    Barbaro Updates: 951

    Posted September 30, 2009

    updates are now here.

Update 5639: Rachel Alexandra has been enjoying a little break, and will now head down to Churchill Downs. Spinaway winner Hot Dixie Chick is also enjoying a break: Rachel 'Doing Great,' Ships to Ky. Tuesday.

Update 5638: Today's show, now archived: Alex Brown Racing on the radio.

Had a panic at the beginning, phone and computer failed. But it got sorted out and does not appear to have impacted the show. Lisa Grimm (Superfecta) joined Bob and I and we covered the upcoming "Super Saturday" at Belmont Park and Sunday's Arc in Paris.

Update 5637: Weekly contribution to Eclipse Magazine (UK): Alex Brown 29 September 2009.

Update 5636: It's Wednesday, so at 11:30 am we will host our 30 minute radio show: Alex Brown Racing on the radio!

Lisa Grimm of Superfecta will join us and we will look forward to "Super Saturday" at Belmont Park this weekend with five Grade 1 races. The marquee race of those five is the Jockey Club Gold Cup which will feature Summer Bird, Quality Road and Macho Again, among others. We will also review the Arc and other races from Paris this weekend. Sea The Stars and Goldikova are scheduled to run, in different races.

    And please keep calling.

    updates are now here.

Update 5635: Cool coverage of our TV debut on The Score: Racing insider's work saving horses highlighted.

Update 5634: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

While Lava Man is working toward a comeback, the equally hard-knocking
Better Talk Now is finally heading for retirement. Better Talk Now was aiming for another G1 win in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic coming up this weekend, but he injured a suspensory ligament while training; he'll be looking at a comfortable retirement instead of more racing. With Lava Man's reservation at Old Friends canceled and Kona Gold's stall at Kentucky Horse Park sadly vacated last week, there are plenty of appealing options for Better Talk Now's future.

Also preparing for retirement is Champs Elysees; he has one more race left on his schedule, the Canadian International at Woodbine, before he joins big brother Dansili at stud in England. The new economic realities of the breeding game had kept the son of Hasili in training this year, rather than heading to an immediately lucrative stud career; Bill Finley hopes this also delays the flight to the breeding shed for horses including Summer Bird and Sea the Stars. (It must be particularly tricky for Summer Bird to find a stud 'gig' at the moment - who would want to stand him, despite his accomplishments so far this year, when his sire commands a mere $10,000 a pop? Hopefully, that fact alone should keep him in training next year).

There was some rather exciting racing this past weekend, both here and abroad; Indian Blessing held off Sara Louise in what has to be one of the most thrilling finishes the Gallant Bloom has ever seen. One hopes both will aim for the Filly & Mare Sprint, since they seem to be worthy adversaries. Meanwhile, at Ascot, Rip Van Winkle proved he is more than an afterthought to Sea the Stars with a determined win in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. This victory is setting him up for a run at the Breeders' Cup Classic (following last year's winning 'European Milers Take 1-2 in the Classic' formula) - it's a shrewd move since it avoids Goldikova and allows him to keep his solid miler status intact.

Rip Van Winkle's great rival, Sea the Stars, is still on target for the Arc on Sunday - it's highly unlikely he would come to California after his Paris run, but it's still not been entirely ruled out. We'll look at the Arc in more detail later this week, but it's hard not to chuckle a bit at the British outrage that some of the Arc undercard will not be broadcast on terrestrial television - imagine being able to see the Arc itself on even a normal cable channel in the US!

Tomorrow, I'll be discussing the Jockey Club Gold Cup on Alex Brown's radio show - tune in to hear our thoughts on Summer Bird, Quality Road and the other likely entrants!

Update 5633: Better Talk Now, who was preparing for a start this weekend at Belmont, is now retired: Better Talk Now Retired Due to Injury.

Update 5632: Another fall morning at Woodbine, but at least it stayed dry. Dry and windy with the sun shining through. I had eight to gallop for Steve. And again we sent everything to the main track as the training track (dirt surface) was likely not very good. It seemed everyone else had the same idea as the track was very busy. All mine galloped nicely for a pretty straightforward morning's work!

Update 5631: This week's ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Tweet this: El Prado, Summer Squall, USTA and Harness Racing Museum and HOF, 30 PA Positives, Lava Man, Smokey Stover, ABR Radio, Falling off, Cryptoclearance, Woodbine ABR features, Kona Gold, The Pamplemousse, Selene Stakes, Colin Wicks, Indian Blessing and Sara Louise. .

    Barbaro Updates: 949

    Posted September 28, 2009

    updates are now here.

Update 5630: Steve Haskin takes his weekly look forward to the Breeders' Cup with a focus on the European runners who will be competing this weekend in France. They include Sea The Stars and Goldikova: Countdown to the Cup: Arc Weather Looks Good.

Update 5629: An easy morning for Steve at Woodbine this morning with only 6 to gallop. But it got increasingly wet and blustery as fall weather arrived. All mine galloped nicely. My last one went to the gate for a little schooling, and he schooled nicely. I also went over to see Hooh Why, who was third in the Selene Stakes on Saturday. She looked good after her race.

Update 5628: Last weekend was a quiet weekend for major horse racing. This week California racing returns to Santa Anita for the Oak Tree meet: Desert Code helps kick off Oak Tree meet. And this upcoming Saturday Belmont Park hosts multiple Grade 1 races that serve as prep races for the Breeders' Cup which is run at the end of the Oak Tree meet.

    And please keep calling.

    Barbaro Updates: 948

    Posted September 25, 2009

    updates are now here.

Update 5627: Eight galloped for Steve this morning at Woodbine. We had a lot of rain last night, so we did not use the training track for training at all (dirt surface), so they all went to the main track. And all trained nicely for a very straightforward morning's work.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Julie Carey, trainer, Julie Carey is a trainer at Woodbine and trains about a dozen horses. Julie trains Resevoir, who has had a decent campaign including a close fourth in a stake at Saratoga. And recently she took over the training of Cobrador, who was a nice winner here yesterday.

Colin Wicks: jocks agent for Hall of Fame jock Sandy Hawley. Colin Wicks was the jocks agent for Hall of Fame jockey Sandy Hawley and Mickey Walls who won an Eclipse as an apprentice. I met Colin yesterday at the races and he appears to be somewhat of a Woodbine legend. Colin now spends most of his time fishing, and is originally from Durham, and you can tell when you start talking to him.

