    Barbaro Updates: 990

    updates are now here.

Update 5901: More frigid weather at Fair Hill. The tracks were closed for training, but I went in and shedrowed four for Michael Pino. A straightforward morning, all bundled up.

Rachel Alexandra got back to work this morning with a very easy half mile breeze in 52.

Yesterday we learned about new slaughter rules for horses in Canada. When they come in to place it will mean essentially quarantining slaughter-bound horses for 6 months, which will add considerable costs to the slaughter system. Also of note are the medications that are banned from any horses that are slaughtered regardless of when those medications are given. These include bute, which is of course used at one point or another with pretty much every horse. Compliance seems to be a key issue: Horse slaughter rules changing in Canada .

Update 5900: Only two ridden this morning for me at Fair Hill. And that was fine by me, another frigid morning. Both just jogged in the shedrow.

Last night was Sovereign Awards night in Canada. The Canadian equivalent to the Eclipse Awards. I was excited to see Tribal Belle win the female sprint division. I rode her a few times, but not in 2009, in 2008: Champs Elysees wins Sovereign award.

Another light weekend for graded stakes racing: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies.

Penn National has asked the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission to investigate Gill: PENN NATIONAL REQUESTS INVESTIGATION INTO MICHAEL GILL.

Update 5899: It was brutally cold this morning at Fair Hill. 18F with a wind. I rode three, and was very thankful to be done when I was finished. All mine went nicely, not that I would have been able to do a whole lot if they decided not to go well!

Dubai's racing season opened yesterday, and it is a new era with their new Tapeta surface: Gloria de Campeao grabs glory in Meydan opener.

Things are ongoing with Michael Gill. The good thing about the era of internet and social media, this situation just won't easily be brushed away. Kind of like the Ernie Paragallo situation. Two people that horse racing does not need.

January 29, on this morning three years ago Barbaro was euthanized.

    And please keep calling.

Update 5898: I have ridden four so far this morning at Fair Hill. I am now waiting on one more to work, we are waiting for the dirt track to open. Hopefully soon, but thankfully Michael Pino has a computer inn his barn office. So far my four horses went nicely. This included one worker on the Tapeta. And our blacksmith came again this morning, bringing with him his usual companions, Corky and Cali.

The Gill saga continues: GILL THREATENS TO SUE THE PAULICK REPORT.

    And please keep calling.

Update 5897: Five ridden for Michael Pino this morning at Fair Hill. And it was a chilly morning too, but at least the sun was out. All mine went nicely.

Maggi Moss speaks out regarding the Michael Gill saga: MAGGI TO MIKE: 'PLEASE GET OUT OF RACING'. Maggi has been very helpful in retiring horses and really loves our sport. She also happens to own my favorite horse, Salty!

Yesterday I was in DC for a hearing regarding the horse slaughter issue: Members of Congress, Celebrities, The HSUS Speak Out Against Horse Slaughter and Highlight Need to Protect Wild Horses. Of course it also meant I got to hang out with beatiful people: Kelly Carlson. Anyway, it was a good event I think, and hopefully we can start to pick up some momentum in Washington.

Steve Haskin takes a very early look at the Derby picture and focuses on two trainers, Baffert and Pletcher. Lentenor also gets a mention after his terrific maiden score last week: Kentucky Derby Trail: Battle Stations!.

    And please keep calling.

Update 5896: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

Here at Superfecta HQ, we've been busily working away on our redesign; things are finally (more or less) done - we hope you enjoy the new look and feel. If you had any individual posts bookmarked, many will forward to the new site, but a few will get stuck partway through - just hit the search box to track the errant ones down (and I'll spare you my talk on the effect moving from Blogger to WordPress has on linking and SEO). And please check to ensure that 'blogspot' is absent from any links you may have - we're just superfectablog.com.

With that out of the way, we can review the weekend's events: most notably, Winslow Homer went from a slightly-under-the-radar buzz horse to an official buzz horse in his Holy Bull victory. Favored Jackson Bend certainly did not harm his reputation in a second-place finish, however, and the two will likely meet again in the Fountain of Youth. I remain a bit hesitant about Winslow Homer, however, since both his sire and dam seemed to peak early - he may yet prove to be one of those precocious colts we don't hear from again after March of his 3-year-old year - but I'm willing to wait to see how things pan out. If you are not already keeping track of Derby preps with Raceday 360's handy spreadsheet, it's time to start - for those who like numbers at this time of year, it's worth noting that A Little Warm is the only colt to post a triple-digit Beyer in a Derby prep so far - but we're a long way from May.

Things went well on the comeback front: Friesan Fire and General Quarters finished one-two in the Louisiana Handicap - both 2009 Derby trail graduates proved their quality this time, finishing a long way in front of third-place finisher Good and Lucky. It's encouraging to see both of them back in professional style, since we just lost Papa Clem to retirement (via an ankle injury) after his own comeback win. While I cannot see either one offering a serious challenge to Rachel Alexandra or Zenyatta at this point, both should continue to mature into grownup racehorses of quality - and they could be quite exciting to watch by the time summer rolls around. In the meantime, we should see Quality Road in the Donn - we'll have more on that as the race approaches.

On the ownership side of the game, there are a few odd stories kicking around - make of them what you will!

Update 5895: This week's Facebook Group e-mail: Fair Hill, Justin Shepherd, Ramon Dominguez, Lentenor, Johnny Velasquez, La Ville Rouge, Michael Gill, ABR Horse Slaughter contest, River Downs, Chad Moore.

    More Michael Gill coverage:

Penn jockeys: Gill horses a safety risk
Penn Temporarily Bans Horses Owned by Gill
Jockeys focus on owner Gill after Penn National breakdowns

I am now off to Fair Hill to get on a couple of horses for Michael Pino, and then to Washinngton DC to talk about the horse slaughter topic.

Update 5894: I shedrowed three horses this morning for Michael Pino at Fair Hill. It was a warm morning, but we are getting plenty of rain. A very straightforward morning's work.

Saturday night, jockeys at Penn National refused to ride the sixth race unless a horse owned by Eclipse Award winning owner Michael Gill was scratched. More here: GILL CENTER OF CONTROVERSY AGAIN.

    And please keep calling.

    Comments

Alex, thank you for posting the Gill article. While so many people are working diligently to make racing safer for horses and present a better racing image to the public, what Gill does is outrageous.

If anyone isn't a Richard Migliore fan, I think you should be. The "Mig" was riding a horse that brokedown at Aqueduct on Saturday (sadly, Honest Wildcat" was euthanized) and "Mig" suffered a concussion. But, before the ambulance took "Mig" to the hospital, he comforted the horse! Excerpt: "Jockey Richard Migliore showed [compassion] Saturday after being involved in a frightening spill during the first race.

The soon-to-be 46-year-old got to his hands and knees and crawled over to comfort his fallen mount, Honest Wildcat, who suffered a fracture to his right front leg.

Petting the fallen animal's neck in his dirt-covered silks, Migliore stayed with the horse until the EMS staff arrived...."

What a fantastic thing to do. Mr. Migliore, I salute your kindness and love for horses.

Morning, er , afternoon everybody ,
Carnival Cruise Lines was in my email and I have spent too much time browsing , looking at the warm yellow sun - filled islands and palms and blue seas and spacious staterooms aboard their ( magic -genie) ships that sail you to unbelievable paradises of spasms of happiness and fun. Gee , I might go ! It was fun to look at the pictures.

ANYWAY , I've wasted a lot of time already today, and haven't done my calls or emails. But I will, frens , I will in a jiffy .
I will light candles on the 29th and always remember - always, just like you.

Our rain is gone , and we have bright sun and will be in the high 50s today - so different than yesterday.
Make it a nice day , FOBs , and ttyl, bye now,

Kudos to "Mig" and his big heart, even in light of his own injuries. RIP Honest Wildcat, run with Barbaro, and know that you were shown love and respect as you made that ultimate sacrifice. Let us hope that Mig recovers without incident and is rewarded for his compassion and selflessness.

    KENNET FLORIST UPDATE

I just spoke with Rachel at KF and she said that the collection for the donor horse basket is "coming along". Please, if anyone has not donated and would like to, call her asap at 610-444-6040.

With the budget cuts at UPenn, Libby and the donor animals do not receive anything except through donations. According to Rachel, Libby has a quite a number of animals to care for. Let's make sure that each animal receives at least a little something.

Alie and the gang at KF have always gone beyond the call of duty for us. Please send something if you are able - this basket is our way to remember Barbaro to the folks at New Bolton.

    Thanks.

Thank you for posting the info on Mig's compassion. My heart moved, and tears fell. When something touches your heart, you cry.

The post evoked sadness, gratefulness, admiration, and (strangely),hope.

Thank you for posting the information...albeit very sad.

Wish to thank Alex, Wendy, Mary L, and Amy for all the hard work they do to keep this site clean of porn and bad comments. It's no easy task to keep on top of this site. And Alex keeping it going at his expense, it's for the horses. We are here to stop horse slaughter, and the injustice to the horses. Here in the fight, we have to appreciate all they do for us! Please don't take them for granted, this work comes with big headaches for all of them. And very little gratitude!
Thanks for putting up with us!

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!

As our ANGEL DEE says, "It is AFFIRMED!"
    Indeed it is.

Holding hands, paws, and hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation!

SOFIE'S LEE - Thank you, Sir, for posting that news about 'MIG', though of course I am so very sorry about Honest Wildcat.
Now that is what I call a real gem of a man, that he got himself to his mount to comfort him. Sounds like someone else we all know, our beloved Edgar.
These are the stars that shine so bright when the rest of the sky is so very black.
    Thanks for sharing that, Lee!!
    How is your precious Princess??

Hope everyone is safe from the wild weather in whatever location you happen to be!
We were only expecting torrential rains last night (Sunday), but it was also accompanied with horrid winds, very very bad. There is massive debris everywhere today and still many homes without power this evening. Lots of flooding in surrounding areas.
So we pray you all are safe, too!

Already took care of my arrangements for remembering Barbaro but 1/29 will always be a difficult day, though being here at this sacred place with each of you always blankets me in comfort.

Prayers for all here walking the rugged path, missing beloveds . . . .

    Love you much
    always, Lou Ann

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, you've given us some very compelling blue-links today. Have jockeys at a US track ever taken the sort of group action similar to what occurred with regard to Michael Gill's racing entries? I can't recall ever reading or hearing previously about this type of collective action due to safety concerns. Very exciting and thought-provoking! Somehow I sense our own CJ's spirit shining on their effort, don't you?

