Barbaro Updates: 736

updates are now here.

Update 4260: It seems the full sister of Melbourne Cup winner Viewed was a couple of days away from slaughter, and saved: The $600 mare and her $100,000 foal.

Found on Paulick Report.

Update 4259: Warm again! And I had long johns on. Hard enuogh for us when the weather keeps changing, much worse for the horses. Lets hope they don't get sick. We had a busy morning this morning with ten sets. Five went before the break and five went after the break. All mine went nicely, so while it was quite a long morning it was an easy morning to get through. Our other rider is leaving today, and flying home over the weekend. He has been with us nearly the whole meet and has been great to work with. I don't think he fell off once (unlike me who did!) Anyway, lets hope we get together again at some point in the future!

Update 4258: Trainer Larry Jones, who plans to retire within a year, will receive the Big Sport of Turfdom award: Trainer Jones to receive Big Sport of Turfdom award.

Jess Jackson, who currently owns 80% of Curlin, is trying to buy the remaining 20%: Jackson Makes Bid for Curlin Interest
.

Comments

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, thanks so much for the blue-link to the story about Larry Jones' receipt of the Big Sport of Turfdom Award. How he loved Eight Belles!

To anyone who may be able to do a quick copy and paste this morning, Lou Ann posted a poem by an unknown author late yesterday evening. Lou Ann said that the poem had originally been posted on TWR imminently following Bobbey's passing on 01/29/07. (It may've been posted by Steve Rei.) The poem may bring some comfort to all here whose beloved animals have passed recently.

And on a final note, TGIF! Gotta run now on this dark, rainy morning. Peace, RMH

TGIF everyone!!

Thanks Robyn - I did what you suggested and it brought tears to my eyes. Here it is:

ASCENSION
And if I go,
While you're still here . . . .
Know that I live on,
vibrating to a different measure
-- behind a thin veil you cannot see
through.
You will not see me,
So you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar
together again,
-- both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
... I will be there.

Blessings to all FOBs!

The FoBs and a bunch of horse rescue folk--including the Frog Pond Draft Farm, Bright Futures Farm and who-all else I cannot remember--did a last minutes rescue of 4 Belgians, an old TB and a pony
from the meatman last night.

It was amazing, as usual, to see the Angels pop out and join together--with such amounts of donations--(yole know I always say, ANY AMOUNT IS WELCOME, etc.) that we moved a small mountain in about 3 hours. The discussions again on the these horses began on 11/3.

It was like watching Syracuse University basketball so many times over so many teams: you can't sit down for the whole last two quarters, and you develop a terrific urge to fall over when they will win in the last seconds...makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

But they're all safe. Thank you God. Thank you Alex for staying with this site for another year.

ALSO: I KNOW that we MUST have ransomed/bailed out/saved MORE than 2600 horses. That number has remained static for a LONG time. Is there a numbers-loving FoB who keeps tab on these rescues totals?

Have a fine day, FoBs.

You never know when an oppportunity to talk about horse slaughter will arise..Yesterday, I stopped at my local 10 minute oil change place to get my oil changed..The people working there saw my bumper sticker (americans against horse slaughter)
and asked about it..I soon had a rapt group listening to the plight of America's horses, the auctions..the killer buyers..Alex's accounts of the cheap prices.. I think I made quite an impact..

On other news..one FOB is actually reading my book!! I hope to hear back from her this weekend with her thoughts..anyone else who who reads it, I want to hear from you, too..

Support your FOB writers..buy books for stocking stuffers..we are starving artists,lol...

Buy Lyn Gilberts, Cassidy's Rescue, a wonderful story, beautifully illustrated, for children and adults..

Buy Rendered, by Me..a murder thriller..with horse slaughter in the middle of it.. can be purchased online thru amazon.com;barnesandnoble.com or iuniverse.com...

and last and certainly best... buy Lyn Lifshin's

Lost in the Fog, and Nutley's Pond her two newest poetry books.. I have them both and they are wonderful..Her book on Barbaro should be out soon, too...

Also, don't forget Dawn in Omaha's beautiful jewelry, it's on the fundraiser section at the left hand side of the menu here...

Morning, ABR Famblee....

My *MURPHY* is in Hevvin one month today...and I have some BIG NEWS!!

Murph Man is the 'first-ever' featured *FURKID* in a new segment of Equine Heaven, called *KINDRED SPIRITS*...if you go to www.equine-heaven.com, you can SEE HIM:) and read a little of his life here on Earth...and for his Mama, the *BESTEST* is, that the Heavenly Farm Manager has given us a 'peek' into his New Life at Heaven's Gate Farm!!

Page down on the Homepage, and you can see my *BOY*:) in a picture taken last October 28th, on his *ELEVENTH BIRTHDAY*...with his 'fwoggy'...That picture of Murphy pretty much sums him up, Famblee...he is wearing his 'signature smile':) just bein' his *HAPPY BOY* self!

Gosh, I sure do miss that 'goggy', but I'm so pleased he is having the time of his new little life at Heaven's Gate Farm!

####Lou Ann, thank you for posting the poem last night. Still missing my Chessie but reading the poem really hit home. I cried tears but they are happy tears these days.

Many years ago, I was in the middle of moving (divorce) and left Chess with some friends for a couple of days thinking it would be safer until I got all the furniture moved. These friends lived about two miles away. Somehow, Chess got out and was nowhere to be found. I was devastated. For monthes we all looked, ran ads I even slept over at their house hoping to find him. Never happened. Time went by and I never gave up but began to gradually realize I wouldn't see my cat again. Months went by, then one night I was taking out the trash and a blk/white cat jumped off my back porch. I noticed he looked like Chess but what were the odds? From two miles away and monthes later? I called him and he responded...it was him. I was on cloud nine. He was a bit banged up but otherwise okay. So...we had several more good yrs together. The reason I tell this story is in the last few days of Chessie's life...at the end...I often whispered to him "you find me again or this time I will find you."

