    Barbaro Updates: 863

    updates are now here.

Update 5076: Off to the races tonight at Woodbine. We have a couple of runners, so lets hope for a little luck!

Update 5075: My OLEX report from yesterday's visit is included in this link: OLEX May 27th 2009.

Update 5074: In lieu of going to Woodbine this morning, I headed out to the slaughter house in Ontario. This was my fourth trip to the slaughter house, and I have yet witnessed slaughter first hand. I chose to go today because there was a buyer at OLEX yesterday competing with the main kill buyer, and he bought 31 horses. It was suspected he was a kill buyer for the Ontario slaughter house. And it made sense. Buying kill horses, and able to pay a little more than the main kill buyer, who buys for a Quebec slaughter house. More travel, more expenses. Anyway, when I arrived at the slaughter house today a couple of guys were hanging around outside. I chatted with them. One guy I knew from my previous visits. I asked for the owner. He was not there. I reminded the one guy I knew I was asking about horses to be slaughtered and so forth. They were just cleaning up. I don't know if they clean up before "processing", or after ""processing". And I don't absolutely know if they are slaughtering horses, although it does seem the case.

Update 5073: A morning off from galloping at Woodbine!

    And please keep calling.

Hiya, FsOB! Argh, running late today. Is it possible that I shall be first today?

Alex, I enjoyed reading both of your blogs yesterday. As always, I learn so much about horses from your blogs. Please forgive me for asking what is probably a silly question and perhaps it is a difference in parlance on this side "of the pond". But can you explain what the "stiffles & hocks" might be to this non-horse educated nurse?

    #### A belated happy birthday to Kay & Verna. Vern sent me a note last night that her computer is broken and Internet connection is also down, unfortunately. But she sends all her good wishes! ####

Robyn, Here is a link with a a description of the anatomical parts of a horse. The stifle and hock are part of a horse's back leg.

    Good Wednesday morning everyone!!

Thanks for the link Wendy - I'm going to check it out too.

There's an old horseman's expression: No hock, no horse...

icky and wet here...you'd think it was Fall. Spring here is basically stupid. I went to college in Columbia, MO and the springs there were sobeautiful, and went on forever. And the Fall too: really, more of a looong Indian Summer.

In the Spring I always think I really ought to be back in COlumbia: sigh.

Fingers still not loaded with enough coffee...must make many calls today. We have to pass this bill into Federal LAw guys. Like NOW...

r u still out there. I think of your Jag often. Like so many of the beloved horses of FoBs, you loved him so well, and made him so alive and real to us...

Jag and the Scentless Bastard. And Jag twirling and leaping and rolling in the paddock in all weathers...especially in the snow. So breathtaking.

###Interesting observation on the Paulick Report a few days ago on the situation that led to Rene Douglas's terrible injury--riding in a race on a horse that is not "live" (no chance of winning) and making moves that put other, possibly more "viable" horses in jeopardy. Most of the time that sort of action has no consequences--the rider is more skilled, the hole is wider, whatever. But it happens a lot and is, on its face, dangerous.

Blood-Horse reports of another incident at Delaware Park. This time the jockeys were not seriously injured, though the jockey on Chanceofshowers, Gabriel Saez, will have a CAT scan today to make sure he is all right.

Chanceofshowers had to be euthanized, and a post mortem will be held to determine what exactly happened.

    RIP, Chanceofshowers. Sigh.

Posted by: KAY at May 27, 2009 1:30 PM

There have been a number of horses hurt or dead from accidents since just Saturday. The Delaware Park incident would be the 6th I have heard of.

    Good Morning Gang.

Weather report from here: raining for over a week. Snow on the Sangre de Christos. 43 degrees!!!!!! Will it never end?

Last week someone broke into the animal shelter here, cut the padlock on the kennel of Nessie, a black and white pit mix, one ear up, one ear down, and stole her away in the night. Earlier that day, people wanted to adopt her for "breeding purposes".(She was scheduled for spaying the next morning.)The story was plastered all over the newspaper on Thursday. A reward for her was offered. On Friday, a tip came in, and Nessie was rescued 35 miles away in Red River by shelter workers. Nessie, one ear up, one ear down, is now safe and spayed and waiting for her new home.

