    Barbaro Updates: 1000

    updates are now here.

Update 6060: A day off today, so going kayaking!

Update 6059: Sue McMullen provides a final day wrap-up from Royal Ascot:

Starspangledbanner helped put Ballydoyle back on the Royal Ascot map, annihilating the field in the six furlong Group 1 Jubilee Stakes, the third leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, on the final day of a thrilling Royal Ascot 2010.

Son of the awesome Choisir who bagged a remarkable double at Royal Ascot in 2003 when he won both the Group 1 Kings Stand Stakes and the Golden Jubilee, Starspangledbanner is a Ballydoyle import from Australia and though he isn't quite the same strapping specimen as 'Dad', junior is also chestnut and showed the same kind of electrifying speed.

The very game filly Fleeting Spirit finished fourth, having led the group on the far side and probably thought she had won the race but Starspangledbanner was followed home by Society Rock and in third, Kinsale King, the US raider who ran very well and with his colourful racing gear and accompanied by a pony to the start, gave the race a great international flavour. Carl O'Callaghan is considering keeping his charge this side of the Atlantic for an attempt on the July Cup at Newmarket next month, the fourth leg in the Global Sprint Challenge series.

Clive Brittain is considering a tilt at the Kentucky Derby for the Listed Chesham Stakes victor Zaidan, a colt he's always thought highly of but until today didn't know just how good he might turn out to be. Ridden by Seb Sanders, the son of Street Cry was very unsettled before and after the race and hopefully the experience might have taught him something positive about the racing game. Although still a baby, he'll need to learn to relax if he's to start clocking up air miles next year but Clive Brittain was one of the first European trainers to head across the Pond and knows just what it takes to keep horses happy when shuttling around the globe.

Harbinger bagged the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes, giving Sir Michael Stoute his second victory of the week following the success of the gorgeous grey filly Strawberrydaiquiri, and earning himself a quote of 7-2 second favourite for the King George behind his stablemate Workforce. However, no definite plans have been made and the Stoute team will discuss all the options with the owners, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing.

Approximately 60,000 bottles of champagne will have been consumed during the most fabulous week of top class international racing, some of it consumed by the 1,000 accredited international media. The US raiders are becoming a regular feature, albeit a very small number and hopefully more will come. Kenny McPeek, whose Caspar's Touch finished third behind Zaidan in the Chesham Stakes and Tiz My Time ran third in yesterday's Albany Stakes for fillies, said the meeting had been a test-drive for him to figure out what kind of colt or filly to bring over here in future.

"It's a learning experience, but a happy one, he said. "We really enjoy the higher-end meets. I'd like to bring horses here every year. This is an easy trip for us, all the horses came over fine, they eat well and ship well. The Australians have come a lot farther than we have. It think it's a bit of a misconception about the travel because the Europeans come our way all the time and you don't hear complaints from them. We should come back this way more. It's not all about the money - it's about the sport."

Kenny has some regrets about the way they decided to ride Noble's Promise in the St James's Palace Stakes.

"After the race Kieren (Fallon) and I wished we'd just let him go at his own pace, because he broke well. He was on the inside, so when he was eased out for a run the colt thought he was going left-handed, which he's done all his career. Kieren had to rearrange him and get him to curl back right. You can't unring a bell and fifth wasn't bad, but now what we were looking for."

As he says, it's all a learning experience just as it has been for the Europeans when they race in the US and Kenny also had his Royal Ascot baptism in the fashion stakes, hiring a morning suit for the occasion, complete with top hat. "The first suit didn't fit too good, but I changed it." An experience shared all too often on this side of the Atlantic. Roll on 2011.

Update 6058: Eight ridden for Michael Pino at Fair Hill this morning. We had a few horses breezing, and a few went to the gate for some schooling, so a busy morning. All went well, so it was a good morning's work. Warm weather again too.

It's the last day of Royal Ascot, Sue McMullen will provide an update later today.

It's a light schedule of Graded Stakes this weekend in the US: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies.

Update 6057: Another seven ridden this morning at Fair Hill for Michael Pino. And a lovely morning for riding horses. All went nicely as we are now getting ready to watch some World Cup football!

Last night I caught up with Jeannine Edwards, to discuss my book. Jeannine is writing the forward and also gave me feedback on the first part of the book. I met Jeannine at the farm where she keeps her horse, Ashkal Way.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6056: Day 3 update from Royal Ascot from Sue McMullen:

A perfect summer's day, not a cloud in the sky, pleasantly warm without being too hot and humid, provided the perfect backdrop to Ladies' Day at Royal Ascot.

Feature race on the third day of the meeting is the Ascot Gold Cup, founded in 1807, run over two miles and a half miles. The ultimate test of a horse's stamina and ability to settle during the race, this year's Gold Cup threatened to lack quite the interest of the last few years due to the absence of one individual, the incomparable Yeats who made this race his own with four consecutive victories, a feat that is unlikely to be repeated.

But today's race provided its own fairy story with the former hurdler Rite of Passage fighting out a thrilling finish with the Ballydoyle representative Age of Aquarius trying to emulate his former stablemate and retain the crown for O'Brien. Jumpers of this calibre are certainly not slow, proved today by Rite of Passage who looks likely to head to Australia for the Melbourne Cup with trainer Dermot Weld bidding for more success down under. Age of Aquarius was unsettled in the paddock with O'Brien himself walking the horse out to the track but he appeared to settle well in the race for Johnny Murtagh and at one stage appeared to be the winner but the stamina of the six year-old Rite of Passage just proved too much for the four year-old who battled very gamely all the way to the line. Murtagh was delighted with his performance and it might indicate a change of fortune for the Ballydoyle runners who have lacked sparkle so far this week.

Kieron Fallon is back on the winning board at the meeting following his photofinish victory aboard Afsare in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes over one and a quarter miles, providing Luca Cumani with his first Royal Ascot victory since 1997. A big favourite with Fallon, Afsare fought all the way to the line upsides the Queen's runner Quadrille but just got his nose in front and in doing so denied Her Majesty a popular royal victory, always a crowd pleaser. But many were equally delighted to see Fallon back on form at this hugely prestigious meeting and even before the race, his enthusiasm for the horse was evident in the way he patted and stroked his neck as they walked around the parade ring.

Hibaayeb gave Frankie Dettori and Godolphin their second victory at the meeting when she proved too strong for her rivals in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes, over a mile and a half. Disappointing in the Guineas the filly returned to form in the Prix Saint-Alary and the decision was then made to bypass the Oaks and aim for Royal Ascot. Showing an impressive turn of foot to dismiss her rivals, the filly's victory put the wattage back in Dettori's beaming smile and an opportunity for the inevitable flying dismount after a Group victory.

Approve won the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes for the 'babies', run over five furlongs, by putting his greater experience and his devestating turn of foot to good use. The Britannia Stakes, a Heritage Handicap over a mile, gave Micheal Hills his second win at this year's Royal Ascot, with the brave Ransom Note holding on to the lead. Described by Hills as a 'steering job' the horse is a big favourite at home as he is so easy to ride.

Update 6055: Seven ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. It was a gorgeous morning for riding horses. A couple of mine were a little "fractious" leaving the barn, but once they got out there were very good. All in all a great start to the day.

The highlight of yesterday was the win for Barbaro's brother Nicanor: Will Nicanor's Victory Serve as Confidence Booster?

    And please keep calling.

Update 6054: Day 2 update from Royal Ascot from Sue McMullen:

Warmer weather with a cooling breeze resulted in faster going on the second day at Royal Ascot with the course record broken in two races.

First of these was Mark Johnston's Rainfall, another one for girl power as she became the first filly for many years to claim the Group 3 Jersey Stakes, run over 7 furlongs, and she did it in style battling her way to the line and beating the favourite, Red Jazz.

Arguably the most thrilling race of the day was the titanic battle between the girls in the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes with Strawberrydaiquiri under champion jockey Ryan Moore and last year's heroine Spacious, under Johnny Murtagh, attempting to retain her crown in this race.

Two brave fillies fighting all the way to the line with neither showing any sign of giving up. Nip and tuck to the wire, it was the type of race where it is a pity one has to lose but it was the elegant grey filly Strawberrydaiquiri who got her head in front.

The big battalions were out in force for the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes, first run in 1862 with a list of equine luminaries gracing the honour's roll, including in recent years the flying filly Ouija Board and the ill-fated Dubai Millenium.

Andre Fabre's Byword, favourite for the race, won in impressive fashion and paid a huge compliment to Europe's star mare, Goldikova, as he finished behind her at Longchamp. Henry Cecil's Twice Over followed him home by half a length after a troubled run but you can't take anything away from the victor, ridden in only his first race in the UK by talented young jockey Maxime Guyon. What a baptism on the international stage and huge credit to Fabre for giving young talent opportunities to ride in the big races. He said after the race that he had every confidence the horse could win and was more concerned about his inexperienced pilot, so all the more impressive for giving him the chance. Both the winner and the runner up are owned by Prince Khaled Abdullah, one of Europe's most prominent supporters of the game and a popular figure over here.

Frankie Dettori and Godolphin enjoyed their first win of the meeting with Invisible Man claiming the Royal Hunt Cup at 28/1 and smashing another course record. Godolphin has been a bit invisibile itself of late so this might mark a change in fortune.

Favourite for the race, Maqaasid looked very impressive in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes for fillies. Trained by John Gosden, Maqaasid showed an electric turn of foot going 59 and one to beat a brave Meow under Johnny Murtagh, so if they can keep her relaxed and enjoying the job, she is one to watch.

One time favourite for the Oaks, Timepiece, dropped down in class to win the Listed Sandringham Handicap over a mile and notch up another victory for Prince Khaled Abdullah. With a losing run of three races behind her, hopefully this will have boosted her confidence and she put Henry Cecil, beaten on the line with Twice Over, in the winners' enclosure, always a great place to be at Royal Ascot.

Update 6053: Another busy morning at the Pino barn at Fair Hill this morning. I had eight sets. We had a couple of sets do a bit of gate schooling, one 2yo to get a gate card, the other was at the gate for the first time. All went well and all galloped nicely.

It is day 2 of Royal Ascot, and we should be getting a report later from Sue McMullen.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6052: Day 1 update from Royal Ascot from Sue McMullen:

Day one at Royal Ascot and the feast we had anticipated certainly lived up to expectations with stellar performances in the Group 1 races.

Superstar racemare Goldikova gained her ninth Group 1, denying Paco Boy a consecutive victory in the Queen Anne Stakes. The very game Paco Boy has his own style of racing and has to be produced very late. Held up in traffic, he eventually saw daylight and unleashed his electric turn of foot with a very brave attempt to reach the mare but she just found a bit more and held on to the line. Richard Hannon, trainer of Paco Boy, said they were very proud of their own star boy and it was no disgrace to go down fighting to such a fabulous mare.

Olivier Peslier, Goldikova's jockey, deployed the best tactics to beat Paco Boy by going early and forcing the Richard Hannon colt to make up too much ground with his late run.

Aiden O'Brien's Rip Van Winkle appeared to need the race but the yard is out of form with non of the Ballydoyle runners showing real sparkle on the track.

Equiano was a dazzling winner of the Kings Stand Stakes, the Group 1 sprint over a very stiff five furlongs Despite stumbling out of the stalls and almost going down on his knees he nevertheless made up ground very fast and once he hit the front nothing could catch him. Winner of this race two years ago when he was trained in Spain, Equiano is now trained at Newmarket by the popular Barry Hills and ridden by his son Michael.

Aussie sprinters have dominated the Group 1 Kings Stand Stakes for some years, with no British-trained runner winning since 2004 but the tradition ended today and neither of the Aussie raiders looked threatening. Perhaps Nicconi is not quite in the same league as the illustrious Takeover Target, Miss Andretti or Choisir or maybe he had an off day but he also looked as if he could get further.

Canford Cliffs confirmed his Irish Guineas form against Makfi, winner of the English equivalent, by storming home in the Group 1 St James Palace stakes, beating his very tough stablemate Dick Turpin. Winner of last year's Coventry Stakes in emphatic style, Canford Cliffs has a tremendous burst of speed and jockey Richard Hughes had every confidence the Hannon-trained colt would win today, with a little luck in running. Poor Dick Turpin keeps finding one too good and seems destined to be the bridesmaid but he is a very classy, attractive individual and will have his day.

Kenny McPeek's Noble's Promise finished a creditable fifth but never looked threatening at any stage during the race. There is much admiration here for Kenny to have brought the Kentucky Derby fifth to Royal Ascot to take on Europe's finest and hopefully it will encourage more trainers from the US to follow in his footsteps.

The in-form Hannon yard unleashed another star in the making with their two year-old Strong Suit winning an action-packed Group 1 Coventry Stakes by a nod in a photo finish In only his second run, Strong Suit was barged about and had to weave his way through the field, an impressive performance for a mere rookie, and once he saw daylight he flew home to catch Barry Hills' Elzaam on the line. The latter ran a bit green and will certainly learn from today's experience but Strong Suit looks to be a very impressive horse and earned himself a 10-1 quote for next year's Guineas.

Update 6051: Eight ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill, so a little longer morning's work. All eight of mine went nicely for a straightforward start to the day.

Royal Ascot is now underway, and Goldikova got things going with another Group 1 win against the boys: Goldikova reigns in Royal Ascot opener.

Here is this week's ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Goldikova, Kip Deville, ABR radio, Bob Hatfield, Andy Durnin, Lisa Grimm, The Jacksons.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6050: Seven ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. Ant it was another warm morning for training horses. All mine went nicely. One also breezed 3/8ths in company, and they both went well.

The highlight from yesterday was the thrilling win of Zenyatta, who remains perfect at 17 races. It was not an easy win, and it did look like she was going to struggle a little to overhaul the leader, but inside the 1/16th pole she seemed to find one extra gear to win almost comfortably: Zenyatta shows heart of a champion in Vanity.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6049: Five ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. While it was a short and straightforward morning's work, it was ridiculously hot.

The highlight yesterday was the return to form of Rachel Alexandra, who made light work of her first win for the year: Rachel Alexandra runs off with Fleur de Lis.

Today Zenyatta will look to make history: Zenyatta shoots for record third Vanity win.

Update 6048: Seven ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. And all mine went nicely for a straightforward start to the day. Lots of World Cup chatter this morning at the track. A few of us were wearing our England shirts, oddly no one seemed to be sporting a USA shirt ? It should be a fun game this afternoon!

