Barbaro Updates: 749

updates are now here.

Update 4322: Paulick Report has an excellent interview with Madelaine Pickens. The entire second half of the article is an indictment on the inaction of the thoroughbred industry to end horse slaughter: MADELEINE PICKENS: A PLAN FOR ALL HORSES, it ends:

But then she confessed to another reason, something that haunted her when she first learned about the horrors of slaughter: "Maybe it's because I'm ashamed that I was in the industry for years and never knew there was a slaughterhouse for so many horses at the end of the day. I'm so ashamed I never knew. And people who know about it and aren't doing anything, they should be ashamed, too."

Update 4321: A busier morning this morning for me at Woodbine. I had seven sets for Steve, two of which went to the gate after the break for a little schooling. All galloped nicely. My last one did prop a little at a grey pony that was hanging out in the middle of the track. And then as I was jogging back after the gallop another horse bolted away from the pony and nearly ran me over! Something about that pony! I also got on the one extra horse for another trainer I have been riding lately when I was finished. She also went nicely. Fewer and fewer people are here. Everyone is preparing for the last weekend of racing and packing up. Christmas wishes are being offered. Kira, an exercise rider for Reade Baker, mentioned this morning that she had signed up for our facebook group. Very cool. I will miss Woodbine when I leave.

Update 4320: We now have a Facebook group for Alex Brown Racing to complement this site, the discussion board and the wiki. This group will hopefully help us strengthen our connections to the community while also reaching out to new people interested in the welfare of the horse and horse racing. If you are on facebook, please check it out!

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I am eager to hear where you'll be wintering this season. I am running late, but is it possible that I'll be the first poster today? Hmm, let's see....

#### To Margie in NM: I read your post from yesterday evening with sadness. I hope that Lucky had a comfortable night and that he rebounds today.
To Jane, thanks for your kind note last night. ####

Good Morning,

This is sad and disturbing: 30 pregnant mini-mares need homes/help!!!

"We have received notice of 30 mini mares in foal that are on a broker lot and need homes. We can take 5 at AC4H at this time and do their qt there. We have pics of several of the minis if anyone is interested in a mini mare in foal. There are all types, sizes, and colors and some are registered as well. Please inquire if interested. Cost is $400/mini. Paypal fees will be $12, so $412 needed for each mare in foal.

"Can we pull the first mini? If this one gets a home we will pull another one. I have copied the first 5 below (as we can take 5).

"$412 needed for mini #1. All donations are tax deductable and donation options can be seen by going to www.ac4h.com then click on donation/payment options. Please let us know if you decide to donate so we can keep the tally accurate."

ON DB: PLEASE SEE "AC4H-help save mini's in foal"

Good Wednesday morning FOBs

So much sadness and loss lately. As part of the FOB family - we all hurt. When one gets a cut, we all bleed.

I hope today is a better day.

Goodmorning to ALL...

At 8am this morning Hans will be having anesthetic to do a procedure where they are going to put a scope down his throat to see if they can figure out why he has problems swallowing.

Normally I wouldn't be concerned but....can his heart tolerate the anesthetic??? The MIBI test that they did at UBC Hospital said his heart was OK. SO...why does he feel so terrible???

WHY did he almost pass out on last Tuesday while we were shopping and I had to call 911 and the ambulance took him to emergency?? WHY does the nytro spray seem to work???

Still no date for the prostate surgery...

I AM VERY WORRIED....please think of US this morning and offer a little pray when you can???

I love you ALL...wish you were here ???

Posted by: Maribel at December 3, 2008 2:33 PM

Maribel, I shall keep you and Hans in my daily prayers. May God bless you both.

Maribel you and Hans are always in my prayers and thoughts. Prayers also for the doctor's who are doing the anesthetic and procedure.

JOE: WEDNESDAY: THANK YOU GOD FOR JOE AND CATHY AND THEIR APPRENTICE ANGELS
**************************************************
Wednesday, December 3rd... Tuesday, December 2nd will be remembered as Bad Tuesday. Another large ranch phones to say they are out of business. All their horses must go. A small ranch phones to say they are out of business. All their horses must go. There were 4 calls from private homes asking if Tbfriends could come get their horses. A barn in Petaluma wants us to take two geldings, abandoned by a non paying boarder. A barn in Elk Grove wants us to take a mare, abandoned by a non paying boarder. A father and daughter at our front gate, begging us to take their gelding. And a phone call last night from horse killer Manny Phelps. He has two off the track thoroughbreds, and both are injured.

It is the two injured thoroughbreds which keep me awake. Not that any single horse is more important than the next. But just imagine. You are groomed and pampered. Treated like a million bucks. And in a race at Golden Gate Fields you hurt yourself. The next day you are standing at a feed lot in Wilton. A week from now in Canada you are butchered alive. You would think racing fans would wonder what happened to you? But not really. There was a day last week at Golden Gate Fields when there was no one in the stands. Not one spectator. Cold and foggy. Like a ghost town.

