Barbaro Updates: 747

updates are now here.

Update 4315: Jen wraps up the weekend's racing at Woodbine and notes that voting for Soverign Awards concludes today: QUESTIONS - ANSWERS?.

A good article on Santa Anita's "No slaughter" policy (It is part of the Magna Group of racetracks) that includes quotes from thoroughbred adoption groups in the area: Track policy seeks to protect horses.

(Note, while horse slaughter is illegal in California, there is no doubt horses from California are sold through the auction and feedlot systems to states outside of California and then shipped to slaughter.)

Update 4314: A bit of a damp and dreary morning this morning at Woodbine. But that is better than the forecasted weather of plenty of snow! I think there was snow not too far north, but here it is well above freezing. I had six sets for Steve. A nice easy morning, although five of them galloped two miles, so I did put in the miles. I also got on an extra one for another trainer. A filly I had galloped a little bit a month or so ago. She also went nicely. The track is again quieter, people are moving out. There is one more week of racing and then the meet is over. South!

A nice double at Hollywood Park yesterday for Ramon Dominguez: Court Vision Rules in Hollywood Derby.

Update 4313: An excellent video that takes you inside OLEX, the kill auction in Kitchener Ontario. There are no gory details. Ellie Ross buys a thoroughbred from the kill pen: Horses for Slaughter.

I rode the horse that was purchased a week later (very quiet and calm) and she now has a loving home.

Hiya, FsOB! There were some incredibly moving poems posted late yesterday by Martita and Otherlyn, truly amazing treasures about Wanderin' Boy, Barbaro, and Eight Belles. If anyone might repost those here this morning, I am sure that these works would be greatly appreciated by all the daytime readers. Peace, RMH

#### To Sherry, I hope that your trek to NYC was memorable for the Macy's Parade on Thanksgiving Day. ####

Hay Famblee...

Prolly too late for the East Wing, but Today Show and Kerry Sanders will do a segment this morning about Cloud and his Wild Herd...in case you can set the DVR to record, or sit and watch.

Joan Roya..Gosh, what a nice idea you have this morning, Joan! In all honesty, though, I'm having a kinda difficult time this Season and for now at least, am unable to come up with anything 'wowie' to do:(

Hope everyone here has a great day...

Robyn H. I'll copy paste and re-post for you!

Lynne-Barbaro's Forever Friend in CA

Posted by: Lynne Brown at December 1, 2008 3:20 PM

at the request of Robyn Hoffman:

RIP WANDERIN'BOY. We watched you chase the wind...oh how you seemed to love it. Run, now, with the Young Prince, and all of his frens.

### Hay, Fren Sofie's Lee,

Your 'Thankful' post was lovely. We do indeed have a lot to be thankful for, especially when it comes to having known each other through one very special Big Bay Colt. The Love of the Frens has made the difference, in so many ways.

Now, I must say that I am thankful that there is a man, such as you, who has the courage and the heart to express such thoughtful poignancy.

I only know you here, through your words and your participation. We don't seem to have much of a male presence here, but the ones who do show up...You, Alex, Daryl, Gerry, the dedicated work of Joe, and the handful of others, do so indeed, seem to be real men...with the courage to express, profess,...with the courage to make a difference. There are plenty of 'guys' in this world, but very few MEN. I am thankful that we have you here.

Now, for your delight:

Only yesterday, as I raked the last leaves off my yard, the wind came up. It spoke a vision into my mind's eye.

Since Derby day, and beyond, BIG BROWN has not been able to shake free the trauma of having seen EIGHT BELLES fall. It has played on his mind and body. He has not been the same horse, of the same heart, since that fateful day.

His heart and hers were sharing the same song as they ran. They were enjoying the contest in the wind. Then he heard her, at last say, "Run On !" So...run he did. They finished, then he saw her go down.

A part of his own spirit went out of him, and ran back to her as she lay helpless on the ground. It could not help her. It stood, invisible to her in her pain. Then it dissolved into vapor as it tried to follow her up and out of thisotherplace.

