    Barbaro Updates: 731

    updates are now here.

Update 4243: Another chillier morning this morning at Woodbine. And another busy morning at Steve's I had ten sets, five before the break and five after the break. No gate schoolers but a few galloped two miles so quite a tiring morning's work! All galloped nicely. My morning started again with a spin around the sand ring on one of Anita's (Terry Jordan). We have a few runners here this afternoon, and one we recently shipped out, Jimmy Simms, is running at Churchill Downs. Hopefully a fun afternoon at the races!

Update 4242: For the second time since I have been at this Woodbine meet, Churchill Downs has had to cut purses. This latest cut takes effect on Wednesday: Churchill cuts purses by 10 percent.

    Found on Paulick Report.

Update 4241: A pleasant afternoon at the races at Woodbine. We had two runners and both won, and we paddock schooled three. It was nice to get the winners. We had had a little bit of a leaner time with winners in the last couple of weeks. I also got to watch Taletobetold win at Churchill Downs. She was my favorite horse that I used to ride for Eddie Kenneally. Very cool!

Update 4240: We had rain overnight, but thankfully not during training hours at Woodbine. It was also a little chillier here than it has been the last few days, but still warm enough for the time of year! A busy morning at Steve's. I had ten sets, we got six out before the break and then four out after the break, non of which went to the gate. All galloped nicely. One (Mr Rowdy) bucked so high and hard after his gallop that I lost my neckstrap halfway through the move. If I had hung onto the neckstrap I am sure he would have pulled me over his head. As one rider remarked, it was a good job I was riding very long, as is my habit on Rowdy! The day started with a visit to the sand ring on one of Anita's (Terry Jordan). I was tired and ready for a coffee when I was done!

Update 4239: Raven's Pass, surprise winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic, has been retired to stud in Ireland: Raven's Pass retired; to stand at Kildangan Stud.

Stardom Bound, the best 2yo filly this year, will campaign on the west coast again next year, and jockey Mike Smith will retain the mount: Stardom Bound to race in California in '09.

My tears join yours. I cannot say anything to ease your pain, but I am here mourning with you and the rest of the Famblee. I also join everyone in rejoicing for your love and devotion to Sherman and the love he received from you.

    Lorraine,
Your devestation is unfathomable; your pain bottomless. Beautiful Coby was given to you for a reason. Just like Barbaro, Coby's life has a purpose. I believe one part of that purpose is to help us rededicate and increase our efforts here in his memory. My heart breaks along with yours Fren.

Godspeed Coby and Sherman. Forever Champions, Forever in our hearts.

    My love to you both.

Whole and well now. It's the only way I can think of their deaths. Tee is busy in Heaven caring for the new arrivals.

Safe rides to all who put feet on race tracks today. Wishing better luck, better news, a safer world for all of us this weekend and in the coming week.

    ####Mary S and Lorraine..

I am just now learning of Sherman and Coby and my heart is breaking. Please know all of us love you and share your sorrow.

Frens, if you can spare one more prayer, say one for my own Jackson Browne. I dreamed night before last he was injured, then when I went to the barn yesterday morning, he was indeed limping so badly he could barely walk. I kept him up all day yesterday, the farrier came last night and said he thinks he may be trying to pop an abscess. So here we go again, with another horse and a bad foot..I can scarely breathe it scares me so.

    Harriette, dear fren:

We are with you. sending out prayer for Jackson Browne and for you, that you be able to be calm for him and god willing, your Vet is great and the farrier a person with magical healing knowledge.

This time of year--it just seems to harbor bad damned news or challenges for so many people.

I send hugs and many good thoughts and loads of crazy greyhound white light.

    From Harriette's daily email:

    Subject: Nov 8 Cherokee Devotional

Listen, if you do not care about yourself, who is going to? If you are not acquainted with your own spirit, who will be?

Listen, there are secrets in your heart that you have refused to hear. There is strength in your mind and in your soul that you have not used.

Who told you that you would never amount to anything ? Did you say it, or did you hear it said ? It is a lie. You see, Spirit is the only One that knows you. Has He said you won't make it? Never, because He knows you can. If you will only believe in yourself, if you will only take the initiative and move one step. He will move two. All you have to do is care about yourself and your Creator.

I have nothing bad in my breast at all;everything is all right there.

    SATURDAY @ JOES
    *************************************************
    Saturday, November 8th...

