    Barbaro Updates: 996

    updates are now here.

Update 6004: A day off from Fair Hill.

Well Calvin Borel did it again and won his third Kentucky Derby in four years, this time aboard Super Saver for trainer Todd Pletcher. It was Todd Pletcher's first win. Calvin had Super Saver placed somewhat forwardly, and along the rail pretty much the entire trip. There was crazy speed early in the race which stretched the field well and made Calvin's inside trip more makable. Around the far turn the trick was not to get caught by the front runners who were literally pulling up at that point. Calvin got first run down the lane and held off a fast closing Ice Box who had sat far behind in the early going. Paddy O' Prado and Make Music for Me finished third and fourth.

The first half mile was run in a torrid 46.16. The final time of 2:04.45 and change was slow and included a near 27 second last quarter. The track conditions were awful thanks to the weather.

    Here are some media coverage:

Update 6003: It's Kentucky Derby day! And here are my picks: Our 2010 Derby Picks Are Burning. Obivously the weather in Kentucky is having an impact on Derby day.

I rode six this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. And what a gorgeous morning it was here at Fair Hill. Four of mine also worked, so there was plenty of activity out there for me today. All went nicely.

While the Derby is the marquee race today, it's not the only big race: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies.

Update 6002: Six ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. It was a little warmer start to the day too that made it a very pleasant morning's work. All mine went nicely, including the two babies I rode that went on the Tapeta track for the first time. One did hesitate a little going through the tunnel (under the dirt track) for the first time but then she was great.

Yesterday we previewed the Kentucky Derby on our 30 minute ABR radio show. It was a fun show, and hopefully you will enjoy not just the humor but also some of the insights (and background noise): Alex Brown Racing on the radio.

Of course the highlight of today will be Rachel Alexandra's race at Churchill Downs. 2009 Horse of the Year looks to turn the tables on Zardana who defeated her in a huge upset earlier this year. They appear in the 6th race, with a post time of 1:26 pm and (hopefully) on HRTV.

Blind Luck headlines the feature race at Churchill Downs later this afternoon, the Kentucky Oaks: Blind Luck Draws Post 5 for KY Oaks.

    And please keep calling.

Update 6001: Another chilly start to the day at Fair Hill, but bright sunshine. I had five to ride for Michael Pino and all five went nicely. This included two sets of babies that both went to the gate for some schooling for the first time. It's always an interesting experience when you take a horse to the starting gate for the first time, but they were very good.

The field and morning line odds are now set for Saturday's Kentucky Derby: Lookin at Lucky Draws Inside Post. It will be a little while before I can really figure this field out. We will be hosting our ABR radio show at 2 pm today. We will of course focus a lot of our time on trying to handicap the Derby: Alex Brown Racing on the radio. We will be joined today by Lisa Grimm.

Here is my latest entry for The Rail: A Day in the Life of an Exercise Rider.

    And please keep calling.

    Update 6000: Wow, 6000 updates!

Seven ridden this morning for Michael Pino. It was a chilly start to the day. I had a mixed bag of activity out there. A couple of joggers, four gallopers, two of which were babies, and one worker who went 5/8ths. All went nicely, even the babies were pretty good as it was only there second day here. Here is my first horse, cooling out after her gallop.

This is my latest entry for The Rail: Countdown Begins for Derby Horses.

    And please keep calling.

Update 5999: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

After the frenzied game of musical chairs over the weekend, we now have a reasonably good sense of who is actually going in the Derby - and it's certainly not Eskendereya or Rule (who, quite sensibly, now seems pointed for the Preakness). While it's not clear whether the front wraps he wore in his Wood victory were a hint that something was slightly amiss, he will be missed – but in some ways, his defection makes the potential race more interesting – and certainly more wide-open. Lookin At Lucky is the obvious successor to take on the favorite mantle, but here are a few more Derby starters on whom I'll be keeping a particularly close eye:

    Noble's Promise
I liked his finish in the Rebel, and he has had more than his share of poor luck this season; he could be due for a big race.

    Sidney's Candy
While I wish he had a good dirt prep on his resume, he seems more likely to make the transition more easily than many. But it's nice to see Joe Talamo have a horse with a real shot, after the I Want Revenge situation last year.

    Awesome Act
Another victim of bad luck in the past, we know he likes the mud - and he's worth watching.

    Devil May Care
Now we know she's definitely in the Derby - and she deserves her spot (which is more than I can say for some of the colts we'll likely be seeing - whether you agree with Beyer's entire column or not, I think he's right on with the notion that the earnings have become some sort of automatic Derby ticket, deserved or otherwise). And hey, she has namesakes in both a Jamie Cullum CD and a James Bond novel (albeit one by Sebastian Faulks). John Velazquez gets the mount.

Of course, we already have the field for the Oaks, and Blind Luck is the favorite. We'll go more in-depth with the Oaks tomorrow (as well as commenting on the Derby draw), but Amen Hallelujah and Crisp are my other two (rather chalky) picks.
And the Oaks undercard is going to have one very special guest: Rachel Alexandra is running in the La Troienne. She's back to her normal (for which read 'rather spectacular') work pattern, so hopefully we'll see her turn the tables on Zardana - although I'm equally fine giving her another race to get back into her true form.

In the meantime, check out Hello Race Fans and The Rail for more, as there is plenty of quality racing-related writing on tap this week - and remember to tune in to Alex Brown's radio show on Thursday, where I'll be handing out some dubious Derby and Oaks wagering advice.

I leave you (until tomorrow!) with this thought: can Pletcher get another last-place finisher with Mission Impazible?

Update 5998: Seven ridden this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. It has been damp here lately so most training occurred on the Tapeta track. All went nicely. Here is one of my fillies, a little over 30 minutes after she had finished training.

Here is my first contribution to The Rail. I interviewed Daily Racing Form's Mike Welsch: A Closer Look at the Derby Crop.