Thanks to Sofie's Lee for the info about Richard Migliore's efforts to comfort his fallen horse at Aqueduct. Wow, I agree with Debbie LA, Lou Ann, or whomever said earlier that "the Mig's" concern hearkens back to Edgar Prado supporting Barbaro's efforts to stand following Bobbey's injury in the Preakness in 2006. May Richard's concussion heal quickly and fully.

I am "knackered" after a nerve-wracking drive home in a nor'easter this evening. After that commute, I skipped exercising when I got home and instead asked Brent to make me a small Manhattan to have with our dinner. Before signing off, I second Debbie LA's kudos to Alex, Wendy, Mary, & Amy for all they do to maintain this site. Peace, Robyn

Posted by: Robyn Hoffmann at January 26, 2010 1:27 AM

Robyn , so glad you 'weathered' the drive home and arrived safely. We have winds in NC , Lynne has or had them in CA , my daughter has them in NY , Lou Ann has them in PA -- I wonder if nature thinks it is March already ? ?

The jockey going to the horse on hands and knees in touching , very . It is a dangerous sport sometimes.

Goodnight all you FOBs , and I hope you have warm cozy nights , and God bless all who are out in the weather - 2 and 4 legged all. bye now.

Hiya, FsOB! It's a dark and damp Tuesday morning, but at least the winds seems to have dissipated. Alex, please have a safe trip to DC this AM. Thanks for bluelinking the articles about the jockeys' safety concerns at Penn National. Wishing all here a safe & productive Tuesday! Peace, Robyn

    #### To BobbieB.: Yes, what month is it, meteorologically-speaking? I don't recall that type of nor'easter usually occurring in RI in January.
To Lou Ann: Please tell Ms. Annie that I envy those tuxedo cats getting "tasties" (snacks) from Ms. Annie. Brent won't eat pot roast, so I rarely get to enjoy myself at home. ####

    Lou Ann R,
Princess is doing well. We're working on her incontinence first and in a couple of weeks we'll start on the Cushing's testing and treatment. We wanted to get her incontinence medication settled first. Thanks so much for asking.

I too, thought of Edgar Prado when reading of Richard Migliore's compassion. They are cut from the same cloth.

    Alex,
Wish I had known earlier you were coming to DC. I would be happy to be there to support your efforts. Welcome to the center of perdition.

    Famblee:

We lost one of our best friends and most willing volunteers ever this week.

She was in her THIRD battle with the frakking MONSTER: cancer.

Her greyhounds will be at the services, and so will all of us.

Not surprising, but it blew me away like a gust of n'oreaster wind--she asked that checks be made out to Greyhounds of Central New York, Inc., in lieu of flowers.

I cried about that on and off all day.

Like so many of our beloved people, she waited till her husband Fran JUST stepped out to get a cup of coffee to fly home. It is amazing to me how often this happens...perhaps we are not supposed to witness the spreading of wings, the magnificence of departure....who knows.

Here is a wonderful Emily Dickinsen poem for Nancy.
    *************************************************

    FAREWELL.

Tie the strings to my life, my Lord,
Then I am ready to go!
Just a look at the horses --
    Rapid! That will do!

Put me in on the firmest side,
    So I shall never fall;
For we must ride to the Judgment,
    And it's partly down hill.

But never I mind the bridges,
    And never I mind the sea;
    Held fast in everlasting race
By my own choice and thee.

Good-by to the life I used to live,
    And the world I used to know;

Jonna so sorry for the lost of your best friend.
    So much bad news here!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at January 26, 2010 2:29 PM

    Good Morning....Tuesday Morning, ABR Family:)

Weather was again wet here yesterday, not 'slamming' wet..but wet nonetheless...not complaining because we so need this wet stuff! I saw bits of reports of news on KCRA last night and somewhere near Lake Tahoe..the people on roof of an elementary school there, using MONGO sized saw blades...removing REFRIGERATOR sized blocks of snow from the rooftop! That should give everyone a 'picture' of the snowfall they/we are experiencing in no/cal:) That snow equals water for the Sacramento Valley and parts of the San Joaquin Valley as well I think, so it's VERY EXCELLENT....very excellent indeed:) Same for us, snowfall 'up-country' equals water for us, too...and though I doubt they've had to remove refrigerator sized blocks of snow from rooftops, I did see we are at 111% percent of snowfall now...keep it coming, Mom Nature, we've been without for nearly four years, the 'normal' amounts.

Wind was blowing as I turned the lights off and that gave me concern...remember when I said last week we'd been without electricity from 10:30a on Wednesday to around 3:30a on Thursday...Well..seems we had 'Tornado Like Winds' here in my area and those winds took out SIX TELEPHONE POLES...they had to set them with a HELICOPTER because of where they are located...been just a crazy time for the local Pacific Gas & Electric Linemen...something like 40 trucks, tractors and lest I forget the HELICOPTER! I can now certainly understand why it took them so long to 'patch things up' and put my lights back on last week...and they've spent thusfar 3 days and counting getting those poles set and re-strung with wires...out in rancher's cow pastures with those ever-so-large line trucks makes for an unusual pasture mate for the cows!

I read the article about Mr. Migliore, God bless him! I also went to pedigreequery.com to see about *HONEST WILDCAT*....he had 10 starts, 1 win, 0 place, 1 show. Career earnings were $35,790 and I think he was three years old.

I saw names in his lineage I recognized, Storm Cat being one of them.

Run free beautiful boy...gone too soon.

Jonna..beautiful poem for your dear friend...and how lovely that in lieu of flowers, donations to your organization have been requested (((jonna/fran/greys)))

I hope everyone will have a good day today, be safe/dry/warm as you can, until you are 'home again, home again, clippity-clop' :)

    Lynn,

Good Tuesday morning....I was reading about the six telephone poles that had fallen and to be reset by helicopter...the reason fallen telephone poles interest me is in our back yard there is a telephone pole. It's left over from when they rezoned this area for residential some 40 or 50 years ago. Man I would hate to that thing come down. It would ruin the neighborhood squirrels play area and cause havic on my dining room table.

The wind has calmed down but the rain continues to fall.

I do miss Joe and but I still read Jim Gath's blog. I'm sending out what I can to those in need.
I just wish it could be more.

Have a good day folks and try to stay dry.

    * * * FINAL DAYS TO JANUARY 29TH * * *

Please don't forget to donate to the Laminitis Fund at UPenn in honor of Barbaro. See the thread on the DB for all of the links and also to contribute to the basket for the donor horses, if you wish.

Also, please stop here on the 29th to say hello and light some candles to light up the sky for our beloved horse.

    Thanks all.

    KENNET FLORIST UPDATE

I spoke with Rachel at KF yesterday and she said that the collection for the donor horse basket is "coming along".

    Thanks.

Carleen...might be worth a call to the local PG&E office to see if they'd come remove that pole for you...dunno if they would still be legally responsible for it after all this time, but worth a try?

I felt really badly, because I was SRSLY muttering to myself without lights/heat for so many hours...muttering about why they couldn't have been restored already...but when I read online last night of just WHY it had taken so long for them to re-route the electricity and then begin spending so many days fixing things...I felt truly badly! Overtime checks will be enormous...but I shudder to think how exhausted those poor linemen must have been...I take back all the 'mutterings' and replace with KUDOS to every one of them:)

Go to the Discuss and Chat board and click on horse rescue issues and read "Horse stabbed to death needs a voice" where you will find out what you can do to keep the murderer in the slammer. There is an address to write to the judge who is going to sentence him.

    Thanks!

Hiya, FsOB! I hope that everyone is safe & warm this evening. Does anyone know if Joe & Cathy Shelton have electrical power after the storms in CA? I saw the same TV footage that Lynne B. did this AM, of the de-snowing of flat-surfaced buildings adjacent to Lake Tahoe. That process is what our Marg in Maine was describing last week.

    Wishing everyone "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    #### To Jonna: My heart goes out to you as your friend Nancy has passed due to cancer. If only that disease might be stamped out in our lifetime.... Jonna, please know that I am with you in spirit. What a generous thing your friend Nancy has done, to request that GH rescues be funded instead of having flowers sent to her funeral.
To Sandra: I understand so well what you described about needing to continue to process Chief's passing prior to bringing another dog into your home. Please know that I, too, missed seeing you here, as did Carleen. Hoping that your knee improves with the cortisone treatments. Please know that I was sharing one of your stories with Brent just the other day, describing Chief's friendship with the plumber.
To Sofie's Lee: Glad to hear that Princess is making steady improvements, Lee.
To Nancy in CT: I hope that the pneumonia has resolved and that Sir Seamus is taking good care of you! ####

Jonna , I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. May she rest in peace.
    (( Jonna and Tuck ))

Lee , Princess is in my prayers, give her a pat for me, and a nice kind word of good wishes.

Only three days now until the 29th.
I read today on the db that the 29th is also Rachel Alexandra's birthday and I love her so. Makes me feel schtzophrenic in a way. There will never be another like Barbaro
although we may love others of course. He is my heart horse forever.

May all of you having such uproarious weather have a quiet nice night , and may Mother Nature let you sleep without wind throwing things your way !
I read here today about someone cutting refrigerator - sized blocks of ice from their roof ? ? Did I get that wrong ?
I can't imagine such a climate - I rather live here , where we just have little things like tornados every spring , and a hurricane or three coming up the coast every summer-fall, LOL.

I guess every climate has its drawbacks. But I do like snow , just love it , and we here don't get enough.
And I like FOBs too , just love them actually.
Good night , frens , bye now.

PLEASE everyone, go to the Thread and get the information, included is a link to the newspaper article there in Troy, NY with more information on the SCUM who did this:/ OMG! Not only did he stab her twenty times..but before he did, he put her into a small stall so she had NO CHANCE OF ESCAPE....she'd been rescued by the woman who owned her..she'd been emaciated and the woman who saved her from heading to slaughter loved her so much and this IDIOT person comes in and kills her so heinously....oh, Grrrrrrrr, Family!

I hope the judge will read our letters and give him the maximum sentence allowed by law!

