    Barbaro Updates: 887

    updates are now here.

Update 5243: Off to OLEX, and I'll be tweeting updates.

And Salon wrote about horse slaughter. I was interviewed and am quoted: Horses to the slaughter.

Update 5242: Good news: Drumroll Please: Dam of Barbaro is Carrying a Filly! excerpt:

"Mr. and Mrs. Jackson are delighted that she continues to be in foal and it is a prospective full sister to Barbaro," Bell said.

Update 5241: A very pleasant morning this morning at Woodbine. I had six sets. All galloped, and all galloped very nicely. Luis, our jockey, was in to work a few horses. I went up to the track to watch the last one work, and it looked like she worked nicely.

During break I snapped a couple more pictures, in the track kitchen, for the Woodbine Characters series:

Don Parente, Eurico Rosa DaSilva's agent. Don Parente, who I don't know personally, is agent for one of the leading riders here, Eurico Rose DaSilva. Eurico recently won the Queen's Plate aboard Eye of the Leopard, so this team is obviously doing very well. Eurico rode one horse for us last year, I think to a second place finish. A very charismatic jockey. Don also used to be agent for Chantal Sutherland.

Joe Walls, trainer. Joe Walls, a trainer at Woodbine, is also father to Eclipse Award winning jockey Mickey Walls. Joe always has a good story to tell, and is someone I have been fortunate to get to know a little during my time at Woodbine. He recently had a bit of a Cancer scare, but told me this morning that all is well.

Update 5240: Here is the ABR Facebook Group e-mail for this week: Tweet this: OLEX, Chantal Sutherland, Rachel Alexandra, Paragallo, Chad Beckon, Greg De Gannes, Iavorone, Dutrow, Paragallo, Rene Douglas, Kelly Carlson, Olredlgetcha, Rahy's Attorney, Sterwins, Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Woodbine, Tour of the Cat, Syphon City, Bison City, Frazee's Folly, Woodbine Characters.

    And please keep calling.

Hiya, FsOB! Greetings from what may be a sultry day on the banks of the Thames. I wish that you could see the river. It's rare to ever see it this perfectly flat and reflective, with just a few current undulations in the centre. Very mirror-like. Hmm, maybe we'll have another storm today....

Alex, any news on Ernie Paragallo's attempt to negotiate a plea deal? Also, if anyone who goes on Facebook could let us know what has impeded Rene Douglas' healing, that would be greatly appreciated.

    #### To Margie: Sounds like you'll miss Harry Potter! One of my late Huskies used to take me by the hand in the way that you described Harry doing with you. I think it was my Illya, whose unique character is worthy of a book of remembrance some day. Hope your hip loosens up today.
To Sandra: Thinking of you and Chief in this heat. Nikita & I probably couldn't tolerate the weather extremes in Lubbock. ####

Robyn: I read that he had a second bout of pneumonia and had to be moved back to the hospital temporarily. Something about him working too hard in rehab.

If you were one of the first for Independence Day...what would you say, what would you change?

How would our horses and animals be treated differently?

Please CALL, FAX, EMAIL...our horses need their Independence....they were never meant to be slaughter barbaric for horsemeat for overseas...

God created the mighty horse and all animals...and cruelty, neglect, abuse and slaughter was never, never in God's plans.

    #######
Please read the db...pick a rescue, or two...and help...and be the watchdog or carekeeper or check out the rescues and make sure all have the true welfare of our horses and animals in mind....

If one or two, or MORE of our government officials goes astray....greed affects all kinds people, in all kinds of occupations and organizations.

I know...dogs are sent for research, bait, to feed alligators, zoos,. and our HORSES...God help them...

If we are not there, WHO?

Congress wants a RECESS???? please this is the year to get the Barbaro bill passed.

ROBYN - did you hear that we've had TWICE the normal rainfall in the past month here in water-logged CT? How I dearly wish we could share some of our soggy abundance with those in parts of the west who are parched and sweltering!!!

    ###
JOAN - Congress will be gone for the entire month of August, as per usual...and heaven only knows how long they are off for the Fourth of July. Hmmmm, most people I know have Friday off (if they're lucky), celebrate on Saturday, and then right back to work on Sunday. Soooooooo, peeps, we have ONE MONTH to work miracles before DC shuts down in August - ugh!