And also this afternoon Rachel Alexandra is running on a busy day at Churchill Downs which includes the Grade 1 Stephen Foster: Blame, Rachel Alexandra top Stephen Foster card.

Update 6047: Eight ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. And a lovely morning for training horses. All mine went nicely for a longer but straightforward morning's work.

Good news regarding racing at Royal Ascot next week, from Sue McMullen:

Good news for racing fans across the 'Pond' who have heard so much about the Royal meeting but had few opportunities to get a real taste of its unique character. For the first time TVG and HRTV will cover the meeting. TVG is setting up a studio at Ascot and HRTV is sending a crew to the course and will broadcast coverage from its Santa Anita studio.

With the addition of live coverage in Australia it means that Royal Ascot will now be broadcast from the west coast of America to the eastern seaboard of Australia.

For sheer spectacle Royal Ascot is hard to beat and it will be interesting to see quite what our media colleagues from TVG and HRTV make of it all, but if you cast aside the unrivalled opulence, glitz, glamour, posturing celebs and wannabees who go merely to see and be seen, this is the week's best Flat racing in Europe, a week of championship, Group racing at the highest level with an international line-up.

We have a feast of racing to look forward to and away from the track those vital last minute preparations are underway. The finery is being dusted down, hired or puchased as everybody wants to look their absolute best. Humans are as much on parade as the horses but despite their dazzling array of colour, designer bling and haute couture, it is the magnificent, sleek, unadorned Thoroughbreds that always steal the show. The human pageantry is a mere sideshow to the clash of equine titans on the track.

Not long to wait and ladies are already practising that special technique required to avoid the clash of large hats as they encounter one another in the confined doorways of bathrooms. Without due vigilence this can resemble two fighting stags locking antlers. All part of life at Royal Ascot.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6046: Five ridden so far this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. I have two more to go, but since I am on break I thought I would use the time to do today's update. One of the one's I have ridden so far was a little fractious, but we survived. The remaining two I have to ride are babies, it will be there second day to the track.

2 pm today we have our final ABR radio show for this Triple Crown series. We will review the Belmont and the entire Triple Crown this year, as well as discuss the upcoming races for Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra. Should be another fun show: Alex Brown Racing on the radio.

This weekend Zenyatta runs in the Vanity and is looking for a threepeat in the race, as well as surpassing the modern day record for consecutive wins: Zenyatta Breezes Six Furlongs in Vanity Prep. Rachel Alexandra returns in the Fleur de Lis: Rachel to Start in Fleur de Lis, Not Foster.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6045: Seven ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. One of mine breezed an easy half mile, and went nicely. Four of the horses I rode were "babies", 2yos. Two went to the track for the first time, as we received a new shipment of horses in the last few days. All went nicely.

Last night I had dinner with the Jacksons to discuss the progress of my Barbaro book. They seemed pretty happy with the direction of the book, I also gave them a draft chapter to read. Hope they like it!

    And please keep calling.

Update 6044: Six ridden today for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. A gorgeous morning for riding horses at Fair Hill. Two of mine went to the gate for a little schooling. One also breezed a half a mile. Quite a busy morning, but just a great morning to be out there.

Here is this week's Facebook Group e-mail: Drosselmeyer, Mike Smith, Fly Down, First Dude, Bill Mott, Joe Drape, Travers Stakes, Epsom Derby, Workforce, ABR radio, Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra, Tim Woolley, Kansas City, 4,000.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6043: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update - Triple Crown wrap-up/World Cup kickoff edition.

It may have been a pokey Belmont, but it was nice to see Bill Mott add a Triple Crown win to his resume, and we've got summer and fall racing to look forward to. WinStar farm will have to decide how to manage their two classic winners, Super Saver and Drosselmeyer, over the next few months, but it's certainly a good problem to have - even if the idea of either one competing with Zenyatta in the Breeders' Cup Classic seems rather beyond the realm of possibility. One does hope that Uptowncharlybrown, who finished fifth, gets another chance to prove his talent (as well as earn some money for his connections), after his odd disqualification to last in the race after losing a weight pad. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin explained how it happened, and blames himself - it's definitely not a fun way to lose $30,000.

And Zenyatta does not seem too concerned about possible rivals - she had an easy workout this week for her shot at a threepeat in the Vanity, which would give her win number 17. The big mare's presence in the race has limited the field - St Trinians is the only horse in the field likely to give Zenyatta much of a workout, although she's coming into the race off a poor effort last time out, in the Big Cap - still, someone has to be second.

And while we know that Rachel Alexandra will be racing somewhere on Saturday, which race her connections plan to go for is still up in the air. The Stephen Foster is coming up a tough race - Blame is on fire, and General Quarters seems to be getting into a good rhythm. Arson Squad, Macho Again and Giant Oak are also good horses, and while I believe we will see Rachel return to her best, that may still be a little bit down the road. However, she would get an attractive weight break in the race, so that's no doubt a consideration.

Of course, as we have previously mentioned, just about everything else happening on Saturday is eclipsed by the US taking on England in the World Cup; regardless of what the British press might suggest, we're actually reasonably evenly-matched - the two teams have similar difficulties in defense (although at least we have Tim Howard in goal), and a tendency to rely one one or two key players up front. I'd say the odds of both teams finishing the game with ten men are higher than a runaway score either way, but I'd love to see us pull out a win - and continue in that spirit well beyond the group stage.

With the World Cup, a new job and a variety of other side projects taking over, posting will be lighter than usual for a while - but follow along on Twitter for the latest commentary.

Update 6042: Six ridden this Monday morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. And a gorgeous morning for riding horses. The humid weather we have experienced the last few days has at last cleared out. All six of mine went nicely.

While the Triple Crown is now behind us, we will have some interesting racing this upcoming weekend. Both Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra are scheduled to race. Rachel worked this morning at Churchill Downs an easy half mile. Rachel's race is still to be determined, Zenyatta is pointing to the Vanity: Zenyatta Assigned 129 Pounds for Vanity.

    And please keep calling.

    Good morning Frens,

Thank goodness for the blessing of a relatively safe Belmont weekend. Congratulations to the beautiful and swift DROSELMEIER and his connections.I had hoped for a clean record of no breakdowns, but (I think) there might have been one in one of the races after the Belmont. I heard one of the HRTV (or HTV) commentators mention that one of the runners broke down...and the otherone say, "Oh, I didn't see that..." I waited for an update, but as usual, they didn't mention it again.

An interesting person mentioned was Donald Disney, owner of FIRST DUDE. He is donating a portion of FD's winnings to the Grayson JockeyClub fund, for Laminitis research. How good it is to see another owner stepping up to give something back. A tip-of-the-hat, and a smile to Mr Disney.

BARBARO is always in my heart, but I seem to be thinking of him even more lately...remembering what was, and what could have been...striving to look forward to even more good to be done, for the Love and Legacy of our beloved champion.

Keep calling, and please visit the DB. There are many needs and opportunities listed there.

    Have a beautiful week.

    Loving the Frens; Loving BARBARO.

    Your FOB Fren, O

God Bless JOE @ TB Friends, the man's heart is simply made of gold and the visual I got from today's post brought me to laughter.

You all are simply the best, love you all, and prayers and hugs for those especially walking the rugged path just now.

    much love,
    Lou Ann

And always in loving memory of FOB Chief!

Hiya, FsOB! My thanks to our Debbie LA for the blue-link to Jeo Shelton's blog. Yes, today's blog was truly a riot, I encourage anyone in need of a laugh to read it.

I have a news flash that has probably already been posted on the Discussion Board, but just in case it hasn't, here you are. It was news to me. On Saturday, in between one of the races at Belmont, a televised message came on the big TV screen in the middle section of the grassy area adjacent to the post results board. It was a messsage Edgar Prado, announcing an autograph session which will be held at Belmont on Saturday, 06/26/2010, in honour of the Barbaro Fund! Are any FsOB planning to attend? I was just overcome with emotion, seeing the televised footage of Barbaro & Edgar on 05/06/2006.

During the preps for one race, there was a special event. It was very exciting to see the crowd's reaction to the two NYPD officers aboard their horses, going up the track from the finish line toward the home stretch. These officers and their horses foiled the infamous would-be Times Square bomber. The crowd greeted them with great NY-styled gusto!

And speaking of gusto, at one point during the Belmont Stakes, our Lorraine's horse made a surge. Wow, you should have heard the crowd roar!

Thank you for your greeting fren carleen. Hope you have a wonderful day too. Each day is wonderful knowing there are like-hearted-mindless-muddlers who are doing GOOD in an often lonely an and cruel world. We wear the scorn of the heartless as a badge of honour. Yes?

    Morning Everyone...

Gosh...been kinda 'quiet' here for a few days I see...we gotta get some 'action on this bus' :)

Bobbie B is at the beach soaking up a change of scenery and hopefully enjoying her time away from the 'norm'.

Not so much going on here..but lots going on so I was away from this 'house' too, for awhile.

The birdies and 'skweeerls' are all just 'dine&fandy'..the weather here has finally become more 'summer like'...over the weekend, we hit the low 90's..and it felt like the low one-hundred-ninties there for a number of hours!! So many cool days and then suddenly HOT always takes a bit of getting accustomed to!

Terrible weather over the weekend in Ohio...so much damage from the tornadoes and so sorry for the ones who lost lives!

The Gulf of Mexico continues to be ravaged by oil...not 'ravished' as I heard quoted by someone...I honestly haven't watched News since late last week...so am not completely informed this morning....I just know I see the live cam showing that gunk spewing forth and I think yesterday was day 50 in this saga:( I pray sooner than later the oil leak can be FINALLY stopped and clean-up can take place and I suppose all kinds of other maladies unfold:( i.e., long-term health issues, lost businesses, homes and lives beginning all over again finding new ways to keep going. The wetlands and life within...that is what sickens me the most.

I loved Joe this morning:) No WONDER his 'score card' for Charlie was such a mess...I got confused reading of all his names, too! Hopefully soon, he'll find his once and for all, 'forever home' and life won't be so confusing for Charlie anymore...he must feel by now, that he is somehow on loan to people..away at different 'camps' even until he find his way back up Joe's long driveway.

Voting taking place here in CA today for the Primary Election..am so HOPING we might get a respite from all the damnable campaign commercials...I made my mind up early on to NOT vote for either of the two who have spent so much money it's disgraceful! I spoke with an employee at the local Voter's Registrar Office one day last week and she said I wasn't the only one she'd heard that from.

I hope everyone has a good day today...help some horses if you're able.

This Thursday, June 10, at 8p on Discovery Channel a special all about the Gulf Oil Spill...in case anyone might want to watch...it should be very informative, I think.

Of course I lost it while watching NBC Nightly News tonight...it's so SAD and it makes me so ANGRY..the innocents...all for the sake of frakken money and greed!! :( Do I think for one moment BP 'shivesagit' of course not!! All they care about is their stockholders and themselves...except of course for the locals who are employees...how, I wonder, do any of them show their faces locally anymore? What a mess..what a shame...The CEO of BP .... "I want my life back." :/ I see their spot on TV and I want to throw a brick through the TV screen! He says they will pay for all 'legitimate' claims..I wonder how long it might take for their attorneys to decide claims classify as 'legitimate' or not..OMG!

Joan: I buy Dawn, been using it for gosh lots of years now...that $1.00 offer to help clean up wildlife has been on-going, I think even before this spill...it's really good stuff! Best de-greaser next to plain old ammonia I have ever used!

Sorry for ranting, Family...it just hurts my heart so much:(

This is update on Molly...10 year lab...who had surgery for ruptured disc...please pray for them...this is their family...too.

When I called last night, Molly was covered with 2 blankets, had her head on a pillow, and was resting comfortably. She was not interested in eating, but that was not a concern. All vital signs were good.

This morning they told me she "ate heartily" which is, of course, a very good sign of progress. All her vitals are still good. The tech didn't say, but I would imagine if they can get her up today they will. She needs to start moving around before long so that her lungs don't become an issue.

THANK YOU ALL for your thoughts and prayers!!! ~Roz

The dog supply house SitStay.com is having a one week sweepstakes and the winner will receive $1,000 worth of products donated to their favorite 501c rescue by them as well as win $500 worth of products for them selves. I just entered and it took about 90 seconds! It's easy just go to their website and click on the sweepstakes link. Good deal to help the pups.

Posted by: joan roya at June 9, 2010 2:24 PM

Joan, good news about Molly - two blankets and her head on a pillow creates a loving picture! I've fed Pedigree for quite awhile since learning of their donations for shelter pets. I love the commericals with David Duchovny's voice - the message usually brings me to tears, though. There's an ad in a current magazine I cut out and have at my desk; it reads (with a picture of a terrier mix) "He may be small, but you should see his heart. Shelter dogs aren't broken. They've simply experienced more life than other dogs. If they were human, we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write. The ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Do not pity a shelter dog. Adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness by your side." The whole ad is awesome but that last line really gets me.

Lynne, your anger at the BP coverage is shared by many. I thought the same thing the very first time I heard the phrase "legitimate claims" - that adjective is their loophole.

Most of NW Florida's beaches now have tar balls/splotches coming onto its sugar white sands. But, never fear. BP has dispatched crackerjack clean up crews. Why, just the other day, the front page of our newspaper pictured one such crew - all seven workers.
My understanding is, the first outfit hired (and now fired) by BP had a schedule of 15 minutes of work, 15 minutes of shaded rest. Some took 2 hour lunches when they weren't standing around chatting on their phones, ogling the babes or resting in the shade. (Don't know why they aren't being worked from sunup till about 10:00 and then back again about 4:00 till sunset to avoid heat stress for those wearing hazmat suits. Maybe that's too logical.) Several of the articles and photos indicated workers were using pooper scoopers and plastic bottles cut in half to scoop the tar. Might be effective but somehow the picture of these people attacking the problem with pooper scoopers is not too reassuring.
There have been several reports of citizens picking up the muck themselves when they become exasperated at the slow or nonexistent response by clean up crews. Today, the newspaper front page shows three workers - with shovels! Woohoo.

Jimmy Buffett, who is opening a Margaritaville Hotel on Pensacola Beach, has been spending time there and has donated several boats for wildlife rescue. Yay, Jimmy!

