    Barbaro Updates: 998

    updates are now here.

Update 6024: I am off to England, scheduled to return on Sunday. During this time we will not be updating this site. For the latest racing news visit: Paulick Report.

    Back on Monday!

Update 6023: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

Lookin At Lucky finally had his luck change, and another Preakness is in the books. While Lucky's win was not unexpected, First Dude and Jackson Bend's efforts to round out the trifecta were a little more surprising. First Dude showed he's more than just a colt saddled with an unfortunate name; he seems a likely Belmont threat. Lookin At Lucky will not be Belmont-bound, but he should come back to this coast for the Haskell. As he has yet to celebrate his actual third birthday, a bit of a breather seems a wise move. The television coverage was moderately better than the Derby (and a vast improvement over the Oaks fiasco), but still ended up in the 'could do better' category.

Meanwhile, Jackson Bend, who looked hopelessly out of gas in the Derby, proved he could stay beyond a mile and dug in to finish third. Caracortado played the part of Jackson Bend this time around - he simply could not stay the distance, but looked threatening near the top of the stretch. I'd love to see these two meet up again in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile - and, ideally, beyond that; a rivalry between the two could lead to an exciting Met Mile (if it happens next year, but more on that in a moment). Trainer Nick Zito is aiming to bring Jackson Bend back in the Haskell - perhaps the little horse has more depths than we realize at present.

Also worth a mention is Dublin, who seemed headed for the exits at the break, but came back to finish fifth; one wonders what he could be capable if he had some changes to his routine, as well as some better luck. And luck did not seem to be the issue for Derby winner Super Saver - the horse just looked tired, and his announced rest also seems like the obvious next move.

Attendance at the Preakness was up, after a big drop last year. The lure this year was unlimited beer for $20 in the infield. Granted, this was not good beer - for $20, I expect something at least half as good as this; perhaps a craft brewers' tent could be set up for the adults who would like to have some of the real thing while watching the races. Local brewers Flying Dog would be an ideal anchor brand (although I'd hate to see a group of college students after multiple, cheap Raging Bitches, much as I love the beer) - and Baltimore's Brewer's Art is well-placed to offer advice...but I digress.

Even without the Derby or Preakness winner, the Belmont should be a good race (albeit one that seems custom-designed for Ice Box). Other interesting possibilities include Drosselmeyer, Uptowncharlybrown and the Tim Ice-trained New Madrid; who doesn't like a horse named for a fault? If nothing else, the lines for the bathroom will be much more manageable.

While the question of who will go to the Belmont is an interesting one, the much larger issue hanging over NYRA is how - or if - they will remain in operation after Belmont weekend. Things are not looking good at this point. The situation is complicated in California as well; Ron Charles resigned as president of Santa Anita shortly after the news broke that the Oak Tree meet would no longer be welcome at the track (although what has been going on behind the scenes there is anyone's guess). Oak Tree could move to Del Mar, but the ouster from Santa Anita is an odd business; one wonders who is really making these decisions, and how many groups are involved. It makes picking the horses look easy.

Update 6022: A dreary morning this morning at Fair Hill. I had seven to ride for Michael Pino, and we stayed in the shedrow. All went nicely for a pretty straightforward start to the day.

Today is the day we will hear the sentencing for Ernie Paragallo: Paragallo to be Sentenced May 18.

Here is this week's ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Preakness, David Rodman, Damon Lann, The Rail, Nicanor, NBC, Joe Clark, ABR Radio, Andy Durnin, Lisa Grimm, Scooter Roach, Skip Away.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6021: Seven ridden Monday morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. A grey morning, but the rain held off until we were finished. All seven of mine went nicely for an uneventful (very good) start to the day.

Here is my assessment of Saturday's Preakness: Lookin at Lucky Proves a Worthy Winner.

Neither the Derby winner, Super Saver, or the Preakness winner, Lookin at Lucky, will point to the Belmont.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6020: Four ridden this Sunday morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. All went nicely, which was good because the last few days have worn me out!

I had a couple of great days down at Pimlico. It was a great chance to catch up with, and meet for the first time, people I have interviewed for my book. This included race caller Dave Rodman, Ed Fountaine, Barbara Livingston, Jay Privman, Joe Drape, Dick Jerardi and many, many more. I also got to meet Stakes barn security guy: Damon Lann, The Rail's Melissa Hoppert and Jessie Holmes, American Turf Monthly and Preakness program cover photog.

And we now know that Super Saver was not able to win the Preakness to add to his Derby win, and Lookin at Lucky won under new jockey Martin Garcia: Lookin at Lucky Wins the 135th Preakness Stakes.

Update 6019: Busy at Fair Hill again this Saturday morning for Michael Pino. Eight ridden, four of which breezed and two went to the gate for a little schooling. Now rushing around to get ready to head to the Preakness, from where I will be tweeting. It's a glorious day too!

Update 6018: Another long morning's work at Fair Hill for Michael Pino. I had nine to ride. And thankfully today all mine went nicely for a very straightforward start to the day. Now to prepare for an interview for my book, and then I am going to head down to Pimlico for today's racing.

Here is yesterday's 30 minute ABR radio show: Alex Brown Racing on the radio. Another fun show, we took a close look at each of the Derby horses that are now running in the Preakness, and also analyzed the "new shooters." Bob and Lisa also offer their betting strategies!

Here is this week's contribution to Eclipse Magazine: Alex Brown - 14th May 2010.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6017: Phew, a long morning's work for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. I had nine to ride, and then ponied one once I was done. And the day also included a spill. I came off my second horse and was pretty lucky not to get hurt. Six of the horses I rode were babies (2yos.) They all went very nicely and continue to progress and learn well. Yesterday I wrote this piece for The Rail that discusses the education of 2yos: The Education of 2-Year-Old Horses.

Here are the details of the Preakness draw: Super Saver Is Early Preakness Favorite.

Today at 2pm is the 30 minute ABR radio show, where it will be all Preakness discussion. Superfecta will help Andy, Bob and I analyze the field: Alex Brown Racing on the radio.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6016: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update, Preakness edition.

The Preakness draw will take place this evening at 5 pm, but post position is much less of an issue at Pimlico - especially as the field size has been decreased with the absence of Hurricane Ike, who is out with a leg injury. A Little Warm was declared out earlier in the week, much to my chagrin, leaving Schoolyard Dreams and Caracortado as the most interesting new shooters.

With rather limited time this week, here are our thoughts on the Preakness field - with Kentucky Derby alumni first:

    Super Saver
Derby winners like to win the Preakness - and even without rain, Super Saver should be well-placed to do so. Jockey Calvin Borel has experience winning the Preakness with Rachel Alexandra, but it's not always as easy for him to work his magic away from Churchill Downs.

    Paddy O'Prado
Yes, he ran much better in the Derby than I expected - but I still think he's more interesting on turf.

    Dublin
His seventh-place finish was respectable and his sire owned this race, but is he up to the challenge? D. Wayne Lukas has Northern Giant as well, if not.

    Jackson Bend
Had a terrible trip in the Derby, and clearly wants a shorter distance; the question is whether he's ready for the quick turnaround, given his effort last time out.

    Lookin At Lucky
Holds the dubious honor of having perhaps the second-worst trip in the Derby after the very game Ice Box; his slump has clearly been luck-related rather than talent-related - will the change in jockey help?

    New Shooters

    Aikenite
He'll probably need more speed to close on than he's likely to see on Saturday - with Hurricane Ike out, that's a less likely scenario.

    Caracortado
I'm a fan of the California-based gelding; this distance should be perfect for him. He's had bad luck in his two non-winning races and should be ready to go.

    Pleasant Prince
His sole victory came in a MSW last year. Granted, he hit the board in the Florida Derby and Derby Trial, so he seems to be improving, but I don't see this as his spot.

    Yawanna Twist
He only began his career in December, and he's been close in G3 company; it's a step up, but he could finishi n the money here.

    Schoolyard Dreams
He was a long way back in the Wood Memorial, but he should be coming into this race in a better position - a definite danger.

    Northern Giant
While he has an interesting pedigree and a bit of seasoning, he might be better off in a softer spot.

    First Dude
I'm really done with this joke, which isn't the horse's fault, but I don't see it happening for him.

Although the real world will continue to interfere with things racing-related here for a while, we'll still be checking in via Twitter - so look for the latest updates there. In the meantime, you have until Saturday to name Super Saver's half-brother - and tune in tomorrow to Alex Brown's show for more!

Official Superfecta Superfecta Prediction: Lookin At Lucky, Caracortado, Super Saver, Schoolyard Dreams

Update 6015: And another busy morning riding for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. It was a grey and damp morning which did not help much either! I had seven to ride, five of which were babies. So it was a morning that could have had all sorts of unpredictable occurances, but fortunately all went reasonably well. I finished up by ponying a horse (I ride the pony and jog a horse around without a rider) and that also went nicely. All in all a good but busy start to the day.

Here is my entry for The Rail yesterday: How a Horse Learns the Starting Gate.

Here is the Paulick Preakness Index for this week: PAULICK PREAKNESS INDEX brought to you by Vinery LTD: THROW OUT THE DERBY. The Preakness draw is today.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6014: Phew, another busy morning this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. I had seven to ride, and one to pony. One of mine also breezed an easy half mile. All went nicely. Rosie Homeister was by our barn to breeze one of the horses I usually ride. All in all a busy morning, but a good start to the day. After I was done I went to Prizzios, as usual, for a quick break a read of the Racing Form and a coffee. I also interviewed Peter Rotondo who works for Breeders' Cup in New York. Peter was with Edgar Prado during Edgar's first visit to Barbaro at New Bolton Center. Another great interview for my book.

Here is this week's ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Super Saver, Lookin at Lucky, Dublin, Paddy O' Prado, Caracortado, Schoolyard Dreams, Hurricane Ike, Eskendereya, Jacksons, anti-slaughter movement, Fair Hill, ABR radio.

And here is my latest entry for The Rail: A Day in the Life of a Groom.

Update 6013: Seven ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. And it seemed like a very long morning's work. But it wasn't really. All my horses went nicely, and while it was chilly weather to begin the day we did have bright sunshine so it was not too bad.

In Preakness news Derby winner Super Saver did an easy 3/8ths work this morning at Churchill Downs. Just enough to stretch his legs. And Derby favorite Lookin at Lucky will now also head to the Preakness. Martin Garcia will replace Garrett Gomez after Lookin at Lucky experienced traffic trouble for his third start in a row in the Derby.

    And please keep calling.

LOL...I thought, but foolishly, I might score a Number One post on this page....:) 'rong again' lynne!

Bobbie B: I'm sorry about your not so great experiences in Venice...hopefully, yes, Debbie will come away with happier memories:)

OK...off this computer I go...I must accomplish things today, darn-it.

