    Barbaro Updates: 942

    updates are now here.

Update 5597: Woodbine hosts the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile this Sunday, along with other terrific races: Rahy's Attorney Defends Woodbine Mile Crown.

Update 5596: A chilly start this morning, but it does look like it is shaping up to be another nice day. I had eight horses to gallop for Steve. And all galloped nicely. Three also went to the gate for some schooling, and schooled nicely. I also got on Hooh Why, who was pretty sharp in her gallop this morning.

Last night, on The Score's horse racing coverage from Woodbine, they did a wonderful feature on the work we are doing. I will try to get a copy on to YouTube. This morning many of the horsemen on the backside; grooms, hotwalkers, exercise riders, trainers and so forth, commented very favourably on the piece. It was a real testament to the notion that horsemen do really care about the horses with which we work. I was pretty pumped.

And for a bit of fun, spot the error!

Update 5595: The feature 3yo race this Saturday is the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs, which features West Virginia Derby winner Soul Warrior, and UAE Derby winner Regal Ransom: Soul Warrior, Regal Ransom Duel in Super 'D'.

Hoosier Park, in Indiana, has quarantined 59 horses due to a suspected case of Strangles, 2 horses have positive tests: Churchill bars Hoosier horses due to suspected disease.

    And please keep calling.

    Comments

Hiya, FsOB! I am running late, so until tonight I won't be able to read about the outbreak of Strangles amongst Indiana horses. Weird, I do recall learning something about that term in school, I think.

Wishing all a safe & productive day! Peace, RMH

    #### To Margie in NM: Please give Mike the senior Black Lab a pet for me, OK?
To Otherlyn: An arrest is imminent here in CT. I am sure that there will be more information soon about Annie Le and whether she had a pet. ####

    Good morning Robyn

Again - any of you PA FOBs - if you know of any good Horse Rescues in the Allentown area of PA - please let me know. I'd like to connect after returning to PA. I seem to recall one in Quakertown. Duh - just thought of something. I'll do a "search" on Internet.

    Have a great thursday everyone!!

    Morning, Famblee of ABR:)

Just read about Strangles...kind of like Croup in childrennnnns! Scary stuff for horse owners..and so contagious, too! I hope all the horses will be alright...there must surely be antibiotics to give them. Geesh!

    Thursday..."Friday Eve":) Yipppeeee!

Hope everyone had a good night, and will be having a good day today as well.

###Strangles is no fun, and oddly enough a lot of owners (and some veterinarians) do not give the vaccine as a matter of course.

There is also pigeon fever, aka dry-land strangles, that has no vaccine. That one is particularly bad because it is not confined to the nasal passages with pockets of infection under the jaw.

I'm not sure that it is caused by pigeons, either. It's just this bacterium that's "everywhere."

My vet gives strangles vaccine as a matter of course. He doesn't ask, "Do you want it?" He's a good guy.

Seems to me if someone is skimping and trying to save money in the racing game, feed, shoeing and health (horsekeeping, in other words) would NOT be the places to cut back.

    Just sayin'.

Do without the latte in the morning and cut back on the donuts, etc. Put the money where you stand to make more -- in the health and well-being of the four-legged at the track.

    Like, duh. ;o)

###Have just read the update regarding Cloud and the gathering up of the horses and I am so sick at heart about the tragedy of this whole thing. I can't bear to think of their fate.

####Roybn, happy to see you here this a.m.; of course you're missed.
###JaniceinFlorida, I hope your move goes smoothly and you find horses nearby.
###Dee, so much despair here but your inspiring rainbows always lift us. Thank you.

Just read that it's been three years since the Fog left us. RIP Foggy and Harry too.

    Have a safe day everyone.

Jonna. I usually stay about 2 yrs. behind on modern stuff. I never know what is in style in clothes and really dont care. I had 4 labs and never went anywhere without dog hair on me. Before I went to work I would use one of those hair rollers on me and then run to the front door. Well, that didnt help much as my car was covered in hair anyway.
I stay about 2 yrs behind on new technical stuff. About the time I learn how to use it something new is in.
Being from Texas my favorite music is country western . I do like classical music and my favorite is Avia Maria. I always put that on during thunderstorms for Cheif. It seemed to help calm him down.
I guess I will stop this rambling around and try to do something constructive.

    **************************************************
    Thursday, September 17th...

Big congratulations to Ryan and Melanie on the adoption of their new filly Pebbles.

Big congratulations to Tony and Elizabeth on the adoption of their new gelding Frosty.

Big congratulations to Amber on the adoption of her new gelding Mars Bar.

This e-mail from Heather in Nebraska: I was searching the internet for a dating service and Tbfriends appeared.

(ooops, sorry. Would you like a horse?)

This e-mail from Nicole: I will trade you my beat up ranch truck for your white gelding Frosty.

(see above... Frosty already has a new home. I can instead offer you a cat who pees on our couch. Reason number 42 why no one wants to watch TV with us)

This phone message from horse killer Wade Giles: Your website sucks.

This phone message from no name given: Is this who I call for a flu shot?

A big Thank You to Anne and Shelly for all the treats. And a special hello to their giant dog Basil.

