    Barbaro Updates: 751

    updates are now here.

Update 4329: Another leading trainer with a potential drug positive: PLETCHER CHARGED WITH BREEDERS' CUP PROCAINE POSITIVE.

Update 4328: This morning it was cold at Woodbine. Thankfully a little sunny, but cold nonetheless. And the horses do get more "energetic" in the cold weather. At least two of my horses did their level best to dump me. Mr. Rowdy bucked so hard and high coming home that he nearly pulled me straight over his head when I landed after the buck. Usually my hands come flying off the neckstrap during one of these moves and I have just enough balance left to stay where I need to be. This time my hands were literally stuck to the neckstrap (cold weather) and because of that I nearly landed the wrong side of his head! One more day to survive Rowdy and I think that will be a small feat for the meet! All in all I rode six today, and I survived. We have one more day of galloping.

Update 4327: It is that time of year, again! Time to vote: NTRA's Moment of the Year.

    Found on Paulick Report.

FOB's... There are a number of rescues trying to save 65 TB's from possible slaughter this Saturday. They will only buy the horses if they are bidding against a kill buyer. The rescues know who these people are. See the thread on the discussion board under Urgent - 65 TB's in Ill.

    Good morning, fellow Fans!

Just a short hello to all to let you know I'm still here. Work has me pretty busy but I hope to catch up on everything horse this weekend. My hat's off to those who rescue - what an achingly difficult but ultimately rewarding life it is. And, of course, prayers to all in need.

Thanks to Alex and all the mods for keeping our house clean!

    JOE. JOE. JOE.
    ####################################################
Thursday, December 4th... Lost our minds. Insanity. Hiding in the fog, mumbling to ourselves. We are accepting a whole bunch of horses. They were going to be slaughtered in Canada next week. All thoroughbreds, some young, some old. A trip to Walgreens today for a new bottle of Advil.

So instead of wondering what happens if we turn muddy, lets have some fun. We need names. I am no doubt asking for trouble. Usually I am 2 or 3 days behind on answering e-mails. Sometimes 2 or 3 years.

Send me two names for horses. A boy and a girl. There will be thousands and thousands of submissions (okay maybe not thousands, but a few hundred for sure) and there is no time to open them up.

In your subject line just put two names, and you can add nm if you want. I found out the other day nm stands for No Message, and that is so cool...

Do this by Friday (tomorrow) and there will be prizes. Judges are Simon Joe and Paula Cathy.

A few rules to live by. Do not submit the names Hank, Dakota, or Chester. How many horses named Dakota do we need? I can stand in my yard and yell Dakota, and 5 or 6 horses from our neighborhood will come running.

No names like Thunder, Star, Sky, or Jet. Be creative. Be romantic.

No names after real people. Like George Bush, or Madonna.

If there is a tie, earliest submissions win. If you do not win a prize, your names can still be used for 2009 horses.

We need to talk prizes. How about Cigar, and not the kind you light up. Breyer Cigar, never out of his box. Cigar was a famous race horse who won something like 558 races in a row. You could probably take Breyer Cigar to a hock store and receive $30.00 or so.

A brand new western saddle. So shiny you need sunglasses to mount.

A cute fancy english saddle, only used a few times by a little old lady from Pasadena.

Another english saddle, retailed for $300.00.

A Hallmark Seattle Slew plate, collectors edition, more than 20 years old. You could probably take this plate to a hock store and receive $50.00 or so.

More prizes include halters worn by famous race horses, and you will be told what horse.

    Send your entries to tbfriends@aol.com

All prizes are to be mailed out before Christmas. If you win I will hit Reply from your entry to ask your mailing address.

We need to begin with a starving older thoroughbred mare who came to us yesterday. I bought her from a feed lot in Pittsburgh. The old gal is in horrible condition. No way she would have stayed upright for the long trip to Canadian slaughter. By tomorrow I will give her a name, using one of your entries.

Enjoy your 56 degree Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. Still foggy. Fleetwood Mac on the oldies station...

    Joe

Everyone is doing a great job with this Sat. IL sale- come on guys, even if it is 5 dollars. Right now in this area- foals are selling anywhere from 35-50 dollars. We can rescue quite a few if we can raise the $ to feed them. WE are working on getting these guys donated for a tax deduction. Thanks for all the help! Jen

Dec 5 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

The Cherokee calls this month U Ski'Ya (the Snow Month). A dusting of snow softens the rustling of leaves and defines the edges of rocks and trees that are hidden in heavy foliage in other seasons. This is the quiet time, the sharp edge of winter adjusting to the land unto itself.

The woods would be gray if it were not for the blue mist that hangs like soft gauze drapery through every glen and cleft in the hills. Evergreens thrive in the soft leaf matted ravines, and cottonwoods stand stark against the dark woods.

When the winds lay down in the evening the horizon clears to show vivid colors and every window is gilded gold until the sun disappears and the blue hour comes. It is as quiet as when the earth was created--and then the owl calls.