We are somewhat in limbo, politically, at the moment with a hung parliament. We shall get a new Prime Minister sooner or later as Gordon Brown has just announced he will resign as leader of the Labour Party in September. Some deal will have to be done to ensure somebody has a majority in parliament and can therefore govern the country effectively. There is a lot of talking going on but nothing to show for it as yet. It keeps the media happy and occupied, if nobody else.

The Icelandic volcanic ash cloud is drifting south so I hope Debbie gets to Italy and back without any disruption.

everyone of his have felt this feeling...this loss, this heartbreak...but it does not make it easier...

Remember earlier today, I was suggesting perhaps hoping enough rain would fall so I'd not have to water outdoors...well...that old saying, "be careful what you wish for." holds true, Family! OMGoodness!! Thunder and SO MUCH HEAVY RAINNNNN! Nearly unbelieveable for May 10 here! And on news now, I just see they've gotten 12" of snow up Interstate 80 on the way over Donner Pass! Again..kinda 'unheard of' you should have seen the line at a gas station with all the tourists waiting to buy SNOW CHAINS...LOL...only for them, it's far from funny, I'm sure! Well..at least I won't have to water for another few days now..:)

I keep thinking of Joe and Cathy and how much they must miss Jules:(

Well...Am hoping yole have a good night, tonight...I hear the weather is far worse than mine in OK and some other parts of the country...Everyone stay safe/sound, please!

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I really enjoyed your story about the frequently unrecognized role of a TB's groom. Do you see Eduardo (Barbaro's groom) very often? Please let him know that we are all so grateful for all he did for Barbaro. Also, I am curious: Are there very many female grooms now?

Today I was saddened to read of the passing of Joe Shelton's beloved dog Jules. He mentioned Jules being asleep in the truck just within the past week or two. As our Nancy would say, "May Jules rest in peace. And may perpetual light shine upon him!"

To Alex, it is hard to believe that four years have transpired since Barbaro's injury in the Preakness. I probably don't say this frequently enough, but thank you for all you did for Barbaro and for all that you continue to do for North American horses. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Bobbie B: Yes, I miss seeing Otherlyn and Dee here over the past week. Hoping all is well with them both.
To Lynne B: Thanks for sharing Debbie LA's quick note from JFK in NY. I agree with Liz, I hope that the situation in Iceland doesn't affect Debbie's adventure to Venice.
To Liz in the UK: I saw the coolest photo from Cornwall in either The Hartford Courant or The New London Day yesterday. There was a mobile polling station, resembling what the travellers would reside in, stationed on a roadway. A lady was departing the polling station, with two dog leads in hand. She had the tallest Dalmatians that I've ever seen. Do you think that she was allowed to take the dogs onto the vehicle in order to cast her ballot? If so, that is just one more reason why I love England, Liz!
To Bobbie B.: Your experience in Venice mirrored mine in San Francisco in 1991. I had built up such dramatic expectations that I suppose it was quite natural that I was disappointed. I think I'd prefer to see Florence or Siena before visiting Venice, for many of the reasons that you cited.
To Joan Roya: Hoping that Peaches had a better day.
To Carleen: How is Ms. Tibby doing these days? ####

thanks Roblyn you always ask about my doxies...took Peaches to vet and they want her to finish up meds....she has bad bacteria in urine...but these meds can make her sick...we will try again and if she get sick...to call him...and change???

and heartbreaking about Jules...God Bless Joe and his family and his heart of gold.

but famblee...all of you have a heart of gold...

Liz, UK: I haven't heard any reports here of planes having difficulty....maybe they can take a 'scenic route' in the event of ash becoming a problem for them. It would be a bit of a 'hoot' I suspect, if they can't get home as planned or must fly a different route..Debbie will have even more 'adventures' to report when home again:)

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!

As our Angel DEE says, "It is AFFIRMED!"
    Indeed it is.

Holding hands, paws, and hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation!

Hugs, love, and prayers always, and especially for those walking the rugged path just now.

This night owl is drooping fast much earlier than usual tonight but just had to peek in at this sacred place before the zzzzz's win over completely.

Am suspecting that ANGEL DEE may be having computer problems???, we'll need to send rainbows her way!

Sweet peaceful restful dreams to SANDRA & dear BUDDY . . . . no "squeaks" in West Texas tonight :)

And always in loving memory of FOB CHIEF!

Hiya, FsOB! What a bright and cool morning has dawned here on the banks of a still Thames. I wish that you could all see the river's surface. Except for a few ripples in the area with strong current, the Thames is as flat and reflective as a looking glass. The ferries stand at attention in their docks at New London, waiting to begin the first runs of the day.

Wishing everyone a safe & productive Tuesday. The Preakness is fast upon us. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Liz in the UK: If I ever run for elected public office, I'll campaign on a platform that permits four-legged creatures in the polling stations with their humans! Perhaps this country would be more animal-friendly if that were the case.
To Lou Ann: Thanks for the tip about Dee and possible computer problems. ####

    Hi Gang.

Saluki rescues update: Suki left for her new home in Dallas on Sunday. She will be in a wonderful home with a rescued Borzoi. Trip is in his new home in Santa Fe. It was a rough start, but we're hopeful his new Mom can handle him. Nothing is nicer than watching a dog run and run and run. But due to his blood condition, Trip needs to be on a leash to avoid injuries.

We've heard nothing of Teddy the Great Pyr. We hope for the best for him.

    Morning All,

Robyn, HRH Tibby is wonderful, full of life and has 15 toy mice to play with. I call HRH because she can be out side taunting the birds, I hit the cat food can in the kitchen and she runs in to beat Skit, Skat and Boo too the food. I started feeding Boo in our home office because Boo will not eat around HRH Tibby.

Joan, here is the address for Joe and Cathy Shelton:

    15891 County Road 92C
    Woodland, CA 95695

I was looking at Jules picture yesterday. You could see the wisdom and love in his eyes. No wonder Joe will miss him so much. He is up in puppy park heaven with Buddy, Murphy, Chief and so many other of our furbabies. I'm sure Jules was royally welcomed by all.

Take care folks and have a good day.

Bobbie B: LOL...My uncle used to say, "I know, you're too busy eating bon-bons and reading dime novels"....I still use that expression often, all these years later..:)

Yes...emails/calls/snailmail letters...all important...the 'silent majority' is still hard at work and we'll never give up!

I'm so STOKED, Family!! I have learned that I LOVE researching the TB's...and have been asked to do just THAT:) by my friends at Safe Haven Horse Rescue here in no/california....they, as I've written here by now, so many times you're probably sick of reading, have *EXCESSORIZED* aka: *SESSIE* up there now since early February..she's Great Great Granddaughter to *SECRETARIAT*...and she arrived very emaciated:( via Contra Costa County Animal Control.

Today, Sessie is looking more and more like she SHOULD LOOK...and FEEL, too...she's feeling the LOVE and she's a very SWEET horse! She's got a new owner...a young girl who will board her there at Safe Haven and Holly has a 'twenty year plan' for Sessie, too! Sessie is going to be a seriously happy OTTB with a great new 'mom' who works at one of the local Veterinarian's offices in Cottonwood!

Safe Haven will be taking Sessie to the Horse Expo in Sacramento next month and are bringing *DRIFTER* (another horse who many of you have helped support there at Safe Haven) along, so our girl will have a 'barn buddy' to hang with for the weekend!

Linda called me this morning to ask if I would mind reasearching Secretariat for them, so they could do some 'Secretariat Speak' if people wanted to know things...well, don't you just KNOW:) I practically hit the ceiling here with so much excitement and eager anticipation of learning things about Big Red and putting them down on paper...Wheeeeee!! :)

And....once again...ALL BECAUSE OF *BARBARO*, Family!! It just never ceases to amaze me how many things go on all over this country 'all because of Barbaro'!!! :) and without TWR/ABR so much of it would never have or continue to happen...so a BIG THANKS to our Webmaster for allowing us to 'keep on keepin' on'!!

Everyone have a GREAT day today!

We are doing okay. Buddy has picked out a barcalounger that I guess will be his. Last night at bedtime I hid the big worm (or whatever it is) before we went to bed. He gets up about 6 am.
Of course, I have to get up when he does but at least I dont have to hear the worm squeak LOUDLY.
He got all his shots yesterday and heart worm stuff. He will be neutered the first of June. Oneof us needs to get a job.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I keep meaning to ask if you have an approximate date for your book's publication? I want to buy a copy for our local library, same as I did with Harriette's mystery novel.

Will the post positions be drawn tomorrow for Saturday's Preakness? I admit to avoiding much reading about or viewing of that gem in the Triple Crown, because it makes me think of Barbaro's injury.... Wishing everyone "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Sandra: None of my Huskies who passed on (and preceded Nikita) have ever left my heart. But with each passing year, I've built new memories, unique to Ms. Nikita. I hope that the same situation unfolds for you & young Buddy.
To Kathy B.: I wish I knew how to post photos here, we do have a few digital ones of the river. Please feel free to send me an e-mail and I'll send some to you.
To Carleen: I love it that Ms. Tibby is actually HRH! She sounds like quite the alpha female.
To Lynne B: Hoping that the sinuses are improving with each passing day.
To Margie: Wouldn't you know, I was thinking of you this morning and wondering about Suki, Trip, & Teddy. I sure hope that dear Teddy is being treated better by his so-called human. ####

    Joe for Tuesday, 5/11....I forgot!!

Tuesday, May 11th... I always thought Twitter was what my heart does after a meal at Hometown Buffet. But I am getting dozens of e-mails, saying so and so is following you on Twitter. Sorry, but I did not put myself on Twitter. There is just no time to tweet.

But I am on Facebook now. Which is complicated. Trying to find my way. A busy place. Like a crowded lunch room at junior high. What fun though. Seeing the faces of those who write us letters.

We are getting a new computer, and my response time should be faster. At least that is the plan.

Hundreds of letters yesterday concerning our dog Jules. I am replying to every one. Thank you very much for taking the time to write. Your support means the world to us.

Often I am asked, where are all the horses? Our population down to a very managable 82. Just a few months ago, in mud and rain, we had 126 horses outside our door. It was crazy. Insane. Feeding would take 4 hours.

Adoptions have been steady, but the real reason for our population decline is our foster homes. From spring till autumn, foster families provide for more than 60 of our horses. Our grass is already gone. But many of our foster homes have year round irrigation. Also shelters from the sun. There are kids who bring treats. Horses on our ranch push and shove, trying to get a spot on a shuttle van to a foster home.