Well, my Fren, a whisper of the vapor found its way into the wind. And in the wind runs a valiant bay stallion known in THISGOODPLACE as ARDOR. ARDOR has visited BIG BROWN in a dream. He has comforted the melancholy Brother-of-the-Roses, with a tale of his own filly Fren, who went down on the track. He told him of those very words..."Run On!" as the last words he heard in her heartsong.

Fren Lee, the story will be told. An account of the dream is forthcoming. It has already helped BIG BROWN. It might help many broken hearts here as well.

ARDOR's filly fren is your own beloved namesake.
It is obvious that your heart is with her. You have said that your heart is thankful for BARBARO too. Thank you for being one of us, Dear Fren.

They are only a thought away.

Your FOB Fren. O

## Hello All !! Robyn - thank you, always, for you attention to details ! The NYC Macy's parade was crowded beyond belief and all I could see were the HUGE balloons ...... anything walking ON the ground ...... could not see - too many folk ahead of me ! BUT - was glad to be there nevertheless, and I enjoyed many other special moments in NYC. Unfortunately, wasn't able to connect w/our Martita - and I regret that didn't work out - but - we talked !

JOAN - splendid ideas. The boarding facility where my beloved Warpaint and Dakota are boarded is having a garage sale for anyone interested on the 13th. I will haul plenty over there and plan on sales ...... and will have $$$ available for rescues !

And ....... just this morning on NBC (Today Show) there was going to be a "piece" on our mustangs and it was interrupted JUST as it was beginning ..... with more on the Obama press conference. I have been referred, by local NBC to the msnbc web site, BUT I do not see anything about mustangs listed. I have sent them an email asking that this segment be rescheduled. IF you wish to do so also ... the address is: today@msnbc.com

ALEX: From your post this morning:

"(Note, while horse slaughter is illegal in California, there is no doubt horses from California are sold through the auction and feedlot systems to states outside of California and then shipped to slaughter.)"

####
Alex:
As I think you know, all of Joe Shelton's over 122 or so residents at TB Friends outside of LA are from CA racetracks. Some come through kill buyers, some straight off the tracks.

And many, many, many get shipped to CN or MX for slaughter. I sure wish you two could meet. I think it would be an incandescent experience. And think how nice and warm CA is this time of year.

Dec 1 Cherokee Devotional

Happy Birthday to my husband's grandmother who is 98 years old today and still going strong!!!

Distant hills are blue-gray humps along the horizon and a blend of orange and purple sprays across the sky in extra long pointed fingers. Millions of bare trees limbs give the appearance of gray fur laid across the valley.

It is winter and the first snows have dusted the woodland and sparkle on the rocks and along the trickling stream. There is a quietness here, a muted sound of dogs barking and an owl tuning up for the evening.

Now is the time for honest reflection, time to leave the gritty and unseemly, to make a new beginning. Time is of the essence. Find the new path, raise the new hope, lift up your voice in thanksgiving. This is your opportunity.

I desire you would open and clear your eyes.

### Dear Fren, joan roya,

I do very much like your idea of listing 10 to 20 (or even more) rescues, to which we FOB may send Christmas greetings with a small gift or donation tucked inside.

I would hope that they would be rescues that are known and sanctioned here, as OK and legitimate. There are many rescues, big and small, to which we may confidently give.

A list would be most helpful. Perhaps 8 per week, as featured rescues, as well as a master list for we FOB to choose from.

8 is our Beloved's most renowned number. So,wouldn't it be nice to use it?

Thanks for the super idea! Count me in.

Your FOB Fren, O

Joan Roya:) I, too, like the idea very much of sending cards with donations inside for Christmas to rescues, Joan...and I'd like to name Safe Haven Horse Rescue and it's Owner, Linda Richards as one of those....:) I will certainly vouch for Linda and Safe Haven, as that is where 'my' *CHARLEY* lives....GREAT IDEA, JOAN...let me know where to send the mailing information, and I'll send it along.

Wendy:) So nice to hear from you this day, and if those genes are running your way, then YES:) do put 'extra' away for retirement:)

Hi Everyone,
I hope you all had a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving,it is cold and raw here in CT and more coming in.