Hiya, FsOB! The sky is brightening over the Thames with each passing minute. I was cheered to read that Kip Deville is showing signs of improvement and that all associated with him are cautiously optimistic that he'll win the fight against laminitis. What an awful disease! If anyone can spare even a few dollars to fight laminitis, please consider a contribution to UPENN's Laminitis Research Fund prior to 01/29, in honour of Barbaro.

I also read this AM about the genesis of the name of the 3-year old TB Winslow Homer. Firstly, I hadn't realized that Rick Porter (who so loved & cared for Eight Belles) was associated with Winslow Homer. But it turns out he picked the name because the great American painter Winslow Homer had a famous painting named - you guessed it! - Eight Bells! Very cool, as Alex would say.

And in closing, rest in peace Kinsella. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Deb Anderson, might you repost the info for UPENN today in case anyone might be able to make a contribution prior to 01/29? Thanks, Deb!

Posted by: Lynne Brown at January 27, 2010 2:47 PM

##Sandra, if I may add to what the others have said in response to your question "Does this make sense?" Yes, it absolutely does. Chief is an important part of your life and he will always, always be in your heart. When the raw pain becomes a manageable ache (and that will happen), a dog who needs the love and the care you have to offer will come into your life - Chief will see to it! The ache will surely always be there - and, I don't think that's such a bad thing. My Arnie and Jake still let me know three years later they are there, in my heart, even though I have two other dogs (and two cats!) to love. And after the tears, always a smile for everything they mean to me and the years we shared. As Mrs. Jackson said "grief is the price we pay for love". It's a price we're willing to pay to have them in our lives. You'll know when the right dog comes along or wanders into your life! There will be "something" there that will become a bond, never just like the one you have with Chief, but so special in its own way to match the individual your new dog will be. It will happen. I BELIEVE

*WARPAINT* and his 'brother' *DAKOTA* are headed to the land of lakes and green grasses...and won't have to endure such hot/dry AZ summers anymore! Wheeeeeee!! Dear Friends,

With the new year comes our call for January 29th and donations to UPenn for the Laminitis Fund or the Barbaro Fund. This will be the third year we have remembered Barbaro's passing with donations to UPenn. Although times are pretty tough, it is particularly urgent this year that we try to remember especially the Laminitis Fund in light of Kip Deville's fight against this horrid disease.

Donations may be made online at the UPenn site - www.vet.upenn.edu/giving. You may also call (215) 898-1480 or send your gift to Office of Development and Alumni Relations, BW 125, University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, MC-6047, 3160 Chestnut Street, Ste 500, Philadelphia, PA 19104-9959. Please be sure that you tell them this is in memory of Barbaro.

Contributions for the basket for the donor horses at NBC may be made directly to Kennett Florist. Snail mail is 405 W. State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348 Phone number: 610-444-6040 or online at www.kennettflorist.net The basket is to be delivered on the 27th.

Although it is too late for snail mail to arrive before the 29th (unless you live next door, and even then I wouldn't be too sure), donations received after the 29th will still be much appreciated. Please do not hesitate to contribute even after the 29th.

Thank you for remembering Barbaro and all of his friends at New Bolton.

JOE FINALLY...GO AND LOOK AT THE PIX.
    **************************************************
    Wednesday, January 27th...

Amazing, and a treat, the number of military people who read Tbfriends.

This e-mail from Robyn, stationed near San Diego:
Only 34 more days to go. And then I can begin a new chapter in my life. With thoroughbreds at my side.

And this from Greg, currently stationed in Georgia: Ever try a sweet potatoe pie topped with buttermilk fried chicken? Unfriggin believable.

Also a treat... the number of families asking to be foster homes for Tbfriends. Including an amazing lady in a town called Elverta. She helps dogs, cats, birds, and children with struggling parents. I had to ask her, when do you sleep?

There is a family right here in our town of Woodland. Mom, dad, kids, and all the usual pets. When the mud goes away, the family would like to foster two old thoroughbreds. There will be carrots and daily hugs. After seeing a Bob Dylan cd in their living room, the family was immediately approved.

It was 5 years ago when How Lou Doin came to us from a race track. Lou made the long walk up our driveway with a badly broken ankle. In 2006 Lou went to live on green grass with a foster family. He returned in the winter, as the family did not want their pasture ruined.

Back and forth Lou would go. Spring and summer with his foster parents, and when the rains began Lou would once again make the long walk up our driveway. Except this year. His foster parents love Lou so much, they took out a loan and built him his own barn. Another adoption in the books.

The same with Purple Passion. The foster mom said no way are you ever getting her back. Passion is married to an Arabian gelding who this year turns 30. It should be classified a felony if we break those two up.

Other recent adoptions include Brandon, and while on his way to Reno, Brandon witnessed a 10 car fender bender. The stories these horses can tell.

We have blue skies, hot coffee from Peets, and Billy Joel on the oldies station. We also have mud up to my giant nose. Enjoy your thank goodness January is going away Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses. Very much looking forward to the first fly. Cannot wait...

    Joe

    RIP KINSELLA,

    Kinsella Euthanized After Workout
    By Blood-Horse Staff

    Posted: Tuesday, January 26, 2010 11:36 AM

Kinsella, who sold for a sale-topping $2.2 million at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale, was euthanized Jan. 25 after breaking down following a workout over Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride surface. The 4-year-old son of Mr. Greeley raced for Team Valor International.

“We breezed him, and he finished the work right at the finish line,” said Team Valor’s Barry Irwin. “The injury to his front leg started at the cannon bone and went right through the sesamoids. They were shattered, and we put him down right there.”

Kinsella had been scheduled to run in a mile turf race at Santa Anita Jan. 23. The race was moved to the main track because of heavy rains that had saturated the area, and Irwin scratched Kinsella.

“We were afraid to run him on the main track because of the track conditions, so we waited until the track was OK for him to work in preparation for a race this Saturday (Jan. 30),” Irwin said. “It was just horrible what happened.

“I sent him out because he had trained great at Keeneland on the Polytrack and on the all-weather track at GoldMark Farm in Florida.”

Kinsella was North America’s fifth-highest-priced yearling of 2007. Team Valor purchased him at the Saratoga yearling sale from Gainesway, agent.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Kinsella won two of five starts and earned $65,505. He won at Gulfstream Park and at Saratoga and ran third in the Bryan Station Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland in the fall. In his last start, he ran unplaced in the Dec. 26 Malibu Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita.

Bred in Kentucky by Liberation Farm and Oratis, Kinsella was produced from the Kings of Kings mare Win My Heart, who is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Secret Liaison.
    ................................................

Another beautiful one, gone too soon.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I hope that if you've not already done so, that you'll post some photos from your trip to Capitol Hill yesterday. Perhaps the President may be more amenable to filing an Executive Order to stop what has been occurring under the aegis of the Bureau of Land Management.

Deb A., happy to help spread the word about UPENN's Laminitis Research Fund. I am ashamed to say that I was in the dark about this ghastly equine inflammatory disease before Barbaro. Doubly ashamed to say that I didn't know the disease had claimed the life of the beautiful Secretariat, whom I saw (as best one can from the infield anyway!) win the KY Derby.

I am "knackered" to use Alex's term and have to be up earlier than usual in the morning. So please, everyone, have "ACN" and please light a candle for Barbaro, as our Debbie LA has asked us to do. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Carleen: By what date do faxes need to be sent to Judge Cenesia?
To Linda in NW FLA, I agree with your reflections on the love of our animals who have passed. I heard the song "Ants Marching" this AM and immediately thought of my late, sweet little black & white Husky, Andrei. He died too, too young from Addison's Disease. That dog loved that song.
To Liz in the UK: I promise to send you an e-mail this weekend, lovely hearing from you. ####

####Robyn...Your late great Husky Andrei sounds like a wonderful companion. Also..(smiles)..he had great taste in music...love that song.

Still think of my Husky Sage and how much I miss her. She's been gone many years but there's never lived a happier-go-lucky dog...my Sage.

Hiya, FsOB! Well, I am still looking out on a black, not yet midnight blue sky, here on the banks of the Thames. May everyone have a super Weds., safe & productive. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Tamme, your Husky Sage sounds like a great four-legged friend! Andrei was the affable great-grandson of my beloved first Husky, Natasha. She came into my life on 03/17/1978 and lived to be almost 16-1/2 years old. I am just crazy about this zany breed of dogs.
To Lynne B.: Thanks for the update about the sentencing of Skye's murderer. I'll send the judge an e-mail this weekend. As the survivor of a violent crime, I have empassioned feelings about the "slippery slope" of violence against animals. So many who heinously mistreat or kill animals progress to similar acts against humans.
To Margie in NM: Are you snowed in? I've missed seeing you over the past week, Margie. ####

    Robyn,
If you read down a little further to Lynn's information, I believe the sentencing will take place next. Lynn also gave the advanced search of #44967 on ABR to read more info on the case.

I'm sorry that as I re-read my info, I mis-spelled Judge Ceresia's first name, it's Andrew, not Andre. Sorry about that.

Please let Judge Ceresia know how you feel about this terrible crime and that the Lohnes person who did this should be put away for a very long time.

Again, prayers and wishes for justice go out to Dawn and all those who have lost pets or loved ones from sick people like this Lohnes person.

    Ever onward,

*********** DOWN TO THE WIRE *************

State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348 Phone number: 610-444-6040 or online at www.kennettflorist.net

    Good Morning, ABR Family:)

Alex...Thanks for posting the pic of *CORKY* & *CALI* :) They look a bit like they might be saying, "can we pls get down now?" but they are very cute and they're all bundled up in their wintertime coats, too:)

Here is Judge Ceresaria's email address again, for anyone who might want to send a letter along on behalf of *SKYE* and her owner, the judge will be sentencing the perp on 2/04...that is just one week from today.

    aceresia@courts.ny.state.gov

I got an email alert from KCRA TV - Sacramento this morning warning of heavy fog in the Motherlode Foothills...but thankfully, it's not present here this morning...blue skies and sunshine albeit a bit on the 'chillsey' side..but a nice change from the ten straight days of clouds/rain/wind...not that I am complaining, mind you...WE NEED MORE RAIN/SNOW here!

Good News to report on the status of the fundraiser for Save Haven Horse Rescue's Flu Vaccines....THEY HAVE MANAGED TO COLLECT ENOUGH MONIES....*THANKS MOSTLY TO YOU...FOBs* to be able to vaccinate all the horses there! YIPPPPEEEE SKIPPPYYYYY!