News coverage of outraged local officials all along the Gulf Coast provides up close and personal insight into just how badly this thing is being handled - by BP and the government. Mr. Hayward, IMHO, should not be the person trying to reassure everyone in the PSAs. And, government representatives don't fare much better, again IMHO. Can't help but think of the expression "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining" when I hear them and then hear local accountings of what's really happening - or not happening. The financial reimbursement factor is a whole other can of worms.

And, slowly but surely the expectations for an end to this are being extended farther and farther out - the fall, Christmas, years. Decades. Longer? Will the sea life ever truly recover?

The emotional impact on folks is palpable - even for those whose livelihood is not being wiped out. For years, we lived on the beach; nothing can compare to beach sunsets, breezes off the Gulf (which reporters keep calling the ocean and that drives me crazy) and beach community spirit. It's a beautiful place.

The absolutely mind boggling, life changing and heritage related damage this is doing to the Louisiana folks especially - all the fishermen, shrimpers and oystermen and everyone who supports these occupations - is reprehensible. They are paying the price for "progress".

It's impossible to escape seeing oil coated wildlife - in every newscast and newspaper. The word cataclysmic seems to apply for starters. And, no matter how "sincere" the talking heads are, I don't believe they get it - it's all just the cost of doing business.

No way can we escape the need for oil and not just for pumping into our vehicles; industry/ manufacturing/consumer goods have evolved to include oil in so many forms. Even if everyone's lifestyle made electric or little bitty cars practical (many of us need trucks for hauling our critters!), we'd still use a tremendous amount.

Don't know if one company is any better than another. Locally, there are some BP station boycotts. It's been pointed out, that only hurts the local folks who lease the business and, in some cases, the fuel sold there is not actually BP product!

Guidelines already in place, safety regulations already in place and those responsible for their oversight should do what they were put in place to do. As for all the government bureaucrats and company big wigs - lead, follow or get the h**l out of the way.

    OK, sorry, I'm done now!

Dear Frens here is a great FOB opportunity, to promote BARBARO's Legacy and finally spotlight the good work of the FOB with legitimate recognition. National/Industry recognition like this is what we have been waiting for.

I am cross-posting from Fren Sally's May 28 DB thread. Please if anyone can attend this, and/or spread the news to gather a representative group, PLEASE DO! Here is the information:
    ..............................................

    Good afternoon, all:

Out of the blue earlier today, I received an e-mail from Barkley Porter, the NTRA's vice president of sales & business development. He had been referred to me by two of my NTRA Barbaro wristband contacts - and I was simply astounded (in a very good way!) by what he had to say.

I am sharing his message in total with you, so that you are aware of this very special June 26 event at Belmont. In short, the NTRA is seeking the FOBs participation and assistance. What a compliment to our group!

    Here goes, Mr. Porter's e-mail message -

    Good Afternoon Sally:

Fellow NTRA colleagues Peggy Hendershot and Barbara Fossum have shared your e-mail of March 26 with me, and I wanted to reach out to you and the FOBs regarding an event at Belmont Park.

Last week I was in New York filming a 60-second public service announcement (PSA) with Barbaro jockey Edgar Prado. It calls attention to a jockey autograph session to benefit the Barbaro Fund and the PDJF. Earlier today we posted the PSA to NTRA.com, and all of our other social network platforms (NTRA Face Book, NTRA You Tube, etc.) Please navigate over to www.ntra.com and you can view the PSA from our home page. There are also a number of behind-the scenes photographs that will be deployed to our platforms as well. I've attached a few of them here. (Note we had Edgar do the PSA while wearing the Barbaro colors.)

As is noted in the PSA, the event takes place on Saturday, June 26th at Belmont Park. Also on that day, the NTRA will make a disbursement from the Barbaro Fund that is destined for the laminitis research fund at the University of Pennsylvania. I'm in the process of inviting Dr. Dean Richardson to Belmont Park that day to receive the check as the University of Pennsylvania's representative. Dr. Richardson has received funds from the Barbaro Fund for his own research project, and we'd very much like to include his participation. (I'm sure FOBs attending the event that day will enjoy seeing Dr. Richardson.)

We hope to see a large turn-out of FOBs that day, and was hopeful you'd help get the word out. If you'd like I can make the PSA and photographs available to you and any other FOB that would like to feature them on their web-sites or social media platforms. Perhaps www.alexbrownracing.com and the Face Book site(s) would be interested.

Anyway, please navigate over to the NTRA web-site, view the PSA and let me know what you think.

    Thanks Sally.

    Regards,

    Barkley N. Porter
Vice President, Sales & Business Development
    National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA)

FOBs - let's get behind this initiative. Those of you in the NYC area, please plan to attend the Belmont event on Jun 26. Check out the psa & photos at www.ntra.com. Post to other forums so the whole of Barbaro Nation is aware of this event.

And thanks to the NTRA for contributing to the continuation of Barbaro's Legacy!

    Sally in Indy

Hiya, FsOB! Our skies over the Thames are darkening on this Weds. morning. I am taking some vacation days till next Tuesday. I am so glad that Kathy enjoyed the "Google Earth" view of CT's Thames.

I must have missed something while leaving Belmont last Saturday, if Lorraine's horse was disqualified to last place. From where we sat, we saw no bumping. And was Lorraine's horse ever a local fave!

Thanks to Otherlyn for posting the note from Sally about the event which will be held at Belmont on Saturday the 26th. If people are planning to attend, can you please post a note here? I'll try to convince Brent, he doesn't particularly fancy a drive south on I-95 and the LIE. I would so dearly love to go, but would want to be able to meet other FsOB. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Bobbie B: Are you enjoying some beach time? I remember that you love the ocean.
To Joan R: Hoping that Molly continues to heal today. She must be quite a trooper!
To Linda in NW FLA: I love that Pedigree ad about the wisdom of shelter dogs, too. And I share your outrage at what continues to devastate the Gulf. Some of the team from the Mystic Aquarium participated in a summit at LSU this past week. If I understood the story which was in The New London Day, some of the staff from Mystic will go down to LA to help with the efforts to cleanse the animals. This disaster will leave its mark on the region and on the planet. Truly a tragedy and truly a disgrace of unfathomable proportions! ####

Yes, O'Reilly should feature Jimmy Buffett on his "Pinheads and Patriots" segment!!

This link will take you to an article about Magnolia Springs, Alabama (cute name, cute community) and their experience with BP, govt red tape and their own ideas to protect themselves. Also reflects local attitudes toward all the "officials"!!
    http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hj_sme-QZ1WNXrEKNhH_ru51OS5wD9G70TVG0

Billy Nungesser from Plaquemines Parish in Louisiana is pretty straightforward, too. He's the one who told the BP hotshot who didn't think the damage would be that bad to get his a** on a plane and come down to the Gulf to see for himself what they were facing.

    Robyn Hoffman,
I read on Bloodhorse.com that Uptowncharlybrown was DQ'd because his weight pad fell off. It said the weight was to make up the difference between the jock's weight and the 126 pound weight all the horses were carrying. The article said the Charly was DQ's because he didn't carry the correct weight for the entire race distance.

Linda NW Fla - our hearts go out to those on the coast and the " hell" thet they are experiencing. I consult to FEMA. As of day 51 none of us have been asked to get ready and get to Fla. Why? Because the system doesn't work any longer. I'd go tomorrow and pay my own way. There are members of the community ready to go. I called my boss and guess what? She's on vacation!! Too bad!! FOCUS ON WHATS important - The savings of the innocents who will die in this, the environmental impact, the disruption of a way of life etc etc etc. I hope his boat gets so oiled up it sinks bellie up! I don't care if he never talks to me again! Another thing this administration is WAY TOO LATE. In addition BP and whom ever is not listening because they make the big bucks and the little man with ideas is nothing. Look at this girl, just graduated engineering school with her idea to put a pipe surrounded by 12 tires and put it inside the pipe that is leaking. Inflate the tire like donuts with hydraulic oil to expand them and seal off the pipe then pump up the oil from the inner pipe. BRILLIANT! Any response - NO. Here's one. When the saw blade got stuck - LEAVE IT! It would have done something to choke it off. Last but maybe MOST IMPORTANT - Its hurricane and tropical depression time. Theres very little time to get this right. That weather blows up and you'
ll be wiping oil off your windshields in Maine!!

OK I'll shut up now!! My blood pressure is skyrocketing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so true Stu! hurricane season is upon us....we cannot afford for this oil to go everywhere...the innocent cannot either....

we should demand more...and expect more...I saw on tv where Linda was talking about the workers...and a reporter ask how long is your lunch? he said 30-45 mins...and the reporter said....you took two hours give or take...I timed you...

Posted by: joan roya at June 9, 2010 7:16 PM

Stu, I agree with ALL you have shared and also your frustration and disgust with the way this is being handled. Considering no one had any contingency in place for deep water incidents, you'd think those "in charge" would be more attentive to ideas coming from the public (ideas which they've actually solicited).

BP's main concern seems to be salvaging oil; addressing the damages their unprepraredness and carelessness have caused is low on their priority list. For the most part, they might be giving it lip service but they are in way over their head - even if all they say actually is sincere. I heard one BP official, when actually faced with the devastated wildlife for the first time up close and personal (hello, welcome to the real world), immediately opened the financial faucet for aid.

I'm glad Jimmy Buffett is involved personally - his hotel venture could not have been timed better. To get the public's attention, unfortunately, it often takes a celebrity and hopefully he'll make the noise necessary to increase awareness in the segments of society who just aren't getting the importance of what is happening here. And the silence thus far is deafening coming from the "do gooding" stars who are always eager to help anyone but blue collar America. You'd think they'd at least 'give it up' for the wildlife, though.

The damage to the tourist industry is going to have a profound ripple effect on local economies, no doubt about it. Some businesses will fold. In the cases of those who make their livings on the water and have done so for generations, this is not just about income but their identity, their very existence. It will be very difficult, very traumatic but hopefully they can find a way to reestablish themselves. All these years later, I believe many affected by the Exxon Valdez incident still suffer - some from self-inflicted problems, some for other reasons but all because of the oil spill.

The most important and urgent concern, though, will all the creatures dependent on the estuaries, marshlands and clean Gulf water be able to reestablish themselves? Theirs are the losses we as a society are going to feel for a much longer time than economic challenges, severe though they may be.

Too bad we can't pack their pockets with their own B.S. and greed, then tie up all the politicians and executives and plop them down right into the hole - I'm sure their inflated egos would more than stop the leak.

Posted by: NWFLAFOB(Linda of NW Fla) at June 9, 2010 7:35 PM

NW it's more than that. The whole system is working for the wrong reasons. Instead of tax payer dollars going to that two bit thug Abbey and the BLM and it's disruptive actions, that money should be going to the Gulf efforts. But no, it isn't. Want to know why? Because its" not in their interest". This isn't impacting the BLM so it's not important. The HELL IT ISN'T! This ultimately impacts ALL OF US! This is a moral issue, not just economic. The American people need to get their heads out of their a...ses and wake up. The greatest generation fought for this? You must be joking. I was in Vietnam 16 months and this is where we are 35 years later? God help us for what we've done. Those birds and animals covered in oil is "our" fault. We have no morals left. Half the Senate should be unloaded, the other half put in nursing homes. We have become a nation of inept idiots. Strip away the layers of insulation between our officials "elected by the people for the people" and let the American people speak their piece DIRECTLY to them. Get me in front of the Senate and I'll speak for ALL OF US,the ones who have morals! Trust me it won't be pleasant for them!

Enough again, I'm boiling. Why? Because I just saw the live pictures of the leak - it's slowing?? WHERE?? That cloud is killing and maiming everything!!

Stu, the Gulf Coast is being blessed with another photo op next Monday and Tuesday - it's probably a good thing you aren't here!! If more people were aware, if they'd check back into the real world, they would be as immaculately pi**ed as you and all those who have it right in front of them 24/7 are. Right now, it's as though a nuclear bomb has gone off in the Gulf and the boom just hasn't spread far enough yet - but, it's on its way.
Corruption has existed as long as mankind has been around but these days it does seem especially rampant. Now that the genie is out of the bottle so to speak, the only thing I know to do is hold them all accountable, oust the dead weight when we can and keep speaking for the ones who can't speak for themselves.

Thankfully, goodness does exist as evidenced by the people who gather here. I can only believe since we exist, there are more out there! Hope so because these battles need a helluva army!

I liked the idea of sticking some of the officials down the pipe to stop it up with their egos..

and...some of the BLM officials...doing roundups on our beautiful mustangs....putting them in holding pens.

and....those who do horse slaughter...to beautiful, innocent America's icon...I cannot say on here what I am thinking about them.

    ###
Please family...now is the time...we have to be heard....look at the elections last night...tea parties....speaking up, all is making a difference.

do we have to start rallying for help for our horses, stand on our heads, get noticed...do we have to go out in the Gulf...and hold hands and say we are human barriers....

Hiya, FsOB! It's a rainy night here on the banks of the Thames. My thanks to Sofie's Lee for the info re. Uptowncharliebrown's disqualification. The reasoning of the officials seemed harsh to me.

Alex, if you are at liberty to do so, it would be a treat to hear more about your dinner with the Jacksons last night. If anyone is planning to go to Belmont on 06/26, might you please post a note here?

I share everyone's disgust at the never-ending debacle in the Gulf. I believe that it was Stu who made the logical connection between the disrespect shown by the BLM towards wild horses and the insufficient Federal action toward saving the birds and sealife in the Gulf. Until more people in this country see that we are "of the Earth" and that we do not "own the Earth", these travesties will continue unabated.

I hope to be on-line in the AM, but will be off-line until next Tuesday. Everyone please have "ACN" and keep fighting the good fight. If Marg in Maine, Liz in the UK, Janice in PA (we miss you here!), or any of the "AM Shift" could greet each new day on my behalf, I'd be most grateful. Peace, Robyn

ROBYN - I felt bad, too, about UptownCharleyBrown's disqualification!! I had not seen it either when I watched the Belmont, but learned it here afterward. Very harsh indeed :(. But we, of course, still love that very fine UptownCharleyBrown, yes we do!!

And on your next trip back to Belmont :) perhaps you can lay a rose at RUFFIAN's final resting place there.

Here we go again. Photos of Gary Coleman dead with his classless wife looking on and selling like crazy on the street. How about a photo of the dead animals in the the Gulf spill or innocent horses going to slaughter on the front page of The Times? Of course not!! I'll bet our Senators/ Representatives have the newspapers sitting on their desks this morning gawking at Coleman. Thats the mentality of the American people! Again, as always, we did what is MORALLY WRONG with these photos this AM. In the meantime the oil is still flowing, the shores of Alabama are hit, the innocent ones are dying and we see Coleman. Again the most viewed item on MSNBC this AM. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and DISGUSTING!

