Story:
UPDATES
11/15/07: We picked up Easter Bunny (a TB/Percheron
cross) and her foal Omelet from NE PA and
brought them home. Easter Bunny has a serious
injury on her left hock and she is being
treated aggressively for the infection. We
should know the results of the x-rays Monday so
that we'll know exactly what we are dealing
with. This is such a sweet and gentle mare.
She has tolerated a great deal of poking,
prodding, scrubbing, hosing, bandaging, etc.
for her injury and she never complains. Just
stands quietly until we are finished and then
waits for her loving. Her foal, Omelet, is
such a looker. He is a very well put together
little guy with unlimited potential. He is
currently available for adoption.
11/16/07: Dr. Kabala worked on Ms. E for about an hour
and what he told me has me cautiously
optimistic. He injected saline solution into
the wound around the joint and said that the
fact that the fluid came right back out was a
good thing. It means that, most likely, the
joint capsule has not been compromised. This
is of course just an optimistic observation on
his part until he has time to develop and read
the x-rays. There is still a lot of infection
in the wound and Ms. E will receive 2 shots of
Penicillin and one shot of Gentamicin every day
for 4 more days. That should knock out the
infection.
We will hopefully know tomorrow about whether
or not there is an actual fracture but even if
their is Dr. Kabala feels that she has a very
good chance for recovery. He wrapped the wound
and wants it to stay covered to keep it clean
until it closes.
Oh yeah, he really liked the Egg who was trying
to nibble his ear while he was working on mom.
Ornery little stinker.
The injury itself is an area about the size of
a silver dollar right on the tip of the hock.
The skin is gone but it does not appear to be a
puncture type of wound. It's more like the
skin was just sliced off.
The Egg is not having a tantrum yet as Dr.
Kabala did not recommend keeping Ms. E stalled
until we know about the x-rays. The only
reason then would be to help keep the wound
clean. Movement is actually good for her. For
now Ms. E and the Egg are confined to the
barnyard to they have plenty of room to move
around.
11/17/07: Just a quicky update on the Easters.
Omelet is such an incredible brat! He uses his
mom as a scratching post and the poor thing can
barely maintain her balance. Lucky for him he
is just too cute to stay angry with. lol
Bunny is very uncomfortable but she is the best
patient ever. She is so tolerant when I am
cleaning her wound, she tolerates the shots
without complaint, she's not too crazy about
the cold hosing but we manage to get that in
too. I wish the other horses were as well
behaved when they need to be treated.
I am determined to be optimistic about Bunny's
chances for recovery and any prayers that y'all
would like to send her way will be appreciated.
11/19/07: Quickie update on Bunny this morning. She is
not running a fever and only has one more day
of shots. Thank goodness. I think it hurts me
more than it hurts her. She was more animated
and eager for her breakfast this morning and
just seemed to be feeling better. She is
weighting her bad leg a little bit and that is
better. Yesterday she would not put any weight
on the leg at all and was holding it off of the
ground most of the time. Still no sign of
laminitis in the uninjured leg even though she
is bearing almost all of her weight on that
side.
Please keep the prayers coming for this sweet,
sweet girl.
I just received the results of Bunny's x-rays.
The good news is that nothing appears to be
broken. The bad news is that it is most likely
a tendon injury which will actually take much
longer to heal. This also means that Bunny will
need to be kept separated from the other horses
until she can maneuver much better than she
does now. I'm still thinking on that one
because she will need something similar to the
set-up that we had for MarySue but I need to be
able to allow the other horses to come into the
barnyard for access to the shed area. The cogs
are turning.
11/20/07: I just finished evening feeding and sticking
that poor mare for the last time. She has been
so very patient with all of the needles I have
had to stick her with. She stands like a
trooper to have her bandage changed and
Omelet "helps" me. Sheesh!
Bunny is weighting her injured leg just a bit
but still carrying most of her weight on her
uninjured leg. I am very concerned about the
good leg but trying to be optimistic. She is
laying down for a while at night but most of
the time she is up and that good leg is bearing
a lot of weight.
This weekend I am going to set up the paddock
that we had for MarySue and the Omelet will be
weaned. He is not going to be a happy boy but
it is time. Should be exciting.
11/21/07: Bunny is clearly feeling much better this
morning. She's so funny because she knows that
I give her treats everytime I come down to feed
or tend her booboo. So now she follows me
around everywhere and I can barely move for her
big old self being in my way. I don't hand
feed treats but she knows that I put them on
top of her feed and I guess she thinks that
just maybe, if she's a big enough pest, I'll
find one in my pocket for her. Too funny.
Omelet is just a total nuisance. He is so cute
and wants to "help" me with anything I'm
doing. Oh and if you scratch his hiney.....he
just melts. These two are a total hoot.