John O'Donoghue, Neil Drysdale's assistant. John O'Donoghue is Neil Drysdale's assistant, and is not really a Woodbine character, more a Hollywood Park character. But John is here from time to time with Neil's string. I first met John when Neil had a string of horses at Fair Hill one summer, many years ago. I galloped for him then, and our paths have crossed from time to time since then. John and I also worked for the same person in the UK, although not at the same time: Mercy Rimell.

Update 5626: Yesterday was a relatively quiet Saturday for major races here in North America. Indian Blessing did hold on to win the Gallant Bloom, over Sara Louise: Indian Blessing Holds On To Win Gallant Bloom. And the Selene, at Woodbine, was won by Aurora Lights. The more accomplished Milwaukee Brew and Hooh Why filling the second and third spots: Selene Stakes: Aurora Lights Steals the Show.

Update 5625: A fun afternoon at the races at Woodbine. We had three runners, a second and a third. And Hooh Why was third in the Selene. More on that later.

Sue McMullen provided an update from Europe and Ascot's Breeders' Cup "win and your in" races:

This side of the Pond and just four horses lined up for this year's renewal of the Group One Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, with the Aidan O'Brien-trained Rip Van Winkle following in the steps of some equine luminaries and in doing so has also booked his flight to Santa Anita. His win automatically guarantees him a place in the BC Mile but he is set to line up in the BC Classic.

The QEII was one of three races at Ascot today that form part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge, an international series of 63 races whose winners earn qualifying positions into a corresponding race at the World Championships, following the payment of applicable entry fees on October 26.

Hibaayeb, winner of today's Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile, now has an automatic place in the Juvenile Fillies' Turf, while today's Group Two Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes winner Joshua Tree, also trained by Aidan O'Brien, qualifies for the BC Juvenile Turf.

There are 11 Challenge races held in Europe this year, with three still to take place after today - the Group Three Diamond Stakes at Dundalk on October 2 (winner earns a place in the Breeders' Cup Marathon), the Group One Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp on October 4 (winner receives a place in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint) and the Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket on October 17, for which the victor is guaranteed a place in the BC Turf.

Rip Van Winkle, winner of the Group One Sussex Stakes on his previous start, battled impressively under Johnny Murtagh to beat Zacinto by a length and a quarter in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Aidan O'Brien was typically bullish about this particular Ballydoyle star in his post race interview, which was doubtless tinged with relief that the increasingly peerless Sea The Stars was not around to show off his beautiful tail to those trailing behind him. "Rip Van Winkle is not just a good horse, he's a great horse. He's brave, he stays and his biggest asset is his class and early speed. We didn't run a pacemaker today because he would have had to have been a Group One sprinter to have led them and we don't have a horse fast enough to do that so it was brilliant that it worked out today with Aqlaam going on. Johnny rode a masterful race on him.

"We'll really look forward to the Breeders' Cup Classic with him because he's a horse that cruises and stays. His preparation was interrupted coming into this (he suffers from bad feet) and hopefully we'll get a smooth run through to the Classic.

"Mastercraftsman could also go for the Classic, that will be the owners' decision, and he may run on Friday at Dundalk in the Group Three Diamond Stakes (part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge). We may also take Septimus out to America and the two-year-old Viscount Nelson, but again it will be the lads' decision."

Jockey Johnny Murtagh added: "I think the Breeders' Cup Classic will be the ideal race for Rip Van Winkle. He'll love the track at Santa Anita, the distance is right and he has the tactical speed to go round there."

Meanwhile trainer Clive Brittain will discuss with Habaayib's Dubai-based owner Mohammed Al Nabouda about sending the Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile heroine to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf.

The Singspiel filly was breaking her maiden in today's Group One contest, having finished a close second in Doncaster's Group Two May Hill Stakes on her previous start.

"I'll talk to the owners and if they want to take her to America I'll see how the filly is, she'll tell us whether she wants to go," said Brittain. "She's gone from one step to the next and never stopped improving. Whatever she does this year, I think the Oaks could be on the cards for her next season.

"We got mugged on the line on her first start in a maiden at Folkestone and I knew she'd improved again but we got caught on the line once again at Doncaster, at least it worked out today."

Earlier, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Joshua Tree earned a starting position in the BC Juvenile Turf when winning the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes.

The Montjeu colt had won a maiden at Gowran Park on his debut and today held off Waseet to score by a length an a quarter.

Asked about the possibility of Joshua Tree going to Santa Anita, O'Brien said: "All the races like that are under consideration and come into the equation but we won't be in a hurry with him. He's a lovely-moving horse and appreciated the decent ground and pace today."

Update 5624: Off to the races at Woodbine!

Update 5623: And it was a busy morning this morning at Woodbine. All mine went nicely, but I am tired after riding nine. It has been a busy week for galloping horses for sure! And we have a few runners this afternoon, so lets hope for a little luck, and also Hooh Why is running, so I will also be rooting for her.

Here are the details of the major races running this weekend, although it is a quiet weekend ahead of the beginning of a bunch of Breeders' Cup prep races next weekend: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies - REMEMBERING JIM MCKAY.

And here is some feedback on the videos I posted below: Alex @ Woodbine & ABR youtube videos.

Update 5622: We lost two more racing stars, Cryptoclearance and Kona Gold. I am doing this morning update from the barn at Woodbine. I have nine to gallop for Steve, so we shall be busy!

Update 5621: Woodbine produced a feature on Alex Brown Racing which ran, for the first time, on The Score on Wednesday, September 16. Here it is, now on YouTube:

Alex Brown Racing featured on The Score - Part 1of 2

Alex Brown Racing featured on The Score - Part 2 of 2

I was thrilled. I hope you enjoy them, rate them, comment, and forward them to others.

Update 5620: Eight for Steve this morning at Woodbine. And all eight went nicely under decent, if not a little fall-ish, weather. I also got on Hooh Why who is getting ready for her race tomorrow, the Grade 3 Selene.

And Jennifer covers the implications of the Selene, as well as tonight's LongRun gala, in today's thoroughblog: HORSE LOVERS.

Update 5619: Zenyatta, who has had a conservative campaign to date, is scheduled to race two more times this year, and could possibly race early next year before retiring to the breeding shed: Zenyatta could run again after Cup. Found on Paulick Report.

    And please keep calling.

    Posted September 24, 2009

    updates are now here.

Update 5618: Three wins at Woodbine this afternoon made it our best day at the meet. And our jock Luis also rode a winner for Neil Drysdale. He went a perfect four for four!

Update 5617: Eight galloped for Steve this morning at Woodbine. And a bit more eventful than usual as I fell off one of them going back to the gate. Fortunately I landed on my feet and still had a hold of my horse, so no harm done. It has been a while since I have fallen off! The other seven all went nicely, although coming home on one of them a loose horse came barreling through the tunnel just as I was exiting the tunnel. It set my horse off and if there was a horse for me to fall off, it should have been that one. But we stuck together.