Posted by: Stu at June 10, 2010 2:51 PM

###Stu, it just boggles my mind when I see the mentality of our elected officials and what they deem to be important. Doesn't matter where they are they seem to be cut of the same cloth. I remember the first time they started televising the House of Commons doin's. I thought I was watching a kindergarten class on the first day of school only the kids were bigger. The banging on the desks, shouting at one another, etc. I was appalled and still am. No wonder they can't get their priorities straight.

My heart aches for the animals and people who are caught up in this mess again, will it ever stop? Greed, the lust for power and money at the expense of the innocents? BP has to pay and pay dearly for this tragedy and stop worring about their market shares and bonuses and raises and and and...........

So Stu and all I hear your anger and frustrations and know at least there ARE people who care but it seems just not enough of us in a position to turn this around.

Have a safe day everyone and say a little prayer now and then every day for those in the Gulf who are struggling every minute.

    Dear Frens ALL,

Here is something of interest. I am cross-posting part of it from the DB. It concerns a legitimate Illinois rescue. Kudos to them for "giving back" especially in a State that had murdered thousands of American horses. Let us please keep them in mind, and send even just a little bit, as we are able. Please see the DB for more details and a list of their fund raising drives. Here is a part of their DB post.

Horse Rescue Issues - ILEHC-Our fate is in your hands!

    From: onthebit1 Jun-9 8:15 am
    To: ALL
    48746.1
    Dear members and friends,

When we founded the ILEHC nearly 3 years ago, I never in my wildest nightmare envisioned the enormous struggle that lay ahead in order to keep this rescue up and running. I don't think anyone knew at that time that the economy was about to tank and what the ensuing fallout would be, particularly for the non-profit sector.

I write to you today because the ILEHC has come to a critical crossroad, and the very fate and existence of this organization is quite literally in your hands. Without support (both financial and physical) from each and every one of you, the ILEHC will not be able to survive. With thousands of charities lined-up for only a handful of grants, organizations like the ILEHC cannot solely rely upon funding from grants to pay the bills. The bulk of funding must come from the private sector - via donations made by individuals and through "in-house" fundraising events.

During the past few months the ILEHC has requested your help with several different fundraising events we have in the works and unfortunately, the response to our "call to arms" has not been very successful. To those of you that have contributed to our fundraising efforts, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! To those who have yet to contribute in some way, I beg of you to please consider helping us in any way you're able. The Temptation's song "Ain't to Proud Beg" comes readily to mind and believe me...I ain't to proud to beg if that's what it takes to provide for our horses and to keep this organization afloat!

For Debbie and Jonna, here is Joe. Sorry for no blue link.

    http://www.tbfriends.com/

Thursday, June 10th... 7 for sure. 8 maybes. Boarding stables and private ranches agreeing to allow a kid and horse to board in exchange for chores. Yesterday I wrote about encouraging kids to pay their own way. Owning a horse, with all the highs and lows. I was able to meet ranch manager Kat, who told me they already have two kids on this plan. Kat is happy to make it three.

A million times a year, teen kids say to me, I would do anything to have my own horse. Several are going to get that chance. There are a few obstacles. The barn must be close to where the kid lives. And finding the right horse for the kid can be futile. The right horse might not be here. We give options, advice, and the kid makes the final decision.

Last year a boarding stable in Vacaville was happy to make this arrangement with a teen girl. She spent a week chosing her horse. The gelding was shipped, parents had smiles, barn manager had smiles, and the gelding had a new group of flies to swat. Less than a month later the girl quit showing up for chores. When I finally reached her, the girl said she has a new boyfriend, and there is no time for a horse. The gelding returned to us.

But mostly these arrangements have always worked out. Parents and friends supportive. Barn owners glad to have the extra help.

I was also able to meet Kristin, a single mom who just bought her own small ranch. Kristin has two horses, two dogs, and two colorful roosters. If a teen kid is willing to help with cleaning, there is room for a third horse. Four nights a week Kristin works swing shift at a restaurant. Besides cleaning, the kid must feed those 4 nights, and let the dogs outside for potty. I am pretty sure we have the right kid for Kristin. The two meet this weekend, and I hope they hit if off.

We are not e-Harmony dot com. But we do introduce people to people. Horses to people. Companion horses to other horses. Not long ago we introduced a feral cat to a new garage. Each morning the owner is greeted with sneers as she gets in her car.

The cold San Francisco air came to us last night, confusing hairless horses. Later today could be 76 degrees. Delicious hot coffee from Peets. Heated cinnamon rolls made by Raleys. Enjoy your 85 channels but nothing on TV Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Beatles on the oldies station...

Judy, the problem is there's no public forum to engage these elected officals. Thats the problem. Last year Barney Frank came to Scituate HS, in MA. I went. Of course the questions were submitted on paper so they could pick and choose. Well, I got up and spoke my peace. I must say I was good BUT INTENSE. " I love your exuberience here tonight Barney, but guess what, the country is going in a complete state of collapse because of inept people in the Senate/Representatives like you. Guess what Barney you have people with three things in common, they love their country, their worried in the direction we're head and their scared to death. You and your buddies don't get any of this as we go in the toilet". I stay away from publicity. As I walked away I was embarrassed but I got a standing ovation and a chant " Run for Pres". I was SO EMBARRASSED but I felt good. Now this is what has got to happen, the stand up confrontation with legitimate, cool headed questions. Here we are Day 53 and still this thing is pouring oil. TOTAL INEPT ACTION BY OUR GOVERNMENT AND FRANKLY BY THE US CITIZENS. We'll watch Entertainment Tonight to see who's sleeping with who but we should be watching ENVIRONMENT TONIGHT.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM in referring to slaughter--of course in a "PC" way (sigh)such a huge opportunity. I think I have to ask the question: can TODAY really totaly ignore the issue? I guess so.

    Morning Everyone...

Well, I did watch the Discovery Channel's special last night about the Gulf and it's oil spill....and found it very informative. They laid it out from the very beginning to now.

A question was raised of why no one in the industry had tried measures to see if they'd work or fail prior to such an incident. For the very life of me, I don't understand why they are working so far beneath the water not having in place, measures to stop leaks.

I learned that there are people there with vast experience in engineering and science from not just BP, but other oil companies and the private sector as well.

As far as government involvement and us feeling perhaps our government isn't doing enough goes, the understanding I have is that if we were to come in and 'take over', we, as a Nation, then literally 'take over'. BP could say we 'biffed it' and walk away and it would become not just our problem but our cost entirely. I also have a feeling that through guidelines and or policies laid in place a very long time ago, our hands are 'tied' legally in many areas with this spill....and God forbid any future spills.

I think our Government officials must walk a fine line. Personally, I feel our government is doing all it is legally able to do at this time without assuming complete financial responsibility for this spill.

Sadly, I think no one really knows how to stop this leak except for drilling new wells and diverting the oil..which, as I understand it, will take until around Christmas...and by then with hurricane season and so many thousands of gallons escaping every moment of every day...this is just the tip of the iceberg.

For me, this heinous accident gives new meaning to the word 'catalysmic'. I can't really wrap my head around all the damage this is doing to so many humans, sea creatures, mammals, birds and the very important wetlands in the Gulf. Oil can be cleaned from sandy beaches but what about grassy marshlands.

And I cannot help wonder how the oil companies were ever allowed to drill offshore without proving 'worst case scenario' fixes could be implemented. I wonder which administrations are responsible for that. Offshore drilling has been going on since 1891 so I guess we've been very lucky in these past one-hundred-ten-plus years. However, now, I believe our luck has run out...our luck and the luck of every living thing residing in the waters and on the shorelines of our country.

For those following little Willie's surgery today, please remember his prayer vigil in just a few mintues at 10:00 CST.

Don't know if y'all want to read comments about what's happening in the Gulf states with the oil spill. (If not, Willie's reminder is all I have to say!!) The national news doesn't always do justice to this sort of thing. Pensacola has the air of a town under seige. Afternoon talk radio was interrupted on my ride home two days ago with the news oil had surged into one of the local bay areas - it had the air of a "War of the Worlds" type broadcast only it was real. Local news shows and newspaper devoted almost entirely to the spill.

All local officials (as they are in the other states affected) are absolutely disgusted with the responses from both BP and the government. The so called unified command is neither unified nor commanding. It should be called the unified hindrance. Local officials submit their needs, both monetary and logisitical, mindful of the appropriate chain of command. Once received, it enters a time consuming whirlwind of ineptitude. I'm not saying nothing positive comes out of it but not much is done in either a timely or sensical fashion. Safeguards requested are approved in reduced quantities and arrive late but always with the reassurance "they" are responsive and on top of it all. Only thing these people are on top of is their own cluelessness.

As everyone across the nation knows, the estimates now have increased drastically of the oil murdering our Gulf and all that lives in it or bordering it. It's hard to dialogue about it without laying the blame at the feet of BP (more and more is leaking out, pardon the bad pun, concerning their circumventing safety precautions and ignorance about how to handle such a disaster. I don't know if other companies are as guilty or not) and at the feet of our government. I do hope everyone gets out and votes in elections as they happen - local, state, and national. These are also the people we petition to put an end to horse slaughter in our country. They MUST get off their complacent a**es and start listening to the vast majority of the electorate, a sleeping giant who has been awakened and has a voice. Let them hear it and hit them with it where they live!

For the conspiracy theorists, see if this tragedy is allowed to fester longer than necessary to pave the way for increased legislation concerning taxes, prohibitive business practices, takeovers of yet another industry or feigned increased concern in regard to environmental issues -resulting in increased taxes. Actions being taken "as quickly as possible" simply are not - laws and regulations cited as roadblocks can be circumvented in a case of national emergency such as this - but they are not. Why?

Perhaps a good place to start (aside from miraculously cleaning the Gulf) is to hold responsible those in positions to oversee oil industry regulations for jobs not well done or done at all and those in positions to act as protectors of our environment who have looked the other way for the sake of personal gain or out of ignorance. Hold them accountable for job
(non)performance by removing them! Tragically no matter what is done now, our wildlife is dying and that hurts my soul and the souls of all who get it.

Stu, if we do have a hurricane come through the Gulf, I fear folks will be cleaning oil from windshields far and wide. We usually see the most activity later in the season, but even if that holds true this year, the oil will still be there. This debacle and now this exercise in futility has scarred a once beautiful and bountiful section of our country for untold years to come. God must surely be weeping.

Here's Joe for Friday...for Kathy B., Debbie LA, and Jonna...

Friday, June 11th... All night with these awful winds, and I had left the screen window open in our tiny office. Like a bomb went off. Dirt and dust and papers, but I did find a video from the time Fox did a story on us. This was when I had less than 3 chins.

Our electricity went off, which means no water. We have water stored, but the winds are cold, so horses are not really drinking. I called PG&E to report our outage, and a recorded voice lectures me on living a greener life. If only the recorded voice could see the alfalfa in my hair.

3:30 this morning, like a hurricane, and in our barn the gelding Logician is going bonkers. We call him Logan, and he came to us from a race track with a broken leg. Our vet Lisa put Logan on some kind of magic medicine, he healed fine and dandy, and now Logan moves like Lauren on that dancing show. His brain remains goofy. Wind, rain, the UPS truck, a leaky hose, and Logan falls apart. Always with the drama. And never turn on the flashlight, or Logan will go through a wall. I stayed with him in the dark until the roosters woke up. Played different ring tones on my phone. I think Logan likes Adams Family the best.

Our power is back, which means delicious hot coffee from Dunkin Donuts. Paul Anka on the oldies station. I was going to write one of my Thank You websites, as we continue to count our blessings. But chores are forever, and winds have put me far behind. They say these winds will last all day.

I will return Monday morning, to share with you life from our Funny Farm. Hopefully over the weekend the Kodak program can be repaired. Have a happy weekend. Flies blown away to Lodi.

I was just thinking especially of KIP DEVILLE yesterday, looks like I know the reason now, a "message" of sorts . . . . God Bless him and hold him tight in HIS arms, and his special people.
Prayer vigil continues for dear KIP, and will send a special request to the monastery, too, upon this latest sad news.
We love you KIP and we stand beside you in spirit, honey, and feel St. Francis right there with you in your stall.

Sorry so late in the day, but a big shout out for FOB ROBYN!!

Sorry if I missed, has there been any word about MOLLY??

###Stu, quote "I was so embarrassed but I felt so good"; and so you should feel good, you stood up and spoke from you heart and that in itself is wonderful. Do you think that even if there were a forum for people to address the officials they wouldn't just give us the lip service and go on their merry way? I wish that wouldn't be the case but I'm not trusting to believe it would happen.

    Thank you for speaking out.

Wonderful article in Toronto Star about Zenyetta and not even in the Sports Page but the Living section. It was aimed at how Zenyetta has attracted women to the races increasing the attendance records. Also mentioned that after her workouts her trainer gives her Guiness.

Have a safe weekend everyone and prayers that everyone racing comes home safe.

Yes, Jane. Kip was a beautiful horse. His passing was heart-breaking -- it brought me swiftly back to Barbaro's death. Even though we FOBs were and are all too aware of how quickly laminitis can overtake a horse, it was still hard to believe the disease had claimed Kip, too. How I wish we could make major headway in research, treatment, and eventual cure of laminitis.

Hey BOBBIEB....your girl won!!! Woo hoo!

Posted by: kathyb at June 12, 2010 9:43 PM

I just got home from the beach 20 minutes ago , and turned on the puter to see if Rachel won --- wow look at her time , it's great to see her come back , so great ---
    # Kathyb , Rachel won and looks fine afterward far as you can tell on the tv cameras - now
tomorrow , Zenyatta has to win and come home safe and we will have ourselves a real weekend !

Except for poor Kip - how awful , and I had hoped he was doing better. You know we heard he was so much better he might leave R&R and go to a lay-by facility. Then nothing - no news at all , then colic and now this , he is gone. Damn laminitis , how I hate it. Hate it . Hate it. Goodbye Kip, you great and beautiful horse.