Below are pictures of 4 race horses who came to us with many problems. But now they are healthy and happy. All 4 are available for adoption. All 4 love to be with humans.

In our fields there is over 7 million dollars in earnings. Often I go outside to see if famous race horses dropped any of their money. You never know...

A big giant Thank You to a barn in Morgan Hill for taking two sight unseen thoroughbreds from a ranch foreclosure.

A big giant Thank You to a riding instructor in Davis for helping little Alice. There is no money for riding lessons, but Alice wants so badly to be with horses. A done deal. Not only does Alice receive free riding lessons, she also helps with grooming and scooping poop. The stuff dreams are made of.

A big giant Thank You to Jodi for helping with our gray filly Summer In Winter. We call her Winter, and her back is sore.

A big giant Thank You to Heather for accepting a sight unseen gelding into her life. Heather has named him Foxy, and next spring he will be sent to Jodi for breaking.

more to come

Lord...help us...show us the way...to stop this nightmare called horse slaughter.

To help our family Lord...those who are suffering a loss, a job, or you Lord know the circumstances.

Lord...give us strength, courage, and the will to win this battle...to save your beautiful creatures called The Horse..

Amen

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at December 3, 2008 3:08 PM

I have a heart of concrete.
I can thank Barbaro for this.
I looked at the Animals Angel's newest
expose of the
travesty of transporting
horses to slaughter.

All this agony: before
they are slaughtered alive.
Just a little
horse killer foreplay.

This is the next tape
we will tie the Congress down
and make them watch.

I want these images ingrained
in their heads too.
I want them to be sickened
at the condition of the human
race who profits from this
OBSCENITY.

I won't describe the images.
But I will say that even in
the direst of circumstances,
they are still horses.

Formed of the breath of God.
They are still noble. Beautiful.
Obedient. Willing.

Unless they are already
among the fortunate dead.
Death is better than
what many of the pictures detail.

This must be our year.
We must do whatever it takes
to take this obscene, rank,
pitiless and heinous industry
off our roads.

Tear down the feedlots.
We must prop each other up.
Some will be strong.
Some will be terrified.
Some will never look at
another picture of a horse
on it's way to slaughter.
We need EVERYONE.

I get it.
DR. R.: I GET IT.
If not us, then who.
We have to make this stop.
We must witness for
these creatures of whom
Joe writes this morning:

"It is the two injured thoroughbreds which keep me awake. But not really."

Joe's concrete heart still beats.
It still sorrows. It still teaches,
and saves, and pities. I can follow
him through the fog.

Joe going to Manny's feedlot
to groom horses awaiting the meat truck--
horses he could not take home--

That image will always be with me.
Along with the Animal Angel's
documentation of broken horses
on their way to death in MX or CN.

Please help us.
The 111th Congress is awaiting
its debut.
And they have terrible issue
with which to deal.

But I think--I know--that we have
a human being in the White House,
for the first time in decades.

I daily offer prayer to God
for his family's safety.
For his safety.
For him to have the courage
to keep his promises.

This is the year we will be heard.
God has seasoned us all this time.
We will be Barbaro Warriors.
We are ready. We are armed.
It is time.

The greatest leaders are those who lead not only with their words and ideas. The greatest leaders are those who lead primarily by their example. The most effective form of leadership is born out of the sincere desire and proven ability to make a positive contribution.

Those who lead best are those for whom leadership itself is not the primary aim. Those who lead best are those who can inspire others to embrace the positive values and priorities by which they themselves live.

True leadership comes not from position but from participation and effectiveness. Those who are willing and able to get things done are best suited to lead. To be a leader, be a shining example. Do that which you would lead others to do, and do it spectacularly. Leadership at its best enlarges and duplicates the efforts of the leader. Make those efforts the best they can be, and they'll result in true, effective leadership.

FAMBLEE! please read the db...alot going on....

those precious 8 that were saved...needs money to get home...safe and sound...beautiful pictures to win...etc.

we have the mini horses..in foal...that need help....

and then there are the 65 tbs...that need help...

and then two beauties...need help...

PLEASE...IT SOUNDS OVERWHELMING...but we can make a difference...and a dollar goes a long ways....even pennies, nickels, and dimes...

times are tough...and even tougher for our horses.

Posted by: joan roya at December 3, 2008 4:11 PM

Regarding the 65 TB's:

Dear friends,

There is a HUGE dispersal auction of property, machinery, trailers, trucks, tack, and HORSES this Saturday in downstate Mt. Vernon, IL.

