    Barbaro Updates: 888

    updates are now here.

Update 5248: An addition to the Woodbine Characters series:

Robert Landry, jockey. Congratulations to jockey Robert Landry who rode his 2,000th winner this afternoon at Woodbine!

Update 5247: My weekly contribution to Eclipse Magazine: Alex Brown 1 July 2009.

Update 5246: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

Quite naturally, the highlight of the American racing scene last weekend was the Rachel Alexandra/Zenyatta show. But how did it play abroad? The Australian noted that:

Rachel Alexandra has grown a Secretariat-like profile in the past two months, galvanising the hardened racing public and reaching out to catch the attention of Mr Average Joe and Josie.

It just happened that on Saturday on the US west coast, the five-year-old Street Cry mare Zenyatta won her 11th consecutive race, the Group I Vanity Handicap, to stay unbeaten.

Yet Zenyatta's excellent feat was swallowed almost completely by the events on the east coast where Rachel Alexandra made a stunning debut at New York's Belmont Park.

And while I would quibble with the notion that Rachel Alexandra has gained a following like Secretariat yet (even if she wins like him when she feels like it), I would on the whole agree with their larger point - non-racing fans know who she is, while Zenyatta is still just the first half of a Police album as far as they are aware. (I base this on my extremely scientific survey of my work colleagues and family, many of whom have asked me 'what is Rachel doing next?' but who look on blankly if I reply I hope she will face Zenyatta at some point).

While we in the racing community debate whose win was 'better' (Rachel's time! Zenyatta's weight assignment!) the fact remains that unless the Zenyatta/Rachel Alexandra rivalry can happen in person (and, ideally, on 'Jockeys'), few in the general public will ever get to know Zenyatta - and that's the real shame.

Were you aware that Rachel Alexandra has her own official diary? Now you are. While in general I'm not a fan of the Horse Writing In The First Person genre, I did very much enjoy the behind-the-scenes video courtesy of Blayne Blasi, teenage son of assistant trainer Scott Blasi. I hope to see more video added along those lines. I would also like to see the videos Zenyatta's trainer, John Sheriffs, has been posting on YouTube gain a wider audience - an official Zenyatta website promoting them along with other content would be very welcome.

And while I recognize that seeing Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra share a starting gate is an unlikely dream (even with the suggestion that they could meet 'after the Breeders' Cup' - when? where?), I must continue to suggest the following: come on people - Del Cap!

Here at Superfecta HQ we are about to head to Kentucky for some downtime, so please excuse our absence and expect to see us back in action on July 13th. Should anything particularly exciting happen in the meantime, fear not - the revolution will be Twittered.

    See you after the fourth!

Update 5245: It's July 1, which means today is Canada Day. Happy birthday Canada!

I had 8 sets for Steve this morning. Four before the break and four after the break which each went to the gate for a little schooling. All galloped nicely and schooled quietly. A fairly straightforward morning's work.

And continuing our Woodbine Characters series:

Constant Montpellier, jockey. Constant Montpellier is a jockey here at Woodbine. He rides for a number of trainers, including David Cotey. Constant was the first jockey to ride Mine That Bird in his races riding him in his first two starts. I wrote about Constant for The Rail: Mine That Bird's First Jockey Sings His Praises.

Robert Fierheller, gate crew. Robert Fierheller is on the gate crew here at Woodbine. While I don't know Robert well at all, the gate crew here seems to be very good, and patient. We school a lot of horses here in the mornings and they spend a lot of time handling our horses with care. As a member of the gate crew, Robert works in the mornings from 8 am to 10 am each day other than Tuesday when we have no gate schooling in the mornings. And then in the afternoons for each race day. Busy work.

Update 5244: There has been a lot of "chatter" in racing circles about the possible match up between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta. As things stand this remains somewhat unlikely, at least until the Breeders' Cup which itself is unlikely: Zenyatta, 'Rachel' Duel Unlikely Before BC.

    And please keep calling.