Prayers and blessings for our beloved NICANOR and LENTENOR (and indeed, for all the dear horses)that they stay safe and sound!

###I'm sharpening my marker pen and preparing to vote out a whole bunch of people who have forgotten they are sent to DC to do more than vote themselves raises, more than healthy retirement packages and a health plan better than many private individuals can afford while ignoring the wishes of those of us who voted to send them there--and putting us in the throes of Social Security and what will be rationed health care for the elderly and the sick.

Despite the short senator from California's rude remarks to a member of the armed forces at a hearing a week or so ago, neither she nor the rest of these boneheads back East "work very hard to get their titles." They are ELECTED and if the system worked and voters were THINKING, they would not RE-elect these arrogant "Mommies and Daddies" over and over and OVER ad nauseum to become legends in their own minds (assuming, that is they HAVE minds) and think that they know better than WE do.

So the Congress's rush to recess with LOTS of work waiting--some of it having been shelved last year, left undone, so we "start over"--does not surprise me.

We deserve what we get because we keep putting these slimeballs back in office, and we don't pay attention to what is being done to this country.

As I said, I'm sharpening my marker or maybe I need to sharpen that pokey thing (can't have any hanging chads) so that whatever system greets me at the polling place a year from now, I'll be prepared to vote OUT anyone who is an incumbent unless that person has proven by word/deed he or she has been performing as we, the voters, have wished.

    ###End of rant.

###Safe travels to all. Respite from rain for CT and environs, gentle breezes for the hot parts of the country, and good weather for the rest of youse.

Shoulder better. Not perfect, but better. Read on a medical Web site that what I have, "impingement," is typical in "older adult."

Well! Can't IMAGINE who they are talking about. I'll vote THEM out, too.

###Debbie L.A.--pleurisy. {{{ }}} and get well soon. My mother had that, and you're exactly right--pain in the lungs. Take meds, follow doctor's orders, and don't overdue.

Was on my employer's spelling bee team yesterday. Can do "pleurisy," but "lederhosen" kicked us out of the competition. I had it written down correctly, but the three other team members thought there was an 'i' in there somewhere.

Bummer. We were not alone in getting eliminated on that word.

    ###Anyway, Debbie L.A., take care.

    TWOS-DAYE at TBFRENS
    PART UNO
    ***************************************************
    Tuesday, June 30th...

We were expecting a family from Los Angeles. On the phone they asked would it be possible to meet some of your horses. The daughter said they were on vacation in San Francisco. She promised to be here before dark. Daily readers of my website, and this was their only chance to visit.

Right before dark a big SUV in our driveway. I said glad you could make it. Here is Oscar Award. He loves attention and treats.

Dad said hey that is swell, and thanks for showing us your horse. But all we wanted was directions to the casino.

    Oooops... wrong family.

A newly arrived race horse named Naughty Nine. A cute little lame dark bay gelding. I suppose we will call him Naughty. He was here for less than an hour before somehow unhooking the latch to his gate. Naughty was naughty. Stirred up some dust. Tried to mount Misty. Knocked over my radio. Kicked Limo. Stole grain from Zoe. Finally Naughty allowed me to catch him. He was huffing and puffing. Put his head against my chest. Said okay, take me back to my pen.

    more to come

Posted by: jonnagrey at June 30, 2009 3:14 PM

LOL!!! *NAUGHTY* Nancy!! Joe has a horse who is apparently your NAMESAKE!! I hope he settles down and behaves himself now!! OY!

I know today will be a much more 'comfortable' day for Joe and his horses there in Woodland..the Delta Breezes were nearly 'howling' late last night...and Woodland certainly reaps the benefits of that marine air...it's good!! Sacramento does too, at a little after 10p last night, the temp in SAC was just 74...of course, Modesto was still at 89! Modesto is just about 35 miles west of us here in the foothills...it was still 90 here at the same time:/

Margie...I keep forgetting to mention to you, we used a product called 'Odor-Mute' and it worked very well, too! I don't know if it's still on the market, that was back in the 70s and 80's...but it does work! I think we got it at the local feed store, Margie.

I read your story last night about Harry Potter...I'm tickled PINK you taught him to eat from a FORK:) Made me smile BIG, Margie! :)

Alright, Famblee...time's ticking here..coffee nearly finished...must accomplish some MAJOR 'stuff' here today! CYOLEL8R!

