    Barbaro Updates: 977

    updates are now here.

Update 5790: A couple of cool blog posts:

Zenyatta: A Horse for the People
On Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra and Memory.

And now off to the races at Woodbine.

Update 5789: Eight galloped for Steve this morning at Woodbine, and a gorgeous morning for training too. All mine galloped nicely. There was a lot of buzz around the track this morning regarding Zenyatta's terrific performance yesterday. Inevitably the discussions lead to whether her victory was good enough to give her horse of the year honors.

Update 5788: Media coverage of Zenyatta's Classic victory:

    Zenyatta triumphs in Classic
It's All Zenyatta in the BC Classic
    Zenyatta simply perfect in Classic
    Zenyatta Wins Breeders' Cup Classic

Update 5787: And here is the race on YouTube: Breeders Cup Classic 2009.

Update 5786: And how to you beat the performance of Goldikova, ask ZENYATTA!

Update 5785: Breeders' Cup live discussion: Breeders Cup Live Thread/Results.

Update 5784: A little over halfway through the card on the second day of the Breeders' Cup and no doubt the performance of the Championships so far: Goldikova's repeat win in the Mile. Absolutely outstanding win.

Update 5783: Eight galloped this morning for Steve at Woodbine. And it was a little warmer this morning too for training. All mine galloped nicely. One was a little (too) excited coming on to the track. Thankfully he settled down a little when it was time to gallop! We have a couple of runners this afternoon, and I will stay at the track to watch the Breeders' Cup races.

Update 5782: In the wake of Life is Sweet's victory yesterday, can trainer John Shirreffs do the double today with the unbeaten Zenyatta: A Sign, Perhaps, in a Filly's Victory.

Update 5781: Some great Breeders' Cup races today. I won't deny there was a significant air of disappointment when Careless Jewel folded in the Ladies Classic, but other than that --- great stuff. Life is Sweet won the Ladies Classic for Zenyatta's trainer John Shirreffs. Jonathan Sheppard won a race with Informed Decision. He also had a third place finish with Forever Together. And Henry Cecil won his first Breeders' Cup race with Midday. An exciting start. More tomorrow.

Update 5780: Here is an update from Sue McMullen on the European contigency in the Breeder's Cup:

This year's European raiders have something to live up to as five wins last year was record-breaking and set the bar very high.

Here is a brief look at this year's main contenders and includes only those who are travelling and not US based.

    Marathon Stakes

Muhannak (IRE) : Winner last year but that was arguably a weaker field. Has not shown anything like that form this season and the increase in distance looks against him. Father Time: Won the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot in June but beaten on last two runs and stamina has to be questioned. Mastery: Proven over the distance when winning the St Leger at Doncaster in September with Father Time three and a half lengths fourth. Has a touch of class – three and half lengths third to Cavalryman in the Group One Grand Prix de Paris - and has had one run on the Polytrack at Kempton. Man of Iron: Improving type but will need to be as this is a step up on any of his three wins – although the last two of those have come on the Polytrack at Dundalk.

    Juvenile Fillies Turf

Lillie Langtry: Second-favourite for the 1000 Guineas and better than her penultimate run (beaten on heavy ground at the Curragh in August) suggests. Won a valuable sales race at Newmarket last month and represents high-level European form.Junia Tepzia: Originally trained in Italy (now Germany). Unbeaten in two races including a Listed race at San Siro. She could be anything.

    Filly & Mare Sprint

Only Green: Won a Listed race at Chantilly last month but has looked out of her depth in higher grades.

    Filly & Mare Turf

Midday: Trained by the hugely popular Henry Cecil, she won both the Oaks and Irish Oaks and then won the Group One Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in August, beating Rainbow View by two and a quarter lengths. rCecil believes she may have needed the run in the Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp last month and will come on for that run.

    Ladies Classic

Rainbow View: Top-flight juvenile last season but has won only one in seven this year. Second in the EP Taylor at Woodbine last month, when Lepareaux rode. Fast ground has been a problem before but she may take to Pro-Ride.

    Tomorrow

    Juvenile Turf

Viscount Nelson:: Listed winner at Tipperary and second to Poet’s Voice in the Group Two Champagne Stakes at Doncaster in September.
Pounced: Trainer won this race last year with Donativum and this one comes to the race with a higher level of form having finished second in the Group One Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp last month, with Buzzword a half-length third. Awesome Act: Only ninth when stepped to Group One level in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last month and has something to find on bare form. Buzzword: Won a Group Three race in France in September and a close fifth in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last month.

    Turf Sprint

Lord Shanakill: Formerly with Karl Burke and yet to race for new yard having been with Madella for about a month. Not run since the end of July but did win the Group One Prix Jeam Prat in France.Strike the Deal: Could be a lively outsider. Hit form with a Listed and Group Three win in September and both of those came when ridden by Kieren Fallon.