Here is this week's ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Alexa King, Bill Nack, Eskendereya, The Rail, pre-Derby workouts, Rachel Alexandra, Careless Jewel, Zardana, ABR radio, Steve Willard, Lisa Grimm.

    And please keep calling.

Update 5997: A damp and dreary morning this morning at Fair Hill. I shedrowed five for Michael Pino for a very straightforward start to the day.

The Rail is back for another Triple Crown season. I will again be contributing.

Rachel Alexandra worked this morning ahead of her much anticipated start later this week at Churchill Downs.

    And please keep calling.

Tomorrow, April 27, is our very own *SHERRY VAN WAGONER'S* Birthday...She's going to be celebrating her first Birthday in Heaven!!

To mark the day, Daryl, Warpaint, Dakota and Gunner will go for a walk at the Ranch in Minnesota and find a perfect spot to stop and Celebrate Sherry on her Special Day.

Daryl will bring with him three balloons, Lael colored balloons, a pale pink rose and a small bit of Sherry's ashes which her sister, Lois, gave to him. Daryl wants Sherry to be there with her three Boyz and the balloons will be released skyward to the Heavens.

I believe our Sherry VW will be watching and smiling...she'll be there with little Melody and her beloved *CHICO* and Daryl's dad, Ed, who shares the same birthdate with Sherry.

Sherry's candle group is burning brightly thanks to our Sister in Barbaro, Barb AZ, Group Search: Sherr. Please stop in and light a candle and give a 'shout-out' for our Sherry.

Happy Birthday, Sherry VW...We love you!

Just a reminder if anyone would like to donate to the Laminitis Fund for Barbaro's birthday or to the donor horses via Kennett Florist (610-444-6040).

Hiya, FsOB! My thanks to Deborah Anderson for reposting the telephone # for Kennett Florist. I'll call from my cell phone tomorrow for the donor horses. In addition, a $29.00 check will finally go in the mail tomorrow for UPENN's Laminitis Research Fund.

Wow, we are having a very cool and rainy night here tonight. Thank goodness I made a huge pot of minestrone last PM for this work week. Alex, I wish that I could telepathically send you a warm bowl of soup, after seeing that you had a rainy, dismal day.

Can you believe that Barbaro would have turned seven years old this Thursday? I certainly hope to visit his statue at Churchill Downs some day. Wishing all "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Linda in NW FLA: I hope that the Panhandle wasn't affected by the bad weather last weekend. Thank you for your moving description of Barbaro's statue as it was unveiled.
To Janice in PA: Missing you here!
To Angel Dee: Thanks as always for the rainbows.
To Debbie LA: I am so grateful that you, your family, and community are safe. Dare this Upper Southern native/New England transplant of a cracked belle inquire as to what "fried mud bug fritters" are? ####

Hiya, FsOB! Well, it's a grey & rainy Tuesday morning which has dawned here on the banks of the Thames. May the rains come early this week so that Kentucky Derby Day is a golden, clear one! Here's to the memory of Sherry Van W.: April 27th was the day of her birth. Wishing everyone a safe & productive Tuesday. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Joan: I hope that Pierre's staple removal procedure went well yesterday. I don't recall seeing a note from you last PM, please know that I am thinking of your little fellow.
To Debbie LA: I became grossly allergic to shrimp in my 20s and lobster in my 40s. The revenge of the shellfish, I suppose. I do love artichoke fritters, a specialty of the Bristol Bar & Grille in Louisville, KY. They are served with a great remoulade sauce.
To Bobbie B: I love espionage genre, too. Have you ever read any of Len Deighton's works. His double trilogies set in Berlin (Hook, Line, & Sinker and Game, Set, Match) are really impressive. Furth's books are fabulous as well, I am blocking his first name. Michael Pearce is superb as well. ####

Thank you so much for asking...

##Robyn, my location fared well during last weekends storms. I'm as far north and west as you can go and still be in the state of Florida - within spittin' distance of the Alabama state line almost. Amazingly, we didn't lose power - but the phones did go out till yesterday! We got some winds (enough to take in my glass wind chimes to keep from breaking) and some heavy downpours of rain on Saturday. The dogs all stayed snuggy in their beds and I devoted the day to cleaning and paperwork! Sunday was byootiful for doing yardwork. Thank you for asking! I absolutely hate the prospect of a tornado and, unfortunately, hurricanes pack a double whammy because they usually bring tornadoes - or what the experts often call downbursts - with them; the aftermath of destruction is the same either way. There were countless stands of young pine trees snapped like toothpicks during Hurricane Ivan. So sad to see.

    Wild Mares Mother's Day Campaign

Please send a Mother’s Day card to the First Lady.

Write an inscription inside your Mother’s Day card, or enclose a letter with it.

An inscription might be, “In honor of the Mustang Mother Mares who have lost their foals, please ask the President to call a halt to all wild horse roundups and an investigation into the BLM.”

Sign your name, and include your city and state. Youngsters, please include your age.

If you opt to include a letter, this is an opportunity to make it personal, from you. Tell our First Lady how you really feel about what is happening to our wild horses and burros. Sit down with a blank piece of paper and pour out your heart. That will mean more to Mrs. Obama than any number of facts or figures. If you do this, she may even show it to Mr. Obama!

Happy birthday in hevvin , Sherry - you know Daryl is taking care of your boys .

    # Joan , I'm glad at least the girl took responsibility and cared enough to apologize for hurting Pierre. Now if only the vet would take responsibility for his aide and not charge you !

    # Lynne , it seems that I've traveled so much , Europe extensively - having lived there twice - but would you believe I've never been to CA ? I am going to make it a mission to visit there sometime in the next few years , there is so much I want to see there. I've heard so many good things about CA from frens who have lived there- they ... the Southern ones at least , rave about
' no bugs ! ' being able to go out and sit out without a thick covering of mosquito spray ! It must be wonderful ! It was in Europe too, in that way at least . California or bust .

