    Barbaro Updates: 979

    updates are now here.

Update 5796: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

While Zenyatta's historic win in the Classic seems to eclipse the rest of the two-day event, there were many other interesting storylines - each race stood out in its own way this year.

    Marathon
What a fascinating result - nine-year-old Cloudy's Knight very nearly got there to be the oldest Breeders' Cup winner on record (and jockey Rosemary Homeister, Jr. would have been only the second female jockey to win a Breeders' Cup race), but he was run down by three-year-old Man of Iron. The Aiden O'Brien trainee was actually sold just before the race and will be moving to Luca Cumani's barn, but he proved yet again that like his half-siblings, Rags to Riches and Jazil, his dam's offspring like to run as long as possible. He will aim for the Dubai Carnival races next. Last year's winner, Muhannak, was no factor this year, but he also changed hands and will remain in California under the tutelage of Ben Cecil. Man of Iron was the only Ballydoyle horse who ran on Lasix - and their only winner this year.

    Juvenile Fillies Turf
Tapitsfly rewarded her backers, professionally taking on Rose Catherine in the stretch. Favored Lillie Langtry came out of the race with a slab fracture, but she should be back after some minor surgery and time off. Tapitsfly gave trainer Dale Romans his first Breeders' Cup victory - and so far American-based runners are two-for-two in this turf event.

    Juvenile Fillies
She Be Wild proved she enjoys running on synthetics, but she and the other top two finishes, Beautician and Blind Luck, will all be aiming for the Kentucky Oaks on conventional dirt. Both the runner-up and third-place finishers had some bad luck during the race, as did wiseguy favorite Biofuel, who got pretty knocked around - luckily, all seemed to have only minor complaints and a few of them may run again before the year is out.

    Filly & Mare Turf
Legendary trainer Henry Cecil scored his first Breeders' Cup win when Midday took the Filly & Mare Turf - and perhaps she will be back to defend her title, as the plan is for her to remain in training next year. It's an exciting possibility.

    Filly & Mare Sprint
Informed Decision gave jockey Julien Leparoux his second Breeders' Cup weekend win; as expected, it came down to a dogfight between the winner and top-class mare Ventura. We should see Informed Decision next year as well.

    Filly & Mare Classic
Without stablemate Zenyatta to waltz past her in the closing strides, Life is Sweet finally had a chance to demonstrate her class - and trainer John Shirreffs plenty of confidence going in to Saturday's races.

    Juvenile Turf
The first Breeders' Cup race on Saturday's card went to Pounced; the American-bred, European-based colt had the always-welcome piloting services of Frankie Dettori. Trainer John Gosden (who was based at Santa Anita for many years) snagged his second victory in this race, having won last year with Donativum.

    Turf Sprint
California Flag, who had given himself an impromptu workout before the race, proved he suffered from no ill-effects from his adventure. Joe Talamo secured his first Breeders' Cup win aboard the California-bred speedball, with 'other' filly Gotta Have Her getting up for second (the well-traveled Diamondrella didn't fire on Saturday).

    Sprint
Dancing in Silks scored a major upset - and made trainer Carla Gaines the third woman to train a Breeders' Cup winner in the process. All the 'big names' finished off the board, with Gayego getting closest in fourth. Favorites Zensational and Fatal Bullet finished near each other in fifth and sixth, and global star Fleeting Spirit did not seem to take to the surface. It was a fantastic race for longshot bettors!

    Juvenile
Upset winner Vale of York gave up-and-coming Godolphin jockey Ahmed Ajtebi his first Breeders' Cup win. The horse may be pointed to the Kentucky Derby, but he'd be working against history by prepping in Dubai. Bob Baffert trainee Lookin at Lucky was not terribly lucky in the race, but he still finished a respectable second - and seems a more likely Derby contender.

    Mile
Goldikova continued to display her brilliance - matching the great Miesque's back-to-back Mile wins, and she did so by overcoming a difficult post position and not the easiest trip in this year's installment. It caps a year in which she's been (mostly) beating up on the world's best milers and it means she now has seven G1 wins. The suggestion that she could come back next year to aim for a third Mile win was not immediately ruled out - let's hope it happens. For those who may grumble that it seems unfair to give an Eclipse award to a horse who has made a single US appearance this year, I'd say that's true - unless it's Goldikova.

