    Barbaro Updates: 984

    updates are now here.

Update 5828: Seven galloped on a chilly Sunday morning here at Woodbine. All mine galloped nicely. The siren was kept busy this morning and I saw one rider walking back with his stirup in his hand! All in all a decent morning's work for this time of year. Rovina was a nice winner for us yesterday. She has now won four races here at Woodbine, which is the most by any of our horses. A few others are on 3 wins, we shall see if any of those will get lucky during the upcoming last week of racing!

Lentenor put in a good effort yesterday to finish second in his second start, and first start on the turf. He did not have the smoothest of trips, and appeared to break in the air a little, but all in all a decent effort. He does look to be a big horse! Stardom Bound was flat in her reappearance won in good style by Flashing Flashing Shows Her Heels in Sharp Gazelle Win. Kodiak Kowboy was impressive in winning the Cigar Mile. It's nice to see he can stretch out a little: Kodiak Kowboy KO's Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile. And Ventura kept up the good run of horses previously trained by Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel: Ventura Fulfills Frankel's Wish in Matriarch.

Over in Japan it was the Japan Cup. This race was won by another filly, Vodka. She just hung on in the closing stages: VODKA PREVAILS IN JAPAN CUP...BARELY. Summer Bird, who is also in Japan and was preparing for a start in the Japan Dirt next weekend, suffered a career threatening injury yesterday: SUMMER BIRD INJURED IN JAPAN.

Update 5827: Only five galloped this Saturday morning for Steve at Woodbine, as things continue to wind down towards the end of the meet. And a little chilly too, but not too bad for this time of year. We have not had any snow yet! All mine galloped well for a short and straightforward morning's work. We have five runners this afternoon, so lets hope for a little racing luck!

Of course much attention today will be focused on Aqueduct, as Barbaro's 2yo brother Lentenor makes his second lifetime start and first start on the turf. It is the third race: Lenny Definite for Aqueduct Race. There are also plenty of other good races on the card at Aqueduct today, including the Grade 1 Cigar Mile: Short But Strong Field to Contest Cigar Mile. And Stardom Bound, last seen in the Spring when she was beaten by Hooh Why in the Ashland, makes her return to the races this afternoon at Aqueduct in the Gazelle: Stardom Bound Returns in Gazelle.

Fluke won the Grade 1 Citation Handicap yesterday at Hollywood Park. It was an emotional win and first winner for longtime Frankel assistant Humberto Ascanio: Fluke delivers emotional Citation victory for connections. And 3yo Blame signaled that he will be a strong contender in the older horse division next year by beating some very useful older horses in the Clark Handicap: Blame Points the Way in Huge Clark Verdict.

Finally New York is looking to strengthen it's Equine abuse laws in light of Ernie Paragallo's abuse case. The Paragallo trial is expected to get underway in the Spring: N.Y. officials hope to strengthen abuse laws in light of Paragallo arrest.

Update 5826: Six galloped this morning for Steve at Woodbine. A nice and easy morning. For my first set I was on my favorite, Salty. As we were approaching the tunnel another rider fell off and his horse came towards us. Thankfully Salty did not take too much interest! All galloped nicely. A few horses are now starting to ship out as we close in towards the end of the meet. Storm Treasure was one of the ones who left this morning.

Woodbine was represented in Kentucky yesterday with a terrific win by Serenading in the Falls City Handicap. Congratulations to trainer Jose Carroll: Serenading Sings Winning Tune in Falls City. At Churchill Downs today we have the Clark Handicap, which looks to be a terrific race for older horses: Macho Again, Einstein to meet again in Clark.

Here is a survey of all the major races this weekend: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies.

We also learned yesterday that Lentenor is entered for a race at Aqueduct on Saturday. And it appears that is where he is scheduled to run: lentenor to race .

Update 5825: Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for you.

Seven horses galloped this morning at Woodbine. Three of these also went to the gate. All went nicely. It was a bit of a damp morning here, but unseasonably warm. Let's hope this weather holds out for another 10 days, as the meet is over after next weekend's racing!

The biggest news over the last 24 hours for us is Saturday's entry for Barbaro's 2yo brother, Lentenor: Surprise!, Lentenor to race at Churchill.

We also learned that Quality Road will not run this weekend in the Cigar: Quality Road out of Cigar Mile, excerpt:

"The bottom line is we felt maybe it was a little bit of a push for the horse given everything that transpired between Santa Anita and now," Baker said. "We're focusing now on what we hope to be a very productive 2010 campaign that puts him in position to be champion older horse and Horse of the Year. With that in mind we're giving him a little bit more time."

I do want to welcome Amy, who is now a new moderator of the ABR discussion board.

Finally, and a little off topic, a whitepaper I have been working on was published yesterday. It is follow on from a paper I published in 2006 regarding social media: Engagement Marketing Revisited: How to Embrace the New Social Media Tools.

Update 5824: I am back! Thanks Wendy for providing the updates in my absense. I had a wonderful 3 day trip to the UK, which included London and Cornwall.

    And please keep calling.

Update 5823: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update (back on schedule).

Things are slowly getting back to normal here at Casa Superfecta, after a quick jaunt to the left coast for some soccer (but more on that later). The Breeders' Cup may be in the history books, but Thanksgiving weekend offers quite a variety of top-level racing.

On Thanksgiving Day at Churchill Downs, Unbridled Belle and Swift Temper are in action in the Falls City Handicap; it is likely the last start for both millionaire mares.

The following day, Einstein is aiming to return to winning form in the Clark Handicap; as Julien Leparoux will be in Japan, he'll have Rajiv Maragh aboard as well as some stiff competition from Macho Again and Bullsbay. But it seems that it may not be the final start for the stalwart son of Spend a Buck - he's been supplemented to the Hong Kong Cup in December - however, it would still be lovely to see him win.

Both coasts are in action over the weekend; in New York, the Cigar Mile is the headliner. Quality Road has been working hard on his gate schooling, and the distance makes the race seem like a good fit for him - if he wants to start. It's a great lineup in any case - Bribon, Kodiak Kowboy, Munnings, Vineyard Haven and Pyro are all possible starters. The 2-year-olds will also be on display in the Demoiselle and the Remsen.

In California, Ventura has a chance to give Bobby Frankel a final win in the Matriarch; while she will run in the name of his longtime assistant, Humberto Ascanio, Frankel was still directing her career, even at the end:

"Last Friday (Nov. 13), Bobby called me while I was at the barn and told me, 'I'm going home tomorrow. I'm not going to take any more transfusions. I just don't want to go on like this.' And he said, 'I'm scared.'

"There was a silence, and then, Bobby said, 'Talk to Humberto and just tell him, two easy halfs for Ventura and she'll be fine for the Matriarch.'

Ventura's frequent rivals Rutherienne and Diamondrella (who is now trained by Gary Stevens, which was apparently something of a surprise to him) are also expected, but it would be nice to see Ventura end with a flourish. Also looking for a positive final race is Cowboy Cal in the Citation, but he will have competition in the form of El Gato Malo, Whatsthescript and another Frankel horse - Proudinsky.

And while she will not be running, Zenyatta will still be very much a presence in California over the weekend; she's expected to parade around Hollywood Park between races on Sunday. There will be posters, DVDs and other collectibles on offer - although hopefully these are not part of the package.

Overseas, Breeders' Cup Turf repeat champion Conduit will line against top Japanese mare Vodka in the Japan Cup - last year's winner, Screen Hero, will be on hand to defend his title. Conduit will be retiring to stud in Japan after the race, but he could take home a considerable bonus if he wins on Sunday. Interpatation, Marsh Side and Just As Well will be representing the US in the race.

And while neither news item relates specifically to this weekend, there is welcome word that Rachel Alexandra has begun to stretch her legs again, and that Goldikova will, as rumored, remain in training next year. Rachel Alexandra will head to the Fair Grounds for the winter after leaving Churchill Downs, while Goldikova's campaign to win a third Breeders' Cup Mile will begin again in France.

Check back later (likely after the holiday weekend) for some thoughts on what racing might learn from American soccer - and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Update 5822: It's great to see one of racing's stars planning on running next year and attempt a three-peat in the Breeder's Cup Mile: Goldikova Targets Mile Three Peat

The Paulick Report posted this story about several of Kiaran McLaughlin's horses having allegedly test positive for a banned substance: McLaughlin Horses Allegedly Test for Banned Substance in KY

The final numbers from the November Keeneland Breeding Stock sales have many within the industry showing some optimism: Optimism Persists as Keeneland November Ends

"The Thoroughbred market is best described as resilient," Russell said. "The strong clearance rate reflects the fact that horsemen are adjusting to the new reality. Consignors did a good job of appraising their horses. Throughout the industry, changes are taking place - a reduced number of mares bred, reduced stallion fees, and other measures that will insure a return to market profitability in the near future."

    And please keep calling.

Update 5821: Some exciting races are coming up on the horizon which will be of interest to many racing fans.

This coming Friday will be the Clark Handicap which features a rematch of Macho Again and Einstein. This may be Einstein's last start as there was discussion of retiring him. Also in the field will be the Whitney Stakes winner, Bullsbay and three year old Blame who recently won the Fayette Stakes against older horses at Keeneland: Einstein, Macho Again Working Toward Clark Rematch

Coming up in December will be the Japan Cup Dirt. It was reported that Summer Bird is now settled in Japan to prepare for his start in that race. Summer Bird Arrives for Japan Cup Dirt

On the west coast, Joe Talamo enjoyed a 5-win afternoon (one shy of the track record) with one of the wins coming in the featured race, The Moccasin Stakes at Hollywood Park: Talamo highlights five-win day at Hollypark by taking Moccasin aboard Bickersons

    Found on the Paulick Report

    And please keep calling.