    # Robyn , I've read some of Len Deighton, and many others from Robert Ludlum to modern ideologists like David Baldacci , Vince Flynn , and others. Tom Clancy was a favorite for years in a more technical vein -- the military - techno- spy thrillers. I don't claim any literary legitimacy , just read it all for enjoyment these days. At my stage of life now , I prefer to read one of the ' Cat Who ' series rather
    than Shakespeare !

It's almost lunch time here in the East , so I'll say an early ' good afternoon ' to all you FOBs , and wish you all nice days . See you later,
    Bye now,

Bobbie B...I dunno where your friends said they could sit without swarms of mosquitos....not here in the foothills, for sure! We have LOTS of them right now...and they'll be around until it gets SRSLY hot..and I think as long as they have a breeding ground, they will be around all summer long! Last night on the news they spoke of mosquitos and West Nile and pointed out to us the importance of making sure there's no standing water in any containers in our yards..they said they only need a bottle cap to breed in???!!! OY!

If you get to California...you MUST visit Yosemite National Park!! And San Francisco and the Napa Valley and if possible, do some 'esplorin' of Highway 49!! Lots of rich gold rush history and beautiful little towns along Hwy 49!

Southern CA does have some very beautiful places, too...but I'm a Northern Girl...and prefer it here. The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range is also quite something to behold...On Interstate 80, Donner Pass, Donner Lake, too..there's a big monument there remembering the Donner Party! Truckee, CA is a beautiful small 'artsy/fartsy' mountain community not far from Donner...coldest in the state temps overnight can be found there during the summer months..and wintertime, too:) Lassen National Park...Mt. Lassen! Big volcanic area up there...bubbling mud pots and springs there..very interesting place and beautiful, too! Geeze...thinking of all the places a person could vist, maybe Arnold would give me a job 'touting' those spots? LOL!

Monterey Bay Aquarium, too, Google that one! There's zillions of places to see here in no/cal!!

If a person lives in 'the valley'...the Sacramento or San Joaquin Valley...one hour west is the Pacific Ocean...one hour or two at most is the Sierra Nevada range...a person could go surfing and snow skiing all in the same day, and stop for lunch on the way, either direction along the Sacramento River..it's a beautiful state! I hope you DO get to visit someday!

Well, yesterday I saw a squirrel laying like a pancake with a tail...and now it's raining so their tails have once again, become an umbrella...Topsy-Turvy Springtime weather here for sure!

    For all -

Please join in a VIGIL OF REMEMBRANCE FOR BARBARO Thursday, April 29, 2010 @ 7:00 p.m. EST.

(And please not to worry if you are not able to be right here @ ABR at the time, certainly understood. Your presence here will be felt from wherever you may be at the time.)

Everyone is welcome to join in wherever you are, whatever you may be doing . . .
    give a smile;
    have a toast;
    light a candle;
offer a prayer or favorite verse, or some special words of your own; however you like to honor Barbaro.

I will be with you all in spirit!

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!

I also simply must share with you all --
on my way on my morning trek across the campus commons this morning something caught my eye along the main walkway - I thought of all of you immediately!!
For there it was - a rosebush with one perfect red rose in bloom on this otherwise quiet bush (much too early here for roses)!

A single red rose much before the season, a single perfect red rose by the walkway I pass by all the time, just days before Barbaro's birthday, just days before the Run For The Roses . . . .
And yes, of course, I well remember that our beloved Barbaro particularly did not care for roses, but still famblee, in my heart it stood out as a precious sign.
Simply had to share with you all.

Holding hands, paws, and hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation!

Hugs, love, and prayers this night and always . . .

    always for the horses,
    always for Barbaro,
    always,
    Lou Ann

Morning all you happy peeples ,

I'm rejoicing with you ! dancing around the room !

Do we really have them on the run ? ?
the Tenn. horse slaughter bill withdrawn ??
The film of slaughterhouse abuses shown in Belgium on tv programs ??
The official Canadian investigation into the torture there , also known as slaughter -

Are people finally going to look and listen and see the truth ?
I'm too cynical at this point to 'really' believe it is true , but I do have a little hope that it is coming ---
Of course our Congress will be the last to come around -- due to lots and lots of money scattered around by the agricultural groups - in my humble opinion of course -- and what we really need is the federal bill. FEDERAL .
The state wins are wonderful - I'm so happy with that - so happy -
but we need the feds - only they can stop it all - stop transportation to Can and Mexico - perhaps the state wins and stops will help influence the feds, our Sens and Reps ? We can hope , and I do.

Make it a great day , you have this good news to base your great on !
And go tell it - tell it in your calls you make ,
tell it in your emails you send -
tell it all sisters / and bros too
and I wish us all good luck - and good days too.
    Bye now ,

    Hello everyone,

Just checking in here for a bit. I'm sorry I've not posted for awhile. Recovery from this second surgery is taking longer but I'm doing better each day. Just dealing with some issues with my arm (or lack of) and I can't sit at a keyboard for long. I think of you each day though, my famblee. I'm "dine & fandy" more each day. The second part of this journey starts next week, when I meet with my oncologist for the first time.

Lynne, your description of California makes me want to drive out there right now. So beautiful and I think you should ask "Ahnold" for a job in tourism.

Lou Ann, love the rose you saw. How appropriate and truly beautiful that it comes so early, and right before the Derby and Barbaro's birthday.

Robyn, since I've been home alot and looking out the windows more, I've become aware of two Huskys that take their walks each day past the house with their mom. I think of you each time and all your Husky babies, particularly Nikita.

Joan, praying for you that all will be well. And your furkids too.

And Sherry, Happy Birthday to our beautiful angel. Daryl's celebration yesterday was so touching.

Carleen, Buddy is with Barbaro and will be with him tomorrow for his birthday.

Love and prayers to you all. And remember, make those calls, send the emails and faxes and hand written letters to ensure our horses are safe.