    Dirt Mile
Mastercraftsman was billed as unbeatable, but obviously no one told longshot Furthest Land. Followed closely on by perpetual maiden Ready's Echo and Midshipman, Furthest Land gave Julien Leparoux his third win for this year's Breeders' Cup. And Mastercraftsman? He's retired.

    Turf
Another repeat - Conduit did it again. What was perhaps almost as exciting was Presious Passion's gutsy effort for second in the race - running off like a sprinter at the beginning, yet still managing to get a big slice of the purse. Dar Re Mi also ran a good race for third (overcoming some considerable traffic trouble), and we could see her again next year. Conduit will now retire to stud in Japan, and it's possible Presious Passion may also head to Asia - but in his case he'd be going to Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Vase.

    Classic
Did Rip Van Winkle's feet bother him? Perhaps. But even if he had been in top form, it's difficult to imagine anyone having beaten Zenyatta on the day, as she was perfection incarnate. It's easy to overlook the quality efforts put in by both Gio Ponti in second and Twice Over in third, but neither had any sort of chance against the giant mare. Poor Einstein had to check behind the slowing Rip Van Winkle, which essentially took him out of the race, and Summer Bird did not have the best luck but still managed to be a closing fourth. But it was really all Zenyatta - and while the Horse of the Year discussions will go on, they really don't matter; she's one of the greatest, and that's all anyone will remember.

Update 5795: An easy morning this morning for Steve at Woodbine. I only had five to gallop, and all easy gallops. All galloped nicely too. Just a very short and straightforward morning's work, ahead of a pretty busy day.

Now off to OLEX from where I will tweet.

Update 5794: This week's ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Tweet this: OLEX, Elora, Proton Station, ABR radio, Woodbine flyer, 2,500 members, Steve Hiatt, Henry Cecil and Midday, Life is Sweet and John Shirreffs, Goldikova, Zenyatta, Zenyatta, Zenyatta.

    And please keep calling.

    Hey Alex:

Thanks for all you do. I hope we can keep the db's. I guess a final decision hasn't been reached yet about this site. I just wanted to take a moment and thank you once again.

Hey Alex! Loved what you wrote about Zenyatta. One of the best reviews of the race yet. I'm still so excited about it...have watched it at least ten times. Just wondering, why were only two of the horses RA faced in the Classic? Was it because of the surface? I noticed no one from the Woodward was there. The announcer for ESPN said it was the "deepest field in racing this year." Do you agree? If so, my vote is for Zenyatta for HOY, even though I love Rachel, I haven't screamed like that ever during a race. I'll never forget what it felt like to watch her win.

A beautiful home in Las Vegas, and shipping takes place this weekend. Both King and Queen are 3 years old. Our vet Lisa comes today for coggins. Our horse hauler Monica provides transportation.

Also finding a new home, the gray gelding Siberian. He leaves tomorrow for Oroville, with horse hauler Angela providing transportation.

On Saturday California Flag won the Breeders Cup sprint. Coming to us soon an autographed win photo. California Flag will sign his own picture. Also a bunch of other things, maybe even his shoe. We know a kid who loves this stuff.

Lots of changes coming up for Tbfriends. Including the non profit route. Each day an adventure. I must keep notes to stay on top of things.

Every penny from sales of Say Hey Doll goes directly to help horses. If Say Hey Doll is a success, two other books will be published. Say Hey Doll should be available for purchase by March or April.

And now your morning cup of plea. Crowded feed lots. Race horses. Rodeo horses. Private owner horses. Two rescue ranches out of business. A pregnant thoroughbred mare. If you have room for another horse, give me a call at 530-383-2120. We can help with transportation.

Enjoy your Kings have won two in a row Monday, and be sure to hug your horses. Delicious hot coffee from Peets. Microwave waffles made by Eggo. Later could be 64 degrees. Still dark outside, with hungry horses beginning to make noise. Earth Wind & Fire on the oldies station...

    ***************************************************
Tuesday, November 10th... Thanksgiving only two weeks away, and it seems this year more than ever we need to stop for a moment and smell the coffee.

The following I know to be true, because I asked.

Sara, age 13, in Vacaville: I am most thankful for my mom, who teaches me courage.

Tori in Fairfield: I am thankful for my horse Henry, my boyfriend Tim, and I am thankful I still have a job.

Allison, age 13, Woodland: I am thankful God put horses on earth.

Morgan, 14, Orangevale: I am thankful for my Uncle Ron who paid for my braces.

