    Barbaro Updates: 940

    updates are now here.

Update 5589: Paulick Report on Keeneland's second day: LIVE BLOGGING THE 2009 KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE: DAY TWO.

Update 5588: Sue McMullen with European news:

Confirmation today that the BC Classic remains a possibility for Europe's superstar Sea The Stars or, as he is now known somewhat graphically at Ballydoyle 'Sea His Arse' following the Cape Cross' colt continued dominance over the Ballydoyle armoury.

Maestro John Oxx today confirmed that the brilliant five-time Group One winner (2,000 Guineas, Derby, Eclipse, Juddmonte International and the Irish Champion Stakes) will most likely head to Santa Anita if the ground at Longchamp rules him out of a tilt at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

"If we miss the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe", said Oxx, "then we will obviously have to look at the two races that are left for him - the Champion Stakes at Newmarket or Santa Anita, where it would probably be the Breeders' Cup Classic rather than the Breeders' Cup Turf.

"The horse tells you what you are going to do, he has to be in good form and give us the right signals. It's very late in the year for a horse that has had a run in the 2000 Guineas but if he missed the Arc, then we would have to consider going to America.

"There hasn't been any final decision but it's highly unlikely that he will be in training next season. We haven't actually got as far as discussing it and we are just taking one race at a time. We are enjoying it while it is going on and that will be a decision for another day, probably in a month's time.

"The ratings are there in black and white and his performances are there for all to see. You would have to say that he is by far the best horse in training. Aidan (O'Brien) has some very, very good horses this year, probably among the best he has ever had with the likes of Fame And Glory and Rip Van Winkle, but Sea The Stars has been able to deal with them with some degree of comfort.

"Under performance would get him beat or bad luck in running or some strange thing happening but, if everything went according to plan and he stays in shape, he's obviously going to be very, very hard to beat."

Although he looks unlikely to line up, Sea The Stars guaranteed himself a place in the $3 million Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf with his victory in the Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes.

The Leopardstown contest is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge - an international series of 63 races whose winners earn qualifying positions into a corresponding race at the World Championships, following the payment of applicable entry fees on October 26.

There are 11 Challenge races held in Europe this year, with the next events taking place at Ascot on September 26. The three Ascot contests are the Group Two Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (winner receives a place in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf), the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile (winner receives a place in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf) and the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, one of Europe's premier all-aged mile contests, for which the victor will be guaranteed a place in the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile.

Meanwhile trainer Freddie Head revealed today that last season's TVG Breeders' Cup Mile winner Goldikova, one of the best fillies to race in Europe in recent years, is on course for the $2 million contest again this year (at Santa Anita on November 7) and will have her prep run over seven furlongs in the Group One Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Saturday, October 3.

The four-year-old put in an outstanding performance to beat subsequent Group One winner Aqlaam by six lengths in the Group One Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques Le Marois at Deauville on August 16, her sixth success in Group or Grade One company.

Goldikova holds entries in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on September 26 and the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday, October 3, but Head has decided to keep the filly at home for her next start.

"Goldikova will be running in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp and then, providing she runs well, she will be heading to Santa Anita," said Head.

"She is very well at the moment and I am very pleased with her. We decided that the best way to target her at the Breeders' Cup would be to run her at Longchamp rather than going to Newmarket or Ascot.

"She could still return to Britain next season if all goes well on her next two starts."

Update 5587: University of Delaware have written a very cool profile of me: Alex Brown, BE '92 MBA.

Update 5586 - Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

As much as I like to complain that the racing industry often Gets It Wrong, the Breeders' Cup did two Very Good Things this week (and it's only Tuesday). First, they announced that a race will be airing live between two college football games on October 10th - and while I don't personally see the point of college football (or, really, any football that largely involves the hands), this is a very smart marketing move. Depending on how things shake out, we should have a chance to see either Zenyatta or Mine That Bird in a Breeders' Cup prep.

There will be a good schedule of racing shown October 10th on ESPN in any event (the Goodwood, the Lady's Secret, the Oak Tree Mile, the Shadwell Turf Mile and the Dixiana Breeders' Futurity), but getting at least one of those races out to a new audience is a welcome gesture. It's a shame it couldn't have been the Woodward, but it's a step in the right direction.

The second Good Thing is the launch of Breeders' Cup 360 - it may be aimed primarily at bettors, but it's full of plenty of great content and it's powered by our favorite racing engine, Raceday 360. There's plenty of opportunity for commentary and discussion and it's got a fantabulous layout and design - full marks for everyone involved!

