    Barbaro Updates: 790

    updates are now here.

Update 4559: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update (birthday edition):

Old Fashioned lived up to his hype in the Southwest yesterday; his win was nothing short of thoroughly professional. He did not seem fazed by his layoff prior to the race nor the tougher competition - it's easy to see why he'll be the Derby favorite in the next future wager pool. Of course, there's always the concern lurking in the background that things did not turn out so well with owner Rick Porter's other two grey stars by Unbridled's Song (Rockport Harbor, who never really seemed to recover from the injury he sustained in his Remsen victory, and of course the ill-fated Eight Belles), but if he stays sound, this could be an exciting year.

Also yesterday, Evita Argentina beat the boys in the San Vincente in great style. She reminded me very much of Megahertz in her last-to-first move - I'd love to see her follow a similar career path (although as an aside, I wonder why Megahertz is being bred stallions who are nearly a good two hands taller than she is - she's already living proof that a tiny horse can be a strong, solid winner - but I digress). Evita Argentina was the first filly to win the race since 1947 - I'm hoping to see her in more sprints down the line, although it sounds as though her next start, possibly in the Fair Grounds Oaks, would aim for more distance.

Over the weekend, Chocolate Candy had no real trouble in the El Camino Real; the Jenny Craig-owned (and bred) son of Candy Ride will likely head to Santa Anita next, and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer seems to be taking a pleasingly old-school approach with him:

"We want to run in the Santa Anita Derby but we'll also look at the San Felipe Stakes," said Hollendorfer. "There are different approaches to the Kentucky Derby, but I think the fitter the horse, the better his chance to win. A lot of people go in there with fewer races but most horses that do well have a foundation under them."
Chocolate Candy's win earned him a Beyer of 90 (so he's got a ways to go to get into the Old Fashioned eschelon), but that was encouraging, given that now-4-year-old El Gato Malo only managed an 85 in his win in the McCann's Mojave on the same card.

Sticking with last weekend, Santa Teresita managed to defeat Leah's Secret and Visit in the Santa Maria Handicap - while there was some trouble in the gate when Country Star sat down in it (she was uninjured, but scratched) which may have thrown everyone else off their game, it's still nice to see Santa Teresita get a win in this sort of company.

Alas, the same cannot be said for poor Brass Hat, who finished eighth in the Dust Commander - perhaps it is time for retirement, but he's bounced back from down times before. I'd like to see him take another shot first if he's healthy and sound before heading out to pasture.

And with that, I'll head off to continue my birthday celebrations, which chiefly include searching for a 19th-century photo that may not exist and working on other reference requests - it's all good!

Update 4558: Five sets this morning at Oaklawn Park, so an easy morning's work. And all mine galloped nicely. Which was good after a long weekend of races. Today is a day to chill out and relax a little I think.

Update 4557: Media report of Old Fashioned's win yesterday here at Oaklawn Park: Southwest Suits Old Fashioned.

Here is the weekly e-mail sent out this morning to the ABR Facebook Group: Rachel Alexandra, Ballymore Lady, Old Fashioned, Voorhees Ballad, Gloriously, Sleuse, Stage Colony, Nicanor, Desert Honey Cup, Essay, YouTube Contest, and Easy Grades.

    And please keep calling.

Hiya, FsOB! Great blue-link about Old Fashioned, Alex! Can someone please clarify for me whether Old Fashioned is a grey horse? The colours on his face are most unusual. I know that there are lots of folks here who love the greys! Please have a great day, everyone. Can I be first today? Let's see....

    #### Has anyone heard from Maribel this past week? I hope that Hans is doing well. ####

Kathy B and Robyn: Good morning, and thank you for the kind words. No, I am not the 'big' person here in SC, nor did I take my horse to a campaign stop. I am thinking that was Catherine someone-whos-last-name-slips-my-mind-right-now. I am the mother of Cooper, the 3 legged greyhound, and Sophie and Nick, the foals who are now 1 and approaching 1 year old, and 12 other horses including the laminitic Buck. There are sooo many FOBs sometimes it hard hard to keep us all straight!

Have a great day, and meet Zoey later today on EH.

    Old Fashioned pedigree

    #####
    Robyn Hoffmann
On his pedigree he is called Gray/Rone, his sire Unbridled's Song is a gray. And it looks like the gray color comes from his dam's side.
Think I spelled Roan wrong! Read somewhere gray's have more health problems than bay or other colors, Alex, are someone is this true?

Your Facebook entry says it well, Alex:

"Racing tries to build a fan base. Yet when these stars breakdown, there is only very inconsistent feedback on their status. Smart marketing dictates you are transparent with good news and bad news."

I hate not knowing. Even when we hear news and it is bad, at least we KNOW.

Anti Slaughter Issues: US - STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF FEB 16

Great news......as of the beginning of this week, we have 88 co-sponsors for HR503!!

Our goal for this week is to reach 100 co-sponsors. To achieve this goal, we will continue with the following plan. Please check back to this post daily. We will be removing names as they sign on to co-sponsor so this thread should be current every day.

