    Barbaro Updates: 946

    updates are now here.

Update 5615: Lava Man returns to training: Lava Man back in training.

Update 5614: Today's radio show archived: Alex Brown Racing on the radio! Bob Hatfield joined me as co-host. Andy Durnin (based in California) and Bob Chapman (Godolphin) joined us. Some good conversations. As with other shows, not without a glitch or two, but hopefully interesting horse racing discussions. We covered the races from Woodbine last weekend. Regal Ransom's win in the Super Derby and much more.

Update 5613: A busy morning this morning for me at Woodbine, and it was a muggy morning too. I had ten to gallop for Steve. Four of these also went to the gate for some schooling. All went nicely. I also galloped Hooh Why, who also went nicely. All in all a busy morning, but a decent morning's work and now to get ready for our radio show!

Update 5612: It's Wednesday, so at 11:30 am we will host our ABR radio show. 30 minutes covering horse racing news and other related topics. This week's show will cover the racing from Woodbine last weekend (Marsh Side's disqualification, Ventura's brilliance), 2yo champ Midshipman's winning return to the races, Regal Ransom's easy win in the Super Derby, and more: Alex Brown Racing on the radio.

    And please keep calling.

    Comments

Hiya, FsOB! Well, Autumn is now here, always a lovely season in southern New England. It's getting light later each AM. Alex, please hang onto those horses when you're out super early, OK?

A hearty 'good morning' to the ABR "morning shift" (Janice in FL (soon to be PA), Christian in NC, Marg in Maine, Liz in the UK, Jonna, & Nancy the Naughty Nutmegger). Wishing all a safe & productive Weds.

    #### To CJ: I hope that you can get "sprung" from the hospital very soon and be back with your kitties. ####

Famous Smokey Stover needs a Home

They wont $600.00 for him, this is One of why I get upset with horse racing.

###I'm a follower of Tranquility Farm's new blog (started in August, one year to the day that manager Priscilla Clark aided in the rescue of those 40+ mares--many in foal--from a feedlot in Arizona). She write briefly but well about some of the stars at TF and some of the adoptables.

It's tranquilityfarmtbs.org and is one of my several stops every morning when I enjoy my coffee (and try to get the eyelids to stay up on their own ;o)

###Today is an early day, covering the local board of realtors' monthly breakfast meeting. I used to get there at 6:30 Pacific Time but have lost the enthusiasm I once had. Wish "everything old" were new again (starting with ME!)

###Here's wishing a good day to all and safe journey to everyone two- and four-legged AND more fantastic rescues for all four-leggeds.

###Take names of those elected officials who have their priorities all screwed up. Boxer and Feinstein are still at the top of my list--yesterday they voted against the farmers in the Central Valley in CA and FOR the Delta smelt fish. The fish is more important than the farmers (who are now in food lines) and the crops they cannot grow TO FEED THE WORLD.

What the aitch is WRONG with these people? After elections in 2010, they'll have plenty of time to sit on their ample posteriors and figure it out.

    ###Alex, thank you.

    JOE PART ONE FOR WEDNESDAY
    **************************************************
    Wednesday, September 23rd...

On Monday I wrote about horses in trouble. More than I have ever seen before.

A big Thank You to a family in Davis who on the phone said sure, send us a gelding from a home foreclosure.

A big Thank You to Noelle and Rachel in Citrus Heights. Accepting a fresh race horse gelding with a bowed tendon. Noelle and Rachel splitting board expenses.

A big Thank You to Lisa in Livermore. Accepting a two year old from the Pleasanton race track. He is a stakes horse who was recently injured. Lisa also pays board.

A big Thank You to Caryn in Newcastle. Caryn says she would love to rehab a mexican rodeo mare. The mare is delivered later today.

A big Thank You to Mike and Jenny in Petaluma. Accepting a gelding from a private home.

A big Thank You to Rachel in Benicia. Accepting a gelding from a private home.

A big Thank You to Sienna, a student at Cal State. Sienna says send me a mexican rodeo horse who needs love and kisses. So we did.

    more to come

    Damn
Our 174th Guard F16's are flying out at all hours of the day....they usually only go out on manouvers
(sp) at 2:30pm on the dot....today, 10:11am, they are peeling off to NYC again.