11/27/07: Bunny is weighting her leg more and more every
day. It is unbandaged now and is looking
really good. Omelet is a BRAT! He came at me
this morning with his ears back and trying to
take a chunk out of me. I know he's just
testing the waters but this little boy needs
some serious manners 101 training. That is
coming soon have no fear.
12/02/07: Well gang it was a busy day at the farm
today. I had to rethink some field
assignments to work around Bunny's, now known
as Tola's, injury. I did not want to put her
in the front pasture because Carmen would just
harass her non-stop but she needed to be out
where she can get exercise and keep that leg
moving. Que in new field assignments.
Since Tola is injured and needs to be with
quiet horses who will not pick on her, and
Lindy is preggers and doesn't need the hassle
either (although she basically just ignored
Carmen), I have moved them both to the back
pasture with Ebony. This means that Jazz and
Chyna will have to stay out front for now but
it seemed the safest way to place everyone.
First I moved Tola and let me tell you that
was a barrel of fun. Moving Tola also meant
that it was weaning day for Omelet and I had
two extremely unhappy horses on my hands. I
thought Tola was going to come through the
side of the trailer trying to get back out to
Omelet and he was being a total nut case in
the barnyard. He did everything but climb
through the fencing to get back to mommy. It
is a mile from the front pasture to the back
of the farm and I can only hope that they
cannot hear each other over that distance.
Introducing Tola and Ebony went quite smoothly
and there was really no excitement in that
arena. Ebony was just following her around
trying to decide if she liked her or not and
Tola was staring off into the neighbors field
trying to determine if that was her baby over
there.
Lindy was no problem as usual and loaded right
up, went back to the back pasture, and took up
her friendship with Ebony where it left off.
She is such a sweet and gentle girl.
I have Omelet in the stall for the night and
Maryland Lady in the pen just outside so that
they can get to know each other. I'm hoping
that Lady will take over Auntie duties and
help ease the loss of his mom.
She was better by feeding time this evening
and had stopped looking for the little
twerp.
12/3/07: Oh don't feel bad for the Omelet. He's too
much a brat to feel bad for him. I did so
enjoy seeing him learn some manners this
morning. I turned him out with Lady in the
front pasture (until I am ready to bring him
home for Kiddie Kindergarten) and he
immediately had 4 previous mommas letting him
know that they were not going to put up with
his antics. Tola never taught this boy any
manners and he is in sore need of a few
lessons. Don't worry, Jazz is not letting
them pick on the twit too much but he also
will only let him get away with so much.
Gotta' love horsie herd rules.
She is a beautiful girl and has put back on
some of her weight. I'm hoping that without
the Omelet nursing every 10 minutes she will
be able to gain her weight back a little
easier.
12/04/07: Tola and Omelet are both settling in well and
adjusting to being separated. Omelet is
hanging with Lady and Tola seems to have
stopped searching the neighboring fields for
the brat.
Not to worry about Tola and Omelet. Tola is
still adjusting but Omelet is completely happy
to have Maryland Lady take over as Auntie. I
so wish I had my camera when I was there a bit
ago as they were laying down together to take
a little nap. Too cute. In 6 months or so it
might be safe to put them back together but if
they are anything like Jazz and Ebony they
will bond right back again and then have to go
through the separation all over.
I'm also going to blanket Tola since she is
still in need of quite a bit of weight. I
just hate to see the thin ones stand out in
the weather when it's nasty and lord knows
they don't have enough sense to come in out of
the rain.........or in this case snow.
12/17/07: Tola is doing very well. She is moving much
better and has adjusted to not having the
Omelet nursing every 10 minutes. Her wound
has completely healed and I have great hopes
that she will be sound again in 2008. She and
Ebony have become fast friends and all three
of the big girls are getting along very well.
Marisol, Carmen, Omelet, Mellie, and Mariah
are all doing well and enjoying the cold
weather. I hope to play musical horses by the
end of this week and, once again, get everyone
settled. The babies (Mellie, Omelet, and
Felicia) will all be home with me and Hope
which will be good for Hope because she loves
the babies.
12/22/07: I have everyone moved now except for Omelet
and I want to have a couple of people on hand
when I do move him. I am not expecting any
problems but in case he decides to be
obstinate I just want to be ready.
1/03/08: Tola is gaining weight nicely and beginning
to round out like the big girl that she is.
She still has a limp but the wound is
completely healed over and now we just need
to wait for the ligaments to heal. Hopefully
by the end of 2008 she will be sound again
and ready for her new home.
Omelet, Felicia, and Mellie are all growing
like weeds and just enjoying being kids.
Omelet has learned a few manners since being
out with the herd and he is becoming quite
the little gentleman. His momma didn't do
him any favors by not teaching him manners
but he has greatly improved.