I stand here upon this great plain with the broad sunlight pouring down upon it. We shall be brothers and friends for all our lives.

I've been offline all week - in phone contact with Deb 'just in case' - will post the other Cherokee Devotionals shortly - better late than never for timeless wisdom, eh wot!?!?!

Consumed by music/performance and pesky dental problem finally alleviated yesterday (WHAT A RELIEF!) and expecting to be back on daily duty just in time for our next foray.

Alex ! as I have said more than once before - you have an excellent seat! Bravo that you stayed on yet again. (I love having closecall stories to tell, don't you? - and especially being able to tell them - i.e., sentient and vertical!)

######## We had a whiteknuckle drive home to Hammond on the highway from Chicago after the show this past Sunday night, in the midst of the first 'real' Chicago snow of the season, in a van with a faulty defroster fan rendering the driver without peripheral vision - both other family vehicles temporarily 'out of commission' - hard to stay an atheist on a drive like that - haha -

what's that fallen rider's prayer - 'Twixt stirrup and ground, Mercy I sought and mercy I found . . .'

OK HERE'S JOE FOR PEOPLES WHO SHOULD DRAG THEIR SICK-AS-A-ADOG BUTTS BACK TO BED. THANKS FOR THE BLULINKS, DEB. IT IS FRIDAY, RIGHT?
    *****************************************************
Friday, December 5th... An e-mail from Dakota Jennings, she is 14, and lives in Arizona. Dakota writes: So Joe, what exactly is wrong with the name Dakota?

    Oooops...

This is so much fun. I should have done this a long time ago. Right at this moment, 1,426 entries. More than 3,000 names for horses.

If you count horses from ranch foreclosures, partial ranch reductions, feed lots, and adoptions from our ranch, Tbfriends has found new homes for 577 horses in 2008. We are hoping to reach 600. We have given the majority of those 577 names. Some we have helped new owners with names. Talk about reaching into the bottom of the barrel. A rescued gelding from a ranch foreclosure, and we named him Scrimp.

But thanks to you, our readers, we now have more than 3,000 names to play with.

Several of you submitted the name Bling. How come I never thought of Bling? I love that name. Bling has become the new name for a starving to death older mare we bought from a feed lot on Wednesday.

catching up with the Cherokee Devotionals emailed by Harriette Brillianthawk, from the days this past week when I failed to post:

    Dec 2 Cherokee Devotional

Some of our greatest victories come when they are least expected and from sources that we have the least faith in. If the most beat-down person keeps the faith and moves ahead just as though he has written a contract with success, he will, even to his own amazement, come out a winner!

Most people think there's not a chance of success without great publicity and promotion--and the right connections. But the best connections are spiritually motivated by faith and caring that far overshadow puny human efforts. The will to win is important--but the Almighty Hand never has a failure.

The Great Spirit whispers in my ear!

    Dec. 3 Cherokee Devotional

Much has grieved us, we cannot deny it. Strong as we are, believing as we do, we are still grieved, and we must overcome it.

To stop grieving does not mean we no longer care, but that we cannot let this emotion consume us when we need a steady hand and a firm step. It will creep back in unlikely moments to make us cry but time will replace the pain with happy memories.

Once we have a flicker of light we can know that grieving is at an end. It can no longer take our whole thought because we have things to do, places to go, and a life to live. This is the time.

He orders all things, and He has given us a fine day.

    Dec. 4 Cherokee Devotional

Early December has rich earthly color that stands for strength and durability. Hundred year old oaks stand guard over a multitude of younger growth and bear the brunt of cold winds and heavy snows. The little creeks hollow out from rushing waters and refill with sand and stones washed down from the hills.

Everywhere are signs of longevity and power. Huge boulders tilted on end or covered by moss and lichen harbor the fox and possum. Regardless of how cultivated the land may be in one season, it returns to nature in another. No time shows nature's raw strength like winter---and few things have to be hardier than people.

The Great Spirit and giver of light....has made the earth and everything in it...

sharing email update from Old Friends - RIP Flying Pidgeon - bittersweet news - sure beats the alternatives - sounds like a good death to me.

Dec. 5, 2008: Flying Pidgeon, winner of the Grade One Hollywood Invitational and member of the Calder Hall of Fame, was humanely euthanized this morning at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement in Georgetown, Kentucky due to the infirmaties of old age. The 27-year-old son of Upper Case out of Miss Minnesota was retired to Old Friends by Jane White and the Flying Pidgeon Syndicate in October, 2006.

Flying Pidgeon won or placed 23 stakes, 18 of them graded, in 56 lifetime starts and earned $1,154,337.

"Yesterday, Flying Pidgeon was resting in the late afternoon sun," said Old Friends founder, Michael Blowen. "When we went to put him up for the night, he wouldn't get up. Within minutes, Dr. Doug Byars was here administering steroids to help the old guy. By this morning it was clear that Pidge was telling us it was his time."

A ceremony in his honor will take place at Old Friends in March.

