Barbaro Updates: 739

updates are now here.

Update 4278: Prominent thoroughbred owner and breeder, and anti-slaughter advocate, Madeleine Pickens has stepped up to help save the wild horses that were under threat, due in some part to possible mismanagement: Horse Breeder-Owner Plans to Save Horses.

Update 4277: Thoroughbred Charities of America will conduct it's 19th Annual Stallion Season and Art Auction Friday, Dec. 5 at the Keeneland Entertainment Center in Lexington: Seasons, Art Auction to Benefit TCA
.

Update 4276: Minus 8, those were the first sounds I heard frmo my radio when I turned the ignition in my truck this morning! But it did not feel too bad, really! Bright sunshine, when the sun came up. And we only had five sets which was nice. We also started a little later as we had a lighter morning. I had two go to the gate for some schooling, and they went nicely. All galloped nicely, so despite the weather conditions work was short and enjoyable! Really!

Update 4275: An excellent perspective on why it makes sense, from a marketing standpoint, to seek out more humane alternatives for our stars after they are finished racing: TURNING CHALLENGE INTO OPPORTUNITY, excerpt:

Foremost among those is the question of what becomes of a Thoroughbred when it is no longer useful as a racing or breeding animal. Some owners and breeders take great measures to insure either a productive second life for their horses or dispose of them through humane euthanasia. Too many horses slip through the cracks, however, and end up on meat wagons headed to slaughter houses in Canada or Mexico, or are simply abandoned.

The perception of our sport is shaped by media reports of the cruelty of slaughter or abandonment of Thoroughbreds, and it does not present an image attractive to many Americans, especially a younger generation that is more in tune with animal welfare issues.

And excellent news from Mountaineer Park which has added a CANTER chapter: CANTER Opens New Chapter at Mountaineer, excerpt:

"We are pleased to offer this free program to our owners and trainers who are looking to place their race horses in new careers," said Rose Mary Williams, director of racing at Mountaineer. "CANTER has a proven track record helping trainers to sell and place their ex-race horses."

Hiya, FsOB! Who knows, if Wendy or Alex can zap the two posts timed at 11:16 & 11:26 on 11/19, I might be first in the "post position" this AM. Spammers seem to lack the intellect to know that the FsOB would not be interested in anything salacious involving any animal, even a hamster. A safe & productive day to each of you & a big "hurrah" to Madeleine Pickens.

Tycoon’s Wife to Buy Land as a Refuge for Wild Horses
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
DALLAS (AP) — The wife of the Texas oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens said Tuesday that she would create a refuge for wild horses, after the federal agency that manages them said it might have to kill some to control the herds and protect the Western range.

About 33,000 wild horses and burros roam the open range in 10 Western states. The federal Bureau of Land Management wants that population to be around 27,000 to protect the herd, the range and other foraging animals.

Horses that are too old or not adoptable by the public are sent to long-term holding facilities. The bureau now has about the same number of animals in holding facilities as on the range. The agency has said the costs of keeping horses in the holding facilities has caused officials to consider euthanasia as a last resort.

Mr. Pickens’s wife, Madeleine, said that she had proposed buying about one million acres to be a refuge for the horses now in holding facilities and that the bureau had agreed to give her the horses once she had the land.

Tom Gorey, a spokesman for the agency, said it welcomed the offer.

Ms. Pickens said that horses taken to the refuge would be sterilized and that horses taken out of the wild each year would be welcome as well. “We will never turn an animal down,” she said.

Ms. Pickens said she was negotiating the purchase of the land but would not say where it was. She is also creating a foundation to help with the project.

Ms. Pickens, the child of a British father and a Lebanese mother who grew up in the Middle East and went to school in England and France, said she always had a love for the West and wild horses.

“It’s such a beautiful sight to see,” Ms. Pickens said. “This is our national heritage, and it needs to be preserved.”