We welcome new foster families in Brentwood. Also Marysville. Placerville. Watsonville. (lots of villes in that paragraph)

It is Tuesday, and chores are forever. A cold rain yesterday, but today could be 71 degrees. Delicious hot coffee from Dunkin Donuts. A bowl of Rice Chex, with a soggy banana. Enjoy your we love our DVR Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. Aretha on the oldies station...

    Morning All:)

Joe for Wednesday is 'still coming' not posted as of yet.

Robyn H: I'm honestly not sure about these sinuses:/ The Rx I took was a five day round and supposed to continue working for another five days after finished...thusfar, not feeling as bad as before..but not feeling so 'great' either:/ thanks for asking, Robyn:)

Bobbie B: Heck, Bobbie...it wasn't a big deal, Buddy's toy, I mean....How could I NOT get him a good squeaking toy? :) He's my 'nephew' just like his big brother, Chiefster was! Somehow the perusing through the doggy toy aisle wasn't a bit 'painful' 'cause I know Murphy was right there in my heart pushing me toward the toy I found...it has a SRSLY GOOD squeaker inside! I sure wish I'd thought to get Sandra some earplugs though!! LOL!

Seems we FINALLY are in for at least a few days of more 'typical' May weather and temps here...geeze, it's way past time! I think by Friday, up to nearly 90 degrees! Of course by July, I'll be here lamenting about how horribly HOT it is..there's just no pleasing me, I guess! LOL!

I've had a pretty interesting time doing research on Secretariat for Safe Haven:) I wish I had his groom's book...I bet there's a WEALTH of information in those pages...the most fun for me to read, normally, are the 'barn stories':) Every horse has their 'barn stories' and I really get a kick out of them, too!

    I hope yole have a great/grand/wonderful Wednesday!

    # Lynne ,
Using some of your spelling tips , you are still
grate , grrhet , greaat , and great.

Good Late morning to you , all you Barbaro peoples,

How you doing ? Fine I hope. I am fine . The weather is fine. Well , enough of that.

Horses are not doing so fine. They are being
shipped to slaughter , horrible slaughter.

Do you know your President's phone number ?
For the plebian public like us , not having his
private cell number , we call

    1.202.456.1111

and we need a phone that doesn't charge for long distance by the minute, cause we wait on hold , 4 or 5 or up to 15 minutes is what I've found.
But I think, while on speaker phone and doing other things while waiting ,

I think - the horses in the slaughter line would love to wait 15 more minutes.. .. so it is all relative...
If you can't call, you're at work or whatever prevents you , a

    quick email would do...
    google
    contact the white house
and a quick form pops up and it's so quick and easy , not long or time consuming.
Tell the Prez to sign an executive order to stop shipping American horses to Can. and Mex for slaughter.

If enough of us call ,or email , we might get a message through - please , please do this, please.
Thank you , and if horses could talk
( excepting Mr. Ed ) they would thank you too.

Here's Joe for Wednesday....and once again, *GOOD IS TAKING CENTER STAGE* at Joe's:)

Wednesday, May 12th... In the big city, a million stories. On our 30 acres, two million.

A letter from Brianna, age 16, and she lives just outside of San Francisco. This is what Brianna had to say: I watched the Kentucky Derby. Horse racing gives me the creeps. Whipping a horse to make him run faster. How is this allowed? My boyfriend keeps telling me to chill. Things are the way they are. But I want to do something positive with my life. Beginning right now.

I am bringing you $300.00. I am making my boyfriend drive me to your ranch. Joe I love horses more than anything in this entire world. I wish I could take all the injured race horses and care for them. I told my mom to start playing the lottery. I need lots of money. When I come to your ranch could you teach me some stuff? I know you are busy. Someday I will have my own rescued race horses, and I need to learn. Yours truly, Brianna.

A few days later, on a windy Sunday, here comes Brianna and her boyfriend Scott. It was quick. The way Brianna fell in love with our gelding Burning Blur. We call him Blur.

Or maybe it was Blur who fell in love with Brianna. In our yard for his tub of supplements, Blur ignored his feed and would not leave Brianna alone. He was her shadow. Followed Brianna everywhere she went. Blur gave a little cry when Brianna went back to her car for a camera. He thought she was leaving.

Burning Blur came to us over a year ago, with major race track injuries. His recovery has been slow. Blur has kept to himself. Not really friendly with other horses. He tolerates me, only because I pass around tubs of grain.

But with Brianna. It was like a movie star came to our ranch. I have only seen this a few times before. A horse goes nuts for a human. And that human has always been a young person.

Brianna is now the owner of a former race horse. I listened as she told her mom on the phone, I have my own horse mom. His name is Blur, and we love each other. I am bringing home pictures to show you.

Blur watched as Brianna and Scott drove away. Finally he returned to his tub of feed.

Blur will remain with us. He was going to anyway.

In a letter the next day, Brianna wrote: I am so so so so so excited. I told everybody at school about Blur, and showed them pictures. When I own my own ranch, it will be called The Burning Blur.

And now you are going to think I am a wacko old man. (many of you think that anyway) But also the next day, when I brought Blur to our yard for his supplements. He was much more difficult to handle. Blur kept looking down our driveway. Like he was wishing for Brianna to show up.

And since her visit, he is different. A changed horse. Blur found his someone.

Hiya, FsOB! A bright blue new day has dawned here on the banks of the Thames. It's a beuatiful, albeit nippy one.

Last night as I was almost in bed, I heard Ms. Nikita make one of her Husky noises signalling a four-legged visitor was on the deck. It was "Ole Krazy Kat" (my nickname for Smoky), my neighbour's very tall and sleek cat who looks like he's wearing a tuxedo. He had also visited me as I arrived home late from work last night. Didn't Barbaro like cats?

Wishing everyone a safe & productive Thursday. I sure am glad to see that Barbaro's resident angel, our Dee, is back on-line again. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Bobbie B: Thanks for your late evening note. May you seize the new day!

Joe for Thursday...for our Lil'civilwargal who is hopefully having the time of her life in Venice, Italy!

And Family, as I read this one...the need for Adoption Facilities for these TB's when finished with racing careers...and also a need for responsible breeders/owners presents itself in a 'big way'...at least it did for me:(

Jonna has shared horror stories of what happens to Greyhounds when they're finished at tracks, too...and once again it all comes down to people not 'shivingagit' about those four-leggeds, whether canine or equine when they've finished with them:(

I know not all horse owners/breeders just 'throw them away', but obviously NONE should just be cast off like an old pair of sneakers! And..it's not just the TBs, it's quarter horses and who knows what other breeds end up being put into such 'events' as Mexican Rodeo...srsly chaps mai hide! And I see also here, that even cows and goats are abused!

Thursday, May 15th... Memorial Day weekend approaching, and mexican rodeos will be held all over our state. If you have ever seen the disgusting videos, you know of the rampant animal abuse which takes place. Not just with horses, but with cows and goats too.

We have been working with authorities for over a year. Trying to help these animals. Since the spring of 1998, Tbfriends and friends of Tbfriends, have rescued 41 horses from mexican rodeo. Many were horribly lame. Some rebounded, and have become wonderful riding horses.

Whenever I write about mexican rodeos, there are e-mails blasting me for being prejudice. But this is not about race. This is about treating animals with respect. This is about right and wrong.

Hopefully, on Memorial weekend, we can help a few horses.

There are letters asking where do rodeos get their horses?

For free from the internet. Craigslist the number one producer.

Outside of Stockton, a rodeo dealer. Usually on a Monday he has used up rodeo horses. Most are sold to slaughter in Mexico. We have purchased horses from this man in the past. He said we can buy from him this year too.

On our ranch, we still have 5 horses from mexican rodeo. They are forever lame, and are only available to companion homes.

Two years ago I was shocked to discover. You can find lots of former race horses at mexican rodeos. These poor horses with no where to go after their racing careers. Rodeos gladly accept them.

It is Thursday, and later we could reach 80 degrees. Flies starting their engines. Careful not to fall over backwards in your chair, but all e-mails have been answered. If you have recently wrote us and not received a reply, please resend. Your good thoughts and kind words concerning our dog Jules have been a blessing. Thank you. Enjoy your grass is fading fast Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Beach Boys on the oldies station...

The Beach Boys are just right for me , Joe, I've a week planned in June for the beach, yippee. I need it.

I too hope Debbie is having a blast in Venice. I hope she loves it and has lots of fun.

Morning all you Barbaro heads, I'm here , late morning - just beating noon - as usual.
It's hard to comprehend what all Joe sees and deals with on an almost daily basis.
When I start thinking I have it hard , emailing and calling and begging the same little aides,
I need to think of Joe and what he does.

Thank God for Joe , and for people like him , who help and don't quit , don't give up.
And thank God for the FOBs , each of whom works for horses in the way she/ he can -
I'm proud to be a part.
Prayers to all who need them - and a big hug ()

:) *BEACH BOYS*....First live concert I ever attended was to see those Boys:)

In Sacramento...at the Memorial Auditorium...in those days the tickets were all the same, I guess, i.e., money-wise and you got to sit where you wanted...depending on how early you got to the venue...my friend, Jeannie and I got there FIRST and we sat FRONT-ROW-CENTER...OMG!! Rocking out with those *BEACH BOYS* on-stage right in front of us! Great memories:) If I remember right, the ticket price was just $20.00...of course I only brought home roughly $55.00 a week...'cause minimum wage was somewhere around $2.00 back then in the 'dark ages' of the early SIXTIES....LOL!!!

I hope everyone has a good day today, HAPPY FRIDAY EVE:)

Here's an up-date about Sherry's Boyz in MN I thought yole would enjoy reading:)

Hi everyone. I had hoped to include a couple pictures with this update on Sherry's horses but the weather has been terrible for the last week. Finally, lots of rain. Minnesota has been experiencing drought conditions for 3 years but this last week the faucet has certainly been wide open.

Warpaint continues to improve. He has been feisty, in good humor. He actually was prancing when I took him and D for a short walk yesterday. Another walk was scheduled for today but the rain was really coming down so no walk. They are still in the round pen attached to the barn so they've been staying out of the rain and keeping dry. It's been cold at night so I don't want them to get wet.

Tomorrow it's supposed to clear and we are headed for temps in the 70s then 80s by early next week. Sunday I'll take the boyz into town and run them through the car wash! LOL! They are icky dirty, rolling in the dirt in the barn. Yeah, bath time Sunday. Along with Gunner.

Dakota loves his new environment. He is feisty, fun loving and curious. Warpaint...............nothing escapes him. He is one alert boy. Checks everything out. Both boyz know Uncle Daryl has treats so I get "attacked" as they search all my pockets.

Both boyz get great nutrition as Margaret makes sure they get only the best.

Looks like we are headed for good weather so I'll get them cleaned up and take some pictures of them with our beautiful foliage in the background and send them along.