Jennifer, 20s, Elk Grove: I am thankful for my best friend Whiz, who I found at the auction in Roseville. Little did I know how much we needed each other.

Angela, 20s, Sacramento: I am thankful for each day.

Noelle, 18, Citrus Heights: I am so very thankful for Glenn and Stacey, who allow me to board at their barn in exchange for chores.

Daniel, 12, Woodland: I am thankful for my mom who drives me an hour each way for my riding lesson.

One thing I have learned in more than 4 years of this website. You love to hear from other readers.

So send me one sentence. Please just one. You can give your age, but for sure I need your name and where you live. In that one sentence, tell us what you are most thankful for. Our e-mail tbfriends@aol

In the next two weeks I will do my best to post your sentence.

Alex: I, too, very much enjoyed reading this morning your words on Zenyatta and her race...and everyone here knows how little I know of racing, probably most ESPECIALLY you! But I agree wholheartedly with everything you wrote! She was so far behind, she was practically in the previous race for Hevvin's Sakes! And WOW!

Debbie LA: Sorry about all the rain..glad for not much wind..hopefully, your area won't see any flooding..stay safe/dry, Deb!

Kathy B: I am so sorry about your kitteh...I know how it hurts, Kathy! ((((((((kathy/famblee))))))

    Sorry:

but i feel just lousy enough to say that the consideration of scapping the Comments Board is one of the worst decisions ever.

Some of the best ideas, inspirations, news sources, communications and information-gatherings were born HERE: HERE: not on the DB format...where you can read basically one post at a time. And the aver age age of some of those folks must be 15.

Never doubt--all of you--that some reputations and careers have been made and unmade on the ABR:
so please consider this when deciding to dump the Comment Board.

    Respectfully:j

Alex: Is there no one who would take this project over from you since you have so much on your plate?

I just see this closing of Comments as the beginning of the end of the ABR>

Maybe we need to split into three or more NEW forums:

    Wild Horse Preservation
(Never acknowledged on the ABR...why? Gretchen Jackson said ALLLLLL HORSES)

GREAT ZENYATTA POST, MR. B: but while reading it on the hone with Lynne, it did occur to me that perhaps Ms. Z was just sauntering along last to get a good look the the--um--attributes of those magnificent assembly of coltage in whose breeding sheds she might one day be standing...

I am of the opinion that she saw nothing that interested her n the backfield, and so began her merciless further inspections as she ate up the fractions and then just took off like the Porche she is at the end.

Determined that her Prince had not Yet (hmmmm: shall we say, "Arrived..."

God love her. I agree as well that the pity is that we may never see her run again....

How many races did Seabiscuit run? 60+/-? Perhaps the horses were made of sturdier stuff back then...but what a wonderful trip he took his public on. I love that no one knows where exactly Charles H. had his remains placed...

    xxoo:j
    COURAGE

(PS: Lynne B. agreed with all my thoughts concerning Z's careful examination of the genetic potential of her competition as she took her time beating the pants off the boys....but she was too weenie to take credit.)

Any word on Quality Road's condition this morning?

Posted by: jonnagrey at November 10, 2009 4:00 PM

:) Yes...we did have some good laughs about Ms. Z checking those boyz out on her way to the WINNER'S CIRCLE....:)

I wonder too about Quality Road...bless his horsey-self!

I spoke with our sisterfren, Kathy in SC this morning, seems that *IDA* is circling round/round/round her part of SC and they expect many trees down, due to saturated ground and too much more rain falling today...flooding will most assuredly be a part of their evening news, as well...am hoping Ida might 'hurryitup' and get back out to sea sooner than later, or just tire out and die...everyone be safe as you can!

Well...I've 'bumped' *IT'S A bArbaro CHRISTMAS*, read Joe, read Alex' Facebook entries, spoken with sistersinbArbaro on the phone, and read here..so, sadly..I must peel myself from this puder screen and get bizzy with this day:/

    See yole l8ron.

From BobbieB. -- Zenyatta is a great and powerful runner, a racehorse for the ages, but her connections knocked her out of HOY contention with keeping her locked up in CA and running against creampuffs...

Like Life Is Sweet, winner of the Breeder's Cup Ladies Classic?; or Summer Bird & Mine That Bird, respective winners of the Belmont and Kentucky Derby, both of whom Rachel also beat; or Rip Van Winkle, who challenged Sea the Stars; or consistent winner Einstein; or Gio Ponti, who was on track to win the Classic until Zenyatta roared by him?

