    Barbaro Updates 835

    Updates are now here

Update 4816: Bob Baffert, Silverbulletday, Eddie Maple, JaneT Elliot will be elected to the Racing Hall of Fame this year: Baffert, Maple, Elliot to Hall of Fame.

Now someone give Tice a pat and a carrot. He is one of Silverbulletday's babies, and running in low level races in New Mexico.

Update 4815: The New York Times' The Rail is back for another Triple Crown series. The Rail also has it's own Facebook Group.

Update 4814: A wet and chillier morning this morning at Woodbine. We had six sets. All mine galloped nicely. I also helped walk a few horses as we were a little short of help on the ground. This happens when new horses ship as they did last week. I am sure things will get back to a more regular routine in the next few days.

Update 4813: The trainer for I Want Revenge, Jeff Mullins, has been fined $2,500 and given a 7 day suspension which will be conveniently between the Derby and Preakness (Trainer Mullins Suspended Seven Days)

Nicanor put in a 4 furlong work yesterday (Nicanor Works; Special Offer)

Excerpt: "He went nicely," commented trainer Michael Matz, who also said the 3-year-old Dynaformer colt will be leaving Keeneland in the next couple days. "He's going to run up north at Delaware."

And please call the Governor of Montana and request he veto the slaughter bill: 406-444-3111

How convenient for Mullins with his suspension.
Baby J will be 6 weeks old tomorrow, so maybe will have pictures soon.

Hiya, FsOB! Wellll, it's Monday and back to work for me. May everyone have a safe & productive week, mine will be busier than usual for the next three weeks, so I won't be able to post each AM.

I echo Nancy in wishing Lentenor a belated happy birthday. I hope that Nicanor's transfer to Delaware is a good one. Did he ever actually race at Keeneland?

Can someone please post a blue-link today with more info re. what has happened to the Venezuelan polo team's ponies in FLA? Thanks very much! Peace, RMH

    #### To Margie in NM: May Honeysuckle the Pit Bull have a bright new start in her life.
To Sandra: I hope that you & Chief had a good weekend.
Has anyone heard from Maribel this past week? ####

    It's NOT about Mullins.

IEAH owns 1/2 of I Want Revenge. Mullin trains.

"Prayers for the Polo horses in FL. how sad. It's on the news right now!"

Mullins 'over-the-counter medication' is nothing compared to what was administered to those 'Polo' horses.

How many of you out there take medicine to get through your day?

And, as far as we know, Mullins feeds his horses.

    Paragallo? 3-Strikes? et al?

I would like to say "Happy Monday" to all but reading some of the above information makes that impossible. I was stunned to see the headlines about the polo horses. I don't think I even want to read the article. Let's all do our best to continue our fight to help horses in whatever way we can.

14 polo horses die at Florida tournament
Cause unknown as Venezuelan equines at U.S. Open go quickly
    Inside NBCSports.com

    updated 4:09 a.m. ET, Mon., April 20, 2009

WELLINGTON, Fla. - Veterinarians were waiting for test results Monday to find out why at least 14 polo horses fell ill and died in a short time before their match at a Florida tournament.

The horses from the Venezuela-based Lechuza Caracas team were being unloaded from their trailers Sunday afternoon when two of them collapsed and others acted dizzy and disoriented, according to a statement from the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

“They started getting dizzy,” polo club spokesman Tim O’Connor told The Palm Beach Post. “They dropped down right onto the grass.”

Veterinarians already at the event quickly tried treating the horses, inserting intravenous lines and trying to cool them down with fans and water. Observers hung blue tarps to shield some of the horses from the crowd’s view.

Seven of the horses died on the polo club’s grounds and the rest died after they were taken elsewhere.

The match in the U.S. Open Polo Championship was postponed and an exhibition game with a substitute team was held in its place.

The carcasses of at least 14 horses were taken to a state agricultural laboratory for necropsies to learn the causes of their deaths.

“It could be the water, hay, bedding. We just don’t know. When we find out what it is, we will take all the necessary actions,” John A. Wash, the polo club’s president of club operations, told the newspaper.

You must call the shelter by 8am on the dog's "date". This shelter euths at 8 am, before they open, by heartstick. If they are closed, leave a message, including the dog's number, and then follow up with a call at 10 am, after they open. Ask to speak with Jeff. It might be a good idea to contact the volunteer as well. Please do not ask this shelter to hold an animal, or help with boarding, vetting, transporting, etc. because they will not do that. The volunteer has some limited info on what is available in the area.

    Morning, fellow Fans.

I can't say "Good" today. The coverage of the polo ponies on the Today show had me close to tears. So sad. I hope they find the cause soon.