If you'd like to see photos of the local news media folks there at the Ranch yesterday, go to the Thread on DB...Advanced Search#:44848.97 GREAT PICS there! The woman from local Channel 7 had a BLAST playing with the kidddds....even *SAMMY* a dwarf mix cow! If you read down, there is a little story of how he came to live at Safe Haven and some of his duties there along with a few LOL stories:)

Thank You to ALL who helped in this effort to get the horses the intra-nasal vaccines...they've all had their necessary vaccinations, but the outbreak in Red Bluff/Cottonwood is just rampant and their Vet suggested a 'booster' would protect them even more. UC Davis has also requested smears from infected horses be sent to them, so they can identify just which strain is present there. Thusfar, in just over one week, 80 horses have become infected and three have died....so thanks again for helping *SAFE HAVEN* help their horses. Helping of the horses is what our *BARBARO* asked us to do...so I betcha he's bein' a HAPPY BOY in Heaven knowing we've done our jobs here! Wheeeeee!

Hope everyone has a 'dine&fandy' day today!

    Lentenor maded John List

Meantime, the bandwagon is forming for Lentenor, the full brother to '06 Derby winner Barbaro. Lentenor looked the real deal breaking his maiden on the Gulf turf by 3 1/2 lengths last week for Mike Matz.

It's a little early to be looking for Derby story lines, but Lentenor may be at the top of the list.

    Sandra,
I hope you get some better weather soon. We saw sunlight in San Jose today for the 1st time in several days. Hurts the eyes at first.

Yes, are furbabies train us well. Skit, he is a large black sweetheart that sits almost on my head at 5:45 am every morning meowing. First softly, then if I don't jump out of bed to head downstairs to feed the gang, he just keeps getting louder and louder. Of course we now have four kiddens and Bud, our black lab. He just wants to go outside (he won't go by himself) for his potty run, then he eats.

I know Chief was watching you get his drops and thinking "mom I don't need them right now".

Funny how we start living in tune to thier needs and wants...just like having small kids all over again....

Stay warm, and keep those flashlights handy if you lose your power.

    Take care dear lady.

####Sandra...I think that weather is headed our way here in Littel Rock. Starting tonight it will get serious. If it does as they expect we'll have freezing rain/sleet for several hours then snow. Oh joy...I hate ice.

I went to the book store today and loaded up with a couple of books/magazine. Then bought groceries and of course cat food and lots of bottled water. I just hope we don't lose electricity. I'll have on my red blob and be huddled under not one but two down comforters...lol. I think it may just be a three cat night. But might as well make the best of it!

Goodness...I just realized tomorrow is the 29th. I think I had blocked that out. Never forget hearing on NPR the word "euthanized this morning"...that was all I heard as I got into my car to go to an appt. But I knew...and balled all the way to my appt and then was in tears (and I don't usually cry in public) telling my doctor about it. The nicest part was she understood. My doc was an animal person who 'got it.' Sad memory however SO much good has come in the years that have followed Barbaro's time here.

So just in case I'm without power tomorrow I wanted to post in celebration of Barbaro and tell you all how happy I am that he led me to this "famblee."

I'm off to light some candles for the Big Bay One....

Statistics of animal cruelty versus human violence
    ##################################################
It is often said that violence begets violence. Data tends to prove that people who perform acts of cruelty to animals, have a tendency to commit acts of violence against people.

In fact, the Federal Bureau of Investigations has recognized the animal cruelty-human violence link since the 1970s as its analysis of serial killers (e.g., Jeffrey Dhamer; Ted Bundy; David Berkowitz; Albert Disalvo, aka the Boston Strangler; Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine high school shooters; etc.) showed that most had tortured and/or killed animals before moving on to people. A review of the data shows that:

    * The largest single survey to date of serial killers found:

o 36% admitted to committing animal cruelty as children
o 46% admitted to committing animal cruelty as adolescents
o 36% admitted to committing animal cruelty as adults

    * A 1997 study by the North Eastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA showed that animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people than non-animal abusers.
    * The same study showed animal abusers are four times more likely to commit property crimes than non-animal abusers.
    * Up to 75% of victims of domestic violence had their partner threaten or kill a family pet.
    * A survey of the 50 largest shelters for battered women found that 85% of women and 63% of children in the shelters discussed incidents of pet abuse in the family.
    * 32% of victims of domestic abuse who were also pet owners, reported that their child had hurt or killed a pet.
    * A recent study of 9 school shootings reported that 5 out of the 11 perpetrators had histories of alleged animal abuse.
    * A Canadian Police study found that 70% of people arrested for animal cruelty had past records of other violent crimes, including homicide.
    * Of 332 animal cruelty arrests studied by the Chicago Police Department,
o 70% of suspects had arrests on felony charges (including two homicides)
o 86% of suspects had multiple arrests
o 70% of suspects had narcotics charges (68% of which were for sales or trafficking)
o 65% of suspects had been charged with battery-related violent offenses
o 27% of suspects had previous firearms charges
o 13% of suspects had been arrested on sex crime charges
o 59% of suspects were alleged gang members
    * A Massachusetts study of 153 animal abusers found that within 10 years of their arrest, 70% were charged with other crimes:
o 38% were charged with violent crimes
o 44% percent were charged with property crimes
o 37% percent were charged with drug offenses
o 37% percent were charged with disorderly offenses

Dear Frens, Here is a sweet little gift, to take into your dreams tonight.

Late at night (early AM), on Jan 28/20 2006, as we all prayed so hard ...(HUNDREDS of us showed up)...this post from Lauri H was my only comfort. I am sure that it had the same effect on so many more than just myself.

I held onto the words, as my tears streamed onto my pillow. I held onto them, until dark, silent sleep finally came. I think it was as though we already knew...it was as though that sweet spirit with whom we had become so in-tuned, was telling us, it was time to go.

    Here is Laurie's post:

    ..................................................

    Hello Barbaro,

How are you doing Honey? I know it’s been very trying these past few days but we are here Honey. We’re not going anywhere.

This weekend I was on this site waiting for updates and reading through the posts. There was such an outpouring of love and protection for you. A rush of true emotions that often had me in tears. It was beautiful…

Do you remember in the past when your Fans had been dealing with cold and dangerous weather and a few of them came to you to borrow a blanket? Remember Honey? And the time you arranged for blankets for their Little Ones who needed to feel a little extra comfort, warmth and love?

Barbaro, you and I will grab your favorite fuzzy blanket tonight and pull it high on your neck to keep the chill away.

But Honey, this weekend and into tonight, your Fans have come to you with blankets of their own… ALL from deep inside their heart.

There are smaller, softer blankets that are perfect to wrap your legs; larger, warmer blankets perfect for snuggling, and medium blankets to lay your head upon. They bring handmade blankets, quilts and throws. Cotton, acrylic, cashmere and fleece...

Honey, the colors, ohh, the colors! They are nothing short of sensational and stunning! Much like a beautiful garden bursting in full bloom… Every imaginable color!

Barbaro, you will feel comfort and warmth tonight. All of your blankets are with you. Beside you, a blanket! Under you, to cradle you while you dream your sweet dreams. Some, we’ll cover you with so you can nuzzle during the night. Your stall is full of blankets!! Layers upon layers, wall to wall…

You are well protected and loved so much Honey.

While you sleep, let the healing take hold and continue, and tomorrow strength will carry you through your day.

Please close your eyes Honey. You will see all of your loved ones in your sweet dreams... Sleep well Barbaro. Be comfortable. You know I love you so much...Good night. XXOOxxo

Hello Gang. I haven't posted much lately, but I am always here.

    ### Robyn and Bobbie B. - Trip the Saluki is still with us. We are still trying to find the right home for him. In the meantime..........last Sunday I had him in the office with me.(We bring him into the office every day for a change of pace.) On Sunday he decided to destroy the office while I was out in the kennels. It all cleaned up and no one was told of the fracas. We also have a 10 month old Great Pyrenees with us while he hopefully recovers from a broken leg. Teddy was purposefully run over by some mental defective in a pick up truck. It is touch and go, but we pray hard for him and he gets plenty of hugs and kisses. The New Mexico Attorney General is prosecuting the dirt ball that did this. Teddy's sister Amy escaped the incident without harm. It happened a month ago.

We keep going. 'They' will never stop needing all of us.

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, in reading today's entries it finally hit me that tomorrow is the 29th.... My thanks to Otherlyn for posting Laurie H's tuck-in from 01/29/2007. Those words were a comfort again tonight. I've lit more candles this evening....

Alex, thanks for the pictures of Corky & Cali. What adorable dogs! Do they actually mingle with the horses?

What a wild "read", today's Pawlick Report. It appears that a certain someone should consider a remedial spelling class, ha! Ha!

Wishing everyone "ACN" and please know that you'll all be in my heart tomorrow especially. Alex, thanks again for your unstinting dedication to Barbaro's memory and to the well-being of North American horses and jockeys. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Margie in NM: Great seeing you here. Poor Trip, freaking out in the office like that. Please, if you might, can you provide us with any more details about Teddy the Great Pyrenees? Would it help if those of us outside NM might send letters of support to the State's Attorney General, so that the 'perp' is prosecuted and sentenced to the max?
To Jonna: What a chilling list of statistics re. the impacts of humans to killing or maiming animals. These facts seem so poorly understood in the American system of justice, sad to say.
To Tamme: Hiya, buddy! Hoping your electricity doesn't go out tonight. Our winds are gail force tonight and ripping off the river, hitting the bay windows that front our home office. Nonetheless, Ms. Nikita is snoozing on the sofa! May the "red blob" keep you cozy tonight.
To Lou Ann: I've missed you here, sorry to read that your computer has been on the fritz.
To Sandra: How heartfelt, your awakening to administer Chief's drops. As Carleen said, your Chief was well-loved. How fortunate that he found you on that fateful night in the cold, many years ago.
To Debbie LA: Thanks for the blue-link showing Lentenor is making the lists of possible KY Derby contenders. Very exciting to ponder, isn't it?
To Carleen: Thanks for the additional details re. the judge who will mete out justice to Skye's murderer. I'll make use of the info this weekend. ####

    ###
Good night Fren Robyn Hoffman, and Frens ALL.

Robyn, Thank YOU , for all of your thoughtful, considerate posts....and (um) for mentioning the correct date of Fren Laurie H's post...I always do that. I always call that night "2006," perhaps subliminally not wanting that 'better year' to end. (sigh)

It might be nice to visit BARBARO's candle site, and post something from your hearts in his memory. It may sound "fantastic," but it is a FACT that on this night, in 2007, a mere 3 years ago, there were over 20,500 burning with bright hopeful wishes for his recovery.