No new news on the federal front this morning - holding at 143 cosponsors in the House for HR 503 and 17 cs in the Senate for S 727. We are making significant progress - please keep contacting the target lists AND your own unsigned Rep/Sen(s) - lists coming right up in my next post.

Thanks Jonna for reminding us that we have until the end of 2010, NOT the end of 2009, to work with these bills. Not that we WANT to wait that long, only that we have that entire extra year to "gitter done" . . . A much better prospect than running out of time at the end of THIS year, as we did last year with HR 6598 . . . Of course we want slaughter to end YESTERDAY - but everything in DC seems to move with the speed of molasses . . . and I am glad to be reminded that we have that add'l year.

    JOE TOOOOZ-DAYE
    PARTO TWOOOO-OH
    ****************************************************

A newly arrived thoroughbred filly from the feed lot in Wilton. There is a racing tattoo which gives her age at 3. Horse killer Manny Phelps says the filly just raced at Stockton. And now she is 30 cents a pound. Incredibly hot, and the filly had been on a trailer for over two hours. The first thing she does is dive into a water bucket. As I bent down to remove her front leg wraps the filly dumped her water bucket all over my head and back. A prankster. Already I love this filly. Her new name is Mibbs.

Because on Sunday a teen girl appeared at our front gate. She gives me $200.00 in cash. The girl says use her money to help rescue a horse. Hopefully a filly or mare. And could we name the new filly or mare Mibbs? A nickname for her Grandma. The girl says Grandma Mibbs has been the most important person in her life. Grandma Mibbs reads Tbfriends. The girl wants Grandma Mibbs to know how much she loves her.

Exact words from the girl: I would be sleeping in the streets. I would be just another lost soul without my Grandma Mibbs.

Supper feeding last night. Mibbs the filly reached out with her face and almost got away with my baseball cap. Like I said, a prankster. A hoot to hang out with.

Enjoy your last day of June Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. No doubt about No Doubt on the radio...

    Joe

In 2006 there were 356 adoptions. Here are 4:

Top Left: Nicole adopts the pretty filly One Fourteen.

Top Right: Kerri loves Ink Spot like crazy, and does a daily blog about their life together.

Bottom Left: Casey goes home with the amazing gelding Winning Streak.

Bottom Right: Cali and Katie adopt Easy Bull, and what a hunk he is.

Quoting Mortimer Brewster ( Cary Grant ) in Arsenic and Old Lace - " insanity doesn't run in my family - it gallops ! "

That's how I feel about most of us, moi inclusive, in this battle against horse slaughter. When we finally win , we will need to start financing a " home " for most of us to enter. We'll have a staff to care for us , and basket weaving contests.

But if our horses are safe, wouldn't it be great?
We'll have Slewreigns Jerry there to run
Guess This Horse contests, which I would never win.

    ## Kay, I'm glad your shoulder is progressing and take care of it gently .

    ## Debbie L.A. , have " fun " doing all that moving work , but pleurisy is no joke , girl, so take care of yourself and do have a fun trip. It'll be cooler in the mtns.

Happy day to all, and bye now.

Here's Daniel's message and short list for today, Tuesday, June 30, from the HAHS group site. (snailmail addys omitted)

    Hi all,

Here is today's June 30th list of legislators to contact on the daily faxing campaign. Since it is Tuesday we will contact Senators on S. 727, requesting them to both cosponsor it and work actively to override any silent hold (denial of unanimious consent) placed on this bill. We will continue contacting them state by state in alphabetical order; notice we have skipped Iowa and Kansas for obvious reasons...

    Daniel

    HORSES ON THE HILL!

    note from CJ -

here is a link to a thread about Horses on the Hill that contains posts with hotlinks to the various links referred to in the following message.

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=38390.1

excerpt from message from Deb & Shelley, Anti Slaughter Issues: US - STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF JUNE 29

    HORSES ON THE HILL!

We strongly encourage everyone who is able, to attend this event. We'll keep you posted on any updates. Please let us know if you are going by sending us an email. If you are looking for t shirts, caps, etc, please visit http: // www. cafepress.com/AAHSmerchandise [close up spaces]

Please mark your calendar and join us in Washington, DC on July 14th to meet with your legislators and show your support for America’s horses and the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503/S. 727). The last Horses on the Hill was a huge success, let’s make this one even bigger and better!

As plans unfold for the daylong event you can start right now by signing up to attend. Please send an email to blair@awionline.org telling us if you plan on attending. Feel free to email if you have any questions.

    Then follow these steps:

Visit AWI’s Compassion Index to find your US Representative and two US Senators. Enter your zip code and hit go. [note - link in the above-noted thread]

Call their offices and ask to speak with their animal staffer, let them know you are a constituent. Schedule a meeting on July 14th between 10 am and 4 pm. You will be scheduling a total of three meetings (one in US House, two in US Senate). You can ask to meet with your legislator, as well, but meeting with the animal staffer is very beneficial. Questions about calling Capitol Hill? Click here. [note - link in the thread noted at top of this post]

After you set your meetings, come back to AWI’s Compassion Index and fill out the form with your meeting information. This will help us both coordinate your meetings and follow up after you leave. We will provide specific information (brochures, fact sheets, etc…) that will help in your meetings.

Send this email to everyone you know and ask them to join us in Washington, DC on July 14th for America’s horses.

Make your travel plans to join us on Capitol Hill. DC is a great summer destination. There are lots of things to do.

If you have any questions please email Blair at blair@awionline.org. We look forward to seeing you all on July 14th. Be sure to bookmark http: //www. horsesonthehill.org and check back often for updates and new information.

Still more to do for Barbaro's brothers and sisters - WE STILL NEED CONSTITUENT CONTACT - pls keep after your OWN Representative and Senators.

CURRENT AS OF Tuesday June 30

In addition to the current weekly AAHS strategy (week of June 29), which is posted here [close up spaces]

    http: // forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=38628.1

along with our House target list and links to daily HAHS 'short list' - and please work with those lists as a priority - when you have a leeeettle extra time/energy -

PLEASE KEEP CONTACTING YOUR OWN SENATORS AND REP (though this is not spelled out in the current AAHS directions). We are getting feedback that many legislators really only listen to their OWN constituents.

WOW! A filly! I love it!

    ####
Take care of yourself, Debbie. Let us know how you are doing.

Please say a prayer for our rescue horse Freckles. The kids think he may have foundered. Have a call in to the vet. He is pushing 40. There will be no heroics for him. If he is uncomfortable, we will say our good-byes. Stomach is in knots, can't stop crying. We've had him for 6-7 years. A true friend. Can't post any more right now.

I've set up a candle group him. Please keep him in your prayers.

Congratulations to Mrs. Jackson in particular, who we have read was really hoping for a filly!

And now that "Sissy-nor" (hilarious, by the way) is in utero, perhaps the lovely La Ville Rouge will retire from the broodmare business after this surely lovely foal is born...well, a girl (and even an old lady) can hope, can't she?

Posted by: Nancy Naughty Nutmegger at June 30, 2009 7:13 PM

Congratulations to La Ville Rouge, finally she'll have a filly! I'm wondering what name they'll choose. So far from in the foxhound picture we have Barbaro, Nicanor & Lentenor. The next one I believe is Margano which could work for a filly, might have to be Morgaine to make it feminine. Don't know if that sounds like a racehorse though! The other names in the foxhound painting are Sereno and Calypso. I could see Calypso but I bet there's already been a race horse with that name. One of the good things about having a filly is that she could carry on La Ville Rouge's lineage. We're gonna have to wait patiently for another nine mos. or so! Ah, well, all good things come in due time! No rush.

From the discussion board - hilarious:

    If horses were software.....
    A letter to tech support

    Dear Tech Support,

Recently I purchased and installed Horse 1.0. I soon noticed that this program appears to have numerous glitches. For instance, every time my computer boots up, I have to run Feed 5.3 and Water 7.1. Many times I've been in the middle of writing an important document, and a window will flash telling me to run Clean Stall 2.0. This program also contained applications I did not wish to install, such as Manure 8.5, however they auto-installed with Horse 1.0. Applications such as Vacation 2.7 and Free Time 10.1 can no longer run, crashing whenever selected. Possibly the worst is that Horse 1.0 has attached itself to programs like Finance Manager and MS Money, with folders added such as "Monthly Shoeing" and "Winter Blanket". Periodically, I'll get a reminder telling me to send a check to the manufacturer of Horse 1.0 for the aforementioned items. I have tried to uninstall Horse 1.0 numerous times, but when I try to run the uninstall program, I get warning messages telling me that a deadly virus known as "Withdrawal" will infect my system. Please Help!!!!!

    THE REPLY:

    Dear User,

Your complaint is not unusual. A common misconception among users is that Horse 1.0 is a mere "utilities and entertainment program." It is not - it is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its' creator to run everything! A warning will soon be imprinted on the box. Since you have already installed Horse 1.0, here are a few tips on how to make it run better. If you are annoyed by the applications Feed 5.3 and Water 7.1, you may run C: \HIRE HELP, however this will cause another folder to be added to financial applications, labeled "Staff". Failure to send payment to "Staff" will result in Feed 5.3 and Water 7.1 being run again on startup. A note of caution: NOT booting up your computer for several days isn't the solution to avoiding Feed 5.3 and Water 7.1. You will find that, when you boot up your computer again, a nasty virus called "Colic 4.2" will have attached itself to important documents and the only way to rid your computer of Colic 4.2 is by purchasing and installing "Vet 10.1", which we admit is extremely expensive, but crucial. Otherwise, Colic 4.2 will cause irreversible damage to the operating system. Finally, it is important that you run C:\Carrots and C:\Scratch Ears on a fairly regular basis to keep the application running smoothly. If you have any more questions, please call our toll free number.

    Sincerely, Tech Support

    # Bonnie,

I bet they will combine a name with Calypso. On the DB people are suggesting Calypso Bay, but it could be something else.

    Hi Everyone,
We are out of the barn, it took us one week. All the horses are safe or adopted. It was sad and tough, but better things will happen for us. We are all exhausted.

I will try to come back later, off to see the most handsome Hans.

A filly for Laville Rouge finally. The Jackson's must be doing a big dance. God Bles them All.

Hi Barbaro, I love you big bay.

Just talked to Barb AZ, she is in tears and very upset. Right now it's a wait and see, but she said she has a bad feeling about it.
Please say a prayer for her rescue horse Freckles.
Calls are in to her vet and her farrier.

Thank you for your calls, candles and prayers. Vet called, but we lost our connection. She is probably out of range. The Phoenix metropolitan area is huge, especially if she is out on a call somewhere in the middle of the desert! Waiting for her to call back. Farrier usually calls in the evenings, after he is done. More later. Scared to death right now.

Keeping all of you in prayer for a quick and merciful solution to Freckles' foundering. God, I have a stomach ache FOR you...

40 years old : what a wonderful old gentelman....how wonderful that he has had years with all of you. Remember: imho--horses/dogs: they live in the moment. No matter what his past lives cost him...he has been loved by you and your girls, and for him, that has been realtity.

    xxoo: many hugs and stuff....j

    Barb AZ,
I am lighting candles and praying for the best outcome for all of you. 40 years and at least those with you and your famblee were happy - with good
    food and good attention.

Jonna said they live in the moment for their reality and I guess they do,
and he has known happiness w/ you. God bless,
    bye now.

Thanks you gals. Shoer is coming out in the morning. Will get some more Banamine from the vet, if she calls back. Shoer is convinced it is heat founder, so he will get some pads on ASAP. Will keep you all posted. Honestly, it is almost a 911 call when one of the horses has a problem!

I appreciate your continued prayers for Freckles, and I will try to keep you all posted.

    Thanks, Famblee!

###Since the tests for the new "nor" are not definitive, and the results are that it is "probably" a filly, should we not think of "The Pending" as "Neither-nor" until we hear for certain?

Freckles update for the west wing, or anybody still awake: We managed to ice his feet down a couple of times. He is on Banamine and Bute. The shoer will be out in the morning. Freckles actually seems to be a little tiny bit better. The meds and ice must surely be helping. I will post again after the shoer has left. Will be afternoon for those of you in the east. Thanks for all your prayers.

Barb, I'm so glad to hear the good news. I'll continue to pray for both you and Freckles.

Hey, BARB, still awake over here in the East Wing, thought I'd peek in to see if any news . . . .
Prayers and positive healing energies continue in your direction.
Plus many many ((hugs)) to you and you give Freckles a kiss on his nose for me, too, please.
    WE BELIEVE, Barb!
    much love, Lou Ann

Thanks, Eliz and Lou Ann. Amazing what we go through. I wish the people who send horses to slaughter could understand that.
