    Barbaro Updates: 890

    updates are now here.

Update 5256: And we have two additions to the Woodbine Characters series:

Gail Cox, trainer. Gail Cox, a trainer at Woodbine, has a relatively small stable but from that small stable won a nice stakes race a couple of days ago. Chantal Sutherland rode the winner. Gail rides a lot of her own horses in the mornings.

Mike Novakovic, Champions Bar bartender. Champions Bar is on the third floor at Woodbine, and if you visit you will meet Mike Novakovic. He is the main bartender and seems to be there all the time. Champions Bar might as well be my local bar so I have gotten to know Mike quite well. Cool guy.

Update 5255: A fun afternoon at the races at Wooodbine, although we did not win a race from our two runners. Both were fourth. We did also paddock school in the second race (Paddock schooling second race at Woodbine). I then went up to the Champions Bar to watch some racing. Mike was bartending as usual (Mike Novakovic, Champions Bar bartender.) After the races I returned to our barn on the backside (Back at the barn at Woodbine.) Wayne Green, who had earlier won the third race with his new filly Victoria Charm, was finishing things up and putting on his fillies leg wraps (Wayne Green doing up his winning filly, Victoria Charm .)

Update 5254: Off to the races at Woodbine, from where I will be "tweeting" and "twitpicing".

Update 5253: A busy morning this morning for Steve at Woodbine. I had ten sets. No break. We just kept going. And a couple of my horses prooved trickier than usual so it was not such a straightforward morning. But I survived. That's not so for everyone as I saw Brian Lynch walking back to the gap, a loose horse had made that same journey ahead of Brian!

After I was done I headed over to the jocks room to catch up with Chantal Sutherland. I was helping her set up her iPhone so she can tweet more often. And this is Chantal's tweet as we tested things out.

And to continue our Woodbine Characters series:

Tyler Pizarro, jockey. Tyler Pizarro is one of Woodbine's younger members of the jockey colony. But Tyler has quickly established himself as a leading rider here at Woodbine. Tyler's services are in demand and he is well liked. A cool guy, Tyler rode a horse for us the other day (we had two in the same race and Luis could not ride both) and she ran a nice third in a stake.

Roger Broomes, David Cotey groom. Roger Broomes is another groom for David Cotey. And someone I have known since I first arrived at Woodbine last year since we share the same barn. All David Cotey's grooms are the same grooms as he had working for him last year. All good guys to help make the barn fun.

Update 5252: Rachel Alexandra, a horse helping humans: Rachel Alexandra Auction to Benefit Charity.

    And please keep calling.

Hiya, FsOB! And what a great thing that Jess Jackson is doing for the V Foundation. Wow, TGIF is quite the understatement today.... This old bird is very tired, folks. Wishing everyone a safe Friday and for all of us in the USA, a wonderful Independence Day weekend. "When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary...."

Good morning to all the friends of the horses who frequent "this good place!"

I wish all of you a happy holiday weekend ~ whether you have elaborate plans for celebrating or will be spending the weekend quietly at home, ENJOY! I hope to be watching some spectacular tennis matches from Wimbledon...

We had our local fireworks display last Saturday (to spread out the wealth of "bombs bursting in air" amongst all the area towns who will be having their displays tonight and tomorrow - wretched weather permitting), and I quite enjoyed watching from the comfort of a chair by my living room window. Sir Seamus the Shy, my poor cat who is afraid of EVERYTHING/EVERYONE but me, always watches the fireworks with me, much to my amazement! He also likes thunderstorms...go figure!

Hopefully everyone will be back, relaxed and recharged, for the next month of "challenging Congress" before their annual August hiatus! WE ARE BARBARO'S EARTHLY VOICE...his equine brothers and sisters are depending on us for their very survival!

I think in the creation of the world, God had an extra day that got lost in history, because it was just for making extraordinary and completely wonderful things.

    Like coffee.

I began a list, but I am too tired to complete it, and of course, of all God's wonders, horses and dogs were at the top of the too-early-this-morning list...

