    Barbaro Updates: 862

    updates are now here.

Update 5072: My latest contribution to The Rail: More on What Makes a Good Exercise Rider.

Update 5071: My weekly contribution to Eclipse Magazine (UK): Alex Brown 26 May 2009.

Update 5070: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

The long holiday weekend we've just exited was a case study in the highs and lows of the sport. It's impossible not to be excited by victories like Zenyatta's in the Milady or old warhorse Brass Hat's in the Louisville; however, the sobering accident at Arlington involving Rene Douglas was the flip side of that otherwise-bright coin.

First, the good news; Zenyatta's delayed 5-year-old debut showed that the big mare has not lost any conditioning - she's still doing her own little dressage competition in the post parade and then dawdling at the back of the pack before blowing by the field. It seems that every race really is the same for the undefeated champ. As impressive and effortless as her acceleration is, it would be so much more interesting to see her hook up with a true peer. Despite some encouraging comments after the race that she could face some stiffer competition, it seem that she will rather be pointed toward (to put it in 'American Idol' parlance) safe places.

Like Dana, I'm hoping to see something a little more unexpected in the long run - more people deserve to know who Zenyatta is, but beating up on SoCal mares isn't the way to achieve wider recognition. A Breeders' Cup showdown with Rachel Alexandra could be great indeed, but it would be even better to see them meet up on neutral ground first. Certainly new owner Jess Jackson wasn't particularly interested in taking Rachel Alexandra to Santa Anita (given Curlin's lackluster effort on Pro-Ride) unless it meant a crack at Einstein, Well Armed and the other big boys. (And I must confess that if Rachel Alexandra were to pull a Zarkava and beat older males, I'd be forever in awe).

Speaking of Rachel Alexandra, there's still no word as to whether or not she will be Belmont-bound; given the way she is working it sounds as though she wants to go. Some have argued that in recent years a Belmont victory spells career doom, although I would argue that there's a world of difference between a horse like Rachel Alexandra and, say, Sarava or Da'Tara. Afleet Alex was likely injured in the Preakness yet won the Belmont anyway and Empire Maker was rushed off to stud after the Jim Dandy (although you could probably also make the 'rush to the breeding shed after minor injury' argument about Afleet Alex, Smarty Jones - even Rags to Riches). Jazil had the breeding, but he probably still falls into the 'freak longshot win' category. While it's true in recent years that Belmont winners have not, on the whole, done much beyond perhaps participating in the Travers, that seems to be due to a combination of two factors - early retirement when the horse is at its perceived peak financial value (these are, usually, stallions we are speaking about, after all) and fewer legitimate winners with distance pedigrees. Whether Rachel Alexandra goes or not, we can at least take heart that Mine That Bird won't be shipping directly from Belmont to a stud farm.

And thus back to my favorite hard-knocking gelding - Brass Hat finally proved that he can win on turf (with a little help from the seemingly ever-present Calvin Borel). Unlike many of the horses mentioned above who were spirited off to retirement with injuries that would have earned them a little rest and a subsequent return in the past, Brass Hat continues to demonstrate that it takes more than a few potentially life-threatening injuries to keep him down. Just think - when Brass Hat was foaled in 2001, Rachel Alexandra's sire, Medaglia d'Oro had yet to make his 2-year-old debut - and Mine That Bird's sire, Birdstone, had just been born a week earlier. In horse racing career lifespan terms, Brass Hat practically has his own TARDIS - he's even got a year on fellow time traveler Einstein. Long may he continue.

There was still more high-quality racing over the weekend - Bribon won the Met Mile at Belmont and Thorn Song took the Shoemaker Mile in California, but a pall was cast over events by the injury to veteran jockey Rene Douglas. This article explains the accident in some detail, while this somewhat unfortunately-titled Thoroughbred Times article, 'Theriot suspended, Born to Be euthanized' fills in the blanks about the filly involved.

I recommend a read of the Paulick Report commentary about the role of the stewards in these sorts of incidents; it's an overdue discussion in my opinion and while it acknowledges the part played by jockey Jamie Theriot in the accident, it's evident there is plenty of blame to go around elsewhere. One hopes something positive may come out of that.

While those efforts are not going to help Rene Douglas walk again, you can get involved in a number of activities being organized to assist his family via a Facebook group or you might consider a donation to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. Hopefully Douglas will not be joining their ranks, but it's certainly a worthy cause.

Update 5069: Off to OLEX, and will add updates via twitter while there.