Sleep well, everyone. Please, especially tonight of all nights, intercede for KIP DE VILLE. He is reportedly doing better, but he is not yet out of danger.

Where there is life, there is hope.

With the dawn, comes the sad anniversary. Lets hope that the morning light will warm many hearts to return to the welcoming embrace of this famblee. They were once here, pledging unending devotion. Perhaps, as they remember, a spark of hope may reignite their fervour. We still have work to do.

    Sweet dreams.

    BARBARO, I Love You.

    Your FOB Fren, O

Another year has passed...Barbaro, I still think of you everyday and remember your sublime performance both on and off the track. Your famblee is honoring you with great deeds everyday in your honor and spirit.

    I Believe..

    See you at the Bridge..

Hiya, FsOB! Can it be that three years have gone by since Barbaro's passing? I have learned so much about horses and made a number of new, unforgettable friends (most of whom I have never had the pleasure of meeting face-to-face) since that fateful day in May of 2006. Here's to the undefeated Barbaro, our Sublime Bay One!

Reaching out to all of you, to the Jacksons, to Edgar Prado, to Eduardo (I apologize that I can't recall his last name), to Michael Matz, the spirits of Sherry & CJ, and the teams at Fair Hill Farm and New Bolton Centre today. And yes, now I'll say "TGIF". Alex, Wendy, Mary, & Amy, thank you for all you do to maintain this site each day. Peace, Robyn

    In loivng memory of Barbaro.

    4/29/02 - 1/29/07

When I think of Barbaro, I not only think of a gorgeous racehorse that I couldn't keep my eyes off. But I also think of all the horses that have been helped or saved through this unbelievable FOB network. There have been great racehorses in history and there will be great ones to come, probably even a Triple Crown winner. We have and will love them all. But none of them will have the legacy that Barbaro has. It is our tribute to him.

Rest in peace, big boss horse. ACN, Barbaro

While the world watched another living soul being pulled from the Haitian rubble, a bomb go off in Iraq and a U.S. President hit the reset button; the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) wild horse contractors, the Cattoors, were quietly shoving a cattle prod into your First Amendment rights and attempting a backdoor effort to quell the voice of Wild Horse advocates around the world.

Be it a Blog, Non-Profit, Publication or private citizen, letters from the Cattoor’s attorneys were being delivered in an effort to stifle the truth about what really goes on in one of their “humane” wild horse round-ups. Reading the truth is even more than they can bear.

American citizens should be appalled at the fact that a Federal contractor cannot stand up to being transparent and would turn and bite the very hand that feeds them simply because the truth “hurt” Sue Cattoor’s feelings. You have the right to be enraged as it is your money that made these people multi-millionaires. It’s your money that bought the very helicopters that rain trauma and even death down upon our wild horses and it is your money that you never approved to be spent in this manner yet the very recipients have the audacity to trample on the right of free press and subvert our very Constitution.

Some of the assailed have folded, others will fight back but overall it has sent a ripple of disdain across the free world that is bound to come back and sit squarely on heads of the Cattoor contractors and the rouge Federal agency, BLM, that hired them.

Perhaps the reason that this rankles me the most is that I had to, personally, put up with the shenanigans and idiosyncrasies of Sue Cattoor and company during the entire botched Pryor Mountain round-up. It’s one thing to be treated like a criminal by the BLM while on our federal land but add to that the continued inane mumbling and commentary of a contractor’s wife while watching the horror and emotionally depleting experience of a BLM round-up is more than most sane people could withstand.

But there we were, with Sue Cattoor buzzing rumors, misinformation and junk science in our ears as we attempted to document the event for what it was; a total, inhumane and unjustified act of animal cruelty.

On the last day of the round-up during the morning meeting, we were not allowed to ask any questions unless they were “operations” oriented. BLM field agent Jim Sparks would walk all over and discredit anyone who would ask a question regarding the horse’s welfare but not when it came to the babble, in my opinion, that fell from the lips of Sue Cattoor. That last day she launched off into a speech on how we handful of advocates had hurt her feelings on our blogs and websites by bringing up the past sins of her husband and that all wild horses should be cleared from the ranges and those that could not be adopted should be destroyed. No one commented, not even the BLM officials, as it was just too bizarre.

On that last day the BLM was to release the horses that they were not going to auction and the likes of Ginger Kathrens, Makendra Silverman, Ben Sussman, Carol Walker, Elyse Gardner, Pam and Tom Nicholes and Terry and myself set up on a bluff, overlooking the area where the horses would be released, and waited to celebrate a few moments of triumph that at least there were a few horses that would be returned to the wild. But do you think that Sue Cattoor could give us any peace? No.

This Federal contractor stood behind us and commented on every single word we said and rained on every good moment we were trying to experience. We were under “guard” by two BLM security individuals and when I begged one to intervene and stop the onslaught of verbal gunshots he turned walked away and when I approached “Chuck” the other agent he simply stared at me.

I asked if he was going to respond and render aide and after thinking about it for a while, he replied:

“I don’t want to trample on her right of free speech.”

Whose rights are being trampled on now?

Since when can a Federal contractor turn on the U.S. press and threaten suit simply because they print the truth? Where do they feel that they have the right to attempt to intimidate those who work with fact versus fiction? This transgression, alone, constitutes the need for a Congressional inquiry notwithstanding the fact that they have killed 22 horses, to date, during this contested and unnecessary round-up. Those 22 horses would be alive, today, if not for the dysfunctional BLM and their “humane” contractors, the Cattoors.

The Cattoors and their legal team need a remedial course in the true definition of the First Amendment and we as citizens need to ensure that the likes of the Cattoors do not acquire anymore of our hard earned tax dollars.

    Enough is enough.

We are burying our volunteer Nancy this frigid morning...dear God -10 in the windchill. -5 or so anyway. It is just evil cold.

I personally hate internment of the remains in the earth...not exactly dust to dust is it?

So I will try not to be chewing on my coat sleeve. I have no idea what I will be wearing...and yesterday, while i looked through my favorite rescue mission for something long and warm, I heard Nancy saying to me: WHAT ARE YOU DOING, GIRL? go HOME....AND LAY DOWN.

What a loss...what a loss to all of us who loved her or even just knew her.

What a wonderful spirit for life Barbaro had. I believe that spirit goes on through all of us here.

I know it's a hard day for us today, but get through it we will. I just think of the sparkle in Barbaro's eye and Mrs. Jackson saying that Barbaro was not ready to give in to laminitis in July of 2006. He wanted to keep on living. He will keep on living in spirit and through us.

Thanks to Alex for starting this blog!

Today, I celebrate Barbaro, his magnificence, his breathtaking beauty, his courage, but most of all I celebrate him because of all that has been accomplished in his name since January 29, 2007. His spirit is still with us, inspiring us to do what we can for the good of all horses, whether it is anti slaughter or rescue efforts, fighting cruelty and abuse or contributing to laminitis research. Barbaro has changed my life in many ways, all for the better, and has brought me close to people I never would have known, but who are now my dearest friends. And so today, I think of Barbaro with joy, with love, and with thankfulness for the privilege of having shared part of his remarkable journey. He will live in our heart forever.

January 29, 2007. Another day we'll remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we heard the terrible news that Barbaro was euthanized. We wanted so much for him to survive, it seemed for so long that he would, and the news was so incomprehensible. How we grieved. Still do. Yet we've pledged that we will remember him and honor and celebrate his life and bravery and incredible accomplishments by working to abolish slaughter. To save horses who need homes or sanctuary. To make tracks safer. To abolish drugs used to enhance performance. To ensure retired horses receive life-long care and comfort. To limit breeding only to improve and perpetuate breeds, not just mass-produce in the hope quantity will make for some quality. To eradicate laminitis. To support and embrace the wild horses and improve the environment for the wild horses, mostly by just letting them be wild. That horses are sentient beings who are to be respected, cared for, and to be allowed to share our existence as partners, rather than be regarded as chattel. To educate those who have never had the remarkable experience of sharing existence with horses, how enriching that is, and how that existence is improved by the presence of horses.

We've seen the establishment of wonderful rescues, and been reintroduced to many that quietly went about the task of rescuing rehabilitating, and rehoming for years struggle and work tirelessly to counter the increase in numbers of horses in need. We've seen the establishment of an amazing grassroots organization that will not be dissuaded by the political machine of DC, or the nefarious business practices of kill buyers at auctions. A community grew to thousands worldwide, having as many differences in ideals, opinions and experiences as there are horse breeds and colors and conformation, who was drawn together by one horse. All this because of one horse.

The years may have tempered the grief and the tears somewhat, but where we were three years ago will never be forgotten, and Barbaro will never be forgotten. Thank you Alex, Tim, Penny, the Jacksons, Michael, Peter, all those who brought Barbaro into our lives and all those at UPenn and Rood and Riddle who tried so hard to save him.

    See you in hevvin, BBH

Barbaro had undergone a "last-ditch, pull-out-all-the stops" procedure the day before, and my recollection of Sunday is that there wasn't much news from New Bolton...and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up with a growing sense of foreboding...

Someone who had posted regularly here (although perhaps not as frequently as some of us) and had communicated with me by email had left this good place many weeks before ~ finally driven off by one too many nasty attacks by someone who is also long-gone...

But on that Sunday, as the day progressed and my sense of impending doom deepened, I thought so often of J---- that I finally emailed her, not knowing if she was even following the events at New Bolton as provided to us. I begged her to come back her to "post for Barbaro" - unaware that she hadn't been reading for a week and was ignorant of the sad state of affairs that seemed to be unfolding...

J---- had been deeply wounded here, and yet she was so very grateful for my message...and I was so very thrilled to see HER post here on the 28th...LOVE CONQUERS ALL!

I have nothing particularly profound to say on this sad anniversary; rather, my message is quite simple: I fell madly in love the first time I laid eyes on Barbaro (in the Kentucky Derby post parade) and that love only grew stronger with the passage of time...and LOVE NEVER DIES!!!!!!!

I scarcely remember "life before Barbaro" but I do know that I wouldn't have that life back for all the money in the world...yes, there was far less pain, and far fewer tears, but there was also far less LIFE!