After I was finished I got on Hooh Why and we went to the gate for a little schooling. And she schooled nicely.

Update 5616: Hooh Why is back in the entries, running in the Selene Stakes on Saturday. There was strong speculation that Alabama winner Careless Jewel would also go into the Selene, but it appears she will wait another week and go to Philadelphia Park for the richer Fitz Dixon Cotillion: Milwaukee Appeal in Comfort Zone in Selene.

    And please keep calling.

    updates are now here.

Update 5615: Lava Man returns to training: Lava Man back in training.

Update 5614: Today's radio show archived: Alex Brown Racing on the radio! Bob Hatfield joined me as co-host. Andy Durnin (based in California) and Bob Chapman (Godolphin) joined us. Some good conversations. As with other shows, not without a glitch or two, but hopefully interesting horse racing discussions. We covered the races from Woodbine last weekend. Regal Ransom's win in the Super Derby and much more.

Update 5613: A busy morning this morning for me at Woodbine, and it was a muggy morning too. I had ten to gallop for Steve. Four of these also went to the gate for some schooling. All went nicely. I also galloped Hooh Why, who also went nicely. All in all a busy morning, but a decent morning's work and now to get ready for our radio show!

Update 5612: It's Wednesday, so at 11:30 am we will host our ABR radio show. 30 minutes covering horse racing news and other related topics. This week's show will cover the racing from Woodbine last weekend (Marsh Side's disqualification, Ventura's brilliance), 2yo champ Midshipman's winning return to the races, Regal Ransom's easy win in the Super Derby, and more: Alex Brown Racing on the radio.

    Barbaro Updates: 945

    Posted September 22, 2009

    updates are now here.

Update 5611: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

Ventura added her success in the Woodbine Mile to the ongoing Season of Female Domination; second in this race last year, she blew past the field to win easily this time around. Although it's a Win and You're In Race for the Breeders' Cup Mile, she'll be heading to the Filly & Mare Sprint to defend her title. While Ventura is very tough at a mile, it makes sense for her to go to her preferred sprinting distance - since Goldikova looks nearly unbeatable in the Mile.

Goldikova's trainer, Freddie Head, has opted to send the 4-year-old to the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp for her final Breeders' Cup prep - and he also suggested that she might remain in training next year, which is an exciting prospect. Should Goldikova repeat her Mile win, she will be the second mare partnered by Head to such a result; he was the jockey aboard the great Miesque for both of her Breeders' Cup Mile wins - and he thinks that Goldikova is better (and certainly easier to ride). Now in possession of six G1 wins and a gilded list of defeated foes, it's not surprising that she may be scaring off some competition.

Other European horses with possible Breeders' Cup plans include Ballydoyle's Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman, both of whom are under consideration for the Classic (although they tend to excel at the mile distance - but see Goldikova, above). Sea the Stars is still looking unlikely, but is a theoretical possibility for the race.

Recently unlucky (to put it nicely) filly Dar Re Mi may head to the Filly & Mare Turf, and Godolphin recently purchased Delegator (last seen beating older horses after previously finishing in the wake of Sea the Stars) with a view toward the Mile (although I don't love his chances against Goldikova). Obviously there will be a slew of European horses coming for the Turf - but you knew that already.

Although she is not being pointed toward this year's Breeders' Cup, it's not a bad bet to keep an eye on Deluxe - the 2-year-old filly won her debut race in France, and if she follows in her sisters' hoofprints, we can expect to see this latest daughter of Hasili in the Breeders' Cup at some point in the next few years. Banks Hill won the Filly & Mare Turf at 3 and was second at 4, while Intercontinental won the race at 5. (Champs Elysees, another Hasili foal, had bad racing luck over the weekend in the Northern Dancer - he ended up being placed third after an inquiry).

Back in the States, the appallingly-named D'Funnybone stamped himself as a favorite for the Juvenile in the Futurity, while Regal Ransom put himself back in play for the Classic with his Super Derby win. With only a few more major races to go before we get to serious Breeders' Cup countdown time, divisions are beginning to tighten up - here's where things get interesting...

Update 5610: A muggy morning this morning at Woodbine. The changing weather is never good for horses who have a much harder time adapting than we do. I had eight to gallop for Steve. All galloped nicely. I then went to get on Hooh Why, who had a nice work the other day and seems to have come out of her work well. All in all a pretty straightforward morning's work.

Update 5609: This week's ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Tweet this: UD, Sea His Arse, Summer Bird, Keeneland Sales, ABR Radio, Glenye Cain, The Score, Street Sign, Top Bunk List, Mustangs on the Hill, Dysfunctional Anti-Slaughter movement, Jambalaya, Midshipman, Jungle Tale, Marsh Side, Regal Ransom, Princess Haya, Forever Together, Marsh Side, Just as Well, Ventura, Internet for First Time Starters.

    updates are now here.

Update 5608: Steve Haskin takes his weekly look forward to the Breeders' Cup: Countdown to the Cup: More Fantastic Fillies.

Update 5607: Seven galloped this morning for Steve at Woodbine. And all galloped nicely. It was a little warmer this morning too. I also did a little "hotwalking" as we were a little short on help this morning. Good exercise!

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

David Munoz, groom for Steve Asmussen. David Munoz is a groom for Steve Asmussen which means we work together. And David looks after some of my favorite horses, including Salty. David has worked for us for both meets we have been at Woodbine, a very cool guy.

Andy Sykes, exercise rider for Sid Attard. Andy Sykes is a freelance exercise rider who rides mostly for trainer Sid Attard. Originally from England, Andy is one of a couple of Leeds fans here at Woodbine.

Update 5606: A fun afternoon at the races yesterday. Michael Matz's Princess Haya won the Canadian, upsetting the 1-5 favorite Forever Together: Princess Haya Tallies Royal Upset in Canadian. Second-best Just as Well was given the Northern Dancer, on the disqualification of Marsh Side: Northern Dancer Inquiry Goes to Just as Well. And Ventura became the first filly to win the Woodbine Mile with a lightening turn of speed: Lady's First: Ventura Wins the Woodbine Mile.

    And please keep calling.

    Barbaro Updates: 943

    Posted September 18, 2009

    updates are here.

Update 5605: Back to the races this afternoon at Woodbine. We have three runners, one each in the first three races. This is a marquee day for Woodbine with the Canadian (G2), Norther Dancer (G1) and Woodbine Mile (G1). I will be tweeting from the races.

