Barbaro Update: 748

updates are now here.

Update 4319: Today I went with April (who has been galloping for us for the last couple of weeks) to OLEX. Unfortunately we arrived after the sale was over due to a massive traffic jam on 401 West. As it turned out, that might not have been a bad thing as April was pretty traumatized by the experience of just seeing the horses (and cows) after the sale was over. Fortunately others were at the sale and bought a thoroughbred mare (Colebrook Queen) by outbidding two kill buyers. She went for 33 cents / pound (I think). I think she had been used in a riding program for a couple of years and had also been a broodmare. She is by El Prado. Meat prices topped out at about 30 cents / pound today, so the market was up over last week. Having three kill buyers at the auction will do that. Usual suspects, standard breds, belgians and so forth.

Update 4318: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

I spent most of the holiday weekend traveling up and down the Eastern seaboard, and as a result only got the news about Saturday's somber day at Aqueduct after the fact. I'd seen the Cigar Mile results in brief and saw a few 'what a shame' comments, but initially thought the shame was the difficult DQ situation between Harlem Rocker and Tale of Ekati (the eventual official winner) - and the fact that Wanderin Boy had finished at the back. Unable to really investigate at the time, I assumed initially it was going to be something of a throwout like his Woodward effort in 2007, or his earlier New Orleans Handicap last-place finish - no doubt he had another injury, but he'd be back again in good form, as ever.

Obviously, I was wrong.

If you have not already read Steve Haskin's response to Wanderin Boy's death, be sure you do; despite seemingly endless physical problems, the horse returned to the highest level of the sport again and again, and I can only agree with Haskin - it should not have ended the way it did. Having said that, horses can contrive to mortally injure themselves in the most benign settings, whether it be a stall or a field; given his soundness issues, it's probably for the best he never went to stud, but it would have been lovely to see him have a long, healthy retirement. I recommend these parting glances from Green but Game, Brooklyn Backstretch and Gathering the Wind; it's evident that Wanderin Boy will be missed.

Springside's injury in the Demoiselle does lead one to wonder what was in the water at Aqueduct that day; while the early word is that she came out of surgery well and is expected to recover, it's certainly jarring to see horses break down in two races on the same card. One hopes that lessons might be learned - whatever they might be.

As is so often the case in racing, Saturday's dark events were followed by a thrilling performance on Sunday, when Cocoa Beach overpowered the retiring Precious Kitten in the stretch in the Matriarch at Hollywood Park. And let us not forget that Friday was a good day as well - fan favorite Einstein won the Clark Handicap. He seems to be getting better and even more multi-dimensional with age; if the ongoing legal silliness surrounding him and former stablemate Curlin at least serves to keep him in training, it can't be all bad.

Finally, and not a moment too soon, the Holiday Classic returns at Post Parade! Don't miss out on this annual tradition...

Update 4317: Light snow, and a quiet track. I guess that's december at Woodbine. We had an easy morning this morning, with only four sets. All mine galloped nicely. I then went and got on one extra one, the same filly as yesterday. She also went nicely for a quick and easy morning. Now off to OLEX.

Update 4316: Springside, who fractured her right front pasturn galloping out after winning the grade 2 Demoiselle at Aqueduct in New York, is recovering from surgery: Springside Recovering After Surgery, excerpt:

"The surgery went very well," Jim Sapara told The Blood-Horse after talking with Richardson the afternoon of Dec. 1. "She walked back to her stall after they put her in the pool to wake up, and she was feeding at the time of the call.

"(Richardson) said barring any unknown major factors, she should be fine. It was a little worse than he thought it was, but the surgery went very well."

Thank you Equine Heaven. Good morning everyone.

Hiya, FsOB, and a hearty good morning to our first poster, Kathy in SC! Boy, did we ever have a wildy windy night here on the banks of the Thames last night after an unusually balmy day. Alex, thank you for the info about Springside's surgery at UPENN's NBC yesterday. Barbaro's own "Dr. Dean" Richardson came through for Springside. Wishing everyone a great Tuesday.

#### To Angel Dee, you are truly the resident Angel of the Barbaro Nation!
To Jane, my heart goes out to you. Darcy sounds like such a loving and singularly lovely cat. She has been such a good friend to you through tough times, as were Nikita's immediate predecessors, Illya & Pushinka, were for me. I am sorry that you facing this so soon after Lukas' passing. ####

Hay, FOB's!