And so, through my tears, I want to express my gratitude for the fact that Barbaro DID walk this earth, he DID and still DOES teach me so much that I never knew I needed to know, and he is forever in my heart!

IN LOVING MEMORY OF BARBARO JACKSON, BIG BOSS HORSE AND CHAMPION OF MY HEART April 29, 2003 ~ January 29, 2007...

Dearest Barbaro, always loved and never forgotten.

Thank you for still giving us a home Alex! Over 2,000 members on ABR Facebook!

Thank you again Harriette for your beautiful story you wrote for us 3 years ago today. It was so comforting picturing Barbaro waking up in a field of buttercups and ending with him tucking in Laurie H.

Glenda Jo!!!! So good to see you here too!! My email is mg4alex@earthlink.net Would love to hear from you! :-)

    Hello Barbaro,

I have to tell you, I took the day off from work today. I know to some others, it's "So what?" but you know 'why' I needed the day away, don't you Honey?

This was such a day of reflection and appreciation. Happiness and scattered moments of sadness. But Honey, the sadness was completely FOR me, not AT you.

I miss knowing you're here. I miss logging on to receive Updates, not rereading what was. I miss YOU and so many things 'you'. See Honey? For me...

Today they were talking all day on the radio about how glorious the moon will be tonight! And, I would smile.

As I lay in bed last night, the moon was shining so brightly into my window that Emma's white rough seemed to glow. I would reach over and run my fingers through the white softness and listen to her gently breathing. Oh, to be such a lucky Mommy...

The fur would gently fall back into place with just a slight extra fluff as it settled for the night.

Thank you for turning up the lights last night Honey. As I watched the puffs of white settle ever-so-softly back down, much like a feather of down swinging back and forth as it's caught up in a slight breeze, a feeling of peace and comfort came over me.

Honey, as you cuddle up at night, and you start to lie down, you gently and ever-so-softly gather your legs beneath you and lower yourself to Heavenly comfort. The air surrounding you is a mist of beautiful and ultimately moving array of colors...like no other here on Earth.

Your blankets forever near you, they soon form a loving source of warmth and a forever sense of Love. Yes Honey, because they're from all of your loved ones and Fans.

Today, tonight, forever...we're here. For you Honey. Because of you Honey.

Your Dream Angels are waiting to see they're favorite color in the mist. (And the most mischievous one is playing in the mist!) Honey, I think he wants a water fight! Okay Honey. You hold him off until tomorrow because after all, Saturday is your bath day! You LOVE your baths!!

Let's pull your blanket high on your neck because even though the lights are on, it's still very cold. We'll fluff it perfectly for nuzzling and let's give ALL of our other loved ones more than just a bit of blanket, okay Honey?!

Honey, please give CJ and Sherry some extra love, okay? We miss them so...

Good night Honey. Dream only sweet dreams. Your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you into the sweet dreams of your loved ones.

I love you Barbaro. I have learned so much from your recovery attempt and ALL of the people within your connections and your famblee. I will always check in as long as this site is here. I will always love and remember you as long as I breath air AND Heavenly mist!

    Good night Honey. xxoo...x

Remembering Barbaro and the "Summer of 2006," as my family refers to it. I am thankful that I could be a part of it. I am thankful for all the friends I have made. I am still saddened when I think of how it all ended, and yet it was just a beginning.

So good to see some old friends here today.

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, the tears are flowing, seeing not only our usual longtime posters but those who have been away for awhile: Harriette, Laurie H., Mercy, Cheryl J., Jennie in KY, Ruth S., Susan E., Glenda J., Amy in NJ, Rose, Joanne, & Lyn L.! Welcome back, Friends.

We all have a destiny and Barbaro had his own, although perhaps not the one that any of us could have anticipated on the day of the 132nd Kentucky Derby. The Big Bay One continues to have an impact on the world, helping to stimulate contributions to UPENN's Laminitis Research Fund, volunteerism for horses in shelters, enhanced safety for TBs and their riders, and legislative advocacy on behalf of the abolition of horse slaughter in North America. I wonder whether those who assisted with La Ville Rouge's foaling in 2003 could have ever foreseen any of this?

Alex, Wendy, Mary, & Amy - thank you for maintaining this site as a force for good works & a tribute to Barbaro's memory! My thoughts go out to Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, who elected to share every step of their beloved horse's progress as he fought to heal from his injuries in the 2006 Preakness. May the spirit of Barbaro, CJ, and Sherry, as well as tonight's bright full moon, continue to enlighten our world. Peace, Robyn

Because of Barbaro I am now a horse racing follower, horse owner, daily reader of this site and of TB Friends, a donor of New Bolton's laminitis fund and an advocate for the well being of horses. Barbaro captured my heart and soul and his memory will remain with me until I one day meet him in heaven.

For me today is a reminder of how many lives Barbaro has changed. From all the wonderful friends to all the horses, dogs, cats and other animals saved.

Seeing Lentenor last week at Gulfstream was very emotional, he looks so much like Barbaro and we all miss him so much.

I am posting late because today I was at Palm Beach Downs saving 2 thoroughbreds and coordinating the arrival of another 15 the past 2 weeks into our program, horses that are too slow and would have most likely been slaughtered. Today, January 29, the policy at Calder and Gulfstream was printed in big letters in the overnights and condition book - any trainer whose horse is abandoned, neglected or sold for slaughter will be lose his stalls and be banned. I consider this the ultimate honor for Barbaro.

We love you Barbaro and will continue to fight for your brothers and sisters.

    Good evening, fellow Fans.

For some reason, I am feeling Barbaro's absence more this year than the past two. Maybe it's all the turmoil in my life the past year or maybe it's the general turmoil in the world. Or maybe it's the prospect of seeing both Nicanor and Lentenor race that makes me yearn for what might have been.

Anyway, I am here reading every day, just haven't had much to share of late.

For Barbaro...Thank you for the magnificence of your physical athletism, for your Kentucky Derby win that was the most thrilling I've ever watched, thank you for bringing me back to the sport of horse racing.

I had wandered away and you lit that fire under me again...just like back when I was a 12 yr old girl my mom and I sat down one Saturday afternoon to watch TV and the Kentucky Derby was on (my first derby ever) and wouldn't you know the first horse I saw (and fell for)that day was Secretariat and we all know what followed that. Perfection. Then when I saw you that spring I was hit with that same lightning bolt. Thank you Barbaro for that and for giving me reason to reflect back on my mom and I huddled by the TV watching many a race on Saturday afternoons. Wonderful memories.

But most of all...thank you for being the inspiration that you are. For being the catalyst that moved me and so many others to be involved in horse welfare and the antislaughter movement.

What a legacy you left us Big Guy...Thank you.

    JOE FROM YESTERDAY: i think
    **************************************************
    Friday, January 29th...

    (but feels like January 326th)

Cathy and I bought this ranch in 1997, and this has been the worst, the darkest, the longest, the yuckiest, the lost two chapsticks in deep mud winter we have ever experienced. Dogs track mud to our couch, and it has gotten to the point we no longer care. Whatever. Too tired to wipe their paws. Popcorn with way too much butter, enjoyed on a filthy couch. Martha Stewart would be aghast. Always liked that word. Aghast. Been waiting for a chance to use it.

Horses continue to be in trouble. Several Northern California rescue ranches having difficult times.

We also accepted a gelding adopted from us last year. He returns in horrible condition. Here is better description... the gelding was almost dead.

We have a tempermental dial up internet. We also have flooded paddocks, fallen tree limbs, and our little Weber barbecue ended up in another county. A winter to remember, but who would want to?

And then there are the neglected horses from other rescue ranches. The death toll is now at 7. Hardly a lucky number.

The survivors continue to show improvement. I am certain they will recover.

They say more rain on the way. Enjoy your Alexandra loves Mr. Ed like crazy Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. I will continue to update this website as often as possible. Thank you.

KUDOS to the heroic rescue workers who saved a horse in NW CT yesterday - the horse had fallen into a well, and the temperatures were in the single digits! Blessedly the horse suffered only minor injuries, and hopefully the rescue workers had buckets of hot coffee to keep them warm.

Of course I do have to question why the horse was in an area where there was the potential for him/her to fall into a well in the first place...

Such a good ending to the horrible horse in the well story ! I'm so glad that they were able to get the horse out safely .

I'm in snowy NC , with about 4 inches of snow , it's lovely -- don't see this often !
But we are to have sleet , ice , and 9 degrees
tonight and that's not so lovely ! It's terrible to think of the animals that will be out in this tonight and tomorrow . These animals are not equipped with coats to withstand this kind of cold, if it comes as the weather stations are predicting.

Margie in NM , thinking of Trip and wishing the best for him.

    (( JONNA and TUCK ))

Debbie LA , thank you for all the blue links you do for us. When I see something that needs to be linked for us , I think 'I hope Debbie sees that', and you always do ! I am so grateful.

I went back and watched all of Barbaro's races, and he was as great as a horse can be. It is bittersweet to see him running , doing what only he can do so well, muscles rippling , and pulling at the reins . Paradise lost.