Update 5820: Wendy here bringing you today's update while Alex is away visiting the UK.

Yesterday brought us four Grade III stakes races across the country. The Kennedy Road, at Woodbine, found Smokey Fire winning his first stakes race: Smokey Fire stays Hot in Kennedy Road. In the New York racing scene, the Asmussen trained Haynesfield won the Discovery Handicap by an impressive 4 ½ lengths: Haynesfield Drives to Clear Victory in Discovery Handicap. In turf racing, Acoma won the Cardinal Handicap at Churchill Downs in a very close finish: Acoma takes Cardinal Handicap in a Dogfight and finally, in California, 2 year old American Lion won the Hollywood Prevue Stakes: American Lion Roars Home in Hollywood Prevue

Jay Privman reports from California that Lava Man turned in a bullet work for 6 furlongs at Hollywood Park yesterday:

He's getting closer. Lava Man, off for more than a year, turned in the fastest six-furlong drill of the morning at Hollywood Park on Saturday when he was timed in 1:12.20 for trainer Doug O'Neill.

In other news, Hal Wiggins, trainer for Rachel Alexandra when she won the Kentucky Oaks, has been named the Kentucky Horseman of the Year.

Update 5819: Seven galloped for Steve at Woodbine this Saturday morning. And all seven galloped nicely, although a couple were a little strong. A nice easy morning's work ahead of a long day. Tonight I will be traveling to the UK for a three day visit (London and Cornwall). In my absense Wendy will post an update here each day. I will be back late Tuesday night.

Paulick Report published an article on free adoption of Thoroughbreds yesterday: GOOD NEWS FRIDAY sponsored by Liberation Farm: FREE TO A GOOD HOME.

The feature race here at Woodbine today is the Kennedy Road. It may be one of the best races for the entire meet: Field Commission Battles 9 in Kennedy Road. And here is the list of where to watch the few key races throughout North America: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies.

Finally Zenyatta's team gets one of what might be a few end of year awards: Turf publicists name 'Team Zenyatta' as Big Sport of Turfdom.

Update 5818: Eight galloped this Friday morning for Steve at Woodbine. All galloped nicely. I took two to the gate for some schooling. Both schooled nicely, although one was a little "fractious" after schooling in the gate. In a good way! No rain this morning and still a little warm for this time of year, so good weather for training.

Jockey Julia Brimo, who won a Sovereign Award in Canada as an apprentice, is still recovering from her bad spill at Keeneland. Here is her "get well card." And jockeys in North America will donate proceeds from a mount on November 28 in support of the Julia Brimo Fund: Jockeys to contribute to Julia Brimo Fund.

Quality Road, who was scratched from the Breeders' Cup Classic after becoming fractious during the gate loading process, is back to school in New York: Quality Road Passes First Gate Test.

The last horse entered in the name of the late Bobby Frankel appropriately won: Frankel's Final Entrant at Hollywood Wins.

Update 5817: Seven galloped for Steve this morning at Woodbine. And a bit of a damp morning too! Three of mine also went to the gate for some schooling. All schooled nicely and galloped nicely.

Last night, while at the races, I met Mike Ziegler. Mike is here at Woodbine for the NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance. It was fun chatting about all things racing, including the Breeders' Cup and Zenyatta and Quality Road.

This two-sided essay on the horse slaughter issue was published yesterday. I was interviewed for the essay. Kelsey, the author, is local to Woodbine. It's long and thorough: Horse Slaughter: Complications and Intricacies, it ends:

"The way I look at this is like the starfish parable: a guy walks up and down the beach all day, finds a starfish on the beach, chucks it back into the sea, sees another starfish on the beach, chucks it back into the sea. Someone comes up to him and says, 'Why are you spending all your time doing that? You're not going to stop starfish getting stranded on the beach and dying'. He's like, 'Yeah, but for that starfish I chucked back into the sea, it meant the world to him'. That's the way I justify it. And for that horse, those 3100, it's pretty cool."

In the fifth race at Churchill Downs yesterday a 12yo mare, who had had nine years off, was entered to run. She would have been the first starter for her trainer. Sense prevailed finally and she was a stewards scratch: Grand Forks to remain in training after scratch.

Old Friends has opened a division in New York. It's first resident, Moonshadow Gold, is scheduled to arrive later this week: Old Friends Satellite Opens in NY.

    And please keep calling.

Update 5816: Ten galloped this morning for Steve at Woodbine. So a busy morning. Four of these also went to the gate for some schooling. All galloped nicely and schooled nicely. Once the sun came up it turned into a beautiful morning for training horses. It was a little chilly early.

As we were finishing up jockey Constant Montpellier swung by the barn. Constant is now a retired jockey! He had a gate accident a month or two ago, and had planned to retire at the end of this meet. He decided it was not worth coming back for the final part of the meet. Good luck to Constant Montpellier for the future!

I wrote a short essay, published on Paulick Report, about why it would be ill-advised for animal rights people to use the Quality Road gate incident to further their agenda: ALEX BROWN: DON'T MAKE QUALITY ROAD A POSTER CHILD.

If anything could have been predicted in racing ahead of time, it's that Sea The Stars would be voted Horse of the Year in Europe. And of course that happened yesterday: SEA STARS IN CARTIER AWARDS.

Trainer Bobby Frankel was laid to rest yesterday, one day after he died from lymphoma at the age of 68: Frankel remembered as 'one of greatest ever'.

    And please keep calling.

Update 5815: Here is this week's Facebook Group e-mail: Tweet this: 18 cents / pound, ABR Radio Show, Thoroughbred Times, David Cotey, Zenyatta, Claremont Auction, Quebec Feedlot, Kip Deville, 1k Twitter followers, ABR changes, Our Boys, Bobby Frankel, skipping next week.

Following the death of Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, there has been an outpouring of reflection of his terrific career. You can see many of those articles on Paulick Report.

I only had five to gallop for Steve this morning, so a nice and easy morning's work. It was chilly, with a layer of frost sitting on top of the track. But with plenty of layers on I managed to stay warm. All my horses galloped nicely.

Steve Haskin provides an excellent commentary on how difficult it will be this year to vote a horse of the year after the two terrific performances of Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra: Haskin on Horse of the Year: Stalemate.

    And please keep calling.

    For Debbie and Jonna:

    www.tbfriends.com

Tuesday, November 17th... A new project, going into this a bit confused, but hopefully we find a way. Horse ranches in Idaho, Utah and Wyoming are dumping their horses off at California auctions, and feed lots. Apparently this has been going on since August. Horse killers paying a hefty $25.00 for each horse, then reselling them to mexican slaughter.

On Sunday we were able to buy two quarter horses from Utah, and one is pregnant.

Of course the major question is why come to California? Horses in enough trouble here. Boggles the brain.

We are thankful to Randy at 3 Mile Express. Also Michelle in Sacramento. Brian in Ogden, Utah. Felipe in Orem, Utah.

We are thankful to Sheldon, who yesterday transported a pregnant thoroughbred mare to her new home in Loomis.

And now it is your turn. 9 days until Thanksgiving.

Becky, 18, Benicia, California: I am thankful to my Uncle Rob, who had room in his house for my sister and I, and not once has he complained about the messes we make.

Paula, 20, Benicia, California: I am thankful for our gelding Buster, our dog Buff, and I am thankful for Uncle Rob who gave us a place to live and makes us feel important.

Tammy, 30s, Vacaville, California: I am thankful for my old girl Ginny, who stands at her gate waiting for an apple and a kiss goodnight.

Morgan, 14, Houston, Texas: I am thankful for a hundred million things, but number one would be my mom because she lets me bring home lost animals, and she helps me take care of them.

Rachel, 25, 30 minutes from beautiful Buffalo, New York: I am thankful for my husband Kirk, my sister Terri, and my best friend Nicole.

Stacey, Santa Barbara, California: I am thankful for my family, for my best friend who brought horses back into my life, and for my goofy gelding Boo.

Lynn, Mt. Shasta, California: I am thankful for my husband who does not mind paying for the upkeep of 7 horses, and we only ride two of them, but they all make me happy and that is enough for him.

Megan, Spokane, Washington: I am thankful for an inexpensive place to board both of my horses since I lost my job.

Alicia, 19, San Jose, California: I am thankful my dad found a way for me to begin college classes in January, and I am thankful my dad is going to spend the first week with me in my new city.

Toby, 20, Pomona, California: I am thankful to a lady named Clair, who trusted me enough to care for her thoroughbred gelding Blade, and now Blade is all mine, and I pinch myself to make sure this is not a dream.

Fawn, 38, Clearlake, California: I am thankful for all the blessings in my life, my family, my friends, good health, and the opportunity to help others.

Taylor, 15, Lansing, Michigan: I am thankful for your website because I learned about race horses going to slaughter, so my mom and me rescued a gelding in Virginia, and I love him with all my heart and soul.

Michelle, 24, Richmond, California: I am most thankful to my best friend Britt who helps out at a homeless shelter, and she has helped me become a stronger person.

Nichole, 19, Davis, California: I am thankful the first words from my dad after I wrecked his car were, are you okay?

Jeanette, 62, New Mexico: I am thankful for our 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, his journey brought me to his equine family that I campaign to save everyday from neglect and slaughter.

Emily, 47, North Carolina: I am thankful there are those with fortitude who spend their lives saving those that would otherwise slip through the cracks.

Noelle, 18, Citrus Heights, California: I am thankful to Josh who always listens when I cry about the sufferings of animals.

Kathy, almost 49, South Carolina: I am thankful for the good guys, like people who rescue horses and help needy kids, and I am thankful for my Norwegian Fjord gelding Willi.

