    Barbaro Updates: 1006

    updates are now here.

Update 6157: It was a fun afternoon at the races at Delaware Park yesterday, and there were also plenty of FOBs in attendance to watch Lentenor run in the Kent Stakes. Unfortunately Lentenor did not win, but fun nonetheless. Here is a picture of the winning jockey and his wife. Ramon also won on Nicanor the day before, and he used to own Delaware Park when he rode there full-time.

The Pennsylvania Derby was won by Morning Line: Morning Line takes the Pennsylvania Derby in a thrilling finish. The Super Derby was won by Apart: Apart wins the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.

Great story about Courageous Commet, who is competing at the World Equestrian Games: Riddle: Comet a star among ex-racehorses.

And finally, here is a new (old) picture of Barbaro!

Update 6156: A great wire-to-wire win yesterday for Nicanor at Belmont Park. He was the second longest shot going into the race, but Ramon Dominguez just stole the race on the front end. It was an inspired ride, and great to see Nicanor return to the winner's circle. Today his younger brother, Lentenor, will be in action in the Kent Stakes at Delaware Park.

Philadephia Park, or whatever it is now called, hosts its Derby today, and we also have the Louisiana Super Derby, so plenty of action at the top of the weak 3yo division: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by WEST POINT THOROUGHBREDS.

Update 6155: I saw Michael Matz this morning, in Prizzio's. He was on his way up to New York to saddle Nicanor later this afternoon: Nicanor and Lentenor Racing This Friday and Saturday.

I asked Michael a question for my book.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6154: Well I have now retired from riding horses, again. Lets see how long it lasts this time. But I need to focus all my energies, over the next week, on my Barbaro book. Then for a lot of the month of October I plan to travel, which will conclude at the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs in early November. I will still provide mostly daily updates on this site, but in case I skip a day or two along the way, you know why!

    And please keep calling.

Update 6153: Four ridden this morning at Fair Hill, and that's it, I am done riding out in the mornings for a while at least. Time now to really focus on finishing up my book and doing a little travel.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6152: Four ridden this morning at Fair Hill, and it was only 48 degrees when I arrived. It felt cold! My second horse, coming home, was obviously feeling the weather. Aside from that, all my horses went nicely.

Here is this week's ABR Facebook Group message: Court Vision, The Usual Q T, Redwood, Fifty Proof, Jake Chalfin, Judge Beautiful, Pop Star, Lizzie Snow, Mrs. Jackson.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6151: Three ridden this morning for an easy start to the day. All three of mine went nicely.

Yesterday afternoon I went over to a Three Day Event, near Unionville. The CIC 2 Star contest was won by Pop Star and Lizzie Snow. Pop Star is a thoroughbred, who has obvously found a better second career. It was nice to see CANTER there presenting an award for the highest placed thoroughbred. Then it was bareback puissance time. This is crazy, and another x racehorse who has found a better career!

    And please keep calling.

Update 6150: A day off for me today. Not sure yet exactly what my plan is. Course if I was up in Canada this year it would be to attend their biggest day of racing with the Northern Dancer (Marsh Side Defends Northern Dancer Turf Crown) and the Woodbine Mile (Diverse Field Drawn for Woodbine Mile). Should be a fun afternoon up there!

Nice to see this winning debut yesterday: Goldikova's Half-Sister Makes Winning Debut.

Update 6149: Four ridden this morning at Fair Hill, and it was a chilly start to the day. All four of mine went nicely for a straightforward morning. One galloped out of the gate, and came out fast and straight!

Not much in terms of top class racing in the US this weekend, but the focus is on Woodbine, and their major races today and tomorrow: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by WEST POINT THOROUGHBREDS.

Update 6148: Another three ridden this morning at Fair Hill. After some rain came through last night, a very pleasant day for riding horses. All mine went nicely. After I was finished I went to a friend's house to ride some more horses. Here I am, schooling a horse who will be competing in a puissance event this weekend. If I can get her over a fence, she will be in great shape with a real rider on her back!

    And please keep calling.

Update 6147: Another three ridden this morning at Fair Hill. A very straightforward start to the day. As is my routine, I went to Prizzio's afterwards to catch up with the Daily Racing Form.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6146: Three ridden this morning at Fair Hill. A short morning for me, but I nearly ran into a fox! Thankfully all my horses went nicely.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6145: Another four ridden this morning at Fair Hill, and another gorgeous morning for riding horses. All mine went nicely, which included a little gate schooling on a two-year-old filly.

Here is this week's ABR Facebook Group message: Delaware Park, CANTER, Dr. Meredith, Kelso, Northern Dancer, Secret Gypsy, Jane Simone, DVD Fundraiser, Barbaro in a hand ride.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6144: Four ridden this Monday morning at Fair Hill. A very straightforward start to the day. It was nice weather for riding, and all my horses went nicely.

Steve Haskin takes us down memory lane with Big Red, as we wait for the Secretariat movie to come out: The Real Secretariat.

    And please keep calling.

    Morning Everyone....

OMGOSH...Alex! Thank You for this NEW page:) Dial-Up and 468 posts....a person needs coffee and sandwiches for that many posts to finish downloading :/ A new page takes so little time:)

Monday morning....and I've nothing to 'write home about' the weekend was quiet, no excitement.

The Memorial Service for my neighbor was lovely! So many people sang praises of him...so many people attended...lots of funny stories and lots of stories about the help he was always so willing to give if his knowledge of electrical problems/fixes, or pretty much anything a person might need in the way of home repairs or extra hands in the helping department:)

    Morning all ,
I haven't read Haskin' Secretariat article yet but I will after emailing the Pres. next ...

Lynne , I know the memorial was touching for a well loved neighbor. I hope it helps you with closure as it is meant to do , but sometimes that's not so easy, is it... there's such a feeling of mortality that engulfs us when , for the first time , friends of our own age start dying... I know you will miss him but at least you knew him. Some people live their entire lives without any closeness to neighbors.

Well , where is everybody ?
Labor Day has come and gone ,
check in you peeps , please , and let us know you are there , working for the horses ...
    Bye now ,

    Lynne,
I'm here...the caffine has not kicked in yet.

Prayers for Dear Scout and Harriett. I hope Scout feels better real soon.

Yesterday I read that Lost Soldier, sire to a much beloved LOST IN THE FOG past away. Now LITF and his Dad can run together. So sad.

This morning, it's downright chilly here in San Jose. I'm sure it will warm up to 70 or 80 later today.

Lynne, please take care of your wonderful critters, I love the deer and the squirrels.

Have a good day all ((((HUGS TO BARBARO'S FABULOUS FAMILY))).

OMGOSH!! I'M SO 'EXCITLED' FOR JOE THIS MORNING...HE'S GOT A NEW *GOOGIE* HER NAME IS *MAXINE* and they call her *MAXI*!!

Debbie LA??? I'll post what he's written here for yole to read...but if Debbie doesn't do it later today...I'll post a blue-ink-link...'cause she's so CUTE:)

God Bless Joe and Cathy and Pony Boy and now...*MAXI*, too! I betcha *JULES* sent this girl along to his Daddy:)

Monday, September 13th... It must be Monday. So far I have jammed my thumb on a stall gate. Hit my head on a cupboard. Dropped a cup of coffee. And for whatever reason, other than it must be Monday, it took forever to load pictures below.

You can clean 3 stalls. Watch an episode of Malcolm In The Middle. Read the sports section. Drive to Lake Tahoe for a delicious fish taco at Freshies. And still a picture is loading.

I am late for work. But I wanted to tell you about our new dog. She came from Sacramento Shelter with the name Maxine. A pit mix, Maxine is 8 or so. We are calling her Maxi. She is missing her left hind leg. Maxi is clingy. Right now she lays at my feet, wondering why is this old guy cussing his computer. There are certainly bigger issues in life than a slow loading photo.

Maxine is shown below. As you can see in the last two pictures, it only took Maxine a few hours to learn our routine. Helping with supper feeding.

There is a lady on Facebook named Cynthia, who helps place unwanted dogs into new homes. This is where I first saw Maxine. Cynthia does amazing work.

It only takes one person. No morning website. No boring you with flies starting their engines. Nikki in Vacaville saves the lives of 3 or 4 race horses a year. Jeri in Vacaville saving unwanted cats. Amber in Vacaville does the same with lizards. There is Jodi in Dixon. Tisha in Sacramento. Melissa in Loomis. Julia in Lincoln.

There is a teen girl in Grass Valley, and all by herself she has saved the lives of 3 race horses.

A lady in Pleasanton, helping injured rodeo horses.

A husband and wife in Napa, helping unwanted parrots.

And there is Cynthia on Facebook, helping dogs find new families.

On this it must be Monday, we give Thanks to those who help animals. With all that is going on in this crazy world. Pretty cool when you think about it. Making time for those who need help.

Yipppeeeeeee-Skipppppyyyyyy! Our Debbie LA is HERE:) Deb!! I was worried about you! I'm so glad to see you:)

Bobbie: Yes...you're right! At least I knew him! Such a nice man. Cruising the hood...on his Quad with his dog, *BUDDY*...and in the wintertime, he wore a silly hat with 'Elmer Fudd' earflaps! I already miss hearing the Quad coming and seeing he and Buddy out for their morning or afternoon 'adventure' together! I miss hearing it in the early mornings from across the canyon...Buddy barking/barking/barking his EXCITEMENT as they rode up the hill off to feed the chickens and cows and peruse the hood...I heard Buddy's excited barking one morning last week, as their daughter loaded Buddy and Skipper (her dog) onto the Quad...it just tickled me pink to be hearing Buddy's glee:) and then...LOL...I heard the daughter shouting....SKIPPER....NOOOOOO! COME HERE, SKIPPER!!!...LOL Skipper saw something and jumped off the QUAD....we laughed about that on Saturday at the service for her dad...I told her he'd NEVER have done such a thing if GRANDPA had been driving!! :)

I worry about Buddy...he's old now and he and his Dad were joined at the hip!

It's so sad when a person dies and their old loved companion pet is left. I hope the daughter can take up some slack with Buddy and help him along , poor boy ;(

Posted by: BobbieB. at September 13, 2010 5:21 PM

    ps Lynne ,
and maybe Skipper's company will help Buddy too, if he was barking - he was enjoying himself in the activity at least ;)

Rest in peace , Lost Soldier , and run with LITF as Carleen says you might. Run the meadows of hevvin.

Lynne, there is nothing to compare to the loyalty of old dogs. I had an uncle that after his wife died had a dog named Rex. Rex was old but in fairly good health. Rex and my uncle never left each others side. Rex even went to the Dairy Queen each afternoon for coffee with the men.
When my uncle died suddenly Rex stopped eating. Nothing worked not even ice cream. My cousin took Rex to his house and Rex wouldnt eat there.
One afternoon Rex was missing and he was found on his front porch at my uncles house. The vet said there wasnt any health reason even though he was an old dog. We think Rex died of a broken heart.
There is nothing like the love and loyalty of a beloved dog.

Posted by: sandra at September 13, 2010 8:28 PM

However, If I had gone before Chief he might have stopped eating unless he was offered a peanut butter cracker.

Hiya, FsOB! My thanks to Lynne B. for greeting the new day here this AM. I had to drive up to Boston for a day-long professional gathering and had to be on the road by 6:30 AM; that meant arising at 4:30! Egads, to quote Alex, I am truly knackered.