When this day is over it will be 2011. Chores go on forever. There are visits with families to approve for sight unseen horses. We will say goodbye to the filly Deep Violet, who has a new home with a family in Petaluma. We will say goodbye to the little gelding Munch, who has a new home with a family in Brentwood. The man on the radio is promising rain. A crockpot filled with beans and cheeses and tomatoes and spices. Make your own burritos as the day goes on. My record is six.

So this is not going to be much of a morning journal. (the crowd cheers in relief) Hot coffee with praline cream is from Starbucks. Microwave waffles are made by Eggo. Sheryl Crow on the radio. The sun is almost here, and 784 horses are waiting for breakfast. Okay, it only looks like 784. I think we are at 125. Or is it 145? Passing motorists tell each other there must be a crazy old fool who lives there.

Mary lives in Marysville. Just imagine, an entire town named after you. In October Mary accepted a sight unseen gelding into her life, and this past Wednesday she rode him for the first time. A riding instructor came to her house, just to be sure Mary was safe. I only mention all of this because Mary is 50 whatever years old. She writes to say on Wednesday she had the time of her life. Her gelding is a thoroughbred with a racing tattoo. Mary calls him a gentle giant. In her letter Mary tells me thank you. She loves her gentle giant like crazy.

Tbfriends has access to more than 110 horses. These horses come from ranch foreclosures and partial ranch reductions. They come from families who have lost their employment. They come from people who do not want to buy feed this winter. If you would like one of these free horses, it is best to phone. My cell is 530-383-2120. I do the screening. I also arrange transportation. Most of these horses are thoroughbreds, and they range in age from 3 to 24.

Time to feed 937 horses. Enjoy your there might be rain, there might be sun, for sure there will be darkness by 5:30 Saturday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Oh my God, I just logged on after a few days away from the Board to concentrate on Inventory for work...

Mary S., I am so, so very sorry for your loss of Sherman. Oh my God...

    ______________________
Everyone, I have been pouring sooo much time and energy into this @#%&* inventory that I can hardly think straight. We are all exhausted at work and we feel that the inventory will not go well...and there will be consequences.

I had contacted Mary S. and had offered to either donate some money, which couldn't be much, or create a stained glass suncatcher to sell and donate the proceeds towards Sherman's care.

I asked her what Sherman's colors were...and she told me.

Due to this inventory, and the fear attached to it, I have been preoccupied but Sherman's gift never left my mind...

Mary, I owe you an apology. I am sooo sorry that I could not come through for you...in time.

I wanted Sherman's gift to be perfect. I have numerous sketches around the house and a few laying at work...but hidden.

I never intended to let you down Mary. I am sorry Mary...and Sherman. I am so sorry.

I am so embarrassed and angry that my work took priority. I hope you understand my need Mary.
    _______

Mary, your Sherman KNEW the depths of your love and efforts to heal him, comfort him and protect him from further pain. You are his Mommy...

He KNEW the countless hours of worry, research, communication, and travel that you gave to him, and his care.

Mary, you did EVERYthing and beyond to offer your boy a loving and full life.

Please know that we are here Mary. I may not have logged on much lately...but you and Sherman were ALWAYS in my thoughts and prayers...xxoo..x

    Lorraine,

I am very sorry to read of your loss of Coby.

I am reminded of your posts concerning his races and outcomes. Your pride IS so very apparent!

Yes Lorraine, I say "is" because Coby and his accomplishments will forever fill your heart with the hot-fudge yummy warmth that only those who unconditionally love us, and put that effortless instant smile on our face, can offer...and enrich us.

I am so sorry Lorraine. Please know that Coby will be in my prayers...xxoo...x

Just now reading about all the tragedies -
Lorraine, so sorry to hear about Coby, he was beautiful, I saw him race last year I think on Breeders Cup weekend and he ran his heart out in the slop. All the announcers on TVG picked him and were talking about what potential he had. Praying for you to find peace.

Mary, so tragic about Sherman, he is now painfree and with Barbaro.

Shocked to hear about Tee, the Rainbow Bridge poem someone posted about the poor rescued animals is so true for her, she saved many lives.

You are Famblee. We are all doing the best we can in these rough times. I am so very sure that Mary and everyone else understands. Where would we be without your tuck-ins.

Please eberyone, no beating up on ourselves. There is so much love here: it costs us nothing, and we have it in abundance. Life is so difficult. But one foot in front of the other, we'll get there.

There is so much to be done, and YES WE CAN: on lots of fronts.

    Sunday morning upstate ny:
40-ish, seasonal, rainy. Par for the later Fall weather. Good morning my FoBs!!

Hoping for a good day for all of us: safe rides to all who run today.