    Dirt Mile

Mastercraftsman: Top-notch turf miler who has won the Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes. Placed twice over ten furlongs by Sea The Stars (International and Irish Champion Stakes) later in the season and then won a Group Three on the Polytrack at Dundalk. Can be a slow starter but likely to be able to grind it out in the finish.

    Juvenile

Alfred Nobel: Recent from does not read that well but it could be underrated by US odds makers. Recent runs in Ireland have been on heavy ground and he then ran fifth in a valuable sales race at Newmarket where he appeared to be the victim of a heavy draw bias. Better ground could show a very different horse.Beethoven: O'Brien's second string according to jockey bookings. Been running without success in most of the top juvenile races in Europe. Was only a neck second to a stable companion in the Group One Dewhurst Stakes, although that form looks a little flimsy.
Vale of York: The yard’s juveniles have been running well in Europe this year and this one has shown some form but would still be a surprise to win this. Radiohead: Recently bought by his US owner. Has won twice over five furlongs – then took on the older sprinters to finish third in the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes - and was held up to get the six furlongs in the Group One Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket last month where he finished second to Awzaan so stamina has to be a concern.

    Mile

Delegator: Second in both the 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes before being bought by Godolphin. Has since won a Group Two at Goodwood (but may lose it for a banned substance) and finished third to Rip Van Winkle in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. Godolphin are thinking of dropping in distance for next year as a stiff mile appears just too much. However Last Tycoon, who was a six-furlong horse in Europe, found the two-turn mile at Santa Anita easy when he won this race in 1986. Zacinto: Highly rated two-year-old who missed the first half of this season because of injury. Has improved with every run and split Rip Van Winkle and Delegator in the QE II. Gladiatorus: Rated the best horse in the world when he won on Dubai World Cup night. That was on a two-turn mile but looked a shadow of that form in his first three runs of the European season. Did win a Group One in Italy last month but a real leap of faith to fancy him here. Goldikova: Trying to emulate Miesque, who Head rode to win the Mile in 87 and 88. Put up an imperious performance to slam a good field in the Group One Prix Jacques Le Marois by six lengths at Deauville in August. Below-par last time out, in the Group One Prix de la Foret. The draw was against her – as it is here – and the trainer was preparing her with one eye on this race so she can be expected to come on for the run.

    Sprint

Fleeting Spirit: Very game filly who was fourth in last year’s Turf Sprint since when she has run in four Group One races winning the July Cup and finishing second in the other three. The concern is that she has been a slow starter so may be playing catch-up.

    Turf

Conduit: Put up a career-best performance to win this last year and backed that up by winning the Group One King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July and then running fourth to Sea The Stars in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He's at his best coming from the back of a fast-run race so a front-runner like Precious Passion should set it up for him. Red Rocks: Won this race in 2006, third in 2007 but well off the pace in 2008 and shown very little in three runs since. Dar Re Mi: Has been an underrated filly but won two Group Ones this season (was actually three but disqualified in France for causing very minor interference) against her own sex. Just behind Conduit when fifth in the Arc but looks held on that form.
Spanish Moon: Not allowed to run in Britain after refusing to enter the gate but he's won two top races in France this season.

    Classic

Twice Over: Can be forgotten that he beat last year’s Classic winner, Raven’s Pass, first time up as a three-year-old. Did not fulfil that promise last season and seemed to have plateaued with a string of placed runs. Dropped in grade for a couple of easy wins and then came back to win the Group One Champion Stakes at Nerwmarket last month. A career-best victory but more needed here. Rip Van Winkle: Further reports of foot problems have been superceded and O'Brien says he's now fine. Fourth in both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby but then, arguably, gave Sea The Stars his biggest test when a length second in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown. Won both the Sussex Stakes and the QEII over a mile and earlier form suggests he should handle return to ten furlongs.

Good luck to all concerned and let's hope for a trouble-free and fantastic BC>

Update 5779: Don't forget you can listen to our ABR radio shows to pick up Breeders' Cup tips for today and tomorrow.

This week's show we covered all the races with the help of Lisa Grimm from Superfecta: Alex Brown Racing on the Radio

And last week Paul Moran helped us focus on four of the key races, the Classic (tomorrow), Ladies Classic (today), the Mile (tomorrow) and the Sprint (tomorrow): Alex Brown Racing on the Radio.

Only five galloped this morning at Woodbine. Two also went to the gate for some schooling. An easy morning's work which was very nice. We have a few runners this afternoon, and it's the Friday program for the Breeders' Cup, so I will be up at Champions Bar at Woodbine watching all the races!

Update 5778: Breeders' Cup begins today with Ladies day. Stars such as Careless Jewel (Zenyatta's presence looms over Ladies' Classic), Ventura (Ventura leads strong Filly and Mare Sprint field) and Forever Together (Ladies man Strawbridge set for Friday) will attempt to win their respective races.

In all there are six Breeders' Cup races today and eight tomorrow: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies.

    And please keep calling.