    Daryl

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I loved your article about educating two-year-old horses. But I was gobsmacked to see that you had a spill this morning. I hope that you aren't too sore now.

Gosh, the Preakness is fast upon us. I recall four years ago telling my boss, when he asked me which horse I'd picked for the Preakness, that I wanted the "horse that won the Derby". I actually couldn't recall the horse's name. And the rest is history....

Wishing you all "ACN"! And may we all rise to seize the new day. Peace, Robyn

Hiya, FsOB! Yikes, I overslept on a grey amd rather dismal-looking morning. But nonethless, TGIF!!!! If I can't post again before the close of the weekend, may Nicanor have a safe & victorious run in the Dixie Stakes at Pimlico. And may all horses safely cross the finish line in the Preakness. Alex, please hang on to the reins when you are training the 2-year-olds, OK? Peace, Robyn

    #### To Angel Dee: Rainbows back to you, our Resident Angel of The Barbaro Nation!
To Jane: Great seeing that you posted last PM. I echo your safe wishes for all horses and riders at Pimlico (and everywhere) tomorrow. ####

Posted by: Stu at May 14, 2010 2:01 PM

    Hello everyone,

I wish all of you and your loved ones a good and safe weekend. And for the horses running this weekend, extra wishes going for you and your safety.

I had my first chemo yesterday and I am doing well. No side effects, yet, but I'm certain they will come. I will cut my long, thick, red Irish hair tomorrow to a really short style so it will not be so traumatic when I lose it all, which they told me yesterday will be shortly after the second treatment, scheduled for May 27, and I may see some loss before that. So I decided to do it on Preakness Day. My hair is being donated to a couple of different causes.

Please take time today to make your calls, etc. Let's do all we can to make our horses safe.

    Love to all.

SKYLER: Warm thoughts with POSITIVE outcome surround you, dear Sisterinbarbaro!! I hope the woman fortunate enough to be wearing your Irish locks will have NO idea of just how special...TRULY SPECIAL a person donated them, nor the circumstances under which they were donated...but nonetheless, Skyler, she'll feel EXTRA beautiful, of that I have no doubt whatsoever:)

Prayers and positive energy 'zooming' your way from the westwing! xxoo

It's another "GOOD TAKES CENTER STAGE" Day at Joes:)

Friday, May 14th... Marisa is 6, and she lives in Vacaville. At our front gate she was quiet. Shy. Finally Marisa asked me: Did Santa bring you all these horses?

Matt is 11, and he lives in Elverta. Two weeks ago, in our yard, it was pouring rain. Matt said to me: Your horses are dirty. God is giving them a bath.

Kaitlynn is 13, and she was visiting us from Foster City. Kaitlynn said: Ten years from now, Miley Cyrus will be on the oldies station.

I was showing Katie how to give bute. Katie is 12, and she lives in Auburn. The gelding Devils Tears is injured from the race track. As he was swallowing his medicine, Katie said: Good boy. You can have a sucker when you leave my office.

Brianna is 16, and she lives near San Francisco. On a recent visit, Brianna said: The way you write, I figured you looked like an old hippie. I was right.

Reid is 9, and she lives in Sacramento. Reid told me: I like Eggo waffles too. But my mom said no when I asked for coffee.

Madison is 15, and she also lives in Sacramento. At our front gate Madison gives me a still warm apple pie. Madison warned: If you toss this pie in the air, you and I are going to have issues.

Brea is 11, and she was visiting from Fairfield. Brea was brushing a very skinny gelding. She told him: You need to go to Dennys.

Sara is 9, and she lives in Concord. In our yard Sara said: Horses smell good. Better than my dad.

Joe Farnham is 99. Imagine. A few months away from the big 100. Joe has a house down the road from us, but he is currently staying in town. On a recent visit Joe Farnham told me: Main Street Cafe has the best breakfast around.

Well okay then. Some day soon I will give Main Street Cafe a try.

    The little moments.

Have a happy weekend. The weather is suppose to be beautiful.

    ## Skyler , I'm happy to see you post , but sad you have to face this thing. But I know you will persevere and win ! I'm praying for you.
What a drag , losing your hair - but since it's in the good cause of medication to make you well, I hope you can keep your good outlook you have now.
Buy some cute hats or a Raquel Welch wig.... I always wanted to look like her...lol, best wishes to you and your hubby , hang in there and , hugs.

    ## Stu , what a happy post , thanks for a day brightener , and best wishes to the little grandson, Cloud , and , to you too.

    Hey everyone , I'm here , almost 11 am but here !
Starting emails today , I called yesterday. Hope you are able to do some today too , according to your situation. I know many of you are now at work
and really can't . At least you are lucky if you have a job !

Is Super Saver going to win ? or is Lookin at Lucky or some other horse going to take the Preakness ? I have no special attachment to Super Saver but I would like to see a triple crown winner ,
Hope all of you have wonderful days , and TGIF !

Obviously, I didn't mean I 'hoped' the woman fortunate enough to wear your Irish locks would have no idea of how special you are...obviously I didn't mean hoped she wouldn't know.... I HOPE somehow she CAN know of how special you are, Skyler....anyway...I imagine somehow she will know....how could she NOT know:)

You remain in my thoughts/heart/prayers, Dear One...and so do Joe, Devon, Emma, Alex and KooKooLove. I love you, Skyler!! xxoo

I posted on the DB but I wanted to say here that my goal in this journey is to educate more people about horse slaughter.

When you go for these treatments, each time a medicine is given, or someone comes to talk to you, they always ask your name, DOB, etc, to be sure they have the right person. They also ask what I do for a living. Rather than say I'm a meeting planner, I tell them I work for the horses. This starts the conversation going and not one person I spoke to yesterday was aware of what happens to them, that slaughter even existed. So I'm making up lists for them so they can join our cause and call/email/fax.

I now believe that this is one of the reasons God blessed me with this journey....it's to get people on our side, more people to help, in a place I never would have gone to had it not been for this gift, this opportunity.

We'll get our horses safe. I know we will.

    ## Jane ,
I know well the misery of regrets of the heart - with beloved animals-- when we go back over and question ourselves with ' what if I had done ...."

And it never pays , never , we can't change it , although we wish, we yearn to , if we could ...
And I wish I could hug you tight too...... a sort of sisterly - bear hug , and say ' feel better'.

And you Skyler ## , I wish many blessings on you, and to you and yours. And I wish this time will hurry by and you'll be well. And you will have gained many converts to Barbaro's cause during this time. And I know your lovely hair will go to a good cause.

    ## Stu , when I posted to you earlier I didn't know it was your birthday , so here is an amended post ....
Happy Birthday , dear brother - in - Barbaro, and may you have many more , and have a wonderful birthday evening - hope you celebrate with lots of goodies like cake , etc.

Run like the wind , Nicanor , tomorrow from your lucky number 13 that Rachel had last year in the Preakness. I hope it will be as lucky for you in the Dixie Stakes , and you win ! But best of all , be safe , come back safe , beautiful boy. My heart is with you.

She's doing GREAT there...thanks to Linda R's 'Magic Mush' and all the great volunteers who take time to be sure she's well fed and loved on and bathed and groomed...along with many of YOU who sent along dollars for her board and care and vet bills, too! Today, she's bein' a HAPPY GIRL!who only needs roughly another 100-150#'s! She looks 'MAHHHHVALOUSSSS':)

I thought it might be fun if we send along a Birthday Card for this beautiful girlie...so, if you'd like to participate, here's the address:

We are here because of our Beloved BARBARO's legacy. But here is a horse who's tragic fate, and resulting legacy should also, most appropriately SHOULD be celebrated today...and yet, it is an ironic testimony within our sport, that so many horsemen and fans DO NOT KNOW THIS HORSE:

    PREAKNESS (USA) b. H, 1867

Owner: Duke of Hamilton/Milton H. Sanford
    Breeder: A. J. Alexander
    State Bred: KY

At 3: Won Dinner Party S. (Baltimore)
At 4: Won Westchester Cup (Jerome Park), Maturity S. (Jerome Park)
    At 5: 2nd Long Branch S.
At 6: Won Manhattan H., Grand National H., Long Branch S., Jockey Club H.
At 7: Won Jockey Club H.; 2nd Saratoga Cup
At 8: Won Saratoga Cup (dead heat with Springbok, NTR Saratoga for 2-1/4 mi [3:56-1/4]), Baltimore Cup; 2nd Jockey Club H.; 3rd Fordham H. (dash; beat SURVIVOR)

At 7: NTR June 13, Jerome Park, 10F in 2:12, NTR Baltimore, 14F in 3:08-1/2.

Winner of Pimlico’s first Stakes (Dinner Party), and namesake of the Preakness Stakes.
Purchased by Sanford for $2,000, the top price at Woodburn yearling sale.
Sent to England 1875, where he was sold to the Duke of Hamilton.
Became tough to handle as an older horse, and after one fit of temper was shot & killed by Hamilton.

The incident caused a reform in English law which governed handling of animals.

    ..................................................

Remembering PREAKNESS, and our precious champion BARBARO, today. We honor and celebrate your legacies of Life.

God speed and protect all who run today. Oh Lord God, thank You for Your magnificent creation...thank You that we may know them, and enjoy their spectacular spirits of Grace, Strength, Courage, and Beauty. Please keep them safe.

    Your FOB Fren, O

Today marks the year since Rachel Alexandra won the Preakness - the first filly to do so in nine hundred million years -- so I want to remember her great achievement since she will be giving up her crown when another horse good enough to win it crosses the finish line today . You are a wonder Rachel ,

and I don't know who you are pulling for today , but I wish them all a good race and safety , always come home safe first and foremost .

Good luck to all the horses , I hope the best one wins, not always the case is it ? ,

I guess I'll pull for Calvin and Super Saver , since Calvin is Rachel's jockey and Super Saver could maybe make a triple crown !
But I like the looks of Paddy O'Prado , and I have always liked Dublin -

so it's just go round and round !
Good luck to you and your choice , and may they all be safe.
And a safe home to Nicky in the Dixie !

Posted by: Bobbie B. at May 15, 2010 7:04 PM

Bobbie, I thought of you today and your love of Rachel. I understand how you feel, although mine is with Z. Both of us are winners, ya know?

    Good Luck to Nicanor

Posted by: mj at May 15, 2010 8:05 PM

Prayers for safe races for all horses and jockeys today. Go, Nicanor! Maybe y'all know this, but saw on HRTV earlier they will broadcast the Dixie Stakes following the Preakness which NBC has, I guess, broadcast rights to. So I'll be hollerin' for Super Saver and then switching afterwards back to HRTV for Nicanor - even though the race will have been over for awhile!
Thoughts today of Barbaro turn to what might have been and what is because of this great spirit, this Champion. Love you forever, Barbaro. Hugs to all on this anniversary of the painful day that "birthed" this famblee. Hugs to all for what has been accomplished because of Barbaro - and what is yet to come.