Barbara, 60s, Denver, Colorado: I am thankful to the little neighbor girl Amanda, she does my shopping and answers my emails, and she reads to me because my eyes are no good, and she never accepts any money, she is just a good kid.

So cold outside you can see your breath. Ice on my windshield. Delicious hot coffee from Peets. Tasty apple turnovers made by Costco. Enjoy your only a few flies remain Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. Thank you all for sharing. I am inspired.

    Joe

Horses up and down our driveway:

Top Row: Our horse hauler Monica (left) and her friend Michelle transported King Lee and Olive Queen to their new home with Anja in Las Vegas. Monica phoned later to say their trip went well.

Bottom Left: The pregnant mare Libby stops to lick the bowl, before loading for her new home with Hope in Sebastopol. A big Thank You to Georgia for providing transportation.

Bottom Right: From the feed lot in Wilton we purchased a moose. 17.1 hands, with a racing tattoo which says he is 5. His new name My Cousin Vinnie, and he is lame with terrible feet.

Hiya, FsOB, and an especially happy birthday to you, Alex! May this evening be filled with good friends, delicious food, and a "Tetley's" or two to celebrate your new birth year. I may be behind on reading updates, but are you preparing for a visit to the UK?

Wishing everyone here "ACN". I really enjoyed reading the blog from Steve Haskin, which was entitled "Stalemate" 8(re. the challenging HOY decision to be made this year).

Wasn't it delightful to see that our FOB Jeanette from NM was quoted in Joe Shelton's blog, as she thanked Barbaro for bringing all of us together? Thank you for your kind words, Jeanette, and how fitting a tribute on Alex's birthday. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Bobbie B.: If I remember correctly, Alex is posting updates once a day. I think that this means that the Comments change over to the new day later than usual in the AM. Therefore, my morning entry looks as though I'd made it late yesterday (if that makes any sense, I probably garbled that explanation).
To Jonna: Hoping your computer is on the mend soon.
To Lou Ann: How nice of you to make a contribution to the Equestrian Club at York College! Very pleasing to know that the Club's members are fans of Barbaro, too.
To Jane: Please know that I am hoping that you received some words of encouragement about Skye's condition from the vet. specialist today.
To Liz in the UK: Hoping all is well in Devonshire. I was amazed to see that the Cornish Coast was hit with such a major coastal storm yesterday. ####

    ## Robyn , I'm so glad you were here this morning as usual. I knew the changeover was going to look different , but hadn't put it together when I posted, so thanks for the clue-in !

    ## Jan in Florida, I hope your garage sales and all you are doing to move is going well. Its hard work , I speak from lots of experience, so good luck and best wishes.

Goodnight all you FOBs . I hope your days were wonderful, or at least good.

Somebody , don't remember who , once said that
all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
If you are not calling or emailing, etc. - please think about that.

Wishing you a good night, warm and cozy , bye now,

Hiya, FsOB! The Weds. AM skyline facing due west across the Thames is a pinkening-blue. Alex, it looks like you have a very busy morning with 10 horses to ride. Stay warm!

Wishing all here a safe & productive day! Peace, Robyn

    #### To Bobbie B.: Glad you saw my note last evening. I am trying to recall the notable person to whom that quote is attributed. Why do I feel in my bones that it is one that CJ often invoked? Jonna may know the source of this quote, too.
To Jane, hoping that your visit to the vet. specialist provided you with some options for Skye. ####

    ### Congratulations and Best Wishes on your birthday, Fren Alex. I hope you have memorable day with great hope for many happy days to come.

A QR Report from Blood Horse:

Quality Road, who was forced to scratch from the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) after suffering minor injuries during a bad incident at the starting gate, arrived safely at Todd Pletcher’s barn at Belmont Park at 6 a.m. Tuesday following an uneventful cross-country van ride from Santa Anita.

Because he refused to board the plane, Quality Road had to be vanned from California to Churchill Downs, where he remained for two days before departing for New York on Monday at 3 p.m.

According to Chris Baker, farm manager for owner Edward Evans, Quality Road will begin gate schooling on Wednesday with former NYRA starter Bob Duncan, who has worked with a number of bad gate horses over the years. The colt, who balked and kicked at the gate prior to the Jockey Club Gold Cup(gr. I), had extensive gate schooling prior to leaving for California and was no problem, Baker said.

Quality Road's progress will be monitored closely by Pletcher and Baker before a decision is made whether to point the son of Elusive Quality to the Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile (gr. I) Nov. 28.

    ..............................................

We certainly wish him a speedy recovery. Yes?

    ..............................................

    RIP, RED RANSOM.
    ..............................................

Have a good day all. Please make your calls and send your E-mails and FAXES. We must not relent.

    Your FOB Fren, O

2,500 Wild Horses to be Rounded Up in Dead of Winter
Assault Planned on Last Stronghold of Wild Horse Herds

    Dear Supporters,

Despite a significant public outcry, BLM plans a helicopter round up to remove thousands of wild horses in northwestern Nevada, an area called the Calico Complex in a remote and starkly beautiful landscape of volcanic outcrops, steep canyons and wide valleys. It is home to over 3,000 wild horses and represents the last stronghold of the once large herds of American mustangs that roamed the west by the millions.

The attack on Calico is scheduled to begin in December and continue through the dead of winter. Calico is a challenging environment in winter when bitter winds howl and blizzards are common. If BLM were truly interested in preserving wild horses they would not run them over treacherous terrain in winter when all wildlife are simply trying to survive by expending the least amount of energy possible.

Regardless, BLM intends to round up from 2486 to 2747 mustangs, taking away from them what they value most. . .their freedom and the families. They plan to release only 264 horses (80 mares, all treated with infertility drugs, and 184 stallions) back onto 1.5 million acres of our public lands, and incarcerate the rest in holding facilities already bursting at the seams. Taxpayers pay over $100,000 a day to feed these captives who were removed to make room for more welfare cattle on public lands. Because only 264 wild horses will be turned back into four herd areas, each herd will be genetically non-viable and left vulnerable to inbreeding.

A spokesman for BLM denies that the agency is managing our wild herds to extinction, but actions speak louder than this hollow promise. Only token, remnant herds will remain in this, the last stronghold of the wild horses. The onslaught is scheduled to begin December 1 and continue through the end of February 2010.

The Cloud Foundation is asking you to stand up for these horse and demand that the round up be halted. It is nothing more than government sponsored cruelty.

Call (202) 456-1111 and email President Obama
Call (202) 224-3121 and email your Congressional Representatives

FOB's I just called Churchill Downs and blew a gasket. The race this afternoon for this 12 YO is a DISGRACE. The guy I talked said he's disgusted as well. There is no rule that says this damn fool cannot race this horse. Vets are standing by to watch her from the paddock to the race. STOP THE RACE PERIOD!! What is wrong with these people. The racing stewards are going to let this go? You can't be serious! It just gets WORSE! SAY YOUR PARYERS!!

Thanks for the article Alex. As a bystander via the internet it was hard to watch what happened to QR in the Breeder's Cup BUT I wasn't there, I wasn't one of the people at the gate trying to get horses in. So, it's easy to sit back and criticize. However, I do have to say that everyone's behavior in this world is fortunately met with feedback from those around us. It's a good thing if my friends remind me of something I am doing that is unacceptable. So, there's kind of a fine line of listening to the feedback and deciding what is helpful and what is not.

Stu what horse? name and race?

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at November 18, 2009 7:17 PM

Secretary Kenneth Salazar is a former Senator, appointed to Sec. of the Interior. IMHO, none of them are going to listen to the citizens' outcries, but because, bluntly, they don't have to and they don't care.

They want what they want. They want this land back for cattle, oilmen, mineral exploration, etc. and they make money on it.
They don't want wild and free horses that people come to see.

Congress set aside this land many years ago for the wild horse herds, but with caveats. And those loopholes are what is being used , to disenfranchise the horse herds from the land.

Also , IMHO again, to decimate and eventually destroy the herds.
If the outcry is big enough , the Congress or President might act - but they have so much on right now -- all we can do is pray and contact them. Over and over -contact them, maybe a message will get through. Poor horses...

    ## Joan, prayers for Pierre the furbaby, and his

    ## Jane, how are you, my dear ? I'm afraid to ask, but I've been praying for you. Lub and hugs,

    ####### STU ,
I just called Churchill Downs to complain, and the guy said they had just scratched the horse , and are not allowing her to run.
I told him I was glad to hear his stewards had a conscience. He laughed and said thanks.

so FOB, you did a good job today, your call might have and probably did make the difference in this horse's life. BRAVO.

    For Jonna:

Wednesday, November 18th... Yesterday several horse lovers came together in a Northern California chat room, and saved the life of a former race horse mare. In one hour $300.00 was raised, and transportation takes place this morning. The mare is 8, and has been badly abused at mexican rodeo.

We are thankful to Robert and Joanna, for saying yes to a pregnant quarter horse mare. Our horse hauler Angela bought Joanna a gift card to Starbucks. A little caffeine to help with those long nights next spring.

I would love to spend the morning sharing letters about how thankful you are for the thankful sentences. Maybe after Thanksgiving, on a slow nothing to write about morning, I can show some of your e-mails. Uplifting, to say the least.

But for now we continue on. 8 days until Thanksgiving.

Ruth, 58, Gilroy, California: I am thankful to horses for getting my daughter Jennifer back on her feet.

Kelcie, 16, Tacoma, Washington: In July my dad had heart surgery, and I am thankful for my best friend Megan who stayed by my side, and I am thankful for my horse Prince for understanding how I could not see him that day.