Missed you all , and glad to be back although my house is 96* inside cause the ac has been off. It's starting to cool but I'm roasting ... I'll go and get a few things done now if I can stand the heat , oh how I love ac and hope it will hurry.
    See ya later frens,

Wellllll...I got 'swept out w/the spam'..so, in case Judy didn't see my post from earlier...Thank you, Judy for thinking of me with the UTube video of baby Hummer...dial-up and UTube don't 'werk sew gud' together, so I'll take your word for it being wondermous:)

I also was sad to read of Kip Deville's passing....I feel for his people, they obviously loved him very much. He was a beautiful horse...Naughty Nancy's favorite...Gray.

Welcome Home, Bobbie B:) Hope the a/c has done it's job by now...and congrats to your girl, Rachel for a well run race today!

I wrote earlier of Zenyatta and her love of Guinnes Stout, served to her in a shallow bowl:) and also her delight of tasting with gusto..a Birthday Cake made specially for her:) I understand she is running tomorrow here in CA...Godspeed beautiful Z....come home safe!

Linda, NWFLA:) I know....Marigolds, too...but there's an awful lot of 'dead-heading' involved with the little darlings...so I will just go with the Vinca..but thanks!! :) I must plant 48 and the Vinca grow so nicely, they fill the entire pot with one giant green ball of whatever color blossoms they are...such 'common' flowers, but they love the HOT SUN and the deer just cannot STAND their flavor!! :)

I hope everyone has a great/grand/wonderful Saturday Night.

donation, about 3000 bales of hay. This hay is located in East Berlin, PA and so far we have been able to move about 800 bales of hay to the storage facility.

You can check out our process and our way hay convoys on our facebook page.

We received this donation on Wednesday (June 9, 2010) and have been moving hay daily since then...we have until this weekend to move the hay into a storage barn being generously loaned to us to use to store the hay, in the Glenville, PA area.

    WHAT WE NEED:

We need more hands and trucks and trailers for this coming Tuesday (June 15, 2010) evening. Anyone in the Hanover, PA or surrounding areas interested in helping us move and load hay, or who has a truck and/or trailer we can borrow please drop me a note by clicking here.

We also need a LARGE DUALLY truck to haul a hay wagon...we do not have a truck large enough to pull the wagon.

Also, we will be moving hay again on Friday and hopefully one other day this week. If you can help us and have a different day you can help...please let us know.

Dear Friends and supporters of HDLM.

We need to raise $3,200 for emergency surgery for our newest resident, a 10-12 year old mammoth jack who has named himself Oneness. We took him despite our current financial stress, as he is an incredible fellow with tons of life left if we can take care of him. He came here on May 30th. Most likely his condition was misdiagnosed, and he needs the surgery to remove a large mass on his sheath. It is probably 10# or more. If you want to see what it looks like, please send me an e-mail address and I will forward the pictures taken on June 1. They are not easy to look at. Doc will do the surgery this coming Wednesday June 16 despite the large bill he is carrying for us now, as he is totally in love with this fellow as well. I know we've asked a lot this year from you wonderful people, and I trust that some of you will be willing and able to help with this. Please put "Oneness surgery" on checks or PayPal donations. With your permission, if we get more than needed, I'd like to apply any excess to our outstanding vet bill. Please feel free to forward this to anyone you feel might be interested.

    Bless you,

    Wynne

    Morning Everyone:)

Another Monday Morning...and I realize y'day...I looked at today instead of Sunday on my calendar...so once again..and THIS TIME FOR REAL...

    *HAPPY FLAG DAY* !!!

I'm still smiling from *ZENYATTA*...or as Bobbie B read...*ZEVENTEEN* this morning:) The girl is simply AMAZING and so are her PEEPS...that 'toocute' Mike Smith makes me smile, too!! :) Mr. Sherriffs always standing with the fans, never going into the box to watch..I've always appreciated that, too. Z's Groom, giving her kisses...you can just SEE the love he has for her..it just EXUDES from all his pores and tickles me PINK:)

Truth be known, I'd love to see her retired. I heaved a huge sigh of relief after she so AMAZINGLY won the Breeder's Cup last Fall...when they announced her retirement. I know she and Rachel are both very good for racing though..they bring out the fan base in a BIG way, both of them, so I assume that is the reason for her 'un-retirement'...I get afraid for the racing horses since Barbaro, I had no idea of horses breaking down so often until our Boy got into my heart. Yole know I don't normally watch the races until I know everyone got galloped out safe/sound...but yesterday, though my stomach was in my throat, I had to watch her!

She and her people have all found a place in my heart and I wish them all nothing but the best! I hope perhaps this year, she will FINALLY be awarded Horse of the Year..'cause I think she surely deserves it!

I had some 'critter' experiences here yesterday I'd sooner not repeat! Two HUMONGUS 'queen size' WASPS found their way into my home...one in the morning...and one in the afternoon?? I have NO idea how or where they came in and am hoping to NOT see more!

Also..as coming indoors from my little back porch y'day afternoon...what did I see half-in-half-out of the guest bath but an ALIGATOR LIZARD THE SIZE OF IDAHO!! OMG! I reached into the linen closet which is NEXT to the bathroom..and grabbed a hand towel...by that time, LIZZY realized I had spotted he/she and turned to go fully INTO the bath! No shoes on...it's summertime...I am mostly ALWAYS barefoot in summer...no time to get shoes...put light on, carefully stepped into the bath...pulled the door away from the wall and Yep...there it was...by now, curled up and no doubt SRSLY AFRAID! I dropped the hand towel onto it and waited a second or two to determine it's next move...and it did just what I hoped it would, which was NOTHING...so carefully...very carefully, I scooped it up in the towel and began the short walk back to laundry room to outside door...let me just say, that short walk felt AWFULLY FAR!! The Lizzy was poking it's head out from the towel looking right at me the WHOLE WAY..our eyes locked on one another, Family!!! Each as afraid as the other!!! OMG! I got it outdoors and set it down on the porch near the little gate at the top of my stairs and it stayed there...I got afraid I'd somehow hurt it..so grabbed a pencil from the table and nudged it a little with the eraser end...and ZOOOOOOOM!!! Off it went...Whew, I thought to myself...and then:/ turned to open the door to come back inside and I HAD LOCKED MYSELF OUT OF THE HOUSE...:/

Fortunately, a pr of yard shoes live most of the time, on my porch...so on they went and across the street I went to make a call to another neighbor who THANKFULLY has a key to my house! I tell you....by the time I'd gotten back indoors I felt like I'd been pulled through a keyhole BACKWARDS...and all that BEFORE *Z's* race! I MUST put something containing alcohol on my shopping list!! LOL!

I hope everyone has a 'dine&fandy' day today!

    Lynne ! !

I have to tell you that you may be in the forefront of an invasion from outer space ! ! !

I saw a tv show that had giant lizards who could turn into people and fool us. They were here, these big lizards , to populate and colonize the earth and we , puny humans , were to be their ... wait for it .... food .

Usually these lizard invasions start in Tokyo , but I guess it could start in CA.
Just be on the alert and if this lizard should return and want to be frens , be very careful , especially if he asks for ketchup and mustard while looking at you greedily ;)

lol , just Monday afternoon silliness.
see ya later , alligator !

Bobbie B!!! Thank YOU so MUCH for the WARNING!! LOL!!! We've certainly got LOTS of LIZZIES this summer! LOTSOFEM! More than normal it seems...and I'm guessing all the late Spring rains might have something to do with them being so PROFUSE! Or..perhaps they HAVE arrived here in the westwing to take over and move eastward!! :)

Never before have I had one in my house! Quite the EXCITEMENT...and I do NOT wish to repeat!

Got my morning chores done...went out back to water and refresh the SKWEEERL 'pond'....the watering wand got me soaking wet:/ In I came for a washer...had to 'rob one' from another hose splitter I've not used yet...it werked:) and I need to now add washers to my list of needs...along with ADULT BEVERAGE INGREDIENTS!! Gin comes to mind...tonic and a couple of fresh Limes...YUM!

Speaking of the Skweeerls...they were COMPLETELY out of seeds this morning...and in my rushing to accomplish so much indoors, I had neglected to off-load the bag from Katie's trunk...omGoodness the kidddds were nearly FRANTIC by the time I noticed them!! LOL! They give me so much enjoyment:) They're all fed now, the dishes are filled and they're all very HAPPY...I wet down the soil out back for them this morning, too...it is already 93 degrees out there and it's only 12:22p...going to be a hot afternoon!

I think I found where the GIANT WASPS got indoors...there's a sizeable gap between the top of my screen door and the frame it sits in..I tried some of that sticky on one side weather stripping...what a folly THAT turned out to be...I have a call into my 'fixit guy'....he's the best-ever...and he will come with a pc of trim and his drill and some screws and 'fixit' for me:)until then, the door stays SHUT because I want NO MORE WASPS the size of CT in my house, either!!

Off to have some lunch...everyone, have a good afternoon!

Joe has put an UPDATE up....the preggers mare due in March has already been spoken for:)

I wonder how she ended up on a feed lot having been bred to *REAL QUIET* who won a total of $3,271,802 in his career...on Sire's side, this fella's gr/grandfathers were Mr. Prospector and Dr. Fager..among others...and on Dam's: Raise A Native...*REAL QUIET* was 1998 Champion 3y/old...and his 'bride' or one of them ends up on a feedlot...?? Actually...according to pedigree query...Real Quiet is standing at stud in Uraguay at Haras Cuato Piedras...wish this Mare could tell us where she's been?

Lynne Joe said, The mare is 10, 16.2 hands, and "her" sire is Real Quiet. She is due to foal next March.
I think that's right? we don't know who the foal sire is!

Debbie LA!! Thank You! For clarifying...I read and thought Joe meant her foal was sired by Real Quiet...and NO WONDER it didn't make sense!! LOL!

Good thing Joe found her, huh? Bless her heart and the heart of her foal, too! Poor babe! It's always so sad to think of ANY horse ending up at a feedlot...but when I read of these TB's...it just makes me so ANGRY along with sad:( They are born into this world with such high hopes placed upon them...some 'shine brightly', others not so much...but NONE should EVER end up in feedlots:( Sort of blows to Hell, the 'romance' of the Blue Grass State, and it's horses, doesn't it? Shame on whomever is responsible for this one.

BTW: Speaking of 'equine royalty':) Safe Haven took *SESSIE* aka *EXCESSORIZED* to the Western Horse Expo in Sacramento this weekend...she was a *STAR*, for sure!!! They put together a big poster board showing *BIG RED* to be her gr/gr/grandfather...and her 'before' photos from when she arrived at the rescue in early February this year to NOW:) She looks like about a MILLION/ZILLION DOLLARS....I get a FATT lump in my throat when I see her photos now..Linda got her a brand new leather halter and a brass name plate...and she cleans up so good!! She let people pet her for the most part...when she got tired of the attention, she slipped to the back of the barn:) Linda said she made the mistake of skritching her butt a time or two...so then for awhile as people approached her...she'd turn her fanny to them..for MORE SKRITCHES, please!! LOL! Of course they all obliged very willingly....:) She was a hit for sure! They brought *DRIFTER* along to keep her company and they both got back up north safe/sound late last night:)

Linda said the US Forest Service Mounted Unit went by the barn where they were with MULES and *SESSIE* nearly lost her mind trying to stretch her neck out to see WHAT ON EARTH ARE THOSE??? I guess she's ever seen Mules before! LOL! She was extremely curious!

Hiya, FsOB! I'm baaaack on the banks of the Thames & it is so good to be home once again. It's a a beautiful, almost Summer Solstice sort of evening. Prolonged daylight has been followed by a pink and turquoise opalescent dusk.

How sad to read of Kip Deville's passing. He now joins Barbaro, Secretariat and countless other TBs whose lives were extinguished due to laminitis.

Kudos to both Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra! What a hoot to read that Z loves Guinness Stout. I hope that they both got their respective favourite treats following their victories.

How wild to think that Edgar Prado was riding a horse named "We Get It!" on Edgar's birthday. Is anyone planning to go to Belmont on 06/26? Can you please post a note here if you do?

    Wishing all "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Tamme, Judy, Jackie, Jane, and all here who loved Kip Deville: May he rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon him.
To Lou Ann, Liz, & Marg: Thanks for showering The Barbaro Nation with AM greetings!
To Otherlyn: Thanks for posting the note about Edgar Prado's birthday.
To Lou Ann: Yes, my niece is now officially a high school graduate. I gave her your good wishes.
To Kathy B: I hope that the photos reached you today.
To Sandra: I never knew it before last weekend, but my brother-in-law's mother hails from Lubbock originally. ####

    Good Morning Barbaro

we are here...your foot soldiers...giving our best...trying to wake the public about HORSE SLAUGHTER...neglect, and abuse...

trying to let folks know about how our wild mustangs are being treated.

trying to get a federal law passed...that Congress is giving us a deaf ear..or our President.

trying to figure out how to get Ken Salazar and Abbey to GET IT.

please famblee....please...I know...because I am in that battle trying to survive...and pay my bills, and do what I can...but can you spare $2, $5 or more and help our rescues...or even change.

we rely on the rescues...and jump up and down for glee when they rescue a horse, dog or cat...but their expense is great.

some are even closing their doors because they cannot make ends to meet because of this economy.

no one promise us a bed of roses...but maybe a rose...one rose...one $1 to help.

may God bless each of you...keep you safe...and help provide...and find ways to help you and our rescues.

    ####
    Thank you Alex.

    Morning Everyone....

Joan Roya: Bless your giving heart! Life is hard for so many of us right now...we just keep putting one foot in front of the other, doing what we can to keep ourselves afloat and help wherever, however we are able, others.

I watched Nightly News last night and it seems BP had 'production' more on their minds than safety not only for the Gulf but it's own employees...I hope heads will roll...and I hope the fund they are establishing will help the humans affected as well as the wildlife, though I cannot imagine enough money to make it all 'go away':(

I managed an entire day yesterday, without wasps or lizards in the house...thankfully! Though I'll admit in the case of lizards..I looked for them as maneuvering through my house...I'm a bit 'nervous' now and want NO surprises! My 'fixit' guy is coming today to take care of that 'gap' at the top of my screen door:)

It got a bit 'toasty' in the afternoon...and yes:) the 'skweeerls' took advantage of the moistened soil..and lay like 'pancakes with tails' off/on throughout the afternoon:)

I hope everyone has a good day today, do what you can to help some horses...emails and or calls to the White House take just a few minutes...well, the emails, anyway...and Joan is right...even change helps add up to the bottom line for rescues.

Family...they need help....remember Cavel...and they helped so much like all of you shutting this hellhole down...