    Were all those horses "creampuffs?"

I don't live in California but I don't get all the California track-bashing either. As I posted on another forum where that was going on, denigrating a horse because the state has synthetic tracks is nuts. There is no such thing as a "natural dirt" racetrack. It isn't the same dirt in my yard or the same dirt wild mustangs run over. It's a carefully tended mixture and its consistency varies from track to track and state to state. The "Big Sandy" is the not the same dirt rack as Churchill Downs, etc.

Look, both Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra are easily the two best American horses this year. I don't see a need to diminish one or the other, and I think if ever there was a time to award a Co-Horse of the Year award, this is it.

I agree with the others who would hate to see the Comments section shut down. It's much, much easier to read through the Comments here than try to find something in the Discussion Board area.

Perhaps you know someone else who has dealt with this problem on their blog, or someone who runs a Web site for a race track, who could help you out?

Posted by: Judy in Canada at November 10, 2009 9:39 PM

    ## Renee , sorry I don't have much to say again.

    #### Cathy, I have upset some folks by telling
what , to me , is the truth. Sportscaster Bill Finley , on ESPN, a couple weeks ago, explained this much better than I can , about Zenyatta's schedule, etc.

But I really shouldn't argue it here, but it seemed so many were ready to cast the accomplishments of Rachel aside, on one great run by Zenyatta. And that broke my heart.
In my opinion, and it is only that mind you, you can't choose a horse of the year on one run.
If you can do that, then what will become of racing ?
One race will determine it all. Rachel won a race by almost 20 lengths - but it was against fillies, like all of Zenyatta's races, except this one.
In my opinion , again, it was a moderate field.
Rachel already beat Summerbird and MTB,
Einstein is old and should be in pasture- God love him- I've loved him for ages -
A few Euro grass horses, the best one, Rip with a bad foot a week ago, I'm surprised he could run at all , but he always comes off those bad feet and tries.
So I'm just hurt that so many people are willing to forget Rachel and her races, her wins against colts 3 times, and all the records she set. I guess in the end JJ will end up paying for not bringing her.
Many are saying Zenyatta could beat Rachel. This has been said all year - but her owner never risked bringing her to any of the races nationwide that Rachel was in. Perhaps she could, perhaps Rachel would be so far ahead that Z couldn't catch her, who knows.

I am impressed with Zenyatta's 'second gear' when she is ready to go on the stretch. There are few who can accelerate like that. Remember Barbaro in the Derby coming off the third turn ?

I think many are glad to take the title away from Rachel because she came into the Preakness and beat ( fair and square) Mine That Bird who they favored for several reasons. His trainer gave his flowers to Barbaro's statue. A grand gesture that I appreciated.
There is also some regionalism in this. We all tend to like horses from our area - that is just sports, isn't it? We tend to pull for our local teams we know, same for horses more or less.

I would like to congratulate all those from the west and especially CA , for having a meet with no accidents - a miracle in itself - and having the race at beautiful Santa Anita. Most in the east are very upset at taking the horses off dirt, any kind of dirt, lol, onto a manmade surface.
It always favors European grass horses, unless the horse is already used to the artificial surface. That's what they are upset about - and have been since Curlin lost there- no one could believe it. And they did it 2 yrs in a row also.

But in the end - its all racing . You like your horse and I'll like mine. We can fuss and argue and meet in Kansas in the middle and arm wrestle to win, lol , but it'll come out in the end.

IMHO , and this is the one that counts , we are all still sisters-n-Barbaro and I wouldn't trade my good friendship with you and the other sisters for all the Rachels and Zenyattas and who wons in the world ;)

A late afternoon bunch 'o words from me....here in the westwing...

Keeping in mind, I am not any sort of even a remote authority on racehorses or racing...However:) while watching the pre-race on Saturday...they showed a chart giving sizes of horses comparing them to Zenyatta..and Z made Secretariat...who was referred to as 'big red' look on the small side.

The day Barbaro broke down at the Preakness, there was an announcer or a track Veterinarian on camera who stated, among other things, that Secretariat's heart was six times larger than that of an average horse heart, he went on to say, how he felt if anyone ever did a sonogram on Barbaro's heart, they would find his much larger than that of 'normal' also.

I read Mike Smith's words stating that she (Z) was still in third gear..I also remember Barbaro winning the Derby 6.5 lengths out, and Edgar saying he wasn't even breathing hard...those over-sized hearts give these horses AMAZING capabilities, I think.