Randi, 23, Elk Grove, California: I am most thankful to Justin, who paid the tab when my horse Monk needed eye surgery.

Ben, Chicago: This year more than ever, I am thankful to my family for understanding my passion for thoroughbreds.

Todd, 34, Vallejo, California: I am thankful for my daughter Shelby, who said horsey weeks before she said daddy.

Rikki, 20, Boise State, home of the best football team in America: I am so grateful and thankful horse racing in Idaho is on the way out.

Stacy, 40s, Lincoln, Nebraska: I am thankful for my ex race horse Silver who I rescued from a slaughter truck in Texas, and Silver has taught both my kids how to ride.

Brianna, 17, Pinole, California: I am going to be 18 on Thanksgiving Day, and I am thankful for my mom, my sister, my mare, and my graduation next June, when a year ago no one believed I could.

Denise, 44, Helena, Montana: I am thankful for Morry, he has been with me since 1996 and his old bones are slowing down, but that is okay because mine are too.

Ellen, 40s, Wilcox, Arizona: I am thankful to my brother Pete for teaching me to ride, and what a difference horses have made in my life.

Jinna, 14, Memphis: I give thanks to God for a roof over my head and food on my table.

Holly, 17, Memphis: I am thankful for Mrs. Green who helps me study so I can graduate.

Ashleigh, 18, Salt Lake City: I am thankful for my horse Marvin who came to me from Tbfriends, and I am thankful for my mom Ellie, and my trainer Jill.

Brett, 18, Salt Lake City: I am thankful to my best friend Ashleigh for telling me about Tbfriends, and one day when I actually have any money I am going to get horse from you.

Alexandra, 15, Las Vegas: I am thankful to my mom for always being there, even when I mess up.

Ellen, 46, Chico, California: I am thankful for my horse Marvin, and I am thankful to Tbfriends for introducing me to such a wonderful horse.

Chloe, 15, on 300 acres near Kansas City: I am so thankful my brother Nick gets to come home and eat with us on Thanksgiving.

Denise, old but young at heart, Foster City, California: I am thankful my son loves horses, or we would have absolutely nothing in common, Joe you should listen to the idiotic music he loves.

Jen, 25, Rancho Santa Fe, California: I am very thankful for my gelding Spence, who is there every night when I come home, and he gives me a shoulder to cry on during my divorce.

Off to feed the hungry. We had rain last night, and more is coming on Friday.

    Joe

Hiya, FsOB! I may not be able to log on in the AM, because I have to attend the funeral in MA of a colleague's mother. I just tried to call the White House to express support for the President to issue an Executive Order to stop the anticipated round-up in Calico, but the message said to "call back between 9 AM & 5 PM Eastern Time". Argh!

Alex, thanks for the great news about the plans to open a branch of Old Friends outside of Saratoga, NY. That is awesome and I would think that the location would be ideal.

Wishing all "ACN". I just lit a few candles for Barbaro and the count was at 99; I also lit some for Joan R's Pierre.

    #### To Jane, hoping that there was some good outcome to Skye's appt. yesterday.
To Joan Roya: Sorry that Pierre will need more blood tests. Please let us know how he's doing as the week progresses. We had a dachshund named Beethoven when I was in my teens. He was very cute and loving, but got obese because of the candy that my late Mother would feed him. Dachshunds seem to be very nice dogs; Brent's mother has one. ####

U.S. Government to Study Impact of Horse Slaughter Industry Closure
A new law upholds the ban on American horse slaughter and orders an examination of horse welfare.
    October 29, 2009

The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) will soon be studying the impact of the closure of American equine slaughterhouses. The last American slaughterhouse was closed in 2007.

On October 21, the president signed the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010 (H.R.2997). The primary purpose of the bill is to designate funding for The United States Department of Agriculture and related organizations. The bill, now Public Law 111-80, contains some important points related to horse welfare.

Section 744 continues the prohibition of USDA spending on inspection of horsemeat in the United States. Though there are currently no equine slaughterhouses in the country, this provision would apply if a company moves forward on constructing a new slaughter plant. When American slaughterhouses were operational, the primary market for the product was in parts of Europe and Japan, where horsemeat is an ingredient in some local specialty dishes.

Earlier this year, a Montana law sponsored by Republican Representative Ed Butcher cleared the way for the construction of an equine slaughterhouse in that state. He is currently seeking Chinese investors to operate the facility, though it is uncertain how the meat will be sold legally without USDA inspection as that inspection is required of all meat produced in the United States, regardless of where it is sold.

Furthermore, new European Union laws require any horse sold for human consumption to be identified as "intended for slaughter." This means they must not have been treated with any chemicals, such as dewormers or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or undergo a 180-day quarantine. The new EU law is expected to impact the market for American horses as meat animals.

One of the primary arguments of the pro-slaughter movement is that the closure of horse slaughter plants in the United States has directly contributed toward increased neglect and abandonment of American horses. A senate report accompanying H.R. 2997 directs the GAO to conduct a study on the current state of horse welfare in America as it relates to the end of the domestic slaughter industry. The study will specifically examine how horse welfare, horse rescue organizations, farm industry income, and overall horse sales, imports and exports have been affected by the slaughterhouse closures.

Results of this study are expected by March of 2010.

It's very wild here tonight and promises to continue until morning. The West Country is not having the worst of it though as the storms have travelled northwards and are currently hammering the Lake District, where there has been severe flooding, and Scotland. I hope the various animals out on the moors can find some shelter and avoid some of the raging torrents. The only positive thing is that it is extremely mild as the weather systems are moving up from the balmier southern Atlantic. I hope all is quiet and peaceful in beautiful New England.

    ((((Joan and Pierre))))

Yesterday, a man came in to buy some dog food. He had a chubby dachsund with him, a boy named Posor, black with brown feet, some brown on his ears and snout. There were quite a few people shopping, taking care of biz, etc. I came out of the office and this dachsund looked up at me and became fixated. I went about my business and noticed that he was still fixated on me, moving from behind human legs so he could follow me. It impacted me, so I stared back, eyes to eyes. Before long, I was on the floor with his face in my hands. He stared at me, as if he had something to say. As the owner was leaving, he was pulling the leash as the dog looked back at me intently.

I believe sometimes animals can 'see' what we can't. The next time Posor boards with us you can be sure I'm going to spend time with him.

I simply adore the Starfish Parable.

still no answers on Pierre...and Margie I hope you get that time with the little dachshund soon.

if anyone knows...curious....Peaches is a dapple and Pierre is a long hair double dapple with blue eyes...wondering...from lady at vet's office....double dapple and his genes and the breeding....she said that the breeders try to get these different colors like Pierre and they really mix up the genes, etc.

can you imagine with other animals and horses...Lord...I guess God knew what He was doing when he created all the animals...he made them like they should be...and we mankind...starts messing it up...

    when will mankind learn??

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, thank you for posting the story about Grand Forks. Thank goodness the steward took the action that he did. (I wonder if he is related to a classmate of mine from high school in Louisville, they have the same last name. Small world!)

Fabulous that Michael Blowen is opening a brand of Old Friends in Saratoga, NY. Who knows, maybe Brent & I can make a visit there next Summer. That would be soooo cool. Believe me, the volunteers at Old Friends in Georgetown, KY think the world of the FsOB. I was very touched by their warmth during our visit there in June of 2008.

Wishing all here "ACN". To quote one of Alex's terms, "I am knackered tonight." Peace, Robyn in CT

    #### To Alex: In case Liz hasn't e-mailed you in response to your question, she is Devonshire.
To Liz: I hope that the horses and other animals on the moors stay safe. We've had a lovely stretch of warm weather here in southern New England this week. Kallie will be visiting us from Bar Harbour this weekend.
To Janice in FLA: Hoping that the move preps are going well for you & Denny. Do you have a definite date yet for the move up to PA?
To Joan: I hope that you get a good report from Pierre's vet in response to the blood tests. ####

Hiya, FsOB, it is a dark & rainy Friday dawning here on the banks of the Thames. But TGIF!!! I have to head out early to pick up some goodies for a farewell to two folks who are leaving State service in RI after significant periods of employment. My step-daughter and her beau will be visiting from Bar Harbour this weekend, so I may not be at the Comments Board.

Alex, if your trip to the UK begins this weekend, please have a safe, timely flight and a grand adventure on "the other side of the pond". Thank you again for all you do to keep us informed!

Robyn - Hope you have an enjoyable visit this weekend.

re: move - not 100% sure yet. The potential buyers backed out once, regretted it and came back the next day to say they made a mistake and would we accept their offer again. If this deal goes through, we should be in PA by the very end of December or beginning of January.

    Have a great day everyone!!

Hay Frens, Let's begin the weekend, (I always consider Friday a "weekend day") with a good report:

    From Bloodhorse:

QUALITY ROAD, whose exploits have been followed closely since his traumatic encounter with the starting gate before the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) cleared a major hurdle Wednesday, schooling at Belmont to the satisfaction of trainer Todd Pletcher and starter Bob Duncan.

"Todd and Bob reported that Quality Road did everything very well," said Chris Baker, farm manager for owner Edward Evans. "He went in and out of the gate with the doors open and the doors closed – all good."

Baker said further schooling was scheduled for Thursday morning, with the possibility of shipping the colt to Aqueduct to school over the weekend.

"Starting in a race will be the real test, as the colt has always schooled well in the mornings," Baker said. "Both Todd and Bob are optimistic that we don’t have a long-term problem on our hands at this point in the process."

The important aspect of Wednesday’s schooling was that it showed the incident at Santa Anita apparently has not left any emotional scars as far as the actual gate goes. How Quality Road handles additional stress placed on him in future sessions and how he handles a race atmosphere will determine his future this year as it pertains to the Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile Nov. 28.
    ...............................................

