    Barbaro Updates: 802

    updates are now here.

Update 4609: Nicanor completed his third half mile work since his first start, this morning: Faster Four for Nicanor.

Update 4608: I am now participating in Paulick Report's Paulick Derby Index (PDI), so I will be updating a Derby top ten list each week: PAULICK DERBY INDEX: FROM WORST TO...FOURTH.

And we now have our sixth entry for the ABR YouTube Contest. Please watch, forward and consider creating your own entry. Still many weeks left to participate!

Update 4607: Another chilly morning this morning at Oaklawn Park. But it is certainly not as cold as Fair Hill or Woodbine for sure! We had seven sets, five before the break and two after the break. Three of mine went to the gate for a little schooling. They each schooled nicely. My first set after the break I jogged back with Old Fashioned. I think. I chatted away with his rider. He is scheduled to run in the Rebel Stakes here in about 10 or 11 days. He looks happy! All in all a decent morning's work.

Update 4606: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update:

Jimmy Jerkins may have forgotten to nominate Quality Road to the Triple Crown, but the horse gave him a little reminder in his Fountain of Youth victory. However, without taking anything away from Quality Road, I'm not as convinced as I might be about what this race really means; Theregoesjojo's second-place finish was a reverse of the January allowance race in which he beat Quality Road, and many of the other horses in the race looked like sprinters who ran out of gas (even though it was a one-turn mile).

I was a bit disappointed by both Beethoven and Capt. Candyman Can's performances, but I'm not giving up entirely on them; I'm not sure I'd say the same for Taqarub or Break Water Edison at this point, although any horse can have an off day (consider Afleet Alex's Rebel debacle when he had a lung infection). Further tests will be done on Break Water Edison to see if there's a hard-to-find injury, while it seems Notonthesamepage will stick to mile races (once they get his bleeding problem under control).

Injury knocked Midshipman off the Derby trail over the weekend; while he may be back later in the year, it seems the only Unbridled's Song offspring left in the game at this point will be Old Fashioned. Or Silver City. Or Affirmatif. Or Dunkirk. Or...well, you get the idea.

Of course, there are some grey horses not sired by Unbridled's Song in the mix, strange as that may seem - and my favorite of them all is The Pamplemousse. While Val makes the very valid point that his easy victory in the Sham is no more than we should have expected (and I completely agree with that), I think the fact that he delivered on that in great style (and with consummate ease) says a lot. Add in some great human interest ingredients (Alex Solis, who has won essentially everything except the Derby, riding a horse his twenty-something son partially owns, an eccentric trainer who should probably lay off the sauce, and, frankly, one gorgeous horse) and you have a potent mix - I look forward to further video updates on Mary Forney's blog.

Granted, I still have the 'he's only run on synthetics' concern I had for Colonel John last year - but so far, I have a good feeling about this. The fact that the Breeders' Cup will be back at The Pamplemousse's home track of Santa Anita also means that he should be a serious threat come the fall if he stays healthy. In the meantime, I do hope he faces off against the other non-Unbridled's Song grey I have an eye on - Stardom Bound - in the Santa Anita Derby.

Given the above, here are my votes for this week's Paulick Derby Index:

    1) Pioneerof the Nile
    2) The Pamplemousse
    3) Old Fashioned
    4) Friesan Fire
    5) Stardom Bound
    6) Chocolate candy
    7) Patena
    8) Quality Road
    9) Hello Broadway
    10) Capt. Candyman Can

Finally, a return to all things Santa Anita: next weekend is the Big Cap - check back later in the week for details on Einstein, Tiago, Colonel John, Champs Elysees, Zambezi Sun and more...

Update 4605: We now have our fifth entry in the ABR YouTube Horse Slaughter Contest. Please review, comment and forward to friends. All PG 13 and very good.

Hiya, FsOB! Based on Alex's final blue-link from yesterday, may Manila rest in peace. I tried to open my side door (the one that steps out to the adjacent garage) last night and could barely do so because of snowpack. Brent estimated that we have between 12 - 14 inches of snow here on the banks of the Thames now. Argh!!! Wishing everyone a safe and warm day. Can I be first today? Hmmm, let's see!

    #### To Kathy in SC: I was relieved to see that you weren't one of the poor souls stuck on the freeway in SC.
    Welcome back to Jonna!

UPDATE MONDAY NIGHT... I am not able to write a journal for Tuesday morning. I am leaving early with friends to help move horses at another ranch to dryer land.

There are 5 very giving people who today saved the life of a neglected thoroughbred gelding. In one afternoon more than $400.00 was raised in a chat room. The gelding was owned by those who do mexican rodeo. He is now safe on our ranch.

And we were given front row seats to a Britney Spears concert. Two tickets, so close to the stage Britney will no doubt drip sweat on you. In the near future I am giving these tickets away. Another e-mail contest is not wise. Not long ago I asked readers to send in names for future horses, and I actually heard the AOL voice moan. So maybe a phone contest for the two tickets. Several ideas to ponder. Always liked that word... ponder.