The flip side to all the good news was the very strange outcome of the Prix Vermeille over the weekend, in which the winning filly, Dar Re Mi, was disqualified to fifth - leaving the pre-race favorite Stacelita undefeated. The reasoning was that she interfered with the fifth-place horse, but I would challenge anyone to find anything amiss with the ride - it's certainly not one of those 50/50 calls. Both fillies will likely still point to the Arc - but as impressive as Stacelita has been so far this season, in my mind, she's certainly not undefeated anymore. And if the ground comes up soft in Paris on October 4th, Stacelita, a fan of the wet stuff, may well be the victor - for Sea the Stars won't run if it's damp. In that case, we'd be more likely to see him in the Breeders' Cup in November - but in any event, the race for the Arc has gotten very interesting indeed.

Update 5585: Yet another gorgeous morning this morning for training horses at Woodbine. I had six to gallop for Steve, and all galloped nicely. I also went to the track to watch Salty work, he looked in good form under his jockey, Luis Contreras. Once I was finished I went over to get on Hooh Why, who also went nicely. A very straightforward morning's work.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

David Clark, jockey. David Clark is one of the senior jockeys in the jocks room at Woodbine, just count the wrinkles! David is originally from England (I did not know that), he has won multiple Queen's Plates, has won a Soveriegn Award and more than 1,400 races at Woodbine. David's main clients include Josie Carroll, Bob Tiller.

Update 5584: ABR weekly Facebook Group e-mail: Tweet This: Canadian-bred sale, Steve Asmussen, Gone West, ABR Radio, Rachel Alexandra, Steve Asmussen, Passion Rules number 5,000, Lady Attack, Ajax Downs, Delaware Park, Sea The Stars, Brett Favre, Thistledowns.

FAMBLEE? what are we going to do....throw our hands up in the air, sit back and let them do this? OR ARE WE GOING TO GIVE THEM HELL...

Fight for their freedom! let them be free to live and die on THEIR LAND....our LAND.

Please feel free to forward this to your group. This is Conquistador, the magnificent stallion of the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range. We all need to mount a cry to Washington like they have never heard before on behalf of Conquistador and the other members of the herd we would like to see live out the remaining part of their lives in their home. This is from Elyse Gardner, the independent humane observer who was on site for the gather. She has said that I may forward her note. The mantra is still: Call the president, call the first lady, call your Senators and tell them, tell your neighbors, friends, coworkers, anyone who will listen. Refer them to http://www.thecloudfoundation.org/

Come to Capital Hill on September 29th (ck the blog tomorrow 9/15 - http://thecloudfoundation.wordpress.com/)to protest the CAPTURE OF CONQUISTADOR, HIS FAMILY, AND THE OTHER OLDER HORSES WHO ARE NOW STANDING IN BLM PENS. Those plans are becoming solid as I write this....Stay tuned as we turn the attention of America to its wild horses.

    --valerie

FYI, here is Conquistador. We need to mount a campaign to get these older horses released.

I took these photos, apologizing to him, just after Conquistador and his family were captured on Commissary Ridge early that Sunday morning, September 6, crammed in the trailer with his family, stoically awaiting transport down the mountain. They don't want to release him because he would probably go back to the Forest Service land. Forest Service doesn't want wild horses on their land.

Conquistador is a 19-year-old band stallion whom Cloud was privileged to fight as a young, 4-year-old-bachelor stallion trying to win his own band of mares. Conquistador is considered a lawbreaker: he dwelt with his family in the lush Custer National Forest, part of the National Forest Service land. Wild horses are not permitted on Forest Service land, but cows are welcome and plentiful. The ranchers pay $1.35 per cow per month to let them graze there, and $1.35 for cow/calf combination also. They wanted to remove every wild horse from the Forest Service land. Conquistador is now in danger of being sold, and though it is unlikely (at least immediately), he could legally be sold for slaughter. He is magnificent. I am brokenhearted for Conquistador.

A 19-year-old band stallion is not a good candidate for adoption. You don't put a horse like this in a pen. He is not a good potential trail horse; he is Conquistador.

We need to clamor for his release. Gelding him at this age could, probably would, jeopardize his life. He is a noble, compassionate father and wild stallion who deserves to live out his life with his family on the range.

Please send your letters and make calls. The people and numbers to call are embedded in Ginger Kathrens' short video clip about the lame foals on the homepage of Thecloudfoundation.org. (It's at the end of the video back on the mountain the day after the horses were released. ) That video clip is also a GREAT one; it shows the limping, footsore foal and burnt-out band of horses back up on the mountain after their release.

The noble Conquistador, no match for the world's greatest predator: man.

    UPDATE... Late Monday Afternoon...