Update 5604: Another chilly start to the day, but it is becoming gorgeous now for the races this afternoon. I had seven to gallop for Steve. A few went to the training track, which is becoming usual. First to the training track there was a brilliant star in the sky, dead central to the direction I was going (east I guess). My next to the training track, the sun was just emerging over the horizon. It made things very difficult to see, but beautiful nonetheless. My third horse to the training track, and the sun was rising.

All mine galloped nicely. While I was on my last horse I got to watch Careless Jewel, the Alabama winner, work. And you can tell we have big races here today with the horsemen who were also out and about this morning. Neil Drysdale is here. Drysdale has Marsh Side in the Northern Dancer. Jonathon Sheppard is here. Sheppard has Forever Together in the Canadian.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Elissa Blowe, Woodbine host. Elissa Blowe, is a Woodbine host, a consequently does a lot of TV work with Jeff Bratt to cover Woodbine. Elissa also covers a lot of Fort Erie racing and runs Phase2Thoroughbreds, helping to find second careers for horses that run at Fort Erie.

Update 5603: A fun afternoon at the races at Woodbine. We did not have a winner, but we were second in the Natalma Stakes with Jungle Tale. It was also good to see Regal Ransom return to the winners' circle in the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.

Update 5602: A chilly start to a perfect morning at Woodbine for training horses. I had eight to gallop for Steve, and all galloped nicely. There was one loose horse on the training track, who seemed to gallop around on her own for about 3 miles. The outrider could not stop her because she did not have a bridle on! We have three runners this afternoon, so lets hope for a little luck. Some good racing from Woodbine today!

Update 5601: Yesterday we saw the impressive return of 2yo champ Midshipman: Midshipman Impressive in Return. 2007 Arlington Million winner Jambalaya also returned to the races after a 2 year absense, and won.

Here are the major stakes for this weekend, with Woodbine being well represented: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies.

Update 5600: A fun afternoon at the races at Woodbine, although we were not among the winners today. It was nice to see Jambalaya, the 2007 Arlington Million winner, win his first race back after a more than 2 year layoff! I also spied a winner for Tim Woolley as Miss MVP won at Monmouth.

And I took some pictures for our Woodbine Characters series:

Brian Lynch, trainer. Brian Lynch is one of the leading trainers here at Woodbine, a high-percentage trainer. Brian also helps with Bobby Frankel's runners when they are stabled at Woodbine. Brian is originally from Australia. 2008 was Brian's best year to date, he conditioned Ginger Brew to a Woodbine Oaks win and Champion 3yo filly.

Mark Solomon, exercise rider for Alison Crook. Mark Solomon is an exercise rider for Alison Crook. A good guy, I got to know Mark quite well last year. Mark works in Dubai in the winters and is originally from India, where he used to be a jockey. Mark has also worked in Ireland!

Jono Jones, jockey. Jono Jones is one of the senior jockeys here at Woodbine. And not a bad days work today with a win on Jambalaya! In 2008 Jono won more Stakes races than any other jockey at Woodbine. Always in good form, Jono is from Barbados, although when I first met Jono I thought he was from Wales!

Update 5599: Eight galloped for Steve this morning at Woodbine. Two of which also went to the gate for some schooling. All went nicely under great weather for training. I also got on Hooh Why who had a nice easy gallop around the main track. After I finished I caught up with Joy and Jilly briefly, from Fair Hill, on my way to the racing office to pick up programs. Always great to see people when they come up from Fair Hill!

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Dan Loiselle, track announcer. Dan Loiselle is the track announcer for thoroughbred racing here at Woodbine. Essentially the voice of Woodbine. Dan has been calling races since 1986, and seems to be very good at what he does. I caught up with Dan yesterday at the races. Someone else was calling the first couple of races and it seemed like we were not at Woodbine. I discovered Dan was at the Woodbine Mile draw, and was on his way up to call the remainder of the races. You just get used to things. And we are used to Dan Loiselle calling races here.

Update 5598: Two horses of interest return to the races this afternoon after long lay-offs. Midshipman, who was the 2yo Champion last year, makes his 3yo debut at Belmont Park today: Midshipman Returns to Action at Belmont. And the winner of the 2007 Arlington Million makes his next start, this afternoon at Woodbine: Jambalaya returns at Woodbine.

    updates are now here.

Update 5597: Woodbine hosts the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile this Sunday, along with other terrific races: Rahy's Attorney Defends Woodbine Mile Crown.

Update 5596: A chilly start this morning, but it does look like it is shaping up to be another nice day. I had eight horses to gallop for Steve. And all galloped nicely. Three also went to the gate for some schooling, and schooled nicely. I also got on Hooh Why, who was pretty sharp in her gallop this morning.

Last night, on The Score's horse racing coverage from Woodbine, they did a wonderful feature on the work we are doing. I will try to get a copy on to YouTube. This morning many of the horsemen on the backside; grooms, hotwalkers, exercise riders, trainers and so forth, commented very favourably on the piece. It was a real testament to the notion that horsemen do really care about the horses with which we work. I was pretty pumped.

And for a bit of fun, spot the error!

Update 5595: The feature 3yo race this Saturday is the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs, which features West Virginia Derby winner Soul Warrior, and UAE Derby winner Regal Ransom: Soul Warrior, Regal Ransom Duel in Super 'D'.

Hoosier Park, in Indiana, has quarantined 59 horses due to a suspected case of Strangles, 2 horses have positive tests: Churchill bars Hoosier horses due to suspected disease.

Update 5594: This week's contribution to Eclipse Magazine (UK): Alex Brown 15 September 2009.

Update 5593: Here is this week's radio show, archived. Glenye Cain was our guest, and Glenye gave us a great overview of what is going on at the Keeneland Sales and the broader implications, for horse racing, of this market slump. Very cool: Alex Brown Racing on the Radio.

Update 5592: Very cool interview with my boss, Steve Asmussen, from his visit to Woodbine last week: Interview: A Chance Encounter With Steve Asmussen.

Update 5591: Nine galloped for Steve this morning at Woodbine, so a bit of a busier morning. And the early morning weather was a little chillier, lots of people wearing jackets. But it now looks like it is going to be another gorgeous day. All mine galloped nicely. Three also went to the gate for a little schooling, and schooled well. After I was done I went to get on Hooh Why. We also took her to the gate for some schooling, and she stood nicely. All in all a busy but good morning's work.

And now to get ready for our ABR radio show!

Update 5590: It's Wednesday, so at 11:30 am we will be hosting our ABR blogtalkradio show. This week Glenye Cain will join us from Keeneland to talk about the state of the sales after the first two days. Glenye is the author of Home Run Horse and an auction and breeding correspondent for the Daily Racing Form. Bob, Paul and I will also cover other racig news: Alex Brown Racing on the radio.