    Dear Frens:

When people in the indu$try of racehorses, instead of being in it for the benefit of the sport or for the betterment of the breed, ie the horses themselves, actually admit to the tragic folly of their greed, I am inclined to think of it as a good start.

Here is the quote from the president of a REAL ESTATE FIRM that has invested in horse breeding as an (eeeew) 'money making venture.' Now the are in over their heads, and are losing money. Once again, this is at the expense of the horses, which as a result, has sorely damaged the Sport-of-Kings. The quote:
    ..................................................

"We ignored the notion of supply and demand," said Arnold Kirkpatrick, president of the Lexington real estate firm Kirkpatrick & Company. "We bred too many horses, overborrowed to do it, and are now caught trying to sell them to people who dont want them."
    .................................................

Frens, I know that there are many owners/trainers/people in the industry, who have the best of intentions, even aside from big-business-types in the sport. Some of them are even FOBs and they do everything possible for their horses. That being said, I just wish that the world might recognise one dusty old ancient nugget of truth/ one that has been pushed into a long forgotten corner...Horse racing began as 'The Sport-of-Kings' because you must be as RICH as a King to actually do it right. It is not for the making of money, but for the glory and the betterment of the breed.

Now, in the real world, there is a lot to consider. The 'ghosts' are coming back to haunt and to punish the 'businessmen' who have turned the sport into a badly run business. It all began to crumble when the first easily discarded horse was needlessly slain to recoup a buck. Shame and misfortune are Karma for the greed of a hardened heart.

I hope, somehow, someway, real horsemen and real horsewomen of today will be able to put it right.

OK, off soapbox now...done preaching to the choir, today....Very grateful for the victories in Tennessee, Montana, Florida, and otherstates. Also grateful for the light of truth now glaring at Canada. Let's enjoy the moment and then continue our efforts. The Love of the Frens will help to make the difference. Can I get an "Amen?"

    Loving BARBARO.

    Your FOB Fren, O

Joan, I am sorry to hear of your cutbacks, how discouraging it is to try and keep ahead. I will keep you in my prayers that Curtis will soon find employment.

I was was so shocked and outraged to read about Courage. How can these people live with themselves I will never never understand. What a beautiful soul he is and I sure hope that someone will take him and shower him with all the love and devotion he deserves.

Carleen, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of Buddy. Never is it easy to let them go on and leave us behind. God Bless you for giving him his freedom.

Lynn, when I left Calif many years ago, I discovered I could have just moved North to find the peace and beauty. California has so much to offer beyond Southern Calif and you describe it so very well. I would encourage everyone to visit the northern part, you won't be disappointed.

Skyler, God Bless you for your strength in the face of adversity. My thoughts and prayers go with you.

Hiya, FsOB, ducking in here quickly because I have to get to bed soon due to the need to head to work much earlier than usual on Thursday, 04/29 - Barbaro's birthday and the day that I celebrate Nikita's birthday! So if anyone from the "AM Shift" could seize the day here on Thursday morning, I'd be most grateful.

Alex, kudos to you for hitting your 6,000th update. Goodness, your ongoing commitment to North American horses and to Barbaro's memory is amazing! And what a treat to see the Twitpic of the first set filly from this AM.

So much positive energy here today, much is finally going in the correct direction within State legislatures and in the powerful new public education efforts in Belgium! Truly a tribute to the impact of Barbaro. I hope to be here tomorrow at 7 PM to join in the vigil to the memory of this "elegant, majestic horse", to invoke Deb's terms from earlier today. Such a treat to see folks here who haven't been able to post on a daily basis, including Skyler, Judy, & Kathryn! Who knows, perhaps tomorrow I'll see that Lillian P., Laurie H., Martita, Harriette, Dora, Sally, Nancy, & Jonna have been here, too!

Wishing everyone "ACN" and let's all meet here again tomorrow. Again, Alex, thank you for your vision and commitment. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Skyler: I was thrilled to see you here, please know that you have been in my thoughts. Ms. Nikita is making some of her unusual Husky sounds to tell you that we are glad that you have some Huskies to watch from your window.
To Joan: I hope that your two work days get restored quickly and that Curtis is called back to work pronto.
To Angel Dee: Rainbows back to you, dear Angel Dee!
To Debbie LA: You are a wealth of blue-linked info & I thank you for the news about Endorsement and the post positions this Saturday.
To Stu & Margie: Yes, awesome news from the Volunteer State!
To Lou Ann: I truly believe that the lone red rose was a sign, from "the Sublime One", who didn't want that rose laurel bedecking his neck on 05/06/2006! Thanks for organizing tomorrow night's vigil, Lou Ann. ####

I'm out the door, but had to leave this to honor our Beloved:

Before stepping into the pure light, he had run with others of his kind. The first time he ran, was as a smallone at his mother's side. Her gentle strength tempered the fiery blood of his father, and quickly channelled his wobbly exuberance into ever steadier measured foot-falls. Then, in the big pasture, he ran with another smallone. As carefree gangles, he and his first-best-fren would chase the wind.

They spent every day in the big pasture together. Sometimes there were other mares and smallones nearby, but it was mostly him and First-Best. They played all day, running and learning what to do with their ever stronger, ever LONGER four legs. They often exhausted themselves, hardly stopping to nurse or graze. It just felt so good to fly over the grass, back and forth, round and round until they could hardly stand. Then they would stop short, learning how to do that too, tumbling, rolling, and laughing with delight at the wonderful flights they had taken.

By mid afternoon, the two frens would flop down into the soft grass and fall asleep with the fragrance of clover and buttercups seeping into their sweet dreams.

With their mothers to guide them, he and First-Best, rehearsed an important song and dance. Snort, nicker, phfff, whistle, and squeal: twitch, swish, stomp, nip, and kick...all this and more, was the language of their race.