Alex, thanks for the pic of your Mum's new digs in Cornwall. That county is truly a magical place! Wishing everyone "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Sandra: Thansk for sharing the story of your late Uncle's dog, Rex. What a bitersweet story. I thought of your Chief over the weekend when I located a box of Nilla Wafers in the cupboard.
To Carleen: May Lost Soldier rest in peace. Thank you for reminding us of Lost in the Fog.
To Debbie LA: Isn't Joe's new dog Maxine adorable? ####

My two Boston's got in a fight over a toy on Sunday morning, Bam Bam the smaller one, his eye led was badly ripped, and I was off to the hospital at 10 AM, Not my regular vet! He had to be put under to have stitches in place. The vet I went to did not have the collar/cone to keep him from scratching his eye. I tried to sleep with his feet in my hands all night. Very little sleep! This morning he was in so much pain from the eye, he was just shaking. I was at my regular vet at 7 AM, the stitches had scratch his corner. He had to under go another surgery to have his eye cleaned up and stitches place on the out side of the eye. The little guy has been a sleep all day, I can seem to get him to wake up, to drink or eat. So worried about him, he woke up yesterday in about three hours, but today, I feel something is wrong! So if you could say a small prayer for this 15 LB black and white guy. Maybe it could help him and me too.
I am only asking the FOB's, for only you understand.

Hiya, FsOB! I am running late, but wish that you could see the fog which rolled in about an hour ago. It wasn't here when I work up. It's as though Lost in the Fog has sent a greeting to Lost Soldier. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Debbie LA: Reaching out across the miles to you and your two Boston Terriers. I hope that both are more calm and alert today. Debbie, please keep us posted, we "get it". ####

##Debbie, thoughts and prayers going out to you and Bam Bam. Hoping he is awake and able to eat and drink a little by now. I'm sure his little body is using alot of energy to recover from two procedures in as many days. But, if he doesn't rouse soon, he might need to go back to your regular vet. I remember checking on a couple of mine after they'd had surgery. Kept checking to make sure they were breathing because they were so zonked - even after walking to my truck and into the house. Holding positive thoughts for you both.

Robyn, Judy and NWFLA thanks for your prayers, he is awake this morning and drank a little water. Thank God! His eye looks bad, hurts me to look at it. But I got the drops in his eye. If he will eat alittle, I will give him his pain meds and Clavamox. Thanks everyone!
    Loveing all my FOB friends.

    Morning Everyone...

Debbie: I am so GLAD read of BamBam waking up and drinking...and I am so SORRY, Hunny...that you and BamBam must go through this! Prayers and hugs for you both!

    *SCOUT* UPDATE:

I heard from our Harriette overnight via email and she wrote that today is two weeks since the specialist from Rood & Riddle came to see Scout.

He is still taking lots of medicines and she keeps him in the barn out of bright sunlight except for early mornings and late evenings. Harriette feels he is not blind in his eye..as he reacts to movements on that side of his face...if I remember, I think it is his L eye which is affected. She has no idea how 'clearly' he can see, but she knows he is not completely blind in that eye..so that's good news!

The Dr. should be calling her soon now and Harriette is anxious for her to come see Scout and do the follow-up visit.

Harriette is hopeful for his immune system to be in good working order when he comes off the meds so he won't have another attack...She will be watching him like a hawk from now on!

She thanks us for all our prayers and asks we please continue them....and if you would like, here is Scout's Candle Group:

I hope everyone's morning is going swiftly and uneventfully...and after I've had the rest of my coffee, I'll be back...ewwww! Those words make me think of Governor Terminator...and frankly, I can HARDLY WAIT until his term as Governor is TERMINATED:/ If I can endure the 1,000,000 commercials his party's candidate continues to flood the airways with...last I heard, she'd spent $170M of her own ebay dollars...I am so sick of seeing her negative ads and so sick of seeing her spending what I determine to be WRETCHED EXCESS on my TV screens...my neighbor said Meg has taught her to become 'quick-draw' with her own TV Remotes...as soon as she realizes what's coming..she hits the up/down buttons on her remote control! ###Lynne, sounds as though things are going well with Scout, all things considered. Please tell Harriette she has our thoughts, prayers and best wishes coming her way - always. And, I hope she's taking good care of herself, too.

Your comments about the commercials and tv remotes made me laugh. I get so sick and tired of the political ads - whether they are for someone I intend to vote for or not. The same blah, blah, blah over and over again - OK WE GET IT ALREADY. There are two other currently running food commericials I'd just like to go on record as hating. I've broken Olympic records getting to the mute button when they come on. One has Jamie Lee Curtis (who I love) pushing a cart in the park hawking yogurt. Man and woman take a taste and the guy, with a freakin' mouthful of yogurt which he appears to be chewing (what's up with that), gargles out his comment. I just want to smack him. The other is Heidi Klum with an up turned yogurt container, tapping the bottom of it, slurping the container and scooping yogurt residue out with her finger. I keep thinking "get the woman a da## spoon". There seems to be a line of thought that listening to people chew, slurp or otherwise slop up their food will make us go out and buy it. I'd say I'm going to boycott yogurt but with the amount I normally buy, don't think they'd really notice!!

They are such great little dogs.
Maybe Bam is just having a problem with the anthesic. It just always made Chief nuts. Would sleep for24 hours and the next 24 be drunk and walk into walls and still stagger around some the next day.

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, I had the chance to read Steve Haskin's blog about Secretariat and what a treasure trove of photos he included. I highly encourage all TB lovers to open the blue-link that Alex provided. I can't wait till the movie is released. I've seen the trailer twice and the audience went wild both times - and that's here in CT!

Alex, I loved the photo of Basil. Does he go on the road with you or stay at Fair Hill?

What a lovely message that Otherlyn posted today in honour of Lost Soldier. Thanks, Otherlyn, for providing his bloodlines. I hadn't realized that LITF was a direct descendant of Danzig!

Wishing all here "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Barb Beck: My deep sympathies to you and your family upon the passing of the adorable Freckles. Please know how sorry I am. May Freckles rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon Freckles.
To Debbie LA: Please do keep us posted about BamBam. Take it from someone who had major eye trauma, the newly-injured eye can be quite distressing in appearance but the swelling and redness will resolve quickly with medications and rest. I am sorry that Bam dislikes the Tudor Collar. Nikita simply loathed it when she had to wear one.
To Linda in NW FLA: There are so few outstanding TV commercials these days, it seems like all that is being sold in this country is prescription medication or Depends. (And with this economy, that may be true!) Egads! I love any of the Budweiser ones with the Clydesdales and there is a very amusing one with mice rapping while driving a Kia. Brent thinks that I am downright simple because I adore any of the commercials for Bush's baked beans that feature "Duke".
To Lynne B.: Thanks for the blue-link to the candle group for Scout, as well as the update from Harriette. May he have a full recovery, Robyn ####

(((Barb and family))), I'm so very sorry to hear about Freckles. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Robyn, yes, I love the Budweiser Clydesdale commercials and the Pedigree commercials with David Duchovny's voice. (I went to see the Clydesdales years ago when they came to town. I was standing at one end of the arena and when they came toward me before making their turn, the ground literally shook - awesome!) Loved the Traveler's insurance commercial with the little dog worried over where his bone would be the safest! That Kia commercial always makes me laugh with the rapping mice and Duke is so cute! But, not unusual. I mean, don't all of our dogs talk??!!

    ## Barb , my thoughts and prayers are with you as you try to adjust to this loss. RIP Freckles...

Good morning everyone , I guess it's almost noon.
I'm having a safe , good trip , and we are driving my Jeep , not the hunk's Infinity , and so of course , guess what happened ?

The drivers- side window mechanism broke with a loud noise, and the automatic control of the window is useless. The window wants to slide down - which I wouldn't mind so much except for rain ! !

The hunk has taped it shut with masking tape ...lol... which gives me a feeling of being part of the Dukes of Hazzard ! A new look and feel for me ... don't want to have it repaired until returning home , so I will have to grow accustomed to the very tacky look of it... but

if I hear one more time , ' this wouldn't have happened in my Infinity '
to which I reply , ' you mean that .. ( nose firmly tilted upward ) foreign car ?? '

Anyway , my Jeep seats are the most wonderful comfort for my back and I'm not giving it up !

Have a good day , and love your car ! , and call Mr. President and let's persuade him to stop horse slaughter once and for all. I know he would do it if we could just get through to him...
    Bye now ,

Alex posted above about a fox running in front of him and , on twitter , he says ' near disaster '

and we FOBs prefer you in the nice and healthy , unbruised and unbroken state you are now in , lol.

    Good Morning Everyone....

I spent part of my night...well actually, pre-dawn hours awake and when I did get back to sleep...I didn't wake again until SEVEN-FIFTY-FIVE A.M.!! Holy Crap, Marie!!! Whhhaaaaattttt???!!! :/

As if THAT wasn't bad enough....as I got my coffee and made my way into the office here at home...I HAD NO INTERNET ACCESS....OMGOSH! It is feeling like a MONDAE, my Family:/

I shut the computer off and then put it back to 'on' allowing it to re-boot...thinking SURELY that will be the 'fix'? Nope:/ Nawt the fix!

So...I called ATT Tech Support in INDIA...got a nice man by the name of Allen....who asked me several questions...and determined a problem with the number, perhaps?! Politely requested I hold while he did some exploring....came back to the phone with news of an OUTAGE IN MY AREA:( Waking two hours past my normal wake-up time...and NOW NO INTERNET....OY! Allen then proceeded to tell me there is no ETR (Estimated Time of Repair) on the line...try again in a few hours....have a nice day:(

I had experienced a problem sometime in the last few months with the telephone line here at home, and saved the ATT Repariman's Cell number...found it, called and left him a message...explaining it all...and then said the reason I was calling him, was basically because I just wanted to be sure someone in the United States within my Area Code, did in fact, know there is an OUTAGE...and told him waking without internet access is worse than waking with no sunshine!! I hope he laughed!

Anyway....here I was for a whole HOUR and no Joe, no ABR, no Family, no emails...oh!! And prepare to laugh out loud, Family....as I was on hold, waiting for a Technician....ATT has an automated recording playing...before the 'music'...during which time I hear Mr. Automated suggest that if I am having difficulty accessing the Internet...the 'fixes' are available by going to www..........HUH?! I have NO ACCESS TO THE INTERNET...AND YOUR 'FIX' IS FOR ME TO GO TO A WEBSITE TO DOWNLOAD FOR FREE THE 'FIXES'? Oh...I was SO LESS THAN ENCHANTED....I cannot TELL yole!:/

I can HARDLY WAIT for the new NBC sit-com titled: *OUTSOURCED* to begin this season...I think it will give me a peek into the lives of the people we ALL deal with from time to time....and perhaps a better understanding of the situations they are in, while dealing with US, too:)

Anyway....I'm here...for now and here's Joe for Wednesday:

Wednesday, September 15th... Our friend Kristin recently bought her own small farm. Her sister Kate came from Oregon to help Kristin unpack. On Sunday we met Kate. She brought carrots. Kate met our gelding Rascal, who ate most of those carrots. On Monday Kate borrowed her sisters truck and trailer, and drove back to Oregon. With Rascal. Another adoption in the books.

We also met Meghan, who has left home for the first time, to begin college at UC Davis. Her parents said they will pay expenses on a horse. Meghan found a nice place to board in Davis. She is undecided on a horse, though she has narrowed her decision down to three. I only mention all of this, because Meghan was hired at one of our favorite restaurants. She is treating Cathy and I to dinner. And there you go. My first job perk.

I should have joined the Army with Jenny. She got to see Kid Rock in concert. Kid Rock did a performance for the troops. There was pizza too.

All by herself, 15 year old Maddie raised $350.00, to help a neighbor pay part of his vet bill. His horse needed surgery, and follow up care. Maddie sold baked goodies at a produce stand. She also earned money doing house chores for another neighbor. It took Maddie more than two weeks to earn $350.00. The vet bill is paid, the horse has recovered, and the entire street had a Sunday taco feast. What a friendly neighborhood.

From the feed lot in Wilton, we said hello to a young skinny thoroughbred mare. There is a racing tattoo which says she is 6. The mare is lame, with bad feet. We are calling her Alice.

Coming to us soon, an imported performance horse, orginally purchased for big dollars in Germany. The horse can no longer jump.