###
Alex, thank you for the update on Springside...have been wondering how she was doing...prayers for her recovery.

###
For the Christmas cards....could we include Tierra Madre on the list of rescues to contribute???

The sun is shining here in Chester County today...last night there were black clouds blowing through here...had some hail, some rain, but then they moved on.

Have a great day...

Good morning All. I hope that we will be well and happy today...come what may. Be strong. Know that we are doing good in an all to often very cruel world.

###Fren Jane,

Your heart will know what to do for Darcy. You will know because she will tell you.

My own little torti, Goezer, with her golden-tail-tip, and magic-gold-toe, have been good frens for ten years. She too, was the last to be chosen. Torti's are very special little cats.
I understand the depth of you affection for Darcy.

Before adopting Goezer, I had to euthanize my beloved Peaches. Her kidney failure had come to the point where the sub-q fluids gave her no relief. She did, indeed, let me know that it was time. We both had Peace with it. Now, although she is in THISGOODPLACE, she is also still very much with me.

I learned a lot from what she experienced. I now know what precautions to take to insure that Goezer does not suffer the same maladies, for she too, is a strictly indoor cat.

You will both get through this, my Fren. Even this sad time is a rich part of the life and Love that you and Darcy have shared. The price of loving them is well worth it.

Darcy will always be with you. She KNOWS that she is loved.

Your FOB Fren, O

JOE FROM YESTERDAY: ALL KINDS OF DISTRACTIONS HERE:
****************************************************
Monday, December 1st... For five years in a row Tbfriends has helped kids during the holidays. No big deal really. Just a few kids, a few clothes, and a holiday feast for their family. Many of these kids are horse lovers. Many will never own a horse. They barely have money for people food, so horse food is out the window.

We also cook for a youth shelter and they are so grateful. Plus they never care if we experiment. I brag to everyone how we invented shrimp and artichoke pizza.

There is a team of delivery folks. They haul our horses, and on December 23rd and 24th they haul food and clothes. Lots of good cheer. Even toys for the kids.

You would think, with all the money problems brought by 2008, donations would be limited. But boy oh boy. The power of kids who love horses. It is addicting. And readers of Tbfriends have responded in amazing kindness. We now have more food and clothes than we do needy children.

Not that we are a Costco warehouse. But if you know of a kid in the Sacramento area this year who is going without, give me a call at 530-383-2120. Unless we are truly overwhelmed with requests, that kid will receive a delivery on December 23rd or 24th. You need to tell us what size clothes? How many in the family? Do they eat meat?

For gift cards to grocery stores, and clothes for kids, a big giant Thank You to Tori Baze. Brenda Hunter. Nicole Baines. Kelly Bonds. Susan Hall. Kelli Talbot. Jessica Talbot. Anna Wong. Kelly Howser. Megan Gunn. Holly McDonald. Jordyn Myers. Lupe Mendes. Casey Cox. The Grant Family. The Hopkins Family. The Wallace Family. The Wilson Family. First names only Dex & Trisha. Brian & Amber. Asking for their names not to be shown at all are 6 others.

For helping horses who need help, a big giant Thank You to Cheryl Dean and her 3rd grade class. Stephen & Linda Rei. Mary Sebers. Wendy Wainwright. Nikki. Keri. Jessica R. Jessica W. Tara. Jodi. Stephen & Berlin. Press & Rebecca.

From San Jose with horse things, including blankets, we Thank Angela, Carey and Mark.

A big giant Thank You to Laura Bielser in Reno. Kacie Adams in San Francisco. Jennifer. Becky. Larry8. FastTrackCarla. How you all came together to save the life of a horribly abused gelding from mexican rodeo.

A big giant Thank You to Georgia for giving up her Sunday to haul horses for us.

A big giant Thank You to a vet at the race track for all the medicine and supplies. You saved us a ton of money, and we are grateful.

Horses and Holidays, a celebration of all that matters most. Enjoy your first day of December, and be sure to hug your horses. Cold and foggy outside. Billy Joel on the oldies station...

Joe

Top Left: Yesterday morning the sun finally breaks through, and you can begin to see horses.

There were 4 adoptions on Saturday, including:

Top Right: Casey and Sara who take home the very sweet Seattle Dreaming.

Bottom Left: Liz who goes home with the very handsome Unusual Jail.

Bottom Right: It was love at first sight for Lexi and Adams Naughty Lady.