Hiya, FsOB! TGIF! I do not relish what has greeted Marg up in Maine this AM, waking up to snow. I second Marg's wish that all horses & riders in the Breeder's Cup have a safe ride to the finish line. Peace, Robyn

    #### To Joan Roya, please see my note on last night's Comments Board. I tried to offer some suggestions for that gentleman with the two sick children. Kudos to you, Joan, for offering him a hand in his desperate situation. ####

A Beautiful morning is dawning here in the Tampa Bay area. After morning feeding I will be taking out the big red Baron for a joyfull ride down the trails, through the park, and around the lake. I truly feel like the luckiest gal in the world to share my life with my rescued TWH. Often times I feel that we have saved each other!!

I pray that God will watch over all riders and horses at the BC event this weekend. May they all cross the finish line healthy and whole and of course, may the best team of horse and rider claim victory. I will not be watching this year, just can't stomach horse racing anymore.

Barbaro, George Washington, Eight Belles and countless others over the years have soured me on this "sport".

Enjoy the weekend friends. May love and peace surround you.

Please remember in your prayers and thoughts the soldiers and the families of those who were killed or wounded at Ft Hood.

We all handle hundreds of decisions every day--dress or pants, cereal or pancakes, coffee or tea, this project or that, park here or there, and so on. If we really knew how many decisions and details we attend to each day, we'd be overwhelmed. Sometimes we're overwhelmed without knowing the exact number! But few decisions are more important than this one: what words we use with those around us. Even on your busiest day, we can find time to say, "Great job!" , "What a lovely dress!". "Thank you!", and most important of all, "I love you!" Remember to keep life and love and the top of the list of decisions you have to make each day. You'll be happier and others will be too.

Good ..... *FRIDAY* Morning, ABR Famblee:)

Yipppeeeeee!!! We have made it to another *FRIDAY MORNING*!!

SNOW??? OY! It is FINALLY feeling a little..and I do mean 'little' chilly here in these foothills this morning, but still no need to turn the heat on...that is good, as the "Liquid Gold' otherwise referred to as propane is not cheap:/

Some parts of our Golden State were blessed with rain last night..but not this far south..we sure could use some! Tuesday may bring our next chance, holding good thoughts it will arrive!

Joan Roya: Check your email, I copied/pasted the link to the article Jonna wants you to read...and Jonna, yes..I concur...some of the southern shelters (pounds) do need to get into the 21st Century! I suppose, in all fairness to them, it all depends on dollars available to the facilities from the budgets of towns/cities/counties..and sadly, so many are in SRS financial hard times right now:(

Everyone:) There is a new Thread on the Discussion Board...under Horse Rescue Issues and I'd just love it if you'd go see:)

Title: *QUILT RAFFLE FOR WINTER FEED* Advanced Search #: 42574.1

If one of the 'blue-ink-Queen Ladeees' might be so kind as to do their 'magic' that would be awfully nisssseeeee:)

There is a custom made, one-of-a-kind, AWARD WINNING quilt there with HORSES on it...(naturally) and the tickets are $5.00 each or five for $20.00 deadline for purchase is 12/14 at 5p...westwing time...and it is to benefit the SEVENTY HORSES at Safe Haven Horse Rescue...where 'my' *CHARLEY* lives and *DRIFTER* and *DELTA DAWN* among 67 others:) They need winter feed, and the rescue could sure use some help in purchasing it. The quilt is ready to be hung on a wall in your home or office and it's beautiful!

I will be 'talking to God' about the BC this weekend....keeping those amazing athletes, the HORSES and their riders surrounded by WHITE LIGHT...and getting home safe/sound!

    Please God, Hear Our Prayer.

I hope everyone has a 'swiftly moving, with no incidents which could cause bumps in the road', Friday and a GREAT/GRAND/WONDERFUL weekend.

Lynne how much did we send to Joe for CJ?

    ##

Deb...I go to my PO on Fridays...and as of last Friday, we were still waiting for a total of 14 pledges...Thusfar, I have: $778.00 and I believe we received pledges for somewhere in the neighborhood of $1100.00. Nancy has the Spread Sheet, she's the 'bookeeper', I am simply the collector and mailer.

Hoping more envelopes await my visit to the PO this afternoon:) We are hoping to mail the packet off to Joe by 11/15. The 'extra' dollars are for the 'nestegg' to help support CJ's horse while it is living at Joe's house.

I will contact our Naughty Nancy this evening, as I always do, on Fridays, as well as sending she and Lee each an email showing what I'd received that day in the mail...and I believe if people's pledges are still not received, a 'gentle reminder' email will be forthcoming from Nancy.

There is some sad news here in Toronto. Winfield Farms will officially shut down after the BC giving way to housing developments. Winfield Farms is home to the infamous Northern Dancer and many others. Careless Jewell will be their last racing and yes she is of the Dancer's lineage and she is favoured to win which would be a nice send off for the people left who have been managing the farm for the past few years. There will be a small parcel of land that will be kept which includes the grave of the Dancer and many others. So sad to see the urban blight take over.