Lou Ann:) Lookin At Lucky won y'day...I was happy for Mr. Baffert! First Dude was second and Jackson Bend, third...ya know, you can always find those results at bloodhorse.com if no one is here when you're looking:)

We've got 'hazy' skies this morning...very high clouds moving in and rain forecast for tomorrow and early Tuesday...temps so mild still, I'm loving that part! Should be into the 90's by now..and I think today is just low 80's with much cooler temps tomorrow and Tuesday!

I'm glad all the horses came home safe yesterday. I'm glad, too, that our Alex found himself a ride there..so he could be a part of it all:)

Dee:) It is ALWAYS a pleasure to see you here, Angel Dee!

I hope everyone has a great Sunday!

    # Kathyb , we sure are lucky , just as you say.
People might say there have been better horses on this earth, but I haven't seen them. We are blessed to live in the time of our two megastars.

There are arguments for so many , if you wish to indulge , like of course our Barbaro - whom I exempt as too special with a purpose far beyond racing ,--
arguments about Secretariat , Man o'War , Citation, Native Dancer , Kelso .... the list of the greats goes on ...
But in our life time ( so far ! )
Rachel and Zenyatta have drawn me in , thrilled me beyond limit , and made me watch racing again, even when I'm scared I pay attention.

Men honor them , women love them and pull for them , little girls even ... little girls who usually don't care about racing =--- they write love notes to Rachel I've read - and I know that must be the same for Z - her fans are legion.

Yes we are lucky my fren , we live in the time of Barbaro - teaching us how to treat horses - and the age of Rach and Z - teaching us how to love them.
    Bye now,

    Dear Fren Lou Ann,

So glad that Fren Lynn Brown posted the race result for you. I had posted on for you, late last night, but it seems to have disappeared. Perhaps it got swept away with the "Wendonian-clean-up."

Have a beautiful Sunday, now that we have all been able to exhale, after yesterday. It's always a good day at the races when no one is hurt.

So thankful that NICANOR is OK today. He placed 6th in his race, after setting the pace awhile. I am hoping that they might decide to keep hin on turf, and put Rosie back on him at some soon point-in-time. She is a good jockey, and I really do think (feel)that he responds best to a woman's spirit. Win or not, gotta Love the Boy!

Hiya, FsOB! I am confused about the outcome of the Dixie Stakes. Can someone please clarify whether Nicanor came in 6th or 2nd?

Gosh, another Preakness has passed. There was an article in one of CT's newspapers, lamenting the fact that it's been so long since the last Triple Crown win has occurred. It was especially sad to see the article's note for 2006, stating that Barbaro "DNF" (did not finish).

Speaking of Triple Crown winners, I saw the trailer for the film about Secretariat that will open this Fall. Diane Lane will star as Penny Chenery and John Malkovich will protray the trainer (whose name I can't recall). This film looks like a winner, folks, really & truly! There are superb shots from the starting gate at Churchill Downs. Seeing the local audience's response, this film is really going to be a winner. I can't wait!

    Wishing everyone "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### A belated happy birthday to Stu!
To Jen: Thanks for the good news that the MO bill was unsuccessful.
To Skyler: Your generousity is an inspiration to us all, Skyler. I am sorry that your treatments will cause hair loss, but your beautiful donation will surely brighten someone else's life considerably. Your courage and your voice on behalf of horses truly exemplify "being like Barbaro". Please know that we are all with you in spirit, Skyler.
To Otherlyn: Great seeing you back. Kudos to your daughter on her commencement. We've missed you here!
To Dee: It's always a pleasure to have our Resident Angel here.
To Sandra: Please let us know how Buddy is doing following his surgery. I am glad to see that he has a canine friend (Nadya).
To Jane: My sympathies upon the one year anniversary of BeBe's passing. Their lives are far too short....
To Lou Ann: I saw young Gophie this afternoon. I try to keep sunflower seeds plentiful, otherwise the flowers are at risk. He doesn't bother the catmint or the clematis, fortunately.
To Bobbie B: Thanks for the address and I'll try to send you some pics in the next few days. May Sky Away rest in peace. ####

    # Robyn , our sweet Nicanor came in 6th. He ran well and near the lead but tired in the stretch. He came home safe and sound as far as I know.

Good night , frens and famblee , I hope your weekends were memorable ... in a good way I mean, lol ,
Sweet dreams , and hold your loved ones near...

Alex, please don't get too fatigued, OK? Wishing everyone a safe & productive Monday. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Bobbie B: Thanks for confirming that Nicanor came across the finish safely in 6th place last Saturday. ####

    JOE FOR MONDAY:)

GOOD TAKES CENTER STAGE FOR A MONDAY...

Monday, May 17th... The following letter came from Kristal, who lives in Winters: I joined Costco so I could buy John Lyons feed. My two geldings have never looked so good. But I am now addicted to Costco chicken pot stickers. I eat two packages a week. I blame this on you Joe.

Kristal you should try their garden egg rolls. The best. I could eat them all day.

Oh wait. This is a horse website, not a lets make everybody hungry website.

So I should tell you there were 3 adoptions over the weekend. Mojo has a wonderful new home with McKenzie. The beautiful thoroughbred mare Kit Kat (we call her Kitty) is now a companion in Penryn. And Tara came all the way from Reno, and she quickly fell in love with our gelding River.

Horses coming, horses leaving, we need a traffic cop to work our driveway. We said hello to Bobby Flay, a young thoroughbred gelding from the feed lot in Wilton.

One day soon, I will show you his butt. After all, it was his butt which convinced me to bring Bobby Flay home.

I have seen thousands of starving horses. Bobby Flay I saw from behind. A pathetic butt. That butt belongs to a horse, and I decided right then. He is coming home with me.

The filly Hasti Serve was adopted from us last summer. Her owner Brenda is from Davis. One of my all time favorite horses. Hasti is personality plus.

The other day Brenda and Hasti competed in their first ever dressage show. I had to go watch. Hasti is amazing.

There is more on Hasti below.

It is Monday, a new week, new chores, and the last episode of House. Delicious hot coffee from Dunkin Donuts. Stale apple turnovers made by Raleys. Enjoy your rain is on the way Monday, and be sure to hug your horses. James Brown on the oldies station...

    Joe

    Morning All...

If you are able, go see the photos on Joe's Blog for today....HASTI is GORGEOUS and he's wearing a BLUE RIBBON for his efforts this weekend, too:)

I can't wait to see photos of Bobby Flay!! Though perhaps Joe's version doesn't look quite as good as the Food Network version...but I betcha if he's needing a few pounds...he'll find them at Joe's:)

Another Monday...Lord, they just keep coming..Well, "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." Rain and all:/ LOL!

I hope everyone woke refreshed and ready to 'hup-two' this morning (I am borrowing that expression from our very own Martita...she tickled me with that one) There's work to do...let's see what we can do to try and help some horses!

Hiya, FsOB! The grey day that Alex described on Monday has headed up the coast to CT, sad to say. The rains haven't started yet, but I suspect that they will commence before I arrive in RI. If you haven't had a chance to read Alex's blue-linked article about the Preakness yet, I encourage you to do so.

Are any FsOB going to the Belmont? If so, I would love to make plans to meet you somewhere in the Grandstand at a specific time. Our tickets arrived on Saturday. Brent, my step-son, and I shall be there. (Martita, is there any chance that you'll be at Aqueduct that day?) I've never attended either the Preakness or the Belmont Stakes, so this will be exciting for me.

May your Tuesday be a safe & productive one! Peace, Robyn

    #### Welcome back, Debbie LA!
To Lynne B: Loved the name of "Martita Sangrita"!
To Carleen: No need to be embarrassed at becoming "triste" when petting Jack Pot. Being bereaved for a beloved animal is never easy, especially in the early days.
To Sandra: How is our Mr. Buddy healing from his surgery/neutering? ####

Florida Horse Protection Bill Signed by Governor On Friday

    EWA Press Release

The following press release was just issued.

    May 17, 2010

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2010 Not a Good Year for Horse Slaughter Proponents

CHICAGO, (EWA) - Equine Welfare Alliance and Animal Law Coalition applaud the grass roots efforts in 2010 that have resulted in a series of political defeats for those who want to bring horse slaughter back to the United States.

Of course, commercial horse slaughter for human consumption remains illegal in the U.S. and no state law can change that. Nonetheless, proponents of the cruel practice have tried to use state legislatures to try to convince Americans to bring horse slaughter back to the U.S.

In Missouri, for example, a bill, H.B. 1747, introduced by state Rep. James Viebrock, purported to allow the state to register and license and even provide inspections for horse slaughter facilities. There was even talk of building a horse slaughter plant in a small town in the state.

The bill raised a howl of opposition from horse advocates across the state and country, leading some of its sponsors to become irate to the point of returning opponents' emails unread or forwarding them en masse to one opponent. Some legislators even left harassing, intimidating messages on an opponent's voice mail.

Although state Sen. Dan Clemons announced publicly that Viebrock's bill would progress no further, its provisions were quietly buried in another, unrelated bill, SB 795. A firestorm of public anger erupted when this underhanded tactic was discovered, and the provisions were removed.

AMEWA's John Holland and former Kaufman, Texas Mayor Paula Bacon testified against HB 4812 in Tennessee, a pro-horse slaughter bill. Mayor Bacon described the economic and environmental devastation a horse slaughter facility caused to her town. Holland told legislators about the declining demand for horsemeat and stepped up enforcement of EU regulations and new restrictions that will likely mean fewer and fewer American horses will be eligible for slaughter. Add to that the dangers of American horsemeat from the toxic drugs given to horses here as established in a recent study published in the peer reviewed journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology, Association of phenylbutazone usage with horses bought for slaughter: A public health risk, and, said Holland, "it would make no sense and, in fact, would be irresponsible for legislators to promote horse slaughter with this bill". The bill was then sent for "summer study", essentially withdrawing it for the session.

Also this year, an investigation revealing the cruelty of horse slaughter horrified European consumers and caused the second largest grocer in Belgium and Holland to remove American horse meat from its shelves and a major distributor to assure customers it will only sell European horse meat.

The Carry the Kettle first nation tribe in Canada declined an offer of economic assistance to reopen the Natural Valley Farms slaughter plant in Saskatchewan. The plant had been closed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency after it was discovered dumping blood into the local river and leaving waste in shallow pits.

In Illinois, a bill aimed at repealing the state's 2007 ban on slaughter was withdrawn by its sponsor when it failed to muster support.