Also this week, we greet a badly injured gelding from a Southern California race track.

It is Wednesday, and chores are forever. Later we could be 85 degrees. Delicious hot coffee from Dunkin Donuts. Yummy pastry rolls made by Costco. Enjoy your wait until next year with the Red Sox Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses. Dave Clark Five on the oldies station...

I checked with the hunk and he said of course he used duct tape - masking tape is paper and wouldn't hold a window.
Then he asked why and I said , 'oh, no reason , just wondering '

I was not going to let him know I posted what he did ,and told you the wrong tape , lol.
Apparently , you're right and we travel with duct tape , the answer to all problems ;) Now I know how to hem my jeans that are too long ! !

Just got off the phone with Barb Az. she couldn't go to work to day, Freckle so heavy on her mine. But she got him 7 years ago at the age of 33/34 he was 40 years old. Just the best horse, you could do anything with him. He loved Kids, they showed him and won ribbons with him. We both cried on the phone, she gave him the best of his last years. Some others would take 200 dollars and send him to slaughter. She did the right thing by Freckles.
Barb, I think Freckle is sending you his thanks! Writing in tears, can't see.

Hello Gang. I will be semi retiring on Oct. 1. YAY! Yippeeeeeeeeeeee Skippeeeeeeeeeeeeee. It's not coming too soon, either. I am physically exhausted. And I will have more time now to stay in touch with everyone. We are still rescuing dogs. Perseus and Apollo are the latest. Both Salukis from hoarding situations. Apollo is now in a new home and doing great. Perseus is still healing. He was in horrid condition but he is mending, slowly but surely, and he will always have the tic disease. Unfortunately, 4 GH's in his group have passed away. But we forge ahead, don't we? I have also taken in another rescue. Her name is Ruby. She is a Texas Heeler with a personality as big as the moon. We are getting in 2 more Saluki rescues, both puppies. We also have a border collie mix. He is 11 years old and in good health. He takes Thyroxine 2x daily. He would be a good, quiet dog for someone. Ruby was surrendered because the people are moving to a new home with white sofas!?!?!?! Sometimes I just can't stand it.

I have 2 more weeks of back breaking work, then I'll be here more. Thanks for asking about me, Robyn. I love you all!!!

Margieeeeeeeeeeee!!! Yippppeeee-Skippppyyyyy:) Just keep putting one tired foot in front of the other, Margie...and pretty soon, you'll be ALL DONE!!

The googies must go because we decided to buy WHITE SOFAS???? WTH....???? White sofas are more important than a googie greeting you at the end of a hard day? White sofas are more important than a smiling, happy to see you, Googie face? Idiots...they are IDIOTS!! I hope their white sofas bring them years of devoted, unconditional love...LOL! I hope a guest spills RED WINE ALL OVER THEIR WHITE SOFAS.....LOL....MOAR!

I'm looking forward to seeing you back here, Margieeeeeeeeee:)

Robyn: Yes...small, small world...even Allstate Insurance Company's Customer Service Reps are in India...I was more than mildly gobsmacked to learn that one day when I was unable to access the website...I called Customer Service...a nice man in India answered the phone....and when I tried asking if the website was experiencing any problems..he hung up on me...I wasn't rude or anything...he just disconnected me!

I LOVE the Traveler's commercials, too..the poor dog and his worrying about his bone being safe...and the one where all the wild animals get along together...that one is so WONDERFUL...too bad the world isn't like that one!

It's nearly 11p here in the westwing...I gotta put the coffee on and get to bed....see yole in the morning:)

Hiya, FsOB! It's a pinky, blue western sky again this AM. Surely today we'll have rain, we have avoided it recently each time has been forecast. As Brent just said, ever so eloquently as he came downstairs, "Sh__, it's cold!"

I saw the TV commercial yesterday for the new movie with Diane Lane, the one which is about the late, great "Big Red". I can't wait for it to open! I think that it is anticipated in October.

Wishing all here a safe & productive day. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Margie in NM: Welcome back, dear FOB! You've truly been missed. Those ghastly people who gave up the sweet Texas Heeler all because of a white sofa.... Ours is sky blue and I simply cover the area with two towels and a draped sheet where Nikita loves to perch. It is still relatively pristine after five years, despite a red wine spill from a friend who was visiting! Kudos to you on reaching semi-retirement. Please give my love to all of the dogs and a special pet to Perseus & Apollo in honour of Brent, who is Greek-American.
To Lynne B.: Thanks for giving a friendly shout-out to our Margie in NM. Yes, I love that Traveler's commercial too, the one with the dog trying to protect his bone. Funny how he even dreams of the bone. Don't you wonder what it is that our dogs dream?
To Angel Dee: Good morning and rainbows to you! ####

It would matter not to me, where you finished...though the Winner's Circle is a grand place to visit...so I'm delighted for you and your people that you visited yesterday:) What matters to me is that you and all your brothers and sisters come across that finish line and gallop out safe/sound.

Robyn: I know....dog's and their dreams! It would be so great if they could tell us! Murphy spent a good amount of time running in his sleep...and talking sometimes, too...but I read somewhere that they can put themselves in some 'harm's way' if they exhibit too much in the way of 'activity' while dreaming...so it's a good idea to gently wake them...I did that with Murph a time or twelve when he seemed to be too 'hot on the trail' of whatever he was chasing:)

If you're reading here and hadn't considered taking action to help save horses from slaughter before reading Joe this morning...I'm pretty sure you'll be giving consideration after reading Joe this morning:

Thursday, September 16th... This e-mail from little Allison: At school I got in an argument with a girl who says horse slaughter is neccessary. To weed out the inferior. I told her that is like saying Jerry Springer is neccessary. To fill up an hour. There has to be better options.

No doubt the misconception of many. Only the inferior are slaughtered. When in truth, some of the nicest horses you will ever see wait for transportation to Mexico. New feed lots all over Northern California. Holding cells. Death row. Every breed imaginable.

On the phone with a friend the other night, and she wants to know, are things getting better?

Nope. More horses leaving California for slaughter in Mexico than ever before. From a new feed lot near Livermore, two large trailers left on Sunday. There are more horse killers. Most are not legal in our country. We are talking easy money. Short hours. Enough horses to make every killer happy. From ads on the internet. Auctions. Race tracks. Rodeos. Private breeders dumping their stock.

Ranches in other states are selling their horses to California killers.

The girl who goes to school with little Allison. I would have told her, horse slaughter is evil. Even for the inferior. If you knew how horrible the trailer ride is. All those eyes, peering out through tiny slots. Your own imagination can picture the terror. Many slaughter plants in Mexico refuse to use a bullet. Death is slow, and painful.

    There are humane options.

The way things are in our current world, compassion should be a priority. For all living things.

And hey, having kids argue their beliefs, automatically gives hope for horses. Bringing the awful subject to light.

The romance of horses. Greeting you as the sun appears. Hard to imagine anything better. Hard to imagine why the entire world is not hooked.

Do you recall Robert Browning's poem
All's Right With The World ?
That's how I felt to see our Dee here.
It's wonderful to see you, Angel girl.

And Margie , how I have missed the stories about the dogs and all you are doing . So happy to see you check in , and I hope your retirement is not long in coming ... happy days !

Barb , I know your heart is broken , and I send you best wishes and hugs and Barbaro- sister -love.

    Nicanor , 3 in 36.20 , woooo - hoooo , big guy.

Martita Sangrita , way to win , go girl !

I love the commercial Lynne mentioned earlier, the one where all the wild animals get along, a
zebra and a lion drinking at a stream together , and many animals playing together. How wonderful it would be !

And it's wonderful to be able to say hello to you , while I'm out traveling. Thinking of you all,

###Robyn, yes, my son is safely back in University. He was happy to see his friends and we had a good trip. Thank you for asking.

So nice to read these comments and 'see' everyone.

The movie Secretariat comes out here on October 8th. I will be first in line. (And if I'm not, everyone else will be pushed out of my way.) I hope they do Big Red and his people justice. I don't think Riva Ridge gets a mention in the movie.

Summer is still hanging on here.

Hiya, FsOB! It's a dark and rainy morning after a lightning-filled Nor'easter type of storm last night. It was a good night just to snuggle on the sofa in the great room.

And what a happy TGIF has dawned - our Angel Dee is back. Please send some rainbows to our stormy skies today. Wishing all here a safe & productive Friday. May all horses & their riders come safely across the finish line this weekend. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Dee: Lovely to have you back!
To Margie; Yes, I may actually call the small cinema in Mystic to ask when they've booked a run of the film "Secretariat". Because I saw the trailer there on two separate occasions, I'm sure they'll book it. Hopefully, it'll be as soon as it is released.
To Judy: Glad that your son was happy to start his new term. My step-son is really enjoying his tour with "Hot, Hot Heat". He's taken some amazing photos on his sojourn.
To Lynne B.: Nikita isn't as dreamy as some of my other dogs were. My first dog, who was a Collie, would have the kinds of dreams in which her lower legs appeared to be running. She was such a beautiful dog and her name, aptly, was Beauty.
To Sofie's Lee: Awesome news about Martita Sangrita, the horse named after our Resident Muse, Martita. Thanks for that update, Lee. ####

Good Morning?? I dunno, Family...didn't start out so 'gud' for me this morning:-O

Up a bit past 6a...got coffee...from the kitchen I heard loud...BANG/THUMP noises...thought it was Seymoure being a bizzy kitteh somehow...turned to look and saw him laying quietly on the floor in hallway...???? Then...it sounded like it was coming from my back porch...and as I approached the laundry room to go out to see what in the WORLD?? I expected to see a couple of hefty-sized Raccoons arguing...I opened the door and nothing on my porch....and then....I realized it was coming from my water heater...OMG!! It sounded like someone was inside the heater...with a big wooden block...pounding for all he was worth...the noise was so FRIGHTENING....I opened the door to examine inside...and as I stood there having consumed NO COFFEE...it suddenly occurred to me....IT COULD EXPLODE, LYNNE...I rushed indoors and called my 'fix-it' neighbor..who, of course, was still sleeping..but I was so SCARED! He came over...of course by the time he got here, it had shut off...so, I turned the hot water on in the kitchen sink...and let it run until the burner fired up again...it's a propane water heater...we don't have natural gas in the foothills...it ran fine....natural sounding 'creaks' or 'popping' sounds...but the person inside with the wooden block...was gone:/

Since then...I've showered and it's turned off/on a few more times...the neighbor even came back to check it again....nothing...nada...for PETE'S SAKES...by now, my neighbor surely thinks I was on something this morning!!! LOL I heard what I heard..and that's what I heard! I feel a bit like that old movie, *GAS LIGHT* with Betty Davis, I think it was her....OY!! What a HORRID WAY TO START A DAY!!

I got on-line and googled "diagnosing a gas water heater for problems" and found that a noisy water heater can mean sediment on the coils...I don't know if gas heaters have coils..I don't think they do...but steam pockets can form on coils...I think that must mean for electric heaters...or sediment could be the reason...not dangerous..just loud! It suggests the tank should be drained twice a year if sediment is present in our water...well...we have well water here...and it's FULL OF CALCIUM...I mean so much calcium that if you boil water for pasta...there's a white ring around the inside of the pan...I don't drink this water..I buy bottled, and recycle the empties! For now, however, I feel like "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The sounds have not presented since early this morning...I'll keep an ear open...and if it begins sounding like it did earlier, then I'll drain the dang thing...but for now...I don't want to disturb it:-O

Carleen:) I think we might get some much needed rain by Sunday....if they're forecasting as far south as San Jose...that should include me, I'm north east of you:) We need it badly!

BobbieB:)Sorry for your 'so short' visit this morning...but glad to see you! Have a great day out there into the 'werld' traveling:)

Here's Joe for Friday...his Blog y'day made me want to be sick..and today:) it's a 'flip-side', good one, imho:)

Friday, September 17th... I thought he was made up. For over a year I have been hearing about a young man who helps horses. I truly believed he did not exist. But yesterday there he was. A truck more dusty than mine. He looks like one of those male models from a Macys ad. The young man has a sore leg from getting kicked. He apologized for walking with a limp. He is that polite.