It's not too late to wish Lentenor a Happy Birthday...even though I had the 19th on my calendar (and googled his dob to be sure), Jerry on the discussion board posted that he was actually born in the wee hours of April 20th!

So again, sweet Lentenor, I wish you a Happy Birthday!

I switched channels when the story of the polo ponies was beginning...I am such a WIMP!

FOLKS, WE HAVE AN URGENT SITUATION ON THE DISCUSSION BOARD...please note the donation info in the last paragraph and do your best to help! I know we are all strapped, and I initially felt intimidated by some very generous donations others were able to make (I am on a fixed income and can only afford $15), but if EVERYONE sent at least $5. it will be gratefully received by the folks "on the ground" who are doing their best to save these mustangs. What a blessing to have such a respected person as Jerry Finch from Habitat for Horses present to lend his assistance!

Scores of Neglected Mustangs Imperiled on Nebraska Ranch

Ranch Owner in Jail and Need for Aid is Urgent

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jerry Finch 409-682-6621

    19 April 2009

Alliance, Nebraska -– At least 60 horses are dead and more than 100 others are seriously emaciated at a mustang facility in Morrill County, Nebraska. Habitat for Horses, an equine rescue organization, received reports last week of problems at the 3-Strikes Ranch. Jerry Finch of the equine rescue organization Habitat for Horses returned from flying over the property early Sunday, and reports that “The situation is even worse than we suspected.” They spotted another 20 animals on the range, several barely able to stand. Another 50-100 emaciated horses are in holding pens with only a small amount of muddy and trampled alfalfa. They are suffering from a variety of ailments including severe worm infestation and terribly neglected hooves. Two young foals, approximately four months old, were found dead. Necropsies have been performed on both; a full report, including toxicology results is due back Friday.

3-Strikes Ranch, according to its web site, is a "Mustang outpost, a Non-Profit habitat to hundreds of mustangs from all over the United States, a natural environment for wild horses to run on the open prairies of the Sand Hills." Mustangs captured by the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) that were not adopted after three attempts -- three strikers -- were sent to Jason Meduna at 3-Strikes Ranch. Meduna also accepted horses from people unable to care for their mustangs, and those in need of special training. A number of private owners who had placed horses with Meduna have already retrieved their animals. The BLM was at the facility last week and removed one of the three horses for which they currently hold title. The others were reported to be dead.

According to ranch owner Meduna more than 300 animals were living at the ranch in January. He has attributed the deaths to toxic poisoning, but to date no proof of this has been provided. Meduna is currently in jail on an animal cruelty charge stemming from the horse already removed by the BLM.

Habitat for Horses is assisting local law enforcement, the Bureau of Land Management, and a number of volunteers in caring for these animals.

Hay and feed-based wormer are urgently needed. Local families are urged to contact Finch if they are able to provide tactical support for this operation. Donations for hay are being collected by Front Range Equine Rescue in Colorado. donatebuy@frontrangeequinerescue.org If you do not have access to Paypal you can mail donations to: Front Range Equine Rescue, P.O. Box 307, Larkspur, CO 80118. Please notate on your check and/or Paypal donations that it is for "3-Strikes Mustangs". Any and all help with hay is greatly appreciated.

HERE IS THE LINKk to the press release about the starving mustangs...please click and post to add your donation info to the total.

THANK YOU on behalf of these beautiful creatures who were so grievously neglected!

If the necropsies show the horses were illegally drugged, the Florida Department of Agriculture will conduct an investigation, polo club spokesman Tim O'Connor said. The United States Polo Association likely also would conduct an investigation, O'Connor said.

At the highly competitive level of the Wellington tournament, distributing "cocktails" to horses prior to matches to enhance their performance is a common practice, said several polo experts. The steroid-like chemicals are given to horses mixed with their water or can be administered by needle, the sources said.

According to several sources, the horses had a reaction to a steroid derivative that may have been tainted with a cleaning solution, the Sun Sentinel reported yesterday. The shots apparently were administered by an Argentine vet not licensed in the U.S., it further reported.

April 20 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

A little brief authority can play such fantastic tricks before high heaven as to make the angels weep. The angels are not the only ones to weep.

Authority, among other things, is very brief. Clearly so when we try to control our thoughts and keep our tongues in check. Misused authority makes people self-destruct. It is not so much the authority we wield over others that destroys us, but our failure to wield authority over ourselves. What terrific power we have, but still we whine, "I just can't do it."