Florida's legislature unanimously passed legislation toughening laws against those who butcher horses, or sell or purchase horse meat. The legislation was signed into law Friday by Governor Crist.

The people of Hardin, Montana said no to a proposed horse slaughter plant in their city and even amended city ordinances to prohibit the slaughter of more than ten animals in a seven day period.

Even Jim Schwartz, director of the Wyoming Livestock Board was puzzled by a law sponsored by state Rep. Sue Wallis, that made "send to slaughter" an option for horses in the custody of the Board. "Send to slaughter is not an option in my opinion," said Schwartz. We agree.

Debbie LA:) It's so GOOD to see you back home, Girl! All these 'blue links' to go 'esplore' and hopefully, you'll post here, some 'highlights' of your trip, too!

I see this morning, that our Joe won't be posting today..his time is all taken up for this morning...he's out there into the world helping some horses, no doubt and will be back tomorrow!

We did get rain here yesterday, off/on rain and the temperature was NOT 'springlike' I see some blue sky this early morning and hopefully the clouds will go away and let the sun shine! Highly unusual that we have rain and such cool temps by mid-may it should be in the 90's by now.

Robyn: Buddy hasn't been neutered yet..that will be next month, I think your confusion came because of his 'cousin', Nadja who was healing from her surgery. When I last spoke with Sandra, Buddy had experienced a *MARLEY* moment or twelve and found an area of sheetrock in her garage he thought might be interesting to 're-sculpture'! LOL! She said she thought he had decided the opening to the doggy door should be a bit larger...she took it all in stride, got it cleaned up while he off on a 'play-date' with his 'cousin' that day:) OMG! A *MARLEY* moment!!

I hope everyone has a good day today:)

    ## Carleen , I think of you and wish I could help your pain. Hugs (( ))
The same with Sandra , Harriette, Jane , and so many others of us who have lost loved ones. My prayers and thoughts are always with all of you.

    # Sandra , I hope Buddy's antics aren't too nerve-wracking , perhaps they are lively enough to keep you interested in him. Good luck , my fren.

It's another gray day in NC - wish I could be unfailingly cheerful like Lynne about the weather , but I can't . However , I usually like rain --- and we need it -- so I'll try not to whine too much - it's just that it is still so cool , and I have a beach trip with unchangeable reservations during the first week of June - when it is usually in the 90's on the SC coast. Wish for warm SC weather for me please ! I wish it would stay cool in NC where I live if I could have warm beach weather in SC.

    ## Margie , how are the doggies. I hope you've heard something good from Teddy's situation. And I'm always wishing my fren Trip well , and Suki too. Bless them all.

I miss Joe today , guess you do too . He's so full of life and love for horses . And speaking of horses - today is my email day so I better get cracking - hope you're emailing/ and /or / calling or faxing , or something for horses, yes I know you are- you're great. Lub to all, bye now

Paragallo gets 2 years in jail and a $33,000 fine.

It doesn't seem long , but if he serves the full time , think of sitting on your butt in a cell for two years and wishing you had fed your horses.
Perhaps he will learn that food is important to horses .
What about his other stable/ and or barn people?
Were they involved -- couldn't they see the horses starving and losing weight ? Maybe this has all been hashed out in the court and I'm just unaware.
I haven't read a lot of it -- I didn't want to know it ! ! But I know what this man did is vicious and terrible. I wish he had got more time in to think about it .

Some people on the db were just talking about Calvin Borel , saying they were as tall and weighed as much as he did... and he is big for a jockey .....
I said I weighed as much as Rachel does, lol , that's sort of a conversation stopper !

    Another sad report from BloodHorse:

    Champion Snow Chief Dies

Snow Chief, the 1986 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner and champion 3-year-old male, died Preakness Day of an apparent heart attack. The 27-year-old son of Reflected Glory out of the Snow Sporting mare Miss Snowflake stood at Eagle Oak Ranch near Paso Robles, Calif.

California-bred Snow Chief was a grade I winner all three years he raced and a California Horse of the Year and divisional champion all three years for owners Carl Grinstead and Ben Rochelle and trainer Mel Stute.

At 2, Snow Chief won the Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) and Norfolk Stakes (gr. I). In addition to winning the Preakness at 3, he captured the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) and Florida Derby (gr. I), and at 4, he took the Charles H. Strub Stakes (gr. I). He won six other stakes, three of which were graded, for a career total of a dozen added-money scores.

Snow Chief’s Preakness triumph came following a disappointing 11th-place finish as the 2-1 favorite in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), won by another California-based horse, Ferdinand.

Stute recalled that the day after the Derby, he had a Sunday flight back to California. First he wanted to check on Snow Chief’s legs back at the barn at Churchill Downs before he left. He arrived very early with a client, Dr. David Brown. The groom wasn’t awake yet so he handed the shank to Brown and began taking Snow Chief’s bandages off. The horse kept trying to bite Dr. Brown, and “out of the darkness” came trainer Charlie Whittingham, who trained Ferdinand.

“Gimme that,” Whittingham said as he held the horse. Stute continued to talk to Whittingham about how badly Snow Chief had run.

“Throw that race out,” Whittingham told him. “I ran a filly in the Oaks (Hidden Light) the other day, and she ran seventh. It was probably the racetrack. If you want to go in the Preakness, you go.”

In the Preakness, Snow Chief found the Pimlico track to his liking under regular jockey Alex Solis and beat Ferdinand by four lengths.

“I’m at the window cashing my tickets and here comes Charlie,” Stute said. “Charlie said, ‘Damn it, it’s my fault. I could have had a Triple Crown winner but talked you into running.’ ”

Snow Chief won the Jersey Derby (gr. II) shortly after the Preakness, but didn’t run in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) because his connections felt that the 1 1/2 miles of the longest Triple Crown race might too long for him. (Ferdinand did and finished third.) Snow Chief raced twice more that year without winning but had accomplished enough beforehand to be voted an Eclipse Award.

Snow Chief and Ferdinard also tested each other several times at 4 in 1987. Snow Chief beat him in the Strub, and in their next encounter, Ferdinand ran second and Snow Chief fifth in the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I), won by Broad Brush.

Snow Chief raced just three more times after the Big ’Cap, winning the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. I) in track-record time, prior to being retired. He exited with 13 wins from 24 races and earnings of $3,383,210.

“Snow Chief was the most durable horse I have ever trained,” Stute said. “He could run in the mud, he could run on the dirt--he was something special.”

In 1988, Snow Chief entered stud at Mira Loma Thoroughbred Farm in California. He stood at other farms before landing at Eagle Oak.. He sired 21 stakes horses, including grade II winner College Town and eight other added-money winners.

    ................................................

RIP dark, handsome champ. You did good. Now you and your old racing fren FERDINAND can run together again. You will like the royal herd in Thisgoodplace.

    Loving BARBARO.

Hello ! I haven't been able to post all day , so I guess 7:30pm is not too late - at least I got here.

Did Alex get safely to Britain ? His tweet with a delayed flight is 22 hrs old. Hope he is there and having a great time , seeing family and friends perhaps. Maybe England's weather will smile on the returning son.

I hope you've had a great day - did you help a horse ? I did email the Prez , but I am guilty of not making any headway today in anything else. I'll send emails later tonight perhaps ;)

See you later , Barbaro heads , and I lub you all, bye now ,

    PS ,

I want to congratulate Lookin at Lucky again for winning the Preakness. He sure is worthy to take over Rachel's title this year. If you watch the race again , look how strongly he comes out to win near the end. The boy has speed and fortitude to do that and he is the real deal ! He ran a great race.

Joan, just read your thoughts about a registry for animal abusers. Kind of remembered hearing something about that issue so Googled it.
Four states - Louisiana, Tennessee, New York and California - have worked on this concept. You know how hard any legislation is to get passed, so it's still working its way through the systems in varying forms. But, at least they are aware and attempting to do something along these lines. California seems to have gotten farthest (article said they were responsible for establishing the sex offender registries).

Slowly, there seems to be increasing awareness of link between animal and human abuse. Personally, (sorry to offend anyone), animal abuse in itself is heinous, inexcusable and evil enough for a firing squad. Bad childhoods, bad hair days, bad relationships, bad moods do not constitute reasons - though often provided as 'excuses' - for bad people to abuse defenseless animals or children. Registration, in addition to jail time, would be a good start.

It seems politicians and more of us common folk are looking at keeping track of animal abusers as a good idea. Found a link to a site, petabuse.com, started according to the article, in order to track abuse incidences by a lady whose cat was stolen and killed If there's one, there must be others online doing the same thing.

    ## Hi Margie ,
glad the doggies are doing good !

    Hello everyone ,
I've been on the db reading about the owners of Mine That Bird taking him from Chip Woolley and sending him to Wayne Lucas - - it's not a popular decision on the db ! People are very fond of Woolley and appreciated how he drove MTB himself , and how he treated MTB.

The overwhelming opinion of Lucas is that he is a hard taskmaster.

I really don't know enough about it to say , but I will say how much I respected Woolley and his actions. I wish the very best for MTB - brave little guy that he is. What a great horse and I hope he is treated well.

It's another coolish morning here , low 70s now , and I see robins and redbirds in the yard, jostling for position and food - the way of life.
They are all quite rotund so there is no shortage of food there , lol . I'm surprised a couple of them can actually get off the ground to fly. I should talk.

Make it a good day - whatever you're doing , hope it's going well. See you later, go do something for horses- email Prez or somebody, thanks , bye now,

Lou Ann, Heelers are Australian Cattle Dogs. They are amazing. When my Grandfather has spring roundups the neighboring ranchers came to help and many had the Heelers. They nip at the heels and legs of the cows to get then into the branding chute. I was always afraid one would get kicked but they are so fast it hardly ever happens.

Bobbie B...and Lynne, Carleen, Otherlyn, others...Please help...crosspost, donate, facebook....

This is one of our "8" It's A Barbaro Christmas...and they need our help...badly..

please read...and do what you all can..please..

I am sending some e-mails to individuals, hoping they might have ideas. HDLM is having a very difficult year. 1020 so far is much worse than 2009, and that was very difficult. We are struggling to feed, let alone pay utilities, the mortgage (sanctuary owns this property), the few part-time helpers we have to do some of the feeding. I have postponed or canceled altogether my double knee replacement surgeries. Simply cannot do it now. I'm troubled by the fact that we may loose some credibility by those who aren't here to witness the situation. In 2008 and 2009, we made it because we placed over 50 residents, and individuals did more. In 2010, some normally big donors ($5-15,000) have not been heard from yet. I've written polite letters, with no response. We've been doing this since 1990, and officially as a 501(c)(3) since 1996. In hindsight, we took too many in 2007 when money was flowing in because of one Foundation. Last year,. as some of you know, we thought we might have to close, because I would not go out and say "this one stays, this one goes" I could not. Fortunately, many said they were ready, and we placed, for the first time ever, residents I thought we here for life. Tomorrow I am taking 10 young jacks to a place near Williams, AZ to a wonderful place. There are still 4 horses, and about 45 burros, looking for good new homes. The burros will go in small groups, if and when there are places.