We met in a town called Roseville, where the young man lives. He found new homes for auction horses. Some of those horses never went through the sales ring. They were so pathetic, he knew no one would bid but horse killers. So he bought the horses privately, rehabbed them back to good health, and found new homes.

The auction in Roseville closed, so the young man began going on road trips. Helping horses at other Northern California auctions. He hates mexican rodeo. Calls it the biggest embarrassment California has ever suffered. And so the young man tries to help mexican rodeo horses too.

The young man has a full time job hauling hay. His boss owns 20 acres, and allows the young man to keep horses there for free. His boss also gives him a big discount on hay. I told the young man, what a nice boss. Better not quit your day job.

There were many ways I could have gone with this story. Writing about specific horses the young man has helped. Writing about the love he has for his family. I could have told you about his cat Toby, who he found as a kitten at Roseville auction. The young man cannot go 5 minutes without mentioning Toby.

I could have told you how he loves sushi. The rock band Journey. Over and over he has watched The Sopranos.

The young man phoned last week. Says he reads Tbfriends on his fancy phone. The young man has every Thursday afternoon off. Can we meet and talk?

We talked about horses and restaurants and music. The new TV season, and can you believe summer is really over?

We talked about kids and horses. How horses continue to rescue kids.

The young man said to me: I just want to be a good influence. I just want to help.

All the way home from Roseville, I was jazzed. Inspired. In the two hours we were together, I can honestly say... he is a good influence.

And he put me in the mood for sushi.

Have a happy weekend. They say maybe some rain.

    Joe

Lynne, your water heater experience was surely a scarey way to start the day. And, of course, nothing ever makes the sound again when another set of ears is present! You were right to be cautious. Years ago Sears had water heaters on sale - so I bought one and put it in our storage shed, still in its box. Everyone made fun of me -who buys a spare water heater? Me!! A year or so later while I was recuperating from a little lawn mower accident OUCH, our water heater died. Ah ha, I just happened to have one on hand!!! He who laughs last, laughs best.

Joe was a smile maker today, for sure. Did anyone else send a letter to Jenny Hartman? I sent one the other day and especially thanked her for her service - even though Joe misses her!

Posted by: NWFLAFOB at September 17, 2010 9:36 PM

    ##
LindaNWFLA: LOL! you know, it has crossed my mind too, to get one to have on hand...but I have nowhere to store it...I don't have a garage..and my little shed is packed to the rafters with kid's belongings....:/ So...if/when this one dies..I'll be making a trip to town but not in KATIE..she's a little two-seater car...I've packed stuff inside her before...but I can't see a water heater fitting.

Once at a local hardware store...they had those tall backed green garden chairs on sale...I got two of them...and they rode 'shot-gun' it was quite the challenge getting them into Katie...and a man sitting in a car opposite me..(in front...on the next parking aisle..) I could almost HEAR HIM LAUGHING as he watched me...struggle...and put Katie's seat as far back as it would slide..and then lower the back of her seat as far as it would lower...and then I began the two chairs entering the car! But guess what?! YEP:) I drove home with those two chairs...one fit into the other...just 'dine&fandy' I wanted to look up and smile BIG at that man who thought I was so STOOPID..but instead, I just got into the driver's seat...and off we went:) Two girls like us...one a 4 cylinder, 5-speed manual transmission:) and the other almost as old as dirt whose 5-speed has by now, dropped to 3.5 LOL

Katie's rear window goes down...and there have been occassions where I've had to put her window down to bring home such things as mouldings too long to fit the passenger compartment...I think I even brought home a few 2x6 Doug Fir boards once, too:) can't remember the length...but out that back window they stuck...LOL! Hey..a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do when she doesn't own a truck! :)

Carleen: I had forgotten about Ingrid Bergman!! That movie! I saw it on TV when I was in Jr. High School...and was GLUED to the TV the whole time....that poor woman...her evil husband...wasn't it her evil husband who was making her feel as though she was losing her mind? At any rate....whomever it was they were EVIL to her!

Can't you tell the Task Master to 'lighten-up' a little bit..it IS Friday afternoon in the westwing, afterall! :)

Joan R: So good to see you...even if just time for a 'quickie'....I hope your weekend brings you some much deserved r&r, Joan...xxoo

Hi everyone. It's good to see Margie and Dee here. Maybe some of the others will stop by? Gotta hope!

I watched the last episode every of As The World Turns. It's not my show, but I thought I would see the end. After the globe spun for the last time in Bob's office, the first commercial was for the Secretariat movie. Cool.

Bad news here. The Momma of those 2 baby kittens who died recently was also found dead. Somehow she was on top of a trashcan down where we feed the ferals. No clue how she got there (although we doubt she did it) and no clue how she died.

We are devastated. She never took to staying at the new feeding area. She ALWAYS came back here to our deck. A fixture. It is so wrong that she's gone. Our little feral colony is so small now and I am scared.

Sorry for the downer. I hope everyone has a safe and happy weekend.

    LET THE *CELEBRATION* BEGIN!!!! WHEEEEEEE!!

Dear Our Fabulous Wild Horse Supporters,

We are SO excited to FINALLY announce the best news we have had to share with you in over 2 1/2 years!

OUR MUSTANGS ARE GETTING THEIR SANCTUARY AND HAVE THE BLM’S SUPPORT!!!

Over the past three days, I have been to meetings in Sacramento and again in Washington, DC. I’ve met with BLM Director, Bob Abbey, Deputy Director, Mike Pool, along with the Wild Horse and Burro team. The BLM has officially agreed to support going forward with the development of the wild horse Eco- sanctuary for the horses in holding! Also in DC, I met with Congressman, Jim Moran, who had already given his blessing, but is submitting legislation to members of Congress on behalf of these wild mustangs. We are so thankful to him and his staff for their efforts on the wild horse and burro issue. All the meetings were fabulous and we could not be happier about the news!

This final acceptance by the BLM this week was the hurdle we had yet to get over. We are so thankful for the opportunity to start our Pilot Program with 1,000 horses, and we aim to get all 36,000+ horses in holding soon after. This action by the BLM shows great leadership on the part of Bob Abbey and Mike Pool for taking a stand for our beautiful mustangs and accepting the solution we have offered. Saving America’s Mustangs gives our sincerest thanks for the monumental cooperation on the part of the BLM for an alternative to the holding pens.

This is a truly a dream come true and I’m thrilled to share this news with all of you!! Let the rejoicing begin!!

    A happy weekend everyone.

It's clear and bright if a little chilly here this September morning. No frost, thank goodness, so the runner beans will last a little longer. The Victorians grew them for their pretty red flowers and then someone found that the seed pods were good to eat.

    ### Lynne Brown

Good news at last for your mustangs. How wonderful. And thank you for your entertaining posts. We too have water that is incredibly hard - from a borehole. You only have to leave water standing in a vase or glass a little too long and a white ring of limescale forms. It also coats the taps - you'd say faucets of course - and furs up the pipes. But the water is lovely to drink and better than the bottled stuff. It's good for teeth and bones, but not so good for skin and hair. I'd hate to go back to the treated kind that is piped through the mains to most people - and costs a fortune.

So very happy to read the good report of positive progress being made concerning our treasured wild herds. Madeleine is indeed an Angelic Warrior, as are all of the FOB and others who diligently participate in these noble efforts.

This good news is only one small step. We must continue the march. However, this IS, finally, an opportunity to pause, to give Thanks, take heart, and to gather strength.

    Today is a good day.

    Loving BARBARO.

KathyB...In my excitement and glee for the Mustangs..I missed your post about the Mama Kitteh...I'm so sorry, Kathy! It frightens me that she was found on top of the trash can! I hope no one in your neighborhood is responsible! ((((kathy))))

Liz,UK: Yes...well water in this area is just LOADED with the lime or calcium...I had placed all the ice cubes from the ice maker into a 12qt soup pot...I can't remember if I wrote that in my post y'day or not...but I knew we might not have water in the morning...and wanted to be able to brush my teeth, at least...I ended up not needing those melted cubes...and as I went to empty the pot I saw so much calcium/lime on the inside of the pan...I ran my finger around and there it sat on my finger tip....LOTS of it:/ and the water was 'cloudy'...and as I tipped to empty it...a 'cloud' of the stuff gathered...it felt 'gritty' even:/ I don't like the taste of this water, I'm glad yours is enjoyable..but ours is not pleasant to taste, imo. I saw all those minerals and thought to my self...no WONDER our water heaters don't last long...there must be TONS of build-up at the bottom of mine..and the clean-out...the 'spigot', where one attaches a garden hose to empty and re-fill the heater..is at least 6" from the bottom of the heaters...where ALL the minerals are...so, actually I can't see where draining and re-filling would do much more than 'drink the propane' to re-heat the water, which right now is around $2.50 p/gallon...and I am afraid to drain it..as I'm afraid I'd truly disturb all that scale and then what? An expensive plumber's visit to install a new heater. I'm just holding my breath and hoping for the best right now:)

I hope everyone will enjoy their Saturday...and all horses putting hooves to tracks, be safe all...safe trip home and back to the barns!

    Morning all...

Yipee and Skippee for the Wild Mustangs!
I was so happy to read about the success on all the hard work Madeleine Pickens has done and all the letters every one wrote...we got through!!!!
E- m a i l time!!!! If we write and call enough they have to take time to listen to us!

It does hurt though to read about the 175 horses that may take a sad journey to the south of the boarder today.. I pray that Life Savers Horse Rescue can work wonders and have a few mircles come their way....

Lynne, Gaslight has been one of my favorite Ingrid Bergman movies, along with Casa Blanca.
I might say that I'm an old movie fan. They just don't make that many good movies anymore. But I can't wait to see Secretariat!

Take care all...safe journies to all horses and their jockies this week-end.

This week-end, my daughter's boyfriend of 5 years moves to Santa Barabara to finish his last two years of college. That boy is like one of my own and I will miss him something bad. My daughter has one more year at De Anza JC and then she too will be off. You just have to let go and pray you taught them well.... anyway

    Happy Saturday to you !

    WOW WOW

    THE MUSTANGS MADELEINE PICKENS ROCKS

    A win , a win , a save , actually 36,000 saved !

This is what we work for , strive for , pray for.

    It's wonderful , wonderful.

How I wish we could do the same for our
    domestic horses , who continue
    to ride the death trucks
to the lands of Canada and Mexico.

If I were a billionaire , I'd give one million dollars to every Senator for the vote to kill horse slaughter , transportation and any and all kinds of horse slaughter.

I know you would too. But since we can't -- let's keep working -- trying -- emailing -- telling -- and someday , hopefully soon -- we will win.
We will save those horses of the future, maybe the near future --

And those of us who can will pick a meeting place , a place where most all of the FOBs can come to ,

    and we'll hold a giant convocation , rally , celebration , memorial
maybe at the foot of Lincoln's statue ,

and we'll tell the news reporters,
this is the USA , and
we don't eat horses . And now , the rest of the world doesn't eat our horses either.

    Well , it's a lovely dream --
and I don't mean to offend good FOBs like
    Judy and Liz ,
after all , we had to work for years to close
hs plants in the US - so there's no holier than thou here,
just love for horses , and wishing and hoping ,
    and calling and emailing ,

I just love you FOBs , for the way you love
horses and the work you do ,
what would the horses do without you ? ?
Don't mean to pat us on the back too much ,
    I'm just saying .....
    bye now ,

And hugs to all , citing Lou Ann, who walk the
rugged path - whatever hurt or heartache you're bearing ,

And sending a good thought to Skyler --

and to all I send good wishes -

To the horses and riders today - I pray for good showings , do your best and good luck - and
most of all - come home safe and sound -

What great news about the mustangs.
Every 2 years Lubbock just goes nuts. Texas Tech plays Univ. Of Texas sat night. The motels and hotels are full in Lubbock and people are renting rooms 60 miles any direction from Lubbock.
I plan to stay home and watch it on TV. The Univ. of Texas will bring "Bevo" their Longhorn mascot. Tech has the Masked Raider who circles the entire field every time Tech scores on a beautiful black horse.