Update 5068: Wow, it was chilly this morning at Woodbine! I had five to gallop, so a nice and easy morning this morning. A change from the last couple of days which were more busy! All mine galloped nicely for an uneventful morning. We had a few workers, and Luis came in for the workers. I think they worked well, but I missed them today!

Update 5067: Here is this week's Facebook Group e-mail: E-mail 26: Birdie, Rachel, Zenyatta, Rene Douglas, OLEX and NYTs, Woodbine.

Jamie Theriot, who was involved in the incident that led to the accident of Rene Douglas has been suspended: THERIOT GETS 30 DAYS FOR ROLE IN DOUGLAS ACCIDENT.

And Autism Awareness got back to winning a Graded Stakes race yesterday: Autism Awareness Springs Berkeley Shocker.

You can follow morning updates through training hours on twitter: AlexBrownRacing.

    And please keep calling.

TBFRIENDS AND SAD NEWS ABOUT LARK. RESCUED FROM A "RESCUE": A SAD COMMENTARY ON OUR TIMES...
(hay debbie l.a. everybunny misses you.)
    ***************************************************
Tuesday, May 26th... Have to finish feeding our ranch, then drive 15 minutes to feed 22 horses at another ranch. Friends phoned last night and they are having truck problems. They are unable to get home from their long weekend. So this morning I must also feed their 5 horses.

But I wanted to tell you Lark did not survive. Inexcusable the way he was neglected. We are filing a complaint with the district attorneys office. Enough is enough.

I am leaving his pictures up, and also the morning journal from yesterday.

Early tomorrow morning I will return to share with you life on our up and down ranch. Have a good Tuesday. God Bless Lark.

    Joe
    *****************************************************
Monday, May 25th... Chores are forever, and this holiday Monday must get under way. I wanted to show you Lark, who you can take a look at below on Top Row. What a sad story. We rescued Lark from a rescue ranch.

The rescue ranch is now out of business, thank goodness. Located in the fancy part of Marin, we have taken 6 of their horses, all thoroughbreds.

It is a jungle out there. The market flooded with private homes who are suddenly calling themselves rescue ranches. Asking for funds on the internet.

And I wanted to show you Radio, who you can see below on the Bottom Row. It was three weeks ago today when Radio made his eventful entrance into our world. He is a hoot. Thinks he owns the joint.

Quinn was adopted on Saturday. His brand new home located in beautiful Grass Valley. Quinn has a stream running right through his pasture. His new wife is Doris, a former race horse who won the first two races of her career before she was injured.

Hungry barn horses are wondering where is the old man with their morning grains? Hot coffee is from Peets. Microwave pancakes made by Krusteaz. Enjoy your holiday barbecue Monday, and be sure to hug your horses. A Monday without Doctor House. No more 24. What exactly are we supppose to do with our lives?

    Joe

Posted by: jonnagrey at May 26, 2009 3:18 PM

###Joe this morning writes TBFriends is filing cruelty charges against the rescue ranch "out of business, thank God" that was responsible for Lark.

I had such hopes for Lark because I read about his arrival TBFriends in yesterday's entry, which was also my birthday. Was prepared to send a check for extra goodies and Joe's special brand of TLC, but Joe writes this morning that Lark did not survive the night.

I am heartbroken. However, as Joe says, Enough is enough.

It is the ultimate cruelty to subject any living thing to the kind of life Lark endured. At least he died at a place where there was kindness and peace--and a chance at life. He chose his own path, leaving us the poorer for it.

###There is a special Hell for people who do this to others.

###God bless you, Lark, and the far-too-many others who have gone before you.

    FEDERAL ANTISLAUGHTER CAMPAIGN (AAHS)

(NEW) STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF 5/26

    crossposting from the DB

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=37557.1

    Dear Friends,

With the start of this week, we are implementing a variation to our strategy in an effort to gain swift support for H.R.503.

Below is our target list (past cosponsors of H.R.6598).

When calling each office, please ask for the LD (legislative Aide) who is handling H.R.503. When speaking with the LD, it is very important to gather feedback. Once you have feedback, please email that feedback to CJ (potlucky@sbcglobal.net)

We are currently at 128 cosponsors. Great job everyone!!

[note from CJ - target list is in my next post]

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - You can use this toll-free number 800-828-0498 and ask for a legislator by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of legislator's office phone).

Please Note: We have started a separate thread titled “State Action Needed”. Several States have introduced their own legislation to allow horse slaughter. These states need our help, to keep this from happening. Please pass the word!!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE.....Let it be heard.