I am not able to write anything for Tuesday morning. (the crowd stands and roars) Chores are piling up, both on our ranch and the ranch where I have employment. I thought okay, maybe I could write the Tuesday website late Monday night. But no one wants to read my gunk without Peets first kicking in. So I will return bright (well maybe not bright) and early Wednesday morning. Sorry about missing Tuesday. Have a happy day, and be sure to hug your horses. I am thankful for music. The smell of rain. Half price pet food at Costco. I am especially thankful for readers of this website who help both humans and horses. Each day becomes a treat... Joe

Good morning to you too Jonna.

I think our turn out is going to surprise a few people in this America we live in today.

Thank you to you and your group for helping us turn our collective American face toward the American wild mustang, who is in serious trouble and needs our help. Today's CF blog, which I included in my email to you last night, should eventually have more details up if they are not there already.

BTW...the pictures I sent to you are the photographs of Elyse Gardner, the independent humane witness who was there.

The picture of Conquistador through the trailer bars is absolutely haunting as is the confusion on the face of the beautiful 2 y.o. filly of his.

Looks like maybe 'my' Senator Feinstein, CA is at least looking into the BLM Round-Up..I just got the following sent to me via another of Barbaro's WARRIORS:

    Cloud Capture Draws Capitol Attention

    By Steven Long

U.S. Senator Eyes Removing Agency’s Mustang Oversight

HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The hasty labor day “gather” of the iconic equine star of the PBS “Nature” series, Cloud, has sparked interest and consternation from coast to coast as wild horse lovers rally to put a halt to Bureau of Land Management “gathers” on the nation’s public lands.

Several horses, including Cloud, were released lame after being chased down a 5,000 foot mountain by a low flying helicopter. The famed Mustang’s popular image has been celebrated in two best selling reproductions by Breyer. A third set of the collectables will be released in time for the Christmas shopping season.

Only 120 members of the herd will be allowed by the BLM to remain in this area of Montana's Pryor Mountain wilderness encompassing nearly 40,000 acres. The BLM currently claims to hold 33,000 horses captured in gathers in holding pens. No outside agency has been allowed to do a census.

Protests are planned for a meeting of the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board in Washington September 28-29. Protests

Louisiana Sen. Mary Landieu, a horsewoman, said that if the BLM doesn’t change its ways and stop the gathers and helicopter stampedes she is considering supporting legislation to remove management of wild horses from the agency.

“She’s really fed up with the BLM right now and she’s thought about maybe possibly moving the (wild horse) program from them to another agency,” the Landrieu aide told Horseback Magazine. “That goes to show her frustration with how this program is mismanaged

“The GAO put out a report last year citing the utter mismanagement of this program,” she said. “They spend three fourths of the BLM budget on this program, and as you know, they run a whole slew of other programs.”

Landrieu serves on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee with provides oversight for America’s public lands.

Key senators besides Landrieu who will influence the nation’s wild horse policy are New Mexico’s Jeff Bingeman, California’s Diane Feinstein, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Navada, the aide said.

Reid, an enabler of the hated Burns Amendment which removed protection from wild horses has expressed concerned regarding the Restoring our American Mustangs Act, or ROAM. In the past the senator, who polls indicate is highly unpopular in his home state, has been no friend of wild horses. He is in a tight race for re-election.

In minutes of meetings of BLM managers secreted out of the agency earlier in the year, discussions of the euthanasia of thousands of horses captured in gathers were held. The talks were prompted by an agency running out of funds to operate its wild horse program. In the discussions, the prospect of psychiatric counseling of veterinarians who would perform the killing of innocent horses was discussed. The disposal of thousands of horse carcasses was also studied by the agency.

When news of the planned equicide leaked it provoked a tidal wave of anger at the agency among horse lovers and the general public prompting the agency to put the killing on hold.

Critics say wild horses have lived off the land just like moose, elk, antelope, big horn sheep, and deer without serious depletion of the herds for hundreds of years because of natural selection. Yet despite their wild status in fact and American lore, the agency doesn’t classify the equines as wildlife which would enjoy protection.

The aide, who declined to be identified, said the likely agency the senator would target for new management responsibilities for wild horses should Landrieu move in that direction would be the National Park Service because of an excellent record handling a limited number of wild horses that agency already oversees.

The BLM, along with the U.S. Forest Service, is currently required by law to manage wild horses on public land.

This is from an article in Horsetalk Magazine. www.horsetalkmagazine.com

I have emailed both Senators, Boxer and Feinstein this morning, along with the Committee of Natural Resources.

I pointed out to all of them, the 'idiocy' of anyone thinking the 13 older horses can ever 'possibly' become 'Trail Buddys' or 'companion animals'....they have been wild since birth...omgoodness, Famblee..my blood pressure is that of Mt. Vesuvius!

    No Voice = more Slaughter

    Dear Friends,

We have witnessed our Country’s “call to action” for Cloud’s Herd fall on the deaf ears.