The strategy now is to gain co-sponsors for HR 503, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2009. Please call upon your own Representatives if they have not yet co-sponsored HR 503. To find the current co-sponsors go to: www.thomas.gov and search by Bill number HR503. You can then click on co-sponsors. [note from CJ - there's a list of cosponsors of HR503 in my next post, which I will keep current on a daily basis.]

Once you have called your own Representative, the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR 6598 that have not yet signed on. Following is a list of these Representatives. As they co-sponsor, their name will be removed from this list.

Co-sponsors of 2008 Bill 6598 who have not yet signed to 2009 Bill HR503:

This list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation so they should be the easiest to approach without going into a lot of detail. We will be editing this list daily as people sign on.....so please check this post each day. And we will start a new thread with current lists each week.

Please Note: We have started a separate thread titled “State Action Needed”. Several States have introduced their own legislation to allow horse slaughter. These states need our help. to keep this from happening. Please pass the word!!

Feb. 17 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Listen for wisdom and instructions. If you do not, it will pass by the way a deer moves soundlessly over the woodland path. Listen for the inner voice that will never be the source of anything wrong.

Listen to how you use your own words. Words are seeds that plant a living garden or they are seeds that sprout weeds that are invasive.

Stop being down on yourself. No human being is perfect--least of all those who believe they are. Give yourself credit for what you have done right, and, even though that may seem like a miracle, you can do it again.

He (the president) can sit in his town and drink his wine, while you (Governor Harrison) and I will fight it out.

    *** For Jonna ***

Tuesday, February 17th... We were a mess after the Yolo fire in 2006. It was 1998 when three different times we were flooded. More than two feet of water in both barns. Last year strong winds cost us 4 trees. And the roof to our second barn blew all the way to Barstow.

But this is nuts. We have had solid winds and rain since Saturday night. The biggest mess ever. It has been at least 15 years since we ate at Taco Bell, but there was Taco Bell garbage floating in our yard. I think I saw a trout too. Field horses are soaked silly. The man on the radio is saying rain should stop later today. But another storm for this weekend.

Mud up to my giant nose.

Since it took 15 minutes to find the internet, I must quickly tell you about our friend Stephanie. A family had contacted Tbfriends asking if we could find new homes for their two thoroughbred geldings. Several months ago dad lost his job, and they struggle to make the mortgage payment. There are two kids in this family, and both ride their two thoroughbreds. Stephanie asked the dad, if hay and grain and a farrier is provided, can the kids keep their horses?

The dad said this would be an answer to his prayers.

In pouring rain Stephanie shows up with 15 bales of hay. 10 bags of grain. A farrier said he is happy to help, and this Thursday he will be there.

A letter in the regular mail from a reader of this website. The letter says please give a needy family this gift card to Costco.

The gift card to Costco was for $200.00. Stephanie and the two kids went shopping. To the generous reader of this website, thank you. Stephanie said at Costco the two kids were in shock. All of these groceries.

To the farrier who is giving his time to this family, thank you.

To Natalie, our friend in San Francisco, both blankets fit perfectly. In January Natalie gave us two green horse blankets, and said maybe we know of someone who needs them. The two thoroughbreds are now warm and cozy.

To a very generous member of Friends of Tbfriends, the 10 bales of alfalfa has been paid for. Thank you. Delivery to this family will take place when there is room. The 15 bales from Stephanie use up most of their garage.

Enjoy your flooded Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. There is good all over. We know this for sure.

    Joe

Windy today in Lubbock. Wind gusts up to 60 MPH. Chief can hardly walk across the back yard as he goes forward 3 steps and back 3 steps. He has to go out often. He is probably thinking , 'danged Lasix'.

    Hi Gang.

60 mph winds here also. Dogs with ears flying high in the wind.

A "feel-good" story from NBC CT news:

Foal Gets New Name, Donations After Icy Plunge; People offer money, name for rescued Goshen Foal
    By SCOTT BEAULIEU

Volunteer firefighters rescued the horse, named Smoky until it fell through a beaver hole and went through the ice at Goshen Pond.

From expressions of concern, to possible names and even modest amounts of money, a Goshen woman is thanking people who came forward after her horse and husband fell through the ice last month.

Kim Garcia said she thought she might lose her husband Robert after their quarter horse fell through an icy pond near a Newcomb Road farm in January. Robert tried to save the horse, but ended up falling in himself. Rescue crews were able to pull both horse and man safely from the water.

In the weeks since, Kim Garcia has received many letters from people offering everything from their love, to names for the horse and modest amounts of money.

Garcia told the Register Citizen that she wants to use the money to run a shelter to care for unwanted horses and is looking to receive a certified nonprofit designation.

The Garcias have decided to name the horse "Gracious Bailey."

The name "Gracious" comes from one family who wrote them a letter, and "Bailey" is in honor of Jimmy Stewart's character from "It's a Wonderful Life."