It costs us $340 per day to just feed, and when you add the other costs, i.e. insurance, truck repairs, fuel, utilities, mortgage, farrier; vet, etc. it is close to $25,000 per month to operate if we do all we need to do. We are a couple of months behind on farrier work. My SS check, which I will get next Wednesday, is already gone to keep the phone and Internet going, and probably pay the mortgage unless we get more in for that.

If this is more than you wanted to know, I apologize, If any of you have any ideas, please share them. Our book is in the hands of a publisher. That is a good thing, and I have no idea when we will hear. I do not cry wolf, and never will. This is serious. It would be helpful to have e-mail address for more of our mailing list, and we ask and ask, and don't get them. I know that we are not alone, and I know that times are tough, and I also know that if we can get our existence in front of enough people. we can make it.

If anyone has ideas or suggestions, please share them now. We have a trail ride scheduled this weekend if weather permits. We have a dinner June 5. Sign-up is light. We have a gymkhana in September. IF anyone wants to see our Federal 990, please let me know.

    Thanks for listening, and caring!

Right, Sandra. Heelers are herding dogs. They need to be kept busy. They need to have jobs. If they get bored, serious behavior issues develop. They are not lay-on-the-sofa couch potato dogs. The way this older couple handled Ruby's issues was to get another heeler puppy for her to act out with. Seamus went through hell with Ruby. They had to surrender her to save Seamus. Ruby is at risk. We're going to try to help her.

Some people don't seem to investigate breed characteristics before bringing a dog into their homes. We have a 75 year old man that comes in with his 10 month old Border Collie. This man is in poor health, and I just know that Lizzie is going to drag him to the ground one day and his hip will be broken.

A nice dog for the aging human is a Coton de Tulear. If they MUST have a pedigreed dog. Otherwise, I recommend a mixed breed, OLDER, shelter dog.

While we're waiting for the addresses , all I can think of is publicity.
Could someone from the rescue go on local radio/ and /or tv ... or get a reporter out there on site, to see the animals and tell the people the plight ?
Usually local radio stations are receptive to stories like this -- and will talk to you, perhaps on a phone in show ,

Of course , didn't someone say earlier this is in a desert area -- and perhaps there is not enough population locally to help ?
Is there a newspaper who might be interested in seeing the place and burros, etc. ?
One answer is smaller donations from more businesses. Businesses are impacted badly by the recession and can't give like they did, but perhaps they can give some ?

Send an email to Madeleine Pickens , tell her the facts , and ask her if she knows any national or federal assistance help available to rescues.

email Cass Sunstein at the White House or write a snail mail and ask him about federal assistance to a 501 C3 ,
Somebody might know something to apply for ?
That's all I can think of right now. The FOBs can donate like we do , but you saw it takes $340 a day just to feed. Wow , that must be a lot of mouths to be responsible for. I pray God will bless them all.

    ## Joan ,
What about contacting all church groups within 20 miles or so and having a day or two on the weekend maybe - with a ride and polaroid picture for $5 or so.
I know there might be insurance issues , and it would have to be well supervised - perhaps by volunteers -- but still it might be successful - as a stop - gap maybe , but would help.
Churchs have activity buses normally - they do their own transportation --

I say churches because schools are about to recess for the year - and churches that have vacation bible schools or daycare are always looking for worthwhile things to do for the kids.
I think activity directors at churches would love it . They could make sure every child had a $5 for his ride and picture.
I don't know how populated their area is , but they could do potentially hundreds of kids.
If the insurance is okay ...

Or perhaps a county government group could send a big group of children there - with a grant -
I would explore it all if I were there. Knock on doors and try to sell it to them -- I hope they have time to try some things - I know running a rescue is never ending work , dawn til dusk.
    Just saying ...

Posted by: Bobbie B. at May 21, 2010 5:41 PM

Joan , also , maybe they could work some kind of agreement with a YMCA / YWCA -- they keep many , many children over the summer - as a place to visit, maybe a specified donation deal with the office before they come. They have their own transportation too I think -

Also , are there any medical / homes etc. for those who are special needs in the area ? They could be visited and perhaps work a visiting plan . So good for the people able to go - horses help them so --
and a payment plan could be agreed.
I don't know if any of this is legal for a
501 C3 or not , but I hope so. I know they are allowed to ask for donations - so it would all have to be on that basis.
If these ideas are no good or you think are
unworkable , throw them away. But perhaps it might help ...

    Morning, Family....

Saturday Morning! Where'd the week go?!

I noticed, as most of you may have, that Google put up the Pac Man game to celebrate Pac Man's 30th Birthday...and on my local news last night, I discovered that for 48 hours, if you click the 'insert coin' icon..we can PLAY PAC MAN!! Wheeeee:)

I am not so good at it...but it was fun last night and the sound is fun, too!!

Today is Volunteer Work Day up at Safe Haven and it's also *EXCESSORIZED* #5 Birthday! A cake is being presented to her later on...well, a good sized piece of cake at least...and photos are promised as they all watch her dive into said pc of cake!! :) Her new name is *SESSIE*:) and she is soooooooo beautiful, Family! It just tickles me PINK to know she is being fed and cared for the way ALL horses should be...and not just that, but she is LOVED like all horses should be...and not only that....but she's HAVING A PARTY TODAY:)

All horses setting hooves to tracks today, God's White Light all around you....zoom home over the finish..gallop out back to your stalls safe/sound you BEAUTIES ALL:)

I hope everyone has a great day today! We've got blue skies..and SRSLY cold (for this time of year) temps this morning..and the 'high' for today is to be a 'whopping' 61 degrees:/ Holy Cow! Spring is on hiatus!

Joe got some Yummy cookies made by Lynne Brown!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at May 22, 2010 4:14 PM

So you think if I wrote a long piece about how I've taken horses into my back yard and caring for them and rehoming them ,... that Lynne Brown would send me homemade cookies ?
NAH - I better not tell such fibs ... about such a good thing as horse rescue ! ..my little backyard is not big enough for a pony , let alone horses -- ..how I wish !

But those cookies are almost tempting enough to make a girl exaggerate a good deal , lol. I have a couple of wild rabbits and a few squirrels - does that count ? Guess not !

Guess I'll make my own cookies -- or better yet, buy them at the bakery - my fave store, yeah .

Hope you're having a sunny Saturday. Don't you wish you could hold Saturday in your arms and give 'him', her ? a big squeeze and say how much you love it when he/she comes around ? I love Saturdays !
I hope Alex is enjoying himself at home in Eng.
See you later peeples , bye now,

Bobbie B! LOL....the BEST for me, aside from being able to do something to bring a smile for our *JOE*...was that I asked 'especial' if *PONY BOY* could please have a few...and Joe wrote y'day, saying *PONY BOY* has become 'fussy' in his teen years..but he had eaten THREE of my cookies...and 'HE LUBS DEM':) That REALLY tickled me!!

As I wrote earlier today...it's *EXCESSORIZED* Birthday...and I have made a POEM:)to CELEBRATE with *SESSIE*...and I wanted to share with YOLE, too:)

ON THIS DAY IN TWO-THOUSAND AND FIVE.....

A MARE SAID, "OH! MAN ALIVE! I THINK IT IS TIME FOR MY BABE TO ARRIVE!"

AS SHE LAY ON THE GROUND WITH FOLKS ALL AROUND...

THERE CAME A NEW FILLY TO DELIGHT AND SURPRISE

AND THE FILLY'S NAME WOULD BECOME *EXCESSORIZED*

THIS FILLY HAD ROYALTY LINES IN HER BLOOD...NOT WITH SUCH THINGS AS A SPUR OR A LARIAT...

BUT A HORSE BY THE NAME OF *SECRETARIAT*

SHE GREW AND SHE GREW AND A GOOD GIRL SHE BECAME

BUT IN TIME ALL WHO KNEW HER, SAID RACING WASN'T HER GAME..

SHE WAS CAST ASIDE AND NEARLY FORGOTTEN...

UNTIL NICE PEOPLE CAME AND TOOK HER TO 'COTTON'...

    wood that is:)

WHERE TODAY SHE LIVES THE LIFE ALL HORSES SHOULD..WHERE PEOPLE ALL LOVE AND RESPECT HER AND CARE.

    SHE'S HAVING A PARTY WITH CAKE AND A SONG...THEY'RE HAVING A *DO*..

AND *BIG RED* is smiling for his GRANDDAUGHTER TIMES TWO!

HAPPY, HAPPY DAY, *SESSIE* ..... xoxo Aunty Lynne and ALL the FOBS LOVE YOU!!

Lynne , that is absolutely wonderful ... it's a real poem and not a ditty like most ( I ) write.
Congratulations on a fine work. Plus it celebrates Sessie so beautifully .. Have you sent it to the folks there ? They should put it out to be read , or read it aloud , at her party .... yay for Sessie.

Thanks to all of yole who asked how Buddy is doing?
Buddy wasnt happy here. I used poor judgment as I should have know a 8 month pup wouldnt be happy here. I have a bad knee and cant exercise a pup as he needs to be. He is at my nieces home now and he is so happy. He has a best friend,Nadja, to play with and every night he and Nadja are taken to a large park and they have so much fun together. Crista is starting Buddy and Nadja to school next week. Buddy is in the beginners class and Nadja in the advanced. Nadja is a year old and at night he and Nadja have to sleep touching each other. Nadja was just spayed and Buddy will be neutered soon.
As I said I used poor judgment but since Buddy was found on the highway I wanted him to have a happy home.
I guess Chief and me was about the right speed for each other. I didnt care if Buddy ate the whole garage wall down (which he almost did) as through the years my Labs about ate the house up. He just wasnt happy here.
Thank you all for asking about Buddy and caring about him.

More- It didnt help Buddy as half the time I called him Chief. No wonder the boy wasnt happy here as he probably thought 'who is this Chief??'

Posted by: sandra at May 22, 2010 7:47 PM

Many hugs your way, SANDRA! God and St. Francis still worked through you because they knew you would get BUDDY to a happy safe home!
And I know THE CHIEFSTER is very very proud of his mama for this!

Please hang in there and take good care of you, and I know that every one of us here, this BARBARO NATION, will understand just as I do.

It's still a critical time after such a great loss, you take all the time you need, and besides we all know, of course, that THE CHIEFSTER is still very much with you in spirit and always will be.