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF APRIL 20

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=36180.1

[crossposting AAHS message from Shelley & Deb at the DB] [note from CJ - I'm omitting the lists from this post and posting them, and cosponsor lists, in separate posts] [the calling lists and lists of cosponsors, are also posted at the above DB thread]

    Dear friends,

We're still holding at 115 cosponsors for HR503 and 14 cosponsors for S727. Although we realize that Congress has been very busy working on improving our economy, we must keep "The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act" a hot issue in D.C.

To help keep that flame burning, we’re going to start putting together an additional strategy that involves an off the board team effort and we’ll need a couple of volunteers to help with this project (email us off the board if you wish to help).

Once we have the plan ready to go, we will need all those who want to participate to send us your email addy. This additional strategy worked very well for us last year and we will resume it in the very near future.

    In the meantime,

we must do all that we can to help ensure passage of HR503 and S727 to end horse slaughter in America and the transport of our horses across our borders to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

Please call your own U.S. Representative and your two U.S. Senators and ask them to cosponsor H.R. 503 and S.727.

Once you have finished calling your own Representatives, and have the time to help more, please focus on the lists below. Both lists represent past cosponsors of H.R.503 and S.311 and will help us gain swift support for our bills.

[note from CJ - the House targets on this list were past cosponsors of HR 6598.]

Thanks for all of your help.

[target lists in the above DB thread and in following posts here at Comments]

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - You can use this toll-free number 800-828-0498 and ask for a legislator by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of legislator's office phone)

Please Note: We have started a separate thread titled “State Action Needed”. Several States have introduced their own legislation to allow horse slaughter. These states need our help. to keep this from happening. Please pass the word!!

PS - don't be discouraged that we didn't pick up any new cosponsors last week - Congress was in recess, and though offices were staffed, I don't think that such paperwork as cosponsorship was going through. Look for us to pick up more cs's in the near future!

    FEDERAL TARGET LISTS

Once again, we're in a holding pattern with 115 House cosponsors for HR 503 and 14 Senate cosponsors for S 727. Have posted the lists of cosponsors in my last post, for everyone's convenience, and will update as and when more cosponsors are added.

(Note - The date shown after each legislator's name on the target lists below, is the date he/she signed on to cosponsor the respective former antiHS bills in the 110th Congress - HR 6598 in the House and S 311 in the Senate.)

Remember - as former cosponsors of anti-horse slaughter legislation, those on these lists are already on our side and should be easy to approach. We are seeking for them to sign up to cosponsor the respective Bills - HR 503 in the House and S 727 in the Senate.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - You can use this toll-free number 800-828-0498 and ask for a legislator by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of legislator's office phone)

    sharing email from Laura Allen

Hey, I would appreciate it if you guys could post and circulate: This Wed. April 22 from 6:30-9:30 at Widener University School of Law in Wilmington, DE, I am speaking about the Equine Prevention of Cruelty Act of 2009, HR 503/SB 727 and the state resolutions and bills that have been proposed or passed on the issue of horse slaughter. I’m hoping to get more people contacting Congress about the bill! Go here for more information:

    http://www.animallawcoalition.com/horse-slaughter/article/723

    Thank you so much! Laura

    excerpt from the above link:

Animal Law Coalition's Executive Director, Laura Allen, will speak about the pending anti-horse slaughter bill, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, H.R. 503, and the issues and controversy surrounding that bill including efforts in some states to resurrect horse slaughter in the U.S.

DV, lasix/foruosimide is given to TB's who are particularly prone to bleed from the lungs while training and racing. The stress of running causes the little capillaries to leak, and lasix minimizes the bleeding, along with increasing urine output. There are many parts of the world where injecting with lasix is forbidden. There's a huge movement here in the US to ban lasix. The substance allegedly administered by Jeff Mullens was not lasix but a drug that is generally given to improve lung function and promote easier breathing for asthma and COPD. Dumb thing to do. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Have inquired of many if training might improve conditioning to minimize bleeding from the lungs, and haven't really had a cogent answer. Seems like it would work, doesn't it?

Please everyone, think good thoughts for the mustangs of 3Strikes.

It was a bad day for polo ponies, yesterday. Rest in peace, little ones.

Are you a Pennsylvania who wants to help end the slaughter of America's horses? Will you help our team?

We really need more help contacting our legislators about the Equine Prevention of Cruelty Act of 2009, HR 503/SB 727.

Pennsylvania is a big Ag state, and we are fighting a tough lobby. Are you willing to help us help the horses?

It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

If youd like to join Pennsylvanians Against Horse Slaughter and get on the emailing list for targeting our PA Senator and Reps who have not yet agreed to support the anti-slaughter legislation please email me at Lor's Email Addy.Pennsylvanians Against Horse Slaughter!