What mental defectives would go to a shelter and ask for a dog for breeding purposes????

If this is the mentality we deal with, it is no wonder that so many animals are at risk.

    OY, X one million!

May 27 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Our hurts heal themselves in little ways---sounds, scents, a word at the right time. These things are like music that can reach deep inside where material things cannot go.

We too often let the cares of the world steal our peace and we lie down in frustration instead of taking charge. But healing waits. It waits for the right moment when our defenses are down and it fills our mind with hope. Start out in faith and the help will come. The beginning is by choice--and the only thing we give up is the idea that nothing can work for us.

You don't understand our prayers. You didn't try to understand.

    FEDERAL ANTISLAUGHTER CAMPAIGN (AAHS)

(NEW) STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF 5/26

    crossposting from the DB

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=37557.1

    Dear Friends,

With the start of this week, we are implementing a variation to our strategy in an effort to gain swift support for H.R.503.

Below is our target list (past cosponsors of H.R.6598).

When calling each office, please ask for the LD (legislative Aide) who is handling H.R.503. When speaking with the LD, it is very important to gather feedback. Once you have feedback, please email that feedback to CJ (potlucky@sbcglobal.net)

We are currently at 128 cosponsors. Great job everyone!!

[note from CJ - target list is in my next post]

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - You can use this toll-free number 800-828-0498 and ask for a legislator by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of legislator's office phone).

Please Note: We have started a separate thread titled 'State Action Needed'. Several States have introduced their own legislation to allow horse slaughter. These states need our help, to keep this from happening. Please pass the word!!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE.....Let it be heard.

FEDERAL TARGET LIST - Week of May 26, 2009

(Note - The date shown after each Rep's name below, is the date he/she signed on to cosponsor former antiHS bill HR 6598 in the 110th Congress.)

Remember - as former cosponsors of anti-horse slaughter legislation, these Reps are already on our side and should be easy to approach. We are seeking for them to sign up to cosponsor HR 503.

AND - with our new strategy - we are looking for INPUT from these offices for you to email to me as per the directions in Deb & Shelley's post (copied in my last post).

Don't hesitate to email me - potlucky@sbcglobal.net - if you have questions about this new strategy.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - You can use this toll-free number 800-828-0498 and ask for a legislator by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of legislator's office phone)

###MargieinNM, you ask, "What mental defectives would go to a shelter and ask for a dog for breeding purposes????"

There are a lot of them, apparently. I went to one of our local shelters and found that the door to the dogs had a keypad and I had to be escorted back to the cages. Could not just walk back as in days past. Why? Because prior to this security measure, people were going back to the cages, cutting through the locks and passing the dogs to accomplices over the back gate.

I am assuming this action was to avoid paying the adoption fee, which was something like $50 or $75--and they probably zeroed in on young and "whole" members of certain breeds.

    ### KAY - an anonymous donor is outfitting the shelter with cameras. My confusion comes from people thinking that a shelter would be OK releasing a dog to someone interested in breeding purposes. The worry around here, and at the top of the 'risk' list, is dog fighting 'purposes'.

JOE of TB FRIENDS; JUST KEEPING ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW. HOW DOES HE KEEP HIS HEART FROM OVERFLOWING. I JUST PURELY LOVE THE SHELTONS.
    *****************************************************

Wednesday, May 27th... Some of this, some of that...

Our program Tbkids produced this e-mail from 12 year old Sergio, an actual male person. Sergio writes: I am so excited to meet Oscar Award. I have 6 pictures of Oscar on my walls, and 3 pictures on my dresser. Please tell Oscar I will see him on July 11th. I know we are suppose to be learning stuff. Will you get mad if I spend my whole time with Oscar?

    (already I adore this kid)

Six kids at a time, every other Saturday through August, are visiting us to hang out with horses. Since all slots are filled, we are having the remaining bunch of Tbkids come for a one on one experience with race horses. Give me a call at 530-383-2120 if you would like to be included. Each private session takes 90 minutes or so. A parent must stay with you while on our ranch. No drop offs. Parents swat flies, kids learn about thoroughbreds. A blast in the boonies...