Wherever you are today , snow or sun , I hope you have a good day . So many hearts were opened here yesterday , and such love displayed , it was a
tsunami of love. I feel covered with it, as I hope all of you do. We are blessed. Bye now,

THE DEATH OF THE CALICO COLT

He was wild and free, roaming the vast expanses of the rugged Calico Mountains with his mother and father and the other members of his family. This would be his first winter, a time when life slowed down for all the wild oneshe elegant pronghorn he watched on the distant horizon, the tiny pygmy rabbits that foraged in the sage brush undergrowth and darted into their dens when he tried to touch them, the fat sage grouse that were some of his favorites.
When he was just days old, he heard their strange, booming sounds and saw the males strutting and displaying for a mate. When he wandered toward them, it was his father who gently guided him home. His mother softly nickered to him. She smelled of sweet sage and invited him to nurse.
Then, one day while his mother and father and the others in his family were quietly foraging, conserving their energy in the growing cold, he saw his father jerk his head up. Ears forward, the stallion watched and listened and the colt did too, mimicking his father. The colt could hear a rumbling drone. In the distance, he could see something flying toward them. It was even bigger than the majestic golden eagles that soared over his home. It came closer and closer, dropping low over the sage. The drone grew into an ear shattering roar. His family began to run and he followed, galloping beside his mother where he would be safe. Mile after mile the menacing, giant bird chased them. His legs ached and he wanted to rest, but he could not leave his mother. He kept running, struggling to keep up. Fear gripped the Calico colt.
Then he saw a horse in front of his father and it too began to run. Safety must be ahead. His family followed the stranger and suddenly they were trapped inside walls of steel. His father tried to jump over the wall but it was too high. There were two legged animals running at them with long sticks and something white that fluttered madly. Suddenly, he was separated from his mother when a two-legged moved between them, striking out at him with the frightening stick and the fluttering bag. He was driven into another corral. When he whinnied for his mother, she answered. He raced around the corral calling for her, but found his feet were too sore to run anymore and he stopped. He could hear his father calling and he knew the proud stallion had been separated too. The colt answered him. He could see his mother through the bars of his cage and this gave him strength and hope.
Days passed. It was cold and there was no place to get out of the wind. In his home, his mother would have led the band below a rocky outcrop that blocked the wind. The colt began to fear he would never again smell the sweet sage of her breath or taste the warm milk she offered to him. His feet, so sore, became worse. Shooting pains darted through his whole body when he tried to walk so he moved as little as possible, hobbling a few steps to eat the plants the two-leggeds had thrown on the ground for them. One frigid morning, the two leggeds came and drove him into a truck with others that were his age. The pain was constant now and when the truck moved out, he stayed on his feet but the pain riveted him with every jolt and bump. He called for his mother, but there was no answer. Would he ever see his parents again? Hours passed and the truck moved onto smoother ground and it turned into a place where he could hear the calls of his kind. He whinnied as loud as he could, but the answering voices were unfamiliar. The two-leggeds drove the colt from the truck into a bigger cage and he struggled to keep up with the other foals. Some of them were limping too. His eyes scanned the horizon, looking for something familiar but the flat horizon looked nothing like the land of his birth.
Days went by and he spent hours laying in the dirt, the pain growing. He could feel something happening to his feet. His once strong, dark hooves were beginning to separate from the bone designed to hold them fast. He laid flat and closed his eyes, imagining the home and family he feared he would never see again. The two leggeds walked toward him. He wanted to jump up and dash away but he could not. Over the next few days he grew too tired to move at all. The wind howled and as it began to snow, he closed his eyes for the last time and dreamed of his family. Then two leggeds came again and killed the Calico Colt.
In death, the lively spirit of the Calico Colt was released to roam free once more. He has
returned home to his family and the land of his dreams. He is not just a statistic. Neither

    on the db....wild horse vigil....

posted something about this last night last night under vigils and received no response.

I hate to be a bother but the horses really need our help.

So after reading about Little Courage (the foal who's feet were run off--courtesy of the BLM)--and that's what I've named him...and being sick all week about it, I decided to take some action.

This Tues night from 5 to 7 pm West Coast Time there will be a vigil. This is not only to honor Little Courage but to honor all our horses who are in desperate straights because no one in Wash will listen.

You don't have to do this vigil for the whole two hours. I chose a big block of time so that people could come and go as their circumstances require. I wanted those who got in late from work to feel like they could still be a part of things.

All I ask is that you offer a prayer, a thought or two, maybe light a candle for the horses. Whatever your belief system is is fine. Actually the simpler it is the better.

Please come join us at thecloudfoundation. This will not be like an online discussion--just something you do at home in private. Do it for the wild horses or for your own rescue. It's where your heart is that matters.

    Fren joan,

We are writing (again) to the elected Leader of our country. He is the compassionate wise one who will bring all things good and just to this land. We will implore him, once again, to end the suffering of our American herds. He DOES have the power. He can do it with a quick flick of his pen on an executive order. If only he was interested...

He made a deal with Mary Landru...An exorbitant bundle of dollars, was granted to her State, in exchange for her 'yes' vote on the Health Care bill. This is something that interests him...

I have written to her, to ask why she did not include help for the horses in her "deal" with the wise, compassionate, powerful leader.

As with all of my other entreats to the BOTH of them, about this deal, and about stopping the BLM's illegal roundups, I have not as yet received a reply.

And so, we write...we call...we pray...and wait. We MUST...always in hope that they will finally listen...that the compassionate good, and reasonable justice,(the "change' that we were carrot-lured with) will finally be granted, by that pen.

However, with this blaring evidence up full in our face, I am afraid that it is our great error, to assume that the wise leader will be moved by our impotent petitions to bring this brutal governmental plan to destroy our wild herds to an end.

I propose that we find a way to contact the Sheiks and powerful Middle East leaders about what is happening to our horses. They DO honor and revere the horse, as sacred and most beautiful in all of Alah's creation.

I AM SERIOUS! Perhaps by this round-about-way, we could enlist the help of Middle East foreign powers in this...for such as they DO catch the attention of the wise and powerful.

...we can also vote the bums out...and let them know exactly why. I am now writing, and campaigning for their ouster. If they will not hear us, we will vote FOR those who will.

We have so much work to do, on so many fronts...but, it DOES take strength and determination. To help us go on, we must keep the images of the strength and determination of the wild horse...its resilience and will to live, wild and FREE ever before us.

Off the soap box now...that was my own personal answer...you DID ask, did you not? We need to hear from others too.

    Let's roll!

Otherlyn...thank you...yes...yes...we can find options...and let us roll FOBS...I do not understand where is Mary Landrieu either...she could of made a heck of a deal...and I wonder if it is too late...SHE WAS SPEAKING FOR THE HORSES BEFORE...SHE STILL CAN...AND HELP THEM...

Posted by: joan roya at January 31, 2010 12:54 AM

    ###Fren Joan,

If we could get Landrieu to respond...IF she is even interested anymore...perhaps it is not too late for her to influence 'the pen wielder.' However, I fear, that now that she has the promise of $$$ for her State, and has already cast her "yes" vote to get into step with that horrible bill, her power of persuasion is now neutralized.

I suspect that she may not be in a negotiating position again, until the need to re-animate for another 'crisis' party-line monster can be stitched together behind closed doors.

I am puzzled... and disillusioned. It would seem that THE ONLY one we have been able to rely upon is (R)Congressman Whitfield, of KY. Perhaps HE has as few suggestions. In or out of office, he is a respectable horse advocate...always has been.

Shall we all write to him?

FOUR Hummingbirds!! FOUR OF THEM! One would sip and then 'rest' up on the plastic flower petal! LOL....rest a few seconds and then drop back down to drink a bit more, then back up onto the flower petal for another little 'rest':) I guess he didn't want to give up his spot!

I also noticed today LOTS more than usual Gold Finch..so, I'm thinking they're back until they leave for awhile to go nest and hatch their chilluns...then they come back TEN-FOLD!

Gotta love Mom Nature and her kidddds..better be preparing for buying more of those seeds pretty soon, I'm guessing!

I Love the 'causeway-railing' feeling of 'an assignment.'

Yesssss, we have a list to call. Totally do-able!

OK, let's spread the word. We begin our year HERE. We have professed devotion, and hopefully, re-committed to the cause. For the FOB, the year BEGINS on January 29th.

Let's call, and not only ask them for support, but ask them to respond with THEIR ideas as to how we can make the end of the brutal, disgraceful tragedy come about. Yes...let's give THEM an assignment.

If HR503 does not pass, we will need THEIR help in drafting something that WILL.

It will certainly be a great incentive for them to know that we are watching their votes, and waiting out here with OURS. They need to understand this dynamic. We must get through to them in a non-threatening-simply-THEIR-need-to-know manner. We have the hammer. They must fulfill their oath to serve.

    Let's Roll!

PS: Here is Congressman Whitfield's contact information. Remember FOB, he is a strong ally. He knows us. He was even instrumental in our rescue of FERDINAND's rare Japanese born daughter, racing in the USA, DREAM ASTOR. Were it not for his kind assistance, DA would have been raced down and down, in the Mid-West, and "lost." She has now been reunited with the the family of FERDINAND's original owners, and lives in Hawaii.

We will be asking him for his ideas on how we may get government action concerning HR503, and the BLM problem...how we might get the attention of the powers-that-be.

    Re: Strategies and "Secrecy"

An open question to all: What do we have to hide?

My opinion, and it's just that: mine, is that we SHOULD post strategies here and on the DB. Doing things in private only leads to discredit. Secrecy causes people to think that something nefarious is being planned. As evidence I give you the shenannigans in DC. The secrecy of the health bill "negotiations" have caused the people of this country to reject what is happening. The secrecy led to Scott Brown being elected in Mass.; a Republican in a strongly Democrat state.

This President campaigned, and won overwhelmingly, in part on openenss and honesty. We should be open in our actions too?

Let the pro-slaughter people see what we're doing. So what? We know that about 80% of Americans feel as we do on the issue. Do we want to risk that support by acting in secret? The pro-slaughter faction acts openly...what do we have to hide? I also think that we had more people here on a daily basis and being proactive when the strategy was posted regularly.

We can't stop the pro-slaughter folks from coming to this Comments section. We can't stop them from going to the DB either. They can create an "fake" name and just watch as easy as anyone else. How many "disrupters" do that now?

Just my opinion. No disrespect to anyone's feelings is intended. Just something to think about.

    Respectfully,
    Lee

    ### Dear Fren Lee,

With due respect to others of us who are of a different opinion, I am inclined to agree with you.

What you have said is true. The Pro-S minions > already know already are

Our strength, and what we must rely upon, is getting our message out, and to hold to the truth of what we know. We must project that truth, and hope that people in power will have the integrity of good conscience, to do the right thing.

Additionally, on a secondary front, we need to put the people who DO posses such integrity into those positions of power. We are NOT there yet...but we must keep trying, and work to persuade, with what we have, keeping in mind the fact that the 2010 elections are looming on the horizon. I would strongly propose that we must consider adding the 'stratagy' of reminding the current politicians with whom we are currently dealing, of that fact too.

All open and in the light of truth..."Just the facts, Sir or Madam."

Posted by: Otherlyn at January 31, 2010 5:30 PM

###Sorry...some of my previous post to Fren Lee, ahd disappeared from the post.

I am haveing puter problems that will be (hopefully) remedied today.

What was left out: The pro-S minions already are infiltrating everywhere. They already know our strat, and see us here, on the DB, and on othersites. Even so, we have nothing to fear, and nothing to hide.

SO WHAT if they know!?! The 'game' is not poker...the 'game' is TRUTH, and JUSTICE, and INTEGRITY...and we need to make a mighty wind that is stronger, and fresher than is theirs.