WEDNESDAY JOE: YET ANOTHER HORSE FARM CLOSING DOWN.
LORD...
***************************************************
Wednesday, November 19... Tbfriends has been asked to help yet another thoroughbred ranch out of business. There are more than 50 horses, including mares and youngsters of racing age. This ranch wants all of their horses gone by the end of 2008. Horses who do not find new homes will be sold to slaughter in Canada. How cold is that, pun intended.

A lady phoned yesterday and said come get her 6 thoroughbreds, or she will take them to auction in Turlock. Her horses have seldom been touched, and you need to wear catchers gear when loading them into a trailer. Just what every auction needs... more wild untouched horses for killers to choose from.

A family phoned yesterday and said please come get their two thoroughbreds. There is no money to feed them.

A teenage girl phoned yesterday and she can no longer keep her thoroughbred gelding. Her gelding has severe arthritis and needs a home where he will not be ridden.

A teenage girl phoned yesterday and she can no longer keep her thoroughbred gelding. There is no money for feed, and her mom wants the horse gone right now.

A boarding stable phoned on Monday and said come get these two thoroughbred mares, or both will be euthanized. The boarding stable took custody of the mares when their owner fell behind 3 months on board.

more to come

JOE PART TWO FOR WEDNESDAY
****************************************************

Tbfriends now has access to more than 100 horses who need new homes. All are thoroughbreds, and all are free. You must pay for transportation. These horses range in age from 2-25. Some are not yet broke to ride, but I can send you to the right people who will gladly help with this. My cell is 530-383-2120. Our screening process is a piece of cake. You must have proof of income, and I want to have a look at your other animals. If you are 17 or younger (good try Jamie) your parents have to be involved.

Still dark, strong coffee is from Peets, Chicago on the oldies station.

I was able to load two pictures below. Pay no attention to the dates, as this camera is complicated. You might as well ask me to fly a jet.

Below Top Left: We rescued this black stallion, and there have been hundreds of conversations as to his breed. The black stallion is small, which the photo below does not show well. I say part thoroughbred, part quarter. Others say full quarter. Some say part paso, part whatever. Well okay then. We have named him Pickles, and tomorrow morning our vet Lisa Wallace comes to remove his testicles. Pickles is sweet, but he has not been handled much.

Below Bottom Left: Yesterday we greeted this two year old gray filly, and how weird is this? Her registered name is Summer In Winter. Which is exactly what is happening now. We are having summer in winter. Her sire is Siberian Summer. This filly was too slow for the race track.

We also said hello to a bay two year old filly who has yet to be named. She is a 2006 and her dam is Merciless. So we are calling her Mercy.

Up our driveway came yet another pee and muddy dry caked gelding from the feed lot in Wilton. He is only 3, and we are calling him Jenkins. A sweetheart, and Jenkins dove into his tub of sweet feed like I dive into a tub of double chocolate chip. He spit out his peppermint though.

922 horses on our ranch. Okay, it only looks like 922. Passing motorist stare and point. Must be some crazy old people who live there. Probably 350 cats in their bedroom...

I thought wow, an e-mail from an actual male person. His name is Tyler and he is 16. I am thinking Tyler wants to discuss horse stuff. But he only wants the phone number of a girl I showed on my website. Instead of Tbfriends, we should be Tbface. Or Tbspace. I have all of these great ideas, but no one ever listens. Tyler lives in Orem, Utah. His family owns two geldings, both former race horses. Tyler ends his e-mail with: Peace old dude.

And now this old dude needs to say hello to a brand new day, and bring breakfast to 922 horses. Porky Pig waits for her good morning apple. Pony Boy waits for his good morning peppermint. We all need a routine. Helps with the unexpected.

Joe

Robyn and Tamme, thanks for asking about Chief. He is doing fair. He gets short winded and starts wheezing if he tries to do much. His vet is amazed he is still with us. He is on 2 enacard a day and 3 lasix. We tried to go from 4 to 2 lasix but that didnt work so he is on 3 lasix a day now. He eats good and gets lots of nilla wafers. He still carries his brick around. Since he is on so much lasix I am kept busy letting him outside and keeping his water bucket filled up. We went from a bowl to a bucket. He continues to lose weight. Whatever it takes.