    ((Hugs)) SANDRA!!

And always IN LOVING MEMORY of FOB CHIEF!

I have a feeling that CHIEF and Carleen's BUD are on a Heavenly trout fishing outing today with LOUIE . . . you know I get these "feelings".
Of course, there are peanut butter crackers and cheddar cheese cubes galore!
And apples for Barbaro and all his equine pals, too!
Dad never left for his outings without treats for all his four-legged pals! :)

    Much love,
    Lou Ann

Hi Sandra. I second what Lou Ann had to say. I have a feeling Chief and his hevvinly friends breathed sighs of relief when you understood where they intended Buddy to go. You were necessary in their grand plan! Take care of yourself - I firmly believe there is one making its way to you, one who needs you - both you and Chief will know the right one - and it will be.
    I do Believe!!

Sandra, I also agree with Lou Ann and Linda. Your involvement was meant to be! You are a kind soul and YOUR dog will come to you when it's time.

    Morning Everyone:)

Sunday Morning...COLD here in the westwing! People walking their dogs, dressed for JANUARY and not 'almost' June! Reeeeedickulous!! :/ Snow falling on all the passes...I think more rain forecast for us and certainly NOT condusive weather for summertime activities...I shudder to think of the outdoor weddings which may have been planned...hope they've got a Plan B which includes indoors and HEAT!

I talked to our Sandra a couple of times yesterday..she's truly 'dine&fandy' with how this has all turned out for she and *BUDDY*...and best of all, *BUDDY* is happy as a clam, too! He and Nadja sleep together at night...but they MUST BE TOUCHING..or things just aren't 'right' in their world:) Both dogs will come to visit her and play in her big backyard together from time to time...so she'll still get plenty of good times with Buddy...and in the meantime, she's on the look-out for a more mature, little 'slower moving' older googie:) She and I laughed many times, during both conversations...she wanted me to know she's 100% in favor of the decision...and everyone who wrote here...you're absolutely right! Nadja's daddy needed time to adjust to having two young dogs in the house/yard...and now, Najda's daddy has *BUDDY*...he will be 'in charge' of training him and working with him...and Sandra and I both agree, it's a good thing all the way around:) Najda has a playmate all day long and she's not so 'energetic' when the folks arrive home from working...and Buddy isn't lonely anymore or bored...it's all so very, very good:)

I heard from Linda at Safe Haven y'day:) She asked me to please call the Barn at a certain time, which I did...and while I could be on the phone, listening to all the *FESTIVITIES*, they served *SESSIE* a nice BIG piece of her very own BIRTHDAY CAKE...CARROT CAKE...Well..it seems Miss Sessie didn't like that cake so much!! LOL! Linda said she got frosting on her nose...and tried wiping it off on the sand in the arena!! Holly, Sessie's new mommy, put some cake into her mouth..and she spit it right out!! LOL..MORE! It was just hysterical, listening...I told Linda *CHARLEY* wouldn't spit that cake out!!! Nope!! *CHARLEY* would gobble it right down and ask for MORE...but Sessie would prefer her mush and some grain, with a hay chaser, please!!! :) Gotta love the horses...they're just like kids...they have minds of their very own, and they use them!

Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Sessie:) That was a TON of fun listening to! And if you remember, I'd sent her a Hello Kitty B'Day card...and Linda said she put some of the Hello Kitty stickers on her new leather halter!! :) Linda said she'd get the Blog put together later this week..and I'll get it to her Thread on the DB...Wheeeee:) They did read my poem:) which don't you know, tickled me PINK AS A PEONY!! So...all in all, it was a good day at Safe Haven y'day, for the folks who came to volunteer and for 'our' *SESSIE*, too!!

They also talked alot about the Fans Of Barbaro...and all the help we have given them with not just *SESSIE*, but *DRIFTER* and *CHARLEY* and with the flu shots earlier last winter...and of course, our so precious girl, *DELTA DAWN*....so we got a little PR out of yesterday's festivities, too....and lest I forget, our BBH was mentioned a time or TWELVE as well!

Near as I can calculate...it's nearly 4:30p in England now...from my time zone here in the westwing...so our WEBMASTER might be already in the air...flying OVER THE POND...and he'll be 'home again, home again, clippity-clop' soon...Wheeeeeee!!

I hope everyone has a great Sunday...and wherever you are, I cannot help hope it is WARMER than here...:)

A Sunday hello to the FOBs ,

    ## Lynne , that party must have been hilarious ,
cake on the nose , etc. ! I'm glad they read your poem - Sessie deserves it all .

    ## Sandra , you made a wise decision , and take heart , your dog will come.

    ## Lou Ann , Chief and Bud , and in my mind - no doubt Murphy - are fishing with Louie ?? LOL , I know they are no end of help to him ! ! Can't you just see them , running around and getting into everything and seeing -- if that bait is edible ! ! Louie's laughing more than fishing.

I hope everyone has a blessed Sunday , and I will see you here later, frens... and wishing Alex a safe trip if he's traveling today,
    bye now,

Sandra, I'm so sorry that Buddy was not the right pup at the right time. I remember when Bud first came home to us, he liked to eat plastic garbage cans...eating walls is a whole differnt thing.
I still believe that one day your just going to turn around or be driving down the road and you will find a pup that you can share love with.

Otherlyn and Dee - please take care and know well wishes and good thoughts are with you.

Lou Ann and Bobbie B. - thank you both for your sweet thoughts of our Buddy. I go out at night and wish him a good evening and tell him that I love him so.

Lynne - I hope you are enjoying the sunshine now if the wind would just lay a little lower.

Joan - Thank you for Wayne's address and always caring. Help to Wayne in Monday's mail.

((((hugs to all)))) and take care.

Margie, I also wish more people would adopt a mixed breed puppy or a grown dog.
For years I showed Labs in the show ring and I even had one that qualified to go to Westminister. Well, I didnt have the money for New York city.
I loved them all but it took a little mutt pup found in a ditch to become my soul mate. Our local city shelter put down 22,000 dogs last year. The answer is spaying and neutering. Every May when Texas Tech is out for the summer hundreds of good dogs are just abandoned by the Tech kids. I wouldnt be surprised that Buddy wasnt one of them. H

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing your photos from Cornwall. Is Nare Point adjacent to the Nare Hotel, by any chance?

Are any of our NY/NJ/CT FsOB planning to attend the Belmont Stakes? If so, perhaps we could designate a place & time and then we could meet at Aqueduct. That would be such a treat.

Amazing to see that Ernie Paragallo was actually sentenced to two years in prison. Animal abuse is so seldom dealt with harshly in this country.

My thanks to Otherlyn for informing us about Snow Chief's passing. May he test in peace.

Wishing everyone "ACN" and may we all rise in the morn to seize the new week. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Sandra: You made a most unselfish decision on Buddy's behalf. He has a wonderful new home and a best canine friend with whom to live and frolic.
To Bobbie B: Sorry to see that Calvin Borel has sustained an infected cut to his face. Something tells me that his energetic nature will not react well to having to take it easy.
To Margie: Please let us know how Ruby is doing, OK? Glad to see that the Salukis have found new homes.
To Linda in NW FLA: I was as thrilled as you to see a nation-wide registry proposed for those convicted of animal abuse.

Robyn, thank you for asking about Ruby. She was surrendered because she was attacking Seamus, and the humans stepped in and she went after them. She did not bite anyone. No blood drawn. After working with her this weekend I could see that she wants her human all to herself. She took food from the palm of my hand yesterday morning for the first time. This morning I gave her breakfast and reached in to take the bowl and she let me. (I wear thick leather gloves.) I was able to smother her head with my face with no problem. I got on the floor and wrestled with her. She loved it. I was doing some desk work and she was laying at my feet snoring. I called the assessor at our shelter and told him what was happening. He's going to take Ruby on several trips into town this week. She's fine. She just needs a home with no other animals and a human that will help her maintain boundaries. She really needs a retired human. She gets bored when alone. When I left the kennels tonight, I gave her the biggest stuffed animal we had. In an instant, she laid down with her head on it. She is very sweet and craves love and attention. Her former humans are both lawyers, out of the house all of the time. She was only guilty of creating her own entertainment. Ruby is in need of her new human. She is spayed, 30 months old. She listens to commands, and would not get up on the furniture in the office. She will not wee or poo in her private outdoor run. She only goes in the big yard. She's a good girl. She was just in the wrong situation for her personality.

Thank you for asking of her. One at a time. That's all we can do. We get thoroughly exhausted at times.

Hiya, FsOB! A bright new Monday has dawned here on the banks of what is a flat and shimmering Thames. My eye is drawn to the swimming pool blue-coloured bobbers marking the placement of two lobster traps. (Marg, aren't these called "bobbers"? One sees them off the coast of Maine all the time.) Yesterday I watched the lobsterman retrieve his traps and then replace them. It's always a treat for this native Kentuckian to witness this coastal New England ritual. Wishing all of you a safe & productive Monday! Peace, Robyn

    #### To Margie: I hope that Ruby finds a great new home. Yes, that breed needs a lot of exercise, similar to Huskies, or they can get into trouble.
To Jane in CT: Hoping that you had a great weekend, I've missed seeing you here. ####

##Here is a report from BloodHorse. There is no mention of the horse...no name, no report as to how she fared. I do hope she is OK, but, it is not unusual in cases such as this, for there to be no mention of the outcome when it is bad for the horse. A name...some sort of tribute or RIP would serve to at least honor the one who gave all.

    Here is the report:
    ................................................

Top jockey Julien Leparoux will be sidelined at least five more weeks with a spine injury suffered in a spill during a race May 14 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

Leparoux is recovering from a compression fracture in his vertebrae after the horse he was riding in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II), Diva Delite, tumbled on the backstretch after clipping heels. Leparoux was unseated, along with Kent Desormeaux, who was aboard Seeking the Title that also fell.

Desormeaux was unhurt, but Leparoux had chest pains, bruises and a broken tooth. However, he returned to ride the next day in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), finishing 11th aboard Pleasant Prince. He won two races prior to the Preakness.

The injury was discovered May 18 following an MRI exam in Louisville, Ky. Leparoux's agent, Steve Bass, said May 22 that the rider will see a doctor next week and have another MRI exam four weeks later.

Leparoux was last year's Eclipse Award winner as the nation's top jockey, and currently ranks 10th among riders in earning at more than $4 million. He was second in the current Churchill Downs rider standings behind Calvin Borel.

"He has a compression fracture of the T-8 in the middle of his back," Bass said in a statement. "He is resting and he is bored."
    ..................................................

Having been a fan of this talented rider, I'm sure we FOB will be wishing Julien a timely and complete recovery.

    Your FOB Fren, O