Morning, ABR Famblee:)

I want to leave the website here for Safe Haven Horse Rescue where *CHARLEY* has his 'forever home'...in case anyone of you might be interested in 'esplorin' the facility which Linda has here in no/ca...www.safehavenhorserescue.org

On the home page, she has pictures of a 'newby', named Fanthum, who is a mini...and he jumped into the backseat of the car for the ride to his new home:) So CUTE, Famblee!! :)

I got the newsletter last night, and it featured a story of another 'newby', 'Grandpa Hank'...he was turned loose to fend for himself and some hunters found him, he was, to say the very least, a SKINNY BOY when he arrived at Safe Haven, but now he's LOVING LIFE:) Linda and her volunteers do a WONDERFUL job up there in Cottonwood, CA!

I cannot remember if I posted y'day about the new page at www.equine-heaven.com...the 'family album' page has been re-done and it is just AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL...I have nick-named the Farm Manager "Amazing Grace" because of the lovely work she/they do to make 'nice' for us, the one's left behind. Go check it out if you have time!

Today's featured pet is *FUZZY*, a kitteh whose Mommy is our very own Kathy, SC...:)

OK, must ready myself for much zooming...I hope yole will be having a dine&fandy day today!

Murphy has been in Hevvin seven weeks today, Famblee...I am missing you, my Murphy Man...xxoo

All,

We are gearing up for the 111th Congress and we need your help NOW.

State leaders are going to need help. Hopefully we will all have a blog, linking to Americans Against Horse Slaughter. These state leaders can't be expected to do everything! If you have a state leader, please email him/her and let them know you can help.

Please check the WIKI page to see all the state leaders. If your state has a leader, please contact them NOW to see what you can do to help get ready for our work next year!

If your state doesn't have a state leader, NOW would be the time to volunteer! You will have lots of help, and it's not really that tough. If you want to volunteer, you can email me (I'm under AZ) or contact Deb or Shelley.

I think we added a new state leader for Rhode Island yesterday!

Let's gear up NOW and get ready to rock and roll !

To see the AZ Blog, just cick on my name at the bottom.

Thank you all again so much for prayers for my Darcy. Otherlyn, you do know the magic of Tortie's so often overlooked....such sweet temperaments. Does indoors mean they are more at risk for kidney problems? I visited her at the vet's today and brought her a catnip mouse. She seems brighter, but when I held her, she felt like skin and bones, so different from even 4 days ago. We will continue IV fluids another day and make a decision.

Hope all FOB's have a good day, what a wonderful site this is....good friends, good people, and all we have learned about our Beloved Horses, thanks to Barbaro.

JOE on TUESDAY:
*****************************************************
Tuesday, December 2nd... There was a little gray filly, only 9 months old, and I thought for sure she was going to die. We had until December 1st.

Those of you who read this website know we are clobbered daily with requests to take horses. On the phone a man from a thoroughbred breeding farm. The little gray filly spent the first few weeks of her life in a leg brace. Trying to correct her crooked stance. She will never be a race horse. The ranch was going to kill the filly and her mom. Also a younger mare, and a yearling colt. We had until yesterday to find all 4 new homes.

Both the mom and younger mare are pregnant, and were easy to place. Mom went to Pleasanton, and the younger mare is now living with a friend in San Jose. We paid for the yearling colt to be castrated, and he is now with a trainer friend in Santa Rosa.

The little gray filly no one wanted. Even when I said she is not a bit crooked. She dances like Britney. The first in the pasture to greet you. Still, who wants to feed a weanling for two years before she can be broke to ride? There are free riding horses on the internet. There are free riding horses from Tbfriends. A weanling is expensive. And time consuming.

On our ranch there is no place for a baby. We can not put her with older race horses. So on Sunday I told Cathy, we should go buy a small round pen. And when it rains we can toss an older thoroughbred from his stall so the filly can stay dry. The older thoroughbred can move to our mare motel. A horse in our mare motel can go to our fields. We are a juggling act.

I am not a huge believer in fate. I always think we make our own way. I remember we have $100.00 credit at Higbys Feed Store. A small round pen might be five or six hundred. Higbys delivers to us.

I am about ready to seal the deal, when a lady on my phone asks can we find her a weanling? She has a just weaned filly who is lonely. The two can grow up together. The lady is about an hour away, almost to San Francisco.

There might be something to this fate thing...

I call the man at the breeding farm. I tell him to cancel their vet. No need for euthanasia. I have a new home for his gray filly.

The man says what vet? A vet costs money. At their farm they use a rifle. Very inexpensive.

Oh swell.

The lady who wants a weanling sounds so nice on the phone. Yet I am thinking we should still check her out. But I am desperate. At this point I would allow The Unabomber to take home the little filly.