Please keep calling, e-mailing and FAXING. We must not let up...Nay, Frens, we must STEP UP...Have a beautiful weekend.

    Alex,

as Robyn said, I'm in sunny (for the moment) Devon. It is very mild and calm today. It seems the whole country is having a bit of a respite today, but the rain and gales will return for the weekend. There has been rain of "biblical proportions" in Cumbria and the services, including the RSPCA, have been doing sterling work. The racing seems to have survived, but Kauto Star will find it pretty "soft" at Haydock on his seasonal debut tomorrow.

Liz, i'll be passing through, on the train, on Sunday if all goes to plan! Off to Cornwall!

Posted by: alex at November 20, 2009 4:16 PM

Have you been to the *It's a bArbaro CHRISTMAS* yet?

It's a great thread under horse rescues on the db,
    and
    all FOBs need to donate

to make this a success. Just one dollar - one dollar in 8 or less cards.

If 400 of you send one dollar , well that is a nice little present for a horse rescue. It might mean a warm blanket on snowy nights, or vet help when a horse is so sick, or so many good things...

There's strength in numbers - that's the way we've been able to do so much , to help so many horses in need -
let's help them now - they are standing in need, and ... well , it's almost Christmas.

Posted by: BobbieB. at November 20, 2009 5:03 PM

BobbieB, I think there are about 50 people logging on to follow the bArbaro Christmas thread. If it averaged that each person sent EIGHT dollars to the EIGHT rescues, that would easily be $400 for each!!! Some could send more, some less, some not to all eight rescues. But, odds are good it could average out to a super amount if all interested would be able to contribute. One person alone sending a dollar - or EIGHT - might not feel it makes a difference. But you're right, there's strength in numbers. Strength in the FOBs!!!!!!!! I BELIEVE

    ####
Please call, fax, email....ask Pres. Obama to take that pen...and make a signature and save our horses and wild horses.

6 days until Thanksgiving. On the phone our little friend Allison had this to say: I am thankful for Thanksgiving.

Andrea, 26, Washington D.C.: I am thankful for the usual stuff, steady income, family, friends, my thoroughbred gelding, but this year I am really thankful for finding my dog Mugs at a shelter, and I love how when I wake up Mugs is staring at me.

Lynne, almost as old as dirt, Sonora, California: I am thankful I met Barbaro, who has taught me so much about horses, and brought me to meet Mister, my Missouri Foxtrotter boyfriend.

Candi, 17, Sacramento: I am so thankful the public has finally figured out horse racing is cruel and unusual punishment.

Andrea, 19, Texas A&M: I am thankful for Gus, my pony since I was 6, and on Thanksgiving Day Gus will enjoy his traditional apple pie.

Robyn, Elverta, California: I am grateful for being able to know my mare Cheyenne, even though she was only on earth for 9 short years, she changed my life forever.

Deb, 50 something, Sacramento: One sentence can barely contain what I am thankful for, but my blessings include my family, friends, faith, horses, freedom, and job.

Ryan, 17, Carmichael, California: I am very thankful to have a job that lets me be with horses, and I am thankful to my dad because he believes in me.

Amber, 16, Carmichael, California: I am thankful for today, tomorrow, and for our military who die for my freedom.

Betsy, Vacaville, California: I am thankful for Dr. Lisa Wallace and her loving care of my two older geldings who went over the bridge in October, and I am thankful for Jodi for finding me Penny, a new horse to love on.

Maureen, Fairfax, California: I am thankful for my family and friends whom I love dearly, and this includes three dogs and three thoroughbreds.

Katie, 15, Woodland, California: I am most thankful for our troops.

Theresa, Maryland: I am thankful for our 31 year old quarter horse Cocoa.

Valerie, 33, Montreal, Canada: I am thankful the TB racing world is so well documented on the net, it allows me to find all kinds of information on a gelding Hugo, who I love very much at the barn where I take lessons, and I am thankful for my new friend Lydia with whom I share my passion for horses.

April, 13, Minnesota: I am thankful for my best friend Sol, she rocks, and I am thankful for my neighbor Mark, he lets me work at his barn so I can be around horses.

Emma, 60, Fremont, California: I am thankful for my husband, he is without a doubt the most wonderful man I have ever met.

Shannon, 29, Acampo, California: I am thankful to rescue groups who save horses everyday.

Sue, older than Joe, Bolivar, Texas: I am thankful for my friends, all the beauty in the world, and the magic of horses.

Alexis, 12, Sacramento: I am thankful for my 35 year old horse Red who I saved from starving to death, and almost a year later he is doing well.

Liz, 59, San Rafael, California: I am grateful I still have a job, I am grateful for horses who kept me out of trouble when I was a teenager, I am grateful for decent health, and I am grateful my mom is surviving her broken arm and hip replacement, despite the fact that Kaiser dropped her on the floor the day after her surgery.

Sheryl, 48, Annapolis, Maryland: I am thankful to be recovering from colon cancer, and to be spending the holidays with my family, which includes my first grandchild, and my mare.

Carol, ahem ahem, Dixon, California: I am grateful to have such wonderful, caring kids.

Melanie, ugh, Davis, California: I am thankful that my husband and children love me enough to let me foster a horse, and that we were able to pay the bills for this month.

Rose, 55, Provo, Utah: I am thankful my thoroughbred Cal came to me at a time when we both needed each other.

Jessie, 13, Provo, Utah: I am so thankful to live in America.

A good time to stop. Enjoy your rain and wind Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. Roger Miller on the oldies station...

Did you call the President and ask him to save our horses. You should you know, cause you have fingers and the horses have hooves and who dials best?
    Help them out.

My beloved Tarheels are getting the stuffing beat out of them on tv, and the announcer keeps saying the defending champions... the team of champions from last year are mostly all in the NBA.
We are in a rebuilding year and it is going to be painful. very.

One day I will tell you about when I was in labor
and the Tarheels were in a championship playoff.

Thank you for giving to the rescues for our Barbaro's Christmas thingy - it's so important.
    There's an old saying :
In the end, I won't remember the words of my
enemies as much as the silence of my friends.

    ## Major prayers for Pierre - BearBear - all in need. I am trying to get back to "normal" routines after this monumental move back to my ranch. Sooo many frustrations w/hi-speed internet and other large corporations who send bills in a timely manner and provide no service !
AMIGO somehow got out tonite - when it was dark out - and I drove back in truck and several bales of hay and he came running. I was totally freaked. I could have run him over - he could have run out to the street - DO NOT know how he got out - as Jim Gath would say: Good AMIGO !
I KNOW Chico was watching over his brother.
LORDY - be still my heart.
I HOPE computer issues will be sorted out this weekend - I have missed connecting on a regular basis.

Warpaint and Dakota - who are happy 2b home

Sherry , Oh Lordy is right ! I am so glad that ended well. Amigo the Houdini poodle - how did he get out ?
If you think he got out a gate that's one thing, but he may have found a place in a fence, etc., so keep an eye on Mr Copperfield jr until you know , lol. I hope you are enjoying your ranch, (after all the hard moving and settling in is done )

Hugs back at ya , Renee, and prayers for Rocco.

RIP, SOUTHERN HALO. Another bright star taken from our realm...You will join our beloveds and your parents and grandsire, the great NORTHERN DANCER. Something tells me that you will shine in the heavens in the southern sky. Perhaps it will be too far for these eyes to see, but you will not be forgotten.

    From a BH report:

Southern Halo, the most successful sire in Argentine history, died in his paddock at Haras La Quebrada near Buenos Aires from complications from the infirmities of old age, according to Gustavo Gonzalez. The 24-year-old Maryland-bred son of Halo out of the Northern Dancer mare Northern Sea had been pensioned this year.

Southern Halo was Argentina’s leading sire from 1994 to 2000, and in 2004 and 2007. He topped the broodmare sire’s list from 2004 to 2008 and ranks as the current leader. His 167 stakes winners include 56 group/grade I winners and 16 champions.

Southern Halo also stood at John Magnier and partners’ Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., and in Japan. His Kentucky-bred stakes winners include millionaire More Than Ready , who won the King’s Bishop Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga. More Than Ready has achieved success as a stallion in Kentucky and in Australia.

Southern Halo also was represented by major North American winners Miss Linda and Edenwold. An Argentine-bred champion, Miss Linda won the 2001 Overbrook Spinster Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland. Edenwold was voted Canada’s 2005 champion 2-year-old male. He won the following year’s classic Queen’s Plate Stakes.

Bred by E.P. Taylor, Southern Halo went through the 1984 Keeneland July yearling sale, where he was purchased for $600,000 by the Irish branch of the British Bloodstock Agency. He initially raced in Ireland, where he was unplaced in two starts.

Southern Halo won or placed in 15 of 22 races and earned $344,875 in North America for owner Stavros Niarchos while trained by D. Wayne Lukas. Southern Halo’s five stakes-placings included runner-up efforts in the Super Derby (gr. I) and the Swaps Stakes (gr. I).

"I (told) him goodbye the last weekend. He didn’t suffer or feel pain", said Hernan Ceriani Cernadas III, son of the late Hernan Ceriani Cernadas and owner of La Quebrada with his family. "A few days ago, when someone said that Southern Halo was the Sadler’s Wells of Argentina, John Magnier said, 'Southern Halo has joined around him people of the class of Robert Sangster (of Coolmore), E.P. Taylor, D. Wayne Lukas, Hernán Ceriani Cernadas.' "

Southern Halo will be buried at Haras La Quebrada near another North American-bred stallion, Solazo, sire of the second dam of North America’s two-time Horse of the Year Cigar.