Update 5589: Paulick Report on Keeneland's second day: LIVE BLOGGING THE 2009 KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE: DAY TWO.

Update 5588: Sue McMullen with European news:

Confirmation today that the BC Classic remains a possibility for Europe's superstar Sea The Stars or, as he is now known somewhat graphically at Ballydoyle 'Sea His Arse' following the Cape Cross' colt continued dominance over the Ballydoyle armoury.

Maestro John Oxx today confirmed that the brilliant five-time Group One winner (2,000 Guineas, Derby, Eclipse, Juddmonte International and the Irish Champion Stakes) will most likely head to Santa Anita if the ground at Longchamp rules him out of a tilt at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

"If we miss the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe", said Oxx, "then we will obviously have to look at the two races that are left for him - the Champion Stakes at Newmarket or Santa Anita, where it would probably be the Breeders' Cup Classic rather than the Breeders' Cup Turf.

"The horse tells you what you are going to do, he has to be in good form and give us the right signals. It's very late in the year for a horse that has had a run in the 2000 Guineas but if he missed the Arc, then we would have to consider going to America.

"There hasn't been any final decision but it's highly unlikely that he will be in training next season. We haven't actually got as far as discussing it and we are just taking one race at a time. We are enjoying it while it is going on and that will be a decision for another day, probably in a month's time.

"The ratings are there in black and white and his performances are there for all to see. You would have to say that he is by far the best horse in training. Aidan (O'Brien) has some very, very good horses this year, probably among the best he has ever had with the likes of Fame And Glory and Rip Van Winkle, but Sea The Stars has been able to deal with them with some degree of comfort.

"Under performance would get him beat or bad luck in running or some strange thing happening but, if everything went according to plan and he stays in shape, he's obviously going to be very, very hard to beat."

Although he looks unlikely to line up, Sea The Stars guaranteed himself a place in the $3 million Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf with his victory in the Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes.

The Leopardstown contest is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge - an international series of 63 races whose winners earn qualifying positions into a corresponding race at the World Championships, following the payment of applicable entry fees on October 26.

There are 11 Challenge races held in Europe this year, with the next events taking place at Ascot on September 26. The three Ascot contests are the Group Two Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (winner receives a place in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf), the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile (winner receives a place in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf) and the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, one of Europe's premier all-aged mile contests, for which the victor will be guaranteed a place in the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile.

Meanwhile trainer Freddie Head revealed today that last season's TVG Breeders' Cup Mile winner Goldikova, one of the best fillies to race in Europe in recent years, is on course for the $2 million contest again this year (at Santa Anita on November 7) and will have her prep run over seven furlongs in the Group One Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Saturday, October 3.

The four-year-old put in an outstanding performance to beat subsequent Group One winner Aqlaam by six lengths in the Group One Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques Le Marois at Deauville on August 16, her sixth success in Group or Grade One company.

Goldikova holds entries in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on September 26 and the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday, October 3, but Head has decided to keep the filly at home for her next start.

"Goldikova will be running in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp and then, providing she runs well, she will be heading to Santa Anita," said Head.

"She is very well at the moment and I am very pleased with her. We decided that the best way to target her at the Breeders' Cup would be to run her at Longchamp rather than going to Newmarket or Ascot.

"She could still return to Britain next season if all goes well on her next two starts."

Update 5587: University of Delaware have written a very cool profile of me: Alex Brown, BE '92 MBA.

Update 5586 - Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

As much as I like to complain that the racing industry often Gets It Wrong, the Breeders' Cup did two Very Good Things this week (and it's only Tuesday). First, they announced that a race will be airing live between two college football games on October 10th - and while I don't personally see the point of college football (or, really, any football that largely involves the hands), this is a very smart marketing move. Depending on how things shake out, we should have a chance to see either Zenyatta or Mine That Bird in a Breeders' Cup prep.

There will be a good schedule of racing shown October 10th on ESPN in any event (the Goodwood, the Lady's Secret, the Oak Tree Mile, the Shadwell Turf Mile and the Dixiana Breeders' Futurity), but getting at least one of those races out to a new audience is a welcome gesture. It's a shame it couldn't have been the Woodward, but it's a step in the right direction.

The second Good Thing is the launch of Breeders' Cup 360 - it may be aimed primarily at bettors, but it's full of plenty of great content and it's powered by our favorite racing engine, Raceday 360. There's plenty of opportunity for commentary and discussion and it's got a fantabulous layout and design - full marks for everyone involved!

The flip side to all the good news was the very strange outcome of the Prix Vermeille over the weekend, in which the winning filly, Dar Re Mi, was disqualified to fifth - leaving the pre-race favorite Stacelita undefeated. The reasoning was that she interfered with the fifth-place horse, but I would challenge anyone to find anything amiss with the ride - it's certainly not one of those 50/50 calls. Both fillies will likely still point to the Arc - but as impressive as Stacelita has been so far this season, in my mind, she's certainly not undefeated anymore. And if the ground comes up soft in Paris on October 4th, Stacelita, a fan of the wet stuff, may well be the victor - for Sea the Stars won't run if it's damp. In that case, we'd be more likely to see him in the Breeders' Cup in November - but in any event, the race for the Arc has gotten very interesting indeed.

Update 5585: Yet another gorgeous morning this morning for training horses at Woodbine. I had six to gallop for Steve, and all galloped nicely. I also went to the track to watch Salty work, he looked in good form under his jockey, Luis Contreras. Once I was finished I went over to get on Hooh Why, who also went nicely. A very straightforward morning's work.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

David Clark, jockey. David Clark is one of the senior jockeys in the jocks room at Woodbine, just count the wrinkles! David is originally from England (I did not know that), he has won multiple Queen's Plates, has won a Soveriegn Award and more than 1,400 races at Woodbine. David's main clients include Josie Carroll, Bob Tiller.

I also galloped Hooh Why after I was finished, and she was quite keen this morning. All in all a decent morning's work. And Tizzy seemed in quite good form after his win yesterday!

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Frank Todd jr, exercise rider for Brian Lynch. Frank Todd is an exercise rider for Brian Lynch and used to be a jockey. As an exercise rider Frank also works a lot of horses, unlike myself who no longer works any horses!

Update 5574: Another gorgeous morning for training horses at Woodbine. I had eight to gallop for Steve. One also went to the gate for some gate schooling. All galloped nicely. I then went to get on Hooh Why, who also went nicely.