They could speak heart-to-heart, from across the pasture, or from opposite ends of the barn. But it was in the running, together, both with and against the wind, that taught him the most. It spoke volumes to his heart.

He would always remember the first time that it was he who led the parade, flying past the proud mares. His mother pricked her ears forward and said, "Well done, my little champion."

The Young Prince felt very proud. He had just run faster than everyone in the pasture. He knew that he would run even faster tomorrow. It was a great way to spend the day, and he vowed in his heart that he would live his life this way.

One Indian-summer morning, he and First-Best were led away from their mothers. It had happened before, only this time, they were not led back. Neither colt would ever again,in that otherplace, see his dam and recognize her as his mother.

Mares always cry for their little ones on separation day. It is a sad and puzzling fact that the people who bring food, warmth, guidance and a gentle touch, simply do not allow a mother to remain long with her young. They think that horses forget...but they don't . In their mothers' memory, the smallones remain forever young.

A horse mother loves and remembers all of her children. Her dreams are filled with their little faces looking up with such trust and expectation. In her dreams she beams as she watches them take their first steps, night after night, dream after happy dream. A brood mare learns to live with the heartbreak of separation, knowing that a new little life will again soon be growing inside of her. How else could she cope with losing her beloved little champion?

As the smallones were led away, they heard the cries of their mothers who remained behind. They huddled together, looking around and wondering what would happen...when would they see their moms released into the pasture, running up to find them? They cried as the long morning turned into long afternoon. By early evening, with bellies full of grass and having realized that nothing worse was going to happen, they settled into their usual frolic.

The Young Prince did not feel lonely or frightened. The people would lead, and he would comply. That is how it is between good people and good horses. At first, he would miss his mom. He thought of her warm scent, her soft voice, and the important lessons learned at her side. But, as a weanling colt, it was not his in nature to dwell in the past. He and First-Best were both looking forward into a great adventure. They had the wind to chase, and would learn a new song and a new dance...in the language and race of man.

Now, here in the pure bright light of Thisgoodplace, all around him, the songs of his own kind thrilled the Young Prince. He had many new frens. This place was where his place was...and had always been. He knew that the royal company had been waiting for him. He knew that there would be more and more coming, and that they would race the wind together. Hay, what a way to spend the day!

    Loving BARBARO,

Did anyone ever foresee that a colt born this day seven years ago would one day capture the hearts of millions? He was a gangly, mischievous little colt, nurtured by his mother, adored by the people who cared for him, beautiful and sweet, intelligent and seemingly intent on fulfilling a great desire to gallop swiftly, even flying sometimes, it seemed, like no one before him. In the terrible days following the Preakness of June, 2006, this now tall and handsome, proud colt amazed us with unrelenting will and strength to overcome his grievous injury. He tried so hard. We all tried to will him to heal and be well. Just when it seemed he was there, he had to leave. A sea of tears fell, and that sea has carried warriors who have pledged to save horses in Barbaro's memory. Each day since his passing, horses are saved, each day victories are won in the great war against slaughter and the war to improve the welfare of horses all over the world. All because of a day seven years ago, when a gangly, funny little colt came into the world. He changed the lives of so many, horses and the humans who have loved him all these years.

Happy Birthday, Barbaro. Your presence in Heaven lights the world, and the hearts of all. We'll keep our promise made in your memory forever.

Reposting a piece that was posted here in those dark days of late January, 2007, just after Barbaro had "crossed over" . . . I have kept it in my album of Barbaro . . . .

    ASCENSION

    And if I go,
    While you're still here. . .
    Know that I live on,
    vibrating to a different measure
--behind a thin veil you cannot see
    through.
    You will not see me,
    So you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar
    together again,
    --both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
    And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
    . . . . . I will be there.

Your name is etched forever on our hearts, Barbaro!

Hiya, FsOB! What a delightful treat, to see so many people here today in honour of The Sublime One's 7th birthday! Alex, thank you once again for all that you do each day for North American horses and for your ongoing commitment to Barbaro's memory.

It's been an auspicious day here. Early this AM, Brent called out to me: "Gophie's here!" (He was referring to the groundhog whom I delight in seeing in our Japanese Garden during the late Spring in Summer.) This evening, just as I crossed into CT, I saw the lovely chestnut horse named Sachem. He has white "socks" around his hind legs and a pretty star on his forehead. Wouldn't you know that he was having what Alex would refer to as his "pick of grass", whilst flicking his tail? Truly a beautiful sight for these sore eyes to see.

I'll never forget Barbaro's beauty, his intelligence, and his willingness to press on against adversity. "And it's all Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro, in a sublime performance!" May each of you have an ACN. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Lou Ann, Padme, Carleen, Sandra, Judy, & Angel Dee: Thank you for your kind words about Nikita. I am fortunate that this stunningly beautiful and gentle Husky is a part of my life.
To Otherlyn: Safe travels to your daughter's commencement in FLA. Now you can stop for dinner, if you wish, in TN! (You were planning to boycott the state if it passed the pro-slaughter legislation.
To Kathy in Colorado: My sympathies to you, may your Baylee Girl rest in peace.
To Debbie LA: I loved Joe Shelton's story about Maddie & her brother Josh. Josh's namesake looks like an incredible horse. ####

Hiya, FsOB! A glorious Spring morn has dawned here on the banks of the Thames. The birds are singing, the sun is shining on my old Connecticut home, and an odd-looking barge is gliding noiselessly down the river. And as I am wont to say once a week: TGIF! Lots to do today, I have to dash upstairs now to make cheese grits & Benedictine cheese spread for tomorrow's Derby Day fete. The Derby pies will be prepared later today and the Bourbon balls will be finished. Ahh, the rites of Spring!

