    Barbaro Updates: 894

    updates are now here.

Update 5281: Off to the races at Woodbine. Night racing on Wednesdays: SMILE.

Update 5280: Tattoo lookup service expanded: Rescue Groups See Benefits in New TJC Policy, excerpt:

"Now that it is open to everyone and they (the Jockey Club) will also help ID horses with only partial tattoos, but also markings and descriptions, I see rescues across the country using this service," commented Beverly Strauss, executive director of the MidAtlantic Horse Rescue. "It is a great service and one that truly contributes to the safety and welfare of our Thoroughbreds."

And here is the service: Jockey Club Registry.

Update 5279: A busy morning this morning for Steve at Woodbine. I had ten to gallop, five of which went to the gate for some schooling. All galloped nicely and all schooled nicely. And the weather is gorgeous here today.

To continue the Woodbine Characters series, just one today, since I was busy:

Richie Callender, exercise rider for Danny Vella. Richie Callender gallops horses for trainer Danny Vella. Richie used to be a jockey back in Barbados. I met Richie last year, we used to hang out in the same bar, JJ Muggs, just across the street from Woodbine. A cool guy for sure.

Update 5278: The second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown is on Sunday, at Fort Erie. It is shaping up to be a six horse field, with the first three finishers of the Queen's Plate heading down for the Prince of Wales: PRINCELY.

And please keep calling and consider attending Horses on the Hill on July 14.

    Comments

Hiya, FsOB! I have a question for Alex, Judy Scott, Maribel, and all our FsOB in Canada. Has HRH the Prince of Wales ever attended the Prince of Wales Stakes in Canada? Prince Charles seems to enjoy the racing festivities at Royal Ascot each year.

Wishing all a safe & productive Weds. (This is one of those work weeks when I need to remind myself what day it is!). Peace, RMH

    #### To Barb in AZ: Sure wish I could send you, Freckles, and all your critters this wet, rainy weather. At least my blue hydrangea bush is happy!
To Sherry: Any updates on Aaron this week? I hope that rehab is going well for him.
To Sandra: Please know that we're all here for you. ####

###Robyn, thank you for your "shout out" to Arnie & Jake! I'm sure they've found your Huskies & are all chillin' together in hevvin along with the other FOB furbabies! The Bubbas (as we called them) were also brothers. Big old country dogs. They developed degenerative myelopathy & their debilitating symptoms progressed at the same rate. My vet said the odds against that happening were huge. But, the boys were together before they entered our world, together during their time in it & then left it together, side by side, in their bed at home - thanks to my wonderful vet. Without a doubt, the hardest decision I've ever made but, as everyone here knows through experience, one made with the most love & respect. I still get teary when I think of them. But, to me that just means they're still alive in my heart & that little tug confirms they are where I promised them they'd always be - just as each and every FOB has promised their own. I BELIEVE

###Goodness. Quiet this morning. That's a good thing. My day promises to be interesting--I work part-time for the daily paper and our office puts together a pet quarterly.

Our feature story this time is on ... Service Rats. ;o)

As the man who sold me Huey said, "Every horse needs groceries and a job to do." Guess the same applies to all God's creatures ;o)

Anyway, the editor and I (I'm "assistant editor" ;o) are heading to a coffee shop (that allows all service animals to enter) to meet the owner this morning. Apparently all service rats "come in pairs" and she'll have her two there. I'll interview and the editor will take pictures.

All the news that's fit to print and all that.

###Lovely morning--sunny, slight breeze, almost a bit coolish. Not "blob cool," but enough that the ceiling fans do not have to be set on "stun" to move the air around.

###Safe travels to all, keep warm/cool/dry as appropriate, and prayers to those in need.

    And thank you, Alex.

    Morning, ABR Famblee:)

Kay-What pls is a 'service rat'? Are you speaking of a 'real' rat? I'll be checking back for the answer:)

Don't know if anyone has checked back to the late posts from y'day, but our Sherry, AZ left an 'after midnight' message that *CHEIFSTER* is the featured *STAR* at Equine Heaven for today, so yole might wish to see his face there, and read his story, too:) Of course, I think it is WAY COOL, that he and Murph are helping *SLEW* in the kitchen:)

I've got nothing so noteworthy yet on my mind this morning....still enjoying my cup of coffee and working on getting my head screwed on straight. Hope yole will have a 'dine&fandy' day today!

    Hay, FOB's!

I got a real treat yesterday. Robin West and I had lunch with Mike Rea. I had never been introduced to him and I found him to be delightful and inspiring. We went back to his apartment after lunch and I looked through his photograph album of all the horses he owned/trained/rode. An amazing career...I even showed him and Robin some very gentle yoga stretches to help flexibility and to lengthen the muscles.

All in all a very enjoyable afternoon.

Thanks, Mike and Robin for a lovely day. Hope to repeat it soon.

    Good Morning Gang.