Things must be scary there, yet again. General Assembly at the UN in session, terrorist cells trying plotting to blow up the NYC Subways....God what a world.

They have been on this "alert" schedule--which no one will discuss, of course--for over a week...but having lived under their take-off and approach lane for 30 years--I know, and love them well.

In March--they will be moved to TN and be replaced (?!!) with DRONES....yeah those'll be effective over NYC.

    Just shoot me now.

    JOETBFRENS PART TWO
    **************************************************
Home foreclosures. Feed lot horses. Mexican rodeo horses. Private home horses. If you can help, give me a call at 530-383-2120. We are happy to arrange transportation.

Yesterday after school, in the heat, 11 year old Taylor at our front gate. Taylor asks if she can meet Rock Star and June Bug.

Rock Star is not only starved, she is crippled. We are trying to fix those ugly feet. Her fate grim. The father of Taylor is Russ, and I told him we should skip Rock Star. Not a pretty picture, and I do not want Taylor going home with those images.

I said hey Taylor, how about meeting a cute two year old race horse who just arrived today? His name is Crane and he loves attention.

Russ says they came because Taylor wants to meet June Bug and Rock Star. It is okay. Can you bring them both to the yard?

Two starving horses in 100 degree heat, and Taylor grooms both. Gives out cookies and carrots. Taylor took lots of pictures.

Russ and Joe, standing in shade, swatting flies.

Russ says come on Taylor lets go home, Joe needs to get back to work.

As Taylor was walking to her car you should have seen crippled Rock Star. Hobbling right behind Taylor. Following Taylor down the long driveway. All the way to the car. Rock Star gave out a little cry, so Taylor hugged her again.

They hugged for the longest time.

Taylor said to me, she is not going to make it huh?

    Probably not.

Taylor said thank you for giving me this time with her.

Rock Star watched their car, even after they were far down County Road 19.

My new hero is Russ. Kids are the future for horses. Russ encourages Taylor to pursue her passion. A good guy. My day was made.

Rock Star... you can imagine how Rock Star felt.

    Joe

Top Left: This is June Bug. There is a racing tattoo which says she is 6.

Top Right: His name is Smiling King, and he is 7. I suppose we will call him King. He earned decent money as a race horse.

Bottom Left: Just a kid, only two years old. He comes from the race track and his name is El Choclo. I suppose we will call him Choc.

Bottom Right: Also two years old. His name is Downtown Crane, and we are calling him Crane. His workouts too slow for racing.

joe has made me cry again....how the hell does he go on day after day. crying little girls with broken hearts because even they can see death coming.

I feel so angry - that JOE's "kids" are this way in the first place - unbelievable human neglect and cruelty - and on the "flip" side ....... we are privileged to peek into the unbelievable kindness, compassion, courage not only of the horses - but of Taylor and her DAD .... and of course, JOE ........ tears for me too ..... quivering lip ........ trying to focus on "our" JOE and his major, kind, giving connections .... and of the profound effect that kindness - grooming - a small amount of attention - can produce - and of the long lasting effect of this amazingly "simple" acts ...... for Taylor - her DAD - Rock Star - June Bug - COPE - the girl who LOVES COPE ....... us ......... ! WHEW ! Always, for me, the "flip side" ... or .. how could I go on ??

    Morning, ABR Famblee:)

I think Russ has done an OUTSTANDING job raising Taylor....and God Love Taylor for giving Rock Star and June Bug her time, love and grooming efforts...I HATE that some of these horses find their way up Joe's long driveway...and don't make it...it tears my heart right 'outta' me...but it is so WONDERFUL to know this young generation of HORSE WARRIORS is up/coming...and we've got to thank people like Joe and Cathy Shelton and Linda Richards and so MANY other folks who put body/soul and their last dime into our AMERICAN HORSES via their own RESCUES....:)

Alright...my dears...another day of well-oiled roller skates on my feets is waiting...I did, however, manage to water the plants and re-fill the burbs/squirrels feeding dishes with those BLACK OIL SUNFLOWER SEEDS....along with re-filling a clean Honey-Bird Feeder this morning...but not with honey...just C&H sugar and water...:) I gotta make sure all my little critters are provided for before I leave...and I'm happy to announce to yole the GOLD FINCH are back in my yard...and they, too, are being provided for in the THISTLE feeder department:)