Mass, BTW, passed the proposition by 51% to shut down the two remaining dog tracks there by 2010. Good news/bad news.

Adoptions are down--along with everything else in this wretched depression we find ourselves entering--and that will make placing the nearly 1,000 greyhounds who are "surplus" at the end of the track closing in great jeopardy.

So on we march: hoping and praying that the new Obama team in DC can begin to establish some fiscal soundness sooner than later. So many critical issues on Barack's plate.

I just daily ask God to keep him and his family safe. We have done a wonderful thing in the US, now we have to get behind the Obama team and keep holding hands to move this country forward.

Off for more coffee. And to go to the next phase of dog food prep. I can't bring myself to toss out the last of Jessie's pumpkin. I just keep moving the container around the refrigerator...

Prayer and support and hugs for all who are going through loss of our beasties--big and small.

Thank, Alex, as usual, for all you do.

    Good Morning Famblee!
As we start a new week today, let us begin to move forward from last week's incredible heartbreak. As Jonna says, "Courage!" There is no better Famblee, no more loving a Famblee than the Famblee of FsOB!

I ask for your prayers for a special Horse. She's a beautiful Lady and she's well known to us. Butterfly Belle, who Russel Baze rode into the history books ran the 2nd race at Golden Gate last Thurday. Belle finished 3rd. A couple of races ago she won a $20k claiming race, this last race was a $10k claiming race. She is dropping with every race. Prayers please that she be safe and find a forever home.

Onward Famblee; our fights are not over yet (some may never end). Our unity, and the strength we have because of our unity, are our strongest asset. Setbacks and heartbreak will come, but we will stand strong and proud knowing that, because We Get It!, we did and do the right thing.

NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!

BLESS JOE AND HIS FAITHFUL VOLUNTEERS.
    ****************************************************
Sunday, November 9th... On Friday I wrote how 230 volunteers for Tbfriends will meet at a boarding stable next spring. We will spend a weekend building and painting and doing concrete work. All of this so two young girls who were about to lose their horses could have free board.

Your letters and phone calls continue to inspire us. This came from Emily, she is 15, and lives in San Diego: I can hammer a nail better than any boy. Just tell me what weekend and I will be there. My parents said they can party in San Francisco while I am working for Tbfriends. I would love to help those two girls.

(um, any chance I can go with your parents?)

There were more than 60 letters and phone calls, all saying they will be happy to work that weekend. Of course there is no way we can show up with 300 people. How many porta potties would that be?

Once again, we are inspired by you. This came from Shelby, and she is 17: I will be there that weekend to help. I want you to know how grateful I am. Thank you for giving me this chance to help those two girls.

This came from Nicole and she is only 10: I want to help the two girls who need free board. I can carry things, and I can bring bottled water to the big men who are sweaty.

    more to come

Mid America horse Rescue had its first fundraiser last night. It was a great success and we had a great turnout. We were able to to make aware to many people the plight of these racehorses once they leave the track. We had several pledges of help outside the horse community and hopefully it will help spread the word. People STILL dont know this is happening. It is a tough go right now with these fundraisers right now with the economy so bad. Things that should have brought more money, went pretty cheap.
This is the only thing I have to say in the negative. The area FOBS who are talking the talk, are not doing much else. NOne of them showed. I am pretty disappointed by that. Either put up or shut up. Dont pretend you want to help and then just sit on your hands. Rescues are closing because of the lack of donations. If we really want to make a difference, help your local rescue, they need help bad.

My heart is heavy with all the loss. We ask ourselves so often, "does it ever end?". Clearly, the answer is NO it doesn't and it validates something that I have known since the beginning of the ABR journey. This community is the most compassionate & supportive group on the face of our planet.

MaryS.....when grief takes hold, the depths we can go are unfathomable. When we love deeply we must go there so that we can come out the other end with many lessons learned and hopefully, maybe with room for another to enter the heart.
I feel for you Mary having been there myself so many times. You did everything you could. Find some peace in the knowledge that you didn't let Sherman down but in fact, gave him the happiest most loved time of his life.

Lorranie....I am so very sorry for your loss. Coby loved his job and found shear joy in the acting of running. You did not fail him by letting him do what he loved.

My heart goes out to Tee's family and frens. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love of all of our furkids who preceeded her and our horses lost.

Harriett...I pray for Jackson Browne. Your are both in my thoughts and prayers.