Coming to us from Golden Gate Fields, a small gelding who is said to be sound and slow.

Coming to us from Hollywood Park, a small filly who is said to be injured. Thus, also slow.

Coming to us from a lesson barn out of business, an older thoroughbred gelding with navicular.

Coming to us from a private home, a neglected thoroughbred gelding. There is a racing tattoo which says he is 7.

Purchased from the feed lot in Wilton, a thoroughbred gelding in very good shape. There is a tattoo which says he is 9.

It was April when Trystyn of Vacaville adopted the dark gelding Copper Star. This e-mail came from Trystyn yesterday: On Sunday I had my first trail ride with Cop. He was awesome. A girl at my barn offered me a lot of money for Cop. This would be the most money I have ever had in my life. But I love him so much. I declined the offer. My non horsey friends think I am nuts. Cop is the horse of my dreams, and no way I am giving him up.

In 2006 Keri came to us and adopted the handsome gelding Ink. Keri loves Ink like crazy, and she writes a blog about their life together. You can read Keri at www.inkeg.com

There were dozens and dozens of letters yesterday expressing sadness over Lark. We very much appreciate your support.

We make horses our number one priority. There is a small ranch in the Sacramento area also having money problems. Their horses not in the best condition. Tbfriends has placed three of their horses into new homes. Two of their horses, both thoroughbreds, have come to us. Eight horses remain, and they are eating like royalty. Friends have taken hay and grain. If you would like one of the remaining horses, give me a call. But do not ask me where these horses are coming from, as you will get no reply. The ultimate rescue, sight unseen. We honor privacy, which is why we are always asked for help. Once again, horses our number one priority.

A big Thank You to Mark & Anne. Don & Gina. Cora for the delicious horse cookies. Kacie for the delicious human cookies. Alex for the Memorial Day cheesecake. Melissa for the beautiful drawing of our ranch. Your picture hangs on our fridge Melissa.

Enjoy your hot and dusty Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Doors on the oldies station...

I was hoping that we'd have everything wrapped up for Zee's Parr Dee Girl by now, but funds are still needed. SOS Equines in Kennewick, WA, is trying to help her.

If anyone would like to help get her safe, please go to:

    YOLE:

    Sorry for the posting idiocy.

Wednesday just seems to be a migraine magnet...raining and gross here. So very tired of the rain. Please God send it to those who actually NEED the RAIN>

    Please keep calling.

    Please do not despair.

Please help any rescue you want. Because they ALL need our help.

Please go to MHR and see the miracle of a now strong and healthy 12-year old PMU mare destined for the meat man. Now she is a mom for the 9th time. Her last pregnancy has produced 2-day old Justice. He will actually stay with her for a while, instead of being sold for meat, or his beautiful, soft skin. She is learning how to trust people. There is no earthly reason for this PMU mare to trust anything on two legs...

And yet. And yet: she had her first post-foaling exam yesterday, shots, and she even allowed her precious foal to be slightly removed from her and also examined. You can see her struggling to stay in her skin. Three 2-legged things in her pen. Touching her Baboo...she was nervous.

    And yet:
She trusted Rob and Steph and the result: a terrific report from the Vet who was gobsmacked by Faith's glowing good health and 375 pound weight gain, and with of course, His Excellence, already-drinking-out-of-the-water-tub; Justice.

Steph will find a forever home for this beautiful new life...and Faith? She will either stay at MHR or Steph will also find her the perfect place.

This is JUST ONE OF THE THINGS we are doing. Take heart. Mountains ARE moving. We are the Barbaro Nation. And we do not have time to wait. Change must come as fast as we can urge it forward.

I am not patient. I refuse to be patient. I will not get crazy, instead, I will--like Joe Shelton and his Cathy, put my head down and walk the straight and narrow path or Resolve. And Determination and a supreme Conviction that we are heading in the right direction.

