That will make her life much
easier.
9/27/07: Well just call me the "meany". Mellie was
officially weaned today and she is in her stall and
crying for her momma. Always makes me feel like
the bad guy. Carl is pampering her and spending
some time with her and then she'll be turned out
tomorrow morning with Mariah. They get along well
so all should be fine.
9/30/07: Mariah and Mellie are doing very well. Mariah
has moved right into the Auntie roll and she and
Mellie do everything together. They now have a
pasture mate in May an older paint mare that will
be staying with them.
10/12/07: Mariah and Mellie are doing very well. Mariah has
moved right into the Auntie roll and she and Mellie
do everything together. They now have a pasture
mate in May an older paint mare that will be
staying with them
10/26/07: Mariah's injury has healed but I don't believe
that she is ever going to be sound on that leg.
Looks like she will spend her days as a pasture
puff and foal sitter from now on.
11/21/07: Thought you guys should know Mariah was down
today for about 4 hours. She was on the
ground, did not appear to be in distress but
could not seem to get back to her feet. She
would raise up and put her front legs out like
she wanted to rise but couldn't seem to get her
back end going. Dr. Mitchell came out and
checked her over. CRT was fine, heart rate
fine, respiration fine, gut sounds were good,
not dehydrated, neurological signs all good,
but Mariah seemed to be completely out of it.
After Dr. Mitchell had been there for about 1/2
hour Mariah finally made it to her feet and she
was given a shot of Banamine just in case it
was a colic episode. The goofy old thing
seemed to be fine and wanted to go eat with
Mellie.
That silly old nag scared the bejeebers out of
me but seems to be just dandy now. The brat!
11/23/07: We have pretty much come to the conclusion that
Mariah is just a sissy when it comes to pain.
She appears to be working on an abcess on her
left hind and she apparently did not want to
put any pressure on her tootsies to get herself
off of the ground. May still have been a
little colic but we don't know for sure. What
ever it was she recovered quickly, when she was
ready, and seemed to be fine. We're watching
her closely but at this point it's anyone's
guess.
11/27/07: Well Mariah is still hobbling around and
looking pitiful. She really is a Prima Donna
kind of girl. The least little hangnail and
she's down for the count. I still owe her one
for scaring me so badly.
12/04/07: And Carolyn I meant to tell you that Mariah
LOVES her blankie. Mellie thought that it was
a giant blue monster eating her Auntie Mariah
and did a perfect sliding stop the first time
she saw her in it. I'm afraid I did have to
laugh. A lot.
12/17/07: Marisol, Carmen, Omelet, Mellie, and Mariah
are all doing well and enjoying the cold
weather. With Bather and Lady leaving I have
decided to bring Mariah and Mellie home so
that everyone will be closer. Kingsdale is a
great barn but it is really a problem to get
there when the roads are nasty. I have spoken
with Amy and she understands and has offered
the barn for our use in the future anytime we
need it.
12/16/07: All of the kids are doing well and enjoyed
their Christmas goodies yesterday. Mariah
has settled in with the herd and they all
seem to be getting along well. She and
Bather are hanging out together and they come
in to eat together. Thank you for that one
Mariah. I could never catch Bather to bring
her in for feeding but she does come in with
Mariah who never misses an opportunity to
eat!
12/22/07: Mariah is still getting used to the New
Windsor pasture. I have not turned her out
with the other horses yet as I wanted them to
meet and greet while she was still somewhat
protected in the paddock. I will turn her
out tomorrow morning and we'll see how things
go. I am not expecting any problems but you
never know.
1/03/08: Mariah has settled into the little herd quite
well and she and Bather hang out together.
They pretty much ignore the rest of the
horses unless they are noshing at the hay
ring. They are the elder royalty in the
field.
1/09/08: Mariah is almost FAT! You can barely see her
ribs anymore and her topline is finally
beginning to fill in. It's been a long slow
process for her but she IS gaining. She's
doing very well in the pasture at the farm
and she and Bather tend to hang together.
1/15/08: Mariah did have a choke episode this morning
so she was getting plenty of attention too.
And Bather was posing in all her muddy
glory. No one would believe that those two
are de-mudded daily because they go right
back out and coat themselves as soon as I'm
finished. Goofy horses!