    From Harriette Brillant-Hawk's daily devotional:

"Sometimes when the sun is getting low in the west and seems unable to reach anything, an amazing event occurs:something begins to glow in the dark woods. A shaft of sunlight has found an opening in the foliage and a tree glows as though from within. So it is with each of us. When we are inwardly lighted, we are greatly improved."

Somehow, I just KNOW , Barb, that you checked on your old gentleman on and off like a good mom. Having an animals in trouble is like having a newborn in the house...you never really sleep. Up and down, tip-toeing at times, but checking.

Hope your Farrier has some good ideas. And I am so glad to read the as of last night in AZ, Freckles--and you--seemed to be getting relief.

July 1 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

The woods, rich from well-spaced rainfall, make almost solid shade so that nothing gets enough sunshine. The shade garden thrives from this unusual season and the hostas, caladiums, and elephant ears are in their glory. The ferns would like a little more light--which will come as the season advances. Light is so important to nature and to us humans. Seeing the sunshine on a hilltop or a field of bright orange flowers gives us a spurt of energy because we are seeing life.

Sometimes when the sun is getting low in the west and seems unable to reach anything, an amazing event occurs: something begins to glow in the dark woods. A shaft of sunlight has found an opening in the foliage and a tree glows as though from within. So it is with each of us. When we are inwardly lighted, we are greatly improved.

I don't want to settle. I love to roam the prairies. There I feel free and happy, but when we settle down we grow pale and die.

re-post from yesterday - same "no new news" today
    -------------
No new news on the federal front this morning - holding at 143 cosponsors in the House for HR 503 and 17 cs in the Senate for S 727. We are making significant progress - please keep contacting the target lists AND your own unsigned Rep/Sen(s) - lists coming right up in my next post.

Thanks Jonna for reminding us that we have until the end of 2010, NOT the end of 2009, to work with these bills. Not that we WANT to wait that long, only that we have that entire extra year to "gitter done" . . . A much better prospect than running out of time at the end of THIS year, as we did last year with HR 6598 . . . Of course we want slaughter to end YESTERDAY - but everything in DC seems to move with the speed of molasses . . . and I am glad to be reminded that we have that add'l year.

Wednesday July 1 - per the AAHS weekly strategy post,

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=38628.1

please work both the AAHS target list AND the short HAHS list that changes every weekday.
And pls send any/all feedback to me, potlucky@sbcglobal.net

AAHS is also asking everyone to participate in HORSES ON THE HILL, details of which are in my next post.

Here are today's Federal Target Lists: a) AAHS list of cosponsors of HR 6598 last year who haven't signed on yet for HR 503; and b) HAHS "short lists" that change every weekday.

(Note - AAHS = Americans Against Horse Slaughter; HAHS = Humanity Against Horse Slaughter, a Yahoo group)

AAHS FEDERAL TARGET LIST - Week of June 29, 2009

updated as of Wednesday, July 1

(Note - The date shown after each Rep's name below, is the date he/she signed on to cosponsor former antiHS bill HR 6598 in the 110th Congress.)

Remember - as former cosponsors of anti-horse slaughter legislation, these Reps are already on our side and should be easy to approach. We are seeking for them to sign up to cosponsor HR 503.

AND - with our current strategy - we are looking for INPUT from these offices (and from the HAHS daily lists) for you to email to me as per the directions in this week's AAHS strategy post.

Don't hesitate to email me - potlucky@sbcglobal.net - if you have questions about this strategy.

    HORSES ON THE HILL!

here is a link to a thread about Horses on the Hill that contains posts with hotlinks to the various links referred to in the following message.

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=38390.1

excerpt from message from Deb & Shelley, Anti Slaughter Issues: US - STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF JUNE 29

    HORSES ON THE HILL!

We strongly encourage everyone who is able, to attend this event. We'll keep you posted on any updates. Please let us know if you are going by sending us an email. If you are looking for t shirts, caps, etc, please visit http: // www. cafepress.com/AAHSmerchandise [close up spaces]

Please mark your calendar and join us in Washington, DC on July 14th to meet with your legislators and show your support for America’s horses and the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503/S. 727). The last Horses on the Hill was a huge success, let’s make this one even bigger and better!