    Just don't look down.
We can do this. All of it, eventually.
    YES WE CAN.

Jonna - thanks for thinking of Jag and me. I miss him a lot.

Right now my dog Palmer (12 yr old golden) is having a tough time. He fell (splayed out) this past weekend on my hardwood floors when he strayed off the runners I have all over my house for him. He's in bad shape but showing some slight improvement each day. I'm trying to remain hopeful. My entire neighborhood is behind his recovery too which is inspiring! Palmer knows more people than I do in this town!

Thankfully, 19 yr old Toby (my other horse) and 13 yr old Pita (my cat) are doing great!

Wendy, good thoughts and prayers for Palmer. The Goldens are such beautful dogs and their personality just is great. Hence, your neighborhood loves him. Keep us posted on him. Last week Chief fell backwards and hurt himself. He was was so sore he could hardly get around for a couple of days. Maybe Cooper is really sore. Margie in N.M.,

In my neck of the woods (northern CA) pit bulls are the dog of choice amongst drug dealers because of their ability to be or appear to be ferocious. So, money can be made by selling baby pit bulls. Thus another example of using an animal as a commodity rather than as a companion, something done all the time but for me and some other people it isn't very pretty.

Thanks everyone for your support of Palmer's recovery. Late this afternoon he seemed to be showing more of his normal personality. Such as... eating anything in sight, perking up for a "walk", had to bribe him with treats to turn around from our "walk" (we only went to the end of the short side of our block - I live on a corner), I gave him his favorite chew treat and he went straight to his favorite place to eat it - outside in my yard which required him to negotiate the stairs to the back door and going through the doggy door. So he's doing extraordinarily well tonight. Granted he's on pain killers but i love it when he got a little sassy with me. So much more himself. Maybe in a week he will be himself and I won't need my neighbors to help me get him in or out of my house.

And just so you know, it's been pouring rain ALL DAY LONG! Both Palmer and I are soaking wet. What a nut he is but he's so happy! That puts a huge smile on my face.

Hiya, FsOB! Can someone please blue-link the update re. Rene Douglas? I keep hoping for a miracle for him.

Wendy, I enjoyed seeing the anatomical drawing of a horse which you blue-linked this AM. How I wish that I could've taken an elective in equine anatomy when I was an undergrad (back in the Pleistocene Era!).

May ChanceofShowers rest in peace. I do hope that Gabriel Saez is safe and unharmed. Wishing all citizens of The Barbaro Nation "ACN". Peace, RMH

    #### To Nancy in CT: I received Yetta's mailing yesterday evening! How lovely, many thanks. Brent was very impressed and couldn't understand how/why I might have received the note with Mrs. Jackson's photo and her quote. My reply: "That's all because of our Nancy!"
To Jonna: Brent is whining non-stop about the frequent rainy, cool days which we've had this Spring. He was actually walking around the kitchen prior to dinner, wearing a hoodie with the hood over his head. I think he looks like a Greek monk whenever he does that, ha! Ha!
To Margie in NM: Thrilled that Nessie was safely located. How are Lucky and Monkey doing this week? Have you ever heard from the human Mum of the three Huskies since they returned to her home?
To Tamme: May your day be a better one tomorrow. It is always a treat to see you post here, Tamme.
To Jane: Please know that I am keeping you in my thoughts as you prepare for your neighbour's wake on Friday. Sue was lucky to have you as a friend & neighbour, Jane.

Douglas making progress after surgeryComment Email Print Share By Marcus Hersh
    Daily Racing Form

CHICAGO - Severely injured jockey Rene Douglas continues to make steady progress after undergoing seven-hour back and neck surgery following a one-horse spill Saturday at Arlington Park, but a long-term prognosis for Douglas's recovery still is murky.

Doreen Razo, wife of jockey Eddie Razo and close friends with Douglas's wife, Natalie, has been with Douglas every day since the accident, and said Douglas, 42, was alert and responsive, and no longer was under heavy sedation as of Wednesday morning. Doreen Razo said that Douglas still "doesn't have any sensation yet in his feet or his legs," but that does not signify permanent paralysis.

