    Barbaro Updates 833

    Updates are now here

Update 4798: More on Jeannine Edwards: Horse Notebook: Derby talk Edwards' specialty. Found on Paulick Report.

Update 4797: Montana legislature sends their horse slaughter bill back to their Governor after rejecting his amendments. The governor can now veto the bill or sign it into law: Montana legislature rejects amendments to horse slaughter bill.

Update 4796: A little more than a week to go to Barbaro's Memorial unveiling at Churchill Downs. According to an e-mail I received, 130 FOBs have signed up for a dinner on Saturday night.

A here is some additional information on the Derby Museum exhibit: Derby Museum to Hold Barbaro Tribute.

Update 4795: Submit questions to Jeannine Edwards, who has been very supportive of this site. Jeannine will appear on Bloodhorse's Talkin' Horses April 21: Jeannine Edwards.

Update 4794: Some cool coverage for the ABR YouTube contest re: horse slaughter: Moby Makes Some Noise Against Horse Slaughter.

Update 4793: A very pleasant morning's work this morning at Woodbine. We had seven sets. Three of which did some gate schooling. All mine galloped nicely. And the weather looks like it is improving.

Someone on the backside yesterday asked me about placing a horse. Very cool that people here are becoming more aware of what we are doing. Now to find a spot for a horse before he goes to auction. He is currently at a farm. A couple of people, also here, may be able to help out.

Update 4792: Steve Haskin's gives an interesting review of the highlights from the Kentucky Derby Trail in this article - KY Derby Trail: Memorable Moments, excerpt:

Of course, most everyone will single out I Want Revenge's Gotham and especially Wood Memorial, Quality Road's Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby, and Friesan Fire's Louisiana Derby, but for the purpose of this column, the object is to recall moments a bit less obvious that left a lasting impression and will go a long way in finding those elusive potential overlays.

    And please keep calling.

    Good morning, fellow Fans!

##Robyn - re: last night's suggestion about sending Ernie out to shovel Joe Shelton's poop upon poop - great idea, right after he has the operation I had in mind for him! I understand from a story posted yesterday that he STILL has not sent any more money for expenses on his farm. I really hope he is not allowed to walk away scott free.

Kudos to the Jockey Club for providing open access to their database. Think of all the horses that can be saved because they can now be identified in a more timely fashion.

Off to formulate my calling strategy for the day. Maine went from full cosponsorship last session to only 25% this session. We're working on it!

    LOL! DEBBIE!
JOE FOR WHAT MY NIECE CALLS; CHAMPAGNE THURSDAY
    ****************************************************
    Thursday, April 16th...

You can tell friends about the goose bump events. Living with 200 animals, and almost daily there are unexplainable moments. Friends say sure, whatever, and walk away mumbling this guy watches too much Saving Grace. Soon poor Cathy will have to make arrangements for Joe at the old folks home.

On Monday around 3:00 p.m. A phone message from a trainer friend who runs a fancy dressage barn. She needs a reliable person to work summer months. 12 hours a week. $20.00 an hour, paid in cash. Saddling, unsaddling, grooming and bathing. The trainer says with all the visitors to Tbfriends, perhaps I know of someone who would like to make $240.00 a week, tax free?

Well sure. The problem is transportation. The fancy dressage barn is located just outside of Sacramento. Many of our visitors come from Vacaville, Davis and Woodland.

Monday, 3:10 p.m. Only 10 minutes since I listened to the dressage barn message. A teenage girl at our front gate. The girl is dressed like she is applying for a position on The Apprentice. Slacks, blouse, nice jacket. She is nervous. Wants to know, are you Joe?

    Yep.

I would like a job application please. I really need a summer job. Are you hiring?

Um, there are no applications. There is not a summer job. Sorry. I am looking for work myself. Close to my home.

And she had this expression, as if her world was crashing.

I asked how old are you?

    17.

    Where do you live?

Elverta. (which is 20 minutes from the fancy dressage barn)

Naturally I gave her the number to our trainer friend. The girl begins her new job Memorial Day weekend. She calls to say her family has been struggling with money. The $240.00 a week is going to be a huge help.

Now these kind of things happen all the time. I could tell you about a last second decision to rescue Mason, and how Mason later changed the course of a young girls life. I could tell you about Bear, and we call him Bear because he is a big teddy bear. After researching his racing tattoo, we discovered his registered name is Bear.

How many times has there been a zero balance in our checking account, and the mortgage payment was due? Sleepless nights, worrying over the $15,000.00 a month it costs to keep our ranch afloat. And then wham, there are 3 adoptions in one weekend, and our mortage payment is made. New owners would tell us, they decided to adopt from Tbfriends because it felt right.

Yesterday, before our phone conversation ended, the teenage girl with the new job says she drove to Woodland to ask for an application because she had a hunch. And golly, this sure worked out well.

Off to feed the hungry. And to thank my lucky stars. Living with 200 animals. Not a bad gig at all.

    Joe

April 16 Cherokee Devotional (sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

What limitations cannot be moved? Have we tried to move even a little the thing that dares us to do anything?

Someone will always try to say we are stuck with this thing so we may as well get used to it. But people adjust too easily to burdens when with a little wisdom they would know how to nudge it aside. Test your limitations---and keep testing them. Refuse the voices of solace that speak dolefully. Let nothing daunt your desire to keep trying.