    Good Morning Gang.

####Jonna - I am not sure what the LALA's are about, or the gaack. Are you sure you are referring to the right Margie? There are several of us Margies posting around the ABR sections. I have not been here for a few days due to a dire family emergency. I'm hoping I didn't do anything to upset you when I was here last.

Carleen, thank you so much for your prayers and thoughts for Chief and me.
It has been 4 months and seems like yesterday. I miss him more each day. Some of yole told me it might take 7 months to start feeling better about my boy. I thought surely not that long. Right now I am thinking it might be several years if ever.

Posted by: sandra at November 6, 2009 5:40 PM

    ## Sandra,

I've had many dogs and loved them all totally. But I had one 'heart' dog and I loved him like a child, which I think it the way you love Chief.
When I lost him, I must have cried off and on for at least a year.

It took me years, 4 or 5 probably , to be able to think of him and remember the good things and not cry or be sad. I think of him now with sadness, but I can remember his foibles, etc. , and laugh.

I have his picture hanging in one of my hallways,
which I call the hall of fame. There are pictures of my ancestors and one animal - him.
Many times when I pass his photo, I kiss my finger and touch it to him. Love never ends Sandra, but your immediate pain will lessen.

I don't 'suffer' every day or even think of him every day now, but there is a place in the heart, a bittersweet place, just for him.
I hope it helps you to know others like me have been there and survived. Looking back now, even
with suffering the loss, and living with the pain for so long, I wouldn't trade a moment spent with him during his life for anything.

Mrs. Jackson, when she told us that grief is the price we play for love, stated a profound truth.
I wish you healing, my Barbaro fren.

    Friday, November 7th...

This past spring we began a program called Tbkids. 6 kids at a time would come on a Saturday and learn about thoroughbreds. We always had pie.

It was a Saturday session in July when we met Kacie. Nice kid. 13 years old, and crazy for horses. On that Saturday, as Kacie was leaving, she asked would it be okay if she stayed in touch? Just to talk about horses. Well sure. Horses are my favorite subject.

In a recent e-mail Kacie wrote she had $300.00 saved. In the near future she would like her money used to rescue a feed lot horse.

Kacie lives with her mom. I talked to mom who said Kacie earns money by doing odd jobs in the neighborhood, including babysitting. Helping a doomed horse is all Kacie talks about. Mom did a thumbs up. We have her permission.

And so I told Kacie, when you are ready I will visit the feed lot in Wilton and spend your money. Kacie said make sure the horse is a thoroughbred. Neglected, injured or starving preferred. The ultimate rescue.

Kacie had already chosen a name... Kandy with a K.

All I needed was the cash. Kacie said she would see me soon.

Kacie and her mom live east of Sacramento, about 45 minutes away. On Monday afternoon they drove to our ranch. Kacie wanted to tell me in person.

She said sorry Joe, but the money is gone. There is a family in her apartment complex who could not pay November rent. A girl in that family is best friends with Kacie. Kacie and two other girls from school raised money for the family. Kacie contributed her $300.00. November rent for the family is paid.

Kacie felt so bad. She really wanted her money to be spent on a feed lot horse named Kandy.

The entire time Kacie is telling her story, I kept thinking... I sure get to meet the best kids.

Yesterday, up our driveway, from the feed lot in Wilton. A beautiful bay thoroughbred mare. The mare is skinny and depressed. Paid for with money from readers of this website. The mare is now named Kandy. On the phone Kacie cried when I told her the news.

I sure get to meet the best kids. Oh wait, I already said that. What a boost. Better than a shot of caffeine at Starbucks. Kids who make each day matter. Always with horses in the background.

    ## update: What a bizzy day ! Included 2 new tires on horse trailer - unloading 4 bales of hay - several sacks of feed and shavings. I moved Warpaint and Dakota late afternoon. AMAZING - they ran around the arena - I could see the familiarity from 18 months ago - and a gratitude for being back. For the first time in 18 months - they ate side by side in the round corral ...... it was so great to see ! We all breathed deeply - surrounded by the peace and quiet vs the chaos of the bizzy boarding facility. YES ! Tomorrow morning the "big truck" arrives to move the big stuff - I still have much to do tonite and early tomorrow - AMIGO has a new and nifty bed to welcome him !! jonna - sister fren - my new coffee shop will be Circle K - the corner convenience shop with GREAT coffee at 50% less cost than coffee shops ...... and there are many trees and plants on property - AMIGO will find new pee places as he helps me feed the big boys ! Will take and email pix for anyone interested ......
Prayers for all running in tomorrow's races -
thoughts and love to BearBear - and any and all in need of big hugs -

    JOE FOR SATURDAY:
    **************************************************
    Saturday, November 8th...

This week we placed a pregnant thoroughbred mare with a nice lady in Danville.

Also a neglected quarter horse gelding went to a barn in Davis.