A few minutes each day for our Horses it not much to ask...is it?

Thanks Cheryl, but if the horses lungs bleed from training, are they being over pushed. and over worked, that is what is sounds like to me, My mom took lasix to help get rid of water ? but a horse?

Posted by: dv at April 20, 2009 4:48 PM

JV--Lasix lowers the pulmonary pressures in the lungs of a horse. Subsequently, this lowers the risk of bleeding.

Learned this by listening to the congressional testimony last summer.

Posted by: Jennie (Kentucky) at April 20, 2009 4:51 PM

Thanks Jenne, but my question is why do there lungs bleed to begin with.. are they over worked or over pushed beyond their physical means that harm is done so they give them drugs ???

    VET CARE FOR ABUSED MUSTANGS

(Please see my post timestamped 1:58 pm today for complete details...)

Jerry Finch from Habitat for Horses was blown away that yesterday the FOBs raised enough $$$ to feed nearly 200 neglected and starved mustangs for THREE WEEKS - what an awesome effort, especially on a Sunday! He is suggesting that further donations be dedicated for ongoing medical care...hooves are in TERRIBLE shape and there are approximately 70 who will need to be gelded.

Just click the link to donate...every little bit helps, and the FOBs do work miracles!

Glad to see "The Rail" back again (see Alex's update #4815 up top)...it was always a great read last year!

SOS Equines in Washington state has four beautiful feedlot horses listed. Three are in need of a home before money can be raised. One has a home offer. Please help if you can! They are supposed to ship on Wed.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
    I love you, Barbaro Jackson!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd . . . as you know you take me to where angels walk!
As our Angel Dee says, "It is Affirmed!"

So very much sadness in our equine world these last several days - God bless them and keep them close to his heart . . . . they certainly are close to mine.

Many thanks, DEBBIE L.A. for posting the National Geographic piece, The Noble Horse, simply breathtaking and yet another golden thread of evidence that someone else "gets it"!!

And many thanks, WENDY, for the video of ZENYATTA! Awesome!! Have seen many post of her but don't believe I'd seen her before - what a gorgeous girl!!

And a special THANK YOU to ANGEL DEE!

Holding hands, paws, hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation!

    Hugs, love, and prayers,
    always,

Tice running in low level races in New Mexico.

Tice, His sire is A.P. Indy. You think if we called Baffert he would help? And why did there change his name? He is a good looking horse.

The last part on Caracel was great! Love National Geographic, I would send that to my Rep's but he would not watch it. His aide don't read the info I send.
Thank you, I Remember we could not go to bed, until you tucked Barbaro in. Gee it's still hard to type his name.

    Aunty Cheryl...

I just found out about Rayu myself...it explains what Kathy and I've been perceiving ever since we tried to connect with him...

    But he's alive...

Thanks to God, Equus, Epona...and all those who love and prayed for his being found...

Angel Dee, could we have a rainbow for Rayu and all those trying to sort thru the situation at 3 Strikes?

Debbie LA, I wish we could somehow contact Bob Baffert about Tice.......I have always been a fan of his and think he really might help, is this a possibility? Alex??

Hiya, FsOB, on what has been a truly sad day for horses. My heart goes out to the South American polo ponies who died in FLA and to the humans who revered and cared for them. Incredibly tragic! May the cause of this poisoning be found quickly and may no other animals be exposed.

To Wendy, your blue-link of the ride aboard Zenyatta restored my spirits this evening. What an awesome simulation for a would-be rider like yours truly!

Ditto to Cheryl Jones for sharing the news that Rayu the Mustang has been located. We can all use a dose of good news.

By the way, Wendy & Alex, there is a really disgustingly titled blue-link that needs to be zapped. The entry is timed at 5:25 PM on 04/20.

Seeing that Bob Baffert is being inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame made me think of my late Father. He really liked Bob Baffert (I confess to knowing nothing about him, I just remember that Dad spoke highly of him).

Sending thoughts of peace to all here on what has been a distressing day. RMH

    #### Does anyone know if E. Paragallo's attorney had to state why he was seeking a postponement? Forgive my cynicism, but one wonders if it isn't a strategy based on the belief that time will diminish the outrage over how these animals were treated. Wrong!
To Angel Dee: Thank you for your blessings for the spirits of the 21 polo ponies who passed over.
To Jonna: Thank you for the info about the polo ponies this AM. I can't ever log onto to this site while I am at work. But the updates about the ponies were on the Internet all day, so I managed to get more info as the day progressed. Really sad, my heart goes out to all the grooms and hands-on caregivers for these incredibly beautiful horses. ####