So I will heads back to get the first cup o joe.
fresh ground every morning. (I got this leetle
grinder as a birthday gift from a friend, and i looked at it at first and thought,
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ok....>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
and promptly put it in a cupboard.

The one day, when I ran out of The Dreaded Canned Stuff--I found the beans she had also given me in the freezer, put them in the Leetle Grinder, and VOILA!

The bestest cup o java I had ever produced from MY kitchen. So, the moral is...if anyone ever offers you a leetle coffee grinder, take it and run. It takes an extra minute to pour the beans and grind. And, ah, the aroma.

And you'll never go back to The Dreaded Canned Stuff.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SUSAN! I think her online ID is SJPuleo. (We run into each other often on the MHR chats.) A 4th of July Holiday Birthday. That demands extra celebration days, IMHO>

Take heart all. We do need to take a little break from the calling. (I may just call and see WHO IS AT THEIR LEETLE DESKS today...)

    friday at TBFRIENDS
    ***************************************************
    Friday, July 3rd...

Giving you a break this weekend from my morning blab. I have a chance to earn money at another ranch (saving for that beach condo in Maui) by feeding breakfast early Saturday and Sunday. The regular person wants holiday time off. Then it is back home to feed my own group of trouble makers. So lucky you. I will not return to this website until early Monday morning. The crowd roars. I think tomorrow they have scheduled a parade.

Yesterday I asked for help with our friend Wendy. By 9:00 in the morning her gelding Moses had a new home with Lauren in Oakdale.

Yesterday I asked for help with our friend Kylie. A student at UC Davis, Kylie needed to place a race horse she somehow inherited from the equine hospital. By 9:00 in the morning the race horse had a new home with Kathryn in Walnut Creek.

Yesterday I asked for help with a filly who recently finished last in a race at Stockton. The filly was waiting for transportation to slaughter in Mexico. By 10:00 in the morning the filly had a gorgeous new home with a family from Newcastle.

As always, we need to Thank our Tbfriends horse haulers. Jennifer Wright. Tracie Sturgess. Stephanie Diaz. John & Stacey. Georgia & Jenny. Angela. Sheldon. Steve & Sandy at Hoofbeats.

    more to come

###Jonna, loved your "coffee grinder and beans" story. Horse owners would take that grinder and put it to use in the feed room, zizzing flax seeds, horse pills or whatever else to fine dust for "ease of feeding." Been there, done THAT many times.

That said, doesn't the smell of beans grinding just make you happy? Even at dawn, I can smile at the smell of anything "caffeine-y."

    ### Not sure what the fireworks schedule is around here--we are not supposed to have fireworks within the town limits, but I live in the county. I'm always vigilant regarding fires--only one year did we have a family on our block set off rockets, which were definitely NOT a good idea--and they either moved or had their fun and moved on to something a little less, uh, "invasive."

###Nancy, enjoyed reading both your posts--it's like on some channels there will be a movie and the instant replay. I enjoy that, too. ;oD

###Holiday for me--the office is closed. My boss was excused from the jury. She was Juror #2 until just before the close of the day. That means I won't have to work two weeks full time during the trial and deliberation. I love my part-time job. Full-time is NOT a happy gig for me.

###Stay hydrated, sun-blocked, and/or dry. Safe travels to all and I hope you didn't wait to do your 4th of July grocery shopping until today. "Standing in line" takes on an entirely new meaning on the day before the 4th ;o)

We have until midnight today to get the SOS horses safe. There is a matching game for Goose, a scared older paint gelding. Half of the money is there in the match game. We just need donations to match. Floppy only needs $140, $25 match game left. Then there are Lollipop and Kianne, two nice older mares, who need help.

Even if you can only donate a little, it will be a great help!

    Morning, ABR Famblee:)

Jonna:) I buy whole beans...they say NEVER freeze them..just keep at room temp in airtight container!! I also have a grinder, and I set the coffee up the night before...the coffee maker I have has a 'clock' so it begins the brew at 5:30a and I wake up to that WONDERFUL aroma every morning....I 'shuffle' to the kitchen and pour that ONE cup I drink each day...and mai old brain KICKS INTO GEAR:)

Nancy...I liked your post this morning, too..and TWO is even BEDDER!! :)

Kay: Glad for your newfound 'part-time' employment gig..I can SO relate to the full-time being a real DRAG!