I was thinking of Sandra over the past few days, as my Lucky is going through similar issues that Chief went through. Lucky had what I call a 'step down' the other day - just something different with him. Maybe it was a TIA. The next day it was as if nothing had happened. Last night he had a spunk in his step that I hadn't seen for months. We keep going, and we must find comfort that these rescues that come to us out of dismal beginnings, have, and have had, the best time of their lives.

Meanwhile, Monkey is a most proficient mouser. I had 2 in the house that she kept watch over until they discovered the humane traps I set up. The mice were taken for a ride to a lovely spot with hiking trails. And Monkey continues her watch.....

July 8 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Our habits make other people wealthy. As soon as they find out what we are reaching for, they provide it. If it is something good, we share their good fortune. If our habits lean toward the destructive, you can wager those who work to satisfy our appetites will keep working. Habit keeps us traveling the same routes, doing the same things, without thinking.

What would happen if we suddenly decided to change everything? Our habits would fight with us and make that change as hard as possible. Change is necessary in the way we think and in how we react, especially in the emotions that flare up when we try to let go of something destructive in our lives. When trying to get rid of bad habits, don't say, "I tried to do that before and it didn't work." We must not hesitate to defend ourselves against these negative forces. Everything depends on our being determined and persistent.

There was never a question of evil power over and above the power of God.

    Chief Luther Standing Bear
    Lakota

############ sorry to be tardy getting the daily contact lists up today; took longer than usual to come alive this morning (after 5 out of 6 nights coming home in the wee hours) and had to do overdue cat-chores before I could get here.

Wishing I could report new cosponsors today, but I'd be lyin . . . PLS continue to contact the (standing) AAHS list of former cosponsors of HR 6598 AND the daily "short" lists from Daniel of HSUS - "comin' right up."

After all - who here couldn't agree with this expression in today's Cherokee Devotional:

Everything depends on our being determined and persistent.

AMEN . . . (Harriette thinks it's a hoot to see this old atheist chiming AMEN . . . ) - you don't have to believe in a traditional Supreme Being / Higher Power to affirm a truth when you perceive it . . . and signing off with my old moniker just so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle . . .

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

    OUR FEDERAL CAMPAIGN
    -------------
UPDATE Wednesday 7/8 AND REMINDER - re-posting from yesterday and the day before and the day before . . .

No new news on the federal front this morning - holding at 143 cosponsors in the House for HR 503 and 17 cs in the Senate for S 727. We are making significant progress - please keep contacting the target lists (posted above) AND your own unsigned Rep/Sen(s) - cosponsor lists coming right up in my next post.

Thanks Jonna for reminding us that we have until the end of 2010, NOT the end of 2009, to work with these bills. Not that we WANT to wait that long, only that we have that entire extra year to "gitter done" . . . A much better prospect than running out of time at the end of THIS year, as we did last year with HR 6598 . . . Of course we want slaughter to end YESTERDAY - but everything in DC seems to move with the speed of molasses . . . and I am glad to be reminded that we have that add'l year.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em . . .

Marines' beasts of burden are again leading the pack

For centuries, donkeys and mules have been the preferred mode of military transport in Afghanistan. At a training center in the Sierra Nevada, Marines learn how to handle the sure-footed animals.

Good story about Rachel Alexandra in Lexington paper today..

Filly will face top Foes with Horse of the Year on the line

By Gary West - McClatchy Newspapers FORT WORTH, Texas —

She probably won't have patsies on her non-conference schedule, probably won't confine herself to picking the cherries from the low branches. No pie or cake for her, nothing easy.

Rachel Alexandra won't have a campaign that's designed just to protect her position as the top racehorse in the country, said her trainer, Steve Asmussen.

Or, some might say, she won't have a campaign like Zenyatta's, but I'll leave that debate for the moment to suggest simply that, for the remaining months of 2009, Rachel Alexandra will have a campaign that's designed to secure for her a position in history.

"The objectives for her change," Asmussen said. "We want her to be horse of the year, of course, but we don't want to campaign her just to protect her position as potential horse of the year."

With her stunning victory last month in the Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park, Rachel Alexandra drew clear of any rivals and opened up an advantage shimmering with overheated air in the race to be horse of the year. Like most of her races, this is starting to look like a romp.

Yes, the Mother Goose offered no real challenge, only two hapless rivals made to look like turtles. But in winning by more than 19 lengths, she ran the 11⁄8 miles in 1:46.33. Forget the hapless rivals; Rachel Alexandra's clocking was the fastest in the history of the race, a history that includes such winners as Go for Wand, Serena's Song, Lakeway, Sky Beauty and Ruffian. And even though jockey Calvin Borel took Rachel Alexandra firmly in hand through the final sixteenth of a mile, her winning time was just four lengths (four-fifths of a second) slower than Secretariat's track record.

She's performing at a level not seen by a 3-year-old filly since Silverbulletday in 1999. But Rachel Alexandra seems to reach that level each and every time she steps onto the track, and she appears to reach it easily, as if surpassing it would only require a reason or an inclination to do so.