The following is a list of fundraising endeavors that critically need your support. If you are unable to make a financial gift, please consider helping in some other fashion.

Donations are urgently needed for our "Let 'em Eat Hay" campaign. To date we have raised less than $1,000.00 toward our annual hay expenditure which totals more than $17,000. Without your help, we will not be able to purchase the hay we need to feed the horses and we will be faced with having to close our doors. I don't wish to frighten anyone with this statement, I just want you to realize that these are the facts. Without funds to feed the horses, the ILEHC will cease to exist. If you wish to make a donation to our hay fund, please click here or mail a check to us at: ILEHC - 9N673 Kendall Road - Elgin, IL 60124.

Participate in the ILEHC Fundraising Challenge. If you are unable to make a financial gift at this time, please consider holding your own fundraising event. Funds raised from this event are critical in order for the ILEHC to be able to provide our horses with every day necessities such as feed, bedding, veterinary care, dental and hoof care, fly protection, etc., and to keep the ILEHC farm well maintained and in working order. To date, not a single person has signed up for our Fundraising Challenge. Please..please (begging again!) consider holding an event. Every single penny you raise will truly make a difference for the horses! For details on how you can participate in the Fundraising Challenge, please click here.

Become an ILEHC Member. If you are not a member, please consider joining today! Your membership fee not only helps to feed the horses, it also serves to sustain the organization by providing funds needed to pay for insurance, educational materials, office supplies, etc. We must grow our membership in order give this organization the best chance of survival during these challenging economic times. Please click here to join or renew your membership.

Support the ILEHC's Annual Dinner and Auction!! This will be the ILEHC's FIRST EVER large fundraising event. If we are to be able to continue helping horses during 2011, this event simply MUST be an overwhelming success. The bulk of the funds we need to sustain the organization next year will need to come from this event. We are counting on you to help ensure that we do not let the horses down, so please consider helping (on one knee and begging now!!) with one or more of the following:
Donate an item or two for the silent or live auction.
Solicit items from merchants for use in the silent or live auction.
Post the event flyer to stables, feed stores, and other local businesses.
Serve on the ILEHC Auction Committee. We need over 300 items for the auction and still need several people to help secure the items and to assist with preparations both prior to and during the event.
For more information on how you can help with this critically important event, or to purchase tickets, please click here.

Last but not at all least...if you are in the market for a new horse, please consider adopting one of our wonderful and incredibly deserving horses. We have several fabulous horses in need of loving homes, many of which will make awesome sport or pleasure mounts! Please click here to visit our adoption page. We also need additional foster-care providers, and professional trainers that are willing to assist with the care and retraining needs of our horses.

In closing, please consider that the ILEHC has accomplished a great deal in its short history and has made a tremendous difference in the lives of a great many horses. We have rescued well over a dozen horses from slaughter, led the effort to keep the horse slaughter industry out of Illinois, rehabilitated injured and neglected horses, and retrained and successfully re-homed many deserving horses. Our track record with the horses has been an incredible success, however, our ability to meet our financial needs has not been so stellar.

With your help we can and will meet the challenges that lay ahead. With your help we can and will continue to make a difference. Our fate is in your hands. Please consider helping in any way you can.

    With kind regards,

Morning to all of youse ,

Well , have we recovered from the exploits of
Alexandra the Great and Queen Zenyatta - - enough to make our calls and write our emails ? ?... lol , I hope so ..... I hope they don't both race on one day / next day anymore -- it's too much for my poor heart ...........

I played both races over and over yesterday and just exulted in them --- which is great when the fear and anxiousness is gone and I know the results !.......... I'm so proud to live in their time.

I'm also proud to be one of Barbaro's foot soldiers , as Joan says ...
    working for our horses....
Why did the Pres. appoint Salazar to the interior ?
He's a rancher at heart and in experience. From what I read - they don't think much of the wild horses , and believe that all horses are livestock ----
No offense to any ranchers here -- I'm speaking in generalities of what I have read and heard --

I guess politics does make for strange bedfellows......
But let's call , let's email , and maybe a thought, or a question, or a request will get through to somebody who cares enough to pass it on .......

    Prez O'bama 1. 202. 456. 1111

or google contact the white house and get a quick form to come up . It only takes a couple minutes.
Think of the horses on the trucks and standing terrified in the slaughter lines , right now , at this second , ... can you help them , please try.
    Thanks ,

    Thanks.

Posted by: kathyb at June 15, 2010 5:02 PM

Kathy B....I almost lost my breath when I read Debbie's post here..but checked the DB..there is a Thread...the race Nic is running today is an 'Optional Claiming' race...he's NOT up for claiming... Just running a race on Turf..with some other horses...I srsly need to learn about the different terms used in racing and also need to learn more about why horses must sometimes run as claimers when owners are sometimes 'holding their breath' their horses don't get claimed...I don't understand except they must run 'x' number of races in a 'x' number of time so sometimes claimers are all they are eligible for?

Anyone here who could put this into 'layman's terms', I'd sure appreciate that:)

Debbie...I think the keyword in Nic's race today is 'optional' claiming. 'Optional' claiming races, i.e., some are running with a price tage and others are not...Maybe later, when I'm more 'together' with my 'to-do' list...I can go to Alex' FAQ section and see if an explanation might be there. I'll say this though....I sure learned today, what 'optional' means..not every horse running is 'up for grabs'...I won't be forgetting that!! :)

Posted by: kathyb at June 15, 2010 6:16 PM

This race is a real drop in class for Nicanor , so they must really need to find him a race for a hard work-out , more or less.
He should run away with this one. Perhaps they are doing it to bolster his confidence. And it's on grass too - if it rains they'll go to dirt though.

In my post above , I wrote ".... when the fear and anxiousness is gone ..."

    is gone.
Perhaps I needs to go back to school and study my verb tenses some more , then I can gets it right.

I ain't never made but one grammatical error and I knowed it when I done it. Since then I been bout perfect.

Good luck Nicanor to win , although you won't need it, but I pray for you and all the horses to come home safely--- stay safe beautiful one.

    Alex' FAQ section

What are the typical types of races?

Gender: Races are for Fillies / Mares or open (either sex, but basically colts and gelding run).
Age: Restricted races are for two year olds and three year olds. Other races are for three year olds and up.
There are a number of different types of races, but those below are the majority of races run.
Maiden: For horses who have not won a race. They are "Maiden Special Weight", which is the equivalent of an allowance race, where the condition is "never won a race"; or "Maiden Claiming", where the horse is entered for a claiming price depending on the race. Maiden Claimer's at the high end are about $50,000, at the low end, $5,000.
Claimer: The majority of US races are claiming races. Claim slips need to be made before the race. Once the horse starts the person putting in the claim owns the horse (but not the purse money for that race). If multiple people put in a claim slip for one horse there is a "shake" to determine who owns the horse after the race. Only those owners registered at the racetrack can put in a claim slip for a horse. Claiming races can be very low ($3,500) to high ($75,000). Claiming races also have conditions, these conditions determine what type of horses can run for that claiming race, and it is based on either number of races won lifetime, number of races won within the last x months etc. Think of claiming races as a means for owners and trainers to "self-handicap" their horses. They select a claiming race that they know their horse can compete, yet it is not so cheap a price that they will lose their horse (unless of course their intent is to try to move the horse on to another barn).
Allowance: Allowance races allow horses that have their conditions (i.e. have not won too many races) to compete without a claiming price. The allowance conditions are based on the number of races won (i.e. there are races for horses that have won one race, two races, three races) and often those conditions exclude races such as their maiden and any claiming races (i.e. a race "never won two other" than means a race for horses that have not won two races other than a maiden, claimer or starter handicap).
Stake: These are the major races. They can be graded (grade 1 to 3), grade 1s being the glamour races (Kentucky Derby, Breeders Cup races); non-graded but open (to all horses); or restricted to the state's breeding program (Maryland Million races for example).

Molly and family still needs our prayers...latest update on her....

has gained some strength in both rear legs (motor skills) and they are working better. He was getting ready to do some postural exercises with her to work on her core muscular system. Overall, he said that she is continuing to progress everyday and he is giving her about a 60% chance to be able to walk again. He also said that he may be able to get her on the underwater treadmill today and that will certainly help.

Just wanted to give an update since mom is very busy at work. She was planning on making a trip up there this morning to bring Molly’s pain meds but with work as busy as it is she couldn’t. I’m not sure if she’s planning on going this afternoon or what. Also, Molly started back on her thyroid medicine yesterday so we should see some added strength once that gets back in her system pretty good.

Thanks for all the prayers….please continue to say them for our sweet Molly! We appreciate everything!!! J

Hiya, FsOB! Another gorgeous dusk approaches as we inch closer to the Summer Solsticeon 06/21/2010. All of the neighbourhood cats seem to love our yard, especially at this time of year with the warm grasses and the blossoming catmint.

Can someone please post how Nicanor does in his impending race this week? I, too, was confused and worried at seeing the term "claimining" in the description of the race. It is reassuring to have so many knowledgable folks here to explain some of the racing terminology.

Is there a thread started for the event that will be held at Belmont on Saturday the 26th? Is anyone planning to attend? If so, please post a link here.

    Wishing everyone ACN. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Sandra: Is there a university in Lubbock? I think that Judy grew up in Lubbock, but perhaps she went to college there. She and her husband now live in Austin.
To Joan R: Keeping Molly in my thoughts for a full recovery.
To Kathy B: I hope that the photos which I mailed have reached you.
To Liz: I simply adore those blue-links from Ascot. Millinery to die for, as we say over here. Many thanks for sharing the pics, Liz.
To Dee M.: I sure miss seeing you here!
To Jonna: Hoping that all goes well for you & your GHs. ####

Hiya, FsOB! After much of the sunrise's glinting off the Thames, the river is now a gunmetal grey colour. Dappled grey clouds are coming in from the west. It appears that we are in for a rainy day after all.

I can't wait to see photos from Day 2 at Royal Ascot! Please, if anyone is going to Belmont on 06/26 for the autograph signing event on behalf of the Barbaro Fund, would you please post a note here?

Wishing everyone a safe & productive day! Thinking of all the residents, either human, winged, finned, or four-legged, in the Gulf. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Kathy B: I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the pics, Kathy! Our Thames is a most interesting place.
To Sandra: I need to drop Judy a note and I'll ask her if she went to Texas Tech. Her husband is an "Aggy" alum. ####

FAKE SHELTER / RESCUER ALERT (Rocky Mount , NC)
    April 2008
Tony & Rebecca Williams claim to have a rescue in Rocky Mount , NC and are trying to get dogs from all over the Eastern Seaboard. (She offered to take 14 dogs since Monday.) They are using these dogs for illegal dog fighting. She continues to take dogs. Most are pit bulls, with some offers to adopt Presa Canarios, Rottweiler's, Dobermans, and Wolf hybrids. In addition, she had previously posted that her roommate was looking for a Great Dane or Great Dane mix. She also posted that she was "desperate" for a Chihuahua and she really wanted a Min Pin and a Jack Russell. She claims her rescue is a pit bull rescue, but another pit rescuer called the local Animal Control

hi kathy b, debbie goddess o the bloolink//////etc.

And I for one am not happy Nic is running. I don't think Nic WANTS to run. Period. Put that boy in the breeding shed.

And that's as far as I will crawl out on the branch.

One of the resons I have been absent is that I have the village all over me because of GCNY and attendant issues. I'm working on it, but my BEST Vol Ever is in the process of moving to Colorado Springs::::AUGH.

Everyone else has lives. I can respect that. And the weather is absolutely S&^%%^ in June up here. You see all the leetle bunnies in their prom gowns--which sure don't dear any resemblance to MY prom gowns (sigh...it's all true)

These leetle girls look like hookers. Lord am i getting old.

Anyhow the other reason I am out to lunch is fibro myalgia which puts you to sleep at 8 pm every night AND makes you just want to sleep anytime handy. The syndrome makes you "body sore", so you don't sleep soundly or uninterrupted. Hence the fatigue.

It's all a lot of blah blah, makes me think of my dear ones lost to cancer at early ages, and then I feel like a swine for even mentioning the damned FB.

But--sigh: I tend to be interested in very little.
Where's the happiness in this world. The poor Gulf. Greed, stupidity. BP's hollow apologies. The loss of so many animals....some species we don't even know about yet will be among those that go extinct under this heinous and relentless assault.

One bright starry point, those Sumatran tiger babies. They are the future. Two of 24 left in the world. and probably the highest percentage in zoos. Zoos are arks. Arks further conservation.

    We should never forget this.

Me - first politicians who won't lift a finger to help save horses from slaughter are the ones that send me into distraction. And those who work for the government - in their safe- little- do- very little -jobs , who are just so put out and have barely concealed contempt for citizens when you call.

I called Ken Salazar's office a few weeks ago , and the woman who answered seemed astonished , and asked who I was and how I had gotten the number.

I told her that I was an American citizen , who paid taxes that paid her salary and Mr. Salazar's, and that I wanted to leave a message for him.
She pretended to take the message and I felt I had made a point -- although what point I don't know since it didn't help the horses one little bit.
I think these people hope that a sense of futility will overtake us , and that we will stop.
Well , yippee kiyo , Mr Rancher Salazar ,
I won't stop until you stop killing our horses.

I hope you won't stop either. It's the least our horses deserve , someone to speak out for them.

Please call today , or email , your politicos and the Prez - perhaps someone will hear us today -- one message might get through.

    Joan ,

For Salazar I have a couple numbers , but I can't give out the one I referred to , a matter of keeping my word on a promise.

You can try , I'm not promising success here, but try
    1.202.208.7351
    1.866.468.7826
    1.202.208.3181

    White House Switchboard 1.202.224.3121
might be able to connect to Salazar's office or give you a number
I think we all had the numbers above and were calling them at one time during the Cloud debacle with the BLM but we certainly could still use them unless they got smart and changed them !

and before I sign off and let my hunk work on the router for the puter .. . . may I quote that great philosopher Tom Hanks in Castaway :

You just have to keep on breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise and who knows what the tide will bring.

I wish I could credit the screenwriter but can't

    ###Dear Fren DebbieLA:

Thank you for posting the encouraging info re the Jockey Club's lip tattoo program. I have been trying to spread a germ of an idea which would take TB identification to the next level.

It would be a highly publicized fee-based-option that would include a cold brand on the inner thigh that says "NO KILL-SCAN ME," a microchip with emergency rescue contact information, and pre-paid voucher for a vet administered euthanasia. (There are otherdetails that I have worked out for this, but too involved to post today).