Please watch the latest video on Cloud here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eH6g4x4CKs

With legislators back in Congress, it’s time to advance our efforts with a vow to stand committed until our American horses are safe.

The passage of The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (S727/HR503) is a hot issue with the American people and we have to strike while the iron is hot.

Please call your U.S. Representative and your two U.S. Senators :

Tell them that it’s time to end the horrible suffering of our American horses. Horse Slaughter is not Humane Euthanasia. It is slaughter and it must end.

Tell them that although our three remaining slaughter houses have closed, our horses are suffering the most brutal and inhumane treatment as they travel to Mexico and Canada for slaughter.

Tell them that doing nothing, is turning a blind eye to this brutal and corrupt practice and will NOT be popular with the American people. We strongly encourage the Senator/Representative to weigh in on this issue. No voice equals more slaughter.

    Note:

For those of you who already called your legislators, you can help us out immensely by calling our target list below:

    Dearest, dear, dear Joan

PLEASE don't assume that because there are few who post on this main board, that there is no calling, faxing, emailing.

    FAMBLEE:

All day I have waited for some basic idea of how many FoBs there are. I have asked two sources. I have heard nothing.

This information is for Valerie Kennedy PR for the Cloud Foundation! It for some idea of how many Conquistador T-Shirts they need to order. They are ordering and THEY WANT TO INCLUDE THE FOBS!

I know we say "2,000" But I know there are not 2,000 peeps who will buy this shirt. OR; PROVE ME WRONG!!!

    SOMEBODY!
    PULEEEZE!
CAN SOMEONE come up with a number?

    AS USUAL: THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH;

    Famblee:

Here's the deal: Among other things that the Cloud Foundation is working on is FINDING A GREAT CELEB SPOKESPERSON/SUPPORTER, ETC ETC.

Maekendra said they have individual teams working on peoples like robert redford, viggo (yum yum) mortensson, johnny depp, cheryl crowe, willie nelson, paul sorvino, and more.

    These people are:
    out of town A LOT,
protected by an army of entourage,
    and/or busy with their jobs.

BUT: As I had hoped and known in my heart, THE CLOUD FOUNDATION IS ON IT.

Maekendra asked that WE write: She will supply addresses as they get them--usually these people's agents....

    Here's two:

    Robert Redford
    lindsay.ferrero@pmkbh.com

    Johnny Depp
    arturc@unitedtalent.com

SO GO HERD!! Write those agents!

I am so moved that Christine returned my call, got me in touch with the right person--all GREAT women (one great guy, lol...)--and that they think the FoBs ROCK.

SO: on we march: and we got an answer to a question many of us had, re the celebrity folks.

    I love my FoBs: j

Hiya, FsOB! Sorry that I have been so busy that I couldn't post an entry since yesterday AM. Someone asked yesterday if anyone has an address for or can otherwise reach Paul Sorvino. I think that Lucille Matte or Mayor Paula Bacon may be able to do so.

May everyone here have ACN. I am exhausted from a project at work and may not be able to "seize the day" here in the AM, but please know that I am always here in spirit. Peace, RMH

    #### To CJ: I hope that your week is going well. I had a nice visit from my neighbour's very active black and white tuxedo cat the other day. He is very, very playful and is named "Smoky", but I call him "ole krazy kat". I think of you and Nancy, our Naughty Nutmegger, whenever either of the local cats visit me.
    #### To Sandra: Sorry to see that your car is needing service. Mine will need brakes soon, argh. Ms. Nikita sends you her love.
To Angel Dee: Sending rainbows right back to you!
To Joan Roya, I wish that I could go to DC on 09/29, but I cannot do so due to work and expenses as the Fall approaches.
To Rosemarie/Ro & Brady: Great seeing you here! ####

From the Paulick report......a Giant's Causeway colt selling for 5 grand? That's enough to make me want to get into the game. Yipes!

Could be the next great bargain in racing..........after all, wasn't Seattle Slew a $17,000 yearling?

    wow.....

    ## jonna - all -
I am in and out of checking. Out showing homes - trying to make sales - BUT - always checking in once, twice or more daily ........ YES, jonna - I want a Conquistador shirt - what do I have to do ..... ? Trying to keep up ....... in process of putting my house on the market - and moving BACK to my mini ranch early November - cannot stand not having the boyz out the door any longer ! In prep for showing homes - had big deal car wash and oil change yesterday - 2 hours later - my driveway was "colored" with 2+ quarts of oil !! The guys came out in the dark to address the problem - fortunate for them and me the engine didn't blow up enroute home ...... and this morning they came to clean driveway - which still looks crappy - as house goes on market - they'll have to come back .... !
    SO - YES - I AM HERE - ALWAYS - even IF I don't always post !