As plans unfold for the daylong event you can start right now by signing up to attend. Please send an email to blair@awionline.org telling us if you plan on attending. Feel free to email if you have any questions.

    Then follow these steps:

Visit AWI’s Compassion Index to find your US Representative and two US Senators. Enter your zip code and hit go. [note - link in the above-noted thread]

Call their offices and ask to speak with their animal staffer, let them know you are a constituent. Schedule a meeting on July 14th between 10 am and 4 pm. You will be scheduling a total of three meetings (one in US House, two in US Senate). You can ask to meet with your legislator, as well, but meeting with the animal staffer is very beneficial. Questions about calling Capitol Hill? Click here. [note - link in the thread noted at top of this post]

After you set your meetings, come back to AWI’s Compassion Index and fill out the form with your meeting information. This will help us both coordinate your meetings and follow up after you leave. We will provide specific information (brochures, fact sheets, etc…) that will help in your meetings.

Send this email to everyone you know and ask them to join us in Washington, DC on July 14th for America’s horses.

Make your travel plans to join us on Capitol Hill. DC is a great summer destination. There are lots of things to do.

If you have any questions please email Blair at blair@awionline.org. We look forward to seeing you all on July 14th. Be sure to bookmark http: //www. horsesonthehill.org and check back often for updates and new information.

Still more to do for Barbaro's brothers and sisters - WE STILL NEED CONSTITUENT CONTACT - pls keep after your OWN Representative and Senators.

CURRENT AS OF Wednesday July 1

In addition to the current weekly AAHS strategy (week of June 29), which is posted here [close up spaces]

    http: // forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=38628.1

along with our House target list and links to daily HAHS 'short list' - and please work with those lists as a priority - when you have a leeeettle extra time/energy -

PLEASE KEEP CONTACTING YOUR OWN SENATORS AND REP (though this is not spelled out in the current AAHS directions). We are getting feedback that many legislators really only listen to their OWN constituents.

    Asking for help....

Jim @ Tierra Madre has had a bad week vet-wise. Charlie had to have cryosurgery to remove suspected cancer, turned out not to be cancer but the cost was the same. Suzie Q then had a bout of colic and had to be tubed. The best news is that both horses seem ok now but the vet bill is over $800 total. We have a $100 match game going and could really use a few bucks.

SOS equine rescue has 7 horses plus a baby foal in urgent need on a feedlot. They will ship to slaughter on Independence Day if bail and QT funds aren't raised and homes found by Friday. A very short amount of time for life or death situations. There is:
Gorgeous paint gelding who was probably beaten. He needs love and patience and is already a great riding horse.
A granddaughter of Seattle Slew who is very friendly.
A lovely appy gelding who is extremely friendly and is a riding horse.
A mare with her baby foal. The baby won't ship I guess, she'll be ripped from her mom when they load her on the slaughter truck.
A super nice 13 year old shorter mare who will make a great kids horse.
A very friendly TB who rides great and is very friendly.
A gelding with floppy ears and a super ride.

3 of them need homes and they ALL need funds. Please check out SOS Equine Rescue. This is urgent.

    JOE FOR WEDNESDAY
    ****************************************************
    UPDATE... 10:00 a.m.

The pregnant mare in Mira Loma has been saved. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Wednesday, July 1st... The blazing hot temps have gone away, so feed lots in Wilton, Pittsburgh, and Vallejo are once again shipping to slaughter in Canada and Mexico. Horse killer Kevin Lewis operates out of Pittsburgh, and he phones last night to say there are several thoroughbreds, each with a racing tattoo. It is a jungle out there.

A horse killer named Scott from Mira Loma, wants to sell us a preggo thoroughbred mare. A horse killer named Felix from Turlock, wants to sell us a yearling colt with a tucked up testicle. Horse killer John Capers has two yearling colts. Horse killer Manny Phelps says he has an old bay mare who can no longer get pregnant.