We found a new home for a race horse from Golden Gate Fields. A beautiful barn, and they even have a security guard at night.

A former race horse with an ankle the size of a soccer ball was transported to his new home in Elk Grove.

And that is all. So far a quiet week.

Always the same this time of year. New homes are scarce. But we keep trying. Tbfriends has access to horses from private owners. Feed lots. Auction yards. Mexican rodeos. Rescue ranches out of business. California race tracks.

There is no charge for most of these horses. The feed lot horses are priced by the pound. We can help with transportation. Remember, it is much faster to phone than write. Give me a call at 530-383-2120.

A former Tbfriends horse now called Monkey is featured on a video with the equine website Bay Area Equestrian Network. He came to us from a race track with the name Raise Expectations. A big Thank You to Debbie for the news. I have not been able to watch the video, but friends say Monkey is amazing.

Another former Tbfriends horse we called Good Morning was recently resold for a huge sum of money. The owner received more than ten thousand dollars, a nice bit of cash for this current horse market. The tall gray gelding is now named Dawn. Apparently Dawn can jump over the moon.

Earlier this year we found a new home for a small Morgan gelding from a barn right here in Woodland. We just found out the Morgan gelding is now giving riding lessons to special needs kids. His new name Dustin. His new owner a lady I once worked with at another ranch.

I could write all morning about our former horses. But chores are forever. Hungry horses wondering where is that old guy with food? Enjoy your 67 degree sunny Saturday, and be sure to hug your horses. Aretha on the oldies station...

FYI my local SOUTHERN animal shelter has only used injection for euthenasia for years. I'm probably missing something regarding this post because I admit there is much to be changed in animal shelters across the nation,.

    CJ UPDATE:
    ***********

First of all, we have to get busy and get going at the work CJ did for the FoBs with the co-sponsor listings, exhortations, etc. Please, Shelley & Debra: got any ideas? There's a vacuum, and I know that no one really wants to fill the space...but we gotta.

Secondly: I just spoke with Fred for about an hour. He sounded so LIGHTENED. I thank God in Heaven (who is having a grand time with Caroline Jaffe) and is probably partying hardy already for the Breeder's Choice Day.

Haha: we never DISCUSSED RACING...per se. We were of two very fierce minds on that topic...but respected each other's opinions.

The night of CJ's wake, the Gallery was sold out: SRO: All the wild-ass musicians in Chicago were there, her fans, attournies she worked with...

The Chicago bands--lead by Fred's band--played CJ music all night long, other tribute music devoted to her work, ate, drank, made merry and I am sure that CJ thoroughly enjoyed her front row seat on it all.

As for her passing, Fred says, "It's not such a bad thing to die with four friends standing by your side..."

Her three kitties will go live with Joanie, Crazy April and the "other one..." will stay with Kay and Fred. So that is cool.

Otherwise, I hear relief and a great sense of absence in Fred's voice....which, in my experience, often go hand in hand when someone dies of such grave illness as did our fren.

I will miss her on so many levels. She taught me some very important lessons, and gave me answers to questions i didn't even know I had in my heart.

So, except for wishing I had had my own leetle Lear and been able to fly out and be there myself and her party, I have no regrets about CJ.

    Except that--except that, except that.......
well, yole know what I mean.

I worried about the trouble loading her in the gate and then having to redo again..but she proved who the best horse was today..from last to first and she still had steam.. I wonder who they will breed her to..something very worthy, I hope..

Posted by: Harriette Brillianthawk at November 8, 2009 12:39 AM

She is so cute....did anyone see her in the paddock, playing with her lead, strutting with her front legs way out..........so much like one of my show dogs.........what a darling...I can't stand it! I also love MTB, who won the Kentucky Derby........and his owner Chip, a wonderful man.........he has nothing to prove, the little horse that could.......let him retire on his laurels and be loved forever for what he is and what he has done.

Congratulations to all 155 runners and all of their connections.

It should be noted too, that it is extremely appropriate now, to tout the benefits of the Synthetic track at Santa Anita. No injuries in this year's meet!

Thank God, for the great moments, and for getting them home in safety.

As Mike Smith just said, " God must have wanted a horse of His own, so He made ZENYATTA and let her come here and run for us."

We have witnessed a moment in history today, Dear Frens. And, hay, CJ had a pretty good seat for THIS one.

JANE - I have never seen anything like it in my life, and thought I'd have a heart attack! I haven't watched racing in more than 18 months EXCEPT for 2 or 3 times when Zenyatta was on a channel I could watch...she is truly incredible, an amazing athlete and gorgeous to boot!!!

Congratulations to all her connections for her exquisite career - barely raced as a three year-old, most of her wins as a four year-old...and her final five wins as a five year-old.