Barbaro Memorial Fund distributes $90,801 for laminitis research

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced Friday that its subsidiary, NTRA Charities, has disbursed $90,801 in support of one new and two continuing equine medical research projects. The disbursements were made from the NTRA Charities - Barbaro Memorial Fund, established in memory of 2006 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Barbaro, who succumbed to laminitis, a disease of the hoof, in 2007. Funds for the studies will flow through the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

All three studies involve laminitis research. The new study, "Effect of Digital Hypothermia on Inflammatory Injury in Laminitis," by Dr. James Belknap of Ohio State University, is a two-year project funded for $82,109.

The two continuing projects are "Targeting 5-HT in Equine Laminitis," by Dr. Douglas Allen at University of Georgia and "Treatment of Equine Laminitis with Doxycycline," by Dr. Susan Eades at Louisiana State University. These two studies were funded with a $100,000 contribution from the Barbaro fund to the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation in 2007; an additional $8,692 completes the projects in 2008. Both projects are on schedule to produce research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The Barbaro Fund contributed an additional $60,000 in 2007 toward laminitis research projects and programs at the University of Pennsylvania, bringing its total disbursements to $250,801.

"We are proud that the NTRA Charities - Barbaro Memorial Fund is making this important laminitis research possible and we salute the Barbaro Memorial Fund's many contributors, who are collectively ensuring that Barbaro's legacy lives on in a tangible and essential way," said NTRA President and CEO Alex Waldrop, who is also the president of NTRA Charities.

A distinguished panel of equine veterinarians, assembled by the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation, evaluated several proposals before making final recommendations on the laminitis studies. The panel included Dr. Larry Bramlage, chairman of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation; Dr. Johnny Smith, the Foundation's veterinary consultant; racetrack practitioner Dr. Tom Brokken of the Teigland, Franklin, Brokken veterinary firm and a past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP); and Dr. Gary Lavin, a retired race track practitioner, past AAEP president, and vice-chairman of the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation.

once again striving for vertical movement, and there will Be no daNFriday, December 5th...

I am clicking down subject lines, and here are several creative names submitted: Ogden. Jailbird. Hotlips. Teak. Merlot. Bongo. Kamea. Peggy Sue. Aragorn. Boomer. Tudor. Coolness. Rivka. Fonzie. Tallula. Zeus. Hobo. Heathcliff. Sage. Sneak. Rudolph. Mateo. Reina. Misha. Zephr. Nevermore. Mr. Fabulous. Imani. Katmandu. Aedan. Rox. Kristie Rose. Sugar Daddy. Julius. Oberon. Zora. Weldon. Sybil. Benny. Vivi. Kearney. Capone. Morticia. Quinn. Aella. Maximus. Buttons. T-Rex. Shamrock. Calusa. Paragon. Vooshka.

A very honest person submitted this name: Could Have Been Sunday Pot Roast.

An old hippie friend from my younger days sent in this name: Weed.

A young girl who visits us often submitted this name: Big Nose.

Here are some more: Boden. Madrigal. Kamea. Homie. Cullen. Whisper. Guinevere. Amelie. Ophelia. Dimitri. Avaunt. Bolt.

A good friend who loves beer sent in this name: Happy Hour.

A good friend who cooks at a restaurant sent in this name: Chef.

A teenage girl who recently adopted a horse from us submitted: Be Still My Heart.

We are overloaded with horses. Shoulder to shoulder, hock to hock. On Sunday more horses come to us from race tracks.

While feeding in fields this morning it was so foggy we could hear horses but not see them. Weird. Later we might be 57 degrees. Hot coffee with just the right amount of praline cream is from Starbucks. Delicious orange juice from Simply Orange. A big Thank You to the person who left a young ladies winter coat at our front gate. The price tag still there, and you are way beyond generous. Thank you very much, who ever you are. Your coat goes to a young girl in Sacramento for Christmas.

And thank you all for helping us with names. We will use your names on 2009 horses. Enjoy your it is already Friday Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Stylistics on the oldies station...

    Joe

We have dozens of horses from race tracks who came with horrific injuries. Broken legs, broken ankles, ruptured tendons, damaged hocks. These horses have healed, and are available for adoption. They dance like Miley at Disneyland.med spelcheck.

The best part for OJ is the resounding sound of silence...no one to talk to, no attention what so ever - just the beat beat beat of his evil little heart and all those memories.

Windchill 20 degrees here today. Since Chief is on so much lasix have to keep letting him out every little while. I tell him to hurry as it will freeze his little pee-pee off. ###Wish O.J. had received life. Justice was a long time coming.

Please pray for my horse Zach - he's very sick. He has an inflamed, swollen throat and a high fever. He's at the vet's on iv's. I'm so scared - he's never been sick a day in his life. Please pray - he's only 16. Thanks and God bless.

Kate, I am praying for Zach and will continue. At least the poor boy has a good owner who will get him to the vet and medical care :>)
We are all with you during this, and I am praying that this is something the vet can treat and will be over with soon , so Zach can come home and eat apples and candy canes for Christmas. God bless,