    Morning Everyone..

Sunday Morning...not light out yet here in the foothills of the westwing..but smells of rain...I think just lots of humidity is all, though.

Carleen: Our weather isn't forecasting rain here for today...yole in the Bay Area will get some and Sacramento might get 'light' precip, .10" is all...the further north someone is in CA today the heavier the precip will be....dang:( I thought we might get a bit of 'freshening up', too..but apparently not.

Debbie: LOL! At least when you 'biff' the blue-ink-linking' it looks good! You get the whole post blue...I biff it and just a partial attempt shows up...and it's not even in color! You are still the *QUEEN* of blue-ink-linking, Deb!

I hope everyone has a 'dine&fandy' day today...it's Sunday...*FOOTBALL DAY IN AMERICA* :) My Boyz are playing the *SAINTS* at home today in SF...and I am HOPING they do better this day than last week in Seattle!

Alex:) I hope *FAVRE* and his team do well today, too! I root for those *VIKINGS* unless they play the *NINERS*:)

Off now, to 'make nice' indoors and be sure the birdies and those 'skweeeerls' are taken care of, too.

    Good Sunday morning all.

Lynne, I check the forecast for San Jose, Salinas
(my guys are playing golf there today) and Santa Barbara (where my daughter is) and no where did it say rain..like it did two days ago. We could use the rain, but I would like Mon-Thurs.HA! Dream on...

BobbieB-I'm sending out prayers and hugs to you and your dear friend. My you both find comfort in each other during this hurtful time.

Kathyb- I like the way Jane said that the Momma kitty and her babies are now together. They can run and play together now.

Last night late, about 11:45pm I was "channel surfing" and found on HBO the last 20 minutes or so of the special they did on Babaro. Silly me, I just sat there and cried as if his life just ended. I guess the word is sobbed...cause that's what I did.

Hiya, FsOB! What a glorious Sunday we've had here on the banks of the Thames. Somce clouds are settling in now, but it was brilliantly sunny and warm earlier in the day. Yesterday Brent & I went to the penultimate polo match of the 2010 season hosted by the Newport Polo Club in Portsmouth, RI. It was unseasonably grey and cool, but at least I got to line up for what they dub the "sweaty palm slap" at the close of the match. It really is a tad daunting to see those polo ponies come galloping just a couple of feet from where one is standing in order to smack the right hands of the riders.

For all FsOB in CT, RI, NY, & MA, there is a wonderful event which will be held next Saturday, 09/25/2010, at the Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement Centre in Salem, CT. It's the annual daylong music festival held on the grounds. For more info, you may go to the Website. In case of rain, the event will be held on Sunday the 26th.

Awesome news about the positive commitments that have been given to Madeleine Pickens. Let's hope that the BLM makes good on its word. (Please forgive me if there is an air of cynicism to my last comment.)

Alex, thanks for the blue-link about Goldikova's half-sister. May Galikova have a long and successful racing career. Thanks as well for the photo of the horse which you were schooling the other day. Wishing all "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Bobbie B: Reaching out across the miles to you and your dear friend, who has had such frightening news from the oncologist.
To Carleen: Yes, if I had seen that HBO special about Barbaro, I'd have been sobbing, too. I have absolutely no doubt that he would have won the Triple Crown. I revere Scretariat as well and can't wait to see that new movie.
To Debbie LA: There is a similar prison program in KY and it reportedly has great success in turning the lives of its human participants around. Isn't that quote from Churchill right on the mark?
To Lynne B: That water heater situation must have been scary. Ours blew on my step-daughter's birthday, the first March that we had in our home here.
To Kathy B: My sympathies to you, how sad that the feral feline Mum has died as well. May she rest in peace and may pertetual light shine upon her and her kittens.
To Angel Dee: Seeing you back here does my soul good! ####

LOL...I'm so 'cornfused' today with the football games and now the teams....I wrote earlier here of how I'd root for the Giants with Eli...not considering his BROTHER, Peyton...and those *COLTS* are the 'other team' tonight!!! Whichever way this one ends is fine with me...not that they care, but can you IMAGINE being the parents seated in the VIP Box...watching both your sons play on opposing teams..I mean, how would you deal with that, I wonder?!

I got my horse terms mixed up earlier this morning...I saw 'colts' and my brain registered 'bronocs' somehow...geeze....some days are like this, I guess:/

Hiya, FsOB! A brand new Monday is dawning here on the banks of the Thames. The morning glories have opened their "Heavenly Blue" faces and I had a fleeting glimpse of my neighbour's black & white cat (whom I've dubbed "Krazy Kat").

Again, a reminder to all FsOB in CT, RI, NY, & NJ, Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement Centre in Salem, CT, will have its annual music festival on this Saturday afternoon, 09/25/2010. Tickets can be purchased at the gates of the MFER and more info is available on its Website. The rain date is Sunday the 26th. Hoping some of you can make it!

Alex, thnaks for the pic of Judge Beautiful. What a stately horse! Wishing all here "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Kathy B: I wish that I could have seen the last episode of "As the World Turns" last Friday. Another passing of an era.... My late Mother and Grandmothers watched that show and I've been familiar with it since my preschool years. It's especially sad for a family friend, who is 88 and loves that show. ####

Here's Joe for Monday...you gotta take time when you are able...to see the photos....*MAXI* is in the front seat of his truck....Maxi must go on 'missions' with her Daddy, like *JULES* did:) Warms my heart!

Monday, September 20th... Yesterday we had rain, wind, and sun. 16 ducks landed in the small pasture behind our house, and stayed for the afternoon. Stephanie came from Esparto to say hi. Jessica came from Sacramento to say hi. And 10 year old Abby came from a town called Pinole. For over an hour Abby waited at our front gate, while I was gone. Her first words to me: How about those San Francisco Giants?

I raked all the poop from every field but one. Cathy and I unwrapped and wrapped legs. (not our legs, but the legs of injured race horses) Scrubbed water buckets. Gave extra goodies to the skinny. I got a pot of Italian Goulash started on the stove. Read the Sunday sports section. Cleaned a kitty litter, and no, I did not add it to the Goulash. Replied to e-mails. We already knew our dog with 3 legs, Maxi, is lazy. Ask her to come here, and she waits for a better offer. But chasing after a ball, Maxi can suddenly run faster than Seattle Slew.

And through it all... chores, ball playing, and a free weekend of HBO. The little phone kept ringing, with horses in trouble. Refusing to take time off on a Sunday afternoon.

Big ugly stock trailers, filled with doomed horses, leaving for slaughter in Mexico. Another rescue person showed a video on Facebook, of murdered horses in Mexico. I once watched such a video, and once is more than enough.

And so here I am, a feels like autumn Monday morning, asking for help with unwanted horses. My phone number is 530-383-2120.

Horses from race tracks. Feed lots. Home foreclosures. And families who can no longer feed their horses. Some are free, some priced by the pound. Tbfriends is happy to help with transportation, within common sense distance. There is a simple screening process. If you have room for one more horse, give me a call.

A special Happy Birthday to Rachel, who today is (cough cough) years old. Her thoroughbred gelding Burt is helping Rachel celebrate. A trail ride and carrot cake. Burt is a son of Bertrando, and he came from our ranch with major race track injuries. But now Burt moves like Hasselhoff on that dancing show. Tonight Rachel and her husband have dinner at Tex Wasabi. And then dessert at Cheesecake Factory. Burt waits at home for any leftovers...

Kathyb , isn't that Fish and Game bunch just unbelievable ! I hope Walter Jones can do something , I know he will try at least.

Their position that the horses are feral pests sounds like the BLM and is financially based of course. Now do we have to fight in-state too ? - money rules everywhere.
And I'm so sorry for the situation you have to face with the loss of the kittehs - it's heart- breaking and I feel for you in this loss.
    -----

I thank all of you who have written such feeling messages to me in the situation with my sick friend. It helps me to know you're there.
    -----

Judy , I wish your son a successful year at univ.
My daughter is a professor so she has begun her year also.
    -----

    I might watch Hawaii Five O , how do they do it , I forget , is it 5 O , or 5-0 , or what, lol ,
I hope they have a good Dano or is that Dan-O , or Dann O , lol . Whatever ! ! Just give me some Hawaiian guitar music and ocean waves - and tanned men without shirts , ah , nothing like a good cop show.

Rachel Alexandra worked 6 furlongs in 1:12.05
which is blazing fast , and looks like the old

North Carolina's Wild Horses Face Uncertain Future

COROLLA, N.C. (AP) - On a stretch of barrier island without paved roads, some of the last wild horses in the eastern United States are seeing their world get smaller each year.

A boom in vacation homes in the last 25 years in this remote place has seen the descendants of colonial Spanish mustangs confined to a 7,500-acre sanctuary on the northern tip of North Carolina's Outer Banks. And now the herd itself may shrink along with its habitat.

A plan backed by the federal government would see the herd reduced from about 115 horses today to no more than 60 in a bid to stop the animals, designated North Carolina's state horse this year, from competing with federally protected birds for increasingly hard-to-come-by resources.

The Fish and Wildlife Service says the plan will reduce harmful behavior by a species it considers a nuisance. But residents who rely on the horses to bring in tourist dollars or who simply cherish the mustangs as a symbol of the country's spirit worry it could bring about the collapse of the herd through hereditary diseases and other complications of a shallow gene pool.

"The American wild horse is disappearing from our country," said Karen McCalpin, executive director of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, a nonprofit group that manages the herd. "To me, they're as much a symbol of freedom as the bald eagle."

Wild mustangs, which are found in their greatest numbers in Western states, at one time could also be found in large herds throughout the southeast. Today, they're confined to a few isolated spots in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia.

Thousands of mustangs once roamed the Outer Banks, descendants of horses brought during an ill-fated Spanish colonial mission in the 1520s. But Highway 12 has been steadily moving north through the barrier islands, reaching Corolla in the 1980s and bringing rapid development with it.

Huge, brightly painted vacation homes now line the road, and even pop up behind the dunes on Corolla's beach, accessible only by vehicles with four-wheel drive. Once the paved road ends, there's no development except vacation homes, some as big as mansions.

It's a remote area, where responses to 911 calls can take up to 45 minutes. There are more than 1,300 homes in this part of the island, which has a year-round population of fewer than 150.

The horses around Corolla are in a unique situation. Unlike their counterparts farther south in Shackleford Banks, the mustangs don't have any kind of federal protection.

In fact, on its website, the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge describes the animals as something of a pest: "The Fish and Wildlife Service considers the horses to be nonnative, feral animals and not a natural component of the barrier island ecosystem," it reads. "These animals compete with native wildlife species for food and fresh water."

The management plan calls for the size of the herd to be kept at 60, meaning horses in excess of that number would have to be captured and put up for adoption to new homes off the island, while remaining mares would be treated with contraceptive medication to stop them from becoming pregnant.

That could leave the horses vulnerable to hereditary diseases and other problems associated with a shallow gene pool, according to Gus Cothran, a professor of veterinary integrative biosciences at Texas A&M University who has studied the animals.

Already, some of the horses show signs of inbreeding in their small stature, looking more like ponies than the full-grown mustangs they are.

"Within a generation, it would almost certainly reduce the genetic diversity even more," he said. "They would be at a pretty high risk to be unable to survive another severe bottleneck."

That would be disastrous not just for horse lovers, but for the local economy, which has capitalized on the animals as a tourist attraction.