If you would like any of the above, my cell is 530-383-2120. Horses are usually priced by the pound, plus there is a shipping charge.

An e-mail from Kala, who lives in Texas. Kala writes: I am 15 and first thing everyday I read your website. On Monday you were talking about hot weather and horses coming and going. In one sentence you wrote about a horse coming to you from the race track with a broken leg. That sentence has stayed with me. You made a broken leg sound so incidental. The broken leg should have been your message for the day. Instead it was hot weather and how crowded you are. That one broken leg on that one poor horse. You could have gone into further detail. You could have explored the suffering race horses experience on a daily basis. I was very disappointed in you Joe.

(keeping the masses happy... difficult to do)

Kala has a point. I take for granted everyone knows our ranch. All the injuries from race tracks. Even a broken pelvis. Fractured cannon bones and ankles. Knees the size of a watermelon.

But why detail the obvious? In my golden years I much prefer exploring possibilities. I love to get kids addicted to horses. Not enough hours in the day to branch out on your focal point. And my focal point is the magic of thoroughbreds.

Speaking of which, there are currently thoroughbreds wondering where is that old guy with breakfast? Chores are forever. James Taylor on the oldies station. Delicious hot coffee from Peets. Old doughnuts made by Raleys. Later we might be 92 degrees. Wish I had not used watermelon for a metaphor. Now I want to go buy one...

    Joe

In 2006 there were 356 adoptions. Here are 4:

Top Left: This is Cassandra, who goes home with the love of her life Carlisle.

Top Right: Mary with her new gelding Friendly Fire. Take a look next to our house. Porky Pig waits for a banana.

Bottom Left: Kim adopts the tall handsome B Day.

Bottom Right: Tahnee, Stacey, & Rhianna are now the owners of the gray filly Dreams.

    HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Posted by: LindaVA at July 1, 2009 6:32 PM

    JOE SHELTON
    has seen it all.

    What Golden Years?
He is tending to battered TBs, dying horses that deserve a soft, cool, quiet place in their house yard with Pony Boy to watch over them.

He will take his grooming kit and go tend to the confused and doomed horses in the pens. How this must amuse the KBs. I wonder if THEY ever wonder WHY Joe does this?

He has to interact with the scum of the Earth, kill buyers. They actually trust him. They call him to alert him to certain horses. Sometimes horses that REALLY need JOE. Mares in foal. Horses that are dying.

He has to dance with the Devil on a daily basis.
He has learned that this is how it is done.

And then, kids that mis-read him, who have not read him ENOUGH. Oy.

But here, little Kala. This is how Joe keeps doing what he does. Keep reading. Learn something.

"Speaking of which, there are currently thoroughbreds wondering where is that old guy with breakfast? Chores are forever. James Taylor on the oldies station. Delicious hot coffee from Peets. Old doughnuts made by Raleys. Later we might be 92 degrees. Wish I had not used watermelon for a metaphor. Now I want to go buy one..."

Now he wants to go buy a watermelon. I laughed my $&& off.

Go Joe, Go. (And Cathy right behind him...)
May you live long and prosper. And make us all wiser. Teach us. Make us cry.

    And laugh.

###Re Joe: How he keeps doing what he does? He and Cathy and others like him (and everyone who is a FOB or a FoFOB) just keep digging--because there IS a pony (or two or three) in there somewhere. God bless them--and us--all.

SOS Equine Rescue feedlot horses. Here is an especially urgent plea for Kianne and Lollipop. They are the last 2 who need home offers, the other 6 have a place to go. It seems to hopeless til they get a home offer.
Kianne and Lollipop are both very friendly and loving and rode good. Both are 17 years old, Kianne comes with papers.

Is there someone with space in their hearts and homes??

Shoer was out a bit ago and put on special shoes and pads. He said he was impressed that Freckles could stand on ONE foot, while he did the other. They are both front feet, the worst, as they can't rest the front ones.

Freckles had Bute in him. Last evening when it wore off, Freckles was much worse, so it may be false optimism. Only time will tell.

Thanks for all your candles and prayers.