Posted by: NancyNaughtyNutmegger at November 8, 2009 1:05 AM

Harriette, I know, I was a basket case, drinking a glass of wine that turned into two or three......I could see visions of a real problem with the gate....OMG, that she could overcome that and go on to win......also all of the others...they deserve real praise.......what an emotional one half hour, that thankfully turned out OK......all I know is that I am drained but happy....she is SOMETHING ELSE. Wouldn't you kill to meet her in person????? '

    # Yessiree, Fren Nancy. I DID mean, specifically, the BC meet, and not necessarily 'the Santa Anita meet' which would encompass all of this year's racing there.

You zeroed in on the jist for me. Thank you for the correction. It DOES make a difference.

G-O-O-O-O-D BREEDERS CUP this year. I am so-o-o happy that, for this big event anyway, we do not have to share grief or heartbreak.

Sweet dreams ALL. The sky here is dark and clear. It had been a beautiful sunny, and unusually warm day. I will be able to see his star tonight. I will breath in the sweet night air, and give thanks with a happy heart.

    ZENYATTA.

    I watched.

    I don't watch.

    Lynne said: "YOU'RE GONNA WATCH?!"

I told her I just had that feeling. That feeling that said it's all going to be OK. (I do think I heard a bouyant "Buh-Bye" just as they successfully loaded.)

Then, by the time they left the gate, and we couldn't even SEE Zenyatta, I kept having the image in my head of Smith trying to pull her up, her injured, like Ruffian, Go for Wand, still trying to run....so scary.

But I still felt that all would be ok....even with that mess for Quality Road and unloading, re-loading.....

    ZENYATTA: what a ride.
She's force of nature--like all the great ones: I love to see them eating up the fractions like that ride....And everyone coming home safe!

Hoping for no permanent damage for Quality Road. Those scrapes as Bramlege said...he did seem to be favoring his RH leg....God, please let him be ok.

    Anyhow.
    Thank You Caroline.
    Thank you Mike Smith.

    Lou Ann,
Quality Road didn't want to load in the gate and was fighting and kicking up a storm. The loading crew blindfolded him and got him in the gate, but when he realized where he was, he started kicking and bucking up a storm and scratched his leg at least, broke the skin. That made him a gate scratch. It didn't sound like he was hurt more than a boo-boo, but they were taking no chances.

The dancing, prancing, running machine named Zenyatta has completely captured my heart - indeed it took several hours for my heart rate to return to normal after her race...and I apologize for SCREAMING into Auntie Lynne Brown's ear on the telephone :~)

My prayers this morning are with Quality Road - I totally agree with Martita's eloquent post on the discussion board where she stated "that horse saved his own life." I firmly believe in the innate instincts of animals - birds knowing just
when to fly south for the winter, squirrels' tails growing fatter and fatter for protection depending upon how severe the upcoming winter will be etc. And in my heart I believe that Quality Road KNEW something was wrong with him and that perhaps running that race would have meant the end of him. My heartfelt prayer is that he will undergo the most extensive veterinary examination ever...it's fine that his scrapes were treated, and that he received a few stitches, but IMO more in-depth investigation is needed. I used to watch racing every day until my mental health suffered from all the breakdowns to which I bore witness, and I have NEVER seen such resistance to entering a gate in my life. Please, dear people in charge of Quality Road, LISTEN TO YOUR HORSE!

I am amazed that my local CBS affiliate actually covered the Classic on this morning's news - normally the only racing coverage we see is a very brief clip of the Triple Crown races with a shot of the winner crossing the finish line, but this am the announcer said "It's Girl Power in the Breeders' Cup Classic" and they showed Quality Road's "problems" in loading and nearly all the race! Since I can't play videos, I was thrilled to have another chance to see poetry and power in motion...BRAVA QUEEN ZENYATTA!!! And congratulations to Mike Smith for his supreme confidence in his horse and for appearing to be "cool as a cucumber" despite her rough start!

    Good morning, fellow Fans!

Still snow on the ground here...and I'm not ready for winter yet. But, it's supposed to be 60 degrees this afternoon, which will certainly chase the last little bits away.

Breeder's Cup...Zenyatta...WOW!!!!!! I saw on DRF where there was one person who hit the Pick 6 from the Breeder's Cup yesterday - and the bet was placed at an OTB here in Maine. Who knew, in this land of Standardbred racing, there was someone who could win so much ($1.8 million +!!!) on a Thoroughbred race?

Yesterdays race will go down in history as one of the greatest ever,We will all remember it,Mike Smith said it best I never took her out of 3rd gear,To beat the best colts & geldings in the world, does not get any better then that.

    Dear Mr. Wooley:

That little horse needs some god damned rest. I don't give a fig for the damned track composite. Mine That Bird needs to roll in the grass and nicker at his buds and get fed a lot of carits and just be a damned horse.

From a a formerly doting Wooley fan:
    (like you could care....)
    grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

(And it would be really grand if you could find ONE jockey and stick with THAT jockey.)