Theirs stinks of death, but is also has the whiff of money and power. If we think like horses...we will pay attention to what is in the wind.

Ours is the breath of Life, but we must also make it appealing, by keeping the whiff of power in it too. Nothing wrong with that...power, properly wielded is a Blessing.

    I don't know which is right !

How about STRATEGY public on here ,
    and
    TACTICS private ?

We could discuss our strategies here with each other, what we want to do , what is happening , etc.

then our tactics, of HOW we are going to do it, exact METHODS of what we are doing - we keep those private in emails. we will have to email a lot more I guess.
Perhaps this is too complicated for a large group , I don't know. Let's keep thinking.

Posted by: BobbieB. at January 31, 2010 7:54 PM

    Frens,

Let's just do what we do, as best and as often as we can...and THEN, do it a little more.

If there is direction to come, take it, and put in the time there.

Do as much as we can, on our own...apply suggestions to your own possibilities...watch for "assignments" from leadership...join groups...and GET THE WORD OUT!

Last, but not least...VOTE...but vote wisely. Next time,we must watch out for those who promise everything, and deliver nothing. Ideally, we would never re-elect anyone.

Both camps/schools-of-thought concerning posting what our plan are, can go forward without the complete approval of the other. I am grateful that there is great interest in our causes. In whichever 'camp' we be, let's not stop, until they are all safe.

    Your FOB Fren, O

Posted by: Otherlyn at January 31, 2010 8:41 PM

    Frens,

I appreciate everything that is being said. I think we have some good points and ideas here. I especially like Otherlyn's idea of reminding the members of Congress we contact that this IS an election year and we VOTE. As she said, "power, properly wielded is a Blessing." In this, WE have the power. Perhaps if they see an ever increasing number of people that will not vote for them, they will do what we want? They do want to stay in their positions of (perceived) power. Properly wielded, our votes are the most potent, important power in this country. Many, far too many, of these politicians have forgotten who they work FOR. They need to be reminded that "Reprsentative" is "not just a title, it's a job description." (Sorry I don't remember the attribution, but it is one of our FoBs reps. Mea culpa)

BobbieB, you make a great suggestion too. Discuss strategy here and tactics are kept secret. Shoot, that's what the political parties do! They're both always talking strategy on the news; how one party is going to do this or that and the other one espousing a counter-strategy. They do keep the tactics secret.

Here's a strategy to think about. We know many companies support, directly or indirectly ( via Belgian ownership for one), right? These pro-slaughter organizations do pay a lot of money for lobbyists. Where do they get that money? From you and me! What if we don't buy their products? Then where do they get the money to pay lobbyists, let alone stay in business? We can vote with our wallets. Don't buy Belgian chocolates. Don't buy Budweiser products.

"[T]he 'game' is TRUTH, and JUSTICE, and INTEGRITY...." I have long espoused being open in what we do as a matter of integrity. We tell the truth, in the open. Without our integrity we will lose this battle for justice. That can NOT happen!

We must keep thinking and trying. I have been very encouraged here lately too. Recently I lamented a seeming lack of passion. We weren't calling for justice like we did for Windchill I felt. Happily, I must say that I am thrilled that we're contacting a judge for Skye! Yipee skippee! THAT is the passion that will carry the day for our horses. Let's keep it up!

Lynne Brown, I've read your email. Many good points. I will respond too in the next day or so. I have many thoughts and want to bring them into coherence (you know I can be a little scatter-brained at times lol).

Third, your political opinions are of no concern here.

Fourth, The Obama administration has just passed it' first year. If you have not patience, you have no business playing in American politics.

Fifth, as I have said many times before, it took advocates to an end to greyhound racing in the US
20 years to just get rid of the GH tracks IN THE NORTH. And lots of very focused, hardworking, single-minded politically saavy people.

Sixth, O: you have to be in this for the long haul. Money is involved. Lots and lots of money and power you could not imagine. So don't even try to. Just keep calling.

Seventh, there are a wealth of smarter people than US involved in the ABR up to their waists. Let them do their job. And try to acquire some patience for the process.

Eighth: AH HA! We all have our own ideas as to how this should ride. Keep them to yourself. That's why God made people who made email, O. Write all the emails you wish and keep everything else off the ABR>

OTHERLYN - I find your snide, disparaging reference to the President of the United States as "the compassionate wise one who will bring all things good and just to this land" to be extremely offensive and inappropriate. Personally I would have had more respect for you if you had simply stated the obvious - that you can't stand the man. Then at least I would have been able to credit you with honesty...

Coming from you, this is especially hypocritical in view of the fact that in the past you have delived at least one chastising sermon on the topic "ABR is not a political site." Guess it's just fine when you indulge in partisan political attacks...not so fine if I should do it.

You have made your political affiliation apparent to all, and you are entitled to your beliefs and opinions just as we ALL are. However, I find it necessary to refresh your memory: when YOUR President was in office and YOUR party controlled the Congress, we made no further progress toward eliminating horse slaughter than we have thus far during the current administration. Hmmmm, perhaps it's NOT a partisan issue at all...could it be all about the money?

And as for public posting of strategy, I am and always have been opposed to such a practice. We have lost many valiant warriors who chose to leave this place because they couldn't bear to be affiliated with an organization which insisted upon putting strategy in front of the eyes of the world. Contrary to Lee's opinion, I do not believe that secrecy always = "nefarious" activity. Rather, it is simply about the wisdom of "tipping our hand..."

I will use a military analogy to clarify my opinion: would General ABC contact the leader of the enemy forces, General XYZ, to let him know what time, when and where he planned to launch an attack? I think not...after all, remember that "LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS!"

And make no mistake about it, ladies and gentlemen - WE ARE AT WAR for the very survival of our American horses!

Posted by: Deborah Anderson at February 1, 2010 1:45 AM

Dear Jonna, with all due respect, sorry but some of your points can just as easily be applied to the rather politically unpleasant opposing viewpoints you have shared here from time to time. I'm quite sure some of the good folks here have wanted to provide their opinion - to be fair and balanced - but did not. It isn't necessarily disrespect to point out disappointment in the difference between campaign reality and real world reality. Political opinions can cause ill will in even the closest of families. You know what they say about opinions, right? Everybody has one! Even me and I doubt you'd like it! I think the frustration level after the emotions of last week and wanting something positive to come out of DC, some acknowledgement even, are perfectly normal. And, if memory serves, you have asked more than once where the frakkin' leaders were. Yes? As to your eighth point, if that were the case, no one would post anything here! I actually have emailed you twice, long ago. No matter the subjects now but guess you weren't interested in communicating and that's OK! You are a warrior for the animals, battle scarred but still in the fight. For that devotion, you deserve respect - just as Otherlyn does. Your wisdom concerning the money and power involved is well taken - and shared by everyone here - because we do know the real world. Bottom line, no matter the political beliefs, we all have one very important thing in common that Barbaro knew would bring us here - our love for animals and our wholehearted desire to see the end of horse slaughter. This isn't a pretty process but we'll stick with it no matter where we get our directions from and, agree or disagree, everyone deserves respect. I BELIEVE

I also remember posting something on this page not so long ago, in which I voiced my own political opinions and my ears were SOUNDLY pinned back for doing such a thing, apparently it does depend on which side of the fence the writer sits, as to whether it will be accepted or slammed...I'm very sorry about that.

I felt, Otherlyn, that your post of last night was extremely condescending and oozed sarcasim, I certainly didn't apprecaite reading but I sat on my hands as I remembered you and others so adamantly writing here that day to tell me this is NOT a political website.

I sat on those hands until I saw strategy being posted here...voiced my objection of that, for essentially the same reasons Nancy voiced tonight in her post and again, I felt my ears being pinned back.

I will continue to fight for the welfare of our American horses, the domestic ones and the wild ones...in my own way, quietly and not in a public forum. I think it is important to point out here, that simply because people aren't writing publicly of their efforts to save the horses, does not mean they aren't working to save them.

We all may disagree politically but we are all here to help the horses. Perhaps if we just stick to doing that to the best of our abilities and leave our political feelings off this site, we can accomplish the 'helping of the horses.'

    FROM UP TOP AND ALEX:
Yesterday we learned about new slaughter rules for horses in Canada. When they come in to place it will mean essentially quarantining slaughter-bound horses for 6 months, which will add considerable costs to the slaughter system. Also of note are the medications that are banned from any horses that are slaughtered regardless of when those medications are given. These include bute, which is of course used at one point or another with pretty much every horse. Compliance seems to be a key issue: Horse slaughter rules changing in Canada .

I read with great dismay the discord here between our IMPORTANT members and how they word their concerns and how some are reacting. It's called FRUSTRATION.

Every administration since WW2 has contributed, to some degree, to the perilous situation this country is now faced with. The issue really is the failure of our governmental system to function. It no longer represents the will of the people. IT DOES NOT EVEN LISTEN. In the Senate, House of Representatives and ALL levels of government you now have self serving, egotistical, greed driven, enept and immoral individuals. Its not about the President, necessarily, its about the complete breakdown of our system. The constitution specifically states " By the people, For the people". This means as an elected official representing your constituents you are REQUIRED morally, ethically and legally to represent and, if required, to vote the will of those people. That also means that you DO NOT vote or do actions for your own self serving needs (THE BLM). If your constituents indicate through statistics that, out of 1000, 600 want health care/ 400 are opposed your are REQUIRED to vote in the affirmitive for health care or vice versa, just an example. Go watch C Span hearings if you want you see how badly this government functions. Its a disgrace. When Scott Brown was elected it was not about him being a Republican it was a clear cut message the people are going to take back this country through the system. We MUST demand that morals be a part of being an elected official.

We have an opportunity here to fight for HR503.We have a GREAT CAUSE WITH GREAT PEOPLE HERE. ALL OF YOU!! We all have the same desire, the RIGHTS OF THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK. We can NEVER lose sight of who we are and what we stand for.

Lastly, the American people right now have 3 things in common, They LOVE their country, CONCERNED where we are headed (in the toilet) and they're SCARED to death. Too many layers of " insulation" have been stacked between the common person and the government. BREAK THAT BARRIER! If you can go to one of Obamas town meetings submit your name to speak and BE HEARD!

Failure to stop animal abuse, IS NOT AN OPTION.

Hey Stu, just who is "IMPORTANT" here? For members who aren't deemed IMPORTANT, does that make the rest "unimportant"?