May all the fillies in today's Kentucky Oaks come safely across the finish line. Likewise, may tomorrow's Kentucky Derby be a safe one. Maybe one of our FsOB (Jennie & Shirley, are you still here?) can let us know whether Louisville is still anticipated to have two inches of rain? Peace, Robyn

Jonna, I think it's a neat thought about one Barbaro's own running in the Derby. What a hoot that would be. Barbaro will not have that chance, but many Lentenor or Nicanor will. (if I have mis-spelled their beautiful names, please excuse me).
Spelling was never a strong area for me.

As we enter May I hope all of us have better times. Jobs, to pay bills, help our equine family and keep this, Barbaro's family going.

Please take care all enjoy the thrill of the Derby.

    Hey Frens,
Saw this wonderful quote from Penny Chenery this morning and now it's posted on the DB. Mrs. Chenery was talking about horse racing and said it should be marketed to women more because it's all about the horse. Then she said "We need to honor the horse more."

Here's the article. You HAVE to LOVE Mrs. Chenery!

"I didn't race this horse to win any bet … he ran because he loved to run."

That attraction, she said, needs to be marketed more to women and kids for the sport to grow.

"We're not about the odds or who was able to pick the champion," she said. "We're about a horse just getting out there and doing his very best in a way none of us can. We need to honor the horses more."

NO Horse left behind or EVER Forgotten!

I've had Barbaro on my mind all day in a very strong way. Upon further reading here I see that yesterday would have been his seventh birthday. In short, there is no other racing equine that can compare to Barbaro. He was a unique horse of great strength/determination coupled with a loving attitude towards life. I have a framed photo of Prado on top Barbaro and without fail it gives me hope on the days when I can't carry the water.

XXOX - miss you big boy

    # Kathy b , thank you so much for thinking of me , it did break my heart today. I was traveling and couldn't wait to get home to the computer to learn the results of the race. It feels like seeing a dearly loved child fail and your heart just aches for them.

    # Jen , since you are going to write such a hurtful thing on here I will answer.
When Zenyatta can run EIGHT RACES , traveling to SEVEN different tracks , win THREE against males, one of which was older males, win a leg of the triple crown defeating the Derby winner, win another defeating the Belmont winner , and break or set track records at some of them , then I will say she should be horse of the year.

you cannot stay in one state, racing the same mares and fillies FOUR times, then win one Breeder's Cup and expect to win HOTY. That doesn't add up to much of a season.

If Rachel is not the same horse this year , so what . NOTHING can change what she did last year, she set standards that might not be matched for years. She is Alexandra the Great and always will be.

Posted by: Bobbie B. at April 30, 2010 9:22 PM

ZENYATTA,horse of the century, breeders cup champion, beat the best in the world, she can also run a 1 1/4 mile race, only other mare that could do that was the GREAT Ruffian,2 greatest mares in the history of mares racing.

Posted by: John K at April 30, 2010 10:17 PM

    # Kathy b , one again I thank you for your kindness, and I apologize to all here for arguing about this.
It came from upset and hurt, seeing Rachel get kicked when she was down was so painful, but I should know better than to bring it here on Barbaro's site where his FOBs gather as famblee.
I am old enough to know better than argue this endless argument here and I won't forget again.
    Hopefully ;)

    # LIZ UK ,
I wish you and all there a great day of racing in the UK . May all be safe and come home sound.
I saw a program last evening that said the Ken. Derby was founded after the owner had made a trip to England and saw a Derby there. So many of our wonderful things here come from England.

    LOU ANN ,
thank you for thinking of me when I traveled these last 2 wks . I wish I had been near you , to visit!

    LYNNE ,
I hope you get your site linked soon today - it won't copy and paste , tried it , and I am interested in it... Carleen mentioned Murphy and I've been thinking of him this morning... he's happy in hevvin .

SANDRA AND CHIEF, always thinking of you two.

CARLEEN AND BUD , your post was so heart-touching , I've read it several times and it made me think of so many here who have lost furbabies.
We need to remember Harriette too , in prayer or thoughts. Thanks Carleen.

Do you guys remember SMARTY JONES running his little heart out and winning in the mud ? ?
Well , his son , BACK TALK , is running in the Derby today !
and they say it's rainin' there folks ,
could it be like father like son ? ? ?
I have a sentimental feeling for Smarty , always have had ( where do these things come from ? )

So , if I get nerve to watch the Derby , with my hands over one eye at least ,
I'll be pulling for Back Talk - - for Smarty !
Although my head tells me Super Saver or Mission
Impazible will win , my heart is with Smarty's boy,... although I like Ice Box a lot ! Ice Box is
    a powerhouse runner ...
I SO WISH FOR A SAFE RACE
and for all to come home sound ,
and if you have a fave - -- good luck !

May you all have good Saturdays and Happy Weekend to you ! Bye now,

    A Derby Day Tribute:

The Young Prince rolled on the soft grass of Thisgoodplace. High above, in the bluest of skies, a cloud bloomed, slowly unfolding like a rose. He remembered the look, feel, and smell of roses. The gentle lady had worn one on her hat, on the bestess day ever. It was the day that he and Egger ran a race with a whole herd of horses. The grey rose on that hat matched the color of the gentle lady's eyes.

He felt a twinge of regret, for the bad manners he displayed that day. When they tried to give him the high honor of putting roses around his neck, he rudely balked. He was still pumped with the exhilaration of having run his best race. Hot, and excited, at that moment, he wanted no part of a blanket of roses. However, he did feel sorry about that, later. For when he settled down, they put the roses on the door of his stall. He put his nose into them, and enjoyed their sweet scent. He was the only horse in the barn to have them that day...a door swathed with roses, and a big handfuls of carrots.

Yes, that race was just the bestess. The wind was with him, like never before. The air crackled with the energy of thousands of people, 20 horses, 20 riders, and the wind.

Everyone was excited. There was a frenzy of extra preparation going on. Mike-o had had a heart-to-heart talk with him, the night before, and Wardo's heart sang all that morning. They were happy, but very tightly wound.