Three also went to the gate for a little schooling, and stood in the gate very well. All in all a very straightforward morning's work. One was a little tough to gallop, as he has been and we are now trying a few things to settle him down a little more. I also galloped Hooh Why for her owner. She seems to be doing well after her last race.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

    updates are now here.

Update 5563: Recently retired stallion Gone West has been euthanized due to complications from colic: Major Sire Gone West Euthanized.

Update 5562: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

Almost all of last weekend's stories played out exactly as scripted - Sea the Stars continued his march to greatness in Ireland, while we here in the US continued to enjoy Rachel Alexandra's assault on the history books. Even Pyro made an exciting comeback, while only unlucky Einstein just missed out on getting the win he very much deserved.

Sea the Stars took the Irish Champion Stakes in highly impressive style (which is to say, his usual style) and Timeform have, somewhat controversially, awarded him a rating of 140 - which would rank him with all-time greats like Mill Reef and Shergar. It seems churlish to nitpick, but it's worth pointing out that he's been largely beating the same group of horses and that his campaign has been planned to avoid soft ground - but he should face some strong competition in the Arc. The Breeders' Cup is looking very unlikely, as is any talk of a campaign next year - but I do wonder whether he could beat Goldikova at the mile. It's a shame we will likely never find out - it would be wonderful to see him at 4.

Of course, there are accolades aplenty for Rachel Alexandra's historic victory in the Woodward; owner Jess Jackson is likely to give her the rest of the year off (and she has certainly earned that). Her eight starts (and, of course, eight wins) this year have each been spectacular in their own way - and having Horse of the Year wrapped up in September is fine by me. In case you're curious, Sea the Stars has only five starts this year - and eight starts lifetime; on this side of the pond, Zenyatta has started three times so far this season, and only iron horses Einstein and Macho Again can boast six starts this year. (Awesome Gem has seven starts, but I don't see anyone putting him forward for Horse of the Year). I think we've been more than privileged to follow Rachel Alexandra along through her historic season - let her have her break and come back refreshed next year. Let's also give credit to Macho Again, who ran quite a race for second - he certainly deserved to be there and to be part of history. I stand by my statement that Rachel Alexandra's drive to stay ahead of Macho Again in the closings strides was not unlike the Millennium Falcon being shot out of the exploding Death Star at the end of Return of the Jedi. Only better.

Pyro was certainly looking brighter in the Forego, in which he finally landed a G1 win; it was his second start back after time off, and sprinting clearly suits him. It's nice to see a promising horse finally find his groove.

Richard's Kid was certainly an upset winner in the Pacific Classic, but runner-up Einstein has nothing to be ashamed of - he put in a tough, gritty effort that would have gotten a win nine times out of ten - this time happened to be an outlier. Richard's Kid benefited from an outstanding ride from Mike Smith, but I wonder where we will see him next. Colonel John had a bad trip, but also looked a bit tired - maybe next time. In any event, Einstein seemed quite at home on a Southern California surface - I'd love to see him win a Breeders' Cup race.

Update 5561: Off to the yearling sales at Woodbine.

Linda Rice won the training title at Saratoga: Rice edges Pletcher for Spa's top trainer, excerpt:

Linda Rice held off Todd Pletcher by one winner, 20-19, at Saratoga to become the first female in the modern era to win a trainer's title at a major U.S. racing circuit.

"It means the world to me," said Rice, the 44-year-old daughter of trainer Clyde Rice. "It's been a lot of work, a long time coming, and it's a real honor to compete at the greatest racetrack in the world and to come out with the training title."

    Found on Paulick Report.

Update 5560: I had six to gallop for Steve this morning at Woodbine. One was a little tough, but the rest all galloped nicely. And Steve is here to supervise, and also here for the sales which occur this afternoon.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Scott Fairlie, trainer. Scott Fairlie is one of the leading trainers here at Woodbine. His top horse this year is the filly Milwaukee Appeal, who most recently was second in the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga.

Update 5559: This week's ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Tweet this: Thornbury, Lord of the Game, Genius Jones, Eurico Rosa Da Silva, Alexandrea Tersigni, Chantal Sutherland, Lord of the Game, Siphon City, Mine That Bird, Sea The Stars, Rachel Alexandra, Macho Again, Dragooner, Rachel Alexandra, Richard's Kid, Einstein, Headless Horsemen, Verne's Baby, Gone Astray.

    Posted September 4, 2009

    updates are now here.

Update 5558: Book Review: Headless Horsemen

I have just finished the book, which was sent to me by the publisher. It is written by Jim Squires, a terrific writer who comes from the newspaper business. He bred Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos and runs Two Bucks Farm in Kentucky. Jim also contributes to The Rail, as do I.

The book is a must read for anyone who wants to learn, in more detail, what is wrong with the business of horse racing. And there is a lot wrong at this stage for sure with regard to racing, breeding and selling horses in our industry. I learned a lot, while the book also confirmed some of my own thinking.

I do think the book though is a little tainted by the disdain Mr. Squires clearly has for some of the main protagonists in the horse racing business. And he also places some on a pedestal which may or may not be absolutely appropriate. Some of the conclusions are also drawn from speculation at best. That being said, I did learn a lot, and it was a quick read because the book is written so well.

Update 5557: Another gorgeous morning this morning for training horses at Woodbine. I only had five to gallop for Steve, and all went nicely. One also did a little gate schooling. I also got on Hooh Why, who enjoyed a stroll around the training track. And during a break I went to the track kitchen and ran into a Fair Hill regular, Gordon Kerr. Gordy was here shipping a horse up for trainer Michael Pino.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Vern Dubinsky, owner Careless Jewel. Vern Dubinsky owns the second best 3yo filly in North America, Careless Jewel who trains up here at Woodbine with Josie Carroll. Vern was in the track kitchen this morning.

Update 5556: Media reports of the Pacific Classic at Del Mar:

RICHARD'S KID NIPS EINSTEIN IN PACIFIC CLASSIC
Richard's Kid collars Einstein in Pacific Classic

Update 5555: Wow, Richard's Kid upsets the Pacific Classic. Einstein ran a solid second, just beaten at the wire.

Update 5554: Zensational wins his third Grade 1 race in a row at Del Mar: Zensational Bolts to O'Brien Win; 'Cup Next. And Hot Dixie Chick won the 2yo feature at Saratoga: Hot Dixie Chick Makes Bold Statement.

Next up, the Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

Update 5553: New York Times on Rachel Alexandra: The World's Best Athlete Is a Filly.