The JC is on the right track, we must encourage them, the racetracks, the NTRA, owners, and trainers, whenever we can to close up the cracks through which the horses are likely to fall, as they are passed from owner-to-owner.

Fren BobbieB: I share your frustration as we "flail-at-windmills" in the halls of Congress. Politicians (especially the openly corrupt pack that currently holds sway over our lives) are concerned with one thing...POWER.

I too continue to make calls, send e's and courteously demand action. However, it seems that they are simply waiting for us to grow weary and go away.

I suggest that we, (as well as continuing our present actions), begin to involve any and all forms of MEDIA. (They got this bunch elected, perhaps once the truth of the tragedy catches them by the heart, THEY can draw the attention of the politicians toward this issue, because it will no longer be hidden from the public.

Praying for safety, and wishing GOD SPEED for our beloved NICANOR today. While he didn't exactly step full into my dreams, thoughts of him filled my morning twilight.

    Loving BARBARO.

Just in case yole are not familiar with what laminitis is, here you have it.

THIS IS WHAT I WOULD GUESS KIP DE VILLE WAS PUT THROUGH. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS "COURAGE."

Imho, having seen way too much cancer in my gh's and IW's, if it's a bone cancer or any other affliction of that class--I get them down and back to God as soon as I can. It's not up to the animal to be COURAGEOUS, we're the decision makers.

We have to guard against anthropomorphism at all times...It is our responsibility--a god-given responsibility--to help those animals who are suffering from whatever onward to rest and Heaven.
    **************************************************

    What is Laminitis?
LAMINITIS SYMPTOMS / DIAGNOSIS OF LAMINITIS

    Symptoms of laminitis include:
Stiffness, lameness, standing on the heels, reluctance to move, heat in the feet and increased fetlock pulse, laminitic rings, sensitivity to hoof testers and dropped soles.

Laminitis most commonly affects the front feet but can affect only one or all the feet. Horses affected by laminitis badly stand in a characteristic way in order to take weight off their toes. The forelegs are stretched forward to put most of the weight on the heels and the hind legs are also moved forwards tucked under the body.

In severe laminitis cases horses may constantly try to shift weight from one foot to another and also resort to lying down on one side so that no weight is on their feet.

Laminitis horses often need to be forced to move as walking causes more pain. When they do walk they take short hesitant steps which becomes worse when they try to turn.

If you or your vet try to raise a foot of a laminitic horse so that they stand on three legs they may collapse with the pain. In such cases the pulse and breathing rate of a horse are likely to be increased, the temperature may be increased and there may be trembling and anxiousness.

Many people looking for laminitis make much of excess heat that may be present in the foot and a stronger than normal pulse at the level of the fetlock. These are useful signs but can be unreliable. As well as these laminitis signs there may well be pain just in front of the frog when hoof testers are applied.

Mild or chronic cases of laminitis may just show occasional lameness on rough, hard ground, a little stiffness rather than obvious lameness or a little sensitivity to hoof testers. Of course there may also be evidence of damage in the past in the form of laminitic rings on the hooves.

When there has been rotation of the pedal bone you may be able to detect a slight depression in front of the coronary band. As the pedal bone rotates it also reduces blood supply to the coronary band where horn is made so that the rate of production of new horn is slowed. This slowing produces laminitic rings in the hoof which are wider at the heel than at the toe. As this process occurs the hoof develops high heels and a long toe and the hoof wall becomes concave at the front.

In chronic laminitis cases the white line between the hoof wall and the sole may also become weaker and make the development of seedy toe and infection more likely. The sole may also become flat and nearer the ground than in normal horses.

Kudos once more to Nicanor for his victory on the turf yesterday. Wishing each of you a safe & productive day! Thinking of all the people as well as land, sea, & air creatures in the Gulf. Peace, Robyn

Early here, sun is 'just up' and it's lovely outdoors this morning:) Our 'normal highs' for this time of year are MIA and that pleases me no end..we should by now, be up around 100 and thusfar, highest has been 94:) Mostly in low to higher 80's..it's been great!

I hope yole have a great day today...help some horses...call, email and if you can, roll some nickels and help the rescue of your choice.

The old saw is that there are no stupid questions, but I think I've proved that is not true . It is stupid to hand people a needle with which to jab you.

Jonna , your frame of reference is too small.
In addition to the Irish , other nationalities use the apostrophe - notably the Scots , the Dutch , the Japanese , and many more, including large segments of the Arabic nations. It is usually an ellipsis or a glottal stop.

Not knowing how a person spells his name is hardly a grammatical error ; perhaps it's inattention to detail in places I've seen it written , but it's not grammatical. You are welcome to fault my memory but not my grammar. It's a simple question on how a name is spelled, one I asked many times in the English classes I taught.

Well the Irish claimed him anyway and wrote a song about it, which was quite a catchy little number.

Moving on to Royal Ascot, it was Ladies' Day and there were many beauties in evidence (most often of the four-legged kind). There were some stunning hats and those that were plain bizarre, but they got photographed so I suppose the wearers achieved their objective. Here are some pictures:

Those photos are great ! Very creative as usual , lol, and the Queen is lovely in lavender .

I remember reading an article during the campaign
when then Sen. Obama visited an Irish group in Pennsylvania I think , and they favored Sen. Clinton at that time.
He was very funny and charming and joked about his Irish name O'bama then ! I had forgotten that until your post brought back the memory. Think that's where I got it screwed up ?? lol, Jonna might have been correct !
I've never heard the Irish song - I might go to You Tube and see if it's there. Thanks for the pics. I never went to a race when I lived in England and I so wish I had !

    Morning Everyone....

    Happy Friday!!

Thanks, Debbie LA for the blue-ink-link! Interesting reading! Though Canada isn't the only country slaughtering our horses, there is MX...and I found it particularly interesting that he says in part, "It's a stretch to think that information on hundreds of thousands of unwanted horses that were never raised to be food, will be complete or accurate."

"never raised to be food" being the key words for me and all of US!

I was able to catch some of the Congressional Hearing with the CEO of BP on the Hill yesterday afternoon...I got in too late to see it all, but some tough questions were asked...they weren't answered very well...in fact, from what I saw, they, for the most part, weren't answered at all:/

Hopefully in time, regulations can be put in place to be sure safety measures which are costly, yes...but so very necessary to protect the human life, underwater life and wildlife in regions surrounding not just the Gulf but all shores, Hopefully someday, 'production' will be outweighed by 'safety'...what a novel idea.

I look forward to watching more of the US Open from *PEBBLE BEACH* today and throughout the weekend:) Many memories for this CA born and raised in the area of Monterey, Carmel, Salinas, Santa Cruz the first ahem, ahem number of years of her life:) That stretch of coast line is so very beautiful...I could sit and watch the waves come in all day long:) Somewhere in an album, there's a photo of me a hundred years ago taken beneath the 'Lone Cypress' near Carmel:)

So MANY of the golfers there are 'faves' of mine, too! Wheeee! Of course I'll be 'roosting' most for *PHILLY-MICK*...me and my BroinBarbaro, Daryl...he's our *# 1 FAVE*:) Eye-Candy for an older than dirt woman include Sergio Garcia (I got a photo sent via email of 'Sergioinasoot'...be STILL my heart) and Camilo Villegas he, imho, could easily qualify as a Ralph Lauren model!! sigh...Great weekend for Golf if you enjoy watching golf:)

I've had the BEST time this past week, sharing links to UTube clips of *ZENYATTA* with friends who are unfamiliar with our *QUEEN*:) Even found a link to an article from NY Times I could forward to them, with a photo of her 'diving right in' to enjoy her Birthday Cake....my friends are enjoying Z now, too:)

I hope everyone's Friday moves swiftly and uneventfully and yole have a great weekend, too!

Just blew a gasket to Senator Kerry's office. Yesterdays hearings were useless and a disgrace. Forget Tony "little man" Hayward, another inept useless CEO, and get to the point. You have got to fix this leak NOW!! Why hasn't BP briefed the American people on the latest efforts? What efforts? We and Hayward keep talking and the main issue, STOPPING THE LEAK ASAP,goes without action. Take apart Hayward LATER. He's useless. Innocent animals are dying, lives ruined, business gone FOREVER and what are we doing? The Gulf is drowning!! If the American people can see this why can't the govt? We continue the damn bureaucratic process that complicates things for people like Kevin Costner to try something. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!! What the hell is this country thinking!

    Enough from me!!

Posted by: Stu at June 18, 2010 5:16 PM

    ###Fren Stu,

I couldn't help but notice your frustration. I share it, and feel helpless. You ask, "What the hell is this country thinking?" I surmise that the answer to that is slowly dawning upon many of us.

I'm just a citizen, and this is my opinion based upon interest and observation. It is not meant to offend. Please take it for what it's worth. My answer to your question is, we are thinking: "Oh Lord, what HAVE we done?!?"

Concerning the explosion and resulting spill, there was too much delay and foot dragging right from the start. Several countries offered help within the first few days of the spill, and that help was turned down by our government.

This administration capitulated to restrictive regulations, and its first response was to look around for someone to place the blame upon, instead of doing EVERYTHING first to deal with the spill.

Sadly, recent events demonstrate that they think the only thing they can do now, is to redirect the ire of the American people to a "common enemy" (read BP). Instead of actually doing something about the spill, they are still scrambling to avoid their own responsibility for a gravely errant response.

And so, with...the thought, "Oh Lord, what have we done?" comes profound regret for putting our country into the wrong hands. We are now at the mercy of fools.

I hope we wake up, and remember that WE are the government. No matter who or what is to blame for the Gulf disaster, it is up to US now, to take responsibility for cleaning up the mess that began to sweep onto our shores way back in November 2008.

    Your FOB Fren, O

Before I offer an oil spill rant, don't know if anyone has been to the threads, but it seems Cavel has been sold and the license to do evil did not transfer with the sale! That site of unspeakable horrors is done.

##Stu, in the opinion of someone here on the Gulf Coast, yesterday was merely high theater. An opportunity for politicans from both sides to beat their chests, act outraged/sympathetic toward the plight of the Gulf Coast and all its inhabitants - animals and humans. Score some points with the voters back home. Make people feel good. Show their consituents they've got a handle on the problem and are puttin' it to the BP folks accordingly. Not saying BP shouldn't be held accountable for their role in this, as should the other companies involved and the government agencies responsible for overseeing all the above - but, could we maybe just keep the ship from sinking before we worry about reprimanding or suing its owner and others for not keeping it in good condition?

Every time someone in Washington speaks and every time I hear on the local radio and TV stations interviews with mayors, councilmen, governors, business owners, wildlife rescuers and others make statements and BEG for specific needs, it serves to show the contrast between sitters/ thinkers/"visionairies" and the actual people on the front lines of this disaster. Those "in charge" have no clue how to handle this which means they are alarmingly ignorant and inept. Alternatively and equally alarming, they do have a clue and are using this crisis to their own advantage. It's one or the other and arguments can be made for both possibilities. Guess the third possibility could be all the greatest minds in the world brought together to address this problem from day one, all the unsolicited and refused foreign offers of assistance, all the equipment requested by people who actually live in the affected areas and have a pretty good grasp on what needs to be done to protect themselves, are worthless or pointless.

Plugging the hole is a huge challenge, no doubt. Containing the oil before it reached the shoreline? From the methods I've read that were utilized in other places for other spills, a challenge but doable. Something not accomplished with words, however. And, now it's too late because the oil is here on the beaches and in the marshes and more is on the way.

This is like a horrendous car wreck, a head on collision with smoking engines, broken glass, torn apart vehicles, victims still inside. Emergency responders don't stop to ponder who caused the wreck, what could have been done to avoid it, what the monetary loss will add up to. They remove the freakin' victims and administer first aid. All the other B.S. can come later. That's where we are right now here on the Gulf Coast. All the talk, talk, talk, talk about what's been done, who's to blame, who's in charge, who's being put in charge, who was in charge and when, what will be done and who is going to pay, etc. etc. etc. is enough to make my head explode.

Don't remember if it was Gov Jindal or someone in the Mobile area had some oil suctioning barges in place - seemed to be doing a fine job. Coast Guard shut the work down till they could ascertain fire extinguishers and life jackets were onboard the vessels. Going onboard to do a visual was too obvious, they had to try and contact manufacturer of the barges. I love, respect and work for the military but jeez! I repeat: lead, follow or get the he** out of the way.

There are efforts afoot to schedule the hazmat suited workers walking the beaches during the day to nightime hours with their kitty litter pooper scoopers in hand. Someone finally figured daytime hot, nightime cool(er). But, the problem with that is the spotlights being used might be interfering with the nesting loggerhead turtles. I'm not sure right now exactly which schedule they are following. Bright lights are a problem when the turtles hatch, don't know what problem it causes to the eggs in their sand pits before hatching.

Every day the news is filled with the rippling effect of people's lives being altered by this spill. Every day the politicians sit back and vow to litigate or set up another committee to study the problem. One local shoreline community is taking matters into their own hands. They've seen just how responsive (NOT) the government or BP is being. They are stuffing hay into the webbing used for live Christmas tree sales. They've positioned long lengths of this stuff along their shoreline and as soon as the oil appears to be approaching shore, they are moving these booms into place.

I keep vowing to stop watching the news. The sense of sadness and loss is everywhere. The sight of another oiled turtle or pelican or other Gulf creature rips at your heart. Seeing burly fishermen break down and sob when they discuss their lost way of life, not just their source of income, but their very identity, is overwhelming.
    There's no escaping it.

    Good Evening, Everyone....

I have spent most of this day watching the US Open and have loved every moment:) Phil began today at +4 and ended up -1 :) Wheeeeee!!

I got a call from Daryl this afternoon...on his way to the Ranch to be with Warpaint and Dakota and was able to bring him 'up to snuff' with the happs at Pebble Beach.

Daryl and Margaret took Warpaint to the University of Minnesota this morning for an exam. Warpaint has had some lameness issues of late so he wanted him to be looked at.

I don't know if yole are aware of how Sherry became Warpaint's 'mommy'....When he was a colt he suffered a terrible mishap with a fence. Warpaint had a long piece of fence post in one of his front legs. His previous owner was going to sell him to a kill buyer...and of course yole know how Sherry felt about that!!