Things may seem to be going to Hell in a handbasket....what with the BLM and Cloud and the other wild mustangs...and our Bill not being voted on yet to save them all from trips over the borders to such heinous deaths....but *DELTA DAWN* is steady on her feet...she's 'talking' to anyone/everyone who will listen to her up there at Safe Haven...they cannot get those bowls of mash down on the ground before her FAST ENOUGH...:) and the burbs/squirrels in my little corner of these foothills are all happy/healthy and full of P&V...two little fawns laying right outside my back gate this morning...having a little rest..watching Aunty Lynne take care of the little ones...thingz is good at least in my immediate area...and sometimes I need to remember to stop long enough and realize that..otherwise, the Turkeys will surely get me down:(

Annnd....I know my 88 y/old neighbor man will be DELIGHTED...'cause I even took time this morning to hang up my *SAN FRANCISCO FORTY-NINERS* flag out front!! I think we might actually have a team this year...and I already know we FINALLY have a good COACH..I'm kinda excited to see this season progress!! *GOOOOOO NINERS*!!

    Everyone have a great Wednesday....

###The meeting this morning was actually pretty good--one of the speakers said he loved being with a group of people who get up early but wake up late.

I was alert enough to laugh--one of the few who did so. Coffee needs to kick in still, but it was a positive meeting with good speakers.

###Joe. Thoroughbred Friends. What can I say? I'm developing the ability to read without tears, but the tug at the heart is always there. God bless Joe, Cathy, Russ, Taylor--ALL the parents and their children--for what they are doing. They lead by example, and it just doesn't get any better (or more hopeful) than that.

We cannot save them all, as Joe says, but it won't be for lack of trying.

Just got back from tearing around running errands that have accumulated during this intense CLOUD period...I swear. Some days, I just cannot go out of the house.

    but:

    ((((harriette/john/rae))))

I am so so very sorry.

Midnight--how long and hard she must have fought. Sending them back to God: always seems impossible that we can bring ourselves to give this final, most sacred gift.

But we can, and we suck it up and do it. A kind death. If only I could be sure of such a thing....try to think of it that way.

Sending out love and support...and please tell your frens, Harriette, that the zillions of greyhounds sacrificed on the Alter of The Love of Money make wonderful companions.

They are artful in the practice of laying on their backs, grooming each other, and making deep frens wherever they go.. So Midnight will be in good company.

    ## Barb - CNN story was on here around 4:30 pm ...... I wasn't overly impressed. Jane V - the reporter - kept interrupting Chantel - who was trying to talk about the reality. I think people watching could have been left with the impression that they can go and adopt a horse - although she did refer folk to the "Cloud Foundation" web site. IMHO - the focus I wanted there to be - in the plight of the horses and the cruelty/needless acts of the BLM - was not the focus .......... HOWEVER, I would encourage comments .... lots of them - where you can emphasize what you want ...........

SHERRY - I was somewhat underwhelmed by HLN's coverage of the issue of the mustangs...on the other hand, we must be thankful for any national coverage we can get. At least the "hostess without the mostess" (imo) mentioned wanting to help and named thecloudfoundation.org

And I did love the headline "Govt's Corruption of Beauty" - a phrase I will start using in my faxes!

    Just laugh. Out loud.
    It deflates just about everything.
We just gotta keep going, and ignore the rest.
    Love you: jonna

My Lord , Jonna, I was so excited when I saw Cloud and his herd on national tv, I cried. And Sherry is right that the report was not great - they could have given info on what to do , etc - and didn't , but at least it was on nationally and I think that is going to help a lot in pressure on the BLM if nothing else. And I have worked the whole damn day on this computer and the phone, emailing , calling, well at least half the day to be exact, and then it seems like not one person even cares that Cloud is on tv ! . I know, it was dinnertime.
Its just too much sometimes, then wahh wahh ?
Perhaps I am a whiner, but I've never whined before. never. Not in 3 yrs. Its just too much.