Update 5552: Another gorgeous morning this morning for training at Woodbine. I had seven to gallop, and all galloped nicely.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Dean Deverell, jockey. Dean Deverell is a journeyman jockey here at Woodbine. Dean also rides at Fort Erie, and was riding at Ajax (quarter horses) until recently. Sunday is always a tough day for Dean, all three race tracks run. Aside from Sunday, jockeys can ride at both Fort Erie and Woodbine as they race on different days. Ajax races both Saturday and Sunday, so most of the quarter horse jockeys are not able to ride elsewhere. Dean seems to be a good guy.

    Update 5551: From NYRA:

RACHEL RULES AT SARATOGA RACE COURSE

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Standing outside his barn at Saratoga Race Course on a sparkling Sunday morning, trainer Steve Asmussen was still basking in the glow of Rachel Alexandra's historic victory in the 56th running of the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes as he reported the filly came out of the race in good shape.

"I'm just extremely proud of her and proud of everybody, and happy for [owners] Barbara [Banke] and Jess [Jackson]," said Asmussen. "He steps up and puts it out there. People like to talk about what could have happened -- he sees what will happen."

On Saturday afternoon, before an enthusiastic crowd of 31,171, Rachel became the first filly to ever win the Woodward. The 3-year-old filly, who has now defeated older horses as well as her male peers in fashioning a nine-race winning streak, will remain in Saratoga for the time being as her connections ponder her schedule for the rest of the year.

Both Rachel Alexandra and the undefeated West Coast mare Zenyatta have been invited to the Grade 1 Beldame October 3 at Belmont Park, the purse for which would be raised to $1 million with an additional $400,000 commitment from TVG-Betfair if both start.

"I honestly don't know [what her next race will be]," said Asmussen. "I heard Jess say [she might not run again this year] yesterday at the press conference. We'll just worry about her health, and take her back to the track on Wednesday."

Asmussen said that Rachel Alexandra, whose blanket of pink carnations adorned the rail outside her stall, was tired from her efforts in the Woodward, in which she set fast early fractions and then turned back the furious late charge from Macho Again.

"She ran," said Asmussen. "She's very physical. She ran hard, cooled out, drank plenty of water ... she's a professional. She doesn't rest on her laurels. She puts in the work. That's what gives you so much confidence about her. She doesn't just take the day off."

In addition to becoming the only female to win the Woodward, and the first 3-year-old to do so since Holy Bull in 1994, Rachel Alexandra also joins an elite roster of champions who have won the race, including Curlin, Forego, Kelso, Sword Dancer, Damascus, Buckpasser, Key to the Mint, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, Slew o’Gold, Alysheba, Easy Goer, and Cigar.

Asmussen and Jackson became the first trainer and owner to win consecutive editions of the Woodward with different horses, having taken last year's running with two-time Horse of the Year Curlin.

Rachel, who is 8-0 this year, won the Kentucky Oaks by 201/4 lengths and the Mother Goose at Belmont Park by 191/4 lengths and beat 3-year-old colts in the Preakness and Haskell.

Jackson has said he will not run Rachel Alexandra in the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita because of the synthetic racing surface and added he planned on running her again next year as a 4-year-old.

"She's run more races than Zenyatta's run, and Zenyatta's a 5-year-old," Jackson said during Saturday's post-race news conference. "You can't expect a youngster -- she's only 3 and she just ran against older horses -- to keep going all the time. You have to give them a break, and we'll talk that over very seriously."

Update 5550: Media reports of Rachel Alexandra's terrific win:

MACHO WOMAN! RACHEL TAKES THE WOODWARD
    Rachel Alexandra amazes in Woodward
Rachel Holds Off Macho Again in Woodward
    Rachel notches Woodward

Update 5549: Rachel Alexandra the great! And she needed to be after a ride from Calvin Borel which, in my opinion, was far from his best. She won the Woodward the hard way, going gate-to-wire and holding off a late charging Macho Again. Here is the video on our YouTube Group: RACHEL ALEXANDRA - 2009 Woodward Stakes .

Update 5548: Sea The Stars, who is currently considered the best horse in the world, won again today in the Irish Champion Stakes. This was the 3yos 5th consecutive Group 1 win: STARS PROVES CHAMPION AGAIN.

Update 5547: Another thoroughly gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine for training horses. I had seven to gallop for Steve and all galloped nicely, one did get a little tough! Afterwards I went over to get on Hooh Why. She seems to have come out of her race well and is enjoying training. And here she is afterwards, having a bath.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Paul Hulburd, assistant trainer for Mac Benson. Paul Hulburd is assistant trainer for Mac Benson. Paul is originally from Hereford (UK) and came to Canada about 25 years ago. Paul has been working at Woodbine for about 3 years. Good guy, very laid back. A Hereford fan, I did not know they had a football team!

Update 5546: So today Rachel Alexandra will attempt to make history: Woodward Analysis: Will Rachel Make History?

You can listen to our assessment of this race, as well as the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, on this week's radio show: Alex Brown Racing on the radio.

And here's how to watch: WEEKEND STAKES: WHERE TO WATCH brought to you by KBC Horse Supplies.

And while Rachel Alexandra runs at Saratoga today, current world leader Sea The Stars is scheduled to run in Ireland: STARS IS 'LIKELY' CHAMPION RUNNER .

Update 5545: Jockeys are supporting injured jockey Michael Straight tomorrow: Jockeys launch national effort to help Straight on Saturday. Found on Equidaily.

Update 5544: Another gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine. I had six to gallop for Steve. Three of which also went to the gate for some gate schooling. All went nicely, although Salty got a little keen when he was almost pushed down to the inside rail by a worker about to break off. As I was coming back from the track on Salty, trainer Josie Carroll remarked on what a good looking horse he is. And what a lovely head he has. He is my favorite so I could not disagree!

I also got on Hooh Why, who also went well. As I was on my way to Hooh Why's barn I ran into John O'Donoghue, assistant trainer for Niel Drysdale. I galloped for John many years ago when he had a string of horses for Niel at Fair Hill. They now have six horses here at Woodbine. Always good to run into familiar people!

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Paul Bhupaul, Groom for David Cotey. Paul Bhupaul is a groom for David Cotey, and someone I have known since I first arrived at Woodbine in April of last year. Good guy, we are always talking about the big races, who's winning, who's running and so forth.

Update 5543: The popular Einstein, who will be running in this weekend's Pacific Classic at Del Mar (Col. John, Einstein Clash in Pacific Classic), has been purchased by Stronach to join his breeding program: Stronach Stables Buys Einstein.

    And please keep calling.

    updates are now here.

Update 5542: More press on recent retirements of stars: Moss helps claim, retire two Cornhusker winners.

Update 5541: Colonel John is the morning line favorite in Sunday's Pacific Classic at Del Mar: Colonel John Favored for Pacific Classic.