Sherry bought Warpaint and called a Vet to come see his leg. The Vet suggested putting WP down. Sherry called another Vet who had the same suggestion. Sherry called a third Vet who was willing to try and save Warpaint...and :) save him he did. It was a fairly long process, but that was eleven years ago and he's been just fine ever since.

Since arriving in Minnesota, however, he has much more freedom to move about and his shoes were removed, which Daryl was told today by the Dr. was not a mistake...Daryl was worried about that.

Warpaint's tendons...two of them in that leg have fused..that is the problem. There is a plan, however, to rehab him and the Dr. feels he may well be a good riding horse, still, after the process is complete. Daryl doesn't care a bit about whether Warpaint can be ridden...he just wants him to be a healthy happy horse.

WP will need to be stall rested for about three months, which will not please this horse so much, though he will be attended to and given SRS EXTRA ATTENTION on a daily basis...to keep him happy as possible while the inflammation and swelling in his tendons subside.

I think there is also some 'rehabbing' in his future, but not sure of exactly that process yet.

Daryl said the woman who took WP in her horse trailer to the University today, came by the ranch a few evenings ago to see how well he would get into and out of her trailer....Daryl told her there would be no problem, but she wanted to know for herself. She arrived and dropped the door, looked at Warpaint and said, "Well, let's see what you've got." Daryl dropped the lead rope and said, "Warpaint, get into the trailer, please." LOL!!! And he did...he got right into the trailer:) Sherry trained her boyz very well! The woman was quite impressed.

Daryl also said he was a complete Gentleman Horse today...they took blood and did all kinds of things to him and with him...and he was gentle and cooperative the entire time! Warpaint is a VERY GOOD BOY!

Daryl asked me to post this information so yole would know what's going on there in Minnesota and he'll keep us abreast of Warpaint's condition as this journey to wellness progresses.

Maybe we can send cards to Sherry's Boy..maybe they can adorn some wall near WP's stall somehow..if you'd like to send him a card the address is:

    Warpaint Van Wagoner-Smoliak

May the murderer of the 74 year old lady be brought to swift justice - by the law or the universe.

Today was blazing hot with oppressive humidity. Started yard work at 8:30 this morning picking up downed limbs and branches from all the wind we've had this last week and moving on to mowing, mowing, mowing when the grass was a little drier. Had to stop for several Gatorade breaks - but kept plugging away. Try to keep enough area mowed to be able to see the big snakes when they come out of the woods. There's still much trimming to be done but that will have to wait! Our daily summer storm is moving through right now - girl dogs in the house, big brother out in the air conditioned garage. I'm ready for fall already, assuming we can get there without a Cat IV hurricane coming through!

    Happy Father's Day Morning, Everyone!

In the 50's here this morning...which means perhaps a second day straight without a need for even a fan running! Unbeliveable, but I'm certainly NOT complaining:)

I watched most of the Open yesterday..Philly was living up to his nickname of "Phil The Thrill" as he began the day but he hung in there and remains at +1 this morning!

He had all of us watching holding our breath at one point in time yesterday...his ball landed on the Fairway but then took a dive over a cliff near the end of play, I think on his way to #18! There had been 'course' where his ball fell off the edge...but in January, 2005 in a terrible storm, that portion of the course fell into the ocean below. He climbed down the cliff, located his ball on a rock in a Kelp Bed...uttered something to the effect that he could chip it back up onto the course, but it wasn't worth the perilous position he'd put himself in to accomplish that. As he began maneuvering himself back up, he slipped and had to do some pretty fancy footwork to avoid landing on his behind in a bunch of seriously slimy Kelp in his WHITE PANTS! I think everyone with access to a TV screen was holding their breath for a few seconds....LOL! He saved himself though and we all breathed a big sigh of relief.

He went on with play, made a bad shot, his ball was in rough near a grandstand and then:) in true Philly Style:) he made a BIRDIE...you just gotta love PHIL!

I hope everyone has a great day today...if you're lucky enough to still have dad here, I hope you have a chance to spend time...via face to face or ma bell and for those of you who have lost dad...then hugs to yole...spend some time remembering:)

Happy Father's Day to two of the greatest sires on earth ---

    Medaglia d'Oro - Rachel's dad
    Street Cry -- Zenyatta's dad

( I doubt if I spelled Rachel's correctly, but I'm not going to look it up now - pressed for time. )

Happy Father's Day to all Dads today -- I'm remembering mine with much love . I hope your dad is with you to love today , but if you're like me , just honor him with memories. Happy memories.

    Happy Father's Day!

Unlike Mother's Day we celebrate on the same day.

It has been another beautiful day here. Royal Ascot sadly is over and I just realised I forgot to post the pictures from yesterday - and they are some of the best ones with the horses (and they are the real stars after all) looking particularly fine:

Zaidan, the two-year old who won the Chesham Stakes yesterday, is a Street Cry colt. There's a nice picture of him in the blue link from Royal Ascot day five photos.

Lynne , thanks for the (undeserved ) praise, I stole the idea from the db , lol . But it's a good one !

Liz UK , I have so enjoyed all the pics you send our way - we don't normally get such pics of places like Ascot ! I am aware of the speedy Zaidan , and going to watch his future for sure. Thanks again for the photos and updates. Sorry it's over !

I'm glad you enjoyed the photos. You may well be seeing Zaidan as his trainer Clive Brittain is really keen for him to go to next year's Kentucky Derby.

    Happy Birthday to our SANDRA!!!
    And many more happy returns!!

And I'm not sure how many Dad's we have here in the Barbaro Nation, but HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all!!!
And in loving memory for all those of your Dads who are already on "the other side".
I have a strong feeling that CHIEF & BUD SOVA are participating in a fishing derby today "up there" :).

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd . . . for each of you know you take me to where angels walk!
As our ANGEL DEE (miss you honey and many prayers headed your way) says, "It is AFFIRMED!"
    Indeed it is.

Holding hands, paws, and hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation!!

Babysat "Miss Pickles", our neighbor's senior doxie for a few hours today. AUNTIE JOAN ROYA - Miss Pickles sends you a doxie kiss and says "please rub my belly"!

LYNNE B. - Thanks for the update from Daryl!

Continued prayers for MOLLY & DEXTER!

LINDA NW FLA - Bring on Fall anytime Linda!!
Be careful of those snakes, ugh!! I know just what you mean about the yard work in this humidity, it takes all the enjoyment out of my time in the flower borders. The huge PA snows last winter were certainly confining but I tell ya I'm thinking they sure beat this humidity!

Please everyone hug all your furbabies for this auntie!!
Oh and, of course, Happy Father's Day, to DYNAFORMER, a proud papa! :)

Love you all! "Simply the best", yes you all are!!

Well, I'm late reading here tonite so I'm late in wishing Sandra - best wishes for a Happy Birthday!

Lou Ann, SNOW sounds wonderful! Devoted today to all inside chores! I must say, though, everything - plants, animals, birds - seems to be growing in abundance. One bird box is now on its second little family - I peeked in yesterday and saw a bunch of wide open little mouths wanting food! One family has already grown up and left home from there. Mockingbirds dive bomb the dogs in the backyard - guess babies are nearby. Purple martins are hanging around both houses way longer than usual. We watched a wren family on Memorial Day leave their home on our front porch - much flapping and chirping goes on when that happens. Don't know who is more nervous, the parents or us! Hummingbirds playing tag around front porch feeders. Bunny rabbits and squirrels all over the place. So, reckon the weather agrees with all the critters. Of course, the dogs are OK with it but spend alot of time guarding the air conditioned garage!

Hope everyone had a great weekend and Happy Father's Day to all the fathers (I always called mine Daddy!) who are here and all who are with us always in our hearts.

Hiya, FsOB! Wishing a happy Father's Day to all the FsOB who are dads. Likewise, I hope that Dynaformer was given some extra treats today. Those photos, which were bluelinked, showing Nicanor were very majestic.

Likewise, I am grateful to our FOB Liz from "across the pond" for posting the bluelinks to photos from Day Four & Day Five at Royal Ascot. Isn't Her Majesty the Queen radiant in that soft shade of blue? I thought her lavender-coloured outfit from earlier in the week was quite fetching, too.

Unless the cost is too prohibitive, I anticipate that Brent & I shall go to Belmont on Saturday the 26th for the autograph session on behalf of The Barbaro Fund. Who knows, perhaps we shall meet some other FsOB? That would be delightful.

Keeping all humans and the winged, fourlegged, and finned creatures of the Gulf Coast in my thoughts. Peace, Robyn

    #### To All who followed the Brennan Family via Caring Bridge: Anne B. posted a Caring Bridge update earlier this week. Anne has become a licenses massage therapist. It was impressive to see how well Anne & Terry's sons are doing.
    Happy Birthday to our Sandra!
To Liz in the UK: Zaidan is an amazing two-year-old. It would be cool if he could be in the 2011 Kentucky Derby. I thought that the filly Cill Rialaig was lovely.
To Carleen: Thanks for your kind words!
To Judy: Thanks as well for your kind words. Kudos to Canada for the proposed legislation on behalf of horses.
To Lynne: Please let us know how Warpaint's healing progresses.
To Joan: I am hopeful that the ferral kitty managed to bypass your car. I am truly sorry to read that your friend (or a lady from your community) was murdered. I hope that the perpetrators are apprehended and that justice is served.
To Skyler: Please know that I keep you in my thoughts. I hope that your neighbour's Huskies continue to bring you a smile.
To Margie: How are things in NM these days? ####

ALEX - A great day for you to be on the waters!! Hope it was grand and safe!!
And you also introduced me to "the Bohemia"!!
Almost ashamed to say I'm a local native just north and thought I'd heard of all the waterways in the area, oops!!
I just peeked in at the Cecil County tourism site (a great site, too!)to have a look and well I'll have to go dust off my atlas!!
The Bohemia looks gorgeous, Alex, and I do hope you had a grand day! Was this your first time kayaking??

    Evening Everyone....

Well...If *PHILLY-MICK* couldn't pull this one off, I gotta say....GOOD ON YA, GRAEME MCDOWELL!!

Thirty years old! He wins the US OPEN...his FATHER is there in the crowd...and rushes out, throws his arms around his son and says, "what a Kid you are." :) Needed Kleenex right then and there!! And Graeme gives one of the very nicest speeches I've ever heard! He thanks EVERYONE and is 'gobsmacked' that the crowd cheered him on...how gracious is that?! :)

I spoke with Daryl a time or twelve on/off today...and he feels the same way about him:)and of course, for myself..it doesn't hurt one bit that I think he's awfully 'toocuteforwords' :)

Daryl also shared with me that he himself would probably look TWENTY YEARS YOUNGER, if not for watching Phil play golf for so many years...LOL! I can certainly relate and so can anyone reading this, who cheers for Phil! I must find his website and leave a comment suggesting he MUST win the Open soon...because I am getting OLD and I want to see him win it before I leave here!

I hope everyone has had a great day today...tomorrow is Monday....geesh, Family, ANOTHER Monday!! :)

Hiya, FsOB, and a very happy Summer Solstice to each and every one of you. A bright new day has dawned here on the banks of the Thames. The river is gleaming and a tiny power boat has just darted downstream. The birds were already singing at 5:30 AM.

Wishing everyone a safe & productive day! Reaching out in spirit across the miles to all the people and wildlife of the Gulf Coast. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Margie in NM: My vote would be that you keep Ruby the Heeler. Love is never a common sense thing, is it? What if she gets to the new place 2,100 miles away and the bond there doesn't "take"?
To Lynne B.: I am sorry that I missed seeing Graeme McDowell's speech. Brent watched the Open for most of the late afternoon and we both like Graeme a lot. ####

For the first time since 2003 the 20,000 people at Stonehenge today at dawn saw the sun rise. Of course they haven't been there since 2003! It is also the start of Wimbledon. It is a beautiful day and promises to get better (what on earth is going on?)

    ### Robyn, everyone says Graeme McDowell is one of the good guys. The Irish must be thrilled skinny as they would say. I was listening to the radio in the small hours (yes I am mad) and I heard him win and his Dad said to the BBC interviewer that he would be having "a wee cup of tea" later to celebrate.

MargieNM....we love you...and your heart will always tell you what to do....thanks for your hard, dedicated work.

Posted by: joan roya at June 21, 2010 2:00 PM

    Morning Everyone,

Monday....Monday....but without them, there would be no Friday.

Robyn: I have never seen nor heard of Graeme McDowell before this weekend...but I won't forget him now:) I hope perhaps a sportscaster on your local news might show a bit of his speech, it really was from his heart.

Liz UK: "Irish Tea":) I have heard that expression before and I should imagine there were a few 'wee cups' being downed last night!

Margieeeeeeeee!! Hunny, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with your head, Margie! I vote for Ruby staying right there with you! But will support your decision whichever way. You are a good person, Margieeeeeeee!! The 'googies' are all very fortunate to meet you:)

I got it 'rong' yesterday, Family! I switched sires for two of my picks. Seabiscuit's sire was Ole Bob Bowers and John Henry's was Hard Tack...too much in a hurry I'm guessing! I did notice on Seabiscuit's pedigree that Man 'O War was his 'grampa':) Wow!!

Robyn et al: While Daryl and I spoke more often of Golf than anything else....He was out to see the BOYZ in the morning and again last evening:)He sees them everyday mornings and evenings.

He said Warpaint is doing fine in his stall..and is a SRSLY GOOD patient when it comes time for linament to be put on his leg, or salve in his eye (they determined he had an eye infection while at the University Equine Center on Friday) Daryl said that he watched him and as he approaches with the medicine on his finger, WP stands very still and allows him to put it on his eye. Warpaint is a VERY GOOD boy! I think because he's been through such a lengthy process of medical care/attention as a colt, he remembers and realizes people are simply trying to help him:)

WP is getting massages every day from one of his 'closest friends', a Physical Therapist who has taken to studying Equine Anatomy and she's just GREAT with both WP and Gunner!

Warpaint can't ever be turned out into a large pasture ever again:( but he could easily handle a half-acre situation and be happy with that, I'm sure and so is Daryl and everyone else...he will heal from this inflammation and eventually find himself outdoors again. Daryl walks him a little each day to allow him to have a 'pick of grass' as Alex says:)

As everyone can imagine, this has been a very emotional week for Daryl, he loves those BOYZ every bit as much as Sherry did and wants only the very best for each of them. Keep Unkle Daryl in your thoughts and prayers, as well, please.

I hope everyone has a good day today!