A big Thank You to Allison, Anna, and Rachel. Wonderful Papa Murhphys pizza with triple cheese and mushrooms.

A big Thank You to Christine for John Lyons senior feed from Costco. Good stuff.

A big Thank You to Shannon from Pioneer High School.

It is Thursday, and chores are forever. Delicious hot coffee made by Dunkin Doughnuts. Just as good the next morning, pizza from Papa Murphys. The Beach Boys on the oldies station. Enjoy your temps rising Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. Flies starting their engines...

    Joe

    Recent arrivals

Top Row: Say hello to a Rock Star. She is probably 4 years old. Rock Star was rescued with funds provided by a teen girl in Elverta. A sweet filly. Rock Star had a really good day yesterday.

Bottom Left: He was purchased from the feed lot in Wilton, and there is a racing tattoo which says he is 12. We have named him Malibu.

Bottom Right: This is Sam, and he came to us last weekend from an event barn. Also a former race horse, Sam is 8. A nice guy to be around.

Jonna, thanks for thinking of us. I have owned and loved many dogs in my life. Most champion show dogs and I loved them all. But the little mutt I found in the icey ditch one morning became my soulmate. I had some obedience champions as well as comformation champions. Chief was the smartest dog I ever owned. It was like talking to a person. I carried on conversations with him on and off all day. His vocabulary was limited except for the word cookie.
I got him as a pup. Mad at the world and hated and feared ther world. Took about 2 years to get him over that. I am so proud of him overcoming his fear of people and become a very loving dog. It was him not me that did it. The plumber came this week and wanted to know where Chief was and I told him. He said how am I going to work without his head in my way. I thought he was going to cry.
Well, I guess I have made this a long posting but just needed to talk to people who understand.
God Bless you all for Getting It.

Dear (((Sandra&Chief))), The wonderful thing about our 'heart' dogs, they are always with us. Chief knows he has a secure, safe place in the heart of the human who saved him and loves him. That safe place will be his forever. Because he knows that, he's probably hard at work picking just the right doggie to send your way to keep you company and brighten your days. No one to replace him - never! - but someone to share the love and care he knows you have to offer. Someone to entertain you with a whole new personality. We all know only too well (and as Mrs. Jackson said), grief is the price we pay for love. You'll never stop loving Chief and may always grieve for him, but I know you will love another because, Sandra, you Get It! I BELIEVE!!!

Perhaps it is the same with horses as it is with elephants. They will not lay down to sleep if they are afraid or feel threatened.

God. I did not believe how bad this poor girl's condition is. She has more flesh on her face than on the entire rest of her poor body.

People truly suck. It seems that for every Linda and Lynne and Joe and Cathy and Ginger Kathrens there are a 1,000 people who are capable of doing something like letting an animal suffer and get to this condition...

    On this day...remembering:

"Hay, Fren," he heard in a robust whinny. " We never meeted in the days of the otherplace, but, even there I heard lottsa good stuff 'bout you."

The Young Prince stood up and looked in the direction from which the whinny had come. In the distance he saw someone standing at the crest of a hill. Beyond the crest and behind the silhouetted someone, a mist danced up from he depths of the cool valley below.

Stepping forward, yet glancing a bit over his shoulder, the stranger said,

"We'll be frens. Our otherfrens would like that. Makes 'em happy to think 'bout that kinda stuff, ya know. I like to make 'em happy."

His smile was genuine. His eyes were dark and kind, with a "funny face" twinkle of humor there. He turned his head to meet the Young Prince's gaze straight on, as the two walked closer to each other. The stranger had a flashy white blaze the whole length of his dark bay face. It was a handsome face, even though the blaze was quite off center.

The Young Prince smiled and moved his ears a bit. There was something oddly familiar about this stranger...who was not a stranger at all. He had never seen his face or form. He was certain that they had never run in the same race, yet in a nagging, remote, intangible way, they HAD.

Something in a part of his heart was connected to the heart of this big dark horse from the misty valley. The "funny-face" Prince said,

"Yeh, I know...they loved the botha us. My people talked 'bout you with great 'miration. For awhile there, I hardly ever ran without hearing your name said by someone, or in a blood dream, or in a heartsong on the wind. Lottsa our frens had you'n'me in their songs. Lotsavum found me cuzza you. Sure am gladdameetcha."

There was a poignant moment, when they touched noses, breathing each other's breath. Then stood close to each other, each resting his head on the other's back. Two old souls from opposite ends of the otherplace were reunited in frenship. They stood quietly grazing for a short while, then he said to the Young Prince,

"Hay, Gotta run..." the Young Prince was nearly ready for another breeze breeze; to finally run a race with this familiar stranger, but then the stranger continued...

"...I'm meeting a filly near the waterfall on the pine island. There are no geldings, here ya know."

    He winked and said,

    "Catch ya later."

The Young Prince nodded up and down, then shook his head, as his fren turned and trotted back down the hill, and into the fog...

    RIP, LOST IN THE FOG.

Missing you. Loving you, and loving BARBARO.