Robyn:) I just LOVE being 'Aunty Lynne' to ALL the critters..but DOGS DO RULE:)

Everyone, have a good day today...be safe out there...

####Robyn,TGIF's are a wonderful thing when the ole bones creak and groan. I hope your long weekend will help to rejunevate. May it be filled with sunshine.

###Lynne, I must say I'm sorry to see that Deetle went home, but you are probably glad for the rest and Seymour must be relieved he doesnt't have to live on the bookcase. I hope Deetle will come again to visit for a day.

###To all, Happy 4th of July, since I'm American as well, I always try to celebrate both holidays; however my employers don't agree with the day off idea. Oh well, everyone please keep safe this weekend and enjoy.

May all the horses running this weekend come home safe.

Judy Scott:) LOL! After Deetle left y'day, Seymoure could of course, watch the whole procedure of her leaving through the front door...He lay there on top of the bookcase a little while...then, got up, stretched..loooooked into the kitchen....and surveyed the l/room and d/room areas...then peeeeered through my bedroom door...very CAREFULLY got himself around the short wall to the top of the frige/freezer...jumped down to the kitchen counter..I JUST HATE WHEN HE'S ON THE COUNTERS...I go through embarrassing amounts of Clorox Clean Up!!

He jumped down to the kitchen floor and as 'politely' as he is capable of....asked for his KITTEH TUNA, PLEASE!! LOL!

People say animals have no sense of time...I'm not buying that one...and I am sure none of you are, either...every afternoon, around 2:30, Seymoure begins 'circling the wagons'...because he KNOWS at 3p, he gets a spoonful of KITTEH TUNA....How he knows this, I haven't a clue...he has kibble in his dish 24/7, he's NOT starving..but he knows when it is TIME:)

I'm thinking Miss Deetle will be making a few return trips next door...so am glad to accomodate in any way I am able to help her Famblee:) Wheee!

    OUR FEDERAL CAMPAIGN
    -------------
UPDATE Friday 7/3 AND REMINDER - re-posting from yesterday and the day before and the day before . . .

No new news on the federal front this morning - holding at 143 cosponsors in the House for HR 503 and 17 cs in the Senate for S 727. We are making significant progress - please keep contacting the target lists AND your own unsigned Rep/Sen(s) - lists coming right up in my next post(s).

Thanks Jonna for reminding us that we have until the end of 2010, NOT the end of 2009, to work with these bills. Not that we WANT to wait that long, only that we have that entire extra year to "gitter done" . . . A much better prospect than running out of time at the end of THIS year, as we did last year with HR 6598 . . . Of course we want slaughter to end YESTERDAY - but everything in DC seems to move with the speed of molasses . . . and I am glad to be reminded that we have that add'l year.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em . . .

    ## Lynne, did you read last night when I said
Nanny and the Deetle was better than a tv show ?
I enjoyed your writing about the day so much.

    ## Kay,
Congrats on your mini-break ! I guess jury duty is good for something sometimes .

    Mornin' all ,
did anyone read on The Drudge Report yesterday about the travels of our illustrious Congresspeople????
It was so terrible to read and think of , with
    our horses dying daily,

First, some of them went to Kuwait , which I
consider worthy , but oh famblee,
    the rest...

They traveled far and yon to places like
Italy and Jamaica and political hotspots
like that - places that need their brilliant
    expertise .

When I think of our horses, traveling on
hot, stinking, crowded trucks, crossing hundreds
of miles in conditions unmentionable ...
Then think of Ms. Pelosi's bony a-- sitting
in her private jet we are paying for... in air-conditioned comfort...

I just see red famblee, red...
    red anger.
    red horse blood.
    This just has to stop.
how do you make politicians listen
and do the will of the people.

When I was a young woman we had a song
    that said hear my roar
Now as an older woman, I say
    hear my SHRIEK !

here is a link to a thread about Horses on the Hill that contains posts with hotlinks to the various links referred to in the following message.