    ## Nancy - I would agree - did I give the impression that I was sorry this happened in the first place ? IF so ..... I'll need to re-read my posts before posting. Was trying to be "fair and honest" .... disappointed in Chantel not getting to say what she wanted to ... grateful for the coverage and referral to CLOUD's web site.
    Everyone happy ?

    Sherry

Hiya, FsOB! It's good to read that a story was on CNN Headline News. I concur with Bobbie B's recommendation that those who were able to view the segment should post a comment to CNN. They probably take note of the # of comments.

Joe Shelton & Rock Star: Awesome that they were visited today by the young girl Taylor and her wonderful Dad. I agree with the person (maybe it was Lynne?) who said that there is a very fine group of young people coming up, who want to change the way that horses are treated by too many in this country. Kudos to Taylor and I hope that she can visit Rock Star again soon. The thought of Rock Star watching as Taylor headed down the highway made me remember a Barbaro story. Do you all recall that Barbaro enjoyed it when the children's schoolbus would go past the pasture at New Bolton Centre? He apparently loved it when the kids waved and called out his name.

    #### My sympathies to John & Rae in NY, who have experienced the passing of their beloved dog Midnight.
To Angel Dee: Please shine some rainbows in the direction of Hammond, IN, for our CJ, OK?
To Jonna: I find that taking a few minutes to gaze out at the river each AM really helps to centre me and remind me to appreciate the beauty of Nature. Neither Nikita nor I sense ghosts here, but there may be ghosts in both of the houses on either side.
To Janice: Thanks for your kind note. I hope that your planning for the move back to PA isn't causing you a significant amount of extra work. I can't begin to think how hard something like that would be to organize, not at this stage of my life, anyway.
To Margie in NM: Egads, please don't even say the "s" word (snow). We saw a photo in the paper, showing snow in Crested Butte. Yikes!
To Bobbie B.: It's a pleasure seeing you here, Bobbie. Please don't be a stranger, OK? I hope that your trip to the SC shore was a great one. ####

SHERRY - boy, I guess everyone's on edge...no, you did NOT "give the impression that [you] were sorry this happened..." - I was agreeing with you that the coverage was less than we could have hoped for (especially the infuriating interruptions) but I was happy for SMALL favors!

I am going somewhat 'offtopic' here...but still having to do with horses, Famblee.

I saw an interesting 'teaser' today featuring Ken Burns and his upcoming special on PBS "National Parks: America's Best Idea, which airs this Sunday night @8p and continues through the next six nights, each episode two hours long.

During the bits/pieces shown today on the Martha Stewart Show, so many of the old photographs showing the men who first 'discovered' such places as Yellowstone and Yosemite...and then as time progressed and lodges were built...roads were built...people were brought by stagecoach, even..ALL the people were on the backs of HORSES...and I just kept thinking....'LOOK AT THE HORSES...LOOK AT THE WORK THOSE HORSES DID...LOOK AT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARRIVED IN THESE PARKS ON THE BACKS OF HORSES'...yes...I am SHOUTING, you bet I am!!

Horses..I've always said this country was settled on the backs of horses...and it even includes the discovery and development of our own National Parks...and I keep wondering...dosen't anyone of the 'powers that be' ever recognize that fact..or think about that fact??

It just makes me so sad..and chaps mai hide at the same time, Famblee!

And then...HLN...a 'news' program is featuring Cloud and the 'gathering' which has taken place..so I sit down to see..and I get up and leave the TV because..and I apologize if I offend anyone with my comments..but I am so sad, ashamed, angry and again, disillusioned that seemingly the ONLY 'news' program we can catch the attention of is, to me, anyway...sort of like seeing the National Enquirer in living color on the TV screen.

I'll go to the website, I'll leave comments, hoping that perhaps a more 'mainstream' news show might actually show interest...but I'm not inclined to hold my breath, not just at this moment:(

I understand the reporter, Chantal..sorry, don't know her last name did do a very good job..I also have heard she was barely allowed to speak, so she did the best she could, and for that I thank her.

If yole might be interested in Mr. Burns' production showing all the National Parks in this country, I hope you can watch at least some of the episodes...he did say it would re-play the following week or weekend in a 'marathon' so if you miss some, you can catch up that way. It just looked so interesting and of course the photography is beautifully done..so much history to be seen and SO MANY HORSES who helped with it all!