A big Thank You to Kacie who lives in San Francisco. After class Kacie went to meet the lady. Kacie calls to say the lady is super sweet. And her barn is nicer than the apartment Kacie lives in.

The gray filly is transported this morning to her new home with the super sweet beautiful barn lady.

The man at the breeding farm phones to say they have another older mare. I have until December 5th.

At that about sums up yesterday. A package of three sweatshirts from Mervyns was left at our front gate. A note saying give these sweatshirts to kids for Christmas. To the person who left this package, thank you very much.

Tbfriends has access to more than 90 thoroughbreds who need new places to live. These horses come from ranch foreclosures, ranch reductions, and private homes. The horses are free, and our screening process is easy. We provide transportation. These horses range in age from 2-25. My number is 530-383-2120.

We are socked in. Fog so thick my big nose in front of me cannot be seen. Hot turkey noodle soup for breakfast. The Beach Boys on the oldies station. 24 shopping days left until Christmas...

Hi All: Hope all is well. So much tragedy this weekend at Aqueduct. At least Springside looks like she is going to be okay, thank god. I tell you since Coby passed away I will not watch a race. The only races I watch are replays after I know that the horses came out of it okay. I think of Coby every day and miss him so much. I still can't believe he's gone. I look at that beautiful face and can't help but ask why? It's just so unfair. He was only a baby.

I have a horse racing on Thursday at Aqueduct by the name of Bellagio. If you get a chance say a prayer that he comes home safely. I'll watch after it's over. My Smart Justice is in training and doing well. I guess I'll have to get my courage up when he starts running next year.

I did have a bit of good news my mare Distant Belles who is in foal to Tapit is doing quite well. She is very happy and content and due to give birth next month. Please keep her in your thoughts and pray for a safe delivery and healthy baby.

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, that HSUS magazine's cover story is a great one. After reading it early this AM, I gave my copy to my coworker Jenn in RI today. She loves four-legged creatures at least as much as I do.

Will TB Friends be added to the holiday card list that is being created to show the addresses of equine shelters? I loved the way that Jonna lauded Joe & Cathy Shelton today. I think that Joe is right up there with Gandhi, personally speaking.

May each and everyone have "ACN"! Peace, RMH

#### To Lynne B: If you speak to Nancy of the Naughty Nutmeggers, can you please let her know how much she is missed here?
To Jane, I hope that Darcy has a good response to the fluids. I am keeping you both in my thoughts as she undergoes her treatment at the vet's hospital.
To Lorraine, I can understand why you wouldn't want to see racing live anymore, following Coby's untimely passing. May your horse Bellagio's race be a safe one this week. Please keep us informed about the course of Distant Belles' pregnancy, OK?
Thank you, Angel Dee, for being you!
To Sandra and Margie: Please let us know how Chief and Lucky are doing this week. ####

####Lyneeeee and Sandra - I've been workin' lots the past few days. Will it never end???? Sunday evening was rough. Lucky had a very poor night. I slept, somewhat, on the floor with him. I listened to every breath. I was prepared for the trip to the vet's, but Monday morning he was better, but I see now he is weaker. I think he took a step down that night. I remain vigilant. Thank you for asking.

Our furry little heroes. May God Bless them all.

Margie NM. You and Lucky are in my thoughts and prayers, so very hard with these furbabies, our family for sure........I hope he feels better in the coming days.

I love all of you, too.

Let's all thank God tonight for Alex. I don't know how he copes with the goings on in the place in his above post.

Posted by: MargieinNM at December 3, 2008 2:41 AM

Margie,
I second that, Alex is a great man!

Posted by: Renee Antaya at December 3, 2008 2:43 AM

Cents per pound, God help them. Our horses are worth so very much more, no price needs to go on their heads. Working with them as much as I do, now this riles me to no end. I wish I could go
and explode all over them. The tears are coming just thinking.

FOB's WE WILL end this for them!

Posted by: Renee Antaya at December 3, 2008 2:48 AM

Barbaro's Candles are looking great! Thanks, everybody!

Love you, Alex.
Love you, Barbaro.
Love you, FOB's.

Jayne - so sorry for your loss.

Heard the update from Dr. Richardson on Sirius radio today, glad Springside is recovering.

Three horses hurt, 2 dead at Aqueduct last week, I will return to my boycott of not watching that track.

Nick Zito's latest quote "This horse slaughter is insane, it is the most disgusted thing I have heard of." Missing you brave Wanderin Boy and Cobra Strike.

Renee - yes we will end the slaughter of our equine friends.