    ................................................

Frens, aside from his race and sire record, SOUTHERN HALO's life should be remembered as an example of how good a thoroughbred's life can be. He lived a full lifespan in health and honor. He was loved and will be remembered.

Oh, Lord, would that they all could shine as brightly...as to be cared for and treasured simply for the magnificent creation they are.

    Your FOB Fren, O

PS: Congratulations to Calvin, today, as he is honored by the fans at Churchill Downs.

Our Humane Society is so full with cats that they waived adoption fees for this weekend only, so OF COURSE we had to go. They had over 200 cats to move, and the place was swamped! We were there for over three hours, just going through lines to adopt.

We brought home a very handsome older orange and white kitty. They are all neutered/spayed and of course we gave them a generous donation any way.

Some adopters were turned away, which is a good thing. They were screening all potential adopters.

It was a win/win situation for the homeless kitties as well for the Humane Society.

We love our new kitty and he will have good forever home with us. I am grinning from ear to ear!

Sheryl Crow Asks President Obama & Secretary Salazar to Stop the Assault on America’s Wild Horses and Burros

Actors Ed Harris, Wendie Malick and Over 100 Organizations Demand Roundup Moratorium, Protesting Nevada’s Calico Complex Roundup to begin December 1.

CHICAGO, (EWA) – Sheryl Crow speaks out for the wild horses and burros on America’s public lands in the west. The multi-GRAMMY®-winning singer-songwriter and mustang owner joins The Cloud Foundation, over 130 organizations, scientists, authors and celebrity supporters calling on President Obama, Members of Congress and the Department of Interior to place an immediate moratorium on all wild horse and burro roundups until a long-term and humane policy to manage the animals is developed.

“With one voice we are insisting that our government stop managing these beautiful and important animals to extinction” —Sheryl Crow

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) removal plan for Nevada’s Calico Complex wild mustangs is fueling outrage across the country and internationally. In a unified sign-on letter, wild horse supporters outline their opposition to the Obama Administration's October 7, 2009 announcement regarding the management of wild horses and burros. Groups oppose moving 26,000 wild horses to purchased lands in the east and the current government practice of removing entire wild horse and burros herds from public lands specifically designated for the animals by Congress in 1971.

“We ask that President Obama or Secretary Salazar cease all BLM roundups as of this date to prevent further suffering. We request that the government and BLM begin to work in good faith with wild horse advocates for a sustainable solution. The Calico Roundup, scheduled to begin in December and continue through the dead of winter, is inhumane and must be stopped!” —Sheryl Crow

Upon hearing about the BLM’s plans for the large-scale removal of 2,500 horses in northwest Nevada near the Black Rock Desert, more than seven thousand citizens submitted public comments to the BLM opposing the Calico Mountain Complex Round Up, scheduled to begin on December 1, 2009. Public comment has been extended through November 22, 2009 according to the BLM.

Currently more than 33,000 wild horses are stockpiled in government holding facilities at a cost to taxpayers of $100,000 a day. The scheduled removal of 2,500 from Nevada will bring that total to more than 35,000.

“We already have enough wild horses in pens. Adding more horses to those already held in confinement, when they are much safer on the range is shortsighted, inhumane and fiscally irresponsible.” —Ginger Kathrens, Emmy Award Filmmaker & Volunteer Executive Director of the Cloud Foundation.

The BLM will pay the private contractor $610 per horse rounded up for an estimated total of nearly $2 million for the Calico roundup alone according to BLM spokesperson, Tom Gorey. Branding, vaccinating, sterilizing and processing of horses to be placed in government holding will cost several million more. The BLM hired the same contractor for the controversial roundup of the famous stallion, Cloud, and his Pryor Mountain herd in September, 2009. Bands including two-month-old foals were chased down off the mountaintop by helicopter for 10-15 miles in more than 90 degree heat resulting in trauma and lameness.

"The government is acting in defiance of the spirit and intent of the 1971 Free Roaming Wild Horses and Burros Act (1971 Act) which Congress passed unanimously —Julianne French, wild horse advocate.

The 1971 Act preserves wild horses and burros in over 300 areas of publicly owned rangeland in the west, forbidding their exploitation, harassment and removal. Regardless, only 30 million acres remain of the 54 million acres designated primarily for wild horse use in 1971. Over 100 herds have been completely removed by the BLM and most remaining herds are too small to insure their long-term survival. The BLM's current policy of eradicating these herds is a betrayal of the wishes of the American public.

Sheryl Crow, with wild mustang and burro supporters, calls the public to action urging all to write, e-mail, fax and phone Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, their congressional representatives and President Obama. The list of contact phones, e-mails, faxes and mailing addresses is online here.

“It's time for all of us to speak up for our Wild Horses and Burros so we do not lose these living legends and inspiring symbols of our freedom in America.” —Sheryl Crow

    Hello sweet bArbaro Famblee:

Thirty five (35) years ago was born in a lovely Victorian mansion on the lovely old shore of one of the five Fingerlakes in NY, Finnegan of Ingleside: my very first OWN NOT LIVING AT HOME dog.

He taught me perseverence, he taught me how to REALLY love, how to survive grief, how to find the best Vet in NY, and how to get over having the corners chewed off tables.

He was third generation American Irish Wolfhound. His Irish-imported grandmother Tara, was a huge, long, wheaten bitch of inpeccable breeding and temperament.

I first glimpsed her at one of our huge local dog shows, being lead to a junior handling class by her co-owner, 7-year old Jilly Karpinski--whose head was almost even with Tara's elegant profile.

I was bewitched...I followed them around all day. Jill's mom, Jacky let me borrow me a stack of rare books on the IW and thus began a 25 year+ obsession

It's a very long and lovely story lasting sadly--as with most IW's stories--8 years, and ending with The Monster.

In the meanwhile, I showed him to his American Championship quickly, falling flat on my face in our first foray into the show ring, and the very kind, elegant, elderly Mr. Stevensen, slowly approached me down the long mat and asked in a very soft voice, "Would you like to try that again?"

Finnegan made me survive a divorce, a job loss, god knows what else. And although I have been blessed with many, many dogs in my heart, Finn's birth and death dates are engraved. Such a brief and fantastic love-affair.

My dad, at 91, worries that Finn will not be there to walk him into Heaven when Jack passes. I have assured him that any hound who would endlessly play Kill the Deer with a grown man in our huge fenced yard, will be waiting for him.

Thank you dear Jacky and Genie and Tara and Ceol and Finn for beginning my long love affair with tall hounds...

Back up to Mall of you know the rest for 4 hours today. Unruly children all about yesterday, so we will do an abbreviated outreach again today.

Yesterday, one of our very happy adopters--who have brother GHs--gave me a check for $500 to help us out. Every year they donate something...amount depending on how good THEIR year was....and I always cry and I always think, ---if only adoptees of anything--dog, cat, horse--would remember thier companion animal's
birth, death, "Gotcha Date:" with a little donation...life would be so much more secure for all of us who constantly fight the money battles.

With love to my Frens and Famblee

    Good Sunday, Frens:

It looks as thought Saturday was a dark day at Hollywood Park. Here is a BH report on a tragedy:

Jockey Garrett Gomez was taken to Centinela Hospital for X-rays on his shoulder and elbow after the horse he was riding in the ninth race at Hollywood Park Nov. 21 broke down while leading at the sixteenth pole.

BONNIE BROWN EYES, a 2-year-old filly making her second lifetime start in the $32,000 maiden claiming race for trainer Mike Mitchell, shattered her right front ankle and died when she broke her neck in the fall, according to Hollywood Park spokesman Mike Mooney. She led the six-furlong race by 1 1/2 lengths at the eighth pole.

Gomez was able to roll under the rail after he was thrown and appeared to escape being struck by any of the eight trailing horses. He was loaded onto the hospital ambulance by stretcher.

    ................................................

I'm sure that we all will join in prayer and best wishes for a full recovery for Garret Gomez.

I am also sure that we, in one heart, say RIP to poor little BONNIE BROWN EYES.

Fly now, Dear Girl; first born of your momma's two babies. You ran leading all the others in the stretch, with Garret urging you on. It would have been a fine victory for your second time out. Your grandsires would be so proud.

Your people will miss you. You are remembered with honor. See that big bay with the tornado shaped star and charming white snip, walking up to touch noses? He will show you all of the peaceful beauty of you new home.

    Monday, November 23rd...

Sands Of Time, we call him Sandy, and Salvino, we call him Sal, are best of buddies. Forever side by side. If one comes to the barn to see a farrier, or for general maintenance, the other screams while pacing the fence. Sandy and Sal eat together, sleep together, and flirt with young fillies together.

On August 30, 2007, at Bay Meadows race track. Sands Of Time and Salvino were in the same race. Sandy won, and right behind him, Salvino finished second.

I wonder, more than two years later and now retired to our fields, if Sandy and Sal remember racing against each other? Does Sandy tease Sal about winning? Does Sal ask for a rematch?

And does the old guy inside the house have anything better to write about?

Yep. Thankful sentences. 3 days until Thanksgiving.

Cheryl, 58, Palm Desert, California: I am thankful for the opportunity to save 6 horses, and for my family that supports me in this journey.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd, as well as to Cloud's Herd, too . . . for you know you take me to where angels walk!
As our Angel DEE says, "It is AFFIRMED!"
    Indeed it is.

I am "paws"-itively zooming here to finish an assignment, but just had to peek in for a moment.

Traffic is already picking up on the main routes and so I do wish and pray for safe travels for any of you traveling.