I truly believe those we love just go ahead of us...that they are close by "vibrating to a different measure
-- behind a thin veil you cannot see
through"

Robyn, thanks for asking for that to be reposted. I hope it helps others, so many, who have recently experienced lost.

JOE on FRIDAY
******************************************************
Friday, November 14th... Winds from the north have been pounding us hard all night, and I am late with chores. One of our neighbors must have gone to Carls Jrs, because their trash just landed next to Pony Boy. Fires once again all over California, and this is November. An upside down universe. Horse killer Manny Phelps is hardly a deep thinker. But on the phone he tells me Americans have destroyed our planet. His exact words: You people suck.

Feeding in our south field, and winds carry expensive alfalfa to cows a block away. Cows are writing their Thank You cards.

One of our neighbors must have gone to Papa Murphys Pizza, because their empty box just smacked the side of our house.

A black stallion rescued last month, and we are not sure of his breed. To me he is beautiful. To a recent visitor he is ho hum. Crazy winds have the black stallion upset. So far he is manageable.

I like what Mallory has to say in her e-mail. Mallory is 17, and she writes: My boyfriend was mad because I spend too much time with my horse. He gave me a choice. Either my horse or him. My horse is a much better kisser. My boyfriend is long gone.

One of our neighbors must read The San Francisco Chronicle. The front page from election day is clinging to our north fence.

A recent arrival from a race track in Los Angeles, and he has sore feet. Through noisy winds we can hear him screaming. You can easily tell, when he returns to earth from his race track high, this gelding will be a puppy dog.

I like what Katie has to say in her e-mail. Katie is 15, and she writes: No reason Joe for you to believe me. But in the snow he made a big heart with his urine. You can ask my mom. I made her come outside to see. My horse was showing how much he loves me.

One of our neighbors must subscribe to Netflix. Their empty red envelope just landed in our yard.

Tbfriends has access to more than 60 horses, mostly thoroughbreds. These horses come from ranch foreclosures and private homes. Each horse is free, and I do the screening. I also arrange transportation, and that is a must. The horses range in age from 4-25. If you can provide a good home to one of these horses, give me a call at 530-383-2120.

Delicious hot coffee is from Dunkin Doughnuts. Microwave waffles are made by Eggo. The Beatles on the oldies station. Tiny balls of horse poop pushed up against the side of our house. Better Homes & Gardens have cancelled their photo shoot.

I like what Sam has to say in her e-mail. Sam is 16, and she writes: I cry myself to sleep. I am so very blessed to have him in my life. Yesterday my mom had to drive me back to the barn. We just came from there, and I made her take me back. I had to hug him one more time. He saved my life.

Enjoy your windy warm Friday, and be sure to hug your horses.

It has been one week.....and I am still here. Last Friday I wasn't sure how I could make it through - it felt as if I had no heart - no breath. Sherman helps me - I know it is him.

I went to Pam's and collected the rest of our things today. I walked the pasture. She had another gelding come in - a black horse. She said she would teach me to ride on that horse - and I told her I would - in honor of Sherman - I would ride again.......

I miss him - he really was such a huge part of my world - just feels so empty right now.

Nov 14 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Having a career agenda is nothing without a spiritual agenda to back it up. Good plans and good intentions are a part of getting ahead, but it's not so different from whipping up a cake and finding there's no oven to bake it in.

We are not one dimension, or two---we are three dimensional body, mind, and spirit. Only a very foolish person believes you can develop one part and ignore the others. Balance is important--perfect balance. It is the only way we do anything, because without it we fall flat on our faces. So why plan on the sky being the limit when there's no idea what the Spirit is. Cool and suave it isn't, solid as gold it is.

When we look into the history of our race, we see some green spots that are pleasing to us. We also find many things to make the heart sad.

Dearest Mary,

This is so fitting

Dear Cheryl,

As you may know, horse advocate and National Horse Protection League founder John A. Hettinger recently passed away. John spent his life fighting tirelessly for the protection of horses. Asked in one interview why he was so devoted to the cause, he said: "All of my best friends have four legs."

John was a member of the Board of Trustees for the New York Racing Association, chairman emeritus of the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation, a longtime owner of Fasig-Tipton, the nation's oldest thoroughbred auction house, and the founder of Blue Horse Charities, which raises money for Thoroughbred adoption and rescue programs.

For those who are carrying on his legacy, we are proud to announce the creation of the John A. Hettinger Horse Hero Award, which is designed to honor individuals from all walks of life who have gone above and beyond to protect our equine friends. Each month, we will choose a Horse Hero based on your submissions. At the end of the year, one of the twelve monthly winners will be chosen as the John A. Hettinger Horse Hero of the Year.

After we announced that we were seeking submissions for the first honoree, we were delighted to receive so many amazing stories of sacrifice and heroism on behalf of horses. We had a very large pool of applicants, all of whom deserve the title of Horse Hero, so the decision was extremely difficult. But in the end, we had to choose one.

We are pleased to announce that the first-ever recipient of the John A. Hettinger Horse Hero of the Month award is:

***JERRY FINCH***

Jerry's dedication has placed thousands of horses in good homes. He is president of Habitat for Horses, which recently saved 40 horses from Galveston Island in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.

Good Morning Famblee,
Today is, for me, a somber day. I have nothing inspiring or witty to say. I tried to think of something, but when I saw what today is, I couldn't. You see, 18 years ago today a murder was committed. The act was committed 18 years ago last night, but today is the anniversary of the day the great Alydar died. We know the story so I won't go into it here. Say a prayer please in rememberance of Alydar. A life stolen from all, not just Alydar.
NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!