I will be back early Wednesday morning to share with you life on a muddy horse ranch in Woodland.

    Joe

We appreciate when you send in pictures of horses adopted from our ranch.

Top Left: Just this weekend an older white gelding went to live with Katie. Here he is at his new home, and we are so very grateful to Katie.

Top Right: In 2005 Alex and her mom Kelly adopted a thoroughbred mare with a one month old filly by her side. They named the little filly Marie. 4 years later, and Alex had her graduation pictures taken with Marie. How cool is that?

Bottom Left: In 2006 Joanne came from Reno to adopt the pretty filly Ginny Annie. And here they are now.

Bottom Right: It is difficult to keep up with your requests. Impossible is a better word. But there have been dozens of requests from new readers to show this photo again. In December a family came to us and adopted the pregnant thoroughbred mare Zeeskite. Madison is 3, and Zee and Madison are now best friends forever.

Located in Northern California, TB Friends is dedicated to the rescue and placement of horses that have been abandoned or neglected. Usually these horses arrive from the race track. The horses obtained by TB Friends are often saved from a trip to rendering facilities in Mexico or Canada.

When possible TB Friends takes care to select horses well suited to make the transformation to riding mount or show horse. Our proximity to the bay area race tracks, along with the throwaway nature of the racing industry, unfortunately results in a situation where there are many horses in need of rescue, and therefore many horses from which to choose.

At TB Friends we manage to rescue about two hundred horses every year. When we place a horse there is no charge for the care that we provide them here at Shelton Farms. We only ask for the cost of a horse's rescue and transportation to the farm. For most horses this amounts to less than $1000 dollars.

Sadly, we can not save them all. We are limited by the number of horses that we can care for at any one time. However, as we find homes for the horses we have rescued, we replace them by rescuing others. For this reason we ask you to consider purchasing a horse from our farm. Not only are you likely to obtain a beautiful animal, but you will also help us to save more horses.

Alex...so cool you jogged back with Old Fashioned.

Very chilly here in Arkansas (27 degrees)this morning but by Friday they're predicting around 80 degrees for the high. It was so cold this morning that my kitteh Thomas crawled under the covers and went to the foot of the bed where he proceded to put four ice cold paws on my bare leg! His way of telling me to turn up the thermostat...very effective..lol.

#SUPERFECTA - I love your comments on The Pampelmousse - (A trainer who should lay off the sauce!!??)....it certainly IS quite a human interest story and I'm starting to find myself getting behind the Pamp Camp, if for no other reason than I'd love to see Alex SOlis finally win the Derby

It will be hard to root against Edgar, who I put money down on every year, but watching the Sham, the horse had such a beautiful stride and so relaxed and rhythmic and strong, he made the others look like gerbils.

    PRESS RELEASE FROM HSUS:

The Humane Society of the United States Urges Congress to Allow Wild Horses to “ROAM” Freely

WASHINGTON (March 3, 2009) – Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, testified before the U.S. National Parks, Forests and Public Lands Subcommittee Tuesday in support of a bill to restore the 34-year ban on the commercial sale and slaughter of America’s wild, free-roaming horses. The Restoring Our American Mustangs Act (H.R. 1018), introduced by House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., and National Parks, Forests and Public Lands Subcommittee Chairman Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., would prevent the wholesale killing of healthy wild horses. In the 110th Congress, similar legislation passed the U.S. House by more than a two-to-one margin with a vote of 277-137.

For more than 30 years, wild horses and burros had been protected from commercial sale and slaughter since the passage of the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. Yet, a midnight maneuver by former Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont. — in which he slipped a controversial rider into an omnibus spending bill — gutted these longstanding protections. In minutes, with no public review, these American icons were robbed of the shield they had been rightfully afforded for so long.

“H.R. 1018 will not only restore longstanding protections to wild horses and burros in the United States, but it will provide the Bureau of Land Management with the legislative support necessary to revolutionize the current wild horse and burro management program from one that is often inefficient, costly and cruel to one which is technologically advanced, cost-beneficial and humane,” said Pacelle. “Such an endeavor would be of great benefit not only to our treasured wild horse and burro populations, but also to the American taxpayer.”

H.R. 1018 removes outdated limits on areas where horses can roam freely, allowing the BLM to find additional, suitable acreage for these animals. Further, it strengthens the BLM's wild horse and burro adoption program, requires consistency and accuracy in the management of wild horse and burro herds and allows more public involvement in management decisions. In order to allow for populations of wild horses on the range, ROAM facilitates the creation of sanctuaries for wild horse and burro populations on public lands.

    Hi Gang.

Thanks for posting that, Nancy. I lived in Sheridan, WY years ago and did private nursing for a woman that owned a ranch, (gross understatement), just NW of Sheridan. The "ranch" calved thousands and thousands each year. The ranch spread out for miles and miles into Montana, and still, there was no room for wild equines.

Such a beautiful state. But I reject the attitude towards the wild ones. There's room for all of us on this planet. It saddens me that we even have to fight for this.

MARGIE - about 6 months ago I watched a fantastic show about the wild horses on the Documentary Channel. It featured, among others, FORMER top officials from the BLM.