Thought of you all on Saturday!! I took my little rosebud paisana mama (who is not entirely as innocent as she looks by the way, ha) along for a ride to Blue Ball, PA, which is northeast of Lancaster. When I pulled into the parking lot of my destination, it was completely packed, but upon heading to the "overflow" area didn't I find a handily available parking space right next to an Amish buggy and beautiful dark chestnut horse. The horse was not even tethered to the post available for same, and he/she appeared to be napping :).
We noted quite a few businesses and some private homes in the area with welcome signs out for buggy horses noting they have a fresh water supply available for the horses to get refreshing drinks and a pause.
I say a very nice way of "practicing random acts of kindness"!

    Must zoom!

Prayers and hugs for all XXX.

And always IN LOVING MEMORY OF FOB CHIEF!

    always, Lou Ann

To all FOB's who had written about Skye, my golden girl with lymphoblastic leukemia, she crossed today at 12 noon........ in life, she was never any trouble, and she died with as little trouble as possible. A beautiful, sweet, blond girl, who boldly finished her Championship at 7 years of age after four lovely litters, almost unheard of in the dog show world, diagnosed less than two weeks ago and now gone from my sight but always in my heart, she is no more than a memory away. Dee, if you can wish her a Rainbow, it would be wonderful. She now joins BeBe, Lukas, Riley and Darcy at the Bridge and waits for me.

Hiya, FsOB! May Summer Bird be victorious in his race in Japan. I think that he and Mine That Bird are really cute - I love their colouring.

Good Lord, I read the bluelinked story about Grand Forks. Apparently someone on that blog considers us to be anti-racing "deranged women" - obviously a sexist individual who doesn't know how many visitors to this site, males & females, follow TB racing and also make contributions to laminitis research, TB retirement facilities, et cetera. It makes me smile to think how CJ might have responded.

    Wishing everyone "ACN". Peace, Robyn

    Hay, everybody...

Have been away from comments - because I've been driving all over God's creation (OK, NYC and Fair Hill) and I have more driving tomorrow and Sunday, possibly Friday as well. I'm so tired...and Route 95 is such a bear to drive no matter where the destination.

Chanting with KD last Thursday was...bliss. Total bliss. That man is such a gift and my heart keeps opening.

Had lunch with Mike Rea yesterday in Newark. He's doing so well. It was good food and good company. Hopefully he'll be back in NYC on New Years Day for an all-day chant at a friend's yoga studio.

Jane, am so saddened to read about Skye...my love and prayers to her gentle spirit and comfort to you and your family. She is never far from you now.

    *************************************************
    Dear Supporters,

Despite a significant public outcry, BLM plans a helicopter round up to
remove thousands of wild horses in northwestern Nevada, an area called
the Calico Complex in a remote and starkly beautiful landscape of
volcanic outcrops, steep canyons and wide valleys. It is home to over
3,000 wild horses and represents the last stronghold of the once large
herds of American mustangs that roamed the west by the millions.

The attack on Calico is scheduled to begin in December and continue
through the dead of winter. Calico is a challenging environment in
winter when bitter winds howl and blizzards are common. If BLM were
truly interested in preserving wild horses they would not run them over
treacherous terrain in winter when all wildlife are simply trying to
survive by expending the least amount of energy possible.

Regardless, BLM intends to round up from 2486 to 2747 mustangs, taking
away from them what they value most. . .their freedom and the families.
They plan to release only 264 horses (80 mares, all treated with
infertility drugs, and 184 stallions) back onto 1.5 million acres of our
public lands, and incarcerate the rest in holding facilities already
bursting at the seams. Taxpayers pay over $100,000 a day to feed these
captives who were removed to make room for more welfare cattle on public
lands. Because only 264 wild horses will be turned back into four herd
areas, each herd will be genetically non-viable and left vulnerable to
    inbreeding.

A spokesman for BLM denies that the agency is managing our wild herds to
extinction, but actions speak louder than this hollow promise. Only
token, remnant herds will remain in this, the last stronghold of the
wild horses. The onslaught is scheduled to begin December 1 and continue
through the end of February 2010.

The Cloud Foundation is asking you to stand up for these horse and
demand that the round up be halted. It is nothing more than government
    sponsored cruelty.

Call (202) 224-3121 and email your Congressional Representatives

    Nevada Mustangs Given 28-Day Reprieve

IDA Lawsuit Postpones Huge Wild Horse Roundup

Washington, DC (November 24, 2009) - The U.S. Department of Justice announced tonight that the massive roundup and removal of thousands of horses from public land in northwestern Nevada will be delayed until December 28 as a direct result of the filing of a lawsuit by In Defense of Animals and renowned ecologist Craig Downer on November 23.

Tomorrow, IDA and Mr. Downer plan to file a motion for a permanent injunction, with supporting affidavits from horse experts and eyewitnesses to Bureau of Land Management (BLM) roundups. The motion will ask Judge Paul L. Friedman of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to stop the roundup altogether.

The roundup and removal of 80-90 percent of the estimated 3,055 wild horses living in the BLM's Calico Mountain Complex was originally scheduled to begin December 1. The BLM has received over 10,000 public comments in opposition to the roundup.

"We welcome this moratorium on the capture and inhumane treatment of the Calico horses," said William Spriggs, Esq. of Buchanan, Ingersoll and Rooney, pro bono attorney for IDA and Mr. Downer. "The BLM plan for a massive helicopter roundup of these horses is entirely illegal."

"We are confident that the court will agree that America's wild horses are protected by law from BLM’s plan to indiscriminately chase and stampede them into corrals for indeterminate warehousing away from their established habitat," he said. "The magnificent wild horses and burros of the American West are an important part of our national heritage and must be preserved."

The Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act, passed unanimously by Congress in 1971, designated America's wild horses and burros as "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West," specifying they "shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death … [and that] to accomplish this they are to be considered in the area where presently found, as an integral part of the natural system of public lands.”

Since 1971, the BLM has removed over 270,000 horses from their Western home ranges and taken away nearly 20 million acres of wild horse habitat. Only 37,000 wild horses and burros remain on public lands in the West. By contrast, millions of cattle graze our public lands. Thirty-two thousand wild horses who have been removed from the range are already held in government holding facilities, and the BLM intends to round up 12,000 more horses in FY 2010.

It is within the Love that you had for eachother. It is beyond the horror of unexpected tragedy. It is untouched by the agony of second guessing difficult decision.

Happy Thanksgiving to the very best FAMBLEE on earth, and Happy Thanksgiving to all our beloveds, two- and four-legged already in Heaven!

I am forever grateful for and love and cherish each and every one of you!!

And especially always grateful to you, ALEX, for it was you who made it possible for us to come together for and always forever for Barbaro and carrying on his legacy!

I hope each of you are having a most special day and safe on the roads for those traveling near and far.
And prayers and hugs forever for those especially walking the rugged paths of the valleys at this time, those who are especially missing loved ones this first Thanksgiving without them here on earth.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd, and to Cloud's Herd, for you know you take me to where angels walk!
As our Angel Dee says, "It is AFFIRMED!"
    Indeed it is.

My cute little senior paisana mama made enough lasagne with meatballs and sauce (she makes it all from scratch) last evening - I think we could have fed the Barbaro Nation!! (Several containers went into the freezer for later.) Since my beloved "Daddy" passed on to Heaven just four months to the day following Barbaro (2007), Mom prefers to have our T-meal Wednesday evening instead. So today is just a quiet day for reflection and thinking of you all.

He will be ridden by J Lescano (don't know him...hope he has good sense and good hands).

Edgar will be riding #8, a horse named UPGRADE.

Let's pray for a safe trip for all...Oh Lord God, please keep them safe, (but a win by LENTINOR, even against Edgar on #8 would just be so-o-o-o sweet.) Thank you, Heavenly Father, for the glory of your magnificent creation. We appreciate them so.

Go Dear One...Run well, and come back to us.

    Friday, November 27th...

The thing about ranches from other states dumping their horses in California, is beyond perplexing. Owners happily accepting $40.00 for each horse, and acting as if they just won Super Lotto.

Quarter horse ranches from Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah. Bringing their horses to Turlock, Pittsburgh, and Wilton. Horse killers fattening their wallets. It is a jungle out there.

Not to be depressing on the day after Thanksgiving, but Houston we have a problem. Horses from other states adding to our regular mix... race horses, rodeo horses, abandoned horses, a rescue ranch out of business, and horses advertised by private owners for one dollar on the internet. This past Tuesday at the feed lot in Wilton, shoulder to shoulder, hock to hock.

And there was music coming from the trailer. Old stuff by Roberta Flack, and if you know the song about the first time seeing your face, then you can understand how ironic, with horses hanging their heads over pipe fencing. Some faces hopeful, some accepting their fate.

It takes a kid with a thankful sentence to help lighten the load. Several hundred late thankful sentences which I am unable to show.

Melanie, 14, Colorado Springs, Colorado: Not a great year for my family, not a great year for most of my friends, but I am thankful for the chance to be here, to make a difference, and I am thankful to horses for giving me confidence.

Oh yeah. If you list the positives from horses, confidence has to be number one. Keep on keeping on, or something like that.

Hope not everyone's family went nuclear on T-Giving...so inspiring.

SO many without. You would think--major concept: THOUGHT--gratitude and compassion would be top of the list...but: oh, well.

I love my FAMBLEE. I chose them. They chose me. THAT--imho--is my true FAMILY.

Sorry: just the way it is.

    SATURDAY JOE
    **************************************************

    Saturday, November 28th...

Paradise Cove, we called him Dice, was adopted by Kaylee, who came to us because Rachel told her to. Kaylee had been looking for a jumping prospect, and Rachel said you should visit Tbfriends.