    Naughty: me too! me too!
She took my breathe away, and that is what everyone loves about TB racing. as for the rest, well, yole know how i feel about that. But the runs--the Great Runs--I think this is why God gave us hearts...to simply glory in the beauty of his creations.

And God's greyhounds too of course, except---hahaha--the ancient GH is a blur compared to the TB. Short distance sprints, but just try to focus your eyes on a gh when he/she is running for the stuppppid rabbit.

God is good to have brought them all home safe.
Thank you: one of your more grateful hoomins.

    Good SUNDAY Morning, ABR Famblee:)

    Holy Cromoly!! *ZENYATTA*...Holy Cromoly!!

Yes..I was poised in front of the TV...Jonnagrey on da fone w/me..but when Quality Road was so seriously fighting that gate entry...and then when he came through the gate...I hit 'recall' on my remote, it was just too much for me, Famblee...I really, really tried...but not succesfully.

On phone then, with Naughty Nancy (Thank You, God for free long-distance plans!) My ears are STILL ringing...LOL! :) But I am very glad for Zenyatta and ALL connected to her...she is TRULY something to watch...and respect....and admire! Holy Cromoly!!!

I did get to see the race in the replay..and though I'd heard Nancy say, "she's dead last" little did I realize just 'how last' she was and did she EVER 'turn it on' and Holy Cromoly!! :)

Yole know me...I am always just EVER GRATEFUL they get back home and safely into their stalls again, but this horse is indeed quite something to see in action! Though, truth be known..I'm really happy to have heard them say her racing career is overwith now:)

I'm so grateful all came round that last turn and finished safe/sound....I hope MTB will go home now, to NM and live his life just bein' a horse..I love him to PIECES, that little guy!

And for Quality Road...I hope if he fights the gate so strongly, they might find out why, maybe he'd like to try another career, maybe he's tired of the gates. He's done a good job for his peeps, he's won nearly a million dollars in just seven starts.

I hope everyone will have a great day today!

Amen, Jonna - I totally agree with you that Mine That Bird needs a good long stretch of "r and r"...the only horse (I'm pretty sure) to run in all three Triple Crown races, which is always grueling competition...and the dear little boy came away with a Win, Place and Show!

He has nothing to prove and has a legion of devoted fans right here at ABR who love him no matter what, and right now I think he needs to rest up and his connections need to give some thought to his four year-old campaign...including a "regular" jockey whenever possible, and not necessarily Bo-rail.

    GIRL POWER! ZENYETTA!

i was so nervous watching Quality Road...and thinking bad omen...and thinking of Barbaro...and praying...and trying to quit smoking...went outside and smoke and smoke....worried....
i was so thankful....so thankful....THE RIGHT THING WAS ONE...SCRATCHED QUALITY ROAD...

and Einstein...bless him..he did good...too...plus all of the others...in my book they are all safe...they are all winners...

AND ....good news...Karen Dyer..Tennessee FOB...long time with us....drove 6 hours one way and back....and rescued
Goldie...sight unseen...a beautiful dog....that was going to be put down tomorrow.

Karen has been one of our die hard FOBs...too....and has three other rescued doggies....her heart is big as the universe...like alot of you all.

do not know if Goldie has shots or spaded...Karen rescued her from one of the poorest counties in Ohio....high kill shelter.

I hope we can help Karen too...since she takes care of her household by herself...too...

    ####
as for BearBear....Jen said his lymph node was down some....and praying for his cancer to go into remission...so that family can have some quality time...for awhile....may God intervene.

I know God intervene on the races....I am so proud of all of them...but especially the owners and trainers of Quality Road...hope he heals good and soon.

OK, here's a muse concerning another champion who seems to have become a mere footnote:

I wonder why, with all of the races, (Stakes races and Handicaps), that the great and tragic FERDINAND, KD and BC Classic winner/twice HOTY/Eclipse Award winner, does not have a race named in HIS honor?

Is it perhaps because subliminally, the racing industry would rather, given the circumstances of his ultimate fate, that he be forgotten?

Wouldn't it be wonderful, if there was a FERDINAND STAKES?...

...where his story of glory would be re-told...

...where he would be remembered for being the great champion he was, and that would overshadow the disgrace of his tragic ending...

...and, as a tribute to his legacy, every single horse who ever runs in the race which honors his memory, were to have a promise of lifelong tracking, where the Stakes administration would be advised of the horse's whereabouts and owner, for the rest of its life....

...and, should any one of them come to the end of its days with risk of being homeless or on the way to slaughter, ALL of its previous owners, all the way back to the breeder, would be notified. After that point, worst-case-scenario, a pre-paid gentle euthanasia would already been have covered by the virtue of its having run in FERDINAND's race.

As I watched the BC, I saw my beloved FERDINAND in nearly every fiery chestnut. I saw him shining on their gleaming coats, and in every little white star upon many of their foreheads. I saw him in the arching of their necks, and rippling muscels. I saw him in the look of their eyes, bothe fiercely highstrung, and gentle and kind.