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=38390.1

excerpt from message from Deb & Shelley, Anti Slaughter Issues: US - STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF JUNE 29

    HORSES ON THE HILL!

We strongly encourage everyone who is able, to attend this event. We'll keep you posted on any updates. Please let us know if you are going by sending us an email. If you are looking for t shirts, caps, etc, please visit http: // www. cafepress.com/AAHSmerchandise [close up spaces]

Please mark your calendar and join us in Washington, DC on July 14th to meet with your legislators and show your support for America’s horses and the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503/S. 727). The last Horses on the Hill was a huge success, let’s make this one even bigger and better!

As plans unfold for the daylong event you can start right now by signing up to attend. Please send an email to blair@awionline.org telling us if you plan on attending. Feel free to email if you have any questions.

    Then follow these steps:

Visit AWI’s Compassion Index to find your US Representative and two US Senators. Enter your zip code and hit go. [note - link in the above-noted thread]

Call their offices and ask to speak with their animal staffer, let them know you are a constituent. Schedule a meeting on July 14th between 10 am and 4 pm. You will be scheduling a total of three meetings (one in US House, two in US Senate). You can ask to meet with your legislator, as well, but meeting with the animal staffer is very beneficial. Questions about calling Capitol Hill? Click here. [note - link in the thread noted at top of this post]

After you set your meetings, come back to AWI’s Compassion Index and fill out the form with your meeting information. This will help us both coordinate your meetings and follow up after you leave. We will provide specific information (brochures, fact sheets, etc…) that will help in your meetings.

Send this email to everyone you know and ask them to join us in Washington, DC on July 14th for America’s horses.

Make your travel plans to join us on Capitol Hill. DC is a great summer destination. There are lots of things to do.

If you have any questions please email Blair at blair@awionline.org. We look forward to seeing you all on July 14th. Be sure to bookmark http: //www. horsesonthehill.org and check back often for updates and new information.

Still more to do for Barbaro's brothers and sisters - WE STILL NEED CONSTITUENT CONTACT - pls keep after your OWN Representative and Senators.

CURRENT AS OF Friday July 3

In addition to the current weekly AAHS strategy (week of June 29), which is posted here [close up spaces]

    http: // forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=38628.1

along with our AAHS House target list and links to daily HAHS 'short list' - and please work with those lists as a priority - when you have a leeeettle extra time/energy -

PLEASE KEEP CONTACTING YOUR OWN SENATORS AND REP (though this is not spelled out in the current AAHS directions). We are getting feedback that many legislators really only listen to their OWN constituents.

July 3 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

It often happens that our respect for an illness is more potent than respect for our own healing powers. We don't believe we can easily give up what brings us attention, even if that has placed us in difficulty. We certainly don't want something to be wrong, but the power of too much negative attention is subtle, mean, and seductive. Learn to fight fear and negativity in the bud right at the beginning. Nip the talk, the fear, the negativity right at the beginning before it has time to rule your life. Nobody wants trouble, no one willingly puts a hand to it, but it is easy to be fooled by the fearsome idea that nothing can be done--but not by an outside force.

All things in this world have souls or spirits.

###Lynne, I can just picture Seymoure making sure that Deetle didn't come bounding back in just to surprise him. Yes, I know that animals have a sense of time and days of the week as well. Anyway, glad to hear all is back to normal. I hope the temperatures stay cooler for your critters. I remember July 4 weekends as being the hottest of the summer and back in my day when stores were closed on Sundays and holidays was not the time for the swamp cooler to quit. Happened to us yessiree. That's when we got our first window air conditioner but not before sweltering it out. Keep cool and have a good day.

No names please... The family from Winters. The family from Elk Grove. All the way from Japan. All the way from Memphis. All the way from Ireland. All the way from Farmington, Utah.

If I left out your name (a really good chance I did) I am very sorry. Please know that Cathy and I are forever grateful for all your help with horses. No way on earth could we ever do this alone.

God Bless America. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend, and be sure to hug your horses. See you Monday.