"Run for the Roses"..."Run for the Roses." Everywhere, all the time, even weeks before, he had been hearing that phrase, over and over again. It came into his world via the hearts and minds of everyone around him. There were the voices in the boxes, and more and more of those men and women with bright lights, talking into sticks. There were grooms, and riders, even the other horses singing the phrase in their minds and hearts. They all knew that it would soon be time to run for the roses. It was a high honor...very important.

The smell of roses was on the wind even as they all turned onto the track for the post parade. There was none of the usual rough, jocular taunting, horse to horse that day. Each was singing his own song, blending with that of his rider. It was all business, and one refrain..."Run...Run for the Roses."

He remembered hearing voices on the wind as they all stood in the gate. Even above the distant bee-hive-hum of the crowd, and the sharp barks of the gate workers, other voices sang to him. They were his people. They were the ones who loved him. Their hearts had found their way on the wind to urge him forward, with confidence and power.

The bell rang, the gate opened, and then...he stumbled, but Egger's strong hands kept him steady, and he recovered right away. Egger's heart spoke to him, and the two of them ran as one.

It was easy. The wind held him up, high in the air, as his feet flew over the ground. That little stumble in the gate didn't mean much. He had pushed off a little too hard with his right rear foot. It turned the ankle a bit when he righted himself, but it wasn't really anything deserving of a second thought. He was running for the roses, and the wind had said, "Let's go!" Egger urged him forward and the rest was easy.

The other horses; Warrior, Cat, The Two, Brother, Cause, Glitterer, Bull, Zil, Key, Law, Point, Vow, Retreat, Humor, Show, Minister, Wolf, Treasure, and Saint, all leaped into the wind, each of the same conviction that it was they who had a great appointment with destiny.

They chased it with gallant hearts. Their riders tasted horse-sweat and chewed the manes of their mounts. Through sheer grit and fierce determination the thundering herd pushed on. They survived the crushing entry of g-force-like velocity, bumping and shoving for position and pace. In the center of the pack, the Young Prince endured. As Egger confidently guided him through the fray, the hearts of Love urged them on. Was it they who made the difference? For he knew the wind was with him.

Key pulled ahead as they approached the first turn. He set a quick pace with Minister, Humor, and Show.

"Hhchff, hhchff"... run...fly...drink great gulps of wind!

    "Uhhh, uhhh...chooof chooof" ...eyes ahead...ears pinned...push...push...push

Egger's heart and hands then spoke,

"Fa`cil, mi amigo. Tenemos tiempo...(Easy, my friend. We have time)."

He listened to Egger's heart and hands. He settled in and stalked the pace.

What great fun this was...running...running for the roses. The quick pace was invigorating. It fueled him with resolve. With every stride, he gained strength and will. It came not only from somewhere inside of himself, but from the greatness and determination of the horses and the men running with him.

These horses felt it too. He was sure of it. The joy of running as one great herd came from a place deep in the desires of their hearts. Totally aside from the business at hand, the heart of each great racer gratefully received the gift.

First turn, "Hhchff hhchff," stalk a bit..."hhchfff hhchff," then press....Sail past Humor...

    "Fa`cil.... fa-a-a-a`cil....(Easy....e-e-e-easy.....)"

Saint came up to the front runners speeding in determined fashion, seeking position and opportunity, as again did Humor. A fast approaching wall of horses thundered behind. They all geared for what was to come, each anticipating the moment of "asking"... the release into the wind.

    5/16ths, stalking in 3rd. ...

From behind came the sound of heart-songs, full of challenge and hope. One was Cat telling everyone that he was coming...and there was the song of Wolf, trumpeting his resolve.

    ...then into 2nd...

Their valiant heart-songs, the growing roar of the crowd, the sound of the pounding of 80 metal shod hoofs upon the dirt, were mere obstacles to be passed and left with the rest running behind him. Whistling whips, clicks, chirps and urging of the riders, blending with the grunts and heavy breathing of the other horses, became the background music for the great vision of victory set before him.

1/8th..."? Listo, mi amigo?. (Ready, my friend?)"

The crowd's roar, and a very loud voice suddenly began to intrude upon his thoughts. It carried its own electric energy, and all of the horses felt it. The Young Prince pricked his ears forward. He caught and listened to the magnificent roar that surrounded them all. It drew him. It pleased him. It excited him. Yet, in all of this, he heard within the power of the roar, the soft music of three heart-songs, singing:

"I am with you, my swift brother."

"I know you can do it. I prayed, and the rainbow showed me that you would."

"Undefeated...even my own cheeldren are not zis."

Approaching the last turn, Egger chirped a small kiss to the wind. Then his hands "asked."

Bounding to the front, and pulling away from the herd, the Young Prince and Egger drove into the ever advancing din. The cheers of thousands of people met them and urged them forward as they headed into the stretch. They knew that no one would catch them. Now they flew, just because they could.

It's a magical thing when the wind claims you as its own. You simply leap into it and fly. As it fills your lungs, and sings in your ears, you leave the earth far below, and soar with the heart of heaven. You also get out ahead of the dirt being kicked up into your face.

They rode upon the tension of the thrilled throng for the last several powerful strides. Nothing would equal the exhilaration of the moment when they crossed the finish line. They had vanquished 38 of the most worthy opponents, and had prevailed in the Run-for-the Roses.

Now that they had won, the two of them would continue to fly just a bit further, in the pure joy of savoring the victory together. Egger's heart spoke to the Young Prince. His few quiet words, and the touch of his hand upon the Prince's neck would always and forever remain a most special moment between them.

At the apex of the excitement the loud voice had said over and over again, that it was ALL the Young Prince. However much later that night, in the quiet of the barn after the hoopla of celebration had dissolved and everyone had gone home, the Young Prince reflected upon the glory of the day's events. With the scent of the roses upon his door perfuming the still night air, the Young Prince relaxed and slipped into a sweet dream filled slumber. As he drifted off, he remembered it all this way...It was he, Egger, and the hearts of Love, who took this magnificent ride together.