While Cloud was running for his life, BLM employees were awash with double-time pay
    by R.T. Fitch

    Mustangate; Yet another chapter

It appears that the more you study the BLM’s bumbled round-up of Cloud’s herd in the Pryor Mountains the more it just doesn’t look, taste or smell right. Every action, each flawed decision leaves an after taste of possible corruption, collusion and derision in the mouth of American tax payers.

It was bad enough that the round up, conveniently, occurred while our elected representatives were in recess but the fact that the bulk of it took place across and over the Labor Day weekend adds even greater lack of transparency to the ill-conceived operation.

Several minor talking points would be that large portions of Federal Recreation areas were closed off before, during and after one of the biggest holiday weekends of the year (not to forget that hunting season started only days earlier)

Secondly, it was almost impossible to contact major news agencies, animal welfare advocates and law makers over the federal holiday and finally…drum roll please:

Jim Sparks and crew pocketed doubletime and overtime while harrassing Cloud's herd

Jim Sparks and crew pocketed double-time and over-time pay while harrassing Cloud's herd

The BLM agents were paid double-time on Labor Day and over-time on Sunday, the day before, and YOU the American public got to pick up the bill on this boondoggle.

Yup, while Cloud and his family were running for their lives, down the mountain, BLM agents were dipping their hands even deeper into your pockets and laughing all the time. See how profitable hunting down innocent mustangs can be? There is big bucks for the BLM in stripping our native wild horses from our public lands and it’s just not the big boys, with special interests, who make out but the field agents get a slice of the pie too and you get to pay for it all. That really leaves one with a warm and fuzzy feeling, doesn’t it?

Just as we said, the closer you look the more it stinks so wake up America; you are getting ripped off in more ways than one. The BLM needs to be held accountable on many levels from the mismanagement of funds to the disposition and location of imprisoned horses; but this little morsel is just too much for us to swallow.

Call your elected representatives, today, and demand a moratorium on all round ups until the BLM’s processes and procedures can be adequately audited, reviewed and assessed.

“Mustangate” is alive and well and lives in a BLM office near you!

    DEAR GOD (AND FOBs)
...please donate to help Delta Dawn! Every little bit counts in this nightmarish situation.

For those of you who are squeamish about seeing a horse who is truly only ONE on the Henneke scale, I'll summarize the story:

Delta Dawn was dumped in a man's pasture one month ago...yes, she would have looked even worse then, hard as it is to imagine! He has been feeding her and even floated her teeth, and now she has been brought to Linda Richards at Safe Haven in CA.

I know times are tough and the demands increase daily, but this sweet mare really deserves some FOB lovin'...AND DONATIONS! Linda had a horse this emaciated in the past and successfully brought that one back to health...and a forever home. Please join me in giving Delta Dawn the same chance!

If you'd rather not see her pictures on the thread I linked (suffice it to say her head looks MASSIVE on her poor bony body...), the PayPal address for donations is safehavenhorse@gmail.com

All donations will be so gratefully received...if everyone does a little, we'll have a lot for sweet Delta Dawn!

Alex I know you don't read all the post. But for the past 4 years you have provided a place to fight to stop horse slaughter, rescue horses and to retired X race horses. It is a big thing you started, not that we have agreed along the way. But we have come along way in helping the horses.
Just a note of thanks for what we have done and continue to do with the horse. If not for you, we and all the others would not have been here! And it was all about Barbaro. OTHERLYN - I just saw your tribute above and well that was just totally sublime, a beautiful thought to keep in my heart this night, thank you!

My heart breaks in a million pieces thinking of CLOUD & HIS HERD, and like many of you what hurts even more is that this even came to pass.

Am drooping fast tonight . . . but needed to come to this special place tonight . . .

Holding hands, hooves, and paws with the entire Barbaro Nation.
Prayers continue always for everyone here, two- and four-legged, for those facing mountains, walking the darkest valleys, those cloaked in deepest mourning for those who have gone before . . .

BRAVO to you, JONNA!! You rock!!

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, three years since Lost in the Fog passed. It's hard to believe. I never had even heard of LITF until he became ill. I was so honoured to get an e-mail from Mr. Aleo's daughter when that fine gentleman himself passed on. My thanks to Debbie LA for reminding us of LITF. Funny thing, now, whenever I see fog, I think of LITF. I am very grateful that Otherlyn reposted her piece in honour of him.

Alex, I echo Debbie's thanks to you for keeping this site alive. Do you have an updates as to how Mine That Bird is recovering from his surgery for epiglottis?

May Rock Starr, Malibu, and Sam survive and thrive under Joe & Cathy Shelton's care. Wishing everyone ACN. Peace, RMH

    #### To Judy Scott: Thanks for your kind words!
To Sandra: There was a beautiful rendition of Ave Maria sung at Senator Kennedy's funeral. I can't recall the outstanding mezzo soprano's name, but she had sung at one of the Bush inaugurations. I mourn your separation from Chief's physical being, Sandra. Chief obviously had many friends, those of us who'd never met him in person, as well as the plumber. Poor Mr. Plumber, it's clear that he loved Chief, too, and missed seeing him today.
To Angel Dee: Your rainbows are a great gift to us all, Dee. ####