I think the reason Zenyatta has not been beaten is because of her size and surely her heart must be very large, too.

I watched RA run a race recently, because Sandra didn't get the station, and she has followed RA all along..I put the race on, turned TV up LOUD so Sandra could hear..I found myself screaming 'go girl...GO' and honestly, I feel if that race had been just a bit longer, RA would have lost...but I don't for a moment believe Zenyatta would have...I don't think there is a horse in the USA right now, who can beat her...and for these reasons, and I remind you again, I certainly am not educated in race horses or racing...I truly believe Zenyatta deserves HOY 'hooves-down'.

    ## Lynne , I'm almost certain the one you watched of Rachel winning by a nose was her last one- she had had a full year, this was her eighth race in just months.. Zenyatta ran just 4 races before the BC..

Rachel was truly tired to the bone... yet she won, she dug down and she won and beat those boys who had come at her one by one . She had to run a 22+ second first quarter to stay ahead because Calvin wasn't going to let the colts trap her in between them in this race.
And if you remember , the colts took turns forcing her to run wide open, while the others laid back and breathed a little. 3 or 4 did this - and still they couldn't beat her !

Yes they tried to run her into the ground, but it didn't work. She had enough guts, pure guts, to dig down and outrun the last one on the stretch. Perhaps guts, fortitude , should also count in judging horse of the year ?
As far as I know ( which isn't far ! ) the physical size of the heart doesn't always determine the winner of a race. But Rachel's must be huge, physically and in spirit.

I said no one was injured and then I heard Lilly Langtry broke a knee, so I wish her well and hope it is the type of injury that heals quickly and well.

Rachel makes my hairs stand on end as well. So did Rags.

I love to watch all of the girls. They work so hard, just like we do.

I hope and pray with all my heart that CONDUIT's connections reconsider sending him to Japan. So many good horses go there, and are never heard of again. (BAGO, ROSES IN MAY...FERDINAND).

They go, and they don't come back. Their pedigreequery info too often simply says "Sent to Japan," then two or three years later, we read "died." ...and that's it. All you have to do is track the lack of monetary success of their progeny, then add a mere year or two before noticing that their breeding days, (and probably their lives) have come to an end.

I'm not saying this happens to ALL of them...However, I have noticed this trend for a good many.

I was thinking of FERDINAND during all of this year's races. So many of the stunning chestnuts who ran this year called him to mind. CONDUIT is one of them.

I hope he will be OK. "Being sent to Japan," This worries me.

Oh Lord, I pray that time and circumstances will prove me wrong.

We are praying for all of the storms to pass. Yes?

Hiya, FsOB! I think that it would be a fantastic accomplishment and a testimony to fillies everywhere (including those of us who ambulate on two legs rather than four!) if Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta might share the 2009 Horse of the Year Award.

Alex, I echo the chorus here again, saying please let us know what we can do to help, in order to keep ABR and its Comments Board alive & well. I find it amusing & endearing whenever members of my extended family or my professional acquaintances ask: "How are you Barbaro people doing these days? What are you all working on now?". Alex, you have created a phenomenon here, one which can help advance TB racing, laminitis research, and the protection of North American horses. Wishing you and all citizens of The Barbaro Nation "ACN". Peace, Robyn in CT

    #### To Joan R.: Please let us know if the lost borzoi have been found by their family.
To Debbie LA: Glad that you are safe. Praise the Lord & pass the carrots! ####

JOE PART TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO: JEST A LITTLE LATE
    **********************************************
One thing I have learned in more than 4 years of this website. You love to hear from other readers.

So send me one sentence. Please just one. You can give your age, but for sure I need your first name and where you live. In that one sentence, tell us what you are most thankful for. Our e-mail tbfriends@aol

In the next two weeks I will do my best to post your sentence.

Joe, 29 times 2, Woodland: I am thankful for readers of my website who respond when I cry for help. Yesterday a neglected pregnant thoroughbred mare was transported to her new home with Tori in Fairfield.

Also yesterday, a very cute but lame Paint gelding from a private owner, found a new home with a family in Woodland.

And from a rescue ranch out of business, our friend Angela transported an older thoroughbred mare to her new home in Auburn.

Cathy and I love Thanksgiving. Our favorite holiday. Can already taste that gravy. Enjoy your maybe some rain on the way Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Bee Gees on the oldies station...