We had a good weekend at the recue, one more beauty got adopted...Yipppppe! By a great volunteer. We have also gained more volunteers to help out,in winter people tend not to come as much as in the summer, so we are lucking out. Money is tight, and we say our prayers that they are heard, so we can continue our great work for the horses we care for and love.

I wanted to get word out early, that we are having our Christmas Card Contest again, to see which horse gets the most cards. We did hot peppermint mash last year for a week. I will have to update what the lucky winner gets ths year. I will add a some Stud Muffins, Nicker Makers and Peppermints to the winners stash from the FOB's personally. Here is the address to send the cards, donations always help. Thank you all! You are the BEST People anywhere. The SCR herd says Thanks FOB's we Love you all! Nicker nicker nicker!!!!

#### To CJ: I am ordering a copy of our dear FOB Harriette's book entitled "Rendering" to give to our local library. Today would have been my late Father's 74th birthday. He was simply mad about horseracing. Since moving to Groton, I give a horse-themed book to the library to mark my Dad's birthday and a gardening book to honour my late Mother's birthday.
To Harriette: I promise to let you know when your book gets on the shelves at the Bill Memorial Library. Maybe that will be the first library to have a copy?
To Sherry: NYC is a frenetic place, isn't it? I rarely achieve all that I set out to do when I take a day to go to "the City". Love that NYC!
To Lynne B.: Thanks for reposting Martita's poem and Otherlyn's post from last PM.
To Wendy: May your grandmother have an awesome 99th birthday celebration and an even better 100th next year!
To Wendy: I am afraid that there is an icky spam entry at 11:12 PM, date-stamped on 12/01/08.
To all who are young at heart: At 8:30 PM EST, "The Grinch Who Stole X-Mas" will be broadcast in honour of the 40th anniversary of its first showing in 1968.
To Lou Ann: I agree that your Mom will make it to 100! ####

If anyone can spare a little prayer for my cat Darcy it would be greatly appreciated. She is in kidney failure and I left her at the vet tonight for IV fluids but it does not look good. She is the dearest Tortoiseshell kitty with an orange line right up her nose. I adopted her in 1997, she was the only cat not taken home at the end of an adoption day at the shelter and she stole my heart and we have been inseperable ever since. She has been with me through divorce, a relationship breakup, financial crises and on and on and I love her dearly. I am still getting over the loss of my Lukas in October and not ready for another but the vet says her chances are slim. I don't want her to suffer. Thanks for any thoughts for her.

Alex...Transport of horses for slaughter has been illegal here in CA., for many years...sadly, there is no enforcement.

I wrote to our Senators about the law and it's lack of enforcement and was told we must get the law passed at the Federal level in order to see to it that the transport stops.

Jane
Prayers for your dear little kitteh Darcy. I had an Irish Wolfhound named Darcy. I have always loved that name. Prayers for you too. Such a deep love we feel for our companion animals. There is nothing like it.

I loved ready that Mary S slept behind Sherman in his stall upon his last night as an earthly presence. I sleep with my hounds all the time--and their predecessors--and they have pulled be through many terrible things.

We're here for you.

You know that I am not good at the geography of The West Wing. (Why do I remember Joe saying he got a lot of TBs from LA?)

Jonna...:) From visiting with our own Nancy Goss on the telephone, I am 'gobsmacked' at how small some of the East Wing states are, as she is 'gobsmacked' at how BIG CA is!!

Maybe Joe gets TB's from L.A. via Interstate 5, because the peeps down south know those kids will have a good home at Joe's...so they make the trip north, to Woodland...where the geese and ducks fly overhead on their way South, these days...it's a long flight for the waterfowl and a long ride for the horses, but there are plenty of 'rest stops' along the way for both:)

Part of the Yolo Causeway has been converted into a sort of 'haven' for the winged frens...Yolo Causeway separates Davis and other points west from Sacramento...and up north of Woodland there are LOTS of great places for the featherds to stop and rest and eat:) Farmland, lots of it, and bodies of water, too. Major 'flyway' around where Joe's Ranch is.

###Jane...my prayers and thoughts are with you tonight. Darcy is such a wonderful name. Torties are so beautiful and unique with their "coat of many colors." Hoping for a restful night for both of you...