Oh yes, roses are very special. The memory of that bestest day was pure delight. It would always be with him, and only a thought away.

Only a moment before, he had looked to the sky, and the sky unfurled a b-i-i-i-g beautiful rose. The Young Prince held the moment in high regard.

Alex...agreed! NBC needs letters not that they would listen...but the Red Carpet people..I could CARE LESS...It's the KENTUCKY DERBY...NOT THE OSCARS! and yes, aside from me learning that sloppy tracks aren't more dangerous...but that special shoes/nails can be applied to hooves, likened to cletes on other athletic shoes...Gary Stevens has, thusfar, been the best to listen to!

*GENERAL QUARTERS* Just made his retired H/S Principal owner/trainer and groom all in one, SRSLY HAPPY:)

So awfully sad to me that NBC misses the mark in that the *HORSES* are the *STARS* today...and there's plenty of time to 'tout' Golf, Soccer, Hockey and Baseball...they don't need to to do it today, imho.

    Hi Everyone,
WOW another derby where they all came home safe and sound. I choose Paddy O' Prado, can't imagine why. ;) Calvin did it again, he is such an incredible jockey. Seeing Nick Zito was nice.
Thank goodness the sun come out I was a bit scared of the mud. My biggest problem of the day our Edgar was not there...what a void. He was missed.
Anohter derby down and now on to the Preakness in two weeks.

I'm still not working and mom is only so so, she has I think very small strokes going on. I am going to see she has blood work and we go to the Dr. Her spirits are good she just wants to be strong again.
I love you all and do my part to fight for our beloved horses every day. Enough are getting saved at the NJ feedlot. It also seems that the word on slaughter is getting out and the states are responding. As long as we keep the pressuer on and don't let up. I know we are being heard. Finally, Our hard work after all these years is finally taking hold. BRAVO FOB's!!!

I love you all very much! I never leave home.

    I love you dearest Barbaro!

Yesterday was quite a day. I caused myself heartache and pain that won't go away. I went to the DB and read about the HS videos. Those poor babies sticking their heads forward for a skritch or carrot only to be shot. Oh boy. I should have known better than to read it. At least I didn't watch the videos.

So I hurried on over the the Miracle Horse CAM for some healing. There has been heartache there also, but with a great love. Our little Hagan passed peacefully in her sleep the other day. And when she went for her final ride all the other horses on the ranch whinnied goodbye to her. Jerri, our PMU rescue even ran the fence to say goodbye. See? They know and care for each other! Watching baby Electra soothed my soul.

Great news that all horses were safe after the Derby. But I wish there had been more focus on the horses themselves, instead of the celebrities, owners, trainerS, jockeys and that guy that made 900,000.00. Hope he sends some of it back to benefit the horses.

Thanks for letting me vent. It's been a tough weekend. Love my FOB famblee!

Thanks, Renee. Hagan was 42 and she went peacefully. But it was heartwarming and amazing to hear about her sendoff from the other horses.

    ## Kathyb , sending you a big hug (()) and hope you are feeling better today ;)

    # Renee , so good to hear from you , and I'm sorry your Mom is in poor health. I know it's hard , but you're a wonderful daughter for being there. Hugs to you too (())

Congrats to Calvin and SuperSaver . ( no disrespect intended , but doesn't his name sound like a grocery store ? I wish people wouldn't do that to horses )
I love Calvin , he's my fave of course cause he's Rachel's jockey , and I'm happy for Super Saver and his peeples .....

I'm just so glad there were no accidents in the slop they ran in. Smarty's son Back Talk didn't do so well ... sorry about that , but he'll have another time , another chance.

Good night to all FOBs wherever you be , know that you have the love of Barbaro's fam-ba-lee.
    Bye now ,

Hiya, FsOB! What a Kentucky Derby it was, I was so worried due to the track conditions. It was a pleasure and comfort to have another FOB with us here on the banks of the Thames on 05/01/10. Kudos to Calvin Borel for his tremendous accomplishment. For all of you here who know horses much better than I do, is Super Saver somewhat small in size? He seemed so to me, but I know less than most of you do about horses. I was truly thankful that everyone came across that muddy finish line safely yesterday. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Liz: I considered you & Tony to have been with us in spirit. We had an unseasonably balmy and sunny Saturday. The lilacs are in full, robust bloom & folks spent most of the afternoon outside, enjoying the fair weather.
To Elisabeth: Thank you for trekking across the state to see us. It wouldn't be the Derby without your being with us here!
To Joan: I hope that Peaches is fully recovered. Ditto for the bunny, Joan.
To Sandra: I almost started crying when I opened a box of Nilla Wafers to make Bourbon balls Thursday PM. I was overcome with thoughts of your dear Chief, Sandra.
To Otherlyn: Your story of The Young Prince never ceases to touch my heart.
To Bobbie B: I must agree with you about Super Saver's names, some names just lack that "Derby panache". But he looks like a sweet bay horse, nonetheless. "A rose by any name...."
To Renee: I am sorry that your Mom's health status is precarious, Renee. Your Mother is fortunate to have a devoted daughter. ####

Hiya, FsOB! A grey, rainy Monday morning has dawned here on the banks of the Thames. We must be getting the remnants of the rains that besieged Churchill Downs on Saturday.

Wishing everyone a safe & productive day! Peace, Robyn

    #### To Kathy B: May little Hagen rest in peace.
To Joan: Hoping that Peaches and Pierre have a more comfortable week.
To Margie in NM; How is Teddy doing these days? ####

All home SAFELY on Saturday. Thank God! Now, pray for Louisiana and the gulf coast, about to go through the worst nightmare. Pray for the wildlife that they may be spared. This will be the worst environmental disaster ever.

Anyone else think Calvin is a little crazy for predicting a Triple Crown for Super Saver??