"They think it would start at his thigh level and then on down," Razo said. "When the accident first happened, he did have sensation in his foot. He's got muscle tones that are working, that if he was in more serious condition would not work. The spine is a mysterious thing. We just have to wait for the swelling and everything to come down, and it's just going to be day by day. They didn't expect anything significant in terms of movement for five to seven days. They weren't worried that he wasn't able to feel this or feel that. Nothing has been a step back. All the doctors come out of there with a smile on their face."

Douglas suffered broken bones in his neck, but his worst injury was compression of the T-5 and T-6 vertebrae lower on his spine. The T-6 vertebra was jammed into the spinal cord, which is why Douglas has suffered paralysis. Surgery early Sunday morning decompressed the vertebrae and then fused them. The area of trauma remains inflamed and swollen, and firm longer-term assessments won't be possible until Douglas heals for several days.

Razo said that doctors were trying to determine the best way to remove Douglas from a ventilator and detach the breathing tube that prevents him from speaking. Because Douglas has several broken ribs, he was put on a ventilator when he was under heavy sedation.

"It's a whole big process, and they want to do it the correct way so they don't have to put him back on it," Razo said Wednesday morning. "He's trying to communicate. He tries to write, but his hands are swollen from everything and he's in a neck brace. Last night, it was almost like a game of charades, with him trying to tell us things."

Douglas went down at the top of the homestretch in the Arlington Matron while riding the 4-year-old filly Born to Be. Racing just behind the leaders, Born to Be was bumped and pushed out when Sky Mom and jockey Jamie Theriot came off the fence and tried to go through a hole. Born to Be clipped heels with tiring pacesetter Boudoir and went down, rolling over onto Douglas, who was trapped under the horse until track personnel rolled Born to Be off the rider. Born to Be was euthanized because of serious injury.

Arlington stewards disqualified Sky Mom from fifth to last on Saturday, and held a hearing concerning the incident Sunday. Monday, they handed Theriot a 30-day suspension for jostling Born to Be and pushing her out, and on Wednesday, Theriot's agent, Fred Aime, filed an appeal of the suspension with the Illinois Racing Board. An evidentiary hearing will be scheduled once the appeal is processed, and after the hearing, the matter goes before the full racing board for a decision. The board, though it rarely does so, has the power to increase or decrease a penalty issued by stewards.

Theriot, reached by phone Wednesday, conceded that he had bumped Born to Be, but said he was appealing the length of the suspension. Theriot said he had been suspended shorter periods for similar infractions.

"Yes, my horse came out and brushed," Theriot said. "If I have seven days, fine, I'd have started serving it right away."

Theriot, 30, rode races on Sunday at Churchill, but said the incident was weighing heavily on his psyche.

"It bothers me to no end," Theriot said. "I never, ever thought being a rider I'd be involved in this. It's really tearing me apart, the condition he's in. It's going to change my life forever. It's going to change me as a rider, it's going to change me as a family man, it's going to change me as a normal person."

Doreen Razo said that a parade of Arlington-based jockeys had been to Douglas's room at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital intensive-care unit to visit. Douglas is scheduled to spend two weeks in the intensive care unit before being transferred to a Northwestern rehabilitation clinic, where he is expected to be housed for four to six weeks.

    ### Robyn - never heard from the owner or the 3 Huskies since they left. We all think of the boys every day, and miss them a lot. Monkey is doing great. Such a beautiful leetle girl. She finally barked on Monday. One, very quiet bark as someone came to the front door. Also, I had no idea Shar Peis have sweaty armpits. It was quite a surprise. They are so different than other dogs. I cut back on Lucky's furosemide. He is a lot better. Not as 'drained'. I check his abdomen for distention. I believe the dose he was getting was too much on his system. All is OK. And the car starts every day and the tires roll. Life is good.

I have 20 acres of land here for just myself and the dog babies. If I had the money I would turn this into a rescue for any childruns in need. I go to sleep at night dreaming of all that I could help.

Please, Lord, send bushels of money so we can help our kids. Amen.