Six companies give guided tours of the horses' habitat to thousands of tourists every year, bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"There's the lighthouse and there's the horses, and aside from that there's no other kind of economic activity," said Kevin Jackson with Bob's Off-Road Wild Horse Adventure Tours.

The wild horse fund has put its hopes in a bill introduced in Congress by Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C. The bill would set a target population of between 120 and 130 horses, and allow the introduction of mares from the herd at Shackleford Banks, on the other end of the Outer Banks, to enhance the genetic diversity of the Corolla horses.

In the 1990s, Jones authored legislation that brought similar federal protection to the wild horses at Shackleford Banks, located in the Cape Lookout National Seashore.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has commissioned a two-year study, begun in June, to measure the effects of nonnative species like the horses on the region.

"We don't really know what's going on over there, and we'd like to get the science together so we can better manage our resources there," said Mike Hoff, manager of the Currituck refuge.

But the federal government agrees with the horses' advocates that booming development is a challenge to all wildlife, native and nonnative alike.

"The county says there are 3,195 developable lots up there," Hoff said. "At that point, what habitat is left?"

    *SCOUT UPDATE*

I heard from our Harriette this afternoon...

The Vet has been back out to see *SCOUT* and was very pleased with how he is doing! She said he had made a lot of improvement and that she was 'encouraged'. She believes as Harriette does, that he can see now out of that eye, they don't know how well though.

She brought lots more medicine and eye drops and said she will be back in one month. She said he will probably have to stay on meds for the rest of his life, or the condition will flare back up. It could flare up anyway, and each time it does, he loses more and more of his sight. The Dr. feels for now, anyway....his eye has been saved, so that is GOOD NEWS:)

Harriette thanks us all for our prayers and candles...she's very stressed, as you can understand...and we need to remember her in our prayers, too.

She said *NOAH*, her yellow Lab who will turn 14 next month is her best buddy in the world:) She said Noah has become such a good 'food thief' in his old age...she changed her Facebook photo to the adoreable drawing of the yellow Lab puppy eyeing that cupcake on the counter:)

I hope everyone has a good Monday night....Gooooooo *NINERS*:)

Hiya, FsOB! My thanks to Debbie LA and Carol for the info about the wild horses in the Outer Banks of NC. Have any FsOB ever seen these horses? If so, I'd love to read your impressions of them. Thanks as well to Debbie LA for the news that Nicanor is slated to run on 09/24/10. I hope that some FsOB will turn out in a show of support for his race. May everyone have "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### Hello & thanks to our Resident Angel, Dee M!
To Lynne B: Thanks for the update about the clinical improvement for Scout, Harriette's beloved horse. I lit a candle for him, thanks for the blue-link.
To Judy: I believe that my step-son may be on tour eventually in Montreal and Calgary. I know for sure that he will be in Vancouver and Toronto, setting up the sound system for "Hot, Hot, Heat". I'm not sure if I'll be able to watch Hawaii 5-0 tonight, I am knackered, to use Alex's term.
To Bobbie B: Great news about Rachel Alexandra. Thanks so very much!
To Kathy B: Yes, I saw some mini-clips from the last episode of ATWT on CBS' Daytime Website. I did get to see Dr. Bob Hughes leave his office & turn out the light, as the globe was spinning. Nicely done, but sad. How many daytime talk shows are really necessary and will anyone keep up with/follow the talk shows for 50+ years? Doubtful.

Tuesday, September 21st... I got a dollar a bale, for every bale of alfalfa stacked. From a sweet old lady who makes amazing strawberry smoothies. In less than 3 hours, I had $240.00. Came home and complained about my sore back, but no one really cares. Little Aubrey only wants to hang out with horses. Maddie is just a few feet away, yet she sends me a text. Maddie laughs and laughs. She loves watching me squint, trying to read my phone.

Getting old is getting old. But there is that discount at Dennys.

Steve and Tammy live in Vacaville, and they are the newest members of our transportation team. Yesterday Steve and Tammy delivered a hungry Morgan gelding to a home in Davis. The new owner tells Steve and Tammy, be sure to say hey to old Joe.

Sounds like something Randy Travis might sing. Say hey to old Joe.

Also yesterday, Jennifer delivered a neglected quarter horse gelding to his new home in Lincoln. Jennifer has been hauling horses for us since 1933.

I never got to meet the hungry Morgan gelding. Nor the neglected quarter horse. Yesterday I asked for help with unwanted horses, and there were 15 responses. Two for sure new homes. 6 can we talk about it this weekend? 7 let me figure this out, cause I am sure we can help.

    Thank you so very much.

This e-mail from a lady in Petaluma: Is it the horses you are trying to save, or the killers you are trying to punish?

    Huh?

And this from a lady in San Jose: We cannot dismiss the importance of each life.

    Well okay then.

It is Tuesday, and chores are forever. Later we could be 76 degrees. Delicious hot coffee from Dunkin Donuts. Jelly roll with melted butter made by Costco. Enjoy your new episode of Glee Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. Marvin Gaye on the oldies station...

    Dear Frens,

There is a discussion going on on the msnbc.com web-page, now that the Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal was defeated today.

    I did NOT >>>absolutely NOT

    .................................................

"OK, now that they've got this issue out of the way, let's encourage them to FINALLY bring HR 503 and S 511 to a vote. American horses are being in-humanely transported to the most brutal and violent death in Canadian, and Mexican slaughterhouses.

It's extremely important that we call our representatives now, to help Rep Jim Moran from Virginia collect signatures for the letter that he will be delivering to Nancy Pelosi asking her to bring H.R.503 to the floor for a vote immediately.

If you have not yet called your own Representative, please do so today. Tell them that you support HR 503 and ask them to add their signature to this letter in support of passing H.R.503.

This letter must be signed by your Rep. today. Sending healthy American horses,(many of them stolen), to slaughter for human consumption in Europe and Japan, is a national disgrace. If you are as yet, uninformed about this issue, you may find information at the Americans Against Horse-Slaughter website, or at theHumane Society of the United States website.

Please find your Members of Congress Here: http://www.contactingthecongress.org/

You can also reach your Members of Congress by calling:202-224-3121.

C'mon America...be a voice for the voiceless. Do a GOOD thing and be of help in this Life & Death issue. Thank you."

    ................................................

Hay, Frens, Quite a few people are there, who obviously care about what goes on in the halls of Congress. I'll try anything to get the message out. If even a few decide to help get HR 503 to the floor for a vote, then...YAY!

Here is the link to the discussion. Perhaps, if you think it might help, some of us could continue the "change-of-subject' and stir some interest in the issue of the American disgrace of horse-slaughter.

Hiya, FsOB! It's a gusty night which has followed a gloriously sunny day. Leaving work tonight, I heard a song on the radio entitled "Fall Comes to New England". The lyrics were right on target, celebrating the beauty of the season which arrives with tomorrow's Autumnal Equinox.

My sincere thanks to Debbie LA for posting the blue-link to the outstanding blog which Steve Haskin posted about Seattle Slew. I was in the infield during SS's KY Derby win. I had no idea about his life story. What an amazing life he had!

Thanks as well to Debbie LA for having posted the notice that Lentenor will be racing on 09/25/2010. I hope that some FsOB can be there for his race.

Alex, please keep us posted as to what caused Shawn Brasseaux's sudden and untimely demise at 42 years of age. Jewish Hospital in Louisville is a prestigious institution. CANDLES FOR SCOUT

Posted by: Lynne Brown at September 22, 2010 3:34 PM

annnnnd:) the second attempt for today WORKS:) Sometimes I think I can follow the directions from memory...I always chicken out tho...but apparently I missed a 'pinch of this or that' the first time trying:/ I studied it the first time, it didn't look 'right' to me...I should have listened to myself!

Getting back to Fall beginning today:) I saw my first of 2010 Praying Mantis a few days ago...so I know it's Fall now! Sometimes I've seen them when they might be just about an inch long is all, this one was more like 3 inches long...and he/she had an injured front R leg, I hope it will survive alright.

I'm always happy to see them since they signal the change in seasons for me but they scare the bejeebers outta me, too! LOL I know they're not after hoomans...they are a great help/aid to the gardens...but the way their heads swivel and follow our movement and if you 'bother' them with a branch or a pencil, say, to help move them from somewhere you'd rather they not be to somewhere more acceptable...their mouths open, too...creeps me out in a big way! They remind me somehow of a prehistoric being!

Acorns are dropping now, too:) The 'skweeerls' are busy making discoveries and scampering off to hide them for later on....the deer are finding them, too...the other night after dark I was out on my back porch and I heard 'crunching' sounds:) I was able to spot a deer out in front of my side yard enjoying a night-time snack of acorns! I recognized the sound of that crunching immediately:) As I rake leaves this time of year and bag them up to haul them away...I always make concerted efforts to toss those acorns off to the side since the critters love them so much and rely upon them for nutrients:)

Fall and Spring are my favorite of the seasons and I appreciate seeing such things as those acorns, the Mantids and watching the local deer growing their winter coats. I am so HOPING by this time next month, I might see my first Stellers Jay returning for the winter here...last year was the first time they spent with me and I enjoyed them so much! I sure hope they remember the black oil sunflower seeds and the silly lady getting so happy/excited to share with them:)

I've got a 'to-do' list staring at me, so off I go to begin this day here in the westwing....

We walked in the early , sometimes frosty mornings , and she picked grass - but her favorite was
    acorns -

We had an area of old , large oak trees , 2 or 3 acres , not fenced , and full of squirrels .

She loved the acorns most , and I helped her find them , sometimes making piles of them for her. How she loved it . It was similar to taking a child to an ice cream shop ...

One of my most treasured memories of her - and she did many things with lots of memories -
slow morning hours under the oaks , eating acorns.

She , always majestic in one of her blankets , I remember even the bend of her aristocratic Arab head and neck , and me in my scruffy barn coat
    doing her bidding ...
Rare times of joy , rare memories of beautiful yesterdays ...
    acorns ...

    Hello FOBs

I sometimes read the posts here but don't post myself. Was at the gathering of Barbaro's statue unveiling in Louisville a while back and met some of you.....enough about me. This message showed up in my email box last night. Does anyone know of any help available in the Dallas, Georgia area? It is a town about 20 miles west of Atlanta. Just post here and I'll pass on. Thank you FOBs. You are the best!! So glad you are still here.

    Hey Everyone!

A friend of a friend here at work works for a bank that is foreclosing on a large farm in Dallas, Georgia. There are several abandoned horses on the farm who will need homes. I am expecting additional information, but this is all I know right now. Do any of you know anyone or have connections with any rescue agencies that might be interested in helping these horses?

    Thanks!
    Jess

    #### Acorns....hmmmmm. We sure seem to have quite a crop of them this year. The house is flanked on all sides by Oak, Dogwood, Sasafras, and Wild Cherry....but mostly OAK.

My poor dogs are afraid to go out on the deck, for some invisible demon hurls acorns at them from within the Oak canopy. The fat quirrels are happy though, and the deer, and woodchuck.

As for me, I just sweep and gather, looking up to watch for the demon who will begin to release the leaves down upon the yard, for me to clean up. (sigh)

    So-o-o-o-o looking forward to Spring!

Hiya, FsOB! It's great to see that the Comments Board has reopened. I looked this AM and it was closed. I'm very sorry to read about the death of Pea Stone at Belmont. May she rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon her.

A reminder to all FsOB in CT, RI, MA, & NY that Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement Centre in Salem, CT, will have its annual music festival this Saturday. Tickets will be sold at the farm's gate. It is a great event which helps a super facility and it also gives one lots of chances to hang out with & spoil the horses and donkeys with grain. Brent & I plan to be there. The rain date will be Sunday the 26th.