And what I learned - no surprise - it that it's all about the almighty dollar! There is a fee paid to the BLM for each head of cattle than grazes on BLM lands...and, of course, the wild horses roam free (of charge). Add it up and it's painfully obviously why the wild horses are in danger...

Our priorities, imo, are so very screwed up!!!

    Another noteworthy press release:

Obama overturns Bush endangered species rule

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama on Tuesday overturned a last-minute Bush administration regulation that many environmentalists claim weakened the Endangered Species Act.

The regulation, issued a few weeks before George W. Bush left office, made it easier for federal agencies to skip consultations with government scientists before launching projects that could affect endangered wildlife.

By overturning the regulation, Obama said during an enthusiastic reception at the Interior Department, he had restored "the scientific process to its rightful place at the heart of the Endangered Species Act, a process undermined by past administrations."

Under the Bush administration rule, there was no need for a federal agency to consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or the National Marine Fisheries Services if that agency determined that no harm would come to an endangered species as a result of its project.

But the determination of what "no harm" meant rested with agency bureaucrats instead of scientists.

Obama issued a memorandum that effectively suspends the regulation while ordering a review to determine whether it promotes "the purposes of the [Endangered Species Act]."

"The work of scientists and experts in my administration, including right here in the Interior Department, will be respected," Obama said. "For more than three decades, the Endangered Species Act has successfully protected our nation's most threatened wildlife, and we should be looking for ways to improve it, not weaken it."

Environmental groups were quick to praise Obama's action.

"President Obama's announcement will allow [the Endangered Species Act] to do what it was intended: protect our nation's endangered plants and animals," said Andrew Wetzler, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council's Endangered Species Program.

"Reversing the Bush administration's midnight action will restore protections for our last wild places and species."

Obama also helped celebrate the 160th anniversary of the Interior Department on Tuesday.

"Throughout our history, there's been a tension between those who've sought to conserve our natural resources for the benefit of future generations and those who have sought to profit from these resources," he told department employees.

"But I'm here to tell you this is a false choice. With smart, sustainable policies, we can grow our economy today and preserve the environment for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren."

Edgar is too good to ride for idiot Dutrow. God Bless Edgar. I'm sick now.

Our beautiful Nicanor, he is so special those eyes remeind me so much of Barbaro.
The horse of my heart Hans, helped me this weekend. I think he knew I was in bad shape, he would hug me and nicker, rubbed his head on me I even get kisses now. What a wonderful soul he is!

Thank you dear ones for being here. I love you all!!!! ((((((((((((((FOB's))))))))))))))))))

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, thanks so much for posting the blue-link describing Nicanor's latest workout. It's nice that he is allowed to develop at his own speed. Any news whatsoever about La Ville Rouge? I am counting on Alex or any of you who are wise in equine physiology to reassure this human nurse that LVR and her foal are in no danger because of being "post dates" (as this would be described in a human pregnancy). While I am fully confident that the Jacksons have LVR well-monitored, I regret that I don't know how accurate equine foaling estimations are in terms of due date calculations. (Please forgive me for sounding like a wonky nurse but when I don't understand something about the physiology and care of other species, then I ask what may seem to be silly questions to those who are in the know.) May LVR and everyone here have "ACN".

I sure wish that I could join all of you in person in KY during the last weekend in April. Peace, RMH

    #### To Julia B: Is there a mailing address or telephone # for the florist in Louisville which will make the arrangement for Barbaro's unveiling? (I admit to having forgetten which florist in Louisville makes the rose garland form the KY Derby. Why am I thinking that it was either Kingsley Walker Florist or else Nanz-Kraft?) Can you post that info here? I sent an e-mail to you last weekend, but worry that you didn't receive it. I would like to make a contribution toward Bobbey's rose garland.
To Janice, actually, I was able to go to work today. My coworker's car was repaired and he drove. But the State of CT did such a good job of snow clearance after yesterday's storm that I could've driven on my own.
To Jonna, may I say welcome back one more time?
To Sandra and Margie: Nikita keeps wanting to go out into her portion of the backyard to romp. She wants me to pitch small handfuls of snow at her. I say to her, "Are you a snow monster?" and she darts back and forth. Don't worry, the snow is very light and powdery. Seeing how much she's enjoying the snow made me think of Lucky and Chief. I hope that they and Monkey are having a good week. ####

Alex, if you are here, I would like your input. We were talking about slaughter at the rescue, the shape of horses and meds along with other things they take in, so the meat is not clean.

How can these horses be slaughtered and eaten, if they have meds in them, that will come out in the meat? I was told on the label it says something about causing cancer. Can you explain this?

I don't care what happens, they should be very careful what they put in their mouths, it may come back and bite them.

I saw the video of The Pamplemousse in the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita, and his fluid stride, and his running style is something beautiful to see. I hope they make the Kentucky Derby. I will be rooting for both of them if they do!

That was a great work-out for Nicanor too. He is getting better and better. I pray he will stay safe and sound.

    Love to all,