In October Kaylee and Dice were at a horse show, and event trainer Nicole asked Kaylee, do you want to sell Dice? Kaylee said no. The next day Nicole made an offer Kaylee could hardly refuse. Big time money, and Dice changed barns.

Nicole wanted to know, where did Dice come from? Kaylee told her Tbfriends in Woodland. Go north on Interstate 5 until you reach Costco, where you can usually find the old guy Joe waiting for free samples.

On the phone Nicole introduces herself, and says she has a client looking for a horse. Can she and the client come take a look?

The client is Emma, only 13, and she goes home with her very first horse. A gelding we call Beaches, who moves better than Donny on that dancing show.

About a week later Emma phones and says her best friend forever, Taylor, might also be looking for a thoroughbred. Taylor and her parents would like to visit on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, just to window shop mostly, but hey you never know.

Taylor spots Soda, a gelding we bought in August from a mexican rodeo dealer. Soda came to us sore and skinny, and we were never quite sure of his breed. Maybe a thoroughbred, maybe a little of this and that.

Taylor asks can she ride Soda and I said okay, even though we had yet to saddle him. In less than 3 months he has gained 150 pounds. Always easy to catch in our fields.

Well you can tell right off Taylor is in love. Under saddle Soda is quiet and willing. Her parents say thank you for your time, Happy Thanksgiving, and how about those San Diego Chargers?

Yesterday Taylor phones and screams in my ear, I can have Soda, I can have Soda. His new home a fancy boarding stable near Del Mar. Transportation has been arranged, and Soda leaves us on Monday.

All of this, because Rachel once told Kaylee she should visit Tbfriends. And because Paradise Cove can jump over the moon.

Enjoy your cold and windy Saturday, and be sure to hug your horses. Bryan Adams on the radio...

    Joe

Hoo-Rah!!! Our sweet LENTINOR did well, and had a safe trip today. As far as I know, with all of the races run, there has not been occasion to grieve as the days steps into evening.

My chores are done. Now, to sit and write about THISGOODPLACE. I waited all week, for the luxury of the time to do so. Thank you, BARBARO for the treasure of this new passion. I'll post a sample here, just because...for you my Frens, and for Frens DebbieLA, and BobbieB. (Bobbie B, where are you today, my Dear?):

A glimpse into the latest chronicled moments:
    .................................................

At the water's edge, the reeds clacked in the breeze. The cool stream rushed around their roots and tumbled over the stones. The reeds were a thick stand that lined the bank across the stream from the fern meadow. Cattails also claimed the bank. Red-winged black birds rode them like broncos as they nodded and swayed. Dragon-flies hovered above the sand, whispering secrets to the stones, to each other, and to anyone else who might listen. With their tiny feet, they plucked flakes of gold from the tips of the wavelets and carried them off into the air, and out of sight.

One bold one flew up around the Young Prince's ears. He heard the the faint buzzing of her wings, and turned his head to see her. She quickly darted away, only to double back and buzz him from the other direction. She did this a few times as Brume watched with great amusement. The Young Prince tried hard to anticipate from which direction she would next appear. However, she was always one turn ahead of him. Then, she began to fly her pattern in reverse. The Young Prince caught on and whirled around to meet her. She stopped short at his right eye, hovering within inches of his face. She tipped her face from side to side, looking deeply into the right eye of the Young Prince. He, in turn looked closely at her. Her iridescent wings blurred a halo around her head. Her long thin body flexed in firm suspension. She held a delicate flake of gold with her feet. The Young Prince thought that he perceived a frenly smile stretch across her minute mandibles. She was very close. He held still and was not afraid, for in her eyes he saw hundreds of tiny horses looking back at him.

"Good game...good game!" he heard her say. Her voice was a thin, high, buzz inside of a whine and a whisper.

"You are wise. You fig-it out. Tee-hee... This gleam for you. You are prince! You are Sky Lighter."

She buzzed around his nose then deposited her flake of treasure at the corner of his mouth. He licked his lips, and the gold was gone.

"Tee hee...fig-it out...good game..good game!" And then she flew a short way off and landed on a leaf. The Young Prince followed. Just as he came near she would fly away again, luring him, as it were, step by step, stop by stop, closer to the stream.

Brume followed along, slowly ambling to the water, As he went, he pulled juicy mouthfuls of clover and mint.

The dragon-fly landed upon a rock just a few inches into the stream.

"Look, good game...Look the for gleam. All is made of gleam...to see...to hear....to know...to be."

She skimmed another sparkling bit from the ripples, flew close to the face of the Young Prince, then hovered again above the rock. The Young Prince carefully put his nose down near the rock in the water. He looked to see 'gleam,' and noticed that the sparkles in the water were indeed, gleaming flakes of gold, and silver, and quartz. He saw the reflection of the blue sky as bits of lapis, aquamarine, agate, saffire and zircon. More colors swirled around in the churning mix. Green flakes of jade and malachite, also nuggets of peridot painted the scene as reflections of the reeds. The sparkling particles danced about, each unique and separate in the small scope of this intimate focus.

He saw a dark shape ever so close to surface of the water. It pulled brown and black flakes of jasper, quartz, topaz, citrine, and onyx, up from the sandy stream bed. Within those warm dark tones, shimmered a small white patch of opal. The shape moved when he moved, got smaller when he moved away, and larger when he moved close to the water. He had seen it before, but never as these flakes... these fascinating sparkling pixels.

Then another dark shape loomed. The Young Prince almost startled, but then he saw that the large looming shape rose slowly, in a non-threatening manner, to greet his fren Brum, who had come to the water's edge. The other shape gently touched Brume's nose. It too was made of flakes in the brown spectrum, but there also appeared for Brume, white bits of moonstone, quartz, and mother-of-pearl.

Brume put his lips to the water and sucked in a few cold gulps. He was oblivious to the colorful flakes of precious metals and stone. He did not see the looming image. All he saw was the sparkling stream. As Brume drank, the Young Prince too, thought to take a few sips. The water tasted good.

The dragon-fly hummed and tee hee'd, flitting from stone to stone. She snatched a small flake of gold from the delicate spray that splashed up as the stream skimmed over the stones. She flew with her treasure, over the reeds, up and out of sight.
    ..................................................

Sweet dreams, Dear Frens...It has been a good day.

Summer Bird, winner of the grade I Belmont Stakes, Travers, and Jockey Club Gold Cup, was withdrawn from the Dec. 6 Japan Cup Dirt after suffering an injury in a workout. at Hanshin Race Course.

According to owner Dr. K.K. Jayaraman, the son of Birdstone came back from his work Nov. 29 showing signs of lameness.

“Tim (trainer Ice) called me and told me what happened and that X-rays had revealed a small chip in the right carpal fetlock joint,” Jayaraman said. “It’s only the size of a pea, but he’s obviously out of the race.

“We will bring him back home in a couple of days and send him to one of the farms in Lexington, Ky. where we board our horses. After we find out more, we will make a decision whether we remove the chip and try to bring him back or retire him.”

Summer Bird’s most recent effort was a solid fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I), in which he was beaten three lengths by Zenyatta.

Wow. The biggest headlines are how much shopping was done over the past few days. This drone reporting leaves me without words. Nothing wrong with shopping. I'd like to do more! But aren't there much more important issues for the news people?

Hope everyone had a good holiday. 2 of us have been taking care of 81 dogs and 9 cats all weekend. For a moment, I thought of cooking a turkey and giving each furry child a taste. But the owners may not like it. They can be persnickety at times.

Trip, the last Saluki rescue, has a home in Phoenix waiting for him. But he won't be released until his blood issue is resolved. Hopefully, by the end of this week. People at Cornell are trying to find a solution, and what exactly is causing the thinning of his artery walls. They are focusing on tics, and his past coyote hunting 'career' in Texas.

May God Bless this Famblee and all animals.

Dear Fren Lynn, I am around and reading, but not posting much -- am on vacation and using a pc, which I constantly lose my post on. I hit the wrong keys on this keyboard ! Thank you so much for the dragonfly and the Prince story - it was enchanting.

Margie , so happy for Trip and hope his blood probs are resolved soon. Maybe he will be with a loving famblee at Christmas.

Summer Bird -- what can you say ? It took my breath away reading a cannon bone , but then a bone chip is a little better. He was growing in experience and stature in each race, and I am so sorry he is injured. Best wishes to him and his connections.

    Sunday, November 29th...

It must be these crazy winds. Took forever to find the internet this morning. Cold winds have been knocking us around the last 36 hours. I found a nice work glove clinging to our north fence. Also an old torn sock. And a paper plate, with what smells like barbecue sauce.

Feeding fields almost impossible. Alfalfa goes airbourne, landing two blocks away, providing California happy cows with a special treat. Old mares come to our yard for a decent meal. Feeding mares behind our garage gives shelter from the wind. A chance to wipe their eyes. Ask how are things going? And did you hear, they might make a new Black Beauty movie.

So my regular stuff will have to wait, until the winds quit and I have a stable internet. I can tell you there are horses at every race track in California hoping for a stall or pen to become available at Tbfriends. I can tell you about crowded feed lots in Wilton and Pittsburgh. Rumors of a crowded feed lot in Santa Rosa. Dozens of private owner horses needing new homes. And a thoroughbred breeding farm giving away both youngsters and mares. Tough times in the world of horses.

For now, on this still dark and windy Sunday morning, please not another turkey sandwich, how about a bowl of Wheat Chex? Later could be 57 degrees. A walk outside, if only to make sure our ranch is still here. Radio (below top left) is 6 months old, and he was scheduled to be weaned this weekend. But winds are in charge, so we are going to wait a few days. His mom Zoe thinking to herself, oh darn.

I will be back tomorrow. Going to go check fences, to see if the other nice glove has shown up.
