Horse Auctions

Listed below are the various horse auctions that kill buyers, horse dealers and horse rescue organizations attend. Larger kill auctions will have kill buyers, smaller auctions will have dealers who will go from auction to auction to pick up enough horses fill a load for a contract or kill buyer, or to resell at larger auctions, usually at a profit. Rescues will attend both types of auctions. Kill buyers put a bottom on the market so often horses are cheaper at the smaller auctions where kill buyers are not in attendance.

Some auctions sell the horses by the pound, which is a clear indication that the main customer is the kill buyer. Other auctions sell horses by the head. Horses can be ridden through the sales ring usually under a western saddle or bareback, led in one at a time, or are herded in loose. Loose horses and lead-ins are generally cheaper and more vulnerable in terms of going to kill. Kill buyers need to satisfy their contracts with a slaughter house or with contract buyers and as such the prices they are willing to pay depend on the number of horses they need for that contract. Some kill buyers are willing to work with rescues, especially if there is an abundance of horses from which to select. Horses either then ship directly from the auction to the slaughterhouse or to the kill buyer's kill pen and then on to the slaughter house, or to a contract buyer's feedlot to await slaughter.