There are 65 head of Thoroughbred horses being offered for sale of varying ages. You can download the flyer here www.hammondauction.info (click on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008) and you can download the pedigree's etc by clicking the "horse info" tab at the top of the home page.

There is NO minimum bid reserved on the horses, and Im told that the sale will be well attended by "kill-buyers."

I will be there on behalf of the ILEHC, however, our rescue is NOT in the business of purchasing horses, so we are looking for other "creative" ways to help any of the horses who may be at risk of being sold to slaughter.

We are asking everyone to do their level best to network the information about this sale to all of their friends, families, and contacts. The more legitimate buyers present --the better the chance that these horses will go to good homes. So please...everyone, spread the word far and wide.

We are also asking anyone that can afford to purchase a horse and foster it for awhile to please do so. The ILEHC will work on your behalf to place the horses into suitable adoptive homes as quickly as possible.

Finally, we do have some room at the Center, so if anyone would like to purchase a horse and donate it to the ILEHC, please let me know. Donations to care for the horses at the ILEHC can be made online through our website www.ilehc.org or directly to our paypal account at info@ilehc.org or by mailing a check to:

Illinois Equine Humane Center, NFP
P.O. Box 4203
Rockford, IL 61110

If anyone attending the sale would like to meet up with me, my cell # is 815-761-4937.

Please crosspost this message far and wide!!

THE REST OF JOE FROM YESTERDAY AND TODAY:
***************************************************
A big giant Thank You to Jodi for helping with our gray filly Summer In Winter. We call her Winter, and her back is sore.

A big giant Thank You to Heather for accepting a sight unseen gelding into her life. Heather has named him Foxy, and next spring he will be sent to Jodi for breaking.

A big giant Thank You to our new best friend Kacie, who spotted a starving to death thoroughbred gelding in the fancy hills above Marin. The gelding was going to come to us, but instead has been accepted by a barn in Napa. The gelding has a racing tattoo which says he is 9. His owner truly believed old weeds were high in concentrated fat.

Tuesday, December 2nd. Bad Tuesday. A big ranch. A small ranch. Private homes. Feed lots. Father and daughter. More than 75 horses in serious trouble.

We are true optimists. The glass half full. But you have to wonder, when is this all going to end?

A party in the streets. If for one day the little phone stays quiet. No one asking if we can take their horse. Feed lots empty. Animal Control without starvations. A party so big we need to raise bail money. I will let you know. You can make your favorite dish.

The man on the radio is saying this crazy cold fog will burn off today. Sunshine. We might be a toasty 58 degrees. If you can help with an unwanted horse, my cell is 530-383-2120. Going to the well too often can dry up the well. But we gotta keep trying. Oh, and the Sacramento Kings really stink. Cathy and I are moving to Boston...

Joe

Posted by: jonna skehan at December 3, 2008 10:07 PM

Oh frens:
Bronchitis: not pneumonia--but frowns when Mary listened to the left lung. I shot off the table--well, as much as I was ABLE to shoot off the table, and went up front to collect (bless my Doc) many samples and a gazillion dollars of antibiotics and inhalers and all that.

Been sleeping sitting up for 4 nights, with Loretta touchingly taking up Jessie's nursemaid role by sleeping snugged up to the many pillow , and placing her slender little greyhound head atop my head and going to sleep like that.

When I come down with one of these respiratory things, Jessie--now Loretta--would actually make a low, subtle growl to keep interlopers away.

How we love our companions...I thank God each day I hear that Chief and all the rest have had ACN.
How is Darcy?

Hugs to all. I lost a dear, dear friend of over 25 years on the 22nd. He would always call after a gamma knife surgery, or chemo or radiation or then the invasive surgeries. Always light-hearted. Always my sexy, crazy, hilarious so easy on the eyes Chip.

Hid best friend at Colorado Springs returned my calls the other night to say that we had lost him to an obscene last round of cancers. I believe the term people use is "riddled with----"

His SO was jealous of our long and loving friendship. To the extent that She had the balls to demand that Chip ask me to not use his cell to call. Chip was a corn-fed, Nebraska raised hunk, and loyal to a fault to all three wives and then this person, Judy.

But I was always there for him, and he for me. And I feel that unreal, dismal, wretched dawning of the reality that I will never again hear his drawling, deep voice and great laughter.

So it's been a pretty sucky couple of months. I'm leaning on yole a little...I already cried and leaned on Lynne...my sister fren in the West Wing, who carries her own sorrow for Murphy every day, every hour.

Chip (his given name was Ralph, hence the REAL name) loved the work we were doing with the horses. His Dad had drafts on the Nebraska farm his brother now runs. And of course, the Greyhound rescue. He was my guy. His last name was--is--Dreamer. So perfect.