JOE CONTINUED: I might just have to fire up the private jet and get out there next Spring and help too (Yeah, OK: jest a leetle bit delusional today...)
    **************************************************
This came from Nicole and she is only 10: I want to help the two girls who need free board. I can carry things, and I can bring bottled water to the big men who are sweaty.

This is from Jordan, and she is a student at Sacramento State: The best gift we can give ourselves is to help others.

Also on Friday I wrote how Tbfriends and many supporters are providing food and clothes to kids who live at youth shelters in the Sacramento area.

This came from Jessica, and she is a student at UC Davis: Just tell me what you need. I love to grocery shop.

This is from Brea, and she lives in Pinole, California: My mom and me always argue about what I should wear. I have all of these clothes that I have only worn once. They are nice clothes. My mom and me will bring them to you for the kids at youth shelters.

This is from Alex, and she is 17: Please let me help Joe. Please, please, please.

This is from Allison, and she too is a student at Davis: I am staying in town all this holiday season. Anything you need, I will be there. Please allow me to help.

This is from our friend Kelly Bonds, no relation to Barry: I can drive and I can deliver. I have $80.00 to give you Joe so you can buy food and clothes. Or you can use my $80.00 to help a horse. This is so magical. God has been so good to me. I love Pirate with all my heart. Call me and I will be there.

Oh, and did I mention how your letters and phone calls continue to inspire us?

More horses come to us today from race tracks. Poop on top of poop. We could be a balmy 61 degrees. The Temptations on the oldies station...

    Joe

I have been trying to find words for those suffering such painful loss and can find none. So many kind and thoughtful words have been posted. I cannot add more. Please try to remember that whatever your human or animal endeavor, you did your best. Loss and the pain it brings is a process; not the finish line of this world.

This is not only a difficult time of year due to seasonal changes coupled with difficult economic circumstances; it is an opportunity to build on our resolve, committment and the regeneration of good and life that this world so desperately needs. All living things die. The difference we can make is how, when and with dignity and respect.

Jen...thanks for trying. Keep trying. There will be people that can help. They will be hard to find, but they are out there.

Don't go away; never go away until the fight is won....pass the torch and keep the fires burning. There are searchers and they will follow the flames of truth and justice and kindness and love and......

JOnna- Denise, thanks for the comments. I am so proud of what we accomplished so far, it is so tough, the only thing is, is that Margo the president of MAHr has a no fail attitude. I feel proud of what we did yet dissapointed in the ones who didnt show. Does that make sense? Maybe my expectations of people are too much. Jen

More on the grey mare and paint gelding:

"This pair's total needed is now down to $393 needed TONIGHT.

"They are in the direct-to-slaughter pen.

"AC4H will get them safe, give them TLC that they need and deserve, and find them good homes.

"Donations are tax deductible and go to: www.ac4h.com then click on donation/payment options"

    thank you.

Good evening, FsOB. What a sad weekend this has been.... How tragic to read of Sherman's and Crobra Strike's passing. And then to read Alex's note about what happened as he was riding Mr. Rowdy, my heart was in my throat. I hope that Harriette's Jackson Browne has a more comfortable week.

    #### To Denise, thank you for reposting Martita's tribute to George Washington on Friday morning.
To Joan Roya: What a thoughtful and generous thing you did for Richard's hungry family. I am keeping him in my thoughts this evening and hoping that he has a full recovery.
To Janice: Your reading about Richard in Houston's medical emergency must have brought back a flood of memories about Denny's ruptured aneurysm. What a true friend you & Denny had in Kaiser!
To Lynne B.: Thank you for contacting Nancy. She absolutely adored Lorraine's Coby!
To Tamme: I am glad that your computer is functional once more and hope that Nancy's will be working again soon, too. ####

    ...looking at the night sky...
    ...snow is coming.

It was on a night very much like this that hearts began to prepare for the breaking. Many of us felt it. Even through the hope...in his pain...in the words and actions of Dr R, and in the Jackson's frantic resolved search for relief for our champion, many of us somehow knew that the cold, grey skies were bringing something colder than snow.

Missing you a lot tonight. Clutching my collar to close out the cold. Can't linger long, looking at the night sky. Even so, it is still quite beautiful.

Always Loving you, beautiful, valiant BARBARO.

    Your FOB Fren, O

My sister had a stroke and I need your prayers, not for her to recover but for God to take her home, I know she will be with God and she is ready. We have taken her off the feeding tubes and we are just waiting, and it is killing me. So if you would just ask God to take her and stop her suffering. This is her wishes, and our family hurting so much. Her name is Dot and she is the most wonderful person you would ever meet!