Wishing all FsOB "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Donna in Atlanta: I hope that you're able to find folks who can help the animals in need. Please don't be a stranger here, OK?
To Otherlyn & Bobbie B: My late Siberian Huskies used to love the wild chestnuts that were plentiful in my former community. My late maternal grandfather, who had Cherokee heritage, always said that when there were more acorns than usual then it would be a severe Winter. Let's hope not!
To Marg in Maine: Yes, the past two days have been exceptionally warm and sunny, considering that the close of Summer has begun officially. I even opened some windows on the second floor this evening.
To Judy: Gosh, absolutely no apology necessary! I hope that the power is restored in your community by now. I saw this AM that there'd been strong storms in the upper central section of our continent. Please stay safe, Judy. Thank goodness this didn't happen during Winter!

Autumn arrived here with horrid 90+ degree heat today(I'm still on today, Wednesday!) and a MASSIVE thunderstorm later evening . . . very odd, hmmm. . . . But at least it did bring some pouring rains which we very much need.
Bring on the frosty mornings for me!!

BOBBIE B. - That memory of yours was a beautiful one, simply beautiful! Thank you! I'll go to sleep in a bit with that "picture" in my mind.

SANDRA - Hope you are not having 'puter problems?

OTHERLYN - Please give your doggies extra hugs from me!

ROBYN - oh yes, the wild chestnuts! We had an enormous chestnut tree in the back yard for years, until the autumn cleanup became too much for Daddy to handle. And he wanted to do everything himself!!

Has anyone ever seen CHICKIPINS?? (not sure if spelled correctly)

I must remember to tell you ladies a cute story about acorns!
What lovely memories you all have contributed this evening!

Joe for those who can't wait to get home to read:)

Thursday, September 23rd... Horses have new homes in the following places:

Martinez, which is next to the freeway.
Orangevale, which once had a Krispy Kreme, but they closed.
Pittsburgh, which is near not much.
San Luis Opispo, which is next to the ocean.
Shadow Hills, which is near Burbank.
    Sparks, which is near Reno.

In addition, there are 4 good possibilities, including Natomas, which has an A&W Root Beer stand.

All of these horses, come from other homes. Folks who can no longer provide feed and care.

I asked for help on this website. I asked for help on Facebook. No matter how many times I have gone to the bench, there is someone willing to play. I keep meeting the nicest people. A week later there is a really good chance I will have forgotten your name. But not your spirit. I will always remember how you came to the rescue of an unwanted horse.

And my goodness. On Tuesday alone, there were 11 phone calls from owners. Can you help find my horse a good home?

Also on Tuesday, 3 calls from race track trainers. They are happy to pay shipping, if we can accept their horse.

I used to think, in my judgemental know it all days, there is no excuse for giving up an animal you love. Get a job mopping floors at night. Get a job serving burgers. Anything. Do what needs to be done to keep your horse.

I met a girl yesterday, who looked to be 13 or 14. Her mom has tried everything to keep her family afloat. But there are major money problems, and so I had to find their horse a new home. A good looking gray thoroughbred gelding, who loves trail rides.

And as the girl said goodbye to her horse, another young barn mate hugged the girl, and they both cried.

This morning I was going to write about the fancy new home in San Luis Obispo. I was also going to tell you about the incredibly nice family in Martinez, right next to the freeway. Willing to take in a starving thoroughbred mare. There is an equine nutrition person from the bay area, who is helping the family bring their new mare back to life.

But all I can think of is the girl and her friend, hugging and crying, as the gray gelding is led away.

I should have joined Facebook a long time ago. Once again, that judgemental attitude, always in the way. Thank you to everyone who is helping with unwanted horses. Off to feed the hungry. A beautiful day on the way...

    Joe

I hope everyone will have a 'dine&fandy' Thursday!

Robyn. Nikita will only get worse as she gets older. The vets do not know why it gets worse but it does.
Nikita gets in the bathtub as she wants a den to feel safe in. I made a mistake with Chief in that I never crate trained him. He would hunt places to hide and in a crate he would have secure as it would have been his little den. It is not cruel to use the crate for 30 minutes to an hour. My Labs would go into their crates (door was open) and nap in the afternoon.
Chief thought if he could get outside of the house the noise would go away.
The herbel anxiety drops worked best.

Posted by: sandra at September 23, 2010 8:04 PM

    ###

Robyn H: I agree with Sandra...Murphy had long since outgrown his crate...and I never got him a bigger one..but he'd go into his crate if he felt overwhelmed in any way..it was his 'safe place' and the part about their anxieties growing more severe with age, too...Murphy was afraid of wind here...and the older he got, the more anxious he got. I talked to Dr. Jeff about that and he said it's not a good thing to allow the dog to be so anxious...and he gave me 'doggy downers' for Murphy to have in the event of storms and that awful fear presenting to him. He would pant and tremble and his heart rate was so fast, I was afraid he'd drop from a heart attack! We kept a close eye on the weather reports and Murphy wouldn't exactly 'sleep through' the storms but the tranquilizers did help him a great deal.

If Ms. Nikita is seeking comfort in the bathtub, you might consider a conversation with her doctor...:)

I have NO idea how the morning has now turned to early afternoon here in this westwing! If only time flew when we were kids like it does now...Holy Cromoly...one minute it would have been August...and the next minute Christmas Morning!! :-O Instead of days dragging on like weeks...in anticipation of exciting dates on the calendar!

    ATTENTION FOBS, ESPECIALLY IN COLORADO:

I just returned home from a town hall meeting with Tom Tancredo, a third-party candidate for governor in Colorado (long story, but in this year of wild races, he DOES have a chance).

Well, as fate would have it, I walked him to his car at the end of the meeting and, in the precious minute I had, told him about our American horses being shipped to Mexico for slaughter. Tom has a big stand on illegal aliens and I tied horse slaughter to that issue, telling him about Joe and TB Friends and how the illegals laugh at him while making millions on our beloved horses. I made sure to tell him I was not a PETA nut.

Turns out, Mr. Tancredo is HUGE horse lover and was aghast and embarrased that he knew NOTHING OF THIS !!! He said that, if elected governor, he will do every everything to deal with this issue. I am NOT a political person and it took everything in me to corner him, but trust me on this, THIS MAN WILL HELP US.

SO, FELLOW COLORADANS, if you have the chance to attend a meeting with Tom Tancredo, please take along some information to give him (I didn't even think to take any) - a copy of one of Joe's days when the illegals make fun of him would be a good start. Information on Mexican rodeos would be another, anything to give him additional information on this issue.

I have given up on Washington for now. My senators and rep are useless. I am now going to beat the bushes for candidates who will help the horses. And now, I have found one. Maybe we need to work at this from the state level. If enough governors would band together and make enough noise, we could be heard. It's worth a shot.

As for all of you in Colorado, please keep Mr. Tancredo in mind.

##Dear Fren Debbie A CO, and Frens All,

Amen to working this on the State level. How long will we spin our wheels trying to be heard by the president and by our otherrepresentatives on the Fed level?

I have long advocated doing what Rhode Island has done; that is restricting the transport of slaughterbound horses through the States. Most State legislators have not information...they do are unaware of what is happening. We have to inform them and enlist their help...especially in the States that border Canada and Mexico.

    Morning Everyone....

    Happy *FRIDAY*!!

I hope everyone will have a good day today and a wonderful weekend spent the way YOU want to spend a weekend:)

Debbie A. CO: I can't help wonder how Tom Tancredo could spend five terms in Congress and be completely unaware of horse slaughter.

California has had a law on the books since 1989 making it illegal to transport horses to slaughter on any state highways here. The law has never been enforced. When I asked why, I was told that until a law is put into place at the federal level it will never be enforced.

Right now in DC a Rep from the 8th District in VA, James Moran, is busy working to get HR 503 to a vote which in turn would, as I understand it, would put the bill before Nancy Pelosi, who essentially 'killed it' in the summer of 2008 by sending it off to the Ag Committee, where it got 'stuck' and we had to begin again in 2009.

The bill has passed the house twice, there are enough yes votes now, so it's just a matter of getting the bill on the calendar and up for a vote, which is what Representative Moran is trying to do.

I'm told the real battle will be in the senate. The house has passed the bill twice but the senate has not brought the companion bill (S 727) up for a vote in the past decade.

Check to see if your senators are co-sponsors, if they are, contact their aides and ask for help getting it out of committee.

You can find that information by accessing thomas.gov, do a bill search for S 727 and there's a place to click to identify co-sponsors. Yes, I know...working all this time with those in DC can be seriously discouraging but for now, it's our only option so let's keep on keepin' on.

And while you're at it...here's the link to the Whitehouse for Friday, 9/24:

    here's our Joe for today:

Friday, September 24th... The following e-mail was sent to several rescue groups, including us:

i work for a feedlot. i feed and take care of the horses that come in there. they are headed for slaughter. there are some very nice horses that come through there. some TBs, mares, geldings, and mares that are in foal. my mom was working with a couple rescue groups and saved a lot of really nice horses. i am 17 years old and i work 2 jobs to help my dad take care of my younger brothers and sister and also to help him take care of our horses and with what money i have left i try and save some horses and work with them and find them a home. i was wondering if your rescue group would be interested in rescuing any horses?

    thank you for your time

I confirmed this e-mail to be true, and yesterday I spoke with the girl. Her mom passed away. Her dad is disabled. Not only does the girl work two jobs, supporting her family, she helps doomed horses find new homes.

The girl says foals are often rescued, and pulled from their moms. The moms are then sent on to slaughter.

They do the same thing at the feed lot in Wilton. Heart breaking stuff.

Talk about courage. Helping her family. Helping horses. Making sure horses at her feed lot are fed and treated well. Taking the time to send out letters.

We have purchased horses from this feed lot in the past. We are going to do our best to help once again.

Coming to us later today, a race horse with the name Forest Hawk. I suppose we will call him Hawk.

Coming to us on Sunday, a badly injured race horse from Los Angeles.

Have a look at the 4 pictures below. This is a very special horse. 20 years old. A gelding who has spent his entire career helping others. And now he needs a new home. His teeth were done 7 months ago, and he is up to date on shots. This gelding is one dollar, and my phone number is 530-383-2120. He is located on the coast, south of San Francisco. We can help with transportation, within common sense distance.

Have a happy weekend. We are suppose to warm up.

    Joe

Warming up .... yep, by Sunday it's forecast to be 98 degrees in Sacramento...which means early next week we could see the dreaded 'triple digits' here in these foothills:/ Oh Joy! Well, November is just another five weeks away:)

Joe writes today of awaiting delivery of a horse called *FOREST HAWK* I researched him and found:

    Born in KY in 2004

    7 Starts, 1 - 2 - 0 Career Earnings: $10,291

    gr/father on Sire's side: Deputy Minister, and gr/grfather on Dam's Roberto...Wow!

Hopefully by early next week we can read Joe and see that *FOREST HAWK* has been or will soon be transported to one of those 'fancy new barns' where every night for the rest of his life a chocolate will be placed on his pillow:)

I hope Moran gets the bill to Pelosi , it can't hurt , and maybe it can get some publicity.

But the Senate is where it will die. We cannot get the Senate.

There are Senators from large agricultural states who will block this bill at every turn. They will bury it in committee and it will never see the light of day ...

If it is ever brought forward , one or more will put a hold on it. Even with 60 votes , they will try the hold. It's a 'gentlemens' agreement that no Senator up to now will break although it's not really law.

Agricultural interests are firmly convinced that this is the slippery slope bill ... that supporters are vegans , vegetarians , and people who want to stop all animal production for food.

They see no difference in horses and food chain animals ... it boggles the mind but there it is.

We can hope for a change with the elections , but I did that last time and nothing has changed .
Neither party is interested in taking on the ag interest.

I think that we should continue to fight as hard as we can on the national level , but also , we can try to head them off at the pass , like we did closing the US slaughter houses ,
make it harder for them in every way ,
and I think getting states to stop and or make it illegal to through - transport would be another road block .