We offer thanks....to the messengers of the Great Spirit who dwells in the skies above, who gives all things useful to men, who is the source and ruler of the health and life.

    FEDERAL TARGET LISTS

Once again, we're in a holding pattern with 115 House cosponsors for HR 503 and 14 Senate cosponsors for S 727. Have posted the lists of cosponsors in my last post, for everyone's convenience, and will update as and when more cosponsors are added.

(Note - The date shown after each legislator's name on the target lists below, is the date he/she signed on to cosponsor the respective former antiHS bills in the 110th Congress - HR 6598 in the House and S 311 in the Senate.)

Remember - as former cosponsors of anti horse slaughter legislation, those on these lists are already on our side and should be easy to approach. We are seeking for them to sign up to cosponsor the respective Bills - HR 503 in the House and S 727 in the Senate.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - You can use this toll-free number 800-828-0498 and ask for a legislator by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of legislator's office phone)

    (Edited Churchill Downs release)

On April 26, after the dedication of the Barbaro memorial sculpture at Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum will open a tribute exhibit, Barbaro: The Heart of a Winner. This exhibit will offer a multi-dimensional view of Barbaro as a champion athlete and a fighter; a horse that rose to the top of his game by winning the Kentucky Derby and then struggling against long odds for survival.

The exhibit will feature his racing accomplishments, his connection with fans and children, his struggle to overcome injury, and his ability to capture the hearts of many. It will document his struggle with laminitis, along with the extensive medical care he received.

Other special features include: 2006 Kentucky Derby Gold Cup, racing silks, Edgar Prado’s racing saddle, fan mail and scrap book. Guests will also be able to record their thoughts about Barbaro in a video booth. The digital sentiments will then be posted on youtube.com.

Tickets for the Barbaro Memorial Breakfast, which is from 8-10 a.m., are on sale now. Proceeds of the $150 tickets partially benefit Barbaro Fund for Laminitis Research. It will be hosted by Barbaro’s owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson. Guests will also hear an exclusive “Making of the Memorial” presentation by sculptor Alexa King.

Tickets also include a private opening of the museum’s new Barbaro: Heart of a Winner exhibit.

Tickets are available online at www. derbymuseum.org.

Three UF veterinary students win financial-aid awards
    Apr 16, 2009
    DVM NEWSMAGAZINE

Gainesville, Fla. -- Three students at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine received financial awards from Gulfstream Park to support their studies in equine medicine.

The Gulfstream Barbaro Awards were established three years ago after the death of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, providing $12,500 plus professional mentoring through the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) to two senior UF students pursuing careers in equine medicine and surgery. Gulfstream also provides a $5,000 Barbaro Research Award to a UF veterinary graduate student.

This year's DVM student awards went to Megan Lamb and Erica Rosen, and the graduate-student award to Astrid Grosche.

Lamb, a graduate of Colgate University, has been a member of UF's student chapter of AAEP and the UF colic team. After graduation, she plans to work toward board certification in equine surgery or medicine. Rosen, a Cornell University graduate, plans a career in sport horse medicine focusing on lameness, diagnostic imaging and surgery. Grosche, a board-certified internist in large-animal medicine, received her veterinary degree from Leipzig University in Germany. Her current research is on the role of inflammation in mucosal damage and restitution of the equine colon during ischemia and reperfusion.

Gulfstream Park, in Hallandale, Fla., is one of a group of racetracks owned by Magna Entertainment Corp.

[note from CJ - All Magna-owned tracks have no tolerance antislaughter policies in place.]

WOW! Did you notice this in the BloodHorse article about the Derby museum's tribute to Barbaro?

"Guests will also be able to record their thoughts about Barbaro in a video booth. The digital sentiments will then be posted on youtube.com."

With all the FOBs in attendance, they will definitely need more than ONE video booth...

Hiya, FsOB! Gosh, how I wish that I could be in Louisville next weekend to see the statue's unveiling and meet so many of you in person. If only I could....

Thanks to CJ for posting the wonderful story about Gulfstream's Barbaro Award recipients. So much good has come from Barbaro's all too brief life, hasn't it?

May Governor Scweitzer veto that legislation that came back to him unamended. I am hopeful that this will give him justification to exercise a veto. I am off work tomorrow (yippee, boy do I need a day off) and I can call Montana's office of the governor.

    Wishing everyone ACN. Peace, RMH

    #### To Marg: Funny thing, I had an odd feeling that you were suggesting a gelding procedure for E.P. in NY!
To Debbie LA: Yes, can't you get a visual of E.P. shoveling "poop upon poop" while Joe S. quaffs a cup o' Peets coffee?
To Eileen: Thank you for asking about "Babynor", it is a relief to see that I am not alone in wondering how he's healing from the fractured ribs.
To Debbie LA: You are the best, checking the Mill Ridge site daily for any updates re. Babynor!
    To Janice: Welcome back here!
To Sandra: I missed seeing a post from you today. Please know that Brent & I are keeping you in our thoughts. I wish you lived up here, I'd try to help watch Chief so that you could get some rest. Much love to you & Chief from all your pals up here in CT! ####