38 degrees with a wind chill factor of 20 today here in West Texas. My old house seeps cold air in. Chief is on 3 lasix a day so has to go out every little while which lets more cold air in. I have a big flannel throw I can put over me but today Chief has taken it over. And yole know what Chief wants is what Chief gets now. He is rolled up in it now. I could maybe share it with him but with my arthitic knee I couldnt get up.

Maribel and Hans,

God bless you guys...so far, so good!!!

Have a wonderful, peaceful evening.

jonna, very sorry about your friend. He sounds like a super great guy.
# as far as your bronchitis it can make you very mirsable. I found that Musinex helps so much. However, you understand I am not a doctor. If I was a doctor I wouldnt be living in this old house and driving a very old car. Still am grateful for what I have. Had to laugh about you bounding off the table. A while back when they were
x-raying my back for spinal stenosis I had an MRI and when they finished she said you can jump up now. Jump Up! My back was so stiff from laying there so long the tech. had to pull me up. Anyway, jonna, glad you dont have pneumonia.

yes! Mucinex! OOTC Meds! Holy God: I have no health insurance--well, me and 3,999,999 others, of course--and the doc wrote a script for 90 day supply of Singular. Didn't notice this. They rang it up. Holy God: $367. Sick, Sick, Sick.

If not for the Angel God put in my path, I could not have taken it home...my big bachelor angel, Roy. I am a very blessed woman.

BTW: You need to get a big BINKIE of your own. Our GH health List--The Circle of Grey--which advises and supports and loves and listens and hugs people going through greyhound health crisies, sends out a soft fleece blanket with the name of the hound and the date and the CoG logo embroidered on it to anyone who writes in abut their sick hound. I think this is the most wonderful idea I have ever heard of.

They also send a little rainbow (Dee!) ring and a special CoG lapel pin. Unconditional love and advice from people who will never say things like; "YOU SPENT WHAT ON YOUR DOG'S SURGERY???"

A whole lot like FoBs, imho.

Sandra: send me your snail mail, and we will send out something for you and Chief. It would make me happy to do this...so just email me at jonnagrey@twcny.rr.com.

So sorry you’re sick, Med's cost too much, people can't afford to be sick now of days.
So very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend Chip, he is in a much better place now and no longer in pain. So much sad news about our FOB's. It's all so depressing, sending prayers and love to you all!
Hope Chip meets my sister Dot, her laughter could light up a room.
Love

Jonna, am so very, very sorry for the loss of your friend Chip. As he lived here in CO, I'm sorry that I didn't get to meet him. What a great loss.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, goodness, I was really worried when I read what happened with that horse and the grey pony, you might've been trampled. As my late Mother would've said when I would inform her of any near-accidents: "My nerves!".

Wishing everyone here ACN. Peace, RMH

#### To Maribel: Very reassuring news about how Hans tolerated the scoping procedure!
To Barb: Awesome that 153 is featured in Equine "Hevvin".
To Margie: Yippee that Lucky had ACN, amy he have many more.
To Jane, I am hoping that Darcy has shown some improvement today. We're all here for you, Jane.
To Jonna, may that bronchitis resolve quickly. Have you tried to contact the maker of Singulair by e-mail to see if you might get a discounted arrangement through the company's prescription drug program for uninsured people? Also, perhaps your PCP's office might have a starter kit? Wishing you ACN, Jonna, please feel better soon. Please also know that I send sympathies to you as you are faced with the passing of your dear friend Chip. He must've been a great guy from your description of him.
To Sandra: Brent bought & installed some plastic treatments for the inside of the windows. He got them at Loews and they were relatively inexpensive. I was dubious but I must say that they really help, especially on our two front doors which face the river. You can imagine what it can be like in a house built in 1787 in New England. Thank goodness for pink blob! Please ask Chief nicely to share that binkie with you, Sandra. ####

Jonna, So very sorry for the loss of your friend, just so sad, thoughts and prayers are with you.

I visited Darcy today and she is literally skin and bones....I have decided, God willing, to bring her home tomorrow for a few hours to see her best friend, the himalayan, Kitten Girl, and to sleep in her favorite chair and try and feed her, although she would have none of it today. I will then send her to the Bridge later in the day unless a miracle happens. Thanks to all my FOB friends, you are such a help. Life is so hard sometimes, but somehow we make it through.

Jane, we will be thinking of you. This is going to be tough. Did you say she is a tortie? My "153" was a tortie and my new kitten, "Petunia" is also a tortie. I'm partial to them, and also calicos. However, our house has many different varieties of kitties, mostly because they are strays!

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky, AND 153, AND Petunia! at December 4, 2008 3:25 AM

Barb, Yes, Darcy is a longhaired tortie with a silken coat, black legs with lots of hair, and a beautiful orange stripe right up the middle of her nose......tortie's are hard to find, you are lucky you have had two....just the dearest cats.
