Horse experience
I've been riding most of my life. My earliest memory is falling off my sister's Arab-Quarter Horse when I was three and landing in the compost pile. While growing up in Virginia I worked at a stable, took lessons, did 4-H and Pony Club, showed hunters and did some eventing and foxhunting. I rode horses for other people and had a little Arab gelding who loved to jump and would automatically head for the nearest fence whether asked to or not.
I went a few years without getting to be around horses much when I went away to college and moved to Arizona. But I realized that my life just isn't complete without horses. I currently own a OTTB named Ollie that I do some hunter/jumping with and an occaisional rodeo parade and pole bending, but mostly trail ride. Ollie's an affectionate clown known for untying shoelaces and snatching baseball caps off your head. If he likes you, he'll give you a hug by throwing his head and neck over your shoulder and pulling you into his chest or by grooming the back of your neck. In April 2008, while looking for a horse trailer on Craig's List, I stumbled onto listings for Ollie's mom, (Say Cheese Please, AKA "Cheese") and sister (Thisonesastar, AKA "Star"). They were described with their bloodlines which made me click on the links since I knew they were related to my horse. Otherwise, if they'd been described as "TB mares," I would never have paused since I was NOT looking for two horses! So despite the unwise financial decision, I convinced my husband it was "meant to be." The three horses are now a happy little equine family that are hopelessly herd-bound, but learning new careers as trail horses for the girls and patient trainer, babysitter, confidence-builder for Ollie.
FOB activities
Part of of the AZ FOBs. With the help of my husband Bill, we've been producing "I Get It" and FOB embroidered shirts, sweatshirts, hats and imprinted mugs. For each item purchased, the purchaser gets to designate what equine charity receives the proceeds of five dollars per item. The site is http://www.companycasuals.com/wegetit. As of early 2008, we've raised over $800 for 17 different organizations including New Bolton Center Laminits Fund, Old Friends, the Exceller Fund, the TB Times ad campaign, and 13 different horse rescues.