For some reason, he called to me all day, even shining within the shadow of the great ZENYATTA.

Perhaps, when I go into THISGOODPLACE again, he will make another appearance. I hope so.

Thanks all, for indulging my taking the space here with this muse. The sun is shining in, and it's a good day for dreaming daydreams.

Oh yes, a vision of MTB rolling in the sweet grass of a quiet pasture, is indeed a refreshing breeze for our souls.

Sweet dreamings to you all today,

    Your FOB Fren, O

Thank you so much Alex for the links above, I enjoyed the videos of the trainer, jockey, etc.

We all got to witness the brighter side of racing yesterday, what a gift it is when it goes so well!

    Blessings to all,

Wow! I can't say it any better than my Famblee above. Starting with Naughty Nancy. lol I agree Tim Wooley needs to come to his senses and let that sweet little guy rest before he ruins him. Nickers in the grass as Jonna said, rolling in the dirt, big grunts, running and farting,bucking...just being A Horse kicking up his back legs and feeling good, a good day just laying in the grass.
Ever since the Great Barbaro, I never thought I would be so taken by a horse again. Zenyatta won my heart her dancing and prancing she is just an entertainer and gives to her fans. What a beautiful filly she is. A big hearted girl. She made me cry I was so happy for her and screaming a like a nut case. It was wonderful it felt so good.
Barbaro set my heart free yesterday, and I thank him from the bottom of it. You my darling boy will always be #1.

The excitment we all felt and still feel is so darn good. We all needed that for what we do is not easy or fun.

God Bless you Famblee, we shared a great day yesterday. Our hearts smiled and cheered for this great filly. May God Bless and keep her safe all her days.

I love you all very much.

    Alex

Could you talk about why all of the top horses this year seem to be "come from behind" specialists. Mine The Bird, Summer Bird, Zenyatta, etc. Is it unusual this year how many times the winner of big stakes races has been last at some point in the race.

    Thanks
    Heather

Posted by: Heather at November 8, 2009 10:24 PM

Heather a great question for Alex. When Zenyatta fell behind and stayes there yesterday. I was feeling horrible for her. I was wondering if what happened at the gate had anything to do with it. Then she showed the world and the boys what she is truly made of,a powerhorse with hooves and a heart of fire. May she continue to be safe and enjoy her life. And may we contine to enjoy her and her gift to us her public. I applaude you Zenyatta a special girl and beautiful filly with a very very big beautiful heart.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at November 8, 2009 11:38 PM

Rachel is more of a take the lead or close to the lead horse.

I read somewhere that more horse who come from behind win than any other.

    From above;;;;
    **************************************************
In a scintillating performance, Zenyatta powered to victory in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita this afternoon before a crowd of 58,845 wildly cheering fans. In beating the world-class field of male runners, Zenyatta soundly established her place in history and preserved her perfect record, with 14 wins in 14 starts.

For those of us lucky enough to be among the cheering crowd, it was a time to be cherished and remembered forever. In an almost surreal moment after she crossed the finish line, people all around me screamed, wept, clapped wildly, and hugged each other with joy.

Trainer John Shirreffs tossed his hat into the cheering crowd, and jockey Mike Smith scattered a shower of flower petals into the air as thousands crowded around the winners' circle.

They say that when times are tough, people need a hero. Seabiscuit filled that role during the Great Depression; Zenyatta has become the same type of hero for today's fans.

She clearly enjoys her role as superstar as she interacts with the crowd, strutting and two-stepping her way out onto the track, stopping every now and then to look around and pose for her adoring fans. Add to that the generosity of her owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, in sharing her with the people, and the result is a lovely ray of hope at a time when it most needed in horseracing.

    Debbie LA,
You and yours take care; schools are already closed in Escambia County, so we're "battening down the hatches." I thought hurricane season was over, but evidently Ida has other ideas. I do think this one will be minor, but better safe than sorry. Be sure to check in on Tuesday.

Great weekend of safe racing. Quality Road thru a similar fit before the Florida Derby but finally settled down unlike yesterday, hope he heals ok and so glad they scratched him.

Lexi needs prayers and thoughts - she is a little beagle/pitbull mix that I saved from a hell on earth shelter in Florida - she has severe pneumonia from untreated kennel cough and I am trying to save her life.

I posted this comment in the Horse Racing thread but I'm placing it here, too, for Alex or anyone else to see.

If anyone on this blog is an acquaintance of Zenyatta's owners Jerry and Ann Moss, trainer John Sheriffs, Mike Smith or knows some associates of those folks, perhaps they can pass along a request from a Zenyatta fan like me, and probably many others who would like to keep up with what's going on with her after she retires.

I'd love to see something along the lines of a Web site that follows her or a blog like "Tracking Barbaro's Brothers."

Judging by the roar of the Santa Anita spectators I bet there are lots of people like me who want to be able to follow Zenyatta's life after racing, what stallions she's bred to and the future of her foals.