A cool article on Dominic Terry, Rachel Alexandra's exercise rider: Rachel's morning chauffeur.

Update 5540: Another stunning morning this morning for training horses at Woodbine. I had nine to gallop for Steve, and all galloped nicely. Four also went to the gate for some schooling. I also got on Hooh Why, who also went well. And when I visited the track kitchen to grab a coffee I noticed Stumpy hanging out on the grassy area in front of the kitcken.

Last night, at the races, I met Alexandrea Tersigni and her father. I think Alexandrea must be Eurico Rosa Da Silva's biggest fan. I have witnessed on a number of occasions Alexandrea congratulating Eurico when he does well. And Eurico takes it all in his stride as they engage in animated conversations. Just very cool to see someone so excited about the sport, and an ambassador to the sport seem so genuinely happy about the attention.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Kenny Romine, groom for Steve Asmussen. Kenny Romine is a groom for Steve Asmussen which means we work together. This is Kenny's first year working in our barn and it is a pleasure to work with him. Grooms are like riders in the sense that good riders love horses, good grooms love horses. Kenny loves his horses. Kenny has been working at Woodbine since 1991.

Update 5539: Steve Haskin on Summer Bird and his trainer Tim Ice: Countdown to the Cup: Bird Bath.

    And please keep calling.

    updates are now here.

Update 5538: Daily Racing Form on Lord of the Game's retirement: Lord of the Game claimed, retired, excerpt:

Moss recently claimed an old class horse named Tour of the Cat at Presque Isle Downs under similar circumstances, simply to take the horse off the track and put him out to pasture.

"I don't make a habit of it, but I do have the ability to claim horses that other people would like to retire," Moss said. "Name horses, famous horses, and horses that aren't so famous. My goal is to keep bringing attention to this and have other breeders and owners step up. You can't save them all, but if one or two people step up, it makes all the difference. WinStar really stepped up to the plate on this horse. I wish more horses were as wanted as him."

Update 5537: Entries for the upcoming Woodward: Rachel to Face 7 Males in Historic Woodward.

Update 5536: This week's radio show included guest Andy Durnin from Del Mar and co-hosts Bob Hatfield from Churchill Downs and Paul Breedon from Saratoga. Lots of discussion about last week's Travers and King's Bishop, and the upcoming Woodward and Pacific Classic: Alex Brown Racing on the Radio.

Update 5535: A thoroughly gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine for training racehorses! I had seven to gallop for Steve, and all galloped nicely. I also took two to the gate for a little schooling, and they both stood nicely. After finishing galloping for Steve I got on Hooh Why, who ran here over the weekend and is scheduled to be here up to her next race. She went out for a little jog and all was well.

Now to get ready for our 11:30 am radio show.

Update 5534: It's Wednesday, which means we have our 30 minute radio show at 11:30 am today. We will review last weekend's racing action, including the Travers and the King's Bishop. We will also preview the upcoming Woodward Stakes (Rachel Alexandra) and the Pacific Classic at Del Mar. It should be a fun show: Alex Brown Racing on the radio!

    And please keep calling.

    updates are now here.

Update 5533: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

We here at Superfecta HQ are always pleased when we pick a winner that some have doubted; with that in mind, it was especially nice to see
Summer Bird win the Travers (and earn a 110 Beyer in the process). He will most likely head to the Jockey Club Gold Cup or the Goodwood next, but the Super Derby in trainer Tim Ice's home state of Louisiana is also an outside possibility.

Hold Me Back proved he's not just a synthetic specialist with a creditable second-place finish, but poor Quality Road didn't get the best of the race. While he was a bit unlucky, he didn't look like a horse who wanted to go that distance - his performance suggested he'd be much more comfortable back somewhere between 7 furlongs and a mile.

For some reason, however, Todd Pletcher still thinks that Quality Road would like
to consider the Jockey Club Gold Cup, but the Goodwood seems a better fit for distance (and a more useful prep for whichever Breeders' Cup race he aims for - I'd vote for the Sprint or Dirt Mile). Mine That Bird, now reunited with Calvin Borel, is also aiming for the Goodwood on his way to the Breeders' Cup.

The sprinters showed they are a worthy division as well - even if it was a little rougher. Capt. Candyman Can is clearly at home in this company in his win-by-DQ in the Kings Bishop, and while I doubted Vineyard Haven's readiness for the race, he certainly performed well - until he started shoving into Capt. Candyman Can, that is. It seemed pretty clear from the head-on replay that Vineyard Haven's number would be taken down (and jockey Alan Garcia ended up with a seven-day suspension), but his connections must still have been pleased with the ability he showed - even if they missed the check for first place. (But with a purchase price of $12 million, it's not as though he's ever going to earn that back at the track). It was pleasing to see Ian Wilkes, formerly the assistant to Carl Nafzger, get his first G1 win, even if it was in slightly peculiar circumstances. The only real disappointment in the race was Munnings - but he's probably due an off day, having most recently tried outrunning Rachel Alexandra in the Haskell (although that didn't seem to bother Summer Bird).

Of course, the focus has shifted squarely onto Rachel Alexandra, with NYRA declaring the events surrounding Saturday's Woodward 'The Rachel Alexandra Show.' For those still keen to complain that the field for the Woodward may not present her much of a challenge (as if the Travers might have), NYRA invested in a bit of historical research (huzzah!) to further highlight how unusual her turn in the Woodward will be. In addition to noting the achievements of Twilight Tear and Busher (both featured at Colin's Ghost previously), the few other 3-year-old fillies to beat older males in the US included greats such as Miss Woodford and Beldame - more recently, European shippers (some of them among my favorite horses ever) like Miesque, Six Perfections and Goldikova have also risen to the challenge - but it's become even more of a rarity on dirt in recent years.

Naturally, we'll have a lot more to say about Rachel Alexandra later this week, so for now we'll close with trainer Steve Asmussen's take on the press following her normal workouts receive:

"All the attention and the crowds is just part of her life," said Asmussen. "She doesn't know everybody else doesn't get treated that way. She probably thinks 25 to 30 people follow everybody when they go over to run. Those kind of things might be unsettling for other horses, but it's kind of the norm for her."
    Indeed.

Update 5532: Weekly ABR Facebook Group e-mail: Tweet this: Boat cruise, Mine That Bird, Superfecta, Summer Bird, Michael Straight, James B. Irvine Library, Peter Brette, Travers, Quality Road, Summer Bird, Vineyard Haven, Jungle Wave, Lord of the Game, Luna Vaga, Hooh Why, Rachel Alexandra, Mine That Bird..

    A day off today!

    And please keep calling.
