    Barbaro Updates: 975

    updates are now here.

Update 5773: Today's radio show, now archived: Alex Brown Racing on the radio. All about the upcoming Breeders' Cup, with some terrific tips for the 14 races!

And some flattering words: Bearing Witness -- the Compassion of a Dedicated Horseman.

Update 5772: A busy morning this morning at Woodbine. I had nine to gallop, four of which also went to the gate for some schooling. A couple of them were a little fired up this morning. I am guessing because of the cooler temperatures. But I managed to stay on.

Now to prepare for our 11:30 am radio show. All about the Breeders' Cup!

Update 5771: It's Wednesday, so at 11:30 am we will host our 30 minute ABR radio show: Alex Brown Racing on the radio. Lisa Grimm of Superfecta will join us to help handicap each of this weekend's Breeders' Cup races. Should be another fun show!

    And please keep calling.

Good morning FOB's! It's a beautiful "crispy" morning here in southeast PA, almost all of the leaves are off the trees and I can see deer moving through the woods.

There is a Barbaro print fundraiser being held on the discussion board to benefit Mike Rea. It is post 42089.1 in the General Non-Horse folder under the "Barbaro Print Fundraiser 4 Mike Rea" thread. (Nancy G could you please blue link?) We are selling chances on this gorgeous giclee painting of Barbaro donated by the wonderfully talented artist, Lee Mitchelson, and Mercy and I. Please support Mike as he needs funds to continue his very successful hyperbaric oxygen treatments for the traumatic brain injury he suffered in a fall from a horse he was training at Fair Hill. Insurance does not cover this great need. Mike is an ardent supporter of the FOB's, some of you may be reading his blog or posts he makes here on ABR. Times are extremely difficult for many FOB's with job losses and pets being surrendered to rescues or animal shelters, but Mike needs us now, too, and blesses you all with love from his beautiful heart for supporting him. Mercy and I thank you most sincerely.

    My best to you,
    Robin West (AccoladesMum)

The tickets are reasonably priced ($10 or 3/$25) and the deadline is DECEMBER 1st...

here is an article from cnn...

Your dog is a great food tester. If she won't eat it, you'd better not either.

No cat snores as loudly as a human.

Your cat, dog, horse or bird doesn't care if you're young or old, rich or poor, fat or thin. She loves you just as you are.

No animal has ever tortured himself by trying to be perfect.

No herd of horses or pack of hounds will ever ask you to clap your hands in unison. Nor will any animal -- even in front of a TV camera -- introduce another as "the lovely and talented ..."

Humans routinely breed past the food supply. Most animals are too smart to do this.

Some animals are monogamous. Some are not. They accept their fundamental natures. When it comes to humans, the kindest way to approach this is to understand that monogamy is contrary to nature but necessary for the greater social good.

Animals do not pay for sex.

Animals cannot damage the water table. Humans are doing this all over the world even as you read this.

No animal is ever a hypocrite.

A cat doesn't care if another cat is black or white, so along as she catches mice.

A dog may steal from you but will never lie to you.

Given their unbelievable olfactory powers -- humans have about 6 million scent receptors; a dog has about 110 million -- your dog can smell friend or foe. Your dog knows who is sexually attracted to you and vice versa. You dog knows when you are about to have a heart attack or an epileptic seizure. They can even smell illness in you even before doctors catch wind of it (i.e. cancer). The point is, trust your dog.

You can also trust your cat concerning most of the above examples as long as you realize: Dogs have owners; cats have staff.

A dog would not allow another dog to eat if it weren't in on the hunt. In the animal world, you have to pull your weight. Dogs and cats recognize mental illness in humans. Many of them can deal with it. Many of us cannot.

Horses can work well with a physically compromised person. They are very giving animals.

We are medium-size animals who survived and then flourished by hunting in packs, by cooperation. A horse is a large animal. The journey from your mind to a horse's mind is the longest journey you will ever take.

If successful, it will be one of the strongest bonds of both of your lives, one you can never really explain to another human who has not made the journey. It is a bond of deep emotional richness.

No animal will ever correct your grammar. Given that service dogs have a vocabulary of 300 or 400 words, this shows remarkable restraint on their part.

An animal knows when she is dying. However, she does not carry around the notion of her individual death. This, I believe, is the true gap between us and other sentient creatures. It is the root of our discontent, denial and search for escape.

Personally, I believe death is a greatly overrated experience. Much of it irritates me. I know when the good Lord jerks my chain, I'm going.

Animals remember. They have some concept of the simple past, but they live triumphantly in the present. Few of us do.

Most animals have a sense of humor. Horses seem to have a highly developed one. Humans routinely deny this until they find themselves the butt of the joke.

Thanks to technology, we believe we are more powerful. Take that away, and our limitations (bad night vision; no fangs or claws; long dependency of offspring; terrible slowness compared to, say, a cat; etc.) make us falter. One of the reasons we made a social contract with domesticated animals years ago was to "borrow" their power, speed, senses. In return, we feed them, care for them. We have broken this contract. They have not.

No animal will ever speak those dreadful words, "We have to talk."

Give thanks that your cat does not own a credit card. Aren't you sorry you do?

No animal will ever send you a Christmas card and expect one in return. Surely, the devil invented the Christmas card.

    JOE FOR WEDNESDAY
    **************************************************
    Tuesday, November 3rd...

Horses coming, horses leaving, we need a traffic cop at the end of our driveway.

Elaine who adopted Liberty, you wanted the chestnut pregnant mare, call me at 530-383-2120.

Michelle from Elko, I lost your number also. Michelle if you still want a pregnant quarter horse mare, give me a call.