FEDERAL TARGET LIST - Week of May 26, 2009

(Note - The date shown after each Rep's name below, is the date he/she signed on to cosponsor former antiHS bill HR 6598 in the 110th Congress.)

Remember - as former cosponsors of anti-horse slaughter legislation, these Reps are already on our side and should be easy to approach. We are seeking for them to sign up to cosponsor HR 503.

AND - with our new strategy - we are looking for INPUT from these offices for you to email to me as per the directions in Deb & Shelley's post (copied in my last post).

Don't hesitate to email me - potlucky@sbcglobal.net - if you have questions about this new strategy.

    ## Kay,
    Happy Birthday (yesterday ?)
I always read your posts with interest and find that you have original and thoughtful opinions. I'm glad you're an FOB.

I know you are heart broken about Lark and all the others, so am I. But take heart if you will, for we will win.

And when we get slaughter stopped, we can start on state legislators to make punishments for animal abuse a more serious sentence. I guess there will always be those who abuse, but we can try to put their as..s away for it! !
Take heart my fren, its a bad ole world, but people like the FOBs can make it a little better.

Little children should be allowed to imagine, to let their minds run ahead to things that can be and things that never were. The imagination lets us see beyond the actual outline of things as they are. A mind freed of bias can detect times and times ahead.

Go back and recapture the imagination you never allowed to develop. Give it the freedom to examine your motives, your feelings, your heart. It will reveal joys and purposes and realign things gone wrong. There is no drab space in the imagination, no tears, and no losses--for that is the purpose of imagination, to remove and heal and let go.

We have donated over a million bucks to rescue horses. We have learned that many of those dollars were never used for the purpose of saving horses but for other selfish purposes. We have learned that some of those so-called rescues were not.

Miracle Horse Rescue is the real deal. To witness the transformation of Faith & the birth of a healthy son is nothing less than stunning.

Please help support the horses that we rescue or that are surrendered by loving owners who can no longer care for them. At least they are choosing the high road.

MHR supports 3 FOB saves, Misty & Rosie who will live out their lives at MHR & Glory who is up for adoption.

Purchase tickets to the Hay Drive. The prizes are outstanding. Where else could you have a chance at Fred Stone's Barbaro for a few bucks.

    A MEMORABLE MIRACLE

That's what today is. Justice introduces himself to all the Faithful. Those who have spent countless hours watching & awaiting his arrival.

In all likelihood neither he or his Mama would have survived had they not come to MHR. To witness the transformation of a downtrodden, emaciated mare just 2 short months ago to a stunning, confident mare who seemingly had an easy delivery to a very healthy foal is the greatest testament to Stephanie & Rob.

So, CONGRATULATIONS MHR. You did it, again. But this time you faced many challenges head on & brought our girl through with flying colors.

I couldn't be prouder of you.

    Hello Famblee,
Boy I've missed you all! Computer problems at home AND work have kept me away for a few days. I didn't get to post yesterday, an oh so eventful and memorable Memorial Day. If I may, I'd like to say something now.

Yesterday was a day to remember and honor Heros. Heros who gave their lives for every American, present and future; human and animal. These Heros will never again get to feel the greates gift they gave us...freedom. Some of us told of our personal Heros. God bless them all. And yesterday we honored the true Heros, those who didn't come home. Ask any Medal of Honor recipient, they'll tell you they wear the Medal for those "true Heros" who gave their lives.

Many, many of those Heros couldn't speak. They were horses, and donkeys, and mules. From the War of Independence to the Civil War to Korea, Vietnam and today in Afghanistan and Iraq. Horses are there. They carried American soldiers into battle and pulled artillery caissons; they carried wounded and dead Americans out of battle and, still today, they pull caissons with coffins on them in Arlington National Cemetary.

They kept the American soldier going. Some say the "Greatest Generation" was the end of the horse era. Neigh, they will always be there.

They will be there to carry other Heros. People like Sergeant-Major Raymond E. Morgan. Who joined the Marine Corps in 1944 after a year in the Coast Guard. A year that saw him on a destroyer off of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He spent the rest of the war in the Pacific. He served in Korea getting shot at there too. When he was asked why did he go to Viet Nam for three tours, he said, "I thought I could help keep some Marines alive to get home."

In 1984, after 40 years of service, he retired. Honored and respected by hundreds. In November of of 2007 he was laid to rest. To him I say, "Thank you Dad. Because of you, we are free."

(See Sandra, no story of a Hero is boring. Your Dad IS a Hero. God Bless Him!)

To everyone, Thank you! You are Heros too. Everyday we work miracles. We bicker and argue sure, but that's Famblee.