Illinois had the will to close the slaughterhouse , perhaps they will have the will to legally enforce the law if it is enacted.
We can only hope , and it couldn't hurt to try.

A federal bill is the only thing that will really stop it for good ... and we so desperately need it ... but ... work on that .....and if you have time , work on states ,
work on anything that slows them down in anyway.

I have read that the new EU laws are making it harder , slowing down the number slaughtered. If that's true , it's great and I hope it continues to belabor them .
Let's all do what we can and one day this horror will be over.

    ###Lynne,

I did not follow Mr. Tancredo's activities when he was a rep since his district is about 250 miles removed from mine. I do know that I will hold him to his word if he is elected and, if it turns out I was wrong, then shame on me.

    But I had to try.

Feel like I ran that race, just give out, jumping up and down in my den. My dogs went nuts, not knowing what was wrong with me. Tears of JOY!
You did great Nicanor, so proud of you!

Now I know what to do for Lentenor, I have to have my Barbaro hat on that Matz and Edger signed, the Barbaro beanney baby on the TV and my gremlin in the blue white and green colors.

And good for you...I have never been 'face to face' with anyone political...have exchanged some heated emails with my Rep (who is not seeking re-election, thank God) and could so relate to your writing of how much it took for you to stand there face to face with Mr. Tancredo! Believe me, I could relate!

I'm proud of you, Debbie! And yes...I hope he will be honor his promise...and no, Debbie, if he doesn't make good his promise...it's not shame on you, but SHAME ON HIM:)

###Hay Fren Bobbie B. You may be right about Texas being a "tough nut-to-crack" However, there are States that surround Texas that could ban transport...thus land-locking those nuts.

###Fren Lynne, It is unfortunate that California is weak on enforcement. They are missing a great fiscal opportunity by not enforcing the statute and >fining the pants off

Good night, Frens all. With the NICANOR win, it had been a good day. Take a moment to enjoy the Harvest moon. Then dream sweet dreams.

    ### Some of my post above has gone missing> I'll try to fill in the blank.

...Fine the heck out of the offenders, thus thwarting the KB/transporters, and receiving revenue for the State. It is my hope that a new crop of legislators will be successful in cleaning house, and helping California revive, back into The Golden State once more. It is my understanding that Rhode Island's ban has been successful thus-far.

    ...There...hope it gets through...

    and now...goodnight.

Lynne, yes, I received a nice letter from Jenny this week, also. Very sweet Soldier! Am going to try and keep something in mail to her from time to time. Someone posted earlier, I think, about their dog and storms (I've been off work a few days at home doin' stuff and just had time to skim the last few days of posts). Anyhew, there is a calming "jacket" available now. Have seen it in the Best Friends monthly magazine and a few other magazines. Theory being if dog is gently encased in the jacket (and it kind of just resembles any sort of doggie coat), it feels secure and much less fearful of storms, etc. Might be worth researching.

Yay, Nicanor! Just watched his race on You Tube. Good luck to Lentenor.

Deborah, good work with Tancredo. Those are they types of opportunities that can provide valuable info.

    Well, back to 'stuff'.

I hope the weekend will afford yole some good time spent un-winding from your week...getting your 'to-do's' done and time spent with those you love and they who love you back:)

Debbie LA: I read the article you posted...help for businesses today is a good thing...I think if 'depreciation' can be taken then it does encourage dollars be spent...not just on horses but equipment...and those horses at places like the Keeneland sales go for so much money, it's doubtful those horses would end up in peril soon...and hopefully, S 727 might be voted on and no worries for them ever! I can dream, anyway.

Bobbie B: You must by now be going to begin your third week of travel? So you'll be home maybe by this time next weekend? I hope you're enjoying yourself and always glad to see you check in here!

Here's your Saturday link to the Whitehouse, too:

I've got no 'exciting' plans for today...but must be sure to water outdoors and be sure the 'ponds' have water in them and the coveted:) Black Oil Sunflower feeders are filled...'cause though they are turning somersaults in GLEE over finding the Acorns...they STILL DEMAND THOSE SEED DISHES BE FILLED PLEASE, LADY! :) Recently, I'd gotten busy indoors and not gotten out back fast enough...I heard an odd CRASHING and then 'nails scratching on a blackboard' sound...I went to investigate and got a glimpse of a 'skweeerl' sliding down my kitchen window!! LOL! He/she had been working HARD to 'alert' me to the fact the dishes were both EMPTY!! It may be true that squirrels aren't necessarily the 'brightest stars in the sky' when trying to avoid being run over by our cars....but I am here to tell you..when it comes to FOOD and the DISHES that FOOD belongs IN...they are Little Einstein's!! :)

We're beginning the 'warm-up' today and by Tuesday are going to be experiencing some triple-digit temps..so I'll be extra careful about the water situation this coming week.

    Goodmorning Frens All,

It is a beautiful, crisp sunny morning, here in Michigan. People are oo-ing and ahh-ing the expectation of autumn's colorful show. However, I lament the loss of the tree frogs' song.

All of the critters in my little corner of thisotherplace look fat and ready for the next two seasons rushing upon us. I take comfort in the fact that they seem prepared. When the "Little-Fat-Monk," (our resident woodchuck's) appearances cease, that will be the signal to bundle up and dig in. For now, let's enjoy the show.

    Looking forward to Spring...

Hiya, FsOB! What a weekend it's been. My thanks to Debbie LA for the blue-link to the video of Nicanor's win at Belmont on Friday. How exciting to watch his progress on the turf, I really think the Nicanor was meant for the turf. His bay coat was gleaming, wasn't it? What a beauty he is! Is it my imagination or is Nicanor much bigger than Barbaro was?

Yesterday was an awesome day at the Michell Farm Equine Retirement Centre in Salem, CT! I wish that Lou Ann & Bobbie could have joined me, thank you both for sending your good wishes from PA & NC. The donkeys are no longer there, they went to live at either their previous or a new home. But what a great time I had, spoiling Easy, Tommy, Gryphon, & Beauty. Easy & Tommy were separated from the other horses, due to their timidity. Thus, I spoiled them in particular. Tommy is huge and Easy is much smaller, but they are particular friends. That place is truly a blessed terrain!

Alex, thanks for posting the photo of Barbaro's shoes. His feet seemed much smaller than I had anticipated. My thanks to Debbie LA for posting the link to the photo of Barabro, which was taken following his return home from the Kentucky Derby win. He is certainly what came to link us all together, isn't he? Best wishes and may each of you have "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Otherlyn: I am on I-95 in RI each work day and am pleased to report that I've only seen one horse trailer and it was quite obvious that it was not a slaughter-bound one. But thanks for informing me about the State law, because if I ever see a questionable trailer, I'll call the State police. I loved your description of "Little Fat Monk" (or Man) in your yard. ####

Makes me wish I were in a SRSLY different financial situation..i.e., just won the LOTTERY..I'd buy land...lotsa land, hire people who know how to take care of them...all I know is to brush them and feed 'em carrots and give them about a zillion KISSES:)

Monday, September 27th... Over the weekend I got to see Alice, who lives in Sacramento. It has been more than a year since Alice adopted the gelding Topper from us. Alice has recent pictures of Topper to show me. Alice says: These are terrible pictures. Sorry. Everybody asks if Joe Shelton took them.

    Well golly gee.

Today I spare you my pictures. Instead I am showing 3 horses from the feed lot in Fallon. All 3 mares below are believed to be pregnant. We must find new homes in the next few days.

Top Left: This Paint mare is very friendly. She is $450.00

Bottom Left: A gentle thoroughbred mare. She too is very friendly. $480.00

Bottom Right: A young Paint mare. $450.00

At the feed lot in Wilton, (no cameras allowed) there is a black thoroughbred mare who is also pregnant. 8 years old, and her cost is $450.00

At the feed lot in Wilton, a former race horse gelding with an old ankle injury. He is 7. His cost is $400.00

And from Wilton, a young thoroughbred filly only recently broke to ride. She is bay, 16 hands, and friendly. The filly was too slow for the race track. $400.00

From both Fallon and Wilton, there are transportation charges. Obviously more expensive to ship from Fallon.

My number is 530-383-2120. If you have room for one more horse, please give me a call.

Bonkers is the theme for September. A crazy month, and I am happy October is almost here. I cannot do a new website for tomorrow. (the crowd stands and roars) Earning the big bucks at another ranch. Back and forth to Wilton I go. Chores are forever on my ranch. Darkness is coming much earlier, and supper feeding now begins at 4:30. The last several nights we have been late with evening feed. Which is fine, because the big moon lights us up like a football stadium.

I will return Wednesday morning, to share with you life from our goofy little ranch in Woodland. To all of you helping us find new homes for unwanted horses, I thank you very much. Stay cool. An orange gatorade kind of day.

Reading Alex's posts up-top R of this page...I just wanna throw up!! It's like being there with him and all the HORSES...OMG!!

'Signed Paper' ..... I can't write here what I think of that...I'm afraid I'd make the porn spams look like a child's fairy tale by comparison! And the one who NEEDS BUTE...OMG!

Jonna told me once when an animal is nearing it's end of life and the ending is horrific....endorphins are somehow released and they are in a 'twilight' sort of state...it's their body's way of protecting them as best it can...I sure hope these horses all have good working systems for the release of those endorphins! I SO HATE this business and all the people involved in it....I hope you ALL rot in HELL for eternity....and I hope NONE of you are graced with endorphins to make your time spent there in the LEAST BIT TOLERABLE!

Alex..honest to God...I don't know how you manage being there....I know you're researching, I certainly do NOT think you're there for pleasure...but I don't know HOW you do it! I'd be in jail....I'd be in a 'nut-house' they'd drag me out of there kicking and screaming in a straight-jacket!

Dear God...Please hold all these horses in your arms...please carry them...please surround them in Your Love and Peace...please help US to HELP THE HORSES!

God take these horses into your care, love them as we do, show them how much we care. God have mercy on us for what we've done.

Hiya, FsOB! I concur with Lynne B.: if I had won the PowerBall drawing on Saturday PM, I'd be buying those gorgeous horses whose pictures Joe Shelton shared today. (Thank you, Debbie LA, for the blue-link!) For some reason, the paints always appeal to me.

Well, it's a foggy night here & to quote Alex's term, I am knackered. Wishing everyone "ACN" and may we all rise in the morning to seize the new day. Peace, Robyn

To Lynne B: Thanks for the blue-link to the candles for Harriette's Scout. I lit two there this AM.
To Carleen: Please try to stay cool in the extreme heat, OK?
To Joan R: I hope that your gallbladder discomfort has abated as you await surgery. ####

Alex, Thank you for posting the "new-old" photo of BARBARO.

    ...keenly missing his presence.

After reading Joe at TB Friends with the pregnant mares in a feed lot, and Alex report of New Holland horses. I am really down, heart sick with what's going on with all the horses. On the DB with rescues it's a dog and cat fight. We need to work together, yes we need to help the horses. But we also need to stop the good old boys who think slaughter is the right thing to do. We have a vote in just 6 weeks, we have to ask our friends and family to stop the same old good old boys to be ousted out and get someone to stand up for the transport of the horses across the boarders. We can do this! We Can!
We have done allot for Barbaro and we can do this! We have to work together, but we CAN! And think we will! Enough is enough. Please Iet's work to get the bad guys out and maybe the horses can be saved

Hiya, FsOB! It's a warm, moist, & muggy morning here on the banks of the Thames. It feels more akin to morning in New Orleans, but there's not a beignet in sight!

I concur with Debbie LA's heartfelt sentiments which she expressed last PM. I recall an old adage "money is the root of all evil". By the way, one of the clipping services which I subscribe to reported yesterday that Congress may go into recess early (this Friday) so that the incuments can campaign with greater ease! So please, everyone, try to attend any local campaign events and raise some questions about horse slaughter and about BLM policies.

Wishing all of you a safe & productive Tuesday. Gotta dash! Peace, Robyn