Been a few days since I begged for help with unwanted horses. Old pregger gals. Young unbroke wild things. Private owners who must be rid of their horses. Feed lots. Every race track in California asking Tbfriends to accept horses. Rodeo horses. Auction horses. A guy in Sacramento with the name Eloy Parkins, and he refers to himself as an equine dealer, only he is really an equine killer, and right now Eloy Parkins has a field full of doomed thoroughbreds.

Many of the above horses are free. Some priced by the pound. Tbfriends is happy to arrange transportation. Once again my phone 530-383-2120.

Dozens of e-mails yesterday saying how much you enjoyed little Meagan. And could I please have more kids write about the love they have for their horses?

    Well okay then.

This letter from Cindy in Florida: I am keeping the 4 pictures of Meagan and Bear. Meagan obviously loves him. But more importantly it is easy to see how much Bear loves Meagan. Thank you for sharing their story.

Broadway found a new home with a family in Orangevale, and shipping takes place this morning. Chores are forever. A beautiful day on the way, and we could be 74 degrees. Delicious hot coffee from Dunkin Doughnuts. Cold orange juice made by Simply Orange. Enjoy your Phillies are still alive Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. Carrie Underwood on the radio...

    from our own Bobbie....Barbaro Christmas...
Let's try this to the tune of Silver Bells, to get all of us in the Christmasy mood :

    Bar - ba- ro,
    Bar- ba - ro,
    It's Rescue time
    at your website

    reins and things,
    combs for manes,
    presents for all
    your fam- ba - lee

mints to eat, meds for feet,
apples and grapes for a bite.
    hal-ters and ropes,
    blan-kets and coats,
    something for horses all,
    and carrots in every stall.

a poor effort for sure, but with love to our horses in this Christmas for Barbaro's Fans.

Hi everybody- thanks for all the well wishes for my BEar Bear. He has fought the good fight. What a dog he is. He goes every week and gets his chemo- he wags his tail when he gets blood drawn- he wags his tail when he gets an Iv of Chemicals. He jumps and whines in happiness when he sees the techs that take care of him. I got my wish a couple of months ago to be able to bring him home and spoil him before he goes. Unfortunately that time is nearing and the vet says he only has 6-8 more weeks. Right now he feels good and is very happy. He has had a short life (3 1/2 years) but he is an amazing animal. Thanks to Joan I am priviledged to have had him in my life and will cherish every last day. so Just want to say thanks for all the prayers. When heaven gets him, he will be the most cheerful one there. Jen

Jen, God bless you and Bear Bear. My Arnie had many surgeries to remove mast cell tumors (after the initial one to actually remove an ear!) and always walked into the vet's office with his head held high and tail wagging. It comforted me to know the experiences didn't stress him - he knew how much he was loved. Bear Bear knows how much he is loved. He knows he's right where he should be for his journey here, he found his best possible mom and family - thanks to Joan! Keep loving him to pieces. When he does go on ahead, a part of him will always be with you.

"Then, I recently read a book by JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER called "Eating Animals," and I just had to share it with you. He'll be here to talk to me about his experience writing it. In the book, he evaluates his own attitudes about nutrition and diet, and examines the attitudes society has about eating meat. He found out some amazing facts that you might not know about your food, so you'll want to hear what he has to say.

    ## Hello, All !

WHEW - it's a tough, tough week for me. Moving to the "ranch" and trying to get all manageable things moved myself - "big boy" movers come on Saturday morning - horses get moved on Friday.
It has heated up, again in Az - 96 degrees yesterday - which, for me, makes things more difficult. AMIGO is "off" ... going along for the rides when weather permits - and when home - not eating much. I think he and I are both having tummy stress. BUT - he got a new bed today in honor of the move -

We send our thoughts and gratitude and prayers for your mutual love affair: Jen, Clay and BearBear !

    Amigo and his Mom

Posted by: sherry at November 4, 2009 10:44 PM

But Sherry: at The New Place, where will you and Amigo go every morning to drink coffee and take a leetle pee? ( I always think of you right there, next to your pal....not, um drinking coffee together, but, uh--the other thing.

    It's innocent.
    Really.

Today there is an article in the New York Times sports section, "Barred for Drugs, Trainers Find Easy Return to Track". Apparently use of drugs at the track is widespread....why am I shocked!? I just feel sorry for the horses. I wonder how the trainer would like it if someone gave them drugs without their knowledge or approval!?

6 to 8 more weeks is so hard to hear. Most of us know the feeling too , how awful it is to have to let one go. But he goes to God - and will be out of pain and happy. I 'm so glad Joan helped in getting you to know him and be in his life. God bless.

    Alex,

Yesterday it was so difficult to read your twitter account when you were at OLEX. I know why you did it and I thank you for it. I don't know how you do it, but it is important.

Check out the video on the found Max thread..as MaryL said..saving 1 horse can make a huge difference.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, what a great story about your efforts: Bearing Witness. Thank you for all that you continue to do on behalf of North America's horses. Wishing everyone "ACN". Peace, Robyn

To Jenn: I am sorry that BearBear won't have longer to enjoy the love that you and your family have lavished upon him. Despite his illness, I consider him a very fortunate doggie. And his disposition is delightful, from all that you & Joan have shared with us. Please let BearBear know that he has friends far away, ones that he has never met, who love him very much.
To Jona Roya: I loved that quote from the excerpt in which it was said: "...animals live triumphantly in the present." And they certainly do, don't they? That was one of the lessons that Barbaro taught me. One could see it in his eyes in those photos when he would be visited by Edgar Prado, or when Dr. Richardson or Alex would take Barbaro outside for a walk at New Bolton.
To Sherry: I hope that you and Amigo don't get too tired out from your move. ####