A snippet from Alex's article mentioned above. Go. Read.

    Alex Brown 1 July 2009
    **************************************************
Again, for this week’s update, I am going to highlight the ‘highlights’ from last week’s ‘tweets’ from Alex Brown Racing

On Tuesday I went to the OLEX auction, again. And I tweeted 52 updates from the auction. You can check out my picture after the sale. My rationale for doing this, the 52 updates, is to bring more transparency to all aspects of the horse industry.

There are glorious aspects (Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta dominating over the weekend) and less glorious aspects to the industry. I believe we shouldn’t ignore what we don’t like, if it persists as an element of our industry. Anyway my ‘tweets’ did lead to some discussion on Twitter regarding whether the updates were too much. And I know of at least one person who decided to no longer follow my updates: read for yourself.

When I next go to the auction, I will tweet aggressively.
    ***********************************************
Yes, it is hard to read. Alex's clipped, close to -the-vest style. But his words, and the prices of these sentient beings break the heart.

Harden up people. This is real. It's getting worse every day. Horses are going to slaughter in MX and CN in record numbers.

Please try to be part of the solution --in some way. $5 a month to your favorite rescue. Call your officials. Work locally at Fairs and horse Shows.

We're trying to move a very, very big mountain. It's not supposed to be easy. Alex's quiet notes from the seats of the OLEX auction House are quintessential Mister Alex Brown.

He's on the same learning curve we are. Come along. Or don't but don't expect Alex Brown to change his commitment to American horses.

That this website--and all the add-ons still exists so far beyond the gift and loss of Barbaro, are, imho--a tribute to Alex' continuing education in and devotion to changing the plight of the horse--all breeds, all sizes.

There's a big rescue going on through SOS. Eight horses needing home or funds on Friday. There's a mare and her baby, an older gelding with floppy ears who worked at a ranch, a scared older paint gelding, a sweet appy gelding who was a kid's horse, and a really nice super broke mare. They all needs funds.

A pretty registered mare who is the grandaughter of Seattle Slew still needs a home offer, as does an older mare who was a kid's ranch horse.

To Bobbie B: Love your term "Neithernor"! But I hope for Mrs. Jackson's sake that a filly will be born to La Ville Rouge.

To Nancy: What a torrential rain today at work in RI. When will this rain end? I don't recall as wet a Summer since 1986 or 1987....
To Debbie LA: Please listen to your body while trying to recover from pleurisy. It can be excruciatingly painful and lengthy in its course if one tries to overdo things. Have a great time in the Smokies!
To Sherry: Keeping Aaron in my thoughts as he heads into the rehab process.

    ## Sandra,

That awful heat must be getting to you. It is to me in N.C.
It's not like you to be so silent, so you know if anything is wrong, you have frens here, pal.

I'm glad Chief is holding his own, bless him.
    See ya soon?
    Bye now,

Just another plea for help for the SOS horses. Kianne and Lollipop need homes. All 8 of them need funds to keep them from shipping to slaughter on Independence Day.

Is there anyone who can offer a home or funds?

I am sorry to be leaving people out...too tired, just keeping all in prayer as I drop into sleep tonight...so many needs, must get these bills moving faster to keep our horses safe. Things worse every day in MX and CN.

Please be careful where you place your trust and your hard-earned money for rescues. Ask where the horses are going. Ask for follow-up. Ask if you can donate to the rescue's Vet, feedmill, hay supplier, etc. We need transparency. We need to be sure that the good hearted FoBs are actually sending horses to safety, not back into the HS pipeline.

As in GH adoption groups: there are good ones, and there are people who put new hounds off the tracks at immediate risk by not screening carefully enough. By not evaluating their fosters well enough; long enough.

After nearly 20 years in GH rescue, I now understand owners who really love their hounds who will humanely enthanise them when they are no longer "profitable." Rather than send them to what one big gh owner told me he felt was "an uncertain future," with gh groups they no longer feel they can trust.

    Very sad. Very true.

God bless. Tomorrow another day to get it right:
