    Barbaro Updates: 867

    updates are now here.

Update 5107: NYRA update from Belmont Stakes media lunch:

BOREL WOWS MEDIA AT LUNCHEON, GUARANTEES VICTORY AGAIN

NEW YORK - On his first day in Manhattan, jockey Calvin Borel didn't back off his bold guarantee that Mine That Bird would win Saturday's 141st running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes.

"He'll win," Borel said before a packed house during a Belmont Stakes media luncheon at Madison Square Garden. "That's what we're here for."

The Kentucky Derby winning gelding, expected to be a solid favorite over nine other three-year-olds in the Belmont, will be reunited with Borel in the 1 1/2 mile race, setting up the possibility of Borel becoming the first jockey to sweep the Triple Crown races aboard different horses. The 42-year-old Cajun took off Mine That Bird after the Derby to ride filly Rachel Alexandra to victory in the Preakness, then got back aboard the gelding when the filly's owners decided not to run her in the Belmont.

"I'll let him run his race like I did in the Derby," said Borel. "He has an unbelievable turn of foot. He reminds me so much of Street Sense when you set him down. That's why I like the little horse."

Borel said the mile-and-a-half of the Belmont Stakes, the longest of the Triple Crown races, would not faze Mine That Bird, and added he was more familiar with the sweeping oval of America's largest racetrack than most people realize.

"I've ridden there a lot of times," he said, adding with a smile: "It's like any track -- you just turn left."

Borel said it was the way Mine That Bird worked on Monday at Churchill Downs that gave him so much confidence.

"He worked the same was as he did before the Derby," said Borel. "He did super good yesterday morning. He can go all day long.

"I see a Derby race, same style," he added. "He sits back there. Belmont has a long stretch and I can sit and wait. I watch this horse every day, he goes two miles, two-and-a-half miles."

Tuesday's media luncheon was part of a whirlwind of activities in which Borel is participating during Belmont Stakes week. Having already taped a segment that will air Friday evening on the "Late Show with David Letterman," Borel will also make several appearances on national television, and visit Wall Street on Thursday morning to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

As for his own personal "triple," Borel said he wasn't really thinking about it.

"It would be awesome, but it won't sink in until afterward," said Borel. "I'm just going out there to win the race. I want to win it for (trainer) Chip (Woolley) because I owe that to him for giving me the opportunity to ride the horse back. This is a dream, and I'm just riding it right now."

Earlier at the luncheon, jockey John Velazquez, the 2007 Belmont winner aboard Rags to Riches who will be aboard Dunkirk on Saturday, addressed fellow riders Rajiv Maragh, who will ride Brave Victory, and Alan Garcia, aboard Charitable Man, and offered some advice.

"Stay on the rail," said Velazquez, referring to Borel's style of riding, typified by his rail-hugging run from last-to-first in the Derby.

Woolley, who arrived in town from Louisville just before the luncheon, was still on crutches from the broken leg he suffered in a motorcycle crash weeks before the Derby but did not let that dampen his enthusiasm for the way the gelding is training up to Saturday's race. Indeed, the Kentucky Derby Museum has reportedly asked for Woolley's crutches to display after he has finished with them.

"Mine That Bird had a super work," said Woolley. "Calvin started him off soft. He finished strong down the lane. He galloped out super."

Mine That Bird is expected to arrive at Belmont Park midafternoon on Wednesday after flying in from Kentucky along with Mr. Hot Stuff. Expected to pass the entry box as well on Wednesday are Chocolate Candy, Flying Private, Luv Gov, Miner's Escape and Summer Bird.

Also attending the luncheon were Mine That Bird's owners, Mark Allen and Dr. Leonard Blach.
"We've been here a few days now, and we're looking forward to the race," said Allen. "He's ready to go."

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who will send out Charitable Man, said he respects the Derby winner but wasn't about to concede the Belmont, ticking off a litany of reasons his colt is a threat.

"He's 2-for-2 at Belmont, 3-for-3 on the dirt, his sire won the Belmont (Lemon Drop Kid in 1999), he's a fresh horse, he's training great," he said. "Should I go on?"

McLaughlin, who saddled Jazil to victory in the 2006 Belmont, earlier got a laugh from some of the attendees before a shuttle bus departed Belmont for Manhattan. The trainer climbed aboard and told everybody they might as well go home, since Borel had already predicted the outcome of the race.

Velazquez said he was looking forward to riding Dunkirk for the first time for Todd Pletcher, the trainer for whom he usually rides.

"I worked him last week for the first time. He worked really well and galloped out great," said Velazquez. "A mile-and-a-half seems to suit Mine That Bird better than anyone but we still have to go a mile-and-a-half and see what happens."

Update 5106: From OLEX today (report forthcoming), horses wait to be shipped out.

Update 5105: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

Belmont week is upon us - while we know we won't see a Rachel Alexandra-Mine That Bird showdown on Saturday (although I hope that happens in the Travers), we will have a fantastic day of racing ahead of us. Belmont day is one of my favorite days of racing all year, largely because of the fantastic undercard it features, and this year is no exception.

The True North should be interesting, with Fabulous Strike and Kodiak Kowboy taking on Disco's Son and Per Incanto. It definitely has the makings of an interesting betting race.

I'll wait to see the final entries for the Just a Game, but I like Forever Together; I may also go for my Belmont fallback position of 'Alan Garcia's horse' which seems to pay off not infrequently.

The year's Acorn is a little lacking in star power (and out of all the races on Belmont day, it has probably had the most storied list of winners: Gallorette, Shuvee, Susan's Girl, Chris Evert, Ruffian et al.) but Justwhistledixie will likely be the favorite, with Just Jenda and Doremifasollatido getting some action as well.

Perhaps the toughest race on the card will be the Woody Stephens - Like Jessica, I'm not sure what to make of Hello Broadway at this point, but Hull is very interesting and I'm intrigued to see Regal Ransom as a possible starter. This Ones For Phil should like the distance.

In the Manhattan Handicap, 10-year-old Better Talk Now will be making his 50th start and it will have one of the most interesting lineups on the card - Court Vision and Cowboy Cal have both come into their own since moving to the turf, and Grand Couturier and Gio Ponti are always dangerous. While I don't think this will be Better Talk Now's year to grab a second victory in the race, Brass Hat's recent resurgence demonstrates that it's a bad idea to discount the old guys out of hand.

And as for the big race - well, you'll have to check back tomorrow (and the rest of the week) for that. But I'm certainly hoping to see Calvin Borel win his own personal Triple Crown on Mine That Bird - he's going to be a busy man this week, what with ringing The Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday and making various media appearances around town.

I'll just be happy to be back on my old stomping grounds - a real bagel before heading to the track and a Nathan's Famous hot dog with (hopefully) a Brooklyn Lager will be in order once I arrive...

Update 5104: Off to OLEX from where I will be providing short updates on Twitter.

Update 5103: My latest contribution to The Rail: Working to Retire the War Horses.

I ended up riding two horses this morning for Steve at Woodbine. And it was a nice quiet start to the day!

Update 5102: ABR Weekly Facebook e-mail: E-mail 27: Rachel Alexandra, Mine That Bird, Paragallo, Queen's Plate, Pay Attention, Rene Douglas, Natasha Sihota, OLEX.

Nearly a day off. I am just going in to get on one horse. I will then head off to OLEX a little later.

    And please keep calling.

Hiya, FsOB! Why am I already exhausted and this is just Tuesday? May today bring a better day for us all. May all of you have a safe & productive Tuesday. Wishing the same for all horses and their riders. Can I be first today? Hmm, let's see!

    #### To Lou Ann: Sorry that you had a bad day yesterday. May Angel Dee bring some rainbows your way today!

Hoping for a good day for all.

Hay Robyn and Janice and all other bleary eyed FoBs:
Ah, the Early Morning Crew...I got the hounds to let me "sleep" in a little...this means letting half of them out at 4:30 a.m., give a slice of bread to two of them--crated mind you--with iffy stomachs, listen to Loretta trying to figure out how to break into Jessie's crate to purloin the piece of bread. Listening to Jessie giving Loretta her best growling translated as:

I AM AN IRISH LURCHER AND I WILL EAT YOUR FACE WHEN I GET OUT OF HERE LATER. AND DO NOT FORGET THAT I FLEW ON A JET ACROSS THAT BIG BLUE PUDDLE; WHAT'D YOU DO, ALREADY?

Then trying to pretend to be asleep while at least four of the hounds carefully stare at my face for new signs of consciousness.

Oy so I give it up. And get up and do the coffee and step one of the food...meanwhile working as quietly as possible so my dotty old man greyhound will not begin his every minute on the minute hooting which I believe is meant to ENCOURAGE progress in the kitchen.

I have no idea what the gray, cloudy, slightly rainy Tuesday will bring. But I know that working to help the Congress get a set of brains will be among the things I do. All this because of the big, bay colt.

Long may he wave, Barbaro;;;in our memories of his "sublime" performance that KD day that seems so long ago.

This horse brought a whole new famblee to me, a whole new way to look at the world...things to plan and think about while I am ditzily (new word) stirring dog food and sipping coffee.

We are all there in one way or another. We are the Barbaro Nation..And another day to get it right begins. Love to all the rescuers. And to horses standing in feedlots. And the rest we all know.

Please keep calling. Keep faxing. Keep emailing.
Everything we do is watched. And draws attention to this amazing group of people who cannot be bought. Ever. We will do this. We will do this in 2009.

    Amen...Jonna....

Congress needs to pass our bill...and now...I do not know why they just take a day a week...to do things like passing our bill, protecting wildlife, etc.....one day....of their precious time...WOULD SAVE MILLIONS.

and...I think spade and neutering...should be mandatory...unless a special license of some kind.

and breeding of horses....should be very, very selective....overpopulation, abuse, neglect...all of this has to be addressed and stopped.

and...we should figure ways...and there are many, many intelligent people on here....figure central places...for pasture, feed, hay, to help individuals during these hard economic times...

and...maybe special places to temporary keep a horse or animal....til that family gets back on their feet, etc.

    PLEASE CALL, FAX, EMAIL....

    and Good Morning Alex.

Love and comfort to Sherry and her family. Love and comfort to all who the Brennans. To all who mourn or who are caring for animals who are ill.

Love again to MHR in the loss of their first rescue, blind Shiloh. God slipped her away in her sleep, apparently. And as you all know, Rob found her companion, also blind General, standing quietly over his fren.

Finding General a new fren is a delicate matter, once which will keep the ranch busy as it goes about the everyday tasks that will keep Rob and Steph sane while their hearts think about beginning to mend.

As I tell my family, if it were not for the greyhounds, well, thee are some days I'd just sleep through. But they keep me going.

Have a Disney Day, everyone: as my family used to say following a wonderful trip to D-World many years ago and always remember (from our visit to one of the very first Disney rides:)

Please remain seated until your Dumbo comes to a complete stop.

So very Zen, is it not????

June 2 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

All our experiences refine us--and sometimes they try us to the bone. But when we've made it through a trying experience, we know that the next time we will know what to do.

The old way of breaking and training a horse was to get on it and ride until it quit trying to throw the rider. Thank goodness there are new ways now to gentle a horse, but many of us act like a horse being broken the old way. We buck and snort until we throw the rider, and even then we're still wild and poorly adjusted. Most of us don't like being refined. We want to do it our way--and we pay the consequences for that. It's important, though, to remember how strong we are when we learn--and how weak when we react. Our challenge is to be open to learning throughout our lives, knowing that what we learn will help us with whatever we encounter in the future.

Press on with all your might in promoting the good work we are engaged in.

OY - I did not know until reading Jonna's post, about the loss of Shiloh at MHR - in tears again, but for the living - especially General - those who have been here from the beginning will remember that it was General, an (Appendix) TB blinded by a brute wielding a two-by-four, who first drew the interest of the FOBs to MHR - way back when ABR was TWR - Glad to hear Shiloh apparently slipped away peacefully, though. Way to go!

###Methinks our "servants in Washington DC" do not care about saving millions (or even $24,000) of our poor beleaguered taxpayers' money. Cannot wait for midterm elections in just about 18 months and am fervently praying that only legitimately registered and LIVING voters will cast ONE ballot apiece--and we will see some new faces representing us.

I'm sick of this "I'm a senator, I get a six-year term because I have to make the hard decisions, and the 94 percent of you who told me to vote 'no' on the bailout just do not understand" attitude, which our VERY senior senator DiFi said last fall as she proudly cast her vote in favor of the first of the massive dollars to be poured into the latest rathole.

    Arrogant you-know-what.

###She puts her name on the bills, but after her name is on the paper, wanders around getting money for her already obscenely wealthy husband's companies. Can we say "corruption"? And is anything done about it? No. More arrogance from those who are supposed to be watching out for that sort of thing.

We need more watchdogs on these arrogant people, and more grassroots activists proud to be on the Office of Homeland Security's watch list.

###I'm on dawn patrol here, too--My rescue horse has hives (a minor breakout, according to what the vet's gal told me yesterday as I picked up three packets of Azium powder). I have two "redheads" and both are sensitive to whatever-it-is that causes the hives. Could be food, something blooming, or a bug bite. So far my other horse is hive-free, but I keep Azium on hand just in case. It's a steroid and some horses cannot use it (mares in foal or lactating and any horse that has foundered or is prone to it).

    ###It's always something, huh?

###Have a good day, everyone. Onward. Already thinking positive thoughts for Saturday's race. Safe travel to all--today and every day.

Reasons To Be Cheerful, part 17 -

I let out a WHOOP when I went to check at thomas.gov just now. Though we are still holding at 128 cosponsors for HR 503 in the House, for the first time since April 21, when Sen Ronald Burris (IL) and Sen Edward M. Kennedy [MA] signed up - WE HAVE A NEW COSPONSOR IN THE SENATE! Our latest Senate ally - raising the grand total of Senate cosponsors to 17:

Sen Begich, Mark [AK] - 6/1/2009

(I've never heard the name before, have you? - wonder if he's new? need to check . . . just checked - he is a newbie, having beaten Ted Stevens for that seat in Nov. 2008, before Stevens' federal conviction was overturned - Begich had been Mayor of Anchorage.)

Congrats to all, especially our Alaska group.

In addition to the weekly AAHS strategy, which I'll (re)post here shortly along with our House target list and the daily HAHS 'short list' - and please work with those lists as a priority - but when you have a little extra time/energy -

PLEASE KEEP CONTACTING YOUR OWN SENATORS AND REP (though this is not spelled out in the current AAHS directions). We are getting feedback indicating that many legislators really pay the most attention to input from their OWN constituents.

For your convenience, here are the current cosponsors lists for both House and Senate AND a link to find out who your own legislators are and how to contact them.

COSPONSORS OF THE FEDERAL ANTI HORSE SLAUGHTER LEGISLATION - current as of Tuesday, 6/02/09

EVERYONE - pls check the following lists of current cosponsors of HR 503 & S 727 - if your Rep/Sen(s) are on these lists, you can breathe a sigh of relief and go on to our current federal target lists.

If your Rep/Sen(s) are NOT on the following lists of cosponsors, AFTER finishing the AAHS strategy, pls contact him/her seeking cosponsorship of HR 503 (House) and S 727 (Senate).

    You can use this link

Just to let everyone know- I am fostering one of the first horses to enter Fairmount parks program for retired horses. He was donated by his trainer, his name is Dawns Champ and although he is nervous about his new surroundings, I think he is going to love his retirement and hopefully soon he will find a forever home. Until then, he gets to spend time at my house, hang out with a couple of other horses and eat grass all day. When I turn him out every morning now he does his race horse dance like he is going to the post. So glad to be able to help this program get going and if anyone else in the S. IL or MO area can foster, they sure could use them. Jen

Here is Daniel's post of today's (6/02/09) HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter) list from their Yahoo group site - crossposting from post 9 of the ABR/DB Thread, in the antislaughter - US folder - DAILY FAXING CAMPAIGN RESTARTING(omitting snailmail addys that are posted at that DB post)

    Hi all,

Here is today's June 2nd list of legislators to contact on the daily faxing campaign. Since today is Tuesday we will switch to contact Senators, specifically the members of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, requesting them to both cosponsor S. 727 and work actively, supporting any motion or introducing it, to override any hold (denial to unanimous consent) placed on this bill.

Please note that Senators Coburn and Cornyn have been omitted since they belong to the hardcore pro horse killing lobby.

    Daniel

RIGHT ON! SISTER JONNA....this is war, this is a battle that has to be won....

My heart is so heavy with so many horses being butchered ALIVE...and our Congress sits filing their nails.

Posted by: joan roya at June 2, 2009 4:38 PM

CJ and the rest: I cannot fax...so i will call the judiciary committee later in the day when this stomach ache allows me to sit up straight. OY

Putting and end to HS is tough on your health, that is for sure. I finished up calling all my House Reps and will make my secret squirrel report for two days of calling to stephanie B (I think) later also.

    And just for grins:

    1. Does anyone really know how many co-sponsors we must actually have to get HR503 on the floor for a vote?

    2. Can anyone show me in our CONSTITUTION where the act of attaining a certain number of co-sponsors allows legislation to go forward is listed? (yeah--everyone rolls on the floor laughing.)

Remember: this is a Marathon, not a Sprint.

Someone said this to me about her cancer treatment. And it do believe it applies to our campaign to kill horse slaughter in No. America as well.

Please keep marching. We can do this. This year.

one more comment re the AAHS & HAHS lists - while we know that the targets on our (long) list were cosponsors of HR 6598 in the last (110th) Congress, Daniel has indicated that all are horsefriendly, but not showing prior cosponsorship of HS ban legislation. SO - for your consideration (and hopefully, assistance) in working the HAHS lists, I will be adding just a few words re the prior horsefriendliness of the legislators on Daniel's daily short lists.

Of the 4 Senators from that list posted above, two - Durbin and Feinstein - were cosponsors of S 311 last year. While the other two - were not, I believe that they both supported other anti HS legislation in the past - the Ensign-Byrd Amendment that defunded the US slaughterhouses.

HOPE THAT HELPS! Use those backgrounds when contacting their offices.

JONNA AND EVERYONE - feel free to send your feedback to Steph B as a cc - BUT -

pls note that our official AAHS Strategy directions from Deb and Shelley request that you send that to YRS TRULY - potluckysbcglobal.net - we are involved in a comprehensive project that will shape our future strategy and in that project all the feedback from all of you must come to me. THANKS (AND I'M GLAD YOU ASKED!)

As for queries how many cosponsors can sit on the head of a pin (hahahaha, I crack myself up) - I mean, how many needed for a vote -

There is no magic number. Generally, any bill's sponsor(s) want their bill to pass, so they will not seek a vote UNTIL they are as sure as they can possibly be about the amount of support they have in either chamber. Apparently numbers of cosponsors are somewhat of an indicator re support. Please anybody with more expertise, please jump in and answer Jonna's queries re cosponsors. THANKS!

    Morning, ABR Famblee...

Took a look at www.baltimoresun.com this morning...it IS still just morning, here in the westwing..discovered an article about Phoenix/Mercy...wanted to let you know, because of the nature of the crime committed against her...the reward has grown from $1K to $6K and apparently still 'counting' by this morning! Does MY heart good:/

I looked in at their Blog via the Sun..called "UNLEASHED" and noticed comments left by others, requesting if we might know of other blogs which hold animals and their rights in the 'forefront'..to please post the information...quite NATURALLY, I thought of ABR!!:)

Here's the link where you can make a donation, if you want to and are able...just indicate "Phoenix Reward Fund" in the Pay Pal area they have for 'special notes/instructions.' There is also a mailing address available there.

BARCS...'Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care' and here is the link...so sorry, I can't 'blue ink link'..but if you copy/paste, I believe it will come up 'blue' for your cyber travel...

Hope everyone is having a good day...I know where our ALEX is...and I just gotta say....I don't know how he does it...but God Love Him!!

The reward fund for Phoenix has risen to $8500. Per this blog linked via the link posted by Lynne Brown,

    http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/features/mutts/blog/2009/06/reward_for_phoenix_burning_inf.html

and I wanted to post this info here -

Reward for Phoenix burning info now $8,500

The reward fund for information leading to an arrest in the case of Phoenix, the pit bull puppy set on fire in Baltimore last week is growing exponentially.

Officials now report the amount has reached $8,500.

    BARCS has collected $5,000.

    Animal Control has collected $1,000.

And the Humane Society of the United States is offering $2,500.

Just hours ago, the reward fund was at $6,000.

"This poor dog suffered a painful and needless death and we want accountability for this vicious act of animal cruelty," Chynoweth, senior director of HSUS’ Animal Cruelty and Fighting campaign said in a statement.

Baltimore City Animal Control is investigating. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Baltimore City Animal Control at 410-396-4688.

Phoenix, a one-year-old pit bull puppy was doused with gasoline and set on fire in Southwest Baltimore last Wednesday. The dog was euthanized on Sunday.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd . . . as you know you take me to where angels walk!
As our Angel Dee says "It is AFFIRMED!"

Holding hands, paws, and hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation!

Wish there was some way this could be done with and for the horses with the proceeds to benefit the many horse rescues . . . .
Just saw this in one of the garden publications I receive --

A new product called "COW POTS", "an earth-friendly alternative to plastic and peat pots"
"CowPots, manure-fiber based seed starter pots, are made by American farmers for plant lovers everywhere! These earth-friendly, 'pots you plant' are made with biodegradable, 100% renewable composted cow manure."
These are for use in starting plants and since our country is to be going greener this is a great alternative to plastic.
"Made with 100% Renewable Composted Cow Manure"

"CowPots" distributed by The Liquid Fence Company
    www.CowPots.com

Both sets of my late grandparents were known to always keep an eye out for passing horse driven buggies in the streets because they tremendously valued the "garden treasures" left by the horses and always scurried to collect those "treasures" for their gardens!

So I think it is very possible, and wouldn't it be grand if the proceeds could go to our many equine rescues!!

Just thinking . . . ., but had to share!!

Prayers continue for all in need!
    Love to all,
    always, Lou Ann

    Hi Gang.

A windy, wet, and cold night here in the sunny southwest!? Tom is on the futon, snoring. Monkey is filling the air with her aromatic, lingering for way too long, gassiness. And Lucky won't go out for a wee in this weather. But it is peaceful, and they are safe. What we wish for them all.

I never read magazines. The expense and lack of time. I was in WalMart today, waiting in line, and I picked up 'O Magazine' and just put it into my pile. Didn't look at the cover much. Turns out this June issue is full of wonderful stories about different fur children. It was worth the $4.05. You can view it at oprah.com/omagextras. Scroll down. There are videos as well.

    It really helped me today.

Have a good evening, beloved Famblee.

HEY YOU GUYS - there's a need for assistance in getting 2 boys gelded, by SOH (Save Our Horses) in Canada. Not a lot is needed, but with all else that has been going on there has been very little FOB support for this project. Hoging to change that . . .

    Here's the thread -

Horse Rescue Issues - Help with Gelding Funds -SOH

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=37500.1

and after I asked Jana how far was SOH from Woodbine, she responded (post 59 of that thread)that she and other FOBs met Alex at Woodbine; that Alex has visited SOH and they have attended OLEX together - and she posted a photo depicting Alex aboard one of her horses last year. SOH is about 15 minutes from OLEX . . .

if you get a chance pls check that thread and consider a small donation for gelding 2 sweet boys. THANKS!

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, I am truly running on empty if I left Janice in FLA and Jonna in NY's names off the list of those of us on the "ABR AM Shift". A great big mea culpa to you both. Now I get to go back upstairs and do more "work-work" (as opposed to "housework"!).

May we all enjoy "ACN" and rise to seize the new day. Peace, RMH

    #### To Kay, interesting to read that your red-headed rescue horse has sensitive skin. My beloved copper-coloured Siberian Husky rescue has very sensitive skin, too!
To Jen: Congrats on "Dawn's Champ" joining your life.
To Lou Ann: The title "cow pots" must be a pun. Are you familiar with the term "cow pats" England?
Hello to Bobbie B: Great seeing you here today.
To Margie in NM: What a riot to read about Monkey's contribution to methane production in AZ, ha! ha! What a lucky dog she is to have joined your home. ####

Mixed Results on Slaughter Bills as State Legislatures Adjourn
    by: Pat Raia
    June 02 2009, Article # 14283

The sponsor of Tennessee legislation promoting horse processing plant development in that state is not giving up on the bill, although it's now stalled in the state's Senate Commerce Committee.

Sponsored by Rep. Frank Niceley, HB 1428 would allow private investors to develop a horse slaughter plant in the state. It would also insulate prospective developers from legal challenges that state courts deem without merit. The bill passed the Tennessee House Agriculture Committee, but the Senate Commerce Committee adjourned before considering it.

The bill will remain in the committee until the legislature reconvenes in January 2010.

"We're just going to let it lay there until the next session," Niceley said. "We don't have to start over."

Another piece of legislation sponsored by Niceley, HJR 245 also remains in the Tennessee Senate's Finance Committee. This resolution instructs Tennessee's congressional delegation to oppose the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, which would ban the export of horses for slaughter.

The Tennessee bills were among several similar measures introduced in state legislatures across the country with mixed results.

A Montana bill allowing horse processing plant development became law in May. A North Dakota measure authorizing a processing plant feasibility study in that state goes into effect in July.

Meanwhile, an effort to repeal Illinois' ban on horse slaughter failed.

Resolutions opposing the Conyers-Burton federal legislation also failed in Idaho and Minnesota.

However, similar resolutions passed in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. An Arizona resolution is pending.

    #### Lou Ann - so glad you enjoyed the glimpse into MHR!

ex post facto Cherokee Devotionals - as I posted on Monday, I missed Harriette's emails over the weekend because I was offline under the weather - then was swamped and didn't find them until just now. Although they are post-dated, that doesn't really matter, does it, because the content of these little gems is always timeless.

May 30 & 31 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

    May 30

The past is ripe with wisdom and knowledge because it brings to the heart the reasons for many things we did not understand then. Search among the memories for the sharp stones that hurt so much you covered them as in a grave. Shame whispered to hide them--but wisdom would have said to use them for good.

One day you will say that it used to matter but it no longer rules. You can free yourself by taking old humiliations and using them like keys to open your own treasure boxes. And then you will love in a whole different and more wonderful way.

The red man must leave the land of his youth and find a new home.

    May 31 Cherokee Devotional

Prepare yourself for what you need. If deep rest does not come naturally, give yourself reason to relax. Speak quietly and firmly to yourself of peace and release from stressful times. Comfort yourself with love the way you would comfort your child.

There is a power for peace, but it is not yours until you have recognized its Source. It is not an artificial substance, but a marvelous gift of a spiritual nature--and it is yours if you ask. Prepare yourself. It is the first step toward all good things.