    God Bless You.

NO Horse left behind or EVER Forgotten!
    Lee

Many rainbows always back to you, Angel Dee! :)

Lou Ann...Thanks for the 'heads-up' about Debbie's puder...I've sent along an email, but then not sure...is she up/running again?

I SO HOPE...at some point in time, Debbie might be granted access to post here again, because she has been such an 'importrant' Famblee Member for so long a time....so gracious about helping us who are 'blue-ink-link' challenged....always so to the forefront on helping the horses, and other four-leggeds too....and ALWAYS SO LOVING/SUPPORTING of each of us....her brothers/sisters in bArbaro!!

I miss her just 'TERRRRRRRRRBLE' here...as so many others do:(

###Thank you for all the birthday wishes. In my world, belated ones count just the same as the on-time ones. I also believe in eating dessert first.

###Yes, {{{Lark}}}. Another group is looking into exactly WHICH "rescue" in ritzy Marin County was responsible for Lark's condition and to make sure other horses/animals in their care are no longer there. It is disgusting what people will do to animals and to each other (scams, etc.), but this is sadly the state of affairs. Laws with TEETH in them and junkyard dogs for prosecutors and judges will take care of these people but good.

###Meanwhile, I am going to figure out another project to help horses. Can't adopt another one--full up at the KAY'S INN--but I can foster a horse in Lark's memory, maybe. There was just something about that guy ... He is apparently by a well-known TB, TV Lark. At least that's the scuttlebutt from the other site.

###Thanks again for the wishes. Love all you guys ;o)

KAY...I somehow missed your B'Day...and I'm here now to wish for you a BELATED Very Happy B'Day, Kay!!

I hope it was a good one....and I hope this whole coming year will provide you with only 'sunny moments'....not so realistic, 'fershure', but Hay! It can't hurt to HOPE:)

    ####Dear Fren LouAnn R,

Please tell our little Southern Bell, Debbie LA, that she may send an e-mail to me at otherlyncaps@hotmail.com. If she has no working puter, then, perhaps if I get an e-mail from you, I can get my phone number to her again, via your kind assistance.

She and I talked on the phone before the unveiling weekend. I am a bit concerned. She seemed so tired. I understand what's in her heart.

    Thanks.

Thank You Lou Ann for the Debbie L.A. update. I too knew the circumstances of Debbie's departure from being on the board.

I too think we need her here...God bless her, she sent me info on how to BlueLink for TB Friends and a little note a week ago. (And I will learn, I promise.)

And I had no doubt that she would continue the work of the Barbaro Nation. Nothing could keep her from it. It's wonderful that most of us know that.

Watch the ex-PMU mare, Faith at MHR and her very, very, very last foal, Justice. In my mind, she is evidence of what we are about. Just one part of what we are about.

She and her new colt are mesmerizing. She had her first post-foaling exam from the Vet and several usual injections. So did Justice.

It is an absolute tribute to Steph and Rob's efforts with her--that this exam with the Doc in the pen and her being physically distanced from her newborn--did not go awry. She was nervous, but everyone was in the exact right place at the right time, and everything was completed with success...she understands no one is there to harm her--or her foal. And the Pierce's will continue to send her this message over and over again.

Tonight, there they are. Like so many of our other efforts--real, living proof of the power of the FoB and our Nation. And the support that we can give to gain, support and empower people like Stephanie in their life-long work to ensure a good life for horses in peril.

I am too tired to go further with this, but I urge all of you to pick a rescue and help them do what they do best; what we could be doing if we could.

And call your politicians. We have to stop HS in it's tracks. Until Federal Law is in place, we will have one state after another being financed and seduced into thinking that a horse slaughter industry in their state is a wonderful idea.

As Joe at TB Friends said after they lost the terribly diminished TB Lark from a bogus rescue group gone belly-up, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Please, get to the point where you are tipped over the edge and feel the urgency of this work we are doing.

    It's time. This year. Now.
    Sleep tight, FoBs.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I enjoyed reading both of your blogs. As always, I learn so much about horses from your blogs. Please forgive me for asking what is probably a silly question and perhaps it is a diference in parlance on this side "of the pond". But can you explain what the "stiffles & hocks" might be to this non-horse educated nurse?

As our Nancy in CT would say, "RIP, Lark, and may perpetual light shine upon you." At least Lark knew the loving touch of Joe and Kathy Shelton at the end of life's trail.

    #### To Sofie's Lee: Kudos to your Dad!
A belated happy birthday to our pals Verna and Kay! May you have a grand new year. ####