If you count (and we always do) sight unseen horses from foreclosures who we placed into new homes, and if you count single rescues from feed lots who went directly to their new homes, then adoptions in 2008 totaled 616. 14 of those horses did not work out, and have been returned.

    Adoptions in 2008 include:

Top Left: The very lucky Lit Royale, who is loved by Jessa.

Top Right: Turbulent City gets a new home with Onica.

Bottom Left: Banker is off to live with Katie.

Bottom Right: David & Brenda are the happy new owners of Hasti Serve.

Rest in peace, dearly loved CHIEF, and may light perpetual shine upon you. Perhaps this was your personal "Independence Day" because I envision you waking in a place of great beauty and peace, free from the ravages of chf, once again able to carry a brick or anything else that strikes your fancy...and of course with an abundance of 'nilla wafers and pb crackers.

You were a very heroic doggie as you fought back time after time from your illness ~ all your frens here loved hearing about your antics such as shredding books, and we will miss you terribly. But mourning is for the living; we know you are fine now, renewed and restored to health.

And yes, you WILL be reunited with your dear person one fine day...

    CANDLES FOR CHIEF

Sandra....I know how difficult the decision to help that wondermous boy to the Bridge has been for you...I know how 'numb' you are feeling right now..but you've done RIGHT for Chiefster...He knows that...we know you know that, too, Sandra!

I know I speak for all of us here, when I say how totally GRATEFUL I am to have gotten to 'know' your boy!! His antics...his fears...his likes and dislikes...and most ESPECIALLY his LOVE OF *NILLA WAFERS* AND *PEANUT BUTTER 'KRAKERS'*:)

All dogs are SO special...but once in a great while, we get SERIOUSLY lucky, and get a *CHIEF* or a *MURPHY* or a *KAISER* or a *JESSIE* .....so MANY more!

I love you, Sandra...we all do! I'll always remember *CHIEFSTER*...gosh, he almost felt like my own...because you so graciously shared him here with us. Thank You!

    Oh honey!

Sandra....i would give a million bucks to just be there to hug you hand you Kleenex and more hot fudge for the sundaes we would be consuming.

You know, you and Chief are forever wed together in my head; like Lynne/Murphy and Wendy/Jag and Janice/Kaiser and all our tough FoBs who go to war everyday for our horses, and when we get done, we depend on our animals so much.

I am so proud of you for your determination to make Chief well and your forbearance in keeping him going until he was ready to depart for Heaven.

And now, for your great courage in letting Chief go back to God. I am sure there was a little drift of wind and feathers as he left his well-loved body.

We are with you, and love you, and Lynne knows how to get hold of me--I think you also have my phone number--if you need extra peoples to just listen.

I just love you girl, and I will ALWAYS think of Chief in the same parenthesis around that thought.

Please call out if you need anything. And honey, if relief begins to slip in, just let it. You turned your heart, mind and life over to Chief's well-being. And we all know how exhausting that is. Chief will want you to take a deep, deep breath and let it out.

    It'll be OK, dear one.

Sandra, I am so very sorry.....you know that you gave Chief the greatest gift, to let him go. He is now whole and well again just waiting to be reunited with you. You both have been so brave...we all are thinking of you and praying. I will look for Chief's star tonight, I know it will be the brightest in the Heavens.

Can anybody help the SOS horses that are on the feedlot? 8 horses, all have a place to go, 6 have the funds they need but 2 need help.

Kianne and Lollipop - 2 17 year old tb mares, one with jockey club papers. Both are gentle, friendly riding horses. They only have til 9 pm Pacific or midnight Eastern time or they'll ship to slaughter.

I also want to say how very sorry I am to read about Chief. I've been following his struggles and have always been thinking of him and wishing him the best. I'm so sorry that you lost him today and will be thinking of you.

Barbaro's candles are in ninth place. (I just lit a bunch, so he will move up a little.)
Many people will be out of town over the 4th, I imagine. Please try to stop in to keep his candles going. Thank you.

Sandra, I am so sad to read that Chief has crossed the Bridge. What a heroic furbaby...but he is now whole, he is now free and can breathe all the fresh air he wants now...and he will always be close by to you...just look for the signs thru your tears. He's there.