Anti Slaughter Issues: US - ActNow / tell AQHA to oppose slaughter

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=30723.1

Here's a quick easy way to email AQHA to express your disgust at their postion re horse slaughter.

sharing email action alert from National Horse Protection League

Are you ready to send a message to AQHA?

For the past two weeks, we have been preparing to take action against the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) for its support of horse slaughter. First, we asked you to suggest a short phrase that would be appropriate as a subject line for protest emails to AQHA. We then asked you to vote for your favorite phrase from among the five finalists.

Thanks to the participation of our great National Horse Protection League (NHPL) community, we received tons of great submissions and we can now declare one the winner! This is the message AQHA leaders will see thousands of times in their inboxes:

Quarter Horses, Not Quarter Pounders

We believe this phrase, submitted by Kim K. from Sealy, TX, perfectly encapsulates the message and spirit of this campaign. For too long, AQHA has encouraged the over-breeding of horses, which has, in turn, contributed to the market for horse slaughter. Worse, the organization has lobbied against legislation that would ban slaughter and the export of horses for human consumption.

AQHA leadership needs to search its soul to determine whether it sees horses as noble living creatures deserving of love and respect or simply as profit generators that can be sold for human consumption once they serve no profitable purpose.

Please take one minute to visit the NHPL Web site and send an email to AQHA expressing your disgust with their position on slaughter. . . . [you can] use the following url to get started: [close up space] [note - hotlink available at the DB post noted above.]

http: // org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5270/t/1875/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=784

Once you have sent your email, please forward this alert widely to friends and family or use our "Tell-A-Friend" option that will pop up automatically after you send your email.

Thank you so much for participating in this effort.

Sincerely,
Team NHPL

The National Horse Protection League is an online community dedicated to making every horse a wanted horse. Our mission is simple: to protect horses and help owners who can no longer care for their animals find a humane and loving alternative to cruel death or abandonment. Hi Gang. Some good, good news here today. Thanks, Alex.

####Sandra, Lucky is taking Enalapril and Furosimide. He's OK. But getting weaker. He still gets worked up in the mornings when I dance like a fool. I'm thankful for each day we have.

I don't know how to say thank you to Mrs. Pickens. You can check http://push.pickensplan.com and see if you can find Boone's contact info. It's a group for energy issues, but maybe you can find something. Also, you can vote for Boone as Time Magazine's 2008 Person of the Year if you want.

Nov. 19 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

It is lovely to think of you when leaves and grasses are all shades of chrysanthemums and sunshine is golden though the autumn haze.

It is soothing to remember you when all is quiet at the midnight hour, when it is velvet or bathed in silver.

It is comforting to know your faith overcomes your fears, that peace permeates your whole existence.. You are aware that nothing equals the peace that passes all understanding.

It is with gratitude I know you are wise beyond human comprehension--and kind, even when there is reason not to be. You are the Great Spirit, the endless, loving Presence that blesses us in every hour.

Hiya, FsOB! Great news about Madeleine Pickens' generousity. I'm afraid that I don't have the e-mail address any longer of former Mayor Paul Bacon of Kaufman, TX. I lost my contacts list when we changed e-mail service a little while back. If Lucille Matte is reading today, perhaps she might ask Mayor Bacon if there is a way to send notes of thanks to Mrs. Pickens? Or perhaps someone from Americans Against Horse Slaughter might have a mailing address or liaison's address?

To Alex & Wendy, thanks for removing the trash this morning. There is more posted at 10:59 PM on 11/19 and at 12:48 AM on 11/20, unfortunately.

Wishing all here "ACN". Peace, RMH

#### To Margie in NM, so glad that you & Lucky have such a fun ritual each morning. Kita is really "up" in the mornings now before I leave for work, due to the recent cold snap up here in CT. To Sandra: Please know that I keep you and Chief close in my heart. Dear Chief and that brick! That boy of yours is an American Original, Sandra.
To Gia, my heartfelt sympathies to the Juliano Family. Truly a tragic loss! ####