And so what would she have to do from here to become the first 3-year-old filly since Busher in 1945 to become Eclipse Horse of the Year? Well, having already won the Preakness and five other stakes, Rachel Alexandra could probably win the horse of the year by remaining in her division and winning the Coaching Club American Oaks, the Alabama and the Gazelle.

But that's probably what she won't do. Her owner, Jess Jackson, has proved to be aggressive and sporting, keenly aware of the sport's traditions and its fans.

And so, Asmussen said, she will be nominated to virtually every upcoming race of weighty import, including the Whitney, Delaware Handicap, Go for Wand, Coaching Club American Oaks, Haskell Invitational, Alabama and Travers.

The Delaware Handicap offers a million-dollar jackpot and an opportunity to face her elders; it glistens with reward and challenge. And then she could follow with the Alabama, a traditional showcase for the top 3-year-old fillies. But the Haskell, where she would face the boys, also has that alluring combination of challenge and reward. On the other hand, because it's run two weeks after the Delaware race, the Haskell would cramp the Alabama, and the Beldame doesn't come along until October, and, just to back up and think it through it again, trying the Whitney on Aug. 8 — now that would truly be historic, and ... well, the options are many.

She could run against her elders, and she again could take on males. But she probably won't feast on cherries and pastry. That would be too easy for a filly who's probably going to be horse of the year.

West writes for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The BARBARO EFFECT saves horses in many ways . . .

Wanted to call you all's attention to a seldom publicized aspect of The Barbaro Effect - how FOBs post at the DB, ads for free or very cheap horses from places like Craigslist, and then FOBs contact the owners and tell them how their beloved horses could wind up as meat . . . Here is an excerpt from one of those Threads up at the DB now.

Exchange / Free / Rescue Gifts - IL Free Horses

posted by jamielsg 38924.4 in reply to 38924.3

my fellow FOB's and I came up with a standard "warning" letter to post to folks who post their horses on Craigslist.......those that post free horses or really cheaply priced horses....I've added a copy. Please use it if you like and feel free to edit as you wish. Thanks! Jamie

Hello! I am writing in regards to your ________ that you have listed on Craigslist. My name is _________ and I am a member of the group called the Fans of Barbaro. I wanted to give you a heads-up about potential buyers who may look at your horse. Kill-buyers buy horses from auctions and individuals and then sell the animals to slaughterhouses. Many horses from America are sent to Canada and Mexico slaughterhouses. The meat from these horses is sent overseas for human consumption. I wanted to warn you because I'm sure you don't want to see your __________ end up in the wrong hands. There are some steps you can take to prevent your horse from meeting this terrible fate. Kill-buyers often pose as regular family men. It's not unusual for them to show up with a wife and kids and, oftentimes, pulling a trailer. They may tell you that they're looking for a nice horse or pony for their children. I highly recommend that you check any potential buyer for vet, farrier, and feed store references. Kill buyers are masters at lying and they will provide false phone numbers for their vet, farrier, etc., so it is important that you actually call the numbers provided for verification. Please visit the potential home/farm where your horse may be living. Cob's are not generally interested in the history of your horse, such as specific training, so it's not likely they'll ask too many questions. They simply want to make a fast transaction and load your horse/pony onto their trailer. If potential buyers show any hesitation about coming back for another visit or if they have qualms about you doing a site check, please listen to your instincts. This person/persons probably does not have your animal's best interest at heart. Hopefully this email will be of some help to you as you screen possible new owners for your very handsome/pretty ______. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me personally at ____________ or visit our horseracing forum at alexbrownracing.com. We always welcome new members to our ever growing family. Sincerely, _________

    [end crosspost from the DB]

Been meaning to chime in with a THIS IS SUCH A WONDERFUL THING comment for quite a while - once they get one of these letters, they can no longer claim THAT THEY DIDN'T REALIZE . . .

Everyone, pls keep your eyes open for ads like that, not only at Craigslist but also at your local feedstore, tackshop, etc - and get one of those "killer buyer letters" to the owner.

####### MaryDS1 has been posting at this DB Thread General: Horse-related - Sherman's Barn - The Circle of Life - about her newly acquired BFE (Best Friend Equine, I just made that up)

Wanted to share with you what I posted to her there - meant to post my 4th of July story over the weekend but never got around to it - and it just fit in. Mary had posted how bombproof her new horse proved to be with fireworks going on.

    34446.593 in reply to 34446.532

So happy to learn that you and another wonderful horse have found one another! My very best wishes to you both and please know I am simply Kvelling Mit Nachas for you.

Gotta share my own bombproof horse story from a Fourth of July over 30 years ago. I had been debating whether to take the plunge and buy the school horse I'd fallen in love with; we were riding in the outdoor ring across the road from a golf course where ppl were firing firecrackers and the like; and though other horses working in the ring were at least antsy, if not truly spooked, by the commotion, my Sunny was absolutely unfazed by it all. It was then I decided to get him - my first "adult" horse.

But the real story is the aftermath of that - when I told my Dad (RIP) some weeks later that I had bought the horse, and explained why, my Dad replied, "Maybe he's deaf."
